We use a combination of new AAOmega multi-object wide-field spectroscopic observations and literature data to define 111 spectroscopically confirmed members of the massive NGC 5044 group with M_B <= -13.5 mag, providing a three-fold increase in group members over previous analyses of this group. We find the group to have a dynamical mass of 9.2 x 10^13 solar masses, placing it on the border between rich groups and poor clusters. However, comparison to the L_x-sigma and L_x-mass relations shows it more closely follows cluster scaling relations. Using a combination of crossing time, X-ray contours and line-of-sight velocity profile we are able to preclude growth of the NGC 5044 group via major sub-group mergers within the last ~1 Gyr. While the majority of dynamical indicators for the group suggest it is virialised, we find evidence for a small, dynamically distinct sub-group at 1.4 Mpc from the group centre, suggesting that the NGC 5044 group is the dominant structure in its local environment, and is currently accreting smaller groups.
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to image the neutral hydrogen in the merging system NGC 3256, to test the idea that globular clusters (GC) form during the interactions and mergers of disk galaxies. We compare our observations with hydrodynamical numerical simulations, from the literature, to examine the hypothesis that the H I fragments with masses greater than 10$^{7\pm1} \mo$ are sites of GC formation. We appear to have detected detached H I fragments in the vicinity of NGC 3256. These fragments, with masses ~10^7 solar masses, may have little dark matter content which is …
Absolute proper motions, their corresponding errors and membership probabilities of 501 stars in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC2548 region are determined from MAMA measurements of 10 photographic plates. The plates have the maximum epoch difference of 82 years and they were taken with the double astrograph at Zo-Se station of Shanghai Observatory, which has an aperture of 40 cm and a plate scale of 30"/mm. The average proper motion precision is 1.18 mas/yr. These proper motions are used to determine the membership probabilities of stars in the region. The number of stars with membership…
We have calculated proper motions and re-evaluated the membership probabilities of 810 stars in the area of two NGC objects, NGC 1817 and NGC 1807. We have obtained absolute proper motions from 25 plates in the reference system of the Tycho-2 Catalogue. The plates have a maximum epoch difference of 81 years; and they were taken with the double astrograph at Zo-Se station of Shanghai Observatory, which has an aperture of 40 cm and a plate scale of 30 arcsec/mm. The average proper motion precision is 1.55 mas/yr. These proper motions are used to determine the membership probabilities of stars in…
Low resolution spectra of 23 stars towards the bulge globular clusters NGC 6528 and NGC 6553 are analysed. Radial velocities and atmospheric parameters are derived in order to check their membership in the clusters. Effective temperatures were obtained from photometric data for stars with Teff > 3800 K, whereas for cooler stars, they were derived from equivalent widths of TiO bands. Calibrations of W(TiO) as a function of stellar parameters based on a grid of synthetic spectra are presented. Metallicities were derived from a comparison of the observed spectra to a grid of synthetic spectra. Th…
We present techniques for obtaining presision astrometry using old photographic plates from assorted large-aperture reflectors in combination with recent CCD Mosaic Imager frames. At the core of this approach is a transformation of plate/CCD coordinates into a previously constructed astrometric reference frame around the open cluster NGC 188. Our primary result is a new catalog of proper motions and positions for 7812 objects down to V=21 in the 0.75 square degree area around NGC 188. The precision for well-measured stars is 0.15 mas/yr for proper motions and 2 mas for positions on the system …
The results of astrometric and photometric investigations of the open cluster NGC 7243 are presented. Proper motions of 2165 stars with root-mean-square error of 1.1 mas/yr were obtained by means of PDS scanning of astrometric plates covering the time interval of 97 years. A total of 211 cluster members down to V=15.5 mag have been identified. V and B magnitudes have been determined for 2118 and 2110 stars respectively. Estimations of mass (348Mo < M < 522Mo), age (t=2.5x10^8 yr), distance (r=698 pc) and reddening (E(B-V)=0.24) of the cluster NGC 7243 have been made.
