The relationship between quantum phase transition and complex geometric phase for open quantum system governed by the non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian with the accidental crossing of the eigenvalues is established. In particular, the geometric phase associated with the ground state of the one-dimensional dissipative Ising model in a transverse magnetic field is evaluated, and it is demonstrated that related quantum phase transition is of the first order.
We extend the quantum geometric tensor from the state space to the operator level, and investigate its properties like the additivity for factorizable models and the splitting of two kinds contributions for the case of stationary reference states. This operator-quantum-geometric tensor (OQGT) is shown to reflect the sensitivity of unitary operations against perturbations of multi parameters. General results for the cases of time evolutions with given stationary reference states are obtained. By this approach, we get exact results for the rotated XY models, and show relations between the OQGT an…
In this letter, we elaborate on the identification and construction of the differential geometric elements underlying Berry's phase. Berry bundles are built generally from the physical data of the quantum system under study. We apply this construction to typical and recently investigated systems presenting Berry's phase to explore their geometric features.
Geometric phase has found a broad spectrum of applications in both classical and quantum physics, such as condensed matter and quantum computation. In this paper we introduce an operational geometric phase for mixed quantum states, based on spectral weighted traces of holonomies, and we prove that it generalizes the standard definition of geometric phase for mixed states, which is based on quantum interferometry. We also introduce higher order geometric phases, and prove that under a fairly weak, generically satisfied, requirement, there is always a well-defined geometric phase of some order. …
We show the explicit expression of the geometric phase for $n$-partite Gaussian states. In our analysis, the covariance matrix can be obtained as a boundary term of the geometric phase.
Geometric measure of entanglement and geometric phase have recently been used to analyze quantum phase transition in the XY spin chain. We unify these two approaches by showing that the geometric entanglement and the geometric phase are respectively the real and imaginary parts of a complex-valued geometric entanglement, which can be investigated in typical quantum interferometry experiments. We argue that the singular behavior of the complex-value geometric entanglement at a quantum critical point is a characteristic of any quantum phase transition, by showing that the underlying mechanism is…
The relation between the geometric phase and quantum phase transition has been discussed in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Our calculation shows the ability of geometric phase of the ground state to mark quantum phase transition in this model. The possibility of the geometric phase or its derivatives as the universal order parameter of characterizing quantum phase transitions has been also discussed.
In this article, we provide theoretical support for the use of geometric measures of nonclassicality as a general tool to identify quantum phase transitions. We argue that divergences in the susceptibility of any geometric measure of nonclassicality are sufficient conditions to identify phase transitions at arbitrary temperature. This establishes that geometric measures of nonclassicality, in any quantum resource theory, are generic tools to investigate phase transitions in quantum systems. At zero temperature, we show that geometric measures of quantum coherence are especially useful for iden…
By extending the quantum evolution of a scalar field in time-dependent backgrounds to the complex-time plane and transporting the in-vacuum along a closed path, we argue that the geometric transition from the simple pole at infinity determines the multi-pair production depending on the winding number. We apply the geometric transition to Schwinger mechanism in the time-dependent vector potential for a constant electric field and to Gibbons-Hawking particle production in the planar coordinates of a de Sitter space.
The connection between the geometric phase and quantum phase transition has been discussed extensively in the two-band model. By introducing the twist operator, the geometric phase can be defined by calculating its ground-state expectation value. In contrast to the previous numerical examinations, our discussion presents an exact calculation for the determination of the geometric phase. Through two representative examples, our calculation shows the intimate connection between the geometric phase and phase transition: different behaviors of the geometric phase can be identified in this paper, w…
The geometric phase associated with a many body ground state exhibits a signature of quantum phase transition. In this context, we have studied the behaviour of the geometric phase during a linear quench caused by a gradual turning off of the magnetic field interacting with a spin chain.
We use the theory of dynamical invariants to yield a simple derivation of noncyclic analogues of the Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases. This derivation relies only on the principle of gauge invariance and elucidates the existing definitions of the Abelian noncyclic geometric phase. We also discuss the adiabatic limit of the noncyclic geometric phase and compute the adiabatic non-Abelian noncyclic geometric phase for a spin 1 magnetic (or electric) quadrupole interacting with a precessing magnetic (electric) field.
