We examine the effect of spin-orbit coupling on geometric phases in hydrogenlike atoms exposed to a slowly varying magnetic field. The marginal geometric phases associated with the orbital angular momentum and the intrinsic spin fulfill a sum rule that explicitly relates them to the corresponding geometric phase of the whole system. The marginal geometric phases in the Zeeman and Paschen-Back limit are analyzed. We point out the existence of nodal points in the marginal phases that may be detected by topological means.
We study how two fully-featured hydrogenlike atoms harvest entanglement from the electromagnetic field vacuum, even when the atoms are spacelike separated. We compare the electromagnetic case ---qualitatively and quantitatively--- with previous results that used scalar fields and featureless, idealized atomic models. Our study reveals the new traits that emerge when we relax these idealizations, such as anisotropies in entanglement harvesting and the effect of exchange of angular momentum. We show that, under certain circumstances, relaxing previous idealizations makes vacuum entanglement harv…
We show that the twisted photon states, or photon states with large ($> \hbar$) angular momentum projection ($m_γ$) in the direction of motion, can photoexcite atomic levels for a hydrogen-like atom that are novel and distinct and are not restricted by $m_γ$, when the symmetry axis of the twisted-photon beam does not coincide with the center of the atomic target. Selection rules are given and interesting implications and observables for the above process are pointed out.
The Lamb Shift (LS) of Hydrogenlike atom is evaluated by a simple method of quantum electrodynamics in noncovariant form, based on the relativistic stationary Schrödinger equation. An induced term proportional to $\overrightarrow{p}^4$ in the effective Hamiltonian is emphasized. Perturbative calculation of second order leads to the LS of $ 1S_{1/2}$ state and that of $2S_{1/2}-2P_{1/2}$ states in H atom with the high accuracy within 0.1%
We study the dynamics of the non-classical correlations for few atom systems in the presence of strong interactions for a number of recently developed adiabatic state preparation protocols. We show that entanglement can be created in a controlled fashion and can be attributed to two distinct sources, the atom-atom interaction and the distribution of atoms among different traps.
We propose a robust scheme to prepare three-dimensional entanglement states between a single atom and a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) techniques. The atomic spontaneous radiation, the cavity decay, and the fiber loss are efficiently suppressed by the engineering adiabatic passage. Our scheme is also robust to the variation of atom number in the BEC.
We propose a method to transfer the population and control the state of two-level and three-level atoms speeding-up Adiabatic Passage techniques while keeping their robustness versus parameter variations. The method is based on supplementing the standard laser beam setup of Adiabatic Passage methods with auxiliary steering laser pulses of orthogonal polarization. This provides a shortcut to adiabaticity driving the system along the adiabatic path defined by the standard setup.
We present a general formalism for describing stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a multi-level atom. The atom is assumed to have two ground state manifolds a and b and an excited state manifold e, and the adiabatic passage is carried out by resonantly driving the a-e and b-e transitions with time-dependent fields. Our formalism gives a complete description of the adiabatic passage process, and can be applied to systems with arbitrary numbers of degenerate states in each manifold and arbitrary couplings of the a-e and b-e transitions. We illustrate the formalism by applying it to both a simp…
We propose a relatively robust scheme to generate maximally entangled states of (i) an atom and a cavity photon, (ii) two atoms in their ground states, and (iii) two photons in two spatially separate high-Q cavities. It is based on the interaction via fractional adiabatic passage of a three-level atom traveling through a cavity mode and a laser beam. The presence of optical phases is emphasized.
We investigate the geometric phase of an atom inside an adiabatic radio frequency (rf) potential created from a static magnetic field (B-field) and a time dependent rf field. The spatial motion of the atomic center of mass is shown to give rise to a geometric phase, or Berry's phase, to the adiabatically evolving atomic hyperfine spin along the local B-field. This phase is found to depend on both the static B-field along the semi-classical trajectory of the atomic center of mass and an ``effective magnetic field'' of the total B-field, including the oscillating rf field. Specific calculations …
We propose two robust schemes to generate controllable (deterministic) atomic W-states of three three-level atoms interacting with an optical cavity and a laser beam. Losses due to atomic spontaneous emissions and to cavity decay are efficiently suppressed by employing adiabatic passage technique and appropriately designed atom-field couplings. In these schemes the three atoms traverse the cavity-mode and the laser beam and become entangled in the free space outside the cavity.