We present new radial velocity measurements of 586 stars in a one-degree field centered on the open cluster M46, and the planetary nebula NGC 2438 located within a nuclear radius of the cluster. The data are based on medium-resolution optical and near-infrared spectra taken with the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We find a velocity difference of about 30 km/s between the cluster and the nebula, thus removing all ambiguities about the cluster membership of the planetary nebula caused by contradicting results in the literature. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion of th…
The Spitzer Space Telescope was used to study the mid-infrared to far-infrared properties of NGC 300, and to compare dust emission to Halpha to elucidate the heating of the ISM and the star formation cycle at scales < 100 pc. The new data allow us to discern clear differences in the spatial distribution of 8 micron dust emission with respect to 24 micron dust and to HII regions traced by the Halpha light. The 8 micron emission highlights the rims of HII regions, and the 24 micron emission is more strongly peaked in star forming regions than at 8 microns. We confirm the existence and approximat…
Relative proper motions and cluster membership probabilities of 30 stars within an area of 14' of diameter centered in the open cluster NGC1662 (α=04^{\rm h}48^{\rm m}, δ=+10^{\rm o}56') are determined by combining positions of stars observed by the Valinhos CCD meridian circle with those from other astrometric catalogues. Our basic source for first epoch of stars brighter than B=13 magnitudes is the AC2000 Catalogue, which provides a time baseline of about 90 years, whereas the USNO-A2.0 Catalogue is used for fainter stars, providing a time baseline of about 40 years in this region. Average a…
The Garching-Bonn Deep Survey (GaBoDS) is a virtual 12 square degree cosmic shear and cluster lensing survey, conducted with the WFI@2.2m MPG/ESO telescope at La Silla. It consists of shallow, medium and deep random fields taken in R-band in subarcsecond seeing conditions at high galactic latitude. A substantial amount of the data was taken from the ESO archive, by means of a dedicated ASTROVIRTEL program. In the present work we describe the main characteristics and scientific goals of GaBoDS. Our strategy for mining the ESO data archive is introduced, and we comment on the Wide Field Imager d…
Deep CCD photometry in the uvby-Hbeta intermediate-band system is presented for the cluster NGC 2548 (M 48). A complete membership analysis based on astrometric and photometric criteria is applied. The photometric analysis of a selected sample of stars yields a reddening value of E(b-y)=0.06\pm0.03, a distance modulus of V_0-M_V=9.3\pm0.5 (725 pc) and a metallicity of [Fe/H]= -0.24\pm0.27. Through isochrone fitting we find an age of log t = 8.6\pm0.1 (400 Myr). Our optical photometry and JHK from 2MASS are combined to derive effective temperatures of cluster member stars. The effective tempera…
We have measured the absolute proper motions of four low-latitude, inner-Galaxy globular clusters. These clusters are: NGC 6266 (M62), NGC 6304, NGC 6316 and NGC 6723. The proper motions are on the Hipparcos system, as no background extragalactic objects are found in these high-extinction regions. The proper-motion uncertainties range between 0.3 and 0.6 mas/yr. We discuss the kinematics of these clusters and of three additional bulge clusters -- NGC 6522, NGC 6528 and NFC 6553 -- whose proper motions with respect to bulge stars had been determined previously. We find that all of the clusters …
Following deep astrometric and photometric study of the cluster NGC2682 (M67), we are able to accurately determine its fundamental parameters. Being an old and rich cluster, M67 is a relevant object for the analysis of the Galactic disk evolution. M67 is well studied but the lack of a wide and deep Stromgren photometric study makes our results worthwhile. The brightest stars of the open cluster M67 were used as uvby-Hbeta standard stars in our studies of NGC1817 and NGC2548, and the extension of the field covered, as well as the amount of observations, allowed to obtain the best set of Stromgr…
We present deep HST ACS/WFC photometry of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569, one of the closest and strongest nearby starburst galaxies. These data allow us, for the first time, to unequivocally detect the tip of the red giant branch and thereby determine the distance to NGC 1569. We find that this galaxy is 3.36 +/- 0.20 Mpc away, considerably farther away than the typically assumed distance of 2.2 +/- 0.6 Mpc. Previously thought to be an isolated galaxy due to its shorter distance, our new distance firmly establishes NGC 1569 as a member of the IC 342 group of galaxies. The higher density …
