We study a homogeneously driven granular fluid of hard spheres at intermediate volume fractions and focus on time-delayed correlation functions in the stationary state. Inelastic collisions are modeled by incomplete normal restitution, allowing for efficient simulations with an event-driven algorithm. The incoherent scattering function, F_incoh(q,t), is seen to follow time-density superposition with a relaxation time that increases significantly as volume fraction increases. The statistics of particle displacements is approximately Gaussian. For the coherent scattering function S(q,omega) we compare our results to the predictions of generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics which takes into account that temperature fluctuations decay either diffusively or with a finite relaxation rate, depending on wave number and inelasticity. For sufficiently small wave number q we observe sound waves in the coherent scattering function S(q,omega) and the longitudinal current correlation function C_l(q,omega). We determine the speed of sound and the transport coefficients and compare them to the results of kinetic theory.
A numerical hydrodynamic model of a vibrated granular bed in 2D is elaborated based on a highly accurate Shock Capturing scheme applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for granular flow. The hydrodynamic simulation of granular flows is numerically difficult, particularly in systems where dilute and dense regions occur at the same time and interact with each other. As an example of such a problematic system we investigate the formation of Faraday waves in a 2d system which is exposed to vertical vibration in the presence of gravity. The results of the CHD agree quantitatively well w…
We derive the representation of the nonequilibrium steady-state distribution function which is expressed in terms of the excess free energy production. This representation resembles the one derived recently by Komatsu and Nakagawa [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 (2008), 030601] resting on the use of microscopic time-reversal symmetry, but our representation applies also to sheared granular systems in which such a symmetry is broken.
Dynamical behavior of steady granular flow is investigated numerically in the inelastic hard sphere limit of the soft sphere model. We find distinctively different limiting behaviors for the two flow regimes, i.e., the collisional flow and the frictional flow. In the collisional flow, the hard sphere limit is straightforward; the number of collisions per particle per unit time converges to a finite value and the total contact time fraction with other particles goes to zero. For the frictional flow, however, we demonstrate that the collision rate diverges as the power of the particle stiffness …
We study the dynamics of a granular gas heated by the stochastic thermostat. From a Boltzmann description, we derive the hydrodynamic equations for small perturbations around the stationary state that is reached in the long time limit. Transport coefficients are identified as Green-Kubo formulas obtaining explicit expressions as a function of the inelasticity and the spacial dimension.
The stochastic properties of the total internal energy of a dilute granular gas in the steady uniform shear flow state are investigated. A recent theory formulated for fluctuations about the homogeneous cooling state is extended by analogy with molecular systems. The theoretical predictions are compared with molecular dynamics simulation results. Good agreement is found in the limit of weak inelasticity, while systematic and relevant discrepancies are observed when the inelasticity increases. The origin of this behavior is discussed.
Small perturbations of the homogeneous cooling state (HCS) for a low density granular gas are described by means of the linearized Boltzmann equation. The spectrum of the generator for this dynamics is shown to contain points corresponding to hydrodynamic excitations. The corresponding eigenvectors and eigenvalues are calculated to Navier-Stokes order and shown to agree with those obtained by the Chapman-Enskog method. The conditions for the hydrodynamic excitations to dominate all other excitations are discussed.
The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the linearized Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (d=3) or disks (d=2) corresponding to d+2 hydrodynamic modes, are calculated in the long wavelength limit for a granular gas. The transport coefficients are identified and found to agree with those from the Chapman-Enskog solution. The dominance of hydrodynamic modes at long times and long wavelengths is studied via an exactly solvable kinetic model. A collisional continuum is bounded away from the hydrodynamic spectrum, assuring a hydrodynamic description at long times. The bound is closely rela…
A model for the dynamical evolution of a granular binary mixture is analyzed. This system is submitted to a tapping procedure, similarly to what is done in real experiments. In the weak vibration limit, an effective dynamics for the tapping process is derived, and the steady state probability distribution is analytically found. The steady probability does not depend on the details of the configuration, but only on the number of particles of each of the two species. Depending on the values of their fugacities, the system can be either almost full of small or big particles, i.e., segregation eff…
An experimental study is presented, about transitions between Non-Equilibrium Steady States (NESS) in a dissipative medium. The core device is a small rotating blade that imposes cycles of increasing and decreasing forcings to a granular gas, shaken independently. The velocity of this blade is measured, subject to the transitions imposed by the periodic torque variation. The Hatano-Sasa equality, that generalises the second principle of thermodynamics to NESS, is verified with a high accuracy (a few $10^{-3}$), at different variation rates. Besides, it is observed that the fluctuating velocity…
Velocity correlations in a 2D granular fluid are studied in experiments and numerical simulations. The transverse component of the velocity structure factor reveals two well defined energy scales, associated with the external "bath temperature" $T_b$ and with the internal granular one, $T_g<T_b$, relevant at large and small wavelengths respectively. Experimental and numerical data are discussed within a fluctuating hydrodynamics model, which allows one to define and measure a non-equilibrium coherence length $ξ$, growing with density, that characterizes order in the velocity field.
