We provide a family of representations of GL(2n) over a p-adic field that admit a non-vanishing linear functional invariant under the symplectic group (i.e. representations that are Sp(2n)- distinguished). While our result generalizes a result of M. Heumos and S. Rallis our methods, unlike their purely local technique, re- lies on the theory of automorphic forms. The results of this paper together with later works by the authors imply that the family of representations studied in this paper contains all irreducible, unitary representations of the general linear group that are distin- guished by the symplectic group.
We show the equality of the local Asai L-functions defined via the Rankin-Selberg method and the Langlands-Shahidi method for a square integrable representation of GL(n,E). As a consequence we characterise reducibility of certain induced representations of U(n,n), and the image of the base change map from U(n) to GL(n,E) in terms of GL(n,F)-distinguishedness.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, and $K$ a quadratic extension of $F$. Using Tadic's classification of the unitary dual of $GL(n,K)$, we give the list of irreducible unitary representations of this group distinguished by $GL(n,F)$, in terms of distinguished discrete series. As it is known that a generalised Steinberg representation $St(k,ρ)$ is distinguished if and only if the cuspidal representation $ρ$ is $η^{k-1}$-distinguished, for $η$ the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $K^*$, this actually gives a classification of distinguished unitary representations in terms of distinguished c…
In analogy with the study of representations of $GL_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$, where $F$ is a local field, in this paper we study representations of $U_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$. (Only quasi-split unitary groups are considered in this paper since they are the only ones which contain $Sp_{2n}(F)$.) We prove that there are no cuspidal representations of $U_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$ for $F$ a non-archimedean local field. We also prove the corresponding global theorem that there are no cuspidal representations of $U_{2n}({\mathbb A}_k)$ with nonzero period in…
We construct explicit local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>2$, whose geometric monodromy groups are the finite symplectic groups $Sp_{2n}(q)$ for all $n \ge 2$, and others whose geometric monodromy groups are the special unitary groups $SU_n(q)$ for all odd $n \ge 3$, and $q$ any power of $p$, in their total Weil representations. One principal merit of these local systems is that their associated trace functions are one-parameter families of exponential sums of a very simple, i.e., easy to remember, form. We also exhibit hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m$, whose geometric monodro…
We study ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(F)$-distinction for representations of the quasi-split unitary group $U_{2n}(E/F)$ in $2n$ variables with respect to a quadratic extension $E/F$ of $p$-adic fields. A conjecture of Dijols and Prasad predicts that no tempered representation is distinguished. We verify this for a large family of representations in terms of the Moeglin-Tadic classification of the discrete series. We further study distinction for some families of non-tempered representations. In particular, we exhibit $L$-packets with no distinguished members that transfer under stable base change to ${\rm …
Over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero, we prove the multiplicity preservation for orthogonal-symplectic dual pair correspondences and unitary dual pair correspondences.
In this paper we study the question of determining when an irreducible admissible representation of ${\rm GL}_n(D)$ admits a symplectic model, that is when such a representation has a linear functional invariant under ${\rm Sp}_n(D)$, where $D$ is a quaternion division algebra over a non-Archimedian local field $k$ and ${\rm Sp}_{n}(D)$ is the unique non-split inner form of the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(k)$. We show that if a representation has a symplectic model it is necessarily unique. For ${\rm GL}_2(D)$ we completely classify those representations which have a symplectic model. Glob…
Let $G = {\rm U}(2m, {\mathbb F}_{q^2})$ be the finite unitary group, with $q$ the power of an odd prime $p$. We prove that the number of irreducible complex characters of $G$ with degree not divisible by $p$ and with Frobenius-Schur indicator -1 is $q^{m-1}$. We also obtain a combinatorial formula for the value of any character of ${\rm U}(n, {\mathbb F}_{q^2})$ at any central element, using the characteristic map of the finite unitary group.
An irreducible ordinary character of a finite reductive group is called quadratic unipotent if it corresponds under Jordan decomposition to a semisimple element $s$ in a dual group such that $s^2=1$. We prove that there is a bijection between, on the one hand the set of quadratic unipotent characters of $GL(n,q)$ or $U(n,q)$ for all $n \geq 0$ and on the other hand, the set of quadratic unipotent characters of $Sp(2n,q)$ for all $n \geq 0$. We then extend this correspondence to $\ell$-blocks for certain $\ell$ not dividing $q$.
