In this talk, recent results are presented of calculations of electromagnetic form factors of hadrons in the framework of two quantum field theories (QFT), (a) Dual-Large $N_c$ QCD (Dual-$QCD_\infty$) for the pion, proton, and $Δ(1236)$, and (b) the Kroll-Lee-Zumino (KLZ) fully renormalizable Abelian QFT for the pion form factor. Both theories provide a QFT platform to improve on naive (tree-level) Vector Meson Dominance (VMD). Dual-$QCD_\infty$ provides a tree-level improvement by incorporating an infinite number of zero-width resonances, which can be subsequently shifted from the real axis to account for the time-like behaviour of the form factors. The renormalizable KLZ model provides a QFT improvement of VMD in the framework of perturbation theory. Due to the relative mildness of the $ρππ$ coupling, and the size of loop suppression factors, the perturbative expansion is well defined in spite of this being a strong coupling theory. Both approaches lead to considerable improvements of VMD predictions for electromagnetic form factors, in excellent agreement with data.
We propose an extension of the minimal-substitution prescription for coupling the electromagnetic field to hadronic systems with internal structure. The resulting rules of extended substitution necessarily distinguish between couplings to scalar and Dirac particles. Moreover, they allow for the incorporation of electromagnetic form factors for virtual photons in an effective phenomenological framework. Applied to pions and nucleons, assumed to be fully dressed to all orders, the resulting dressed currents are shown to be locally gauge invariant. Moreover, half-on-shell expressions of (hadron p…
We review the current status of electromagnetic form factor calculations in perturbative QCD. There is growing evidence that factorization prescriptions involving a transverse coordinate integration, such as that of Li and Sterman, are more appropriate than the prescription of LePage and Brodsky. Color transparency is naturally described within the formalism. We report the first explicit calculations of color transparency and nuclear filtering as perturbatively calculable phenomena.
In the previous papers (/quant-ph/0204037, /quant-ph/0204134, quant-ph/0205075), based on Dirac's equation we have considered the electromagnetic structure of the leptons. In the present paper, using the Yang-Mills equation we will analyse the electromagnetic structure of the hadrons.
The electromagnetic properties of baryons containing a heavy quark are calculated at next-to-leading order in partially quenched heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. Calculations are performed for three light flavors in the isospin limit and additionally for two light non-degenerate flavors. We use partially-quenched charge matrices that are easy to implement on the lattice. The results presented are necessary for the light quark mass extrapolation and zero-momentum extrapolation of lattice QCD and partially quenched lattice QCD calculations of heavy hadron electromagnetic properties. Addi…
We investigate restrictions on the hadronic contribution to the muon $(g-2)$ factor and to the pion electromagnetic formfactor from the analytical properties of the pion formfactor and the experimental data of the pion formfactor in the space-like [1] region. The values of the pion formfactor of [1] have been improved (see Table 1) and the values of the pion formfactor have been calculated at 20 additional points (see Table 2).
Hadron electromagnetic form factors of hadrons in the time-like region at the boundary of the physical region is considered. The energy behaviour of the form factor is shown to be dominantely determined by the strong hadron-antihadron interaction. The scattering length imaginary part for $p-\bar{p}$, $Λ-\barΛ$, $Σ^0-\bar{Σ^0}$ are evaluated. We propose experiments to extract the information on the nearthreshold baryon-antibaryon interaction by using of hadron form foctors.
When quarks hadronize, they accelerate. Because they carry electric charge, they must radiate light as they accelerate and hadronize. This is true not only in jets but also in heavy ion collisions, where a thermalized plasma of quarks and gluons cools into a gas of hadrons. First, direct emission of photons from two quarks coalescing into pions is calculated using the quark-meson model. The yield of final-state photons to pions is found to be about $e^2/g^2_{πqq}$, which is on the order of a percent. Second, the yield of photons from the decay of highly excited color singlets, which may exist …
In Ultra Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions (URHIC's) the light vector mesons play a crucial role in the description of hadronic interactions in a non-pertrubative QCD region. In this region efective hadron models use composite hadrons and mesons as field carriers instead of quarks and gluons. This theoretical review article tries to give a short way of understanding the underlying theory that we have for the conversion of vector mesons into photons together with the so-called Vector Dominance Model (VDM) and the electromagnetic form factors.