Both the right and left eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the linearized homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell molecules corresponding to the hydrodynamic modes are calculated. Also, some non-hydrodynamic modes are identified. It is shown that below a critical value of the parameter characterizing the inelasticity, one of the kinetic modes decays slower than one of the hydrodynamic ones. As a consequence, a closed hydrodynamic description does not exist in that regime. Some implications of this behavior on the formally computed Navier-Stokes transport coefficients are discussed.
We present a universal description of the velocity distribution function of granular gases, $f(v)$, valid for both, small and intermediate velocities where $v$ is close to the thermal velocity and also for large $v$ where the distribution function reveals an exponentially decaying tail. By means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations and by kinetic theory we show that the deviation from the Maxwell distribution in the high-energy tail leads to small but detectable variation of the cooling coefficient and to extraordinary large relaxation time.
We propose a systematic expansion method which is applied to freely evolving granular fluids contained in sufficiently small systems. Restricting ourselves to small systems, we show that there exists a small parameter which characterizes a typical size of density and temperature inhomogeneities. A solution of the hydrodynamic equations for a fluid of inelastic hard spheres is expanded in the small parameter. It is shown that our method quantitatively describes the asymptotic state of the system, such as flow profiles, density and temperature inhomogeneities, and the decay law of the global tem…
The linear hydrodynamic stability of a model for confined quasi-two-dimensional granular gases is analyzed. The system exhibits homogeneous hydrodynamics, i.e. there are macroscopic evolution equations for homogeneous states. The stability analysis is carried out around all these states and not only the homogeneous steady state reached eventually by the system. It is shown that in some cases the linear analysis is not enough to reach a definite conclusion on the stability, and molecular dynamics simulation results are presented to elucidate these cases. The analysis shows the relevance of nonl…
Comment on the paper J. Solsvik and E. Manger, "Kinetic theory models for granular mixtures with unequal granular temperature: Hydrodynamic velocity," Phys. Fluids \textbf{33}, 043321 (2021).
We derive the generalized Green-Kubo relation and an integral form of the fluctuation theorem that apply to uniformly sheared granular systems in which microscopic time-reversal symmetry is broken. The former relation provides an exact representation of nonequilibrium steady-state properties as the integral of the time-correlation function describing transient dynamics from an initial quiescent towards a final sheared steady state. We also investigate implications of the integral fluctuation theorem on the approach towards the steady state and on the possible form of the steady-state distribut…
The hydrodynamic equation governing the homogeneous time evolution of the temperature in a model of confined granular gas is studied by means of the Enskog equation. The existence of a normal solution of the kinetic equation is assumed as a condition for hydrodynamics. Dimensional analysis implies a scaling of the distribution function that is used to determine it in the first Sonine approximation, with a coefficient that evolves in time through its dependence on the temperature. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo metho…
A linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations of a model for confined quasi-two-dimensional granular gases is carried out. The stability analysis is performed around the homogeneous steady state (HSS) reached eventually by the system after a transient regime. In contrast to previous studies (which considered dilute or quasielastic systems), our analysis is based on the results obtained from the inelastic Enskog kinetic equation, which takes into account the (nonlinear) dependence of the transport coefficients and the cooling rate on dissipation and applies to moderate densities. As…
We study a two-dimensional granular system where external driving force is applied to each particle in the system in such a way that the system is driven into a steady state by balancing the energy input and the dissipation due to inelastic collision between particles. The velocities of the particles in the steady state satisfy the Maxwellian distribution. We measure the density-density correlation and the velocity-velocity correlation functions in the steady state and find that they are of power-law scaling forms. The locations of collision events are observed to be time-correlated and such a…
The hydrodynamic state of an impurity immersed in a low density granular gas is analyzed. Explicit expressions for the temperature and density fields of the impurity in terms of the hydrodynamic fields of the gas are derived. It is shown that the ratio between the temperatures of the two components, measuring the departure from energy equipartition, only depends on the mechanical properties of the particles, being therefore constant in the bulk of the system. This ratio plays an important role in determining the density profile of the intruder and its position with respect to the gas, since it…
