The concept of relative state is used to introduce geometric phases that originate from correlations in states of composite quantum systems. In particular, we identify an entanglement-induced geometric phase in terms of a weighted average of geometric phase factors associated with a decomposition that define the entanglement of formation. An explicit procedure to calculate the entanglement-induced geometric phase for qubit pairs is put forward. We illustrate it for maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) of two qubits.
The geometric measure of entanglement is an approach to quantifying entanglement that is based on the Hilbert-space distance (or, equivalently, angle) between pure states and their best unentangled approximants. An entanglement witness is an operator that reveals entanglement for a given entangled state. A connection is identified between entanglement witnesses and the geometric measure of entanglement. This offers a new interpretation of the geometric measure of entanglement of a state, and renders it experimentally verifiable, doing so most readily for states that are pure.
Geometric measure of entanglement and geometric phase have recently been used to analyze quantum phase transition in the XY spin chain. We unify these two approaches by showing that the geometric entanglement and the geometric phase are respectively the real and imaginary parts of a complex-valued geometric entanglement, which can be investigated in typical quantum interferometry experiments. We argue that the singular behavior of the complex-value geometric entanglement at a quantum critical point is a characteristic of any quantum phase transition, by showing that the underlying mechanism is…
The geometric measure of entanglement, originated by Shimony and by Barnum and Linden, is determined for a family of tripartite mixed states consisting of aribitrary mixtures of GHZ, W, and inverted-W states. For this family of states, other measures of entanglement, such as entanglement of formation and relative entropy of entanglement, have not been determined. The results for the geometric measure of entanglement are compared with those for negativity, which are also determined. The results for the geometric measure of entanglement and the negativity provide examples of the determination of…
We propose a detailed study of the geometric entanglement properties of pure symmetric N-qubit states, focusing more particularly on the identification of symmetric states with a high geometric entanglement and how their entanglement behaves asymptotically for large N. We show that much higher geometric entanglement with improved asymptotical behavior can be obtained in comparison with the highly entangled balanced Dicke states studied previously. We also derive an upper bound for the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric states. The connection with the quantumness of a state is discu…
We study entanglement witnesses that can be constructed with regard to the geometrical structure of the Hilbert-Schmidt space, i.e. we present how to use these witnesses in the context of quantifying entanglement and the detection of bound entangled states. We give examples for a particular three-parameter family of states that are part of the \emph{magic simplex} of two-qutrit states.
This work aims to understand the monogamy of quantum entanglement from a geometrical point of view. By regarding quantum entanglement as a geometrical structure on the state space of quantum systems and attributing all entanglement related properties as emergent from this geometry of entanglement, we assume there exists a genuine general monogamous relation of quantum entanglement w.r.t. a correspondent genuine entanglement measure Q* which possesses an underlying geometrical origin. We speculate that the monogamous relations w.r.t. an entanglement measure Q can be understood by comparing the …
We construct entanglement monotones for multi-qubit states based on Plücker coordinate equations of Grassmann variety, which are central notion in geometric invariant theory. As an illustrative example, we in details investigate entanglement monotones of a three-qubit state.
We investigate entanglement dynamics and properties of double Jaynes-Cummings model. In particular we study the dynamics of double Jaynes-Cummings model based on geometric invariants for four qubits. We show that these geometric invariants provide us with useful information about different types of entanglement during the quantum evolution of the system.
As two of the most important entanglement measures--the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of distillation--have so far been limited to bipartite settings, the study of other entanglement measures for multipartite systems appears necessary. Here, connections between two other entanglement measures--the relative entropy of entanglement and the geometric measure of entanglement--are investigated. It is found that for arbitrary pure states the latter gives rise to a lower bound on the former. For certain pure states, some bipartite and some multipartite, this lower bound is saturated,…
One of the biggest problems in the theory of quantum information is the quantification of amount of entanglement in an arbitrary multipartite mixed state. Different axiomatic and operational measures were proposed so far. In this work we will establish a connection between geometric measure of entanglement proposed in [Phys. Rev. A 68, 042307 (2003)] and measures based on fidelity. One result will be, that geometric and revised geometric measure of entanglement proposed in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 40, 3507 (2007)] are equal. Further a useful expression for fidelity is derived.
