We develop the theory of Abelian functions defined using a tetragonal curve of genus six, discussing in detail the cyclic curve $y^4 = x^5 + λ_4x^4 + λ_3x^3 + λ_2x^2 + λ_1x + λ_0$. We construct Abelian functions using the multivariate $σ$-function associated to the curve, generalising the theory of the Weierstrass $\wp$-function. We demonstrate that such functions can give a solution to the KP-equation, outlining how a general class of solutions could be generated using a wider class of curves. We also present the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the functions, the solution of the Jacobi Inversion Problem, a power series expansion for $σ(\bu)$ and a new addition formula.
We develop the theory of Abelian functions associated with cyclic trigonal curves by considering two new cases. We investigate curves of genus six and seven and consider whether it is the trigonal nature or the genus which dictates certain areas of the theory. We present solutions to the Jacobi inversion problem, sets of relations between the Abelian function, links to the Boussinesq equation and a new addition formula.
Let M_{7,n} be the (coarse) moduli space of smooth curves of genus 7 with n marked points defined over the complex field. We denote by M^1_{7,n;4} the locus of points inside M_{7,n} representing curves carrying a g^1_4. It is classically known that M^1_{7,n;4} is irreducible of dimension 17+n. We prove in this paper that M^1_{7,n;4} is rational for 0<= n <= 11.
We prove that the moduli space of tetragonal curves of genus g>6 is rational when g is congruent to 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10 modulo 12 and not equal to 9, 45.
Cyclic curves, i.e. curves fixed by a cyclic collineation group, play a central role in the investigation of cyclic arcs in Desarguesian projective planes. In this paper, the genus of a cyclic curve arising from a cyclic k-arc of Singer type is computed.
We show that the moduli spaces of non-triple cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves and that of even spin curves of genus 2 are birationally isomorphic via the Prym map. We describe the log canonical models of the moduli space of even spin curves of genus 2 and use this to extend the above birational map.
We discuss the theory of generalized Weierstrass $σ$ and $\wp$ functions defined on a trigonal curve of genus four, following earlier work on the genus three case. The specific example of the "purely trigonal" (or "cyclic trigonal") curve $y^3=x^5+λ_4 x^4 +λ_3 x^3+λ_2 x^2 +λ_1 x+λ_0$ is discussed in detail, including a list of some of the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the $\wp$ functions, and the derivation of an addition formulae.
In this paper, we list all cyclic automorphisms subgroups $H$ for which there exists a smooth projective non-hyperelliptic sextic curve $C$ with $H\preceq Aut(C)$. Furthermore, we attach to each group a defining equation of a plane sextic curve having exactly this group as cyclic automorphisms subgroup. These equations cover up to isomorphism all plane non-singular sextic curves having some non-trivial automorphism.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a finite field. Balasubramanian and Koblitz have proved that if the l-th roots of unity m_l is not contained in the ground field, then a field extension of the ground field contains m_l if and only if the l-torsion points of E are rational over the same field extension. We generalize this result to Jacobians of genus two curves with complex multiplication. In particular, we show that the Weil- and the Tate-pairing on such a Jacobian are non-degenerate over the same field extension of the ground field.

A cyclic trigonal curve of genus three is a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}^1$, therefore can be written as a smooth plane curve with equation $y^3 = f(x) =(x - b_1) (x - b_2) (x - b_3) (x - b_4)$. Following Weierstrass for the hyperelliptic case, we define an ``$\mathrm{al}$'' function for this curve and $\mathrm{al}^{(c)}_r$, $c=0,1,2$, for each one of three particular covers of the Jacobian of the curve, and $r=1,2,3,4$ for a finite branchpoint $(b_r,0)$. This generalization of the Jacobi $\mathrm{sn}$, $\mathrm{cn}$, $\mathrm{dn}$ functions satisfies the relation: $$ \sum_{r=1}^…
To every double cover ramified in two points of a general trigonal curve of genus g, one can associate an étale double cover of a tetragonal curve of genus g+1. We show that the corresponding Prym varieties are canonically isomorphic as principally polarized abelian varieties.
The following corollary has been added: for general tetragonal curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 9$ the homogeneous coordinate ring of $C$ defined by the line bundle $K(-T)$, where $K$ is the canonical class, $T$ is the tetragonal series, is Koszul. Also some misprints are corrected.
We study the Prym varieties arising from étale cyclic coverings of degree 7 over a curve of genus 2. These Prym varieties are products of Jacobians JY x JY of genus 3 curves Y with polarization type D=(1,1,1,1,1,7). We describe the fibers of the Prym map between the moduli space of such coverings and the moduli space of abelian sixfolds with polarization type D, admitting an automorphism of order 7.
