We study a gas of hard rods on a ring, driven by an external thermostat, with either elastic or inelastic collisions, which exhibits sub-diffusive behavior $<x^2 > \sim t^{1/2}$. We show the validity of the usual Fluctuation-Dissipation (FD) relation, i.e. the proportionality between the response function and the correlation function, when the gas is elastic or diluted. On the contrary, in strongly inelastic or dense cases, when the tracer velocity is no more independent of the other degrees of freedom, the Einstein formula fails and must be replaced by a more general FD relation.
We study a minimal model of active transport in crowded single-file environments which generalises the emblematic model of single file diffusion to the case when the tracer particle (TP) performs either an autonomous directed motion or is biased by an external force, while all other particles of the environment (bath) perform unbiased diffusions. We derive explicit expressions, valid in the limit of high density of bath particles, of the full distribution $P_n(X)$ of the TP position and of all its cumulants, for arbitrary values of the bias $f$ and for any time $n$. Our analysis reveals striki…
We consider a gas of point particles moving in a one-dimensional channel with a hard-core inter-particle interaction that prevents particle crossings --- this is called single-file motion. Starting from equilibrium initial conditions we observe the motion of a tagged particle. It is well known that if the individual particle dynamics is diffusive, then the tagged particle motion is sub-diffusive, while for ballistic particle dynamics, the tagged particle motion is diffusive. Here we compute exactly the large deviation function for the tagged particle displacement and show that this is universa…
We computationally study the effects of binding kinetics to the channel wall, leading to transient immobility, on the diffusive transport of particles within narrow channels, that exhibit single-file diffusion (SFD). We find that slow binding kinetics leads to an anomalously slow diffusive transport. Remarkably, the scaled diffusivity $\hat{D}$ characterizing transport exhibits scaling collapse with respect to the occupation fraction $p$ of sites along the channel. We present a simple "cage-physics" picture that captures the characteristic occupation fraction $p_{scale}$ and the asymptotic $1/…
A peculiarity of the hydrodynamic Navier-Stokes equations for a granular gas is the modification of the Fourier law, with the presence of an additional contribution to the heat flux that is proportional to the density gradient. Consequently, the constitutive relation involves, in the case of a one-component granular gas, two transport coefficients: the usual (thermal) heat conductivity and a diffusive heat conductivity. A very simple physical interpretation of this effect, in terms of the mean free path and the mean free time is provided. It leads to the modified Fourier law with an expression…
We study the Boltzmann equation for a space-homogeneous gas of inelastic hard spheres, with a diffusive term representing a random background forcing. Under the assumption that the initial datum is a nonnegative $L^2$ function, with bounded mass and kinetic energy (second moment), we prove the existence of a solution to this model, which instantaneously becomes smooth and rapidly decaying. Under a weak additional assumption of bounded third moment, the solution is shown to be unique. We also establish the existence (but not uniqueness) of a stationary solution. In addition we show that the hig…
We probe the diffusive motion of particles in slowly sheared three dimensional granular suspensions. For sufficiently large strains, the particle dynamics exhibits diffusive Gaussian statistics, with the diffusivity proportional to the local strain rate - consistent with a local, quasi static picture. Surprisingly, the diffusivity is also inversely proportional to the depth of the particles within the flow - at the free surface, diffusivity is thus ill defined. We find that the crossover to Gaussian displacement statistics is governed by the same depth dependence, evidencing a non-trivial stra…
Single-file diffusion is a one-dimensional interacting infinite-particle system in which the order of particles never changes. An intriguing feature of single-file diffusion is that the mean-square displacement of a tagged particle exhibits an anomalously slow sub-diffusive growth. We study the full statistics of the displacement using a macroscopic fluctuation theory. For the simplest single-file system of impenetrable Brownian particles we compute the large deviation function and provide an independent verification using an exact solution based on the microscopic dynamics. For an arbitrary s…
A general approach is presented for understanding the stress response function in anisotropic granular layers in two dimensions. The formalism accommodates both classical anisotropic elasticity theory and linear theories of anisotropic directed force chain networks. Perhaps surprisingly, two-peak response functions can occur even for classical, anisotropic elastic materials, such as triangular networks of springs with different stiffnesses. In such cases, the peak widths grow linearly with the height of the layer, contrary to the diffusive spreading found in `stress-only' hyperbolic models. In…
We introduce a stochastic equation for the microscopic motion of a tagged particle in the single file model. This equation provides a compact representation of several of the system's properties such as Fluctuation-Dissipation and Linear Response relations, achieved by means of a diffusion noise approach. Most important, the proposed Langevin Equation reproduces quantitatively the \emph{three} temporal regimes and the corresponding time scales: ballistic, diffusive and subdiffusive.
