The purpose of this paper to analyze in some detail the arguably simplest case of diversity-induced reseonance: that of a system of globally-coupled linear oscillators subjected to a periodic forcing. Diversity appears as the parameters characterizing each oscillator, namely its mass, internal frequency and damping coefficient are drawn from a probability distribution. The main ingredients for the diversity-induced-resonance phenomenon are present in this system as the oscillators display a variability in the individual responses but are induced, by the coupling, to synchronize their responses. A steady state solution for this model is obtained. We also determine the conditions under which it is possible to find a resonance effect.
Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally coupled systems are studied using a nonlinear diffusion equation for the number density. The amplitude of the order parameter oscillation is enhanced in an intermediate range of noise strength for a globally coupled bistable system, and the order parameter oscillation is entrained to the external periodic force in an intermediate range of noise strength. These enhancement phenomena of the response of the order parameter in the deterministic equations are interpreted as stocha…
A bifurcation theory for a system of globally coupled phase oscillators is developed based on the theory of rigged Hilbert spaces. It is shown that there exists a finite-dimensional center manifold on a space of generalized functions. The dynamics on the manifold is derived for any coupling functions. When the coupling function is $\sin θ$, a bifurcation diagram conjectured by Kuramoto is rigorously obtained. When it is not $\sin θ$, a new type of bifurcation phenomenon is found due to the discontinuity of the projection operator to the center subspace.
We analyze the consequences of symmetry breaking in the coupling in a network of globally coupled identical Stuart-Landau oscillators. We observe that symmetry breaking leads to increased disorderliness in the dynamical behavior of oscillatory states and consequently results in a rich variety of dynamical states. Depending on the strength of the nonisochronicity parameter, we find various dynamical states such as amplitude chimera, amplitude cluster, frequency chimera and frequency cluster states. In addition we also find disparate transition routes to recently observed chimera death state in …
We study an oscillatory medium with a nonlinear global coupling that gives rise to a harmonic mean-field oscillation with constant amplitude and frequency. Two types of cluster states are found, each undergoing a symmetry-breaking transition towards a related chimera state. We demonstrate that the diffusional coupling is non-essential for these complex dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate localized turbulence and discuss whether it can be categorized as a chimera state.
We study a large population of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to common white Gaussian noise and find analytically that the critical coupling strength between oscillators for synchronization transition decreases with an increase in the intensity of common noise. Thus, common noise promotes the onset of synchronization. Our prediction is confirmed by numerical simulations of the phase oscillators as well as of limit-cycle oscillators.
The Kuramoto model, despite its popularity as a mean-field theory for many synchronization phenomenon of oscillatory systems, is limited to a first-order harmonic coupling of phases. For higher-order coupling, there only exists a low-dimensional theory in the thermodynamic limit. In this paper, we extend the formulation used by Watanabe and Strogatz to obtain a low-dimensional description of a system of arbitrary size of identical oscillators coupled all-to-all via their higher-order modes. To demonstrate an application of the formulation, we use a second harmonic globally coupled model, with …
We formulate a theory for the collective phase description of globally coupled noisy limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Collective phase equations describing such macroscopic rhythms are derived by means of a two-step phase reduction. The collective phase sensitivity and collective phase coupling functions, which quantitatively characterize the macroscopic rhythms, are illustrated using three representative models of limit-cycle oscillators. As an important result of the theory, we demonstrate noise-induced anti-phase synchronization between macroscopic rhythms by direct n…
In this paper we discuss recent progress in research of ensembles of mean field coupled oscillators. Without an ambition to present a comprehensive review, we outline most interesting from our viewpoint results and surprises, as well as interrelations between different approaches.
Globally coupled phase oscillator models, such as the Kuramoto model, exhibit spontaneous collective synchronization. Such models can be restated in terms of interactions within and between subsets of oscillators. An approximation for the internal structure of coherent subsets of oscillators can be made based on the observations of natural ordering and uniform tidal effects. The approximation is seen to perform well for predicting the microstructure in a variety of phase oscillator models.
The collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied when the natural frequency distribution does not possess an even symmetry with respect to the average natural frequency of oscillators. We study the special case of absence of symmetry induced by a group of scaling transformations of the continuous distribution of frequencies. When coupling between oscillators is increased beyond a critical threshold favoring spontaneous synchronization, we found that the variation in the velocity of the traveling wave depends on the extent …
The subject of this paper is a system of phase-oscillators, which are globally pulse-coupled via excitatory interaction. The appearance and stability of one- and two-cluster-states is investigated for a family of unimodal phase-response-curves (PRC). The PRCs and their derivatives are assumed to be zero at the spiking point. We show that there exist stable homoclinic connections of the one-cluster state for PRCs with the maximum located shortly before the spiking point and coexisting stable two-clusters states when the maximum of the PRC is located shortly after the spike.