Let $K$ be a compact Lie group of positive dimension. We show that for most unitary $K$-modules the corresponding symplectic quotient is not regularly symplectomorphic to a linear symplectic orbifold (the quotient of a unitary module of a finite group). When $K$ is connected, we show that even a symplectomorphism to a linear symplectic orbifold does not exist. Our results yield conditions that preclude the symplectic quotient of a Hamiltonian $K$-manifold from being locally isomorphic to an orbifold. As an application, we determine which unitary $\operatorname{SU}_2$-modules yield symplectic q…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-Archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. Let $D$ be the unique quaternion division algebra over $F$ and fix an embedding of $E$ to $D$. Then, $\mathrm{GL}_m(D)$ can be regarded as a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_{2m}(E)$. Using the method of Matringe, we classify irreducible generic $\mathrm{GL}_m(D)$-distinguished representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{2m}(E)$ in terms of Zelevinsky classification. Rewriting the classification in terms of corresponding representations of the Weil-Deligne group of $E$, we prove a sufficient condition for a generic representa…
Let $A$ be a ring with $1\neq 0$, not necessarily finite, endowed with an involution~$*$, that is, an anti-automorphism of order $\leq 2$. Let $H_n(A)$ be the additive group of all $n\times n$ hermitian matrices over $A$ relative to $*$. Let ${\mathcal U}_n(A)$ be the subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(A)$ of all upper triangular matrices with 1's along the main diagonal. Let $P=H_n(A)\rtimes {\mathcal U}_n(A)$, where ${\mathcal U}_n(A)$ acts on $H_n(A)$ by $*$-congruence transformations. We may view $P$ as a unipotent subgroup of either a symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(A)$, if $*=1_A$ (in which c…
In this paper we establish the endoscopic classification of tempered representations of quasi-split unitary groups over local fields, and the endoscopic classification of the discrete automorphic spectrum of quasi-split unitary groups over global number fields. The method is analogous to the work of Arthur on orthogonal and symplectic groups, based on the theory of endoscopy and the comparison of trace formulas on unitary groups and general linear groups.
We prove that when $d>2$, a $d$-dimensional symplectic quotient at the zero level of a unitary circle representation $V$ such that $V^{\Sp^1}=\{0\}$ cannot be $\Z$-graded regularly symplectomorphic to the quotient of a unitary representations of a finite group.
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.
We study the permutation action of a finite symplectic group of characteristic 2 on the set of subspaces of its standard module which are either totally isotropic or else complementary to totally isotropic subspaces with respect to the alternating form. A general formula is obtained for the 2-rank of the incidence matrix for the inclusion of one-dimensional subspaces in the distinguished subspaces of a fixed dimension.
We show that irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent super Lie groups can be obtained by induction from a distinguished class of sub super Lie groups. These sub super Lie groups are natural analogues of polarizing subgroups that appear in classical Kirillov theory. We obtain a concrete geometric parametrization of irreducible unitary representations by nonnegative definite coadjoint orbits. As an application, we prove an analytic generalization of the Stone-von Neumann theorem for Heisenberg-Clifford super Lie groups.
Folloing the methods of Bushnell-Kutzko for general linear groups, we construct simple types attached to certain skew simple strata for a symplectic group and an unramified unitary group over a non-archimedean local field.
In this paper we use the canonical complex structure $\mathbb{J}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to introduce a twist of the symplectic Dirac operator. As a matter of fact, these operators can be interpreted as the bosonic analogues of the Dirac operators on a Hermitian manifold. Moreover, we prove that the algebra of these symplectic Dirac operators is isomorphic to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,2)$ which leads to the Howe dual pair $(\mathsf{U}(n),\mathfrak{su}(1,2))$.