We analyse the long-lasting effects of initial conditions on fluctuations in one-dimensional diffusive systems. We consider both the fluctuations of current for non-interacting diffusive particles starting from a step-like initial density profile, and the mean-square displacement of tracers in homogeneous systems with single-file diffusion. For these two cases, we show analytically (via the propagator and Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory, respectively) that the long-term memory of initial conditions is mediated by a single static quantity: a generalized compressibility that quantifies the densit…
Statistical properties of the front of a semi-infinite system of single-file diffusion (one dimensional system where particles cannot pass each other, but in-between collisions each one independently follow diffusive motion) are investigated. Exact as well as asymptotic results are provided for the probability density function of (a) the front-position, (b) the maximum of the front-positions, and (c) the first-passage time to a given position. The asymptotic laws for the front-position and the maximum front-position are found to be governed by the Fisher-Tippett-Gumbel extreme value statistics…
We study a minimal model of self-propelled particle in a crowded single-file environment. We extend classical models of exclusion processes (previously analyzed for diffusive and driven tracer particles) to the case where the tracer particle is a run-and-tumble particle (RTP), while all bath particles perform symmetric random walks. In the limit of high density of bath particles, we derive exact expressions for the full distribution $\mathcal{P}_n(X)$ of the RTP position $X$ and all its cumulants, valid for arbitrary values of the tumbling probability $α$ and time $n$. Our results highlight st…
We analyze the influence of boundary conditions on numerical simulations of the diffusive properties of a two dimensional granular gas. We show in particular that periodic boundary conditions introduce unphysical correlations in time which cause the coefficient of diffusion to be strongly dependent on the system size. On the other hand, in large enough systems with hard walls at the boundaries, diffusion is found to be independent of the system size. We compare the results obtained in this case with Langevin theory for an elastic gas. Good agreement is found. We then calculate the relaxation t…
Diffusion of impenetrable particles in a crowded one-dimensional channel is referred as the single file diffusion. The particles do not pass each other and the displacement of each individual particle is sub-diffusive. We analyse a simple realization of this single file diffusion problem where one dimensional Brownian point particles interact only by hard-core repulsion. We show that the large deviation function which characterizes the displacement of a tracer at large time can be computed via a mapping to a problem of non-interacting Brownian particles. We confirm recently obtained results of…
We apply the macroscopic fluctuation theory to analyze the long-time statistics of the position of a tracer in the dense and the dilute limits of diffusive single-file systems. Our explicit results are about the corresponding large deviation functions for an initial step density profile with the fluctuating (annealed) and the fixed (quenched) initial conditions. These hydrodynamic results are applicable for a general single-file system and they confirm recent exact results obtained by microscopic solutions for specific model systems.
We study the formation and the dynamics of correlations in the velocity field for 1D and 2D cooling granular gases with the assumption of negligible density fluctuations (``Homogeneous Velocity-correlated Cooling State'', HVCS). It is shown that the predictions of mean field models fail when velocity fluctuations become important. The study of correlations is done by means of molecular dynamics and introducing an Inelastic Lattice Maxwell Models. This lattice model is able to reproduce all the properties of the Homogeneous Cooling State and several features of the HVCS. Moreover it allows very…
In colloidal systems, Brownian motion emerges from the massive separation of time and length scales associated to characteristic dynamics of the solute and solvent constituents. This separation of scales produces several temporal regimes in the colloidal dynamics when combined with the effects of the interaction between the particles, confinement conditions, and state variables, such as density and temperature. Some examples are the short- and long-time regimes in two- and three-dimensional open systems and the diffusive and sub-diffusive regimes observed in the single-file dynamics along a st…
An impurity particle coupling to its host fluid via inelastic hard sphere collisions is considered. It is shown that the exact equation for its distribution function can be mapped onto that for an impurity with elastic collisions and an effective mass. Application of this result to the Enskog--Lorentz kinetic equation leads to several conclusions: 1) every solution in the elastic case is equivalent to a class of solutions in the granular case; 2) for an equilibrium host fluid the granular impurity approaches equilibrium at a different temperature, with a dominant diffusive mode at long times; …
We study a homogeneously driven granular fluid of hard spheres at intermediate volume fractions and focus on time-delayed correlation functions in the stationary state. Inelastic collisions are modeled by incomplete normal restitution, allowing for efficient simulations with an event-driven algorithm. The incoherent scattering function, F_incoh(q,t), is seen to follow time-density superposition with a relaxation time that increases significantly as volume fraction increases. The statistics of particle displacements is approximately Gaussian. For the coherent scattering function S(q,omega) we c…
We study the single-file dynamics of three classes of active particles: run-and-tumble particles, active Brownian particles and active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles. At high activity values, the particles, interacting via purely repulsive and short-ranged forces, aggregate into several motile and dynamical clusters of comparable size, and do not display bulk phase-segregation. In this dynamical steady-state, we find that the cluster size distribution of these aggregates is a scaled function of the density and activity parameters across the three models of active particles with the same scaling …
We consider lattice gas diffusive dynamics with creation-annihilation in the bulk and maintained out of equilibrium by two reservoirs at the boundaries. This stochastic particle system can be viewed as a toy model for granular gases where the energy is injected at the boundary and dissipated in the bulk. The large deviation functional for the particle currents flowing through the system is computed and some physical consequences are discussed: the mechanism for local current fluctuations, dynamical phase transitions, the fluctuation-relation.