We examine and explain the stability properties of the ``atom diode'', a laser device that lets the ground state atom pass in one direction but not in the opposite direction. The diodic behavior and the variants that result by using different laser configurations may be understood with an adiabatic approximation. The conditions to break down the approximation, which imply also the diode failure, are analyzed.
We study the dynamics of a pair of atoms, resonantly interacting with a single mode cavity, in the situation where the atoms enter the cavity with a time delay between them. Using time dependent coupling functions to represent the spatial profile of the mode, we considered the adiabatic limit of the system. Although the time evolution is mostly adiabatic, energy crossings play an important role in the system dynamics. Following from this, entanglement, and a procedure for cavity state teleportation are considered. We examine the behaviour of the system when we introduce decoherence, a finite d…
We use microwave induced adiabatic passages for selective spin flips within a string of optically trapped individual neutral Cs atoms. We position-dependently shift the atomic transition frequency with a magnetic field gradient. To flip the spin of a selected atom, we optically measure its position and sweep the microwave frequency across its respective resonance frequency. We analyze the addressing resolution and the experimental robustness of this scheme. Furthermore, we show that adiabatic spin flips can also be induced with a fixed microwave frequency by deterministically transporting the …
In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme to drive three atoms in an optical cavity into a singlet state via adiabatic passage. Appropriate Rabi frequencies of the classical fields are selected to realize the present scheme. The scheme is robust against deviations in the pulse delay and laser intensity through some simple analysis of the adiabatic condition. It is notable that the estimated range of the effective adiabaticity condition coincides with the numerical results. When taking dissipation into account, we show that the process is immune to atomic spontaneous emission as the atomic …
In this paper, we study the suppression of adiabatic decoherence in a three-level atom with $Λ$ configuration using bang-bang control technique. We have given the decoupling bang-bang operation group, and programmed a sequence of periodic radio frequency twinborn pulses to realize the control process. Moreover, we have studied the process with non-ideal situation and established the condition for efficient suppression of adiabatic decoherence.
We propose a scheme for generating atomic NOON states via adiabatic passage. In the scheme, a double $Λ$-type three-level atom is trapped in a bimodal cavity and two sets of $Λ$-type three-level atoms are translated into and outside of two single mode cavities respectively. The three cavities connected by optical fibres are always in vacuum states. After a series of operations and suitable interaction time, we can obtain arbitrary large-$n$ NOON states of two sets of $Λ$-type three-level atoms in distant cavities by performing a single projective measurement on the double $Λ$-type three-level …
Shortcuts to adiabaticity have been proposed to speed up the "slow" adiabatic transport of an atom or a wave packet of atoms. However, the freedom of the inverse engineering approach with appropriate boundary conditions provides thousands of trap trajectories for different purposes, for example, time and energy minimizations. In this paper, we propose trigonometric protocols for fast and robust atomic transport, taking into account cubic or quartic anharmonicities. The numerical results have illustrated that such trigonometric protocols, particular cosine ansatz, is more robust and the corresp…
We propose to apply stimulated adiabatic passage to transfer atoms from their ground state into Rydberg excited states. Atoms a few micrometers apart experience a dipole-dipole interaction among Rydberg states that is strong enough to shift the atomic resonance and inhibit excitation of more than a single atom. We show that the adiabatic passage in the presence of this interaction between two atoms leads to robust creation of maximally entangled states and to two-bit quantum gates. For many atoms, the excitation blockade leads to an effective implementation of collective-spin and Jaynes-Cummin…
A physical implementation of the adiabatic Grover search is theoretically investigated in a system of N identical three-level atoms trapped in a single mode cavity. Some of the atoms are marked through the presence of an energy gap between their two ground states. The search is controlled by two partially delayed lasers which allow a deterministic adiabatic transfer from an initially entangled state to the marked states. Pulse schemes are proposed to satisfy the Grover speedup either exactly or approximately, and the success rate of the search is calculated.
We propose a robust and decoherence insensitive scheme to generate controllable entangled states of two three-level atoms interacting with an optical cavity and a laser beam. Losses due to atomic spontaneous transitions and to cavity decay are efficiently suppressed by employing fractional adiabatic passage and appropriately designed atom-field couplings. In this scheme the two atoms traverse the cavity-mode and the laser beam in opposite directions as opposed to other entanglement schemes in which the atoms are required to have fixed locations inside a cavity. We also show that the coherence …
We propose a robust scheme to generate single-photon Fock states and atom-photon and atom-atom entanglement in atom-cavity systems. We also present a scheme for quantum networking between two cavity nodes using an atomic channel. The mechanism is based on Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) and half-SCRAP processes in a microwave cavity. The engineering of these states depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through the static and dynamic Stark shifts.