We present the results of a 0.86 square degree CCD photometric survey of the open cluster NGC 2516, which has an age of about 150 Myr and may have a much lower metallicity than the similarly-aged Pleiades. We select a preliminary catalogue of 1254 low mass (between 0.2 and 2.0M_{sun}) cluster candidates, of which about 70--80 percent are expected to be genuine. The mass function is metallicity dependent, but consistent with a Salpeter-like law (dN/dlog M ~ M^{-alpha}, alpha=+1.47+/-0.11 or alpha=+1.67+/-0.11 for solar and half-solar metallicities) between 0.7 and 3.0M_{sun}. At lower masses (b…
We present new H-band echelle spectra, obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, for the massive star cluster "B" in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569. From spectral synthesis and equivalent width measurements we obtain abundances and abundance patterns. We derive an Fe abundance of [Fe/H]=-0.63+/-0.08, a super-solar [alpha/Fe] abundance ratio of +0.31+/-0.09, and an O abundance of [O/H]=-0.29+/-0.07. We also measure a low 12C/13C = 5+/-1 isotopic ratio. Using archival imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board HST, we construct a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) for…
We report on a new, wide field ($20^{\prime} \times 20^{\prime}$), multicolor ($UBVI$), photometric campaign in the area of the nearby old open cluster NGC 2112. At the same time, we provide medium-resolution spectroscopy of 35 (and high-resolution of additional 5) Red Giant and Turn Off stars. This material is analyzed with the aim to update the fundamental parameters of this traditionally difficult cluster, which is very sparse and suffers from heavy field star contamination. Among the 40 stars with spectra, we identified 21 {\it bona fide} radial velocity members which allow us to put more …
We present spectroscopic observations of candidate F, G and K type stars in NGC 6633, an open cluster with a similar age to the Hyades. We identify 10 new cluster members including one short period binary system. Combining this survey with that of Jeffries (1997), we identify a total of 30 solar-type members. We have used the F and early G stars to spectroscopically estimate [Fe/H]=-0.096+/-0.081 for NGC 6633 and with more precision that NGC 6633 has (0.074+/-0.041) dex less iron than the Pleiades and (0.206+/-0.040) dex less iron than the Hyades. Lithium abundances have been estimated for the…
We present the first high-resolution study of the disk-halo interface in an edge-on galaxy (NGC 5775) in which every component of the interstellar medium is represented and resolved. New single-dish CO J=2-1 and CO J=1-0 data, ROSAT X-ray data, and HIRES IRAS data are presented along with HI data which emphasizes the high latitude features. In conjunction with previously published radio continuum (6 and 20 cm) and H alpha data, we find spatial correlations between various ISM components in that all components of the ISM are present in the disk-halo features (except for CO for which there is in…
We present photometric and spectroscopic studies of the white dwarf (WD) populations in the intermediate-age open clusters NGC 6633 and NGC 7063 as part of the ongoing Lick-Arizona White Dwarf Survey (LAWDS). Using wide-field CCD imaging, we locate 41 candidate WDs in the two cluster fields: 32 in NGC 6633, and 9 in NGC 7063. Spectroscopic observations confirm 13 of these candidates to be bona-fide WDs. We describe in detail our Balmer line fitting technique for deriving effective temperatures and surface gravities from optical DA WD spectra and apply the technique to the 11 DA WDs in the samp…
WFPC2 images obtained with the Hubble Space telescope 4.16 years apart have allowed us to measure the proper motion of the metal rich globular cluster NGC 6553 with respect to the background bulge stars. With a space velocity of ($Π, Θ, W$) = (-3.5, 230, -3) km s$^{-1}$, NGC 6553 follows the mean rotation of both disk and bulge stars at a Galactocentric distance of 2.7 kpc. While the kinematics of the cluster is consistent with either a bulge or a disk membership, the virtual identity of its stellar population with that of the bulge cluster NGC6528 makes its bulge membership more likely. The a…
We analyze a deep, 100 ksec long, Chandra ACIS observation of NGC2264. We detect 420 sources, 85% of which are associated with known optical and NIR counterparts. More than 90% of these counterparts are NGC2264 members, thus significantly increasing the known low mass cluster population by about 100 objects. Among the sources without counterpart, ~50% are likely members, several of which we expect to be previously unknown protostellar objects. We confirm several previous findings on the X-ray activity of low mass PMS stars: X-ray luminosity is related to stellar mass, although with a large sca…
From uvby photometry of 75 stars in the direction of NGC 7063 we were able to determine membership of some stars and fix the distance (722 +- 105 pc), log age (of 8.146) and reddening (E(b-y) = 0.091 +- 0.039 mag) for the cluster.