The linearized Boltzmann equation is considered to describe small spatial perturbations of the homogeneous cooling state. The corresponding macroscopic balance equations for the density, temperature, and flow velocity are derived from it as the basis for a hydrodynamic description. Hydrodynamics is defined in terms of the spectrum of the generator for the dynamics of the linearized Boltzmann equation. The hydrodynamic eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are calculated in the long wavelength limit. The results allow identification of the hydrodynamic part of the solution to the linearized Boltzmann …
The properties of a dilute granular gas in the homogeneous cooling state are mapped to those of a stationary state by means of a change in the time scale that does not involve any internal property of the system. The new representation is closely related with a general property of the granular temperature in the long time limit. The physical and practical implications of the mapping are discussed. In particular, simulation results obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method applied to the scaled dynamics are reported. This includes ensemble averages and also the velocity autocorrelati…
We study a granular gas heated by a stochastic thermostat in the dilute limit. Starting from the kinetic equations governing the evolution of the correlation functions, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation is constructed. The spectrum of the corresponding linearized Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck operator is analyzed, and the equation for the fluctuating transverse velocity is derived in the hydrodynamic limit. The noise term (Langevin force) is thus known microscopically and contains two terms: one coming from the thermostat and the other from the fluctuating pressure tensor. At variance with the free cool…
The Navier--Stokes order hydrodynamic equations for a low-density driven granular mixture obtained previously [Khalil and Garzó, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{88}, 052201 (2013)] from the Chapman--Enskog solution to the Boltzmann equation are considered further. The four transport coefficients associated with the heat flux are obtained in terms of the mass ratio, the size ratio, composition, coefficients of restitution, and the driven parameters of the model. Their quantitative variation on the control parameters of the system is demonstrated by considering the leading terms in a Sonine polynomial expa…
The influence of the heating mechanism on the kinetic energy densities of the components of a vibrated granular mixture is investigated. Collisions of the particles with the vibrating wall are inelastic and characterized by two coefficients of normal restitution, one for each of the two species. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that the non-equipartition of kinetic energy is not affected by the differential mechanism of energy injection, aside the usual boundary layer around the wall. The macroscopic state of the mixture in the bulk is defined by intensive variables that…
A granular gas subjected to a permanent injection of energy is described by means of hydrodynamic equations derived from a moment expansion method. The method uses as reference function not a Maxwellian distribution $f_{\sf M}$ but a distribution $f_0 = Φf_{\sf M}$, such that $Φ$ adds a fourth cumulant $κ$ to the velocity distribution. The formalism is applied to a stationary conductive case showing that the theory fits extraordinarily well the results coming from our molecular dynamic simulations once we determine $κ$ as a function of the inelasticity of the particle-particle collisions. The …
The non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and kinetic theory for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional gas of inelastic hard spheres is presented. The dynamics of the particles includes an effective mechanism to transfer the energy injected in the vertical direction to the horizontal degrees of freedom. The Enskog approximation is formulated and used as the basis to investigate the temperature and the distribution function of the steady state eventually reached by the system. An exact scaling of the distribution function of the system having implications on the form of its moments is poi…
The hydrodynamics of granular gases of viscoelastic particles, whose collision is described by an impact-velocity dependent coefficient of restitution, is developed using a modified Chapman-Enskog approach. We derive the hydrodynamic equations and the according transport coefficients with the assumption that the shape of the velocity distribution function follows adiabatically the decaying temperature. We show numerically that this approximation is justified up to intermediate dissipation. The transport coefficients and the coefficient of cooling are expressed in terms of the elastic and dissi…
Hydrodynamic equations for granular gases driven by the Fokker-Planck operator are derived. Transport coefficients appeared in Navier-Stokes order change from the values of a free cooling state to those of a steady state.