We propose a geometric phase gate of two ion qubits that are encoded in two levels linked by an optical dipole-forbidden transition. Compared to hyperfine geometric phase gates mediated by electric dipole transitions, the gate has many interesting properties, such as very low spontaneous emission rates, applicability to magnetic field insensitive states, and use of a co-propagating laser beam geometry. We estimate that current technology allows for infidelities of around 10$^{-4}$.
Quantum phase transition is one of the main interests in the field of condensed matter physics, while geometric phase is a fundamental concept and has attracted considerable interest in the field of quantum mechanics. However, no relevant relation was recognized before recent work. In this paper, we present a review of the connection recently established between these two interesting fields: investigations in the geometric phase of the many-body systems have revealed so-called "criticality of geometric phase", in which geometric phase associated with the many-body ground state exhibits univers…
A periodic perturbation such as a laser field cannot induce transitions between two decoupled states for which the transition matrix element vanishes. We show, however, that if in addition some system parameters are varied adiabatically, such transitions become possible via adiabatic-change-induced excitations to other states. We demonstrate that full amplitude transfer between the two decoupled states can be achieved, and more significantly, the evolution of the system only depends on its path in parameter space. Our technique then provides a valuable means of studying nontrivial geometrical …
We address the development of geometric phases in classical and quantum magnetic moments (spin-1/2) precessing in an external magnetic field. We show that nonadiabatic dynamics lead to a topological phase transition determined by a change in the driving field topology. The transition is associated with an effective geometric phase which is identified from the paths of the magnetic moments in a spherical geometry. The topological transition presents close similarities between SO(3) and SU(2) cases but features differences in, e.g., the adiabatic limits of the geometric phases, being $2π$ and $π…
We show that geometric phase of the ground state in the XY model obeys scaling behavior in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition. In particular we find that geometric phase is non-analytical and its derivative with respect to the field strength diverges at the critical magnetic field. Furthermore, universality in the critical properties of the geometric phase in a family of models is verified. In addition, since quantum phase transition occurs at a level crossing or avoided level crossing and these level structures can be captured by Berry curvature, the established relation between geome…
Nodal free geometric phases are the eigenvalues of the final member of a parallel transporting family of unitary operators. These phases are gauge invariant, always well-defined, and can be measured interferometrically. Nodal free geometric phases can be used to construct various types of quantum phase gates.
On the basis of the principle that topological quantum phases arise from the scattering around space-time defects in higher dimensional unification, a geometric model is presented that associates with each quantum phase an element of a transformation group.
We show that neutrino spin and spin-flavor transitions involve nonvanishing geometric phases. The geometric character of neutrino spin rotation is explored by studying the neutrino spin trajectory in the projective Hilbert space representation and its relation to the geometric phase. Analytical expressions are derived for noncyclic geometric phases. Several calculations are performed for different cases of rotating and nonrotating magnetic fields in the context of solar neutrinos and neutrinos produced inside neutron stars. Also the effects of adiabaticity, critical magnetic fields and cross b…
In this letter, the generalization of geometric phase in density matrix is presented, we show that the extended sub-geometric phase have unified expression whatever in adiabatic or nonadiabatic procedure, the relations between them and the usual Berry phase or Aharonov-Anandan phase are established. We also demonstrated the influence of sub-geometric phases on the physical observables. Finally, our treatment is naturally used to investigate the geometric phase in mixed state.