NGC 4815 is a distant and populous open cluster, which lies in the galactic plane in a region of strong absorption. As a consequence, its membership, spatial distribution and luminosity function are not well determined. In this paper, we present an algorithm which uses both positional and photometric data simultaneously to search for open cluster members. The contribution of the field stars is estimated by our Galaxy model software. The method has been developed for deep CCD photometric observations, but it can also be used to investigate the membership in an n-dimensional space, including pro…
Using deep exposures (~10^5 s) with the ROSAT HRI, we have performed flux-limited surveys for X-ray sources in the vicinity of the Hyades-age open stellar clusters NGC 6633 and IC 4756, detecting 31 and 13 sources respectively. Our primary aim is to search for so-far unrecognised cluster members. We propose identifications or classifications (cluster member, field star, extragalactic field object) for the X-ray sources, based on published membership lists, and on X-ray:optical flux ratios and optical colour--magnitude diagrams. Results of simulating the expected X-ray-emitting source populatio…
We present CCD photometry and proper motion studies of the two open star clusters NGC 1960 (M 36) and NGC 2194. Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagrams, for NGC 1960 we found an age of t=16 Myr and a distance of roughly d=1300 pc and for NGC 2194 t=550 Myr and d=2900 pc, respectively. We combined membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the initial mass function of the clusters and found slopes of Gamma=-1.23 +/- 0.17 for NGC 1960 and Gamma=-1.33 +/- 0.29 for NGC 2194. Compared to other IMF studies of the intermediate mass range, t…
Aims: This work presents a high--precision variability survey in the field of the old, super metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791. Methods: The data sample consists of more than 75,000 high-precision CCD time series measurements in the V band obtained mainly at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, with additional data from S. Pedro Martir and Loiano observatories, over a time span of ten nights. The field covers an area of 42x28 arcmin^2. Results: We have discovered 260 new variables and re-determined periods and amplitudes of 70 known variable stars. By means of a photometric evaluation of the mem…
We conduct a photometric and spectroscopic survey of a 10 sq. deg. region surrounding the nearby NGC 5846 group of galaxies, using the Canada-France-Hawaii and Keck I telescopes to study the population of dwarf galaxies as faint as M_R=-10. Candidates are identified on the basis of quantitative surface brightness and qualitative morphological criteria. Spectroscopic follow up and a spatial correlation analysis provide the basis for affirming group memberships. Altogether, 324 candidates are identified and 83 have spectroscopic membership confirmation. We argue on statistical grounds that a tot…
Old open clusters are very useful targets to investigate mechanisms responsible for lithium (Li) depletion during the main sequence. Comparison of the Li abundances in clusters of different age allows us to understand the efficiency of the Li destruction process. Our goal is the determination of membership and Li abundance in a sample of candidate members of the open cluster NGC 3960 (age ~1 Gyr), with the aim to fill the gap between 0.6 and 2 Gyr in the empirical description of the behavior of the average Li abundance as a function of the stellar age. We use VLT/FLAMES Giraffe spectra to dete…
BVI photometry (from South Africa Astron. Obs.), Echelle high resolution spectroscopy and AFOSC integral field spectroscopy (from Asiago, Italy) of the young open cluster NGC 6604 are presented. Age, distance, reddening, membership, radial and rotational velocities are derived and discussed. An age of 5 million years, a distance of 1.7 kpc and a reddening E(B-V)=1.02 are found. The cluster radial velocity is in agreement with the Hron (1987) model for the Galaxy disk rotation. Pre-ZAMS objects are not present down to M_V = +1.5 mag.
We present CCD photometry and a proper motion study of the young open star cluster, NGC 581 (M 103). Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagram, we found an age of 16 +/- 4 Myr and a distance of roughly 3 kpc for this cluster. The proper motion study identifies 77 stars of V=14.5 mag or brighter to be cluster members. We combine membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the IMF of the cluster and find a quite steep slope of Gamma=-1.80.