It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes of a dilute granular gas of inelastic hard spheres can be identified, and calculated in the long wavelength limit. Assuming they dominate at long times, formal expressions for the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients are derived. They can be expressed in a form that generalizes the Green-Kubo relations for molecular systems, and it is shown that they can also be evaluated by means of $N$-particle simulation methods. The form of the hydrodynamic modes to zeroth order in the gradients is used to detect the presence of inherent velocity correlations in the …
Granular material on an inclined plane will flow like a fluid if the angle $θ$ the plane makes with the horizontal is large enough. We employ a modification of a hydrodynamic model introduced previously to describe Couette flow experiments to describe chute flow down a plane. In this geometry, our model predicts a jammed-to-flowing transition as $θ$ is increased even though it does not include solid friction, which might seem necessary to stabilize a state without flow. The transition is driven by coupling between mean and fluctuating velocity. In agreement with experiments and simulations, it…
The transport coefficients of a granular fluid driven by a stochastic bath with friction are obtained by solving the inelastic Enskog kinetic equation from the Chapman-Enskog method. The heat and momentum fluxes as well as the cooling rate are determined to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the homogeneous steady state. Since the collisional cooling cannot be compensated locally for the heat produced by the external driving force, the reference distribution $f^{(0)}$ (zeroth-order approximation) depends on time through its dependence on temp…
The hydrodynamic equations for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional gas of smooth inelastic hard spheres are derived from the Boltzmann equation for the model, using a generalization of the Chapman-Enskog method. The heat and momentum fluxes are calculated to Navier-Stokes order, and the associated transport coefficients are explicitly determined as functions of the coefficient of normal restitution and the velocity parameter involved in the definition of the model. Also an Euler transport term contributing to the energy transport equation is considered. This term arises from the gradie…
General conservation equations are derived for 2D dense granular flows from the Euler equation within the Boussinesq approximation. In steady flows, the 2D fields of granular temperature, vorticity and stream function are shown to be encoded in two scalar functions only. We checked such prediction on steady surface flows in a rotating drum simulated through the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method. This result is non trivial because granular flows are dissipative and therefore not necessarily compatible with Euler equation. Finally, we briefly discuss some possible ways to predict theoretically …
We introduce a model described in terms of a scalar velocity field on a 1d lattice, evolving through collisions that conserve momentum but do not conserve energy. Such a system posseses some of the main ingredients of fluidized granular media and naturally models them. We deduce non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics equations for the macroscopic velocity and temperature fields, which replicate the hydrody- namics of shear modes in a granular fluid. Moreover, this Landau-like fluctuating hydrodynamics predicts an essential part of the peculiar behaviour of granular flu- ids, like the instability…
We investigate experimentally granular piles exhibiting steady surface flow. Below the surface flow, it has been believed exisitence of a `frozen' bulk region, but our results show absence of such a frozen bulk. We report here that even the particles in deep layers in the bulk exhibit very slow flow and that such motion can be detected at an arbitrary depth. The mean velocity of the creep motion decays exponentially with depth, and the characteristic decay length is approximately equal to the particle-size and independent of the flow rate. It is expected that the creep motion we have seeen is …
Starting from the kinetic equations for the fluctuations and correlations of a dilute gas of inelastic hard spheres or disks, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation for the one-particle distribution function of the homogeneous cooling state is constructed. This equation is the linear Boltzmann equation with a fluctuating white noise term. Balance equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamic fields are derived. New fluctuating forces appear as compared with the elastic limit. The particular case of the transverse velocity field is investigated in detail. Its fluctuations can be described by means of a Lan…
We perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study heated granular fluids in three dimensions. Granular particles dissipate their kinetic energy due to solid frictional interaction with other particles. The velocity of each particle is perturbed by a uniformly-distributed random noise, which mimics the heating. At the early stage of evolution, the kinetic energy of the system decays with time and reaches a steady state at a later stage. The velocity distribution in the steady state shows a non-Gaussian distribution. This has been characterized by using the Sonine polynomial expansi…
The homogeneous state of a granular flow of smooth inelastic hard spheres or disks described by the Enskog-Boltzmann kinetic equation is analyzed. The granular gas is fluidized by the presence of a random force and a drag force. The combined action of both forces, that act homogeneously on the granular gas, tries to mimic the interaction of the set of particles with a surrounding fluid. The first stochastic force thermalizes the system, providing for the necessary energy recovery to keep the system in its gas state at all times, whereas the second force allows us to mimic the action of the sur…
A numerical molecular dynamics experiment measuring the two-time correlation function of the transversal velocity field in the homogeneous cooling state of a granular gas is reported. By measuring the decay rate and the amplitude of the correlations, the accuracy of the Landau-Langevin equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics is checked. The results indicate that although a Langevin approach can be valid, the fluctuation-dissipation relation must be modified, since the viscosity parameter appearing in it differs from the usual hydrodynamic shear viscosity.