Model reduction techniques have been widely used to study the collective behavior of globally coupled oscillators. However, most approaches assume that there are infinitely many oscillators. Here we propose a new ansatz, based on the collective coordinate approach, that reproduces the collective dynamics of the Kuramoto model for finite networks to high accuracy, yields the same bifurcation structure in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators as previous approaches, and additionally captures the dynamics of the order parameter in the thermodynamic limit, including critical slowi…
For a system of globally pulse-coupled phase-oscillators, we derive conditions for stability of the completely synchronous state and all possible two-cluster states and explain how the different states are naturally connected via bifurcations. The coupling is modeled using the phase-response-curve (PRC), which measures the sensitivity of each oscillator's phase to perturbations. For large systems with a PRC, which turns to zero at the spiking threshold, we are able to find the parameter regions where multiple stable two-cluster states coexist and illustrate this by an example. In addition, we …
We analyze the collective dynamics of an ensemble of globally coupled, externally forced, identical mechanical oscillators with cubic nonlinearity. Focus is put on solutions where the ensemble splits into two internally synchronized clusters, as a consequence of the bistability of individual oscillators. The multiplicity of these solutions, induced by the many possible ways of distributing the oscillators between the two clusters, implies that the ensemble can exhibit multistability. As the strength of coupling grows, however, the two-cluster solutions are replaced by a state of full synchroni…
Motivated from a wide range of applications, various methods to control synchronization in coupled oscillators have been proposed. Previous studies have demonstrated that global feedback typically induces three macroscopic behaviors: synchronization, desynchronization, and oscillation quenching. However, analyzing all of these transitions within a single theoretical framework is difficult, and thus the feedback effect is only partially understood in each framework. Herein, we analyze a model of globally coupled phase oscillators exposed to global feedback, which shows all of the typical macros…
We theoretically investigate collective phase synchronization between interacting groups of globally coupled noisy identical phase oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Using the phase reduction method, we derive coupled collective phase equations describing the macroscopic rhythms of the groups from microscopic Langevin phase equations of the individual oscillators via nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. For sinusoidal microscopic coupling, we determine the type of the collective phase coupling function, i.e., whether the groups exhibit in-phase or anti-phase synchronization. We show tha…
We identify the mechanism behind the existence of intensity induced chimera states in globally coupled oscillators. We find that the effect of intensity in the system is to cause multistability by increasing the number of fixed points. This in turn increases the number of multistable attractors and we find that their stability is determined by the strength of coupling . This causes the coexistence of different collective states in the system depending upon the initial state. We demonstrate that intensity induced chimera is generic to both periodic and chaotic systems. We have discussed possibl…
A theoretical analysis is presented to show the general occurrence of phase clusters in weakly, globally coupled oscillators close to a Hopf bifurcation. Through a reductive perturbation method, we derive the amplitude equation with a higher order correction term valid near a Hopf bifurcation point. This amplitude equation allows us to calculate analytically the phase coupling function from given limit-cycle oscillator models. Moreover, using the phase coupling function, the stability of phase clusters can be analyzed. We demonstrate our theory with the Brusselator model. Experiments are carri…
The effect of time-delayed coupling on the collective behavior of a population of globally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau (GCCGL) oscillators is investigated. A detailed numerical study is carried out to study the impact of time delay on various collective states that include synchronous states, multicluster states, chaos, amplitude mediated chimeras and incoherent states. It is found that time delay can bring about significant changes in the dynamical properties of these states including their regions of existence and stability. In general, an increase in time delay is seen to lower the thre…
A model for synchronization of globally coupled phase oscillators including ``inertial'' effects is analyzed. In such a model, both oscillator frequencies and phases evolve in time. Stationary solutions include incoherent (unsynchronized) and synchronized states of the oscillator population. Assuming a Lorentzian distribution of oscillator natural frequencies, $g(Ω)$, both larger inertia or larger frequency spread stabilize the incoherent solution, thereby making harder to synchronize the population. In the limiting case $g(Ω)=δ(Ω)$, the critical coupling becomes independent of inertia. A rich…
Phase synchronization between collective oscillations exhibited by two weakly interacting groups of non-identical phase oscillators with internal and external global sinusoidal coupling of the groups is analyzed theoretically. Coupled amplitude equations describing the collective oscillations of the oscillator groups are obtained by using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and then coupled phase equations for the collective oscillations are derived by phase reduction of the amplitude equations. The collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of macroscopic phase differences between…
Synchronization in systems of coupled Kuramoto oscillators may depend on their natural frequencies, coupling, and underlying networks. In this paper, we reduce the alternatives to only one by considering identical oscillators where the only parameter that is allowed to change is the underlying network. While such a model was analyzed over the past few decades by studying the size of the basin of attraction of the synchronized state on restricted families of graphs, here we address a qualitative question on general graphs. In an analogy to resistive networks with current sources, we describe an…
