On nonsimple knots in lens spaces with tunnel number one

A knot k in a closed orientable 3-manifold is called nonsimple if the exterior of k possesses a properly embedded essential surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic. We show that if k is a nonsimple prime tunnel number one knot in a lens space M (where M does not contain any embedded Klein bottles), then k is a (1,1) knot. Elements of the proof include handle addition and Dehn filling results/techniques of Jaco, Eudave-Munoz and Gordon as well as structure results of Schultens on the Heegaard splittings of graph manifolds.

Studying uniform thickness II: Transversely non-simple iterated torus knots

We prove that an iterated torus knot type fails the uniform thickness property (UTP) if and only if all of its iterations are positive cablings, which is precisely when an iterated torus knot type supports the standard contact structure. We also show that all iterated torus knots that fail the UTP support cabling knot types that are transversely non-simple.

Cabling and transverse simplicity

We study Legendrian knots in a cabled knot type. Specifically, given a topological knot type K, we analyze the Legendrian knots in knot types obtained from K by cabling, in terms of Legendrian knots in the knot type K. As a corollary of this analysis, we show that the (2,3)-cable of the (2,3)-torus knot is not transversely simple and moreover classify the transverse knots in this knot type. Legendrian Non-Simple Two-Bridge Knots

By examining knot Floer homology, we extend a result of Ozsváth and Stipsicz and show further infinitely many Legendrian and transversely non-simple knot types among two-bridge knots. Quantization of the crossing number of a knot diagram

We introduce the warping crossing polynomial of an oriented knot diagram by using the warping degrees of crossing points of the diagram. Contact surgeries and the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology

We study naturality properties of the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology under contact (+1)-surgery. This can be used as a calculational tool for the transverse invariant. As a consequence, we show that the Eliashberg-Chekanov twist knots E_n are not transversely simple for n odd and n>3.

Heegaard Floer invariants of Legendrian knots in contact three--manifolds

We define invariants of null--homologous Legendrian and transverse knots in contact 3--manifolds. The invariants are determined by elements of the knot Floer homology of the underlying smooth knot. We compute these invariants, and show that they do not vanish for certain non--loose knots in overtwisted 3--spheres. Moreover, we apply the invariants to find transversely non--simple knot types in many overtwisted contact 3--manifolds.

Patterns in odd Khovanov homology

We investigate properties of the odd Khovanov homology, compare and contrast them with those of the original (even) Khovanov homology, and discuss applications of the odd Khovanov homology to other areas of knot theory and low-dimensional topology. We show that it provides an effective upper bound on the Thurston-Bennequin number of Legendrian links and can be used to detect quasi-alternating knots. A potential application to detecting transversely non-simple knots is also mentioned.

Transverse and Legendrian invariants of cables in combinatorial link Floer homology

We study the Ozsváth-Szabó-Thurston transverse invariant in combinatorial link Floer homology for certain transverse cables $\mathscr{L}_{p,q}$ of transverse link $L$ in $S^3$. Transverse cables $\mathscr{L}_{p,q}$ are constructed from the grid diagram of $L$. The main result is $\hatθ(\mathscr{L}_{p,q})=0$ if and only if $\hatθ(L)=0$ for $\frac{q}{p}$ sufficiently large.