We propose an implementation of the quantum search algorithm of a marked item in an unsorted list of N items by adiabatic passage in a cavity-laser-atom system. We use an ensemble of N identical three-level atoms trapped in a single-mode cavity and driven by two lasers. In each atom, the same level represents a database entry. One of the atoms is marked by having an energy gap between its two ground states. Appropriate time delays between the two laser pulses allow one to populate the marked state starting from an initial entangled state within a decoherence-free adiabatic subspace. The time t…
Recently, a new method, which can significantly speed up adiabatic quantum state transfer by using dressed states, was proposed by Baksic \emph{et~al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{116}, 230503 (2016)]. Assisted by quantum Zeno dynamics, we develop this dressed-state method to achieve shortcuts to complete and fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for speeding up adiabatic two-atom quantum state transfer and maximum entanglement generation, respectively. By means of some numerical simulations, we determine the parameters used in the scheme which can guarantee the feasibility and efficienc…
Entanglement distribution between trapped-atom quantum memories, viz. single atoms in optical cavities, is addressed. In most scenarios, the rate of entanglement distribution depends on the efficiency with which the state of traveling single photons can be transferred to trapped atoms. This loading efficiency is analytically studied for two-level, $V$-level, $Λ$-level, and double-$Λ$-level atomic configurations by means of a system-reservoir approach. An off-resonant non-adiabatic approach to loading $Λ$-level trapped-atom memories is proposed, and the ensuing trade-offs between the atom-light…
We study the adiabatic limit for the sequential passage of atoms through a high-Q cavity, in the presence of frequency chirps. Despite the fact that the adiabatic approximation might be expected to fail, we were able to show that for proper choice of Stark-pulses this is not the case. Instead, a connection to the resonant limit is established, where the robust creation of entanglement is demonstrated. Recent developments in the fabrication of high-Q cavities allow fidelities for a maximally entangled state up to 97%.
We analyse the problem of a single mode field interacting with a pair of two level atoms. The atoms enter and exit the cavity at different times. Instead of using constant coupling, we use time dependent couplings which represent the spatial dependence of the mode. Although the system evolution is adiabatic for most of the time, a previously unstudied energy crossing plays a key role in the system dynamics when the atoms have a time delay. We show that conditional atom-cavity entanglement can be generated, while for large photon numbers the entangled system has a behaviour which can be mapped …
We propose a scheme for generating three-dimensional entanglement between two atoms trapped in two spatially separated cavities reapectively via shortcuts to adi- abatic passage based on the approach of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quan- tum electronic dynamics. By combining Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants with quantum Zeno dynamics, we can generate three dimensional entanglement of the two atoms with high fidelity. The Numerical simulation results show that the scheme is ro- bust against the decoherences caused by the photon leakage and atomic spontaneous emission.
We, based on the photoassociation of fermion atoms into bosonic molecules, propose a scheme to create the steady entanglement between the atom state and the molecule state inside an optical lattice. The stability of entanglement state is guaranteed by sweeping the frequency of Ramman laser beam through resonance according to the second Demkov-Kunike (DK2) nonadiabatic transition model\cite{DK,models}. The probability amplitude of each components can be precisely controlled by adjusting the sweeping parameter.
We propose schemes of controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates with ultracold neutral atoms based on deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage of the Stark-tuned Förster resonance of Rydberg states. The effect of deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage in a two-level quantum system has been analyzed in detail. Adiabatic rapid passage using nonlinearly chirped pulses with rectangle intensity profile has been discussed. Nonlinear time dependence of the energy detuning from the Förster resonance is used to achieve a high fidelity of population transfer…
We study a scheme for implementing a controlled-Z (CZ) gate between two neutral-atom qubits based on the Rydberg blockade mechanism in a manner that is robust to errors caused by atomic motion. By employing adiabatic dressing of the ground electronic state, we can protect the gate from decoherence due to random phase errors that typically arise because of atomic thermal motion. In addition, the adiabatic protocol allows for a Doppler-free configuration that involves counterpropagating lasers in a $σ_+/σ_-$ orthogonal polarization geometry that further reduces motional errors due to Doppler shi…
We show that with adiabatic passage, one can reliably drive two-photon optical transitions between the ground states and interacting Rydberg states in a pair of atoms. For finite Rydberg interaction strengths a new adiabatic pathway towards the doubly Rydberg excited state is identified when a constant detuning is applied with respect to an intermediate optically excited level. The Rydberg interaction among the excited atoms provides a phase that may be used to implement quantum gate operations on atomic ground state qubits.
