Because quarks and gluons are confined within hadrons, they have a maximum wavelength of order the confinement scale. Propagators, normally calculated for free quarks and gluons using Dyson-Schwinger equations, are modified by bound-state effects in close analogy to the calculation of the Lamb shift in atomic physics. Because of confinement, the effective quantum chromodynamic coupling stays finite in the infrared. The quark condensate which arises from spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the bound state Dyson-Schwinger equation is the expectation value of the operator $\bar q q$ evaluated in the background of the fields of the other hadronic constituents, in contrast to a true vacuum expectation value. Thus quark and gluon condensates reside within hadrons. The effects of instantons are also modified. We discuss the implications of the maximum quark and gluon wavelength for phenomena such as deep inelastic scattering and annihilation, the decay of heavy quarkonia, jets, and dimensional counting rules for exclusive reactions. We also discuss implications for the zero-temperature phase structure of a vectorial SU($N$) gauge theory with a variable number $N_f$ of massless fermions.
Intersection of black hole theory and quantum chromodynamics: the gluon propagator corresponding to linear confinement at large distances and relativistic bound states in the confining SU(N)-Yang-Mills fields
We discuss the odderon in the QCD and analyze the effects of running coupling introduced in a particular way to preserve the reggeization of the gluon within the leading logarithmic description. This idea is also applied to a family of BKP states with arbitrarily number of gluons in the planar limit. The numerical analysis shows that contrary to the pomeron case where the leading states become discretized, the odderon states still remain a continuous family starting at intercept one. The following rapidity dependence of the amplitude is studied. For the pomeron-odderon system the relation betw…
We compute the photon-quark and Higgs-gluon form factors to four-loop order within massless perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. Our results constitute ready-to-use building blocks for N${}^4$LO cross sections for Drell-Yan processes and gluon-fusion Higgs boson production at the LHC. We present complete analytic expressions for both form factors and show several of the most complicated master integrals.
Instead of the often used Foldy-Wouthuysen-Tani (FWT) transformation in non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), we take a more general relation between the relativistic and non-relativistic on-shell spinors to recalculate the quark-quark-gluon vertex for heavy quarks. In comparison with the previous result using FWT, the recalculated coefficients in the NRQCD Lagrangian are different at order $1/m^3$ and new at order $1/m^4$ and $1/m^5$, where $m$ is the heavy quark mass.
The novel massive spinor-helicity formalism of Arkani-Hamed, Huang and Huang provides an elegant way to calculate scattering amplitudes in quantum chromodynamics for arbitrary quark spin projections. In this note we compute two families of tree-level QCD amplitudes with one massive quark pair and n-2 gluons. The two cases include all gluons with identical helicity and one opposite-helicity gluon being color-adjacent to one of the quarks. Our results naturally incorporate the previously known amplitudes for both quark spins quantized along one of the gluonic momenta. In the all-multiplicity for…
We determine the gluon and ghost spectral functions along with the analytic structure of the associated propagators from numerical data describing gauge correlators at space-like momenta obtained by either solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations or through lattice simulations. Our novel reconstruction technique shows the expected branch cut for the gluon and the ghost propagator, which, in the gluon case, is supplemented with a pair of complex conjugate poles. Possible implications of the existence of these poles are briefly addressed.
We study the important, yet widely overlooked, role of gluons for spin transport with a connection to local parity violation in quark gluon plasmas. We employ the formalism of quantum kinetic theory to quarks in weakly coupled quantum chromodynamics to derive the source terms for quark spin polarization. These source terms involve parity-odd correlators of dynamically generated color fields in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas and give rise to locally fluctuating axial charge currents. Our results provide a possible explanation for the spin alignment of vector mesons measured in high-energy…