We develop a geometric approach to quantify the capability of creating entanglement for a general physical interaction acting on two qubits. We use the entanglement measure proposed by us for $N$-qubit pure states (PRA \textbf{77}, 062334 (2008)). Our procedure reproduces the earlier results (PRL \textbf{87}, 137901 (2001)). The geometric method has the distinct advantage that it gives an experimental way to monitor the process of optimizing entanglement production.
We quantify the geometric measure of entanglement in terms of mean values of observables of entangled system. For pure states we find the relation of geometric measure of entanglement with the mean value of spin one-half for the system composed of spin and arbitrary quantum system. The geometric measure of entanglement for mixed states of rank-2 is studied as well. We find the explicit expression for geometric entanglement and the relation of entanglement in this case with the values of spin correlations. These results allow to find experimentally the value of entanglement by measuring a value…
Using the approach offered by quantum speed limit, we show that geometric measure of multipartite entanglement for pure states [Phys. Rev. A 68, 042307(2003)] can be interpreted as the minimal time necessary to unitarily evolve a given quantum state to a separable one.
We propose a theoretical scheme to witness quantum entanglement via the geometric phase in an impurity-doped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is a micro-macro quantum system consisting of two Rydberg impurity qubits and the BEC. We calculate the geometric phase of the impurity qubits in the presence of the initial micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement, respectively. It is demonstrated that the geometric phase of the impurity qubits can witness not only inter-qubit micro-micro entanglement, but also qubit-BEC micro-macro entanglement. Our work provide a new insight to witness micro-micr…
The geometric measure of entanglement of a pure state, defined by its distance to the set of pure separable states, is extended to multipartite mixed states. We characterize the nearest disentangled mixed state to a given mixed state with respect to this measure by a system of equations. The entanglement eigenvalue for a mixed state is introduced. For a given mixed state, we show that its nearest disentangled mixed state is associated with its entanglement eigenvalue.
We have studied the concurrence of two-site entanglement and have shown that it is related to the geometric phase accumulated due to a complete rotation of the entangled state. The geometric phase and hence the concurrence is evaluated for transverse Ising model and antiferromagnetic chain which is found to be in good agreement with that obtained by other methods.
Using a kinematic approach we show that the non-adiabatic, non-cyclic, geometric phase corresponding to the radiation emitted by a three level cascade system provides a sensitive diagnostic tool for determining the entanglement properties of the two modes of radiation. The nonunitary, noncyclic path in the state space may be realized through the same control parameters which control the purity/mixedness and entanglement. We show analytically that the geometric phase is related to concurrence in certain region of the parameter space. We further show that the rate of change of the geometric phas…
We present an analytical approach to evaluate the geometric measure of multiparticle entanglement for mixed quantum states. Our method allows the computation of this measure for a family of multiparticle states with a certain symmetry and delivers lower bounds on the measure for general states. It works for an arbitrary number of particles, for arbitrary classes of multiparticle entanglement, and can also be used to determine other entanglement measures.
Quantifying coherence and entanglement is extremely important in quantum information processing. Here, we present numerical and analytical results for the geometric measure of coherence, and also present numerical results for the geometric measure of entanglement. On the one hand, we first provide a semidefinite algorithm to numerically calculate geometric measure of coherence for arbitrary finite-dimensional mixed states. Based on this semidefinite algorithm, we test randomly generated single-qubit states, single-qutrit states, and a special kind of $d$-dimensional mixed states. Moreover, we …
This article proposes an efficient way of calculating the geometric measure of entanglement using tensor decomposition methods. The connection between these two concepts is explored using the tensor representation of the wavefunction. Numerical examples are benchmarked and compared. Furthermore, we search for highly entangled qubit states to show the applicability of this method.
We show how to detect entangled, bound entangled, and separable bipartite quantum states of arbitrary dimension and mixedness using geometric entanglement witnesses. These witnesses are constructed using properties of the Hilbert-Schmidt geometry and can be shifted along parameterized lines. The involved conditions are simplified using Bloch decompositions of operators and states. As an example we determine the three different types of states for a family of two-qutrit states that is part of the "magic simplex", i.e. the set of Bell-state mixtures of arbitrary dimension.
