Point contacts (PC) Andreev reflection dV/dI spectra for the antiferromagnetic (T_N =6K) superconductor (Tc=11K) ErNi2B2C have been measured for the two main crystallographic directions. Observed retention of the Andreev reflection minima in dV/dI up to Tc directly points to unusual superconducting order parameter (OP) vanishing at Tc. Temperature dependence of OP was obtained from dV/dI using recent theory of Andreev reflection including pair-breaking effect. For the first time existence of a two superconducting OPs in ErNi2B2C is shown. A distinct decrease of both OPs as temperature is lowered below T_N is observed.
The problem of Andreev reflection between a normal metal and a multiband superconductor is addressed. The appropriate matching conditions for the wave function at the interface are established on the basis of an extension of quantum waveguide theory to these systems. Interference effects between different bands of the superconductor manifest themselves in the conductance and the case of FeAs superconductors is specifically considered, in the framework of a recently proposed effective two-band model, in the sign-reversed s-wave pairing scenario. Resonant transmission through surface Andreev bou…
We formulate a minimal model of point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of a normal- metal/multiband superconductor interface. The theory generalizes the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation to a multiband superconductor and it is based on the quantum waveguides theory. The proposed approach allows an analytic evaluation of the Andreev and normal reflection coefficients and thus is suitable for a data fitting of point contact experiments. The obtained differential conductance curves present distinctive features similar to the ones measured in the experiments on multiband systems, l…
The theory of Andreev conductance is formulated for junctions involving normal metals (N) and multiband superconductors (S) and applied to the case of superconductors with nodeless extended $s_{\pm}$-wave order parameter symmetry, as possibly realized in the recently discovered ferro pnictides. We find qualitative differences from tunneling into s-wave or d-wave superconductors that may help to identify such a state. First, interband interference leads to a suppression of Andreev reflection in the case of a highly transparent N/S interface and to a current deficit in the tunneling regime. Seco…
We report on a study of the superconducting order parameter in Fe(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$) thin films (with different Se contents: x=0.3, 0.4, 0.5) by means of point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS). The PCARS spectra show reproducible evidence of multiple structures, namely two clear conductance maxima associated to a superconducting gap of amplitude $Δ_E \simeq 2.75 k_B T_c$ and additional shoulders at higher energy that, as we show, are the signature of the strong interaction of charge carriers with a bosonic mode whose characteristic energy coincides with the spin-resonance energ…
We discuss very low temperature experiments on superconducting micro-coolers made of a double Normal metal - Insulator - Superconductor junction. We investigate with a high resolution the differential conductance of the micro-cooler as well as of additional probe junctions. There is an explicit crossover between the single quasi-particle current and the phase-coherent Andreev current. We establish a thermal model by considering the thermal contribution due to the Andreev current. The related increase of the electron temperature is discussed, including the influence of several parameters like t…
By measuring point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectra in the newly discovered chromium-based quasi-one-dimensional superconductor RbCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$, we find clear evidence of two superconducting components, i.e., one having a gap value of about 1.8 meV and another with a gap value of about 5 meV. Since the current injection may have components in both the direction parallel and perpendicular to the [(Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$)$^{-}$]$_\infty$ chains in the PCAR measurements, it naturally explains the two-component feature observed in this multi-band superconductor. Detailed analysis shows that …
We calculate analytically the spectrum of the Andreev bound states in a half-infinite superconducting wire with an arbitrary number of bands crossing the chemical potential. The normal state of the wire is assumed to have an antiunitary symmetry A (time reversal or its combination with a crystallographic point group operation), with A^2=-1 or +1. This symmetry may be broken by the superconducting order parameter and/or the boundary scattering. We present a model-independent proof of the existence of one Majorana mode near the end of the wire with an odd number of bands.