We analyze mean-field models of synchronization of phase oscillators with singular couplings and subject to external random forces. They are related to the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model. Their probability densities satisfy local partial differential equations similar to the Porous Medium, Burgers and extended Burgers equations depending on the degree of singularity of the coupling. We show that Porous Medium oscillators (the most singularly coupled) do not synchronize and that (transient) synchronization is possible only at zero temperature for Burgers oscillators. The extended Burgers oscillators …
The phenomenon of slow switching in populations of globally coupled oscillators is discussed. This characteristic collective dynamics, which was first discovered in a particular class of the phase oscillator model, is a result of the formation of a heteroclinic loop connecting a pair of clustered states of the population. We argue that the same behavior can arise in a wider class of oscillator models with the amplitude degree of freedom. We also argue how such heteroclinic loops arise inevitably and persist robustly in a homogeneous population of globally coupled oscillators. Although the hete…
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly saturated mode $|α_\infty|$ on the linear growth rate $γ$. In general we find $|α_\…
A system of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to an external input is considered as a simple model of neural circuits coding external stimulus. The information coding efficiency of the system in its asynchronous state is quantified using Fisher information. The effect of coupling and noise on the information coding efficiency in the stationary state is analyzed. The relaxation process of the system after the presentation of an external input is also studied. It is found that the information coding efficiency exhibits a large transient increase before the system relaxes to the final st…
The Ott--Antonsen ansatz is a powerful tool to extract the behaviors of coupled phase oscillators, but it imposes a strong restriction on the initial condition. Herein, a systematic extension of the Ott--Antonsen ansatz is proposed to relax the restriction, enabling the systematic approximation of the behavior of a globally coupled phase oscillator system with an arbitrary initial condition. The proposed method is validated on the Kuramoto--Sakaguchi model of identical phase oscillators. The method yields cluster and chimera-like solutions that are not obtained by the conventional ansatz.
Collective behavior in large ensembles of dynamical units with non-pairwise interactions may play an important role in several systems ranging from brain function to social networks. Despite recent work pointing to simplicial structure, i.e., higher-order interactions between three or more units at a time, their dynamical characteristics remain poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of the collective dynamics of such a simplicial system, namely coupled phase oscillators with three-way interactions. The simplicial structure gives rise to a number of novel phenomena, most notably a conti…
The linear response is studied in globally coupled oscillator systems including the Kuramoto model. We develop a linear response theory which can be applied to systems whose coupling functions are generic. Based on the theory, we examine the role of asymmetry introduced to the natural frequency distribution, the coupling function, or the coupling constants. A remarkable difference appears in coexistence of the divergence of susceptibility at the critical point and a nonzero phase gap between the order parameter and the applied external force. The coexistence is not allowed by the asymmetry in …
We study ensembles of globally coupled, nonidentical phase oscillators subject to correlated noise, and we identify several important factors that cause noise and coupling to synchronize or desychronize a system. By introducing noise in various ways, we find a novel estimate for the onset of synchrony of a system in terms of the coupling strength, noise strength, and width of the frequency distribution of its natural oscillations. We also demonstrate that noise alone is sufficient to synchronize nonidentical oscillators. However, this synchrony depends on the first Fourier mode of a phase-sens…
We study the stationary dynamics of energy exchange in an ensemble of phase oscillators, coupled through a mean-field mechanical interaction and added with friction and an external periodic excitation. The degree of entrainment between different parts of the ensemble and the external forcing determines three dynamical regimes, each of them characterized by specific rates of energy exchange. Using suitable approximations, we are able to obtain analytical expressions for those rates, which are in satisfactory agreement with results from numerical integration of the equations of motion. In some o…
This paper reports the analysis of the dynamics of a model of pulse-coupled oscillators with global inhibitory coupling. The model is inspired by experiments on colonies of bacteria-embedded synthetic genetic circuits. The total population can be either of finite (arbitrary) size or infinite, and is represented by a one-dimensional profile. Profiles can be discontinuous, possibly with infinitely many jumps. Their time evolution is governed by a singular differential equation. We address the corresponding initial value problem and characterize the dynamics' main features. In particular, we prov…
We consider an ensemble of globally coupled phase oscillators whose interaction is transmitted at finite speed. This introduces time delays, which make the spatial coordinates relevant in spite of the infinite range of the interaction. We show that one-dimensional arrays synchronize in an asymptotic state where all the oscillators have the same frequency, whereas their phases are distributed in spatial structures that -in the case of periodic boundaries- can propagate, much as in coupled systems with local interactions.
