We calculate exactly the first cumulants of the integrated current and of the activity (which is the total number of changes of configurations) of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on a ring with periodic boundary conditions. Our results indicate that for large system sizes the large deviation functions of the current and of the activity take a universal scaling form, with the same scaling function for both quantities. This scaling function can be understood either by an analysis of Bethe ansatz equations or in terms of a theory based on fluctuating hydrodynamics or on the macroscopic fluctuation theory of Bertini, De Sole, Gabrielli, Jona-Lasinio and Landim.
We study a minimal model of active transport in crowded single-file environments which generalises the emblematic model of single file diffusion to the case when the tracer particle (TP) performs either an autonomous directed motion or is biased by an external force, while all other particles of the environment (bath) perform unbiased diffusions. We derive explicit expressions, valid in the limit of high density of bath particles, of the full distribution $P_n(X)$ of the TP position and of all its cumulants, for arbitrary values of the bias $f$ and for any time $n$. Our analysis reveals striki…
Using a generalisation of the detailed balance for systems maintained out of equilibrium by contact with 2 reservoirs at unequal temperatures or at unequal densities, we recover the fluctuation theorem for the large deviation funtion of the current. For large diffusive systems, we show how the large deviation funtion of the current can be computed using a simple additivity principle. The validity of this additivity principle and the occurence of phase transitions are discussed in the framework of the macroscopic fluctuation theory.
We formulate a simple additivity principle allowing to calculate the whole distribution of current fluctuations through a large one dimensional system in contact with two reservoirs at unequal densities from the knowledge of its first two cumulants. This distribution (which in general is non-Gaussian) satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry and generalizes the one predicted recently for the symmetric simple exclusion process. The additivity principle can be used to study more complex diffusive networks including loops.
We apply tensor networks to counting statistics for the stochastic particle transport in an out-of-equilibrium diffusive system. This system is composed of a one-dimensional channel in contact with two particle reservoirs at the ends. Two tensor-network algorithms, namely, Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and Time Evolving Block Decimation (TEBD), are respectively implemented. The cumulant generating function for the current is numerically calculated and then compared with the analytical solution. Excellent agreement is found, manifesting the validity of these approaches in such an …
We study fluctuation properties of a one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model out of equilibrium, focusing in particular on the gapped regime. Within the open-system setting we study large-deviation properties of the spin current. Numerically evaluating the first four current cumulants in a nonequilibrium stationary state at high energies, we find that the first two cumulants scale with the system size in a diffusive way, while the 3rd and the 4th cumulants do not. This means that the model is not an ordinary diffusive spin conductor.
The consequences of microreversibility for the linear and nonlinear transport properties of systems subjected to external magnetic fields are systematically investigated in Aharonov-Bohm rings connected to two, three, and four terminals. Within the independent electron approximation, the cumulant generating function, which fully specifies the statistics of the nonequilibrium currents, is expressed in terms of the scattering matrix of these circuits. The time-reversal symmetry relations up to the third responses of the currents and the fourth cumulants are analytically investigated and numerica…
We consider diffusive lattice gases on a ring and analyze the stability of their density profiles conditionally to a current deviation. Depending on the current, one observes a phase transition between a regime where the density remains constant and another regime where the density becomes time dependent. Numerical data confirm this phase transition. This time dependent profile persists in the large drift limit and allows one to understand on physical grounds the results obtained earlier for the totally asymmetric exclusion process on a ring.