Diffusive properties of a monodisperse system of interacting particles confined to a \textit{quasi}-one-dimensional (Q1D) channel are studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We calculate numerically the mean-squared displacement (MSD) and investigate the influence of the width of the channel (or the strength of the confinement potential) on diffusion in finite-size channels of different shapes (i.e., straight and circular). The transition from single-file diffusion (SFD) to the two-dimensional diffusion regime is investigated. This transition (regarding the calculation of the scalin…
The rectification of a single file of attracting particles subjected to a low frequency ac drive is proposed as a working mechanism for particle shuttling in an asymmetric narrow channel. Increasing the particle attraction results in the file condensing, as signalled by the dramatic enhancement of the net particle current. Magnitude and direction of the current become extremely sensitive to the actual size of the condensate, which can then be made to shuttle between two docking stations, transporting particles in one direction, with an efficiency much larger than conventional diffusive models …
The nature of the velocity distribution of a driven granular gas, though well studied, is unknown as to whether it is universal or not, and if universal what it is. We determine the tails of the steady state velocity distribution of a driven inelastic Maxwell gas, which is a simple model of a granular gas where the rate of collision between particles is independent of the separation as well as the relative velocity. We show that the steady state velocity distribution is non-universal and depends strongly on the nature of driving. The asymptotic behavior of the velocity distribution are shown t…
We study the properties of a one-dimensional (1D) granular gas consisting of $N$ hard rods on a line of length $L$ (with periodic boundary conditions). The particles collide inelastically and are fluidized by a heat bath at temperature $T_b$ and viscosity $γ$. The analysis is supported by molecular dynamics simulations. The average properties of the system are first discussed, focusing on the relations between granular temperature $T_g=m< v^2>$, kinetic pressure and density $ρ=N/L$. Thereafter, we consider the fluctuations around the average behavior obtaining a slightly non-Gaussian behavior …
We consider the steady states of a driven inelastic Maxwell gas consisting of two types of particles with scalar velocities. Motivated by experiments on bilayers where only one layer is driven, we focus on the case when only one of the two types of particles are driven externally, with the other species receiving energy only through inter-particle collision. The velocity $v$ of a particle that is driven is modified to $-r_w v+η$, where $r_w$ parameterises the dissipation upon the driving and the noise $η$ is taken from a fixed distribution. We characterize the statistics for small velocities b…
Granular materials such as sand, powders, and grains are omnipresent in daily life, industrial applications, and earth-science [1]. When unperturbed, they form stable structures that resemble the ones of other amorphous solids like metallic and colloidal glasses [2]. It is commonly conjectured that all these amorphous materials show a universal mechanical response when sheared slowly, i.e., to have an elastic regime, followed by yielding [3]. Here we use X-ray tomography to determine the microscopic dynamics of a cyclically sheared granular system in three dimensions. Independent of the shear …
Understanding the physics of non-equilibrium systems remains as one of the major open questions in statistical physics. This problem can be partially handled by investigating macroscopic fluctuations of key magnitudes that characterise the non-equilibrium behaviour of the system of interest; their statistics, associated structures and microscopic origin. During the last years, some new general and powerful methods have appeared to delve into fluctuating behaviour that have drastically changed the way to address this problem in the realm of diffusive systems: macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT…
Several sub-diffusive stochastic processes in nature, e.g., motion of tagged monomer in polymers, height fluctuation of interfaces and particle dynamics in single-file diffusion etc. can be described rigorously or approximately by the superposition of various modes whose relaxation times are broadly distributed. In this paper, we propose a mode analysis generating super-diffusion, which is paired or complementary with that for sub-diffusion. The key point in our discussion lies in the identification of a pair of conjugated variables, which undergoes sub- and super-diffusion, respectively. We p…
