It is still debated whether star formation process depends on environment. In particular it is yet unclear whether star formation in the outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are, theoretically, less conducive, occurs in the same way as in the inner Galaxy. We investigate the population of NGC1893, a young cluster ~3-4 Myr in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >11 Kpc), to explore the effects of environmental conditions on star forming regions. We present infrared observations acquired using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and analyze the color-color diagrams to establish the membership of stars with excesses. We also merge this information with that obtained from Chandra ACIS-I observations, to identify the Class III population. We find that the cluster is very rich, with 242 PMS Classical T-Tauri stars and 7 Class 0/I stars. We identify 110 Class III candidate cluster members in the ACIS-I field of view. We estimate a disk fraction for NGC1893 of about 67%, similar to fractions calculated for nearby star forming regions of the same age. Although environmental conditions are unfavorable, star formation can clearly be very successful in the outer Galaxy, allowing creation of a very rich cluster like NGC1893.
We have performed IZJHKL' observations in NGC 6611, the young cluster that ionises the Eagle Nebula. We have discovered a rich pre-main sequence concentrated around the O-stars in the cluster. As measured by their L'-band excesses, at least 58% +/- 5% of the pre-main sequence objects (0.45 Msun < M < 2 Msun) have circumstellar discs. By comparing this disc frequency with frequencies determined for regions where the pre-main sequence stars are subject to less ionising radiation, we find no evidence that the harsher environment of NGC 6611 (approximately an order of magnitude more ionising Lyman…
We present 8-13 micron spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red, large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made of amorphous silicate.
We report preliminary results of AKARI observations of two globular clusters, NGC104 and NGC362. Imaging data covering areas of about 10x10 arcmin^2 centered on the two clusters have been obtained with InfraRed Camera (IRC) at 2.4, 3.2, 4.1, 7.0, 9.0, 11.0, 15.0, 18.0 and 24.0 mu. We used F11/F2 and F24/F7 flux ratios as diagnostics of circumstellar dust emission. Dust emissions are mainly detected from variable stars obviously on the asymptotic giant branch, but some variable stars that reside below the tip of the first-ascending giant branch also show dust emissions. We found eight red sourc…
We study the disk and accretion properties of young stars in the NGC 2068 and NGC 2071 clusters. Using low-resolution optical spectra, we define a membership sample and determine an age for the region of ~2 Myr. Using high-resolution spectra of the H-alpha line we study the accretion activity of these likely members and also examine the disk properties of the likely members using IRAC and MIPS mid-infrared photometry. A substantial fraction (79%) of the 67 members have an infrared excess while all of the stars with significant infrared excess show evidence for active accretion. We find three p…
We determine the distribution of circumstellar disk masses in the young (~0.3 Myr) cluster NGC 2024 by imaging a 2.5'x2.5' region in 3mm continuum emission to an RMS noise level of ~0.75 mJy/beam with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The mosaic encompasses 147 K-band sources as well as the molecular ridge seen previously in dust continuum emission. We detect 10 point-like sources in 3mm continuum emission above the level of 5-sigma within the unit gain region of the mosaic. One of these sources corresponds to the near-IR source IRS 2, an early B-type star. Two other sources are tentatively a…
The spectral and extinction properties of 14 pre-main sequence candidates in the central part of the very young open cluster NGC 6383 were investigated. None of these stars shows evidence for anomalous circumstellar extinction. However, six out of 14 programme stars do show an infrared excess, indicative of the presence of circumstellar dust, heated up by the central star. One of these stars (number 4), also shows Halpha in emission and shows some indications for the presence of circumstellar gas in its spectrum, and might therefore be a newly identified Herbig Ae star.
Context: the observation of young stars with circumstellar disks suggests that the disks are dissipated, starting from the inner region, by the radiation of the central star and eventually by the formation of rocky planetesimals, over a time scale of several million years. It was also shown that strong UV radiation emitted by nearby massive stars can heat a circumstellar disk up to some thousand degrees, inducing the photoevaporation of the gas. This process strongly reduces the dissipation time scale. Aims: we study whether there exists a correlation between the spatial distribution of stars …
Optical spectra of SN1994W in NGC 4041 revealed the presence of a dense (N_e > 10^8 cm^-3) circumstellar shell. An observation with the ROSAT HRI detected a source, with a 0.2-2.4 keV luminosity of ~8x10^39 erg/sec, coincident with the position of SN1994W to within 1''.4. The positional coincidence plus the optical evidence for a dense circumstellar shell support the identification of the X-ray source as SN1994W.
