The high-resolution setup of the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope makes it a beautiful radial velocity machine, with which one can measure velocities of up to 350-360 stars per exposure to +/-1--2 km/s in a 2-degree field of view. Here we present three case studies of star cluster kinematics, each based on data obtained on three nights in February 2008. The specific aims included: (i) cluster membership determination for NGC 2451A and B, two nearby open clusters in the same line-of-sight; (ii) a study of possible membership of the planetary nebula NGC 2438 in the open cluster M46; and (iii) the radial velocity dispersion of M4 and NGC 6144, a pair of two globular clusters near Antares. The results which came out of only three nights of AAT time illustrate very nicely the potential of the instrument and, for example, how quickly one can resolve decades of contradiction in less than two hours of net observing time.
Using the recently commissioned multi-object spectrograph AAOmega on the 3.9m AAT we have obtained medium-resolution near-infrared spectra for 10,500 stars in and around five southern globular clusters. The targets were 47 Tuc, M12, M30, M55 and NGC 288. We have measured radial velocities to +/- 1 km/s with the cross correlation method and estimated metallicity, effective temperature, surface gra vity and rotational velocity for each star by fitting synthetic model spectra. An analysis of the velocity maps and velocity dispersion of member stars revealed systemic rotation in four of the target…
We present new radial velocity measurements of 586 stars in a one-degree field centered on the open cluster M46, and the planetary nebula NGC 2438 located within a nuclear radius of the cluster. The data are based on medium-resolution optical and near-infrared spectra taken with the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We find a velocity difference of about 30 km/s between the cluster and the nebula, thus removing all ambiguities about the cluster membership of the planetary nebula caused by contradicting results in the literature. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion of th…
We describe the `WiggleZ' spectroscopic survey of 280,000 star-forming galaxies selected from a combination of GALEX ultra-violet and SDSS + RCS2 optical imaging. The fundamental goal is a detection of the baryonic acoustic oscillations in galaxy clustering at high-redshift (0.5 < z < 1) and a precise measurement of the equation of state of dark energy from this purely geometric and robust method. The survey has already started on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope using the AAOmega spectrograph, and planned to complete during 2009. The WWW page for the survey can be found at http://astronomy…
We present new optical spectroscopy for 342 R<18 galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster obtained with the AAOmega facility at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We describe the observations and measurements of central velocity dispersion, emission line equivalent widths and absorption line indices. The distinguishing characteristic of the survey is its coverage of a very wide baseline in velocity dispersion (30-300 km/s), while achieving high signal-to-noise ratio throughout (median 60 per Ang). Significant emission at H-alpha was detected in ~20 per cent of red-sequence Shapley members. Using line…
Using the AAOmega instrument of the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have obtained medium-resolution near-infrared spectra of 10,500 stars in two-degree fields centered on the galactic globular clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 288, M12, M30 and M55. Radial velocities and equivalent widths of the infrared Ca II triplet lines have been determined to constrain cluster membership, which in turn has been used to study the angular extent of the clusters. From the analysis of 140-1000 member stars in each cluster, we do not find extended structures that go beyond the tidal radii. For three cluster we estimate a 1%…
I review the field of globular cluster system (GCS) kinematics, including a brief primer on observational methods. The kinematical structures of spiral galaxy GCSs so far appear to be broadly similar. The inferred rotation and mass profiles of elliptical galaxy halos exhibit a diversity of behaviors, requiring more systematic observational and theoretical studies.
The polarization of the CMBR scattered by galaxy clusters in the kinematic Sunyaev Zeldovich effect depends on the transverse velocity of the cluster. This polarizing effect is proportional to the transverse velocity squared, and so weaker that the change in intensity due to the radial motion in the kinematic effect. The value given by Sunyaev and Zeldovich, and which is frequently cited, underestimates the polarizing effect by a factor of ten. We show furthermore that the polarization has a strong frequency dependence. This means that the polarization should be detectable with the new generat…
We present results from an ongoing survey dedicated to the ionized gas kinematics of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies using Fabry-Perot interferometry. Our goal is to study the environmental effects on galaxy evolution in the Virgo cluster. We report here on the Halpha distribution map and velocity field of NGC 4438, the prototype of an interacting galaxy near the centre of the cluster.