Let $\mathbb{S}$ denote the oscillatory module over the complex symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}= \mathfrak{sp}(\mathbb{V}^{\mathbb{C}},ω).$ Consider the $\mathfrak{g}$-module $\mathbb{W}=\bigwedge^{\bullet}(\mathbb{V}^*)^{\mathbb{C}}\otimes \mathbb{S}$ of exterior forms with values in the oscillatory module. We prove that the associative algebra $\hbox{End}_{\mathfrak{g}}(\mathbb{W})$ is generated by the image of a certain representation of the ortho-symplectic Lie super algebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and two distinguished projection operators. The space $\bigwedge^{\bullet}(\mathbb{V}^*)^…
In this paper we consider the restriction of a unitary irreducible representation of type $A_{\mathfrak q}(λ)$ of $GL(4,{\mathbb R})$ to reductive subgroups $H$ which are the fixpoint sets of an involution. We obtain a formula for the restriction to the symplectic group and to $GL(2,{\mathbb C})$, and as an application we construct in the last section some representations in the cuspidal spectrum of the symplectic and the complex general linear group. In addition to working directly with the cohmologically induced module to obtain the branching law, we also introduce the useful concept of pseu…
We introduce the notion of regular symplectomorphism and graded regular symplectomorphism between singular phase spaces. Our main concern is to exhibit examples of unitary torus representations whose symplectic quotients cannot be graded regularly symplectomorphic to the quotient of a symplectic representation of a finite group, while the corresponding GIT quotients are smooth. Additionally, we relate the question of simplicialness of a torus representation to Gaussian elimination.
We study the restrictions of certain degenerate principal series representations of the universal covering of the symplectic group. We construct an isometry between the complementary series and the unitary principal series which preserves the action of a symplectic subgroup no bigger than half of the size of the original group.
Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. In this paper, we investigate two approaches which attempt to describe the smooth irreducible representations of GL(n,E) that are distinguished by its subgroup GL(n,F). One relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split unitary group F, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. By characterizing the union of images of the base change maps we show that these two approaches are closely related. Using this observation, we are able to prove a statement relati…
We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an…
We give two proofs of a level-rank duality for braided fusion categories obtained from quantum groups of type $C$ at roots of unity. The first proof uses conformal embeddings, while the second uses a classification of braided fusion categories associated with quantum groups of type $C$ at roots of unity. In addition we give a similar result for non-unitary braided fusion categories quantum groups of types $B$ and $C$ at odd roots of unity.
We construct supercharacter theories of finite unipotent groups in the orthogonal, symplectic and unitary types. Our method utilizes group actions in a manner analogous to that of Diaconis and Isaacs in their construction of supercharacters of algebra groups. The resulting supercharacter theories agree with those of André and Neto in the case of the unipotent orthogonal and symplectic matrices and generalize to a large collection of subgroups. In the unitary group case, we describe the supercharacters and superclasses in terms of labeled set partitions and calculate the supercharacter table.
In this paper we first construct natural filtrations on the full theta lifts for any real reductive dual pairs. We will use these filtrations to calculate the associated cycles and therefore the associated varieties of Harish-Chandra modules of the indefinite orthogonal groups which are theta lifts of unitary lowest weight modules of the metaplectic double covers of the real symplectic groups. We will show that some of these representations are special unipotent and satisfy a K-type formula in a conjecture of Vogan.
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.
Let $X$ be a smooth symplectic variety over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>2$ equipped with a restricted structure, which is a class $[η] \in H^0(X, Ω^1_X/d\mathcal O_X)$ whose de Rham differential equals the symplectic form. In this paper we construct a functorial in $(X, [η])$ formal quantization of the category $\mathrm{QCoh}(X)$ of quasi-coherent sheaves on $X$. We also construct its natural extension to a quasi-coherent sheaf of categories $\mathrm{QCoh}_h$ on the product $X^{(1)} \times {\mathbb S}$ of the Frobenius twist of $X$ and the projective line ${\mathbb S}=\mathbb P^1$, viewed…
Let $λ: \tilde{G}\to G$ be the non-trivial double covering of the symplectic group $G=Sp(V,ω)$ of the symplectic vector space $(V,ω)$ by the metaplectic group $\tilde{G}=Mp(V,ω).$ In this case, $λ$ is also a representation of $\tilde{G}$ on the vector space $V$ and thus, it gives rise to the representation of $\tilde{G}$ on the space of exterior forms $\bigwedge^{\bullet}V^*$ by taking wedge products. Let $S$ be the minimal globalization of the Harish-Chandra module of the complex Segal-Shale-Weil representation of the metaplectic group $\tilde{G}.$ We prove that the associative commutant alge…