We present CCD UBVI observations obtained in the field of the previously unstudied northern open clusters NGC 133 and NGC 1348. We argue that NGC 133 is a heavily contaminated cluster, for which we identify 13 candidate members down to $V$=14.50 mag on the basis of the position in the two-color Diagram . Membership has been checked against proper motions from Tycho~2, whenever available. The cluster turns out to have a reddening E$(B-V)=0.60\pm0.10$ mag, to be $630\pm150$ pc distant from the Sun, and to have an age less than 10 Myrs. NGC 1348 is a more reddened cluster (E$(B-V)=0.85\pm0.15$ ma…
We report ISO (Infrared Space Observatory) observations of a new infrared source discovered in the vicinity of the young populous cluster NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The object was observed with ISOCAM at 4.5, 6.75 and 11.5 $μ$m and shows a prominent mid-infrared excess, indicating the presence of a dust shell. The available observations of the optical counterpart together with the mid-infrared ISOCAM data suggest that this object is most likely a post-AGB star, or a Be supergiant. Cluster membership and candidate evolutionary scenarios are discussed briefly.
We present CCD photometry and proper motion studies of the three open star clusters NGC 4103, NGC 5281, and NGC 4755 (kappa Cru). By fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagrams, we found that all three objects are young open star clusters with ages of at most t=45 Myr. They are located at distances from approx. 1600 pc to 2200 pc, derived from distance moduli (m-M)_0 ranging from 11 mag to 12 mag. We combined membership determinations based on proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the initial mass function (IMF) of the clusters. The shape of the IMFs could be …
Mechanisms regulating the evolution of pre-main sequence stars can be understood by studying stellar properties such as rotation, disk accretion, internal mixing and binarity. To investigate such properties, we studied a sample of 332 candidate members of the massive and populous star forming region NGC 6530. We want to select cluster members by using different membership criteria,to study the properties of pre-main sequence stars with or without circumstellar disks. We use intermediate resolution spectra including the Li I 6707.8 Angstroms line to derive radial and rotational velocities, bina…
The $13.6\times 13.6$ arcmin$^{2}$ field covering the central part of the globular cluster NGC~6397 was surveyed in a search for short-period variable stars. We obtained light curves for 6 close binaries, 2 SX~Phe stars and 1 RR~Lyrae variable, 7 of which are new discoveries. Both identified SX~Phe variables are likely members of the cluster. One of the identified eclipsing binaries is most probably a field star while for the remaining 5 binaries our data do not preclude cluster membership. A $V$ vs. $B-V$ color-magnitude diagram extending from the tip of the red giant branch to below the main…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the white dwarf population of the populous, intermediate-age open cluster M35 (NGC 2168); this study expands upon our previous study of the white dwarfs in this cluster. We spectroscopically confirm 14 white dwarfs in the field of the cluster: 12 DAs, 1 hot DQ, and 1 DB star. For each DA, we determine the white dwarf mass and cooling age, from which we derive the each star's progenitor mass. These data are then added to the empirical initial-final mass relation (IFMR), where the M35 WDs contribute significantly to the high-mass end of the rel…
Two sets of archive time series observations of an old open cluster NGC 6791 were re-analysed using an image subtraction technique. We report identification of four new variables. Proper motion data are available for three of them and indicate that they are likely cluster members. Photometry of these stars is discussed along with the data for two earlier identified variables. The sample analysed includes one yellow and three red stragglers. An eclipsing red straggler V9 is of particular interest. Cluster membership of this RS Cvn type binary would imply that its cooler component is in a stage …
The high-resolution setup of the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope makes it a beautiful radial velocity machine, with which one can measure velocities of up to 350-360 stars per exposure to +/-1--2 km/s in a 2-degree field of view. Here we present three case studies of star cluster kinematics, each based on data obtained on three nights in February 2008. The specific aims included: (i) cluster membership determination for NGC 2451A and B, two nearby open clusters in the same line-of-sight; (ii) a study of possible membership of the planetary nebula NGC 2438 in the open clu…
We study the disk and accretion properties of young stars in the NGC 2068 and NGC 2071 clusters. Using low-resolution optical spectra, we define a membership sample and determine an age for the region of ~2 Myr. Using high-resolution spectra of the H-alpha line we study the accretion activity of these likely members and also examine the disk properties of the likely members using IRAC and MIPS mid-infrared photometry. A substantial fraction (79%) of the 67 members have an infrared excess while all of the stars with significant infrared excess show evidence for active accretion. We find three p…