The steady state packing fraction of a tapped granular bed is studied for different grain shapes via a discrete element method. Grains are monosized regular polygons, from triangles to icosagons. Comparisons with disk packings show that the steady state packing fraction as a function of the tapping intensity presents the same general trends in polygon packings. However, better packing fractions are obtained, as expected, for shapes that can tessellate the plane (triangles, squares and hexagons). In addition, we find a sharp transition for packings of polygons with more than 13 vertices signale…
We present a hydrodynamic theoretical model for "Brazil nut" size segregation in granular materials. We give analytical solutions for the rise velocity of a large intruder particle immersed in a medium of monodisperse fluidized small particles. We propose a new mechanism for this particle size-segregation due to buoyant forces caused by density variations which come from differences in the local "granular temperature". The mobility of the particles is modified by the energy dissipation due to inelastic collisions and this leads to a different behavior from what one would expect for an elastic …
These are notes prepared for presentation at the workshop "Challenges in Granular Matter" at the Abdus Salam Institute for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, August 2001. Revisions and figures will be added at a later date. Many features of real granular fluids under rapid flow are replicated by a system of smooth hard spheres with inelastic collisions. For such a system, it is tempting to apply standard methods of kinetic theory and hydrodynamics to calculate properties of interest. The domain of validity for such methods is a priori uncertain due to the inelasticity, but recent systemmatic studie…
The nonequilibrium steady state of a granular fluid, driven by a random external force, is demonstrated to exhibit long range correlations, which behave as $\sim 1/r$ in three and $\sim \ln(L/r)$ in two dimensions. We calculate the corresponding structure factors over the whole range of wave numbers, and find good agreement with two-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations. It is also shown by means of a mode coupling calculation, how the mean field values for the steady state temperature and collision frequency, as obtained from the Enskog-Boltzmann equation, are renormalized by long wavele…
We investigate steady state solutions of hydrodynamic traffic models in the absence of any intrinsic inhomogeneity on roads such as on-ramps. It is shown that typical hydrodynamic models possess seven different types of inhomogeneous steady state solutions. The seven solutions include those that have been reported previously only for microscopic models. The characteristic properties of wide jam such as moving velocity of its spatiotemporal pattern and/or out-flux from wide jam are shown to be uniquely determined and thus independent of initial conditions of dynamic evolution. Topological consi…
We investigate hydrodynamic fluctuations in a 2D granular fluid excited by a vibrating base and in the presence of gravity, focusing on the transverse velocity modes. Since the system is inhomogeneous, we measure fluctuations in horizontal layers whose width is smaller than the characteristic hydrodynamic lengths: they can be considered as almost-homogeneous subsystems. The large time decay of autocorrelations of modes is exponential and compatible with vorticity diffusion due to shear viscosity, as in equilibrium fluids. The velocity structure factor, which strongly deviates from the equilibr…
We analyze, experimentally and numerically, the steady states, obtained by tapping, of a 2D granular layer. Contrary to the usual assumption, we show that the reversible (steady state branch) of the density--acceleration curve is nonmonotonous. Accordingly, steady states with the same mean volume can be reached by tapping the system with very different intensities. Simulations of dissipative frictional disks show that equal volume steady states have different values of the force moment tensor. Additionally, we find that steady states of equal stress can be obtained by changing the duration of …
The evolution to the steady state of a granular gas subject to simple shear flow is analyzed by means of computer simulations. It is found that, regardless of its initial preparation, the system reaches (after a transient period lasting a few collisions per particle) a non-Newtonian (unsteady) hydrodynamic regime, even at strong dissipation and for states where the time scale associated with inelastic cooling is shorter than the one associated with the irreversible fluxes. Comparison with a simplified rheological model shows a good agreement.