We have obtained high resolution mid-infrared images of the high mass protostar NGC 7538 IRS 1 using Michelle on Gemini North and find that the circumstellar dust associated with this source is extended on both large and small scales. The large-scale mid-infrared emission is asymmetric about the peak of IRS 1, being more extended to the northwest than the southeast. The position angle of the mid-infrared emission is similar to the position angle of the linearly distributed methanol masers at this location which are thought to trace a circumstellar disk. However, this position angle is also ver…
Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was ba…
The dust disk around Beta Pic must be produced by collision or by evaporation of orbiting Kuiper belt-like objects. Here we present the Orbiting-Evaporating-Bodies scenario in which the disk is a gigantic multi-cometary tail supplied by slowly evaporating bodies like Chiron. If dust is produced by evaporation, a planet with an eccentric orbit can explain the observed asymmetry of the disk, because the periastron distribution of the parent bodies are then expected to be non-axisymmetric. We investigate the consequence for the Kuiper belt-like objects of the formation and the migration of an out…
We present the results of the first sensitive L band (3.4 micron) imaging study of the nearby young embedded cluster NGC 2024. Two separate surveys of the cluster were acquired in order to obtain a census of the circumstellar disk fraction in the cluster. From an analysis of the JHKL colors of all sources in our largest area, we find an infrared excess fraction of > 86%. The JHKL colors suggest that the infrared excesses arise in circumstellar disks, indicating that the majority of the sources which formed in the NGC 2024 cluster are currently surrounded by, and likely formed with circumstella…
We investigate the outer halo globular cluster population of NGC 1399. This study uses wide-field imaging of this cluster system, which covers the largest area studied with CCD photometry until now. The cluster system of NGC 1399 is found to extend further than 100 kpc from the galaxy. A population of metal-rich, as well as metal-poor clusters has been identified at these large radii. At radii smaller than 55 kpc the specific frequency of the red cluster system remains constant, while that of the blue clusters increases proportional to $r^{0.8\pm0.2}$. For larger radii, the uncertainty of the …
Deep BV photometry for a large field covering the outer-halo globular cluster NGC 6229 is presented. For the first time, a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaching below the main sequence turnoff has been obtained for this cluster. Previous results regarding the overall morphology of the horizontal and giant branches are confirmed. In addition, nine possible extreme horizontal-branch stars have been identified in our deep images, as well as thirty-three candidate blue stragglers. We also find the latter to be more centrally concentrated than subgiant branch stars covering the same range in V ma…
We revisit the published analyses of ROSAT X-ray observations of the star forming regions NGC 2264 and Chamaeleon I (~3 and ~5 Myr old respectively) in the light of newly published optical data. At odds with previous results on Chamaeleon I members, we find that low mass stars in both regions have near-saturated emission levels. Similarly to what previously found in the Orion Nebula Cluster, Weak Line T-Tauri Stars in NGC 2264 and in the Chamaeleon I cloud have higher X-ray activity levels respect to Classical T Tauri Stars, arguing in favor of a role of the disk and/or accretion in determinin…
Deep g'r'i'z' images obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph are used to investigate the stellar content in the outer regions of the nearby Sc galaxies NGC 2403 and M33. The red giant branch tip occurs at i' = 23.6 +/- 0.1 in NGC 2403, and the Cepheid and RGB-tip distance scales for this galaxy are in good agreement. While very young stars are restricted to radii < 10 kpc along the plane of the disk, a population of bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is present out to r = 20 kpc, indicating that star formation occured outside of the present-day star-forming disk of NGC 2403 …
We present a proper motion study of the distant globular cluster NGC 7006 based on the measurement of 25 photographic plates spanning a 40-year interval. The absolute proper motion determined with respect to extragalactic objects is (-0.96, -1.14) +- (0.35, 0.40) mas/yr. The total space velocity of NGC 7006 in a Galactocentric rest frame is 279 km/s, placing the cluster on one of the most energetic orbits (Ra =102 kpc) known to date for clusters within 40-kpc from the Galactic center. We compare the orbits of four clusters that have apocentric radii larger than 80 kpc (NGC 5466, NGC 6934, NGC …