We present a study of the internal kinematics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster based on integral-field spectroscopic observations with Gemini South GMOS and VLT-VIMOS. Seven galaxies in a luminosity range of -21.3 < M_B < -17.7 have been observed with these integral field units (IFU). As first results, velocity and line strength maps are presented for NGC 1427 and NGC 1419.
We present our project on galaxy evolution in the environment of distant rich clusters aiming at disentangling the importance of specific interaction and galaxy transformation processes from the hierarchical evolution of field galaxies. Spatially resolved MOS spectra were gained with VLT/FORS to analyze the internal kinematics of disk galaxies. First results are shown for the clusters MS 1008.1-1224 (z=0.30), Cl 0303+1706 (z=0.42), and Cl 0413-6559 (z=0.51). Out of 35 late type cluster members, 13 galaxies exhibit a rotation curve of the universal form rising in the inner region and passing ov…
We present CCD photometry and a proper motion study of the young open star cluster, NGC 581 (M 103). Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagram, we found an age of 16 +/- 4 Myr and a distance of roughly 3 kpc for this cluster. The proper motion study identifies 77 stars of V=14.5 mag or brighter to be cluster members. We combine membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the IMF of the cluster and find a quite steep slope of Gamma=-1.80.
We present first results from our project to examine the internal kinematics of disk galaxies in 7 rich clusters with 0.3<=z<0.6. Spatially resolved MOS spectra have been obtained with FORS at the VLT. We concentrate here on the clusters MS1008.1-1224 at z=0.30 and Cl0413-6559 (F1557.19TC) at z=0.51. Out of 22 cluster members, 12 galaxies exhibit a rotation curve of the universal form rising in the inner region and passing over into a flat part. The other members have intrinsically peculiar kinematics. The 12 cluster galaxies for which a maximum rotation velocity could be derived are distribut…
We present distance estimates for eleven peculiar Virgo cluster spiral galaxies based on measurements of the stellar kinematics of their central 2 kpc. Stellar circular velocities were obtained using two-integral dynamical models. Distances were obtained by comparing, at each radius, the stellar circular velocities with synthetic H_alpha rotation curves derived from NIR Tully-Fisher relations. The results show that most of our galaxies are located within 4 Mpc of the core of the cluster. Three of these galaxies, previously classified as "low rotator galaxies" or with "Truncated/Compact" H_alpha…
Gravitational lensing provides an efficient tool for the investigation of matter structures, independent of the dynamical or hydrostatic equilibrium properties of the deflecting system. However, it depends on the kinematic status. In fact, either a translational motion or a coherent rotation of the mass distribution can affect the lensing properties. Here, light deflection by galaxy clusters in motion is considered. Even if gravitational lensing mass measurements of galaxy clusters are regarded as very reliable estimates, the kinematic effect should be considered. A typical peculiar motion wit…
On the basis of multislit spectroscopy of 180 stars in the ionising cluster of 30 Doradus we present reliable radial velocities for 55 stars. We calculate a radial velocity dispersion of ~35 km/s for the cluster and we analyse the possible influence of spectroscopic binaries in this rather large velocity dispersion. We use numerical simulations to show that the observations are consistent with the hypothesis that all the stars in the cluster are binaries, and the total mass of the cluster is ~5E+5 solar masses. A simple test shows only marginal evidence for dynamical mass segregation which if …
We have measured the absolute proper motions of four low-latitude, inner-Galaxy globular clusters. These clusters are: NGC 6266 (M62), NGC 6304, NGC 6316 and NGC 6723. The proper motions are on the Hipparcos system, as no background extragalactic objects are found in these high-extinction regions. The proper-motion uncertainties range between 0.3 and 0.6 mas/yr. We discuss the kinematics of these clusters and of three additional bulge clusters -- NGC 6522, NGC 6528 and NFC 6553 -- whose proper motions with respect to bulge stars had been determined previously. We find that all of the clusters …