The basis for a hydrodynamic description of granular gases is discussed for a low density gas of smooth, inelastic hard spheres. The more fundamental mesoscopic description is taken to be the nonlinear Boltzmann kinetic equation. Two arguments are presented in favor of a hydrodynamics for granular gases. The first one is the concept of a "normal" solution and its explicit approximate construction via the Chapman-Enskog method. The second is the demonstration of hydrodynamic modes in the spectrum of the generator for the dynamics of small spatial perturbations of the homogeneous reference state…
In this review, a theoretical description is provided for the solid (granular) phase of the gas-solid flows that are the focus of this book. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental concepts involved in deriving a macroscopic hydrodynamic description for the granular material in terms of the hydrodynamic fields (species densities, flow velocity, and the granular temperature) from a prescribed "microscopic" interaction among the grains. To this end, the role of the interstitial gas phase, body forces such as gravity, and other coupling to the environment are suppressed and retained only via a poss…
We investigate a lattice model representing a granular gas in a thin channel. We deduce the hydrodynamic description for the model from the microscopic dynamics in the large system limit, including the lowest finite-size corrections. The main prediction from hydrodynamics, when finite-size corrections are neglected, is the existence of a steady "uniform longitudinal flow" (ULF), with the granular temperature and the velocity gradient both uniform and directly related. Extensive numerical simulations of the system show that such a state can be observed in the bulk of a finite-size system by att…
The Enskog kinetic theory for moderately dense granular suspensions is considered as a model to determine the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients. The influence of the interstitial gas on solid particles is modeled by a viscous drag force term plus a stochastic Langevin-like term. The suspension model is solved by means of the Chapman--Enskog method conveniently adapted to dissipative dynamics. The momentum and heat fluxes as well as the cooling rate are obtained to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the homogeneous steady state. Since the c…
Confined granular fluids, placed in a shallow box that is vibrated vertically, can achieve homogeneous stationary states thanks to energy injection mechanisms that take place throughout the system. These states can be stable even at high densities and inelasticities allowing for a detailed analysis of the hydrodynamic modes that govern the dynamics of granular fluids. Analyzing the decay of the time correlation functions it is shown that there is a crossover between a quasielastic regime in which energy evolves as a slow mode, to a inelastic regime, with energy slaved to the other conserved fi…
A granular gas may be modeled as a set of hard-spheres undergoing inelastic collisions; its microscopic dynamics is thus strongly irreversible. As pointed out in several experimental works bearing on turbulent flows or granular materials, the power injected in a dissipative system to sustain a steady-state over an asymptotically large time window is a central observable. We describe an analytic approach allowing us to determine the full distribution of the power injected in a granular gas within a steady-state resulting from subjecting each particle independently either to a random force (stoc…
Segregation induced by a thermal gradient of an impurity in a driven low-density granular gas is studied. The system is enclosed between two parallel walls from which we input thermal energy to the gas. We study here steady states occurring when the inelastic cooling is exactly balanced by some external energy input (stochastic force or viscous heating), resulting in a uniform heat flux. A segregation criterion based on Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics is written in terms of the tracer diffusion transport coefficients, whose dependence on the parameters of the system (masses, sizes and coe…
A low density binary mixture of granular gases is considered within the Boltzmann kinetic theory. One component, the intruders, is taken to be dilute with respect to the other, and thermal segregation of the two species is described for a special exact solution to the Boltzmann equation. This solution has a macroscopic hydrodynamic representation with a constant temperature gradient and is referred to as the Fourier state. The thermal diffusion factor characterizing conditions for segregation is calculated without the usual restriction to Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics. Molecular dynamics simulat…
We study in this work steady laminar flows in a low density granular gas modelled as a system of identical smooth hard spheres that collide inelastically. The system is excited by shear and temperature sources at the boundaries, which consist of two infinite parallel walls. Thus, the geometry of the system is the same that yields the planar Fourier and Couette flows in standard gases. We show that it is possible to describe the steady granular flows in this system, even at large inelasticities, by means of a (non-Newtonian) hydrodynamic approach. All five types of Couette-Fourier granular flow…
We describe a special class of steady Couette flows in dilute granular gases admitting a non-Newtonian hydrodynamic description for strong dissipation. The class occurs when viscous heating exactly balances inelastic cooling, resulting in a uniform heat flux. It includes the Fourier flow of ordinary gases and the simple or uniform shear flow (USF) of granular gases as special cases. The rheological functions have the same values as in the USF and generalized thermal conductivity coefficients can be identified. These points are confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, Monte Carlo simulation…
Static and dynamical structure factors for shear and longitudinal modes of the velocity and density fields are computed for a granular system fluidized by a stochastic bath with friction. Analytical expressions are obtained through fluctuating hydrodynamics and are successfully compared with numerical simulations up to a volume fraction $\sim 50%$. Hydrodynamic noise is the sum of external noise due to the bath and internal one due to collisions. Only the latter is assumed to satisfy the fluctuation-dissipation relation with the average granular temperature. Static velocity structure factors $…
We numerically study a two-dimensional granular gas of rigid disks where an external driving force is applied to each particle in such a way that the system is driven into a steady state by balancing the energy input and the dissipation due to inelastic collisions. Two intruder particles embedded in this correlated medium experience a fluctuation-induced force -- that is itself a fluctuating quantity -- due to the confinement of the hydrodynamic fluctuations between them. We find that the probability distribution of this force is a Gaussian centered on a value that is proportional to the stead…