We present F336W (U), F439W (B), F555W (V), and F675W (R) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) photometry of two outer regions of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC6822. The NE region is ~13 arcmin from the galaxy centre, while the W region lies 10 arcmin out, and within the wispy low surface brightness outer regions of the galaxy. The fields are not crowded and contain few NGC 6822 stars. We discuss errors and uncertainties and find that the W region contains a main sequence that extends to stars of about 2 solar masses, with an age of about 200 Myr. The NE region has no main sequenc…
NGC 3642 was classified as a spiral galaxy with three rings and no bar. We have performed an HI and optical study of this nearly face-on galaxy. We find that the nuclear ring might in fact be part of an inner one-armed spiral, that could be driving nuclear accretion and feeding the central activity in the inner kpc. The inner ring is faint, and the outer ring is a rather ill-defined pseudoring. Furthermore, the size ratio of the rings is such that they cannot be due to a single pattern speed linking them together. The outer pseudoring is peculiar, since it lies in the faint outer parts of the …
As part of an on-going radio supernova monitoring program, we have discovered a variable, compact steep spectrum radio source ~65 arcsec (~4 kpc) from the centre of the starburst galaxy NGC 3310. If the source is at the distance of NGC 3310, then its 5 GHz luminosity is ~3 x 10^{19} WHz^-1. The source luminosity, together with its variability characteristics, compact structure (<17 mas) and its association with a group of HII regions, leads us to propose that it is a previously uncatalogued type II radio supernova. A search of archival data also shows an associated X-ray source with a luminosi…
We present preliminary results of our dynamical study of the outer globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax Cluster. About 160 new radial velocities for globular clusters at projected galactocentric distances between 8 and 18 arcminutes indicate that the constant velocity dispersion of 276 km/s (for all clusters) already found for the inner region can be traced out to 80 kpc. We find that the kinematical properties of the blue (metal-poor) and the red (metal-rich) globular cluster subpopulations appear to be different: While the velocity distribution of the red clu…
We have carried out a detailed abundance analysis for 21 elements in a sample of four RGB stars in the outer halo globular cluster NGC 7492 (R{GC} 25 kpc); we find [Fe/H] = -1.82 dex inferred from FeI lines (-1.79 from FeII) using high dispersion (R=35,000) spectra obtained with HIRES at the Keck Observatory. Most elements show no sign of star-to-star variation within our limited sample. We have, however, detected an anti-correlation between O and Na abundances similar to that seen in our previous analyses of inner halo GCs as well as in studies of relatively nearby GCs by others. We compare t…
We present images and high-resolution spectra of the planetary nebulae IC 2553 and NGC 5882. Spatio-kinematic modeling of the nebulae shows that they are composed of a markedly elongated inner shell, and of a less aspherical outer shell expanding at a considerably higher velocity than the inner one. Embedded in the outer shells of both nebulae are found several low-ionization knots. In IC 2553, the knots show a point-symmetric distribution with respect to the central star: one possible explanation for their formation is that they are the survivors of pre-existing point-symmetric condensations …
This paper investigates small-scale structures of dense gas and dust around the low-mass protostellar binary NGC1333-IRAS2 using millimeter-wavelength aperture-synthesis observations from the OVRO and BIMA interferometers. The detected 3 mm continuum emission is consistent with models of the envelope around IRAS2A, based on previously reported submillimeter continuum images, down to the 3", or 500 AU, resolution of the interferometer data. Our data constrain the contribution of an unresolved point source to 22 mJy. Within the accuracy of the parameters describing the envelope model, the point …