We report the existence of a chimera state in an assembly of identical nonlinear oscillators that are globally linked to each other in a simple planar cross-coupled form. The rotational symmetry breaking of the coupling term appears to be responsible for the emergence of these collective states that display a characteristic coexistence of coherent and incoherent behaviour. Our finding, seen in both a collection of van der Pol oscillators and chaotic Rossler oscillators, further simplifies the existence criterion for chimeras and thereby broadens the range of their applicability to real world s…
We study synchronization in a Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, in the thermodynamic limit of large populations. We develop a method for an analytic solution of self-consistent equations describing uniformly rotating complex order parameters, both for single-branch (one possible state of locked oscillators) and multi-branch (two possible values of locked phases) entrainment. We show that synchronous states coexist with the neutrally linearly stable asynchronous regime. The latter has a finite life time for finite ensembles, this time gro…
A two-time scale asymptotic method has been introduced to analyze the multimodal mean-field Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model of oscillator synchronization in the high-frequency limit. The method allows to uncouple the probability density in different components corresponding to the different peaks of the oscillator frequency distribution. Each component evolves toward a stationary state in a comoving frame and the overall order parameter can be reconstructed by combining them. Synchronized phases are a combination of traveling waves and incoherent solutions depending on parameter values. Our results a…
The coexistence of coherently and incoherently oscillating parts in a system of identical oscillators with symmetrical coupling, i.e., a chimera state, is even observable with uniform global coupling. We address the question of the prerequisites for these states to occur in globally coupled systems. By analyzing two different types of chimera states found for nonlinear global coupling, we show that a clustering mechanism to split the ensemble into two groups is needed as a first step. In fact, the chimera states inherit properties from the cluster states in which they originate. Remarkably, th…
The condensation transition, leading to complete mutual synchronization in large populations of globally coupled chaotic Roessler oscillators, is investigated. Statistical properties of this transition and the cluster structure of partially condensed states are analyzed.
A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of glob…
The competing effect of heterogeneity and symmetry breaking coupling on the emerging dynamics in a system of N globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators is investigated. Increasing the heterogeneity, using the standard deviation of the Hopf bifurcation parameter, favors the macroscopic oscillatory state for low values of the symmetry breaking coupling and inhomogeneous steady state for larger values of the coupling. There is also a transition, tipping, to homogeneous steady state (aging state) from the macroscopic oscillatory state. The limiting factor in the diffusive coupling favors the mac…
We describe synchronization transitions in an ensemble of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, and two sources of disorder - diversity of intrinsic oscillatory frequencies and external independent noise. Based on the self-consistent formulation, we derive analytic solutions for different synchronous states. We report on various non-trivial transitions from incoherence to synchrony where possible scenarios include: simple supercritical transition (similar to classical Kuramoto model), subcritical transition with large area of bistability of incoherent and syn…
Consider any network of $n$ identical Kuramoto oscillators in which each oscillator is coupled bidirectionally with unit strength to at least $μ(n-1)$ other oscillators. There is a critical value of the connectivity, $μ_c$, such that whenever $μ>μ_c$, the system is guaranteed to converge to the all-in-phase synchronous state for almost all initial conditions, but when $μ<μ_c$, there are networks with other stable states. The precise value of the critical connectivity remains unknown, but it has been conjectured to be $μ_c=0.75$. In 2020, Lu and Steinerberger proved that $μ_c\leq 0.7889$, and Y…
We generalize the Kuramoto model of globally coupled oscillators to multifrequency communities. A situation when mean frequencies of two subpopulations are close to resonance 2:1 is considered in detail. We derive uniformly rotating solutions describing synchronization inside communities and between them. Remarkably, cross-coupling between the frequency scales can promote synchrony even when ensembles are separately asynchronous. We also show that the transition to synchrony due to the cross-coupling is accompanied by a huge multiplicity of distinct synchronous solutions what is directly relat…
We consider the transient behavior of globally coupled systems of identical pulse coupled oscillators. Synchrony develops through an aggregation phenomenon, with clusters of synchronized oscillators forming and growing larger in time. Previous work derived expressions for these time dependent clusters, when each oscillator obeyed a linear charging curve. We generalize these results to cases where the charging curves have nonlinearities
We study synchronization dynamics of a population of pulse-coupled oscillators. In particular, we focus our attention in the interplay between networks topological disorder and its synchronization features. Firstly, we analyze synchronization time $T$ in random networks, and find a scaling law which relates $T$ to networks connectivity. Then, we carry on comparing synchronization time for several other topological configurations, characterized by a different degree of randomness. The analysis shows that regular lattices perform better than any other disordered network. The fact can be understo…