We theoretically explore photoassociation by Adiabatic Passage of two colliding cold ^{85}Rb atoms in an atomic trap to form an ultracold Rb_2 molecule. We consider the incoherent thermal nature of the scattering process in a trap and show that coherent manipulations of the atomic ensemble, such as adiabatic passage, are feasible if performed within the coherence time window dictated by the temperature, which is relatively long for cold atoms. We show that a sequence of ~2*10^7 pulses of moderate intensities, each lasting ~750 ns, can photoassociate a large fraction of the atomic ensemble at t…
Motivated by transitionless quantum driving, we construct shortcuts to adiabatic passage in a three-atom system to create a singlet state with the help of quantum zeno dynamics and non-resonant lasers. The influence of various decoherence processes is discussed by numerical simulation and the results reveal that the scheme is fast and robust against decoherence and operational imperfection. We also investigate how to select the experimental parameters to control the cavity dissipation and atomic spontaneous emission which will have an application value in experiment.
We propose a scheme to deterministically generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of $N\geq 3$ atoms trapped in spatially separated cavities connected by optical fibers. The scheme is based on the technique of fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage which is one-step in the sense that one needs just wait for the desired entangled state to be generated in the stationary regime. The parametrized shapes of the Rabi frequencies of the classical fields that drive the two end atoms are chosen appropriately to realize the scheme. We also show numerically that the proposed scheme is insensiti…
We propose a single-site addressing implementation based on the sub-wavelength localization via adiabatic passage (SLAP) technique. We consider a sample of ultracold neutral atoms loaded into a two-dimensional optical lattice with one atom per site. Each atom is modeled by a three-level Λ-system in interaction with a pump and a Stokes laser pulse. Using a pump field with a node in its spatial profile, the atoms at all sites are transferred from one ground state of the system to the other via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, except the one at the position of the node that remains in the init…
Entangled states are crucial for modern quantum enabled technology which makes their creation key for future developments. In this paper, a robust quantum control methodology is presented to create entangled states of two typical classes, the W and the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ). It was developed from the analysis of a chain of alkali atoms $^{87}Rb $ interaction with laser pulses, which lead to the two-photon transitions from the ground to the Rydberg states with a predetermined magnetic quantum number. The methodology is based on the mechanism of two-photon adiabatic passage using ove…
We propose an adiabatic passage approach to generate two atoms three- dimensional entanglement with the help of quantum Zeno dynamics in a time- dependent interacting field. The atoms are trapped in two spatially separated cavi- ties connected by a fiber, so that the individual addressing is needless. Because the scheme is based on the resonant interaction, the time required to generate entangle- ment is greatly shortened. Since the fields remain in vacuum state and all the atoms are in the ground states, the losses due to the excitation of photons and the spon- taneous transition of atoms are…
Adiabatic techniques are well known tools in multi-level electron systems to transfer population between different states with high fidelity. Recently it has been realised that these ideas can also be used in ultra-cold atom systems to achieve coherent manipulation of the atomic centre-of-mass states. Here we present an investigation into a realistic setup using three atomic waveguides created on top of an atom chip and show that such systems hold large potential for the observation of adiabatic phenomena in experiments.