We present a study of the structure and kinematics of the triple-shell planetary nebula NGC 7662 based on long-slit echelle spectroscopic observations and HST archival narrow-band images. The structure of NGC 7662 main nebula consists of a central cavity surrounded by two concentric shells. The bright inner shell has a non-negligible thickness and the highest density in the nebula. The outer shell is filled with nebular material whose density profile shows a propto 1/r drop-off in the inner regions of the shell and flattens in the outermost regions. Both the inner and the outer shells can be d…
From a 2 x 2 degree survey of NGC 6822 we have previously established that this Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy possesses a huge spheroid having more than one degree in length. This spheroid is in rotation but its rotation curve is known only within ~15' from the center. It is therefore critical to identify bright stars belonging to the spheroid to characterize, as far as possible, its outer kinematics. We use the new wide field near infrared imager CPAPIR, operated by the SMARTS consortium, to acquire J, Ks images of two 34.8' x 34.8' areas in the outer spheroid to search for C stars. The …
We report results from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) program to study the distribution of hot neutral (molecular hydrogen) and ionized circumstellar material in the young planetary nebulae NGC 7027. HST/NICMOS provided very high spatial resolution imaging in line and continuum emission, and the stability and large dynamic range needed for investigating detailed structures in the circumstellar material. We present dramatic new images of NGC 7027 that have led to a new understanding of the structure in this important planetary nebul…
We present clear spectroscopic detections of molecular hydrogen in the outer filaments of the H-alpha nebula surrounding the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster, NGC 1275. This implies the presence of warm molecular gas clouds at projected distances up to 24 kpc from the nucleus of the host galaxy, embedded in the hot intracluster medium. The emission-line intensity ratios reveal that the molecular hydrogen is predominately thermally excited with excitation temperatures of 1600-2200K, suggesting a lack of pressure balance between the molecular component and its surrounding medium. Excitation…
NGC 5128, a giant elliptical galaxy only $\sim 4$ Mpc away, is the dominant member of a galaxy group of over 80 probable members. The Centaurus group provides an excellent sample for a kinematic comparison between the halo of NGC 5128 and its surrounding satellite galaxies. A new study, presented here, shows no kinematic difference in rotation amplitude, rotation axis, and velocity dispersion between the halo of NGC 5128, determined from over $\sim340$ of its globular clusters, and those of the Centaurus group as a whole. These results suggest NGC 5128 could be behaving in part as the inner co…
We have made observations of the \ion{H}{1} in the southern ringed barred spiral galaxies NGC~1433 and NGC~6300 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the main goal being to test the resonance theory for the origin of these rings. NGC~1433 is the prototypical ringed barred spiral, and displays distinct \ion{H}{1}~counterparts to its nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and plume-like features. The $L_{4}$ and $L_{5}$ regions at corotation, as well as the bar itself, are relatively devoid of neutral atomic hydrogen. By associating the inner ring of NGC~1433 with the inner sec…
We present the analysis of seven band (1.2 to 8 micron) ground and space-based imaging of the NGC 7129 young stellar cluster from FLAMINGOS on MMT, 2MASS, and the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. An analysis of the H-[4.5] vs. J-H colors reveals 84 objects with circumstellar disks. Of these, 42 are located within the cluster core, a 0.5 pc (100'') radius region of enhanced stellar surface density. From a luminosity and extinction limited sample of the stars within the cluster core boundary we have determined that 54% +/- 14% have circumstellar disks. Finally, we rep…
We present surface photometry of the irregular galaxy NGC 3077 using two data sets: photographic plates and CCD images. Isophotal contours, luminosity and colour distributions as well as position angle and ellipticity curves show that NGC 3077 is similar to an elliptical galaxy in the outer regions with a disturbed blue centre. The outer isophotes 22-25 mag/arcsec^2 are approximately centred on the dynamical centre, the inner ones are disturbed by the dominant contribution of a reddened young population.