We report parabolic bursting in a globally coupled network of mixed population of oscillatory and excitable Josephson junctions. The resistive-capacitive shunted junction (RCSJ) model of the superconducitng device is used for this study. We focus on the parameter regime of the junction where its dynamics is governed by the saddle-node on invariant circle (SNIC) bifurcation. In this SNIC regime, the bursting appears in a broad paramater space of the ensemble of mixed junctions. For a coupling value above a threshold, the network splits into two synchronized clusters when a reductionism approach…
We generalize the Kuramoto model for the synchronization transition of globally coupled phase oscillators to populations by incorporating an additional heterogeneity with the coupling strength, where each oscillator pair interacts with different coupling strength weighted by a genera; function of their natural frequency. The expression for the critical coupling can be straightforwardly extended to a generalized explicit formula analytically, and s self-consistency approach is developed to predict the stationary states in the thermodynamic limit. The landau damping effect is further revealed by…
We study populations of globally coupled noisy rotators (oscillators with inertia) allowing a nonequilibrium transition from a desynchronized state to a synchronous one (with the non-vanishing order parameter). The newly developed analytical approaches resulted in solutions describing the synchronous state with constant order parameter for weakly inertial rotators, including the case of zero inertia, when the model is reduced to the Kuramoto model of coupled noise oscillators. These approaches provide also analytical criteria distinguishing supercritical and subcritical transitions to the desy…
We study the robustness of self-sustained oscillatory activity in a globally coupled ensemble of excitable and oscillatory units. The critical balance to achieve collective self-sustained oscillations is analytically established. We also report a universal scaling function for the ensemble's mean frequency. Our results extend the framework of the `Aging Transition' [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 104101 (2004)] including a broad class of dynamical systems potentially relevant in biology.
We consider the nonlinear extension of the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators where the phase shift in the coupling function depends on the order parameter. A bifurcation analysis of the transition from fully synchronous state to partial synchrony is performed. We demonstrate that for small ensembles it is typically mediated by stable cluster states, that disappear with creation of heteroclinic cycles, while for a larger number of oscillators a direct transition from full synchrony to a periodic or quasiperiodic regime occurs.
Experiments and supporting theoretical analysis is presented to describe the synchronization patterns that can be observed with a population of globally coupled electrochemical oscillators close to a homoclinic, saddle-loop bifurcation, where the coupling is repulsive in the electrode potential. While attractive coupling generates phase clusters and desynchronized states, repulsive coupling results in synchronized oscillations. The experiments are interpreted with a phenomenological model that captures the waveform of the oscillations (exponential increase) followed by a refractory period. The…
We have identified the existence of globally clustered chimera states in delay coupled oscillator populations and find that these states can breathe periodically, aperiodically and become unstable depending upon the value of coupling delay. We also find that the coupling delay induces frequency suppression in the desynchronized group. We provide numerical evidence and theoretical explanations for the above results and discuss possible applications of the observed phenomena.
We suggest a definition for a type of chimera state that appears in networks of indistinguishable phase oscillators. Defining a "weak chimera" as a type of invariant set showing partial frequency synchronization, we show that this means they cannot appear in phase oscillator networks that are either globally coupled or too small. We exhibit various networks of four, six and ten indistinguishable oscillators where weak chimeras exist with various dynamics and stabilities. We examine the role of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi coupling in giving degenerate (neutrally stable) families of weak chimera states i…
We study an ensembles of globally coupled or forced identical phase oscillators subject to independent white Cauchy noise. We demonstrate, that if the oscillators are forced in several harmonics, stationary synchronous regimes can be exactly described with a finite number of complex order parameters. The corresponding distribution of phases is a product of wrapped Cauchy distributions. For sinusoidal forcing, the Ott-Antonsen low-dimensional reduction is recovered.
Large ensembles of heterogeneous oscillators often exhibit collective synchronization as a result of mutual interactions. If the oscillators have distributed natural frequencies and common shear (or nonisochronicity), the transition from incoherence to collective synchronization is known to occur at large enough values of the coupling strength. However, here we demonstrate that shear diversity cannot be counterbalanced by diffusive coupling leading to synchronization. We present the first analytical results for the Kuramoto model with distributed shear, and show that the onset of collective sy…