We present schemes for geometric phase compensation in adiabatic passage which can be used for the implementation of quantum logic gates with atomic ensembles consisting of an arbitrary number of strongly interacting atoms. Protocols using double sequences of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) or adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses are analyzed. Switching the sign of the detuning between two STIRAP sequences, or inverting the phase between two ARP pulses, provides state transfer with well defined amplitude and phase independent of atom number in the Rydberg blockade regime. Using the…
In this chapter we review the field of radio-frequency dressed atom trapping. We emphasise the role of adiabatic potentials and give simple, but generic models of electromagnetic fields that currently produce traps for atoms at microkelvin temperatures and below. The paper aims to be didactic and starts with general descriptions of the essential ingredients of adiabaticity and magnetic resonance. As examples of adiabatic potentials we pay attention to radio-frequency dressing in both the quadrupole trap and the Ioffe-Pritchard trap. We include a description of the effect of different choices o…
We introduce here a coherent technique to inject, extract, and velocity filter neutral atoms in a ring trap coupled via tunneling to two additional waveguides. By adiabatically following the transverse spatial dark state, the proposed technique allows for an efficient and robust velocity dependent atomic population transfer between the ring and the input/output waveguides. We have derived explicit conditions for the spatial adiabatic passage that depend on the atomic velocity along the input waveguide as well as on the initial population distribution among the transverse vibrational states. Th…
Adiabatic techniques offer some of the most promising tools to achieve high-fidelity control of the centre-of-mass degree of freedom of single atoms. As their main requirement is to follow an eigenstate of the system, constraints on timing and field strength stability are usually low, especially for trapped systems. In this paper we present a detailed example of a technique to adiabatically transport a single atom between different waveguides on an atom chip. To ensure that all conditions are fulfilled, we carry out fully three dimensional simulations of the system, using experimentally realis…
We considered the two-photon adiabatic rapid passage excitation of a single atom from the ground to a Rydberg state. Three schemes were analyzed: both pump and Stokes fields chirped and pulsed, only the pump field is chirped, and only the pump field is pulsed and chirped while the Stokes field is continuous wave (CW). In all three cases high transfer efficiencies $>99\%$ were achieved for the experimentally realizable Rabi frequencies and the pulse durations of the fields.
We demonstrate the storage of $5$ ns light pulses in a single rubidium atom coupled to a fiber-based optical resonator. Our storage protocol addresses a regime beyond the conventional adiabatic limit and approaches the theoretical bandwidth limit. We extract the optimal control laser pulse properties from a numerical simulation of our system and measure storage efficiencies of $(8.2\pm 0.6)~\%$, in close agreement with the maximum expected efficiency. Such well-controlled and high-bandwidth atom-photon interfaces are key components for future hybrid quantum networks.
A model of the asymmetric coherent scattering process (caused by initial atomic wave-packet splitting in the momentum space) taking place at the large detuning and adiabatic course of interaction for an effective two-state system interacting with a standing wave of laser radiation is discussed. We show that the same form of initial wave-packet splitting may lead to different, in general, diffraction patterns for opposite, adiabatic and resonant, regimes of the standing-wave scattering. We show that the scattering of the Gaussian wave packet in the adiabatic case presents refraction (a limiting…
Coherent transport by adiabatic passage has recently been suggested as a high-fidelity technique to engineer the centre-of-mass state of single atoms in inhomogenous environments. While the basic theory behind this process is well understood, several conceptual challenges for its experimental observation have still to be addressed. One of these is the difficulty that currently available optical or magnetic micro-trap systems have in adjusting the tunneling rate time-dependently while keeping resonance between the asymptotic trapping states at all times. Here we suggest that both requirements c…
We study two-photon excitation of Rydberg states of atoms under stimulated adiabatic passage with delayed laser pulses. We find that the combination of strong interaction between the atoms in Rydberg state and the spontaneous decay of the intermediate exited atomic state leads to the Rydberg excitation of precisely one atom within the atomic ensemble. The quantum Zeno effect offers a lucid interpretation of this result: the Rydberg blocked atoms repetitively scattering photons effectively monitor a randomly excited atom which therefore remains in the Rydberg state. This system can be used for …
Non-adiabatic decay rates for a radio-frequency dressed magnetic trap are calculated using Fermi's Golden Rule: that is, we examine the probability for a single atom to make transitions out of the dressed trap and into a continuum in the adiabatic limit, where perturbation theory can be applied. This approach can be compared to the semi-classical Landau-Zener theory of a resonant dressed atom trap, and it is found that, when carefully implemented, the Landau-Zener theory overestimates the rate of non-adiabatic spin flip transitions in the adiabatic limit. This indicates that care is needed whe…