We have observed SN1998S which exploded in NGC3877, with the UES at the WHT and with the E230M echelle of STIS aboard HST. Both data sets were obtained at two seperate epochs. From our own Galaxy we detect interstellar absorption lines of CaII, FeII, MgI, and probably MnII from the edge of the HVC Complex M. We derive gas-phase abundances which are very similar to warm disk clouds in the local ISM, which we believe argues against the HVC material having an extragalactic origin. At the velocity of NGC3877 we detect interstellar MgI, MgII, MnII, CaII, & NaI. Surprisingly, one component is seen t…
We present wide-field optical imaging covering the entire neutral hydrogen disc of the Local Group dwarf galaxy NGC 6822. These observations reveal the presence of numerous blue, young stars at large galactocentric radii well beyond R_25. Blue stars are also found that are associated with NGC 6822's companion HI cloud, indicating that star formation was triggered in the companion in the last 10^8 yr. In general, blue stars are present where the HI surface densities reach values > 5 x 10^20 cm^(-2). However, over one-third of the blue stars detected are found at lower surface densities. The you…
We present the results of a 2.7 mm continuum interferometric survey of 24 young stellar objects in 11 fields. The target objects range from deeply embedded Class 0 sources to optical T Tauri sources. This is the first sub-arcsecond survey of the 2.7 mm dust continuum emission from young, embedded stellar systems. The images show a diversity of structure and complexity. The optically visible T Tauri stars (DG Tauri, HL Tauri, GG Tauri, and GM Aurigae) have continuum emission dominated by compact, less than 1", circumstellar disks. The more embedded near-infrared sources (SVS13 and L1551 IRS5) ha…
Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) represent the earliest observed stages of clustered star formation, characterized by large column densities of cold and dense molecular material observed in silhouette against a bright background of mid-IR emission. Up to now, IRDCs were predominantly known toward the inner Galaxy where background infrared emission levels are high. We present Spitzer observations with the Infrared Camera Array toward object G111.80+0.58 (G111) in the outer Galactic Plane, located at a distance of ~3 kpc from us and ~10 kpc from the Galactic center. Earlier results show that G111 is…
(Abridged) We present H-alpha images of five edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4631, NGC 4244, NGC 3003, and UGC 9242. We also analyze [SII] 6717+6731A and [OIII] 5007A images of NGC 4631. We analyze the ionized gas content, with particular attention to the diffuse ionized gas (DIG). The DIG layer in NGC 891 is traced out to at least 5 kpc from the midplane, confirming an earlier spectroscopic detection. The DIG in four of these galaxies contributes 40 to 50% of the total H-alpha luminosity, similar to face-on galaxies, but in NGC 891 the DIG contributes 80 to 90%. This is likely due to the highe…
We present a kinematical and photometrical study of a member, NGC4778, of the nearest (z=0.0137) compact group: Hickson 62. Our analysis reveals that Hickson 62a, also known as NGC4778, is an S0 galaxy with kinematical and morphological peculiarities, both in its central regions (r < 5'') and in the outer halo. In the central regions, the rotation curve shows the existence of a kinematically decoupled stellar component, offset with respect to the photometric center. In the outer halo we find an asymmetric rotation curve and a velocity dispersion profile showing a rise on the SW side, in direct…
We present an analysis of optical HST/STIS and HST/FOS spectroscopy of 6 blue stragglers found in the globular clusters M3, NGC6752 and NGC6397. These stars are a subsample of a set of ~50 blue stragglers and stars above the main sequence turn-off in four globular clusters which will be presented in an forthcoming paper. All but the 6 stars presented here can be well fitted with non-LTE model atmospheres. The 6 misfits, on the other hand, possess Balmer jumps which are too large for the effective temperatures implied by their Paschen continua. We find that our data for these stars are consiste…
BV CCD photometry of the central (1.5 arcmin x 2.0 arcmin) part of the mildly concentrated outer-halo globular cluster NGC 6229 is presented. The data reduction in such a crowded field was based on a wavelet transform analysis. Our larger dataset extends the previous results by Carney et al. (1991, AJ, 101, 1699) for the outer and less crowded fields of the cluster, and confirms that NGC 6229 has a peculiar color-magnitude diagram for its position in the Galaxy. In particular, NGC 6229's horizontal branch (HB) presents several interesting features, among which stand out: a well populated and v…