Exploiting a five-year span of data, we present improved timing solutions for the five millisecond pulsars known in the globular cluster NGC 6752. They include proper motion determinations for the two outermost pulsars in the cluster, PSR J1910-5959A and PSR J1910-5959C. The values of the proper motions are in agreement with each other within current uncertainties, but do not match (at 4 sigma and 2 sigma level respectively) with the value of the proper motion of the entire globular cluster derived in the optical band. Implications of these results for the cluster membership of the two pulsars…
We have redefined group membership of six southern galaxy groups in the local universe (mean cz < 2000 km/s) based on new redshift measurements from our recently acquired Anglo-Australian Telescope 2dF spectra. For each group, we investigate member galaxy kinematics, substructure, luminosity functions and luminosity-weighted dynamics. Our calculations confirm that the group sizes, virial masses and luminosities cover the range expected for galaxy groups, except that the luminosity of NGC 4038 is boosted by the central starburst merger pair. We find that a combination of kinematical, substructu…
We derive the proper motions, membership probabilities, and velocity dispersions of stars in the regions of the young (about 2-4 Myr-old) open clusters NGC 2244 (the central cluster in the Monoceros R2 association) and NGC 6530 (the dominant cluster in the Sgr OB1 association) from photographic plate material obtained at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, with time baselines of 34 and 87 years, respectively. Both clusters show clear evidence of mass segregation, but they do not exhibit any significant velocity-mass (or, equivalently, a velocity-luminosity) dependence. This provides strong supp…
We consider the possibility of cluster membership for 13 planetary nebulae that are located in close proximity to open clusters lying in their lines of sight. The short lifetimes and low sample size of intermediate-mass planetary nebulae with respect to nearby open clusters conspire to reduce the probability of observing a true association. Not surprisingly, line of sight coincidences almost certainly exist for 7 of the 13 cases considered. Additional studies are advocated, however, for 6 planetary nebula/open cluster coincidences in which a physical association is not excluded by the availabl…
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx=7e30 erg/s (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3-7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and identify optical counterparts to seven X-ray sources out of the nine sources within the HST field-of-view. Based on the X-ray and optical properties, we find 2-5 candidates of cataclysmic variables (CVs) or ch…
We report new photometry for the cluster NGC 2121 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which shows a prominent hydrogen core exhaustion gap at the turnoff, and a descending subgiant branch remniscent of Galactic open clusters. We achieve an excellent fit using the Girardi isochrones, finding an age of 3.2 +/- 0.5Gyr, with [Fe/H]=-0.6 +/- 0.2. The isochrones fit the color and shape of the turnoff and subgiant branch so precisely that we constrain the metallicity as well as the age. The smae isochrones also fit SL 663 and NGC 2155, although our photometry for these clusters has much larger errors. We …
We present evidence for a new morphologically defined form of small-scale substructure in the Coma Cluster, which we call galaxy aggregates. These aggregates are dominated by a central galaxy, which is on average three magnitudes brighter than the smaller aggregate members nearly all of which lie to one side of the central galaxy. We have found three such galaxy aggregates dominated by the S0 galaxies RB 55, RB 60, and the star-bursting SBb, NGC 4858. RB 55 and RB 60 are both equi-distant between the two dominate D galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889, while NGC 4858 is located next to the larger E0…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the optical companion to the millisecond radio pulsar PSR J1740-5340 in the globular cluster NGC 6397. An analysis of the photometric variability in the B, V, and I-bands indicates an inclination of the system of 43.9+-2.1 degrees if the optical companion fills its Roche lobe (a semi-detached configuration). The spectroscopic data show a radial velocity variation with a semi-amplitude of K=137.2 +- 2.4 km/sec, and a system velocity gamma=17.6 +- 1.5 km/sec, consistent with cluster membership. We use these results to derive a mass of the …
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of the Milky Way can be used to study the influence of different galactic environments on the (non-)presence of peculiarities, which has to be taken into account in stellar evolution models. Furthermore it is still unknown if the CP2 phenomenon evolves, i.e. does the strength of the peculiarity feature at 5200A, increase or decrease with age. We have observed eight young to intermediate age open clusters in the Delta a photometric system. This intermediate band photometric system samples the depth of the 5200A, flux dep…