The geometric measure of entanglement for a symmetric pure state with nonnegative amplitudes has attracted much attention. On the other hand, the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors (hypermatrices) has been developed rapidly. In this paper, we show how the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors can be applied to the study of the geometric measure of entanglement for a pure state with nonnegative amplitudes. Especially, an elimination method for computing the geometric measure of entanglement for symmetric pure multipartite qubit or qutrit states with nonnegative amplitudes is given. For sym…
In a recent article [Phys. Rev. A 86, 024302 (2012)], the authors have derived some hierarchy relations between geometric discord and entanglement (measured by negativity and its square). We point out that these results are incorrect and give analytic counterexamples. We also discuss briefly the reason for such violations.
Detecting quantumness of correlations (especially entanglement) is a very hard task even in the simplest case i.e. two-partite quantum systems. Here we provide an analysis whether there exists a relation between two most popular types of entanglement identifiers: the first one based on positive maps and not directly applicable in laboratory and the second one --- geometric entanglement identifier which is based on specific Hermiticity-preserving maps. We show a profound relation between those two types of entanglement criteria. Hereunder we have proposed a general framework of nonlinear functi…
We present an revised geometric measure of entanglement (RGME). The revised version is an entanglement monotone. Some useful inequalities about RGME are deduced. For exemplification, we give the formulas of RGME for the two-parameter class of states in $2 \otimes n$ quantum system, the two particles high dimensional maximally entangled mixed state, the isotropic state including $n$-particle $d$-level case and two multipartite bound entangled states. The result shows there is a relation $\widetilde{E}_{\sin^2} \leq E_{re}$, which indicates that the RGME is an appropriate measure of entanglement…
The entanglement between two identical two-level atoms interacting with two mode thermal field through a nondegenerate two-photon process has been suggested. It has been shown that for some atomic initial state the entanglement induced by nondegenerate two-photon interaction is larger than that induced by one-photon and degenerate two-photon processes.
It is shown that the geometric measure of entanglement of a pure multipartite state satisfies a polynomial equation, generalising the characteristic equation of the matrix of coefficients of a bipartite state. The equation is solved for a class of three-qubit states.
Within the framework of constructions for quantifying entanglement, we build a natural scenario for the assembly of multipartite entanglement measures based on Hopf bundle-like mappings obtained through Clifford algebra representations. Then, given the non-factorizability of an arbitrary two-qubit density matrix, we give an alternate quantity that allows the construction of two types of entanglement measures based on their arithmetical and geometrical averages over all pairs of qubits in a register of size N, and thus fully characterize its degree and type of entanglement. We find that such an…
The geometric measure of entanglement, which expresses the minimum distance to product states, has been generalized to distances to sets that remain invariant under the stochastic reducibility relation. For each such set, an associated entanglement monotone can be defined. The explicit analytical forms of these measures are obtained for bipartite entangled states. Moreover, the three qubit case is discussed and argued that the distance to the W states is a new monotone.
We study the evolution of quantum entanglement in double cavity systems. The entanglement of cavity atoms induced by entangled pair of photons is investigated. Both entanglement sudden death and entanglement sudden birth phenomena are shown to be existed and analyzed in detail. We also propose a strategy to enhance the entanglement between the atom in one cavity and the photon in another cavity by using quantum Zeno effect.
The geometric measure of entanglement is the distance or angle between an entangled target state and the nearest unentangled state. Often one considers the geometric measure of entanglement for highly symmetric entangled states because it simplifies the calculations and allows for analytic solutions. Although some symmetry is required in order to deal with large numbers of qubits, we are able to loosen significantly the restrictions on the highly symmetric states considered previously, and consider several generalizations of the coefficients of both target and unentangled states. This allows u…
We investigate the possibility of chaining qubits by letting pairs of nearest neighbours qubits dissipating into common environments. We then study entanglement dynamics within the chain and show that steady state entanglement can be achieved.
Computing entanglement of an arbitrary bipartite or multipartite mixed state is in general not an easy task as it usually involves complex optimization. Here we show that exploiting symmetries of certain mixed states, we can compute a genuine multiparty entanglement measure, the generalized geometric measure for these classes of mixed states. The chosen states have different ranks and consist of an arbitrary number of parties.