We present time-series B, V photometry of NGC 6229, obtained with the purpose of providing the first extensive CCD variability study of this cluster. As a result, we were able to obtain periods for all NGC 6229 variables, with the exception of five stars from the Borissova et al. (1997) candidate list located very close to the cluster center. Two variable stars suspected by Carney, Fullton, & Trammell (1991) are first-overtone RR Lyrae (RRc) stars, whereas seven of the 12 candidates from Borissova et al. (1997) are confirmed variables -- three of them being fundamental RR Lyrae (RRab) pulsator…
With 2D hydrodynamical simulations of disks perturbed externally by stars, brown dwarfs or planets we investigate possible scenarios that can account for the spiral structure in circumstellar disks. We consider two scenarios, spiral structure driven by an external bound planet or low mass star and that excited by a previous stellar close encounter or flyby. We find that both scenarios produce morphology similar to that observed in the outer disks of HD 141569A and HD 100546; moderately open 2-armed outer spiral structure. The outer two-armed spiral structure observed in the disk of HD 141569A …
New, very long (25'), cuts of spatially resolved profiles of the Halpha and [N II] optical emission lines have been obtained over the face of the Helix planetary nebula, NGC 7293. These directions were chosen to supplement previous similar, though shorter, cuts as well as crossing interesting phenomena in this nebular envelope. In particular one new cut crosses the extremes of the proposed CO J=2-1 emitting outer "torus" shown by Huggins and his co-workers to be nearly orthogonal to its inner counterpart. The second new cut crosses the extensive outer filamentary arcs on either side of the bri…
We have constructed a 3D photoionisation model of a planetary nebula (PN) similar in structure to NGC 7009 with its outer pair of knots (also known as FLIERs --fast, low-ionization emission regions). The work is motivated by the fact that the strong [N II]6583A line emission from FLIERs in many planetary nebulae has been attributed to a significant local overabundance of nitrogen. We explore the possibility that the apparent enhanced nitrogen abundance previously reported in the FLIERs may be due to ionization effects. Our model is indeed able to reproduce the main spectroscopic and imaging ch…
We have used the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini South 8m telescope in exceptional conditions (0.6" FWHM seeing) to observe the outer stellar disk of the Sculptor group galaxy NGC 300 at two locations. At our point source detection threshold of r' = 27.0 (3-sigma) mag, we trace the stellar disk out to a radius of 24', or 2.2 R_25 where R_25 is the 25 mag/arcsec**2 isophotal radius. This corresponds to about 10 scale lengths in this low-luminosity spiral (M_B = -18.6), or about 14.4 kpc at a cepheid distance of 2.0 +/- 0.07 Mpc. The background galaxy counts are derived in …
Two-dimensional spectra of Supernova 1987A were obtained on 1998 November 14-15 (4282 days after outburst) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The slit sampled portions of the inner circumstellar ring at the east and west ansae as well as small sections of both the northern and southern outer rings. The temperature and density at these locations are estimated by nebular analysis of [N II], [O III], and [S II] emission line ratios, and with time-dependent photoionization/recombination models. The results from these two methods are mutu…
We have undertaken a study of the globular cluster (GC) systems of a large sample of elliptical and spiral galaxies in order to test predictions of galaxy formation models. Here we present results for the giant Virgo elliptical NGC 4472 (M49). The galaxy was observed in 3 filters (BVR) using the Mosaic Imager on the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope. Our images roughly double the radial coverage of previous CCD observations of NGC 4472. We have combined the Mosaic data with spectroscopic data and HST data in order to fully characterize the level of contamination in our GC sample. The radial profile of t…
We present deep Halpha images of three nearby late-type spiral galaxies (NGC628, NGC1058 and NGC6946), which reveal the presence of HII regions out to, and beyond, two optical radii (defined by the 25th B-band isophote). The outermost HII regions appear small, faint and isolated, compared to their inner disk counterparts, and are distributed in organized spiral arm structures, likely associated with underlying HI arms and faint stellar arms. The relationship between the azimuthally--averaged Halpha surface brightness (proportional to star formation rate per unit area) and the total gas surface…
The number and the nature of emission line stars in the young open cluster NGC6611 is still the object of debates. Due to the presence of a strong and variable nebulosity in the cluster, the number of emission line stars is highly depending on the technique and the resolution used for the observations. Thanks to observations with the ESO-WFI, in slitless spectroscopic mode, and with the VLT-GIRAFFE we have been able to disentangle the circumstellar and nebular emissions. We confirm the small number of true emission line objects and we precise their nature: mainly Herbig Be stars.