Abelian and Non-Abelian evolution of a quantum system manifests differently in the geometric phase acquired by the system under such evolutions. In this work we develop and study, using dressed state techniques, an experimentally realizable spin system which allows us to transit smoothly from non-Abelian to Abelian evolutions by changing externally controllable parameters. The study provides insights into the underlying physical phenomenon governing such a transition allowing us greater control on phase generation in a quantum system. The robustness of geometric phase against fluctuations of t…
In this paper, we generalize the results of S. Oh (Physics Letters A. 644-647 \textbf{373 }) to Dzyaloshinski-Moriya model under nonuniform external magnetic field to investigate the relation between entanglement, geometric phase (or Berry phase) and quantum phase transition. We use quaternionic representation to relate the geometric phase to the quantum phase transition. For small values of DM parameter, the Berry phase is more appropriate than the concurrence measure, while for large values, the concurrence is a good indicator to show the phase transition. On the other hand, by increasing th…
By viewing entanglement as a state function, a new kind of phase transition takes place: the geometric phase transition. This phenomenon occurs due to singularities in the shape of the entangled states set. It is shown how this result can be carried to provide a better understanding of the geometry of entanglement. Surprisingly, this study can be done experimentally, what allows to determine the shape of different entangled states sets, a purely mathematical definition, in real experiments.
By example of the nonlinear Kerr-mode driven by a laser, we show that hysteresis phenomena in systems featuring a driven-dissipative phase transition (DPT) can be accurately described in terms of just two collective, dissipative Liouvillian eigenmodes. The key quantities are just two components of a nonabelian geometric connection, even though a single parameter is driven. This powerful geometric approach considerably simplifies the description of driven-dissipative phase transitions, extending the range of computationally accessible parameter regimes, and providing a new starting point for bo…
Beyond the quantum Markov approximation, we calculate the geometric phase of a two-level system driven by a quantized magnetic field subject to phase dephasing. The phase reduces to the standard geometric phase in the weak coupling limit and it involves the phase information of the environment in general. In contrast with the geometric phase in dissipative systems, the geometric phase acquired by the system can be observed on a long time scale. We also show that with the system decohering to its pointer states, the geometric phase factor tends to a sum over the phase factors pertaining to the …
We explore geometric phases of coherent states and some of their properties. A better and elegant expression of geometric phase for coherent state is derived. It is used to obtain the explicit form of the geometric phase for entangled coherent states, several interesting results followed by considering different cases for the parameters. The effects of entanglement and harmonic potential on the geometric phase are discussed.
We show that the geometric phase of Levy-Leblond arises from a low of parallel transport for wave functions and point out that this phase belongs to a new class of geometric phases due to the presence of a quantum potential.
The geometric phase of a bi-particle model is discussed. For different initial states, especially when the initial state is pure or mixed, the geometric phase will show different properties. The relationship between the geometric phase and the entanglement or mixedness of the initial state is considered.
We study the geometric phase of a two-level atom coupled to an environment with Lorentzian spectral density. The non-Markovian effect on the geometric phase is explored analytically and numerically. In the weak coupling limit the lowest-order correction to the geometric phase is derived analytically and the general case is calculated numerically. It is found that the correction to the geometric phase is significantly large if the spectral width is small and in this case the non-Markovian dynamics has a significant impact to the geometric phase. When the spectral width increases, the correction…
Topological phases of matter became a new standard to classify quantum systems in many cases, yet key quantities like the quantum geometric tensor providing local information about topological properties are still experimentally hard to access. In non-Abelian systems this accessibility to geometric properties can be even more restrictive due to the degeneracy of the states. We propose universal protocols to determine quantum geometric properties in non-Abelian systems. First, we show that for a weak resonant driving of the local parameters the coherent Rabi oscillations are related to the quan…
In this paper, the off-diagonal geometric phase of thermal state in hydrogen atom under the effects of external magnetic field is considered. Increasing temperature tends to suppress the off-diagonal geometric phase, including 1-order and 2-order cases. On the other hand, the relationship between the geometric phase and external magnetic field is discussed.
A general scheme for an adiabatic geometric phase gate is proposed which is maximally robust against parameter fluctuations. While in systems with SU(2) symmetry geometric phases are usually accompanied by dynamical phases and are thus not robust, we show that in the more general case of a SU(2) x SU(2) symmetry it is possible to obtain a non-vanishing geometric phase without dynamical contributions. The scheme is illustrated for a phase gate using two systems with dipole-dipole interactions in external laser fields which form an effective four-level system.
