In this article, we study the maximal cross number of long zero-sumfree sequences in a finite Abelian group. Regarding this inverse-type problem, we formulate a general conjecture and prove, among other results, that this conjecture holds true for finite cyclic groups, finite Abelian p-groups and for finite Abelian groups of rank two. Also, the results obtained here enable us to improve, via the resolution of a linear integer program, a result of W. Gao and A. Geroldinger concerning the minimal number of elements with maximal order in a long zero-sumfree sequence of a finite Abelian group of rank two.
The inverse problem associated to the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant and the $η$-constant is solved for finite abelian groups of the form $C_2 \oplus C_2 \oplus C_{2n}$ where $n \ge 2$ is an integer.
In this paper, we study the minimal number of elements of maximal order within a zero-sumfree sequence in a finite Abelian p-group. For this purpose, in the general context of finite Abelian groups, we introduce a new number, for which lower and upper bounds are proved in the case of finite Abelian p-groups. Among other consequences, the method that we use here enables us to show that, if we denote by exp(G) the exponent of the finite Abelian p-group G which is considered, then a zero-sumfree sequence S with maximal possible length in G must contain at least exp(G)-1 elements of maximal order,…
Let $K$ be a global field and let $Z$ be a geometrically irreducible algebraic variety defined over $K$. We show that if a big set $S\subseteq Z$ of rational points of bounded height occupies few residue classes modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ for many prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$, then a positive proportion of $S$ must lie in the zero set of a polynomial of low degree that does not vanish at $Z$. This generalizes the main result of Walsh in [Duke Math. J., vol.161, (2012), 2001-2022].
We introduce an algebraic formulation of cyclic sum formulas for multiple zeta values and for multiple zeta-star values. We also present an algebraic proof of cyclic sum formulas for multiple zeta values and for multiple zeta-star values by reducing them to Kawashima relation.
We derive generalizations of a couple of inverse tangent summation identities involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. As byproducts we establish many new inverse tangent identities involving the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.
The paper studies algebraic independence of certain reciprocal sums of Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Also more general binary recurrences are considered. The main tool is Mahler's method reducing the investigation of the algebraic independence of function values to the one of functions if these satisfy certain types of functional equations.
We obtain lower bounds for the cardinality of $k$-fold sum-sets of reciprocals of elements of suitable defined short intervals in high degree extensions of finite fields. Combining our results with bounds for multilinear character sums we obtain new results on incomplete multilinear Kloosterman sums in finite fields.
Let $C_n$ be the cyclic group of order $n$. In this paper, we provide the exact values of some zero-sum constants over $C_n \rtimes_s C_2$ where $s \not\equiv \pm1 \pmod n$, namely $η$-constant, Gao constant, and Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant (the latter for all but a "small" family of cases). As a consequence, we prove the Gao's and Zhuang-Gao's Conjectures for groups of this form. We also solve the associated inverse problems by characterizing the structure of product-one free sequences over $C_n \rtimes_s C_2$ of maximum length.
In this paper, we study the average size of the product of a number and its multiplicative inverse modulo a prime p. This turns out to be related to moments of L-functions and leads to a curious asymptotic formula for a certain triple exponential sum.
We prove quantitative bounds for the inverse theorem for Gowers uniformity norms $\mathsf{U}^5$ and $\mathsf{U}^6$ in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$. The proof starts from an earlier partial result of Gowers and the author which reduces the inverse problem to a study of algebraic properties of certain multilinear forms. The bulk of the work in this paper is a study of the relationship between the natural actions of $\operatorname{Sym}_4$ and $\operatorname{Sym}_5$ on the space of multilinear forms and the partition rank, using an algebraic version of regularity method. Along the way, we give a positive answ…
Let $h\geq 2$ and $A=\{a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_{k-1}\}$ be a finite set of integers. It is well-known that $\left|hA\right|=hk-h+1$ if and only if $A$ is a $k$-term arithmetic progression. In this paper, we give some nontrivial inverse results of the sets $A$ with some extrema the cardinalities of $hA$.