High-fidelity Bragg pulses are an indispensable tool for state-of-the-art atom interferometry experiments. In this paper, we introduce an analytic theory for such pulses. Our theory is based on the pivotal insight that the physics of Bragg pulses can be accurately described by the adiabatic theorem. We show that efficient Bragg diffraction is possible with any smooth and adiabatic pulse shape and that high-fidelity Gaussian pulses are exclusively adiabatic. Our results give strong evidence that adiabaticity according to the adiabatic theorem is a necessary requirement for high-performance Brag…
We propose a realistic scheme to create motional entangled states of a few bosonic atoms. It can experimentally be realized with a gas of ultra cold bosonic atoms trapped in a deep optical lattice potential. By simultaneously deforming and rotating the trapping potential on each lattice site it is feasible to adiabatically create a variety of entangled states on each lattice well. We fully address the case of N=2 and N=4 atoms per well and identify a sequence of fractional quantum Hall states: the Pfaffian state, the 1/2-Laughlin quasiparticle and the 1/2-Laughlin state. Exact knowledge of the…
We study an architecture for implementing adiabatic quantum computation with trapped neutral atoms. Ground state atoms are dressed by laser fields in a manner conditional on the Rydberg blockade mechanism, thereby providing the requisite entangling interactions. As a benchmark we study the performance of a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem whose solution is found in the ground state spin configuration of an Ising-like model. We model a realistic architecture, including details of the atomic implementation, with qubits encoded into the clock states of 133Cs, effective B…
Robust stimulated Raman exact passages are requisite for controlling nonlinear quantum systems, with the wide applications ranging from ultracold molecules, non-linear optics to superchemistry. Inspired by shortcuts to adiabaticity, we propose the fast-forward scaling of stimulated Raman adiabatic processes with the nonlinearity involved, describing the transfer from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate to a molecular one by controllable external fields. The fidelity and robustness of atom-molecule conversion are shown to surpass those of conventional adiabatic passages, assisted by fast-forward…
We present a fast scheme for arbitrary unitary control of interacting bosonic atoms in a double-well. Assuming fixed inter-well tunnelling rate and intra-well interaction strength, we control the many-atom state by a discrete sequence of shifts of the single-well energies. For strong interactions, resonant tunnelling transitions implement beam-splitter U(2) rotations among atom number eigenstates, which can be combined and, thus, permit full controllability. By numerically optimizing such sequences of couplings at avoided level crossings (CALC), we extend the realm of full controllability to a…
We report on experiments exploring the non-Hermitian dynamics of pairs of two-level atoms tightly confined in an optical lattice and driven by a near-resonant laser. Although spontaneous emission is negligible for the long-lived excited state, two-body dissipation arises from strong inelastic collisions between two atoms in the excited state. We demonstrate quasi-adiabatic control of the internal state of the pairs in the quantum Zeno regime where inelastic losses dominate. Preparing each atom pair in the longest-lived eigenstate of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dissipative dyna…
We implement high-efficiency coherent excitation to a Rydberg state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a cold atom electron and ion source. We achieve an efficiency of 60% averaged over the laser excitation volume with a peak efficiency of 82%, a 1.6 times improvement relative to incoherent pulsed-laser excitation. Using pulsed electric field ionization of the Rydberg atoms we create electron bunches with durations of 250 ps. High-efficiency excitation will increase source brightness, crucial for ultrafast electron diffraction experiments, and coherent excitation to high-lying Rydberg…
We analyze neutral atom Rydberg $C_Z$ gates based on adiabatic pulses applied symmetrically to both atoms. Analysis with smooth pulse shapes and Cs atom parameters predicts the gates can create Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}>0.999$ using adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses. With globally optimized adiabatic pulse shapes, in a two-photon excitation process, we generate Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}=0.997$. The analysis fully accounts for spontaneous emission from intermediate and Rydberg states, including the Rydberg lifetime in a room temperature environment, but does not i…
We analyze excitation of two ground state atoms to a double Rydberg state by a two-photon chirped optical pulse in the regime of adiabatic rapid passage. For intermediate Rydberg-Rydberg interaction strengths, relevant for atoms separated by $\sim$ten $μ$m, adiabatic excitation can be achieved at experimentally feasible Rabi frequencies and chirp rates of the pulses, resulting in high transfer efficiencies. We also study the adiabatic transfer between ground and Rydberg states as a means to realize a controlled phase gate between atomic qubits.

We examine the adiabatic preparation of crystalline phases of Rydberg excitations in a one-dimensional lattice gas by frequency sweep of the excitation laser, as proposed by Pohl et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 043002 (2010)] and recently realized experimentally by Schauß et al. [Science 347, 1455 (2015)]. We find that the preparation of crystals of a few Rydberg excitations in a unitary system of several tens of atoms requires exceedingly long times for the adiabatic following of the ground state of the system Hamiltonian. Using quantum stochastic (Monte-Carlo) wavefunction simulations, we show…