We demonstrate that a $u-d$ mass difference (which we estimate to be about 4 MeV) within quantum loops, can reproduce the effects of the Coleman-Glashow electromagnetic tadpole operator.
The Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT) has been very successful in describing low-energy hadronic properties in the non-perturbative regime of Quantum Chromodynamics. The results of ChPT, many of which are currently under active experimental investigation, provide stringent predictions of many fundamental properties of hadrons, including quantities such as electromagnetic polarizabilities. Yet, even for the simplest hadronic system, a pion, we still have a broad spectrum of polarizability measurements (MARK II, VENUS, ALEPH, TPC/2g, CELLO, Belle, Crystal Ball). The meson polarizability can be a…
Electromagnetic field produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions contains much useful information, because the field can be directly related to the motion of the matter in the whole stage of the reaction. One can divide the total electromagnetic field into three parts, i.e., the contributions from the incident nuclei, non-participating nucleons and charged fluid, the latter consisting of strongly interacting hadrons or quarks. Parametrizing the space-time evolution of the charged fluid based on hydrodynamic model, we study the development of the electromagnetic field which accompanies the hi…
In this talk, results are presented of determinations of electromagnetic form factors of hadrons (pion, proton, and $Δ(1236)$) in the framework of Dual-Large $N_c$ QCD (Dual-$QCD_\infty$). This framework improves considerably tree-level VMD results by incorporating an infinite number of zero-width resonances, with masses and couplings fixed by the dual-resonance (Veneziano-type) model.
In a recent paper, based on the Skyrme model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten term including electromagnetism, Eto et al. pointed out an intriguing possibility that the Gell-Mann-Nishijima relation is corrected under the presence of back-ground electromagnetic fields, thereby being led to the conclusion that even a neutron acquires non-zero net charge in external magnetic fields. We point out that this remarkable conclusion is inseparably connected with an unwelcome feature of the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action, i.e. the non-conservation of source current of Maxwell equation.
Temperature effects on the electromagnetic couplings of pions in hot hadronic matter are studied with an effective chiral Lagrangian. We show that the Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied at non-zero temperature in the soft pion limit. The in-medium electromagnetic form factor of the pion is obtained in the time-like region and shown to be reduced in magnitude, especially near the vector-meson resonance region. Finally, we discuss the consequences of this medium effect on dilepton production from hot hadronic matter.
General solution of asymptotic conditions, derived previously for n vector-meson parametrization of electromagnetic form factor of any strongly interacting particle with asymptotics 1/t^m (m<n) and combined with a form factor normalization condition, is presented. The special case of m=n and the solution of asymptotic conditions without any form factor normalization are discussed too.
We study the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in a collective model of baryons. Using the algebraic approach to hadron structure, we derive closed expressions for both elastic and transition form factors, and consequently for the helicity amplitudes that can be measured in electro- and photoproduction. Effects of spin-flavor symmetry breaking and of swelling of hadrons with increasing excitation energy are considered.
Hadron electromagnetic form factors contain dynamical information on the intrinsic structure of the hadrons. The pioneering work developed at the Kharkov Physical-Technical Institute in the 60's on the relation between the polarized cross section and form factors triggered a number of experiments. Such experiments could be performed only recently, due to the progress in accelerator and polarimetry techniques. The principle of these measurements is recalled and the surprising and very precise results obtained on proton are presented. The actual status of nucleon electromagnetic form factors is …
A constituent quark model is developed for an arbitrary light- cone direction ω. Form factors are obtained from free one-body electromagnetic current matrix elements. They are found to be ω- independent for spin-0 mesons, the nucleon and Λhyperon, while there is ω-dependence for spin-1 systems like the deuteron.
An approach for describing the electromagnetic form factors of hadrons, in the space- and time-like regions, within a constituent quark model on the light front is shortly illustrated and calculations for the pion case are reported. Three main ingredients enter our approach: i) the dressed photon vertex where a photon decays in a quark-antiquark pair, ii) the on-shell quark-hadron vertex functions in the valence sector, and iii) the non-valence component of the hadron state.
