Electromagnetic field produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions contains much useful information, because the field can be directly related to the motion of the matter in the whole stage of the reaction. One can divide the total electromagnetic field into three parts, i.e., the contributions from the incident nuclei, non-participating nucleons and charged fluid, the latter consisting of strongly interacting hadrons or quarks. Parametrizing the space-time evolution of the charged fluid based on hydrodynamic model, we study the development of the electromagnetic field which accompanies the high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We found that the incident nuclei bring a rather strong electromagnetic field to the interaction region of hadrons or quarks over a few fm after the collision. On the other hand, the observed charged hadrons' spectra are mostly affected (Coulomb effect) by the field of the charged fluid. We compare the result of our model with experimental data and found that the model reproduces them well. The pion yield ratio pi^-/pi+ at a RHIC energy, Au+Au 100+100 GeV/nucleon, is also predicted.
The sensitivity of dilepton production in elementary reactions of photons and pions with nuclei on in-medium changes of hadronic properties is studied. It is shown that this sensitivity is comparable to that encountered in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is also shown how a significant broadening of the mesons affects other photonuclear processes.
We extend our approach to incorporate the proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force into the three-nucleon (3N) momentum-space Faddeev calculations of elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering and breakup to the case when also a three-nucleon force (3NF) is acting. In addition we formulate that approach in the application to electron- and gamma-induced reactions on 3He. The main new ingredient is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by a numerical solution of a 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE). The resulting equations have the same structure as the Faddeev equations which …
The hadronic properties of the pionium ion (Coulomb bound system of three charged pions) are estimated using the results for the positronium ion $P{s}^{-}$. It turns out that the hadronic shift of the ground state energy and the lifetime of the pionium ion are approximately the same as for pionium.
Using effective field theory for a proton and antiproton bound in a Coulomb potential, the shift of the ground state energy level is calculated to arbitrary order in the scattering length. Including the next order contact interaction, the correction due to the effective range parameter can also be obtained.
The present and future prospects of intermediate-energy semileptonic neutral current studies are reviewed. Possibilities for using neutrino and parity-violating electron scattering from nucleons and nuclei to study hadron structure and nuclear dynamics are emphasized, with particular attention paid to probes of the nucleon's strangeness content. Connections are drawn between such studies and tests of electroweak gauge theory using electron or neutrino scattering. Outstanding theoretical issues in the interpretation of semileptonic neutral current measurements are highlighted, and the prospects…
The freeze-out of hot and dense hadronic matter formed in relativistic nuclear collisions is probed by HBT interferometry of identical pions, kaons, etc. Coulomb repulsion/attraction of positive/negative particles show up at small particle momenta and is also very sensitive to the freeze-out conditions. The source sizes and times freeze-out are extracted from $π^-/π^+$ spectra and HBT radii and compared.
Using a recently developed effective field theory for the interactions of nucleons at non-relativistic energies, we calculate non-perturbatively Coulomb corrections to proton-proton scattering. Including the dimension-eight derivative interaction in the PDS regularization scheme, we recover a modified form of the Blatt-Jackson relation between the scattering lengths. The effective range receives no corrections from the Coulomb interactions to this order. Also the case of scattering in channels where the Coulomb force is attractive, is considered. This is of importance for hadronic atoms.
The drag and diffusion coefficients of a hot hadronic medium consisting of pions, kaons and eta using open beauty mesons as a probe have been evaluated. The interaction of the probe with the hadronic matter has been treated in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. It is observed that the magnitude of both the transport coefficients are significant, indicating substantial amount of interaction of the heavy mesons with the thermal bath. The results may have significant impact on the experimental observables like the suppression of single electron spectra originating from the decays of hea…
Recent progress in the field of meson production in hadron collisions is presented. Special emphasis is put new developments in the application of effective field theory methods to pion production, but also theoretical concepts for two-pion, eta, and vector-meson production will be presented.