We review our work on Galactic open clusters in recent years, and introduce our proposed large program for the LOCS (LAMOST Open Cluster Survey). First, based on the most complete open clusters sample with metallicity, age and distance data as well as kinematic information, some preliminary statistical analysis regarding the spatial and metallicity distributions is presented. In particular, a radial abundance gradient of - 0.058$\pm$ 0.006 dex kpc$^{-1}$ was derived, and by dividing clusters into age groups we show that the disk abundance gradient was steeper in the past. Secondly, proper moti…
By using the ENACS data, we have studied the properties of emission-line galaxies (ELG) in clusters. The fraction of ELG in clusters is 16~%; this fraction is slightly dependent on the cluster velocity dispersion, being larger for ``colder'' systems. ELG tend to occur more frequently than other cluster galaxies in substructures. However, only a minor cluster fraction has an ELG population with a mean velocity significantly different from that of the overall cluster population. The velocity distribution of cluster ELG is broader than that of the other cluster galaxies, which translates in a lar…
We present the results of the stellar and ionized gas kinematics of 13 bright peculiar Virgo cluster galaxies. The stellar velocity field are mostly consistent with a rotation pattern, but some of them shows interesting features such as; S-shaped stellar isovelocity contours in NGC 4064, and signatures of kinematical distinct components in NGC 4429, and NGC 4698. This latter galaxy and NGC 4424 exhibit extremely low (V/sigma)* values suggesting that these galaxies are the result of mergers. The ionized gas velocity fields are more disturbed than the stellar velocity fields, displaying non-circ…

A new kinematic and dynamic study of the halo of the giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128, is presented. From a spectroscopically confirmed sample of 340 globular clusters and 780 planetary nebulae, the rotation amplitude, rotation axis, velocity dispersion, and the total dynamical mass are determined for the halo of NGC 5128. The globular cluster kinematics were searched for both radial dependence and metallicity dependence by subdividing the globular cluster sample into 158 metal-rich ([Fe/H] > -1.0) and 178 metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -1.0) globular clusters. Our results show the kinematics of the me…
We use a combination of new AAOmega multi-object wide-field spectroscopic observations and literature data to define 111 spectroscopically confirmed members of the massive NGC 5044 group with M_B <= -13.5 mag, providing a three-fold increase in group members over previous analyses of this group. We find the group to have a dynamical mass of 9.2 x 10^13 solar masses, placing it on the border between rich groups and poor clusters. However, comparison to the L_x-sigma and L_x-mass relations shows it more closely follows cluster scaling relations. Using a combination of crossing time, X-ray contou…
HIRES on the Keck I telescope has been used to measure the first radial velocities for stars belonging to eleven, heavily-reddened globular clusters in the direction of the inner Galaxy. The question of kinematic substructuring among the Galactic globular cluster system is investigated using an updated catalog of globular cluster distances, metallicities and velocities. It is found that the population of metal-rich globular clusters shows significant rotation at all Galactocentric radii. For the metal-rich clusters within 4 kpc of the Galactic center, the measured rotation velocity and line-of…
Evolution with mass segregation and the evolution of the rotation of cores are both discussed for self-similar core collapse. Evolution with angular velocity proportional to the square root of the density is predicted. On the Dynamical Main Sequence of globular clusters the energy emission from binaries balances the energy expended in expanding the halo. Newton's exactly solved N-body problem is then given, along with recent generalisations, all of which have no violent relaxation, but a new type of statistical equilibrium is discussed. Finally, we set the creation of streams in the Galaxy's h…
We have redetermined kinematic parameters of the Gould Belt using currently available data on the motion of nearby young (log t < 7.91) open clusters, OB associations, and moving stellar groups. Our modeling shows that the residual velocities reach their maximum values of -4 km/s for rotation (in the direction of Galactic rotation) and +4 km/s for expansion at a distance from the kinematic center of about 300 pc. We have taken the following parameters of the Gould Belt center: Ro=150 pc and lo=128 degrees. The whole structure is shown to move relative to the local standard of rest at a velocit…