We study the image of a generalized Dedekind sum relating to the weight zero Eisenstein series $E_{χ_1,χ_2}$. We show that the image is a lattice of full rank inside a number field determined by the characters $χ_1$ and $χ_2$. We also give a generalization of Knopp's identity for the classical Dedekind sum.
Inverse determinant sums appear naturally as a tool for analyzing performance of space-time codes in Rayleigh fading channels. This work will analyze the growth of inverse determinant sums of a family of quasi-orthogonal codes and will show that the growths are in logarithmic class. This is considerably lower than that of comparable number field codes.
Interpolated multiple zeta values can be regarded as interpolation polynomials of multiple zeta values and multiple zeta-star values. In this paper, we give some algebraic relations of interpolated multiple zeta values, such as the symmetric sum formula, the shuffle regularized sum formula, a weighted sum formula and some evaluation formulas with even arguments. All the algebraic relations provided in this paper are deduced from the extended double shuffle relations.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Its existence is equivalent to the existence of a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals. Finding such a cuboid or proving its non-existence is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, the equations of a perfect cuboid were transformed to factor equations. The factor equations turned out to be solvable and, being solved, have led to a pair of inverse problems. Our efforts in the present paper are …
Gross and Smith have put forward generalizations of Hardy - Littlewood twin prime conjectures for algebraic number fields. We estimate the behavior of sums of a singular series that arises in these conjectures, up to lower order terms. More exactly, we find asymptotic formulas for smoothed sums of the singular series minus one. Based upon Gross and Smith's conjectures, we use our result to suggest that for large enough 'short intervals' in an algebraic number field K, the variance of counts of prime elements in a random short interval deviates from a Cramer model prediction by a universal fact…
We discuss a possible generalisation of a conjecture of Bley, Burns and Hahn concerning the relation between the second Adams-operator twisted Galois-Gauss sums of weakly ramified Artin characters and the square root of the inverse different of finite, odd degree, Galois extensions of number fields, to the setting of all finite Galois extensions of number fields for which a square root of the inverse different exists. We also extend the key methods and results of Bley, Burns and Hahn to this more general setting and, by combining these methods with a recent result of Agboola, Burns, Caputo and…
This work concentrates on the study of inverse determinant sums, which arise from the union bound on the error probability, as a tool for designing and analyzing algebraic space-time block codes. A general framework to study these sums is established, and the connection between asymptotic growth of inverse determinant sums and the diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off is investigated. It is proven that the growth of the inverse determinant sum of a division algebra-based space-time code is completely determined by the growth of the unit group. This reduces the inverse determinant sum analysis …
In a one-page fragment published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated two double series identities associated, respectively, with the famous Gauss Circle and Dirichlet Divisor problems. The identities contain an "extra" parameter, and it is possible that Ramanujan derived these identities with the intent of attacking these famous problems. Similar famous unsolved problems are connected with $f_K(n)$, the number of integral ideals of norm $n$ in an algebraic number field $K$. In this paper we establish Riesz sum identities containing an "extra" parameter and involving $f_K(n)$, or divisor f…
Let $A$ be a subset of a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. When $\mathbb{F}$ has prime order, we show that there is an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that, if $A$ is both sum-free and equal to the set of its multiplicative inverses, then $|A| < (0.25 - c)|\mathbb{F}| + o(|\mathbb{F}|)$ as $|\mathbb{F}| \rightarrow \infty$. We contrast this with the result that such sets exist with size at least $0.25|\mathbb{F}| - o(|\mathbb{F}|)$ when $\mathbb{F}$ has characteristic $2$.
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group and $h$ be a positive integer. For a nonempty finite subset $A=\{a_0, a_1,\ldots, a_{k-1}\}$ of $G$, we let \[h_{\underline{+}}A:=\{Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}λ_{i} a_{i}: (λ_{0}, \ldots, λ_{k-1}) \in \mathbb{Z}^{k},~ Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}|λ_{i}|=h \},\] be the {\it signed sumset} of $A$. The {\it direct problem} for the signed sumset $h_{\underline{+}}A$ is to find a nontrivial lower bound for $|h_{\underline{+}}A|$ in terms of $|A|$. The {\it inverse problem} for $h_{\underline{+}}A$ is to determine the structure of the finite set $A$ for which $|h_{\underline{+}}A|$ is minima…
If $α_1,\ldots,α_r$ are algebraic numbers such that $$N=\sum_{i=1}^rα_i \ne \sum_{i=1}^rα_i^{-1}$$ for some integer $N$, then a theorem of Beukers and Zagier gives the best possible lower bound on $$\sum_{i=1}^r\log h(α_i)$$ where $h$ denotes the Weil Height. We will extend this result to allow $N$ to be any totally real algebraic number. Our generalization includes a consequence of a theorem of Schinzel which bounds the height of a totally real algebraic integer.