The purpose of this contribution is to stress the great importance of polarization observables for the study of nucleon resonances, in particular in the case of deuteron and proton probes. Polarization observables play a unique role in signing the reaction mechanism and bring new information in the microscopic description of baryon resonances. We will calculate the relevant polarization observables, for $p+d$- and $p+α$-collisions, in case of inclusive reactions and for some selected exclusive channels.
We present an overview of a fully covariant formulation of describing the hypernuclear production with hadronic and electromagnetic probes. This theory is based on an effective Lagrangian picture and it focuses on production amplitudes that are described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of N*(1650), N*(1710) and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial collision of the projectile with one of the target nucleons. The bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentia…
The effects of retardation in the Coulomb excitation of radioactive nuclei in intermediate energy collisions (Elab ~100 MeV/nucleon) are investigated. We show that the excitation cross sections of low-lying states in 11Be, {38,40,42}S and {44,46}Ar projectiles incident on gold and lead targets are modified by as much as 20% due to these effects. The angular distributions of decaying gamma-rays are also appreciably modified.
The formalism of photon and dilepton productions in a thermal bath are discussed in the frame work of finite temperature field theory. The emission rate has been expressed in terms of the discontinuities or imaginary part of the photon self energy in the thermal bath. The photon and dilepton emissions have been computed by taking into account the in-medium modifications of the particles appearing in the internal loop of the self energy diagram using a phenomenological effective lagrangian approach. The results has been compared with the photon spectra measured by WA 98 collaboration at CERN SP…
The hyperon-hyperon potentials due to a recent SU(3) Nijmegen soft-core potential model are incorporated within a relativistic mean field calculation of strange hadronic matter. We find considerably higher binding energy in bulk matter compared to several recent calculations which constrain the composition of matter. For small strangeness fractions, matter is dominated by a composition of nucleons, Lambdas, and Xis, and the calculated binding energy closely follows that calculated by using the hyperon potentials of our previous calculations. For larger strangeness fractions, the calculated bin…
We study $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch (cSYM) by using its Type IIB supergravity dual. We compute the transport coefficients, and hard probe parameters of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ cSYM at finite temperature $T$. We use the rotating black 3-brane solution of Type IIB supergravity with a single non-zero rotation parameter $r_{0}$ after analytically continuing $r_{0}\rightarrow -ir_{0}$, and in an ensemble where the Hawking temperature $T$ and a scalar condensate $<\mathcal{O}>\sim r_{0}^4$ are held fixed. We find that the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio of the …
We evaluate the drag and diffusion coefficients of a hot hadronic medium consisting of pions, nucleons, kaons and eta using open charm mesons as a probe. The interaction of the probe with the hadronic matter has been treated in the framework of effective field theory. It is observed that the magnitude of both the transport coefficients are significant, indicating substantial amount of interaction of the heavy mesons with the thermal hadronic system. The results may have noticeable impact on the experimental observable like the suppression of single electron spectra originating form the decays …
The anomaly in Coulomb energy differences (CED) between the isospin T=1 states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 70Br and the analogue states in its even-even partner 70Se has remained a puzzle. This is a direct manifestation of isospin-symmetry breaking in effective nuclear interactions. Here, we perform large-scale shell-model calculations for nuclei with A=66-78 using the new filter diagonalization method based on the Sakurai-Sugiura algorithm. The calculations reproduce well the experimental CED. The observed negative CED for A=70 are accounted for by the cross-shell neutron excitations from the …
It is argued that an irregularity in the baryon stopping is a natural consequence of a phase transition occurring in the compression stage of a nuclear collision. It is a combined effect of the softest point inherent in an equation of state (EoS) with a phase transition and a change in the nonequilibrium dynamics from hadronic to partonic transport. Thus, this irregularity is a signal from a hot and dense stage of the nuclear collision. In order to illustrate this proposition, calculations within the three-fluid model were performed with three different EoS's: a purely hadronic EoS, an EoS wit…