Wide-field photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have recently revealed that the Galactic globular cluster Palomar 5 is in the process of being tidally disrupted (Odenkirchen et al. 2001). Here we investigate the kinematics of this sparse remote star cluster using high resolution spectra from the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Twenty candidate cluster giants located within 6 arcmin of the cluster center have been observed with the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on VLT-UT2. The spectra provide radial velocities with a typical accuracy of 0.15 km/s. We find that the sample conta…
We introduce our project on galaxy evolution in the environment of rich clusters aiming at disentangling the importance of specific interaction and galaxy transformation processes from the hierarchical evolution of galaxies in the field. Emphasis is laid on the examination of the internal kinematics of disk galaxies through spatially resolved MOS spectroscopy with FORS at the VLT. First results are presented for the clusters MS1008.1-1224 (z=0.30), Cl0303+1706 (z=0.42), and Cl0413-6559 (F1557.19TC) (z=0.51). Out of 30 cluster members with emission-lines, 13 galaxies exhibit a rotation curve of…
About 25% of the Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) exhibit unusually extended color distribution of stars in the horizontal-branch (HB) phase. This phenomenon is now best understood as due to the presence of helium enhanced second generation subpopulations, which has raised a possibility that these peculiar GCs might have a unique origin. Here we show that these GCs with extended HB are clearly distinct from other normal GCs in kinematics and mass. The GCs with extended HB are more massive than normal GCs, and are dominated by random motion with no correlation between kinematics and metallicit…
(Abridged) The building blocks of galaxies are star clusters. These form with low-star formation efficiencies and, consequently, loose a large part of their stars that expand outwards once the residual gas is expelled by the action of the massive stars. Massive star clusters may thus add kinematically hot components to galactic field populations. This kinematical imprint on the stellar distribution function is estimated here by calculating the velocity distribution function for ensembles of star-clusters distributed as power-law or log-normal initial cluster mass functions (ICMFs). The resulti…
From observations with the GMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, we have obtained spectra for 39 globular cluster candidates in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60), of which 38 are confirmed globular clusters. The clusters extend out to a radius of 260" (3.5 effective radii). We find no rotation of the globular cluster system, with an upper limit of v/sigma < 0.6 at a confidence level of 95%. The globular cluster velocity dispersion is constant with radius, within the uncertainties. We fit isotropic models to the globular cluster and stellar kinematics; these…
We discuss evidence in local, present-day clusters of galaxies (from the ENACS survey) about the way in which those clusters have evolved and about the evolutionary relationships between the galaxies of different morphological types in them. This evidence is complementary to that obtained from the study of clusters at intermediate and high redshifts. We argue that the spatial distribution and the kinematics of the various types of galaxies in and outside substructures support the following picture. The ELLIPTICAL AND S0 GALAXIES have been around for a long time and have obtained an isotropic v…
Here we present HST WFPC2 imaging of 14 kinematically--distinct core ellipticals to examine their globular cluster systems. In particular, we probe the galaxy central regions, for which we might expect to see the strongest signatures of some formation and destruction processes. These data substantially increase the number of extragalactic globular cluster systems studied to date. We find that the globular cluster luminosity, and color, vary only weakly, if at all, with galactocentric distance. The mean color of globular clusters are constant with globular cluster magnitude. Several clear trend…
We present recent multi-object spectroscopy of globular clusters in the Virgo gEs M49 and M87. In M49, we have a total of 144 confirmed clusters out to 8 arcmin radius (~6 R_eff or 35 kpc). We find that the blue (metal-poor) clusters have both a higher velocity dispersion and rotation than the red (metal-poor) clusters. For the metal-rich population we place an upper limit of (v/sigma)_proj < 0.34 at 99% confidence. We calculate the velocity dispersion as a function of radius, and show that this is consistent with isotropic cluster orbits and the M49 mass distribution determined from X-ray dat…