A system of linear homogeneous algebraic equations for coupling constant ratios of vector-mesons to hadrons is derived by imposing an asymptotic behaviuor upon the VMD pole parametrization of an hadron electromagnetic form factor. A similar system of equations with a simpler structure of coefficients, taken as even powers of vector-meson masses, is derived by means of integral superconvergent sum rules for the imaginary part of the considered from factor using its appropriate delta function approximation. Although both systems have been derived starting from different properties of the electro…
We discuss the general features of the electromagnetic radiation from a thermal hadronic gas as constrained by chiral symmetry. The medium effects on the electromagnetic spectral functions and the partial restoration of chiral symmetry are quantified in terms of the pion densities. The results are compared with the electromagnetic radiation from a strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma in terms of the leading gluon condensate operators. We use the spectral functions as constrained by the emission rates to estimate the electric conductivity, the light flavor susceptibility and diffusion consta…
Investigation of the spacelike and timelike electromagnetic form factors of hadrons, within a relativistic microscopical model characterized by a small set of hypothesis, could shed light on the components of hadron states beyond the valence one. Our relativistic approach has been successfully applied first to the pion and then the extension to the nucleon has been undertaken. The pion case is shortly reviewed as an illustrative example for introducing the main ingredients of our approach, and preliminary results for the nucleon in the spacelike range $-10 (GeV/c)^2\le q^2 \le 0$ are evaluated…
It is proposed to identify a strong electric field created during relativistic collisions of asymmetric nuclei via observation of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of hadrons with the same mass but opposite charges. The detailed calculation results for the directed flow within the Parton-Hadron String Dynamics model are given for Cu-Au interactions at the NICA collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=9$ and $5$ GeV. The separation effect is observable at 9 GeV as clearly as at 200 GeV
In quantum field theory, the splitting of the Hamiltonian into a strong and an electromagnetic part cannot be performed in a unique manner. We propose a convention for disentangling these two effects: one matches the parameters of two theories -- with and without electromagnetic interactions -- at a given scale mu_1, referred to as the matching scale. This procedure enables one to analyze the separation of strong and electromagnetic contributions in a transparent manner. We illustrate the method -- in the framework of the loop expansion -- in a Yukawa model, as well as in the linear sigma mode…
It has been realized for a long time that knowing the ηand η' wave functions in terms of quark and gluon components probes our understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics. Great effort has been given to this challenge -- yet no clear picture has emerged even with the most recent KLOE data. We point out which measurements would be most helpful in arriving at a more definite conclusion. A better knowledge of these wave functions will significantly help to disentangle the weight of different decay subprocesses in semi-leptonic decays of D^+, D_s^+ and B^+ mesons. The resulting insights will be…
Weak interactions in two-nucleon system at low energies are explored in the framework of effective field theory. We review our recent calculations of parity-violating observables in radiative neutron capture on a proton at threshold where both pionful and pionless theories are employed.