There must be Coulomb bound states of a pair of hadrons, which are stable against the strong interaction, with opposite electric charges. Such bound states are hadronic atoms. We study the properties and the production of the ground-state $D^+D^-$ hadronic atom $A_{D^+D^-}$, called dionium, with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{++}$. Using a nonrelativistic effective field theory for the $D^0\bar{D}^0$-$D^+D^-$ coupled-channel system, the mass of the ground-state dionium is predicted to be $(3739.3 \pm 0.1)~\text{MeV}$, with the binding energy reduced by about 10% compared to the Coulomb binding ene…
In this paper we investigate the photoproduction of QED bound states in proton -- proton, proton -- nucleus and nucleus -- nucleus collisions at RHIC, LHC and FCC energies considering an accurate treatment of the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. The total cross sections for the production of singlet and triplet $(l^+ l^-)$ states, with $l = e,\, μ, \, τ$, are estimated and a detailed analysis of the photoproduction of singlet QED bound states is performed considering the rapidity ranges covered by central and forward detectors. The impact of the Coulomb corrections on th…
We establish the extent to which photons and dileptons are penetrating probes of hot hadronic matter by computing mean free paths. Absorption is indeed negligible for real photons as mean free paths are roughly tenths of \AAngströms. However, vector dominance effects, which provide rich structure in virtual photon mass spectra, introduce nonnegligible reabsorption and rehadronization resulting in mean free paths of the order of tens of femtometers. Consequences are illustrated by considering the net dilepton yield near the rho peak via thermal ππannihilation from a short-lived hadronic firebal…
In agreement with the gravitational-wave events which are constantly increasing, new aspects of the internal structure of compact stars have come to light. A scenario in which a first order transition takes place inside these stars is of particular interest as it can lead, under conditions, to a third gravitationally stable branch (besides white dwarfs and neutron stars). This is known as the twin star scenario. The new branch yields stars with the same mass as normal compact stars but quite different radii. In the current work, we focus on hybrid stars undergone a hadron to quark phase transi…
Pseudoscalar mesons can be produced and studied in high-energy electron-nucleus scattering. We review and extend our previous analysis of meson production in the nuclear Coulomb field. The $P\rightarrow γγ$ decay rates are most directly determined for mesons produced in the double-Coulomb region where both photons are nearly real, and provided the background-hadronic contribution remains small. The larger the mass of the meson the higher the electron energy needed to assure such a condition.
Elliptic flow (v_2) of ϕ-meson is shown to be a sensitive probe of the partonic collectivity using A Multi Phase Transport (AMPT) model. Within the ambit of the AMPT model with partonic interactions (string melting version), the ϕ-meson v_2 at midrapidity is found to have negligible contribution from hadronic interactions for Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. Changing the hadron cascade time in the model calculations does not change the ϕ-meson v_2, while it reduces the v_2 of proton at low transverse momentum (pT). These observations indicate that a substantial reduction in ϕ-mesons v_…
One of the open questions of the strong interaction theory is the existence of the Odderon, which is an unambiguous prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics, but still not confirmed experimentally. An alternative to probe the Odderon is the exclusive $η_c$ photoproduction in hadronic collisions. As the Pomeron exchange cannot contribute to this process, its observation would indicate the existence of the Odderon. In this paper we estimate the $η_c$ production in photon - induced interactions in hadronic collisions at the AFTER@LHC experiment. We demonstrate that the experimental analysis of this p…
Using 3+1D viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, we show that electromagnetic probes are sensitive to the initial conditions and to the out-of-equilibrium features of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Within the same approach, we find that hadronic observables show a much lesser sensitivity to these aspects. We conclude that electromagnetic observables allow access to dynamical regions that are beyond the reach of soft hadronic probes.
The exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in proton-proton and proton - nucleus collisions at LHC energies is investigated using the color dipole formalism and considering different models for the $Υ$ wave function and forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to update the color dipole predictions and estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in these predictions. We present predictions for the kinematical ranges probed by the ALICE, CMS and LHCb Collaborations.