We have considered a new type of 'XY' model where spins are placed on concentric ring with constant spin density in every ring. The spin executes continuous rotation under a modified Shore-Zwanzig Hamiltonian (J. Chem. Phys. 63, 5445 (1975)). We have performed Monte Carlo simulation using Glauber acceptance criteria. Computations of Binder's cumulant, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility all show presence of a finite temperature order-disorder phase transition in this spin system. The system size dependence of Binder's cumulant suggests the existence of a phase transition with a transitio…
We consider the steady state of a one dimensional diffusive system, such as the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on a ring, driven by a battery at the origin or by a smoothly varying field along the ring. The battery appears as the limiting case of a smoothly varying field, when the field becomes a delta function at the origin. We find that in the scaling limit, the long range pair correlation functions of the system driven by a battery turn out to be very different from the ones known in the steady state of the SSEP maintained out of equilibrium by contact with two reservoirs, even w…
The cumulant generating function of time-averaged current is studied from an operational viewpoint. Specifically, for interacting Brownian particles under non-equilibrium conditions, we show that the first derivative of the cumulant generating function is equal to the expectation value of the current in a modified system with an extra force added, where the modified system is characterized by a variational principle. The formula reminds us of Einstein's fluctuation theory in equilibrium statistical mechanics. Furthermore, since the formula leads to the fluctuation-dissipation relation when the…
Using the large-deviation formalism, we study the statistics of current fluctuations in a diffusive nonequilibrium quantum spin chain. The boundary-driven XX chain with dephasing consists of a coherent bulk hopping and a local dissipative dephasing. We analytically calculate the exact expression for the second current moment in a system of any length and then numerically demonstrate that in the thermodynamic limit higher-order cumulants and the large-deviation function can be calculated using the additivity principle or macroscopic hydrodynamic theory. This shows that the additivity principle …
We study one-dimensional exclusion processes in two coupled closed rings consisting of a common diffusive channel and two parallel active (driven) channels. Our model displays bulk-driven phase transition and phase coexistence in the form of a localised domain wall (DW) in one of the active channels in a limit where the diffusive and driven dynamics compete. By controlling a splitting parameter which tunes the in-coming currents into the active channels, the system can be brought to a delocalisation transition, when delocalised DWs are formed in both the active channels. We characterise the DW…

We study a gas of hard rods on a ring, driven by an external thermostat, with either elastic or inelastic collisions, which exhibits sub-diffusive behavior $<x^2 > \sim t^{1/2}$. We show the validity of the usual Fluctuation-Dissipation (FD) relation, i.e. the proportionality between the response function and the correlation function, when the gas is elastic or diluted. On the contrary, in strongly inelastic or dense cases, when the tracer velocity is no more independent of the other degrees of freedom, the Einstein formula fails and must be replaced by a more general FD relation.
The relaxation process of a diffusive ring becomes under-damped if the bias (so called affinity) exceeds a critical threshold value, aka delocalization transition. This is related to the spectral properties of the pertinent stochastic kernel. We find the dependence of the relaxation rate on the affinity and on the length of the ring. Additionally we study the implications of introducing a weak-link into the circuit, and illuminate some subtleties that arise while taking the continuum limit of the discrete model.
Using high precision Monte Carlo simulations and a mean-field theory, we explore coarsening phenomena in a simple driven diffusive system. The model is reminiscent of vehicular traffic on a two-lane ring road. At sufficiently high density, the system develops jams (clusters) which coarsen with time. A key parameter is the passing probability, $γ$. For small values of $γ$, the growing clusters display dynamic scaling, with a growth exponent of 2/3. For larger values of $γ$, the growth exponent must be adjusted, suggesting the ordered (jammed) state is not a genuine phase but rather a finite siz…
We study the large deviations of current-type observables defined for Markov diffusion processes evolving in smooth bounded regions of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with reflections at the boundaries. We derive for these the correct boundary conditions that must be imposed on the spectral problem associated with the scaled cumulant generating function, which gives, by Legendre transform, the rate function characterizing the likelihood of current fluctuations. Two methods for obtaining the boundary conditions are presented, based on the diffusive limit of random walks and on the Feynman--Kac equation underlyi…
A model relevant for the study of certain molecular magnets is the ring of N=4 classical spins with equal near-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions. Assuming classical Heisenberg spin dynamics, we solve explicitly for the time evolution of each of the spins. Exact triple integral representations are derived for the auto, near-neighbor, and next-nearest-neighbor time correlation functions for any temperature. At infinite temperature, the correlation functions are reduced to quadrature. We then evaluate the Fourier transforms of these functions in closed form, which are double int…
For the 2D matrix Langevin dynamics that corresponds to the continuous-time limit of the product of some $2 \times 2$ random matrices, the finite-time Lyapunov exponent can be written as an additive functional of the associated Riccati process submitted to some Langevin dynamics on the infinite periodic ring. Its large deviations properties can be thus analyzed from two points of view that are equivalent in the end by consistency but give different perspectives. In the first approach, one starts from the large deviations at level 2.5 for the joint probability of the empirical density and of th…
We consider fluctuations of the time-averaged current in the one-dimensional weakly-asymmetric exclusion process on a ring. The optimal density profile which sustains a given fluctuation exhibits an instability for low enough currents, where it becomes time-dependent. This instability corresponds to a dynamical phase transition in the system fluctuation behavior: while typical current fluctuations result from the sum of weakly-correlated local events and are still associated with the flat, steady-state density profile, for currents below a critical threshold the system self-organizes into a ma…