It has been proposed that strong electromagnetic fields produced in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions can lead to splitting of the rapidity-odd directed flow of positive and negative hadrons. For light hadrons, the interpretation of such measurements is complicated by the low magnitude of directed flow as well as by ambiguities arising from transported quarks. To overcome these complications, we propose measurements using only hadrons carrying produced quarks ($\bar{u},\bar{d},s,\bar{s}$). We discuss how to identify the kinematics where such hadrons are produced via the coalescence mech…
On account of its application to the present and future analysis of the virtual photon correction to the hadronic properties by means of lattice QCD simulation, we initiate the study of the finite size scaling effect on the QED correction using low energy effective theory of QCD with QED. For this purpose, we begin with formulating a new QED on the space with finite volume. By adapting this formalism to the partially quenched QCD with electromagnetism, we explore the qualitative features of the finite size scaling effect on the electromagnetic correction to the masses of pseudo-Goldstone boson…

The electromagnetic productions of $J ψ$ associated with light hadrons(LH) and leptonic pairs($μ^+μ^-$, $τ^+τ^-$) at $B$ factories are studied. We find that the direct electromagnetic production cross sections of $J / ψ$($ψ(2S)$) associated with light hadrons is about $0.10(0.04)$ pb. The direct production cross sections of $J / ψ$($ψ(2S)$) associated with $μ^+μ^-$ is about $0.056(0.020)$ pb. If we include the contributions from $ψ(2S)$ decay, we can get the prompt cross section $σ[e^+e^- \to J/ψ+μ^+μ^-]=(0.068 \pm 0.002)$ pb, about $(16 \pm 5) %$ of the Belle data $σ[e^+e^- \to J/ψ+X_{non-c\b…
The description of electromagnetic reactions at intermediate energies, such as pion electroproduction or (virtual) Compton scattering, traditionally starts from covariant tree-level Feynman diagrams (Born or pole terms). Internal hadron structure is included by means of (on-shell) form factors in the vertices while free propagators are used. To overcome problems with gauge invariance, simple prescriptions such as choosing $F_1^V (q^2) = F_π (q^2)$ in pion electroproduction or the ``minimal substitution'' are used. We discuss the limitations of such approaches by comparing to the most general s…
As demonstrated by Chernodub, strong magnetic field forces vacuum to develop real condensates of electrically charged rho mesons, which form an anisotropic inhomogeneous superconducting state similar to Abrikosov vortex lattice. As far as electromagnetic field behaviour is concerned, this state of vacuum constitutes a hyperbolic metamaterial [1]. Here we demonstrate that spatial variations of magnetic field may lead to formation of electromagnetic "black holes" inside this metamaterial. Similar to real black holes, horizon area of the electromagnetic "black holes" is quantized in units of the …
Nonuniform background electromagnetic fields, once implemented in lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations of hadronic systems, provide a means to constrain a large class of electromagnetic properties of hadrons and nuclei, from their higher electromagnetic moments and charge radii to their electromagnetic form factors. We show how nonuniform fields can be constructed on a periodic hypercubic lattice under certain conditions and determine the precise form of the background U(1) gauge links that must be imposed on the quantum chromodynamics gauge-field configurations to maintain periodicity.…
We construct the potentials that describe the spectrum and decay of electromagnetic bound states of hadrons, and are consistent with ChPT. These potentials satisfy the matching condition which enables one to express the parameters of the potential through the threshold scattering amplitudes calculated in ChPT. We further analyze the ambiguity in the choice of the short-range hadronic potentials, which satisfy this matching condition.
The strong electromagnetic fields associated with ultra-relativistic protons and nuclei correspond to an equivalent flux of photons. At the future Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the corresponding photon-nucleon center of mass energies will be higher than at any existing accelerator. The experimental and theoretical aspects of particle production in electromagnetic interactions at hadron colliders are reviewed.
We study $O(α_sv^2)$ corrections to decays of $^1S_0$ heavy quarkonium into light hadrons and two photons within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD, and find these $O(α_sv^2)$ corrections to have significant contributions especially for the decay into light hadrons. With these new results, experimental measurements of the hadronic width and the $γγ$ width of $η_c$ can be described more consistently. By fitting experimental data, we find the long-distance matrix elements of $η_c$ to be $|\mathcal{R}_{η_c}(0)|^2=0.834^{+0.281}_{-0.197}\ \textrm{GeV}^3$ and $< \bm{v}^2 >_{η_c}=0.232^{+0.121}_{-…
We consider the production of high invariant mass jet pairs at hadron colliders as a test for TeV scale gravitational effects. We find that this signal can probe effective Planck masses of about 10 TeV at the LHC with center of mass energy of 14 TeV and 1.5 TeV at the Tevatron with center of mass energy of 2 TeV. These results are compared to analogous scattering processes at leptonic colliders.