The kinematic parameters of the Gould Belt are redetermined using modern data on the motion of nearby young ($\log t<7.91$) open clusters, OB-associations and moving stellar groups. The modelling carried out shows that the residual velocities achieve the maximal values equal to -4 km s$^{-1}$ for rotation (in the direction of the Galactic rotation) and $+4$ km s$^{-1}$ for expansion, when the distance from the kinematic centre is about 300 pc. We assumed the following parameters of the Gould Belt centre: $l_\circ=128^\circ$ and $R_\circ=150$ pc. It is shown that the whole structure of the Goul…
We present CCD photometry and proper motion studies of the two open star clusters NGC 1960 (M 36) and NGC 2194. Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagrams, for NGC 1960 we found an age of t=16 Myr and a distance of roughly d=1300 pc and for NGC 2194 t=550 Myr and d=2900 pc, respectively. We combined membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the initial mass function of the clusters and found slopes of Gamma=-1.23 +/- 0.17 for NGC 1960 and Gamma=-1.33 +/- 0.29 for NGC 2194. Compared to other IMF studies of the intermediate mass range, t…
We summarize several results based on the velocity data-set for cluster galaxies provided by ENACS (the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey). We describe the distribution of velocity dispersions of a complete sample of rich galaxy clusters, and compare it to the distribution of cluster X-ray temperatures, and with predictions of theoretical models. We then address the issue of the existence of a Fundamental Plane (FP) for rich clusters, first suggested by Schaeffer et al. We confirm the existence of this FP with the ENACS data-set. The cluster FP is different from the FP of elliptical galaxies, an…
We define a large sample of galaxies for use in a study of the fundamental plane in the intermediate redshift cluster CL1358+62 at $z=0.33$. We have analyzed high resolution spectra for 55 members of the cluster. The data were acquired with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck I 10m telescope. A new algorithm for measuring velocity dispersions is presented and used to measure the internal kinematics of the galaxies. This algorithm has been tested against the Fourier Fitting method so the data presented here can be compared with those measured previously in nearby galaxies. We ha…
We derive analytic expressions for the leading-order corrections to the polarization induced in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) due to scattering off hot electrons in galaxy clusters along the line of sight. For a thermal distribution of electrons with a kinetic temperature of 10 keV and a bulk peculiar velocity of 1000 km/s, the dominant corrections to the polarization induced by the primordial CMB quadrupole and the cluster peculiar velocity arise from electron thermal motion and are at the level of 10 per cent in each case, near the peak of the polarization signal. When more sensitive…
(Abridged) We study the impact of cluster environment on the evolution of spiral galaxies by examining their structure and kinematics. Rather than two-dimensional rotation curves, we observe complete velocity fields by placing three adjacent and parallel FORS2 MXU slits on each object, yielding several emission and absorption lines. The gas velocity fields are reconstructed and decomposed into circular rotation and irregular motions using kinemetry. To quantify irregularities in the gas kinematics, we define three parameters: sigma_{PA} (standard deviation of the kinematic position angle), Del…
We present kinematic parameters and absorption line strengths for three brightest cluster galaxies, NGC 6166, NGC 6173 and NGC 6086. We find that NGC 6166 has a velocity dispersion profile which rises beyond 20 arcsec from the nucleus, with a halo velocity dispersion in excess of 400 km/s. All three galaxies show a positive and constant h4 Hermite moment. The rising velocity dispersion profile in NGC 6166 thus indicates an increasing mass-to-light ratio. Rotation is low in all three galaxies, and NGC 6173 and NGC 6086 show possible kinematically decoupled cores. All three galaxies have Mg2 gra…
An extensive redshift survey has been conducted on a sample of 15 nearby (0.01 < z < 0.05) clusters of galaxies. A total number of 860 redshifts were determined by fitting of emission--lines and/or cross-correlation techniques. Of this sample, 735 galaxies are within 0.2--0.8 Mpc ($H_0$ = 50 km/s/Mpc) of the center of clusters. Approximate morphological types are available for most of the galaxies. A comparison of the present redshifts with published data allows an extensive error analysis. The agreement is excellent with the most modern data, showing a zero point error of 5 km/s and an overal…