The maximal degree over rational numbers that an n-dimensinonal Kloosterman sum defined over a finite field of characteristic p can achieve is known to be (p-1)/d where d=gcd(p-1,n+1). Wan has shown that this maximal degree is always achieved in points whose absolute trace is nonzero. By the works of Fischer, Wan we know that there exist many finite fields for which the values of the Kloosterman sums are distinct except Frobenius conjugation. For these fields we completely determine the degrees of all the Kloosterman sums. Even if the finite field does not satisfy this condition we can still o…
We use recent results about linking the number of zeros on algebraic varieties over $\mathbb{C}$, defined by polynomials with integer coefficients, and on their reductions modulo sufficiently large primes to study congruences with products and reciprocals of linear forms. This allows us to make some progress towards a question of B. Murphy, G. Petridis, O. Roche-Newton, M. Rudnev and I. D. Shkredov (2019) on an extreme case of the Erdős-Szemerédi conjecture in finite fields.
Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group. A sequence over $G$ is called a minimal zero-sum sequence if the sum of its terms is zero and no proper subsequence has this property. Davenport's constant of $G$ is the maximum of the lengths of the minimal zero-sum sequences over $G$. Its value is well-known for groups of rank two. We investigate the structure of minimal zero-sum sequences of maximal length for groups of rank two. Assuming a well-supported conjecture on this problem for groups of the form $C_m \oplus C_m$, we determine the structure of these sequences for groups of rank two. Combi…
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. Let $A=\{a_{0}, a_{1},\ldots, a_{k-1}\}$ be a nonempty finite subset of $G$. For a positive integer $h$ satisfying $1\leq h\leq k$, we let \[h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A:=\{Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}λ_{i} a_{i}: (λ_{0},λ_{1}, \ldots, λ_{k-1}) \in \{-1,0,1\}^{k},~Σ_{i=0}^{k-1}|λ_{i}|=h \},\] be the restricted signed sumset of $A$. The direct problem for the restricted signed sumset $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ is to find the minimum number of elements in $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ in terms of $|A|$. The inverse problem for $h\hat{}_{\underline{+}}A$ is to determine the struct…
Let $1<q<2$ and \[ Λ(q)={\sum_{k=0}^n a_kq^k\mid a_k\in\{-1,0,1\}, n\ge1}. \] It is well known that if $q$ is not a root of a polynomial with coefficients $0,\pm1$, then $Λ(q)$ is dense in $\mathbb{R}$. We give several sufficient conditions for the denseness of $Λ(q)$ when $q$ is a root of such a polynomial. In particular, we prove that if $q$ is not a Perron number or it has a conjugate $α$ such that $q|α|<1$, then $Λ(q)$ is dense in $\mathbb{R}$.
The Davenport constant for a finite abelian group $G$ is the minimal length $\ell$ such that any sequence of $\ell$ terms from $G$ must contain a nontrivial zero-sum sequence. For the group $G=(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^2$, its value is $2n-1$, which is a classical result of Olson. The associated inverse question is to characterize those sequences of maximal length $2n-2$ that do not have a nontrivial zero-sum subsequence. A simple argument shows this to be equivalent to characterizing all minimal zero-sum sequences of maximal length $2n-1$, with a minimal zero-sum sequence being one that cannot h…
We study arithmetic distribution relations and the inverse function theorem in algebraic and arithmetic geometry, with an emphasis on versions that can be applied uniformly across families of varieties and maps. In particular, we prove two explicit versions of the inverse function theorem, the first via general distribution and separation inequalities that may be of independent interest, the second via a careful implementation of classical Newton iteration.