We investigate how the possible existence of hadronic bound states above the deconfinement transition temperature $T_c$ affects heavy-quark observables like the nuclear modification factor, the elliptic flow and azimuthal correlations. Lattice QCD calculations suggest that above $T_c$ the effective degrees of freedom might not be exclusively partonic but that a certain fraction of hadronic degrees of freedom might already form at higher temperatures. This is an interesting questions by itself but also has a strong influence on other probes of the strongly interacting matter produced in ultrare…
Recent theoretical developments concerning radiation of electromagnetic and weak probes in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is overviewed. These proceedings focus on electromagnetic probes and briefly cover weak probes. An outlook regarding the future use of electromagnetic probes is formulated whereby a quantitative Bayesian comparison, simultaneously employing electromagnetic and hadronic calculations of experimental observables against data, is highlighted as a path towards a better understanding of the properties of the QCD medium.
The penetrating nature of electromagnetic probes makes them an ideal candidate to study properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). A selection of recent developments in the theory and phenomenology of electromagnetic probes is discussed, with an emphasis given towards how these probes can be used to constrain QGP trapnsport coefficients. A Bayesian treatment of electromagnetic radiation, similar to the one of soft hadronic observables and jets, is suggested as a path towards imposing more stringent constraints on various transport coefficients of the QCD medium.
The medium modification of vector meson properties and its effects on thermal photon and dilepton emission rates from hot/dense hadronic matter are discussed. The role of spectral changes of hadrons in explaining the WA98 photon data and the CERES/NA45 dilepton data with similar initial conditions is demonstrated.
The $X(3872)$, whose mass coincides with the $D^0\bar D^{*0}$ threshold, is the most extended hadron object. Since its discovery in 2003, debates have never stopped regarding its internal structure. We propose a new object, the $X$ atom, which is the $D^\pm D^{*\mp}$ composite system with positive charge parity and a mass of $(3879.89\pm0.07)$ MeV, formed mainly due to the Coulomb force. We show that a null signal of the $X$ atom can be used to put a lower limit on the binding energy of the $X(3872)$. From the current knowledge of the $X(3872)$ properties, the production rate for the $X$ atom …
Using a partonic transport model based on the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and a relativistic hadronic transport model to describe, respectively, the evolution of the initial partonic and the final hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions at energies carried out in the Beam-Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we have studied the effects of both the partonic and hadronic mean-field potentials on the elliptic flow of particles relative to that of their antiparticles. We find that to reproduce the measured relative elliptic flow differences between nucleons and antinucl…
The use of statistical fluctuations as probes of the microscopic dynamics of hot and dense hadronic matter is reviewed. Critical fluctuations near the critical point of QCD matter are predicted to enhance fluctuations in pionic observables. Chemical fluctuations, especially those of locally conserved quantum numbers, such as electric charge and baryon number, can probe the nature of the carriers of these quantum numbers in the dense medium.
We study the finite-size effects, like the surface and Coulomb energies, on the hadron-quark mixed phase in neutron stars. The equilibrium conditions for coexisting hadronic and quark phases are derived by minimizing the total energy including the surface and Coulomb contributions, which are different from the Gibbs conditions without finite-size effects. We employ the relativistic mean-field model to describe the hadronic phase, while the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with vector interactions is used for the quark phase. It is found that finite-size effects can significantly reduce the region of t…
We study the hadronic effects on the $cc\bar{q}\bar{q}$ tetraquark state by focusing on the $T_{cc}(1^+)$ meson during the hadronic stage of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We evaluate the absorption cross section of the $T_{cc}$ meson by pions in the quasi-free approximation, and investigate the time evolution of the $T_{cc}$ abundance in the hadronic medium based on the effective volume and temperature of the hadronic phase at both RHIC and LHC modelled by hydrodynamic calculations with the lattice equation of state. We probe two possible scenarios for the structure of $T_{cc}$, where it …