In the present paper we present JHK photometric results of the young embedded cluster NGC 2316. We construct the cluster radial profile from which we determine a radius of 0.63 pc. We find 189 $\pm$ 29 cluster members in an extinction limited sub-sample of the survey, 22 $\pm$ 19 of which are possibly substellar. An average extinction of 4.5 visual magnitudes is derived using (H-K) colours of control fields. This extinction is due to the presence of residual parental molecular cloud. NGC 2316 presents 16% source fraction of excess emission which is consistent with other results from clusters w…
We present the first CCD photometric observations of the northern open cluster NGC 2126. Data were taken on eight nights in February and December 2002 with a total time span of ~57 hours. Almost 1000 individual V-band frames were examined to find short-period variable stars. We discovered six new variable stars, of which one is a promising candidate for an eclipsing binary with a pulsating component. Two stars were classified as delta Scuti stars and one as Algol-type eclipsing binary. Two stars are slow variables with ambiguous classification. From absolute VRI photometry we have estimated th…
Intermediate resolution spectroscopy from the ESO Very Large Telescope is analysed for 63 photometrically selected low-mass (0.08-0.30 Msun) candidates of the open cluster NGC 2547. We have confirmed membership for most of these stars using radial velocities, and found that lithium remains undepleted for cluster stars with I>17.54+/-0.14 and K_{s}>14.86+/-0.12. From these results, several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models give almost model independent ages of 34-36 Myr, with a precision of 10 per cent. These ages are only slightly larger than the ages of 25-35 (+/-5) Myr obtained using the…
Having already reported on the first photometric study of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 1883 (Carraro et al. 2003), we present in this paper the first spectroscopic multi-epoch investigation of a sample of evolved stars in the same cluster. The aim is to derive the cluster membership, velocity and metallicity, and discuss recent claims in the literature (Tadross 2005) that NGC 1883 is as metal poor as globular clusters in the Halo. Besides, being one of the few outer Galactic disk intermediate-age open clusters known so far, it is an ideal target to improve our knowledge of the Galacti…
It is still debated whether star formation process depends on environment. In particular it is yet unclear whether star formation in the outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are, theoretically, less conducive, occurs in the same way as in the inner Galaxy. We investigate the population of NGC1893, a young cluster ~3-4 Myr in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >11 Kpc), to explore the effects of environmental conditions on star forming regions. We present infrared observations acquired using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and analyze the color-color d…
Time-series CCD photometric observations of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 2099 were performed to search for variable stars. We also carried out BV photometry to study physical properties of variables in the cluster. Using V-band time-series data, we carefully examined light variations of about 12,000 stars in the range of 10 < V < 22 mag. A total of 24 variable stars have been identified; seven stars are previously known variables and 17 stars are newly identified. On the basis of observational properties such as light curve shape, period, and amplitude, we classified the new variable …
We present IZJHKL' photometry of the core of the cluster NGC 6611 in the Eagle Nebula. This photometry is used to constrain the Initial Mass Function (IMF) and the circumstellar disk frequency of the young stellar objects. Optical spectroscopy of 258 objects is used to confirm membership and constrain contamination as well as individual reddening estimates. Our overall aim is to assess the influence of the ionizing radiation from the massive stars on the formation and evolution of young low-mass stars and their disks. The disk frequency determined from the JHKL' colour-colour diagram suggests …
Relying on U,B imagery at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), we report here the discovery of a sample of 13 new UV-bright post-HB candidate stars in the field of the galactic open cluster NGC 6791. Owing to its super-solar metal content ([Fe/H]>0.2 dex) and estimated age (t> 8 Gyr), this cluster represents the nearest and ideal stellar aggregate to match the distinctive properties of the evolved stellar populations possibly ruling the UV-upturn phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and bulges of spirals. Our ongoing spectroscopic follow-up of this unique UV-bright sample will allow us…