The effect of entanglement on off-diagonal geometric phases is investigated in the paper. Two spin-1/2 particles in magnetic fields along the $y$ direction are taken as an example. Three parameters (the purity of state $r$, the mixing angle $θ$ and the relative phase $β$) are chosen to characterize the initial states. The nodal points at which the usual geometric phases disappear are calculated and illustrated as a function of the three parameters.
The degree to which a pure quantum state is entangled can be characterized by the distance or angle to the nearest unentangled state. This geometric measure of entanglement is explored for bi-partite and multi-partite pure and mixed states. It is determined analytically for arbitrary two-qubit mixed states, generalized Werner, and isotropic states, and is also applied to certain multi-partite mixed states, including two distinct multi-partite bound entangled states. Moreover, the ground-state entanglement of the XY model in a transverse field is calculated and shown to exhibit singular behavio…
Bipartite maximally entangled states have the property that the largest Schmidt coefficient reaches its lower bound. However, for multipartite states the standard Schmidt decomposition generally does not exist. We use a generalized Schmidt decomposition and the geometric measure of entanglement to characterize three-qubit pure states and derive a single-parameter family of maximally entangled three-qubit states. The paradigmatic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states emerge as extreme members in this family of maximally entangled states. This family of states possess different trends o…
The main objective of the paper is to unveil an adequate mathematics hidden behind entanglement, that is Geometric Invariant Theory. More specifically relation between these two subjects can be described by the following theses. (i) Total variance of completely entangled state is maximal. (ii) This distinguishes the state as a minimal vector in its orbit under action of complexified dynamic group. (iii) An ultimate aim of Geometric Invariant Theory is a description of complex orbits and their minimal vectors. It suggests that noncompletely entangled states are just GIT semistable vectors.
In this work we propose the geometric mean of bipartite concurrences as a genuine multipartite entanglement measure. This measure achieves the maximum value for absolutely maximally entangled states and has desirable properties for quantifying potential quantum resources. The simplicity and symmetry in the definition facilitates its computation for various multipartite entangled states including the GHZ states and the $W$ states. With explicit examples we show that our measure results in distinct entanglement orderings from other measures, and can detect differences in certain types of genuine…
We provide a class of Bell diagonal entanglement witnesses displaying an additional local symmetry -- a maximal commutative subgroup of the unitary group U(n). Remarkably, this class of witnesses is parameterized by a torus being a maximal commutative subgroup of an orthogonal group SO(n-1). It is shown that a generic element from the class defines an indecomposable entanglement witness. The paper provides a geometric perspective for some aspects of the entanglement theory and an interesting interplay between group theory and block-positive operators.
Correlation beyond entanglement is a subject of interest in quantum information. Here we have shown the existence of quantum correlation without entanglement in Heisenberg $XYZ$ spin model with external magnetic field, using different versions of measurement-induced nonlocality. However maximally entangled states are shown to possess maximum correlation.
We establish relations between geometric quantum discord and entanglement quantifiers obtained by means of optimal witness operators. In particular, we prove a relation between negativity and geometric discord in the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, which is slightly different from a previous conjectured one [Phys. Rev. A 84, 052110 (2011)].We also show that, redefining the geometric discord with the trace norm, better bounds can be obtained. We illustrate our results numerically.
We present an easy implementable algorithm for approximating the geometric measure of entanglement from above. The algorithm can be applied to any multipartite mixed state. It involves only the solution of an eigenproblem and finding a singular value decomposition, no further numerical techniques are needed. To provide examples, the algorithm was applied to the isotropic states of 3 qubits and the 3-qubit XX model with external magnetic field.
Multi-qubit graph states generated by the action of controlled phase shift operators on a separable quantum state of a system, in which all the qubits are in arbitrary identical states, are examined. The geometric measure of entanglement of a qubit with other qubits is found for the graph states represented by arbitrary graphs. The entanglement depends on the degree of the vertex representing the qubit, the absolute values of the parameter of the phase shift gate, and the parameter of state the gate is acting on. Also, the geometric measure of entanglement of the graph states is quantified on …
The pairwise entanglement, measured by concurrence and geometric phase in $d=2,3$-dimensional free-fermion lattice systems have been studied for the ground state in this paper. Their derivation with respect to the external parameter show the singularity closed to the phase transition points, and can be used to detect the phase transition in this model. Furthermore our studies show for the free-fermion model that both concurrence and geometric phase shows the intimate connection with the correlation functions. The possible relation between concurrence and geometric phase has been also discussed…
We consider a pair of three - level atoms interacting with a common vacuum and analyze the process of entanglement production due to spontaneous emission. We show that in the case of closely separated atoms, collective damping can generate robust entanglement of the asymptotic states.