We present Spitzer high-resolution spectra of off-nuclear regions in the central cluster galaxies NGC 1275 and NGC 4696 in the Perseus and Centaurus clusters, respectively. Both objects are surrounded by extensive optical emission-line filamentary nebulae, bright outer parts of which are the targets of our observations. The 10-37um spectra show strong pure rotational lines from molecular hydrogen revealing a molecular component to the filaments which has an excitation temperature of ~300-400K. The flux in the 0-0S(1) molecular hydrogen line correlates well with the strength of the optical line…
NGC 2362 is a richly populated Galactic cluster, devoid of natal molecular gas and dust. The cluster represents the final product of the star forming process and hosts an unobscured and near-complete initial mass function. NGC 2362 is dominated by the O9 Ib multiple star, tau CMa, as well as several dozen unevolved B-type stars. Distributed throughout the cluster are several hundred suspected intermediate and low-mass pre-main sequence members. Various post-main sequence evolutionary models have been used to infer an age of 5 Myr for the one evolved member, tau CMa. These estimates are in clos…
Deep r' and i' images obtained with GMOS on Gemini South are used to probe the bright stellar content in the outer regions of NGC 5253 and ESO269-G058. Red giant branch (RGB) stars are traced out to a distance of 8 kpc along the major axis of NGC 5253, and 6 kpc in ESO269-G058. The outer regions of both galaxies are metal-poor; RGB stars located between projected major axis distances of 2 and 4 kpc in NGC 5253 have [Fe/H] ~ -1, whereas RGB stars in the corresponding portion of ESO269-G058 have [Fe/H] ~ -1.8. Stars with metallicities that differ from the mean by more than a few tenths of a dex …
Australia Telescope Compact Array HI observations reveal the existence of 5.8x10^8 M_sun of HI gas in the central 7 kpc of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3175. The detected HI and CO gas can explain why star formation, as traced by other emission processes, is going on in the inner part of its disk. On the other hand, the entire outer disk, beyond 3.5 kpc radius, shows no HI emission, has a very red colour and exhibits neither radio continuum nor H-alpha emission. This indicates that the outer part of NGC 3175 is quiescent, i.e. not forming stars at a measurable rate. Its HI deficiency and the …
Having already reported on the first photometric study of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 1883 (Carraro et al. 2003), we present in this paper the first spectroscopic multi-epoch investigation of a sample of evolved stars in the same cluster. The aim is to derive the cluster membership, velocity and metallicity, and discuss recent claims in the literature (Tadross 2005) that NGC 1883 is as metal poor as globular clusters in the Halo. Besides, being one of the few outer Galactic disk intermediate-age open clusters known so far, it is an ideal target to improve our knowledge of the Galacti…
The intriguing nearly face-on southern ringed spiral galaxy NGC 4622, the first galaxy definitively shown to have leading spiral structure, is revisited in this paper with new images from the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2, together with ground-based optical and near-IR imaging, and a Fabry-Perot H-alpha velocity field. The data provide new information on the disk/bulge/halo mix, rotation curve, star formation in the galaxy, and the sense of winding of its prominent spiral arms. Previously, we suggested that the weaker, inner single arm most likely has the leading sense, based on a numerical s…
S308 is a circumstellar bubble blown by the WN4 star HD50896. It is one of the only two single-star bubbles that show detectable diffuse X-ray emission. We have obtained XMM-Newton EPIC observations of the northwest quadrant of S308. The diffuse X-ray emission shows a limb-brightened morphology, with a clear gap extending from the outer edge of the diffuse X-ray emission to the outer rim of the nebular shell. The X-ray spectrum of the diffuse emission is very soft, and is well fitted by an optically thin plasma model for a N-enriched plasma at temperatures of ~1.1x10^6 K. A hotter gas componen…
Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar material. The observations were made at a wavelength of 20.5 $μ$m with the CAMIRAS camera mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We report the ob…
Detailed studies of the photometric and kinematical properties of compact groups of galaxies are crucial to understand the physics of galaxy interactions and to shed light on some aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we present a kinematical and photometrical study of a member, NGC4778, of the nearest (z=0.0137) compact group: Hickson 62. Aims: The aim of this work was to investigate the existence of kinematical anomalies in the brightest group member, NGC4778 in order to constrain the dynamical status and the formation history of the group. Methods: We used long-slit spect…
The outer region (0.75--1.25 r_e in the B-band) of the merger-remnant elliptical NGC 3610 is studied using extremely high signal to noise Keck spectra, with a supplementary spectrum of the galaxy center. Stellar population parameters -- age, [Z/H], [$α$/Fe] -- are measured in several apertures along the slit. Using the multi-index simultaneous fitting method of Proctor et al. (2004), no significant stellar population gradients are detected in the outer parts of the galaxy. The overall gradients relative to the galaxy center are consistent with those found in many other early-type galaxies, tho…
The distribution of stars in the outer part of the sparse globular cluster NGC 5466 provides evidence for possible tidal mass loss after a recent disk-shock near the solar circle.