The notion of geometric phase has been recently introduced to analyze the quantum phase transitions of many-body systems from the geometrical perspective. In this work, we study the geometric phase of the ground state for an inhomogeneous period-two anisotropic XY model in a transverse field. This model encompasses a group of familiar spin models as its special cases and shows a richer critical behavior. The exact solution is obtained by mapping on a fermionic system through the Jordan-Wigner transformation and constructing the relevant canonical transformation to realize the diagonalization o…
All the geometric phases, adiabatic and non-adiabatic, are formulated in a unified manner in the second quantized path integral formulation. The exact hidden local symmetry inherent in the Schrödinger equation defines the holonomy. All the geometric phases are shown to be topologically trivial. The geometric phases are briefly compared to the chiral anomaly which is naturally formulated in the path integral.
We consider stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) processes in tripod systems and show how to generate purely geometric phase changes of the quantum states involved. The geometric phases are controlled by three laser fields where pulse shapes, relative field strength and phases can be controlled. We present a robust set of universal gates for quantum computing based on these geometric phases: a one-qubit phase gate, a Hadamard gate and a two-qubit phase gate.
We study the quantum phases of anisotropic XY spin chain system in presence and absence of adiabatic quench. A connection between geometric phase and criticality is established from the dynamical behaviour of the geometric phase for a quench induced quantum phase transition in a quantum spin chain. We predict XX criticality associated with a sequence of non-contractible geometric phases.
The concept of relative state is used to introduce geometric phases that originate from correlations in states of composite quantum systems. In particular, we identify an entanglement-induced geometric phase in terms of a weighted average of geometric phase factors associated with a decomposition that define the entanglement of formation. An explicit procedure to calculate the entanglement-induced geometric phase for qubit pairs is put forward. We illustrate it for maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) of two qubits.
Squeezing ensemble of spins provides a way to surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) in quantum metrology and test the fundamental physics as well, and therefore attracts broad interest. Here we propose an experimentally accessible protocol to squeeze a giant ensemble of spins via the geometric phase control. Using the cavity-assisted Raman transitions in a double $Λ$-type system, we realize an effective Dicke model. Under the condition of vanishing effective spin transition frequency, we find a particular evolution time where the cavity decouples from the spins and the spin ensemble is sque…
We show that the geometric phase between any two states, including orthogonal states, can be computed and measured using the notion of projective measurement, and we show that a topological number can be extracted in the geometric phase change in an infinitesimal loop near an orthogonal state. Also, the Pancharatnam phase change during the passage through an orthogonal state is shown to be either $π$ or zero (mod $2π$). All the off-diagonal geometric phases can be obtained from the projective geometric phase calculated with our generalized connection.
Nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces has received increasing attention due to the merits of its high-speed implementation and robustness against both control errors and decoherence. However, all the previous schemes in this direction have been based on the conventional geometric phases, of which the dynamical phases need to be removed. In this paper, we put forward a scheme of nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces based on unconventional geometric phases, of which the dynamical phases do not need to be removed. Specifically…
We obtain the ground-state energy level and associated geometric phase in the Dicke model analytically by means of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the boson expansion approach in the thermodynamic limit. The non-adiabatic geometric phase induced by the photon field is derived with the time-dependent unitary transformation. It is shown that the quantum phase transition characterized by the non-analyticity of the geometric phase is remarkably of the first-order. We also investigate the scaling behavior of the geometric phase at the critical point, which can be measured in a practical e…
We examine the effect of spin-orbit coupling on geometric phases in hydrogenlike atoms exposed to a slowly varying magnetic field. The marginal geometric phases associated with the orbital angular momentum and the intrinsic spin fulfill a sum rule that explicitly relates them to the corresponding geometric phase of the whole system. The marginal geometric phases in the Zeeman and Paschen-Back limit are analyzed. We point out the existence of nodal points in the marginal phases that may be detected by topological means.