If $p$ is prime, a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ is called cyclic $p$-gonal if it admits a cyclic group of automorphisms $C_{p}$ of order $p$ such that the quotient space $X/C_{p}$ has genus 0. If in addition $C_{p}$ is not normal in the full automorphism $G$, then we call $G$ a non-normal cyclic $p$-gonal group. In the following we classify all non-normal $p$-gonal groups.
A cyclic $n$-gonal surface is a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ admitting a cyclic group of conformal automorphisms $C$ of order $n$ such that the quotient space $X/C$ has genus 0. In this paper, we provide an overview of ongoing research into automorphism groups of cyclic $n$-gonal surfaces. Much of the paper is expository or will appear in forthcoming papers, so proofs are usually omitted. Numerous explicit examples are presented illustrating the computational methods currently being used to study these surfaces.
In a previous paper, the authors proved that the Prym variety of any non-cyclic etale triple cover of a smooth curve of genus 2 is a Jacobian variety of dimension 2. This gives a map from the moduli space of such covers to the moduli space of Jacobian varieties of dimension 2. We extend this map to a proper map of a certain moduli space of admissible $S_3$-covers of genus 7 to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. The main result is that this map is finite surjective of degree 10.
Let $X$ be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve of genus at least two, defined over a number field. In 1984, Szpiro conjectured that $X$ has a "small point". In this paper we prove that if $X$ is a cyclic cover of prime degree of the projective line, then $X$ has infinitely many "small points". In particular, we establish the first cases of Szpiro's small points conjecture, including the genus two case and the hyperelliptic case. The proofs use Arakelov theory for arithmetic surfaces and the theory of logarithmic forms.
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 11$, non-tetragonal, considered in its canonical embedding in $\mathbf{P}^{g-1}$. We prove that $C$ is a linear section of an arithmetically Gorenstein normal variety $Y$ in $\mathbf{P}^{g+r}$, not a cone, with $\dim(Y)=r+2$ and $ω_Y=\mathcal{O}_Y(-r)$, if the Gauss--Wahl map of $C$ has corank larger or equal than $r+1$. This relies on previous work of Wahl and Arbarello-Bruno-Sernesi; a partial converse is given via a theorem of Lvovski. We derive a similar result for $K3$ surfaces: Let $(S,L)$ be a polarized $K3$ surface of genus $g \geq …
We study the Prym map for degree-7 etale cyclic coverings over a curve of genus 2. We extend this map to a proper map on a partial compactification of the moduli space of such coverings, and prove that the Prym map is generically finite onto its image of degree 10.
In this paper we obtain conditions on the divisors of the group order of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic genus 2 curve, generated by the complex multiplication method described by Weng (2003) and Gaudry (2005). Examples, where these conditions imply that the Jacobian has a large cyclic subgroup, are given.
We show, for each algebraically closed field, the rationality of the following two moduli spaces: M(3,3) parametrizing pairs (C, η) where C has genus 3 and ηis a 3-torsion divisor class, respectively of M(3,<3>) parametrizing pairs (C, <η>) as above and where <η> is the cyclic subgroup of order 3 in Pic_0(C) generated by η.

Let $\X$ be an irreducible, smooth, projective curve of genus $g \geq 2$ defined over the complex field $\C.$ Then there is a covering $π: \X \longrightarrow ¶^1,$ where $¶^1$ denotes the projective line. The problem of expressing branch points of the covering $π$ in terms of the transcendentals (period matrix, thetanulls, e.g.) is classical. It goes back to Riemann, Jacobi, Picard and Rosenhein. Many mathematicians, including Picard and Thomae, have offered partial treatments for this problem. In this work, we address the problem for cyclic curves of genus 2, 3, and 4 and find relations among…
In this work we study the additive orbifold cohomology of the moduli stack of smooth genus g curves. We show that this problem reduces to investigating the rational cohomology of moduli spaces of cyclic covers of curves where the genus of the covering curve is g. Then we work out the case of genus g=3. Furthermore, we determine the part of the orbifold cohomology of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of genus 3 curves that comes from the Zariski closure of the inertia stack of M_3.
We study the stack B_{h,g,n} of uniform cyclic covers of degree n between smooth curves of genus h and g and, for h >> g, present it as an open substack of a vector bundle over the universal Jacobian stack of M_g. We use this description to compute the integral Picard group of B_{h,g,n}, showing that it is generated by tautological classes of B_{h,g,n}.