We study the entanglement properties of the ground state in Kitaev's model. This is a two-dimensional spin system with a torus topology and nontrivial four-body interactions between its spins. For a generic partition $(A,B)$ of the lattice we calculate analytically the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix $ρ_A$ in the ground state. We prove that the geometric entropy associated with a region $A$ is linear in the length of its boundary. Moreover, we argue that entanglement can probe the topology of the system and reveal topological order. Finally, no partition has zero entanglement…
Comprehending the connections between the geometric, topological, and dynamical structures of integrable quantum systems with quantum phenomena exploitable in quantum information tasks, such as quantum entanglement, is a major problem in geometric information science. In this work we investigate these issues in a physical system of $\mathcal{N}$ interacting spin-$\mathtt{s}$ under long-range Ising model. We discover the relevant dynamics, identify the corresponding quantum phase space and we derive the associated Fubini-Study metric. Through the application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the …
I sketch how the set of pure quantum states forms a phase space, and then point out a curiousity concerning maximally entangled pure states: they form a minimal Lagrangian submanifold of the set of all pure states. I suggest that this curiousity should have an interesting physical interpretation.
We first propose a new separability criterion based on algebraic-geometric invariants of bipartite mixed states introduced in [1], then prove that for all low ranks r <m+n-2, generic rank r mixed states in mxn systems have relatively high Schmidt numbers (thus entangled) by this separability criterion. This also means that the algebraic-geometric separability criterion proposed here can be used to dectect all low rank entangled mixed states outside a measure zero set.
We propose an experiment in which an entangled pair of optical pulses are propagated through non-uniform gravitational fields. A field operator calculation of this situation predicts decoherence of the optical entanglement under experimentally realistic conditions.
The relation between quantum phase transitions, entanglement, and geometric phases is investigated with a system of two qubits with XY type interaction. A seam of level crossings of the system is a circle in parameter space of the anisotropic coupling and the transverse magnetic field, which is identical to the disorder line of an one-dimensional XY model. The entanglement of the ground state changes abruptly as the parameters vary across the circle except specific points crossing to the straight line of the zero magnetic field. At those points the entanglement does not change but the ground s…
Any two-qubit state can be represented geometrically by a steering ellipsoid inside the Bloch sphere. We extend this approach to represent any block positive two-qubit operator $B$. We derive a novel classification scheme based on the positivity of $\det B$ and $\det B^\mathrm{T_B}$; this shows that any ellipsoid inside the Bloch sphere must represent either a two-qubit state or a two-qubit entanglement witness. We focus on such witnesses and their corresponding ellipsoids, finding that properties such as witness optimality are naturally manifest in this geometric representation.
We give an explicit expression for the geometric measure of entanglement for three qubit states that are linear combinations of four orthogonal product states. It turns out that the geometric measure for these states has three different expressions depending on the range of definition in parameter space. Each expression of the measure has its own geometrically meaningful interpretation. Such an interpretation allows oneself to take one step toward a complete understanding for the general properties of the entanglement measure. The states that lie on joint surfaces separating different ranges o…
We show that the mistakes pointed out by Rana and Parashar [Phys. Rev. A 87, 016301 (2013)] do not invalidate the main conclusion of our work [Phys. Rev. A 86, 024302 (2012)]. We show that the errors affected only a particular application of our general results, and present the correction.
In this letter we discuss a new entanglement measure. It is based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of operators. We give an explicit formula for calculating the entanglement of a large set of states on C^2 \times C^2. Furthermore we find some relations between the entanglement of relative entropy and the Hilbert-Schmidt entanglement. A rigorous definition of partial transposition is given in the appendix.
We present a concise introduction to quantum entanglement. Concentrating on bipartite systems we review the separability criteria and measures of entanglement. We focus our attention on geometry of the sets of separable and maximally entangled states. We treat in detail the two-qubit system and emphasise in what respect this case is a special one.