The paper is devoted to the construction of low-energy quark scattering amplitudes. Bootstrap quark model allows to describe the light and heavy hadron spectroscopy based on three principles: unitarity, analicity and crossing symmetry. The resulting quark interaction appeared to be effectively short-range. This interaction is determined mainly by the exchange in the gluon channel: the constituent-gluon mass appeared to not be small. Our calculation indicates an important role of an interaction which is induced by instantons. Such an interaction is necessary for deriving both the pion mass and …
Some form factors of ground-state hadrons with spin might show a zero crossing at spacelike momenta of electron-hadron scattering. In the timelike region of hadron-antihadron production by electron-positron collisions the form factors become complex. When the hadrons decay, the relative phases between form factors can be measured by the angular distributions of their decay products. Using analyticity and the QCD high-energy limits for constraint-free form factors and for helicity amplitudes, we show how a single zero crossing in the spacelike region is related to the high-energy limit of the p…
If any violation of Lorentz symmetry exists in the hadron sector, its ultimate origins must lie at the quark level. We continue the analysis of how the theories at these two levels are connected, using chiral perturbation theory. Considering a two-flavor quark theory, with dimension-4 operators that break Lorentz symmetry, we derive a low-energy theory of pions and nucleons that is invariant under local chiral transformations and includes the coupling to external fields. The pure meson and baryon sectors, as well as the couplings between them and the couplings to external electromagnetic and w…
We discuss the basic principles of constructing a meaningful perturbative scheme for effective theory. The main goal of this talk is to explain the approach and to present recent results obtained with the help of the method of Cauchy forms in several complex variables.
A nonperturbative approach to QCD describing confinement and chiral symmetry breaking is discussed. It is based on the path integral representation of Green's function of quarks and leads to the QCD string theory. The effective actions for mesons and baryons in the external uniform static electromagnetic fields are obtained. The area law of the Wilson loop integral, the approximation of the Nambu-Goto straight-line string, and the asymmetric quark-diquark structure of nucleons are used to simplify the problem. The spin-orbit and spin-spin interactions of quarks are treated as a perturbation. U…
Electromagnetic polarizabilities describe the response of a system to the application of an external quasi-static electric or magnetic field. In this article experimental and theoretical work addressing the polarizabilities of the light hadrons is examined.
In theories with large extra dimensions, we study the top spin correlations at the Large Hadron Collider. The s-channel process mediated by graviton Kaluza-Klein modes contributes to the top-antitop pair production in addition to the Standard Model processes, and affects the resultant top spin correlations. We calculated the full density matrix for the top-antitop pair production. With the fundamental scale of the extra dimensional theory below 2 TeV, we find a sizable deviation of the top spin correlations from the Standard Model one.
It has been realized for a long time that knowing the eta and eta^prime wave functions in terms of quark and gluon components probes our understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics. Great effort has been given to this challenge -- yet no clear picture has emerged even with the most recent KLOE data. We point out which measurements would be most helpful in arriving at a more definite conclusion. A better knowledge of these wave functions will significantly help to disentangle the weight of different decay subprocesses in semi-leptonic decays of D+, Ds^+ and B+ mesons. The resulting insights …
As the heaviest known fundamental particle, the top quark ensures testing of the Standard Model and occupies a significant role in a lot of theories of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Up to now, the top quark has been only generated at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. However, one of the most important tasks of the physics program at the Large Hadron Collider is the investigation of the anomalous top quark interactions. In addition, the production of single top quarks, though rarer than production in pairs, presents us a different way to study the top quark produced via the e…
The dependence of the hadron interaction on its structure is examined in the framework of the generelized parton distributions (GPDs). The x dependence of the GPDs is determined by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), which were obtained from the deep inelastic scattering. The analysis of the whole sets of experimental data on the electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron with taking into account many forms of PDFs, obtained by the different Collaborations, make it possible to obtain the special momentum transfer dependence of the GPDs. This permits us to obtain the electroma…
For some time, the MILC Collaboration has been studying electromagnetic effects on light mesons. These calculations use fully dynamical QCD, but only quenched photons, which suffices to NLO in XPT. That is, the sea quarks are electrically neutral, while the valence quarks carry charge. For the photons we use the non-compact formalism. We have new results with lattice spacing as small as 0.045 fm and a large range of volumes. We consider how well chiral perturbation theory describes these results and the implications for light quark masses