We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell$ covers of the projective line in characteristic $p$ for distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. The main result is about the intersection of the $p$-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell=3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic $p$, with every genus $g$, signature type $(r,s)$ and $p$-rank $f$ satisfying the clear necessary conditions.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
The Brill-Noether Theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a linear series. Here we consider a general n-fold, etale cyclic cover p of a curve C of genus g and investigate for which numbers r,d a linear series of dimension r and degree d exists on the covering curve. For r=1 this gives gonality. Using degeneration to a special singular example (containing a Castelnuovo canonical curve) and the theory of of limit linear series for tree-like curves we show that the Plücker formula yields a necessary condition for the existence of a linear series (of dimension r, deg…
In this paper we develop techniques for computing the relative Brauer group of curves, focusing particularly on the case where the genus is 1. We use these techniques to show that the relative Brauer group may be infinite (for certain ground fields) as well as to determine this group explicitly for certain curves defined over the rational numbers. To connect to previous descriptions of relative Brauer groups in the literature, we describe a family of genus 1 curves, which we call "cyclic type" for which the relative Brauer group can be shown to have a particularly nice description. In order to…
This paper is devoted to the explicit description of the Galois descent obstruction for hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus whose reduced automorphism group is cyclic of order coprime to the characteristic of their ground field. Along the way, we obtain an arithmetic criterion for the existence of a hyperelliptic descent. The obstruction is described by the so-called arithmetic dihedral invariants of the curves in question. If it vanishes, then the use of these invariants also allows the explicit determination of a model over the field of moduli; if not, then one obtains a hyperelliptic mo…
We study the algebraic geometry of twisted Higgs bundles of cyclic type along complex curves. These objects, which generalize ordinary cyclic Higgs bundles, can be identified with representations of a cyclic quiver in a twisted category of coherent sheaves. Referring to the Hitchin fibration, we produce a fibre-wise geometric description of the locus of such representations within the ambient twisted Higgs moduli space. When the genus is 0, we produce a concrete geometric identification of the moduli space as a vector bundle over an associated (twisted) A-type quiver variety; we count the numb…
The ordinariness of elliptic curves is essential in proving various expected properties of elliptic curves in positive characteristic and can be extended to algebraic curves of arbitrary genus. The present paper deals with another kind of extension, i.e., ordinariness of dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers, or more generally, dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-opers. We prove that, for dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers on elliptic curves, this notion is essentially equivalent to the classical ordinariness. Moreover, the main result of the present paper asserts that the pull-back of an ordinary dormant $\math…
A superelliptic curve $\X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ is not necessarily defined over its field of moduli but it can be defined over a quadratic extension of it. While a lot of work has been done by many authors to determine which hyperelliptic curves are defined over their field of moduli, less is known for superelliptic curves. In this paper we observe that if the reduced group of a genus $g\geq 2$ superelliptic curve $\X$ is different from the trivial or cyclic group, then $\X$ can be defined over its field of moduli; in the cyclic situation we provide a sufficient condition for this to happen. We …
In arithmetic and algebraic geometry, superspecial (s.sp.\ for short) curves are one of the most important objects to be studied, with applications to cryptography and coding theory. If $g \geq 4$, it is not even known whether there exists such a curve of genus $g$ in general characteristic $p > 0$, and in the case of $g=4$, several computational approaches to search for those curves have been proposed. In the genus-$4$ hyperelliptic case, Kudo-Harashita proposed a generic algorithm to enumerate all s.sp.\ curves, and recently Ohashi-Kudo-Harashita presented an algorithm specific to the case w…
Prym-Teichmüller curves $W_D(4)$ constitute the main examples of known primitive Teichmüller curves in the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$. We determine, for each non-square discriminant $D>1$, the number and type of orbifold points in $W_D(4)$. These results, together with the formulas of Lanneau-Nguyen and Möller for the number of cusps and the Euler characteristic, complete the topological characterisation of Prym-Teichmüller curves in genus 3. Crucial for the determination of the orbifold points is the analysis of families of genus 3 cyclic covers of degree $4$ and $6$, branched over four poi…
In a talk at the Banff International Research Station in 2015 Asher Auel asked questions about genus one curves in Severi-Brauer varieties $SB(A)$. More specifically he asked about the smooth cubic curves in Severi-Brauer surfaces, that is in $SB(D)$ where $D/F$ is a degree three division algebra. Even more specifically, he asked about the Jacobian, $E$, of these curves. In this paper we give a version of an answer to both these questions, describing the surprising connection between these curves and properties of the algebra $A$. Let $F$ contain $ρ$, a primitive third root of one. Since $D/F$…
Consider the Jacobian of a genus two curve defined over a finite field and with complex multiplication. In this paper we show that if the l-Sylow subgroup of the Jacobian is not cyclic, then the embedding degree of the Jacobian with respect to l is one.