Time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy is currently exploited as a powerful technique to probe spin dynamics in semiconductors. We propose here an all-optical approach to geometrically manipulate electron spin and to detect the geometric phase by this type of extremely sensitive experiment. The global nature of the geometric phase can make the quantum manipulation more stable, which may find interesting application in quantum devices.
We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density, and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, geometric phase has a $π$-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without RWA given by hierarchy equation of motion method shows that there is no such a phase jump or nodal structure in geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counter-rotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in multi-mode Hamiltonian under certain c…
Geometric phase has been proposed as one of the promising methodologies to perform fault tolerant quantum computations. However, since decoherence plays a crucial role in such studies, understanding of mixed state geometric phase has become important. While mixed state geometric phase was first introduced mathematically by Uhlmann, recently Sjoqvist et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85(14), 2845 (2000)] have described the mixed state geometric phase in the context of quantum interference and shown theoretically that the visibility as well as the shift of the interference pattern are functions of geomet…
In this article we provide a review of geometrical methods employed in the analysis of quantum phase transitions and non-equilibrium dissipative phase transitions. After a pedagogical introduction to geometric phases and geometric information in the characterisation of quantum phase transitions, we describe recent developments of geometrical approaches based on mixed-state generalisation of the Berry-phase, i.e. the Uhlmann geometric phase, for the investigation of non-equilibrium steady-state quantum phase transitions (NESS-QPTs ). Equilibrium phase transitions fall invariably into two marked…
In this paper, the geometric phase of thermal state in hydrogen atom under the effects of external magnetic field is considered. Especially the effects of the temperature upon the geometric phase is discussed. Also we discuss the time evolution of entanglement of the system. They show some similar behaviors.
The properties of the geometric phases between three quantum states are investigated in a high-dimensional Hilbert space using the Majorana representation of symmetric quantum states. We found that the geometric phases between the three quantum states in an N-state quantum system can be represented by N-1 spherical triangles on the Bloch sphere. The parameter dependence of the geometric phase was analyzed based on this picture. We found that the geometric phase exhibits rich nonlinear behavior in a high-dimensional Hilbert space.
The geometric phases of cyclic evolutions for mixed states are discussed in the framework of unitary evolution. A canonical one-form is defined whose line integral gives the geometric phase which is gauge invariant. It reduces to the Aharonov and Anandan phase in the pure state case. Our definition is consistent with the phase shift in the proposed experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{85}, 2845 (2000)] for a cyclic evolution if the unitary transformation satisfies the parallel transport condition. A comprehensive geometric interpretation is also given. It shows that the geometric phases for mi…
Geometric phases have been shown to be feasible in implementing quantum gates to perform quantum information processing. For all the realistic applications, the environmental influence on the geometric phase and decoherence such as memory effects must be properly considered in order to achieve the required precision in geometric quantum computation. In this paper, we study the geometric phase for a generic open quantum system based on a microscopic model. A remarkable feature of the open system's geometric phase obtained from our theoretical formulation is that the geometric phase can be obtai…
The relation between quantum phase transitions, entanglement, and geometric phases is investigated with a system of two qubits with XY type interaction. A seam of level crossings of the system is a circle in parameter space of the anisotropic coupling and the transverse magnetic field, which is identical to the disorder line of an one-dimensional XY model. The entanglement of the ground state changes abruptly as the parameters vary across the circle except specific points crossing to the straight line of the zero magnetic field. At those points the entanglement does not change but the ground s…
The influence of intersubsystem coupling on the cyclic adiabatic geometric phase in bipartite systems is investigated. We examine the geometric phase effects for two uniaxially coupled spin$-{1/2}$ particles, both driven by a slowly rotating magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the relation between the geometric phase and the solid angle enclosed by the magnetic field is broken by the spin-spin coupling, in particular leading to a quenching effect on the geometric phase in the strong coupling limit.
Everett's concept of relative state is used to introduce a geometric phase that depends nontrivially on entanglement in a pure quantum state. We show that this phase can be measured in multiparticle interferometry. A correlation-dependent generalization of the relative state geometric phase to mixed quantum states is outlined.