We report point contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re6Zr. We observe that the PCAR spectra can be fitted by taking two isotropic superconducting gaps with Delta_1 ~ 0.79 meV and Delta_2 ~ 0.22 meV respectively, suggesting that there are at least two bands which contribute to superconductivity. Combined with the observation of time reversal symmetry breaking at the superconducting transition from muon spin relaxation measurements (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 107002 (2014)), our results imply an unconventional super…
Point contact Andreev reflection studies have been conducted on FeSe single crystals by lowering the temperatures down to 0.5 K. The point contact Andreev reflection spectra were analyzed in the framework of the two-band model. As a result, the presence of two anisotropic superconducting gaps in FeSe were certainly established and their BCS-like temperature dependencies were obtained. The weights of each gap have been determined and the anisotropy parameter has been calculated. It is shown, that sub-kelvin temperatures are necessary to ascertain details of the superconducting gap structure, es…
We have investigated transport through graphene Andreev interferometers exhibiting reentrance of the superconducting proximity effect. We observed a crossover in the Andreev conductance oscillations as a function of gate voltage ($V_{BG}$). At high $V_{BG}$ the energy-dependent oscillation amplitude exhibits a scaling predicted for non-interacting electrons, which breaks down at low $V_{BG}$. The phenomenon is a manifestation of electron-electron interactions, whose main effect is to shorten the single-particle phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$. These results indicate that graphene provides a useful …
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is considered to probe the non-locality of the Majorana quasiparticles in topological superconductors. We propose here to study the CAR in multiband one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors which may or may not have chiral symmetries, and show how the CAR can be applied to identify Majorana modes in such systems. In particular, for a multiband 1D topological superconductor with approximate chiral symmetry, both the multiple Majorana and low-energy Andreev bound modes can drive the nearly zero-bias CAR, which is shown to be protected by the chiral symmet…
We study the influence of multiple bands on the properties of Josephson junctions. In particular we focus on the two gap superconductor magnesium diboride. We present a formalism to describe tunneling at a point contact between two MgB2 electrodes generalizing the transfer-matrix approach to multiple bands. A simple model is presented to determine the effective hopping amplitudes between the different energy bands as a function of the misorientation angle of the electrodes. We calculate the critical current and the current-voltage characteristics for N-I-S and S-I-S contacts with different ori…
Andreev reflection (AR) and Yanson point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) have been applied simul-taneously to study the superconducting (SC) gap and the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in a Zn single crystal. The correlation between SC gap value and EPI spectrum allowed us to establish the anisotropy of the SC gap. Evidence for multiband superconductivity in Zn is present with two gaps related as 1:1.3. We also found that the AR features are more robust against the point-contact quality than the EPI ones, possibly, due to the large coherence length in Zn compared to the typical PC size. Even for …
A recently developed theory for the problem of Andreev reflection between a normal metal (N) and a multiband superconductor (MBS) assumes that the incident wave from the normal metal is coherently transmitted through several bands inside the superconductor. Such splitting of the probability amplitude into several channels is the analogue of a quantum waveguide. Thus, the appropriate matching conditions for the wave function at the N/MBS interface are derived from an extension of quantum waveguide theory. Interference effects between the transmitted waves inside the superconductor manifest them…
We formulate a quantum waveguide theory of the Josephson effect in multiband superconductors, with special emphasis on iron-based materials. By generalizing the boundary conditions of the scattering problem, we first determine the Andreev levels spectrum and then derive an explicit expression for the Josephson current which generalizes the formula of the single band case. In deriving the results, we provide a second quantization field theory allowing to evaluate the current-phase relation and the Josephson current fluctuations in multiband systems. We present results for two different order pa…
A multiband superconductor with a conventional phonon mechanism can develop an unconventional state with a nontrivial order parameter phase relation between the individual bands. We propose that such a state can explain recent experimental results on MgCNi3, which are suggestive of both s-wave pairing symmetry and of unconventional superconductivity. We show that such a state gives rise to Andreev bound states, and to spontaneous currents, at surfaces and around impurities. We also investigate possible phase transitions between states with different order parameter symmetry.
We have investigated the elastoresistance of two FeSe${}_{1-x}$Te${}_{x}$ (x about 0.4 - 0.5) compounds that have a close chemical composition but differ significantly in electronic properties. The first compound has a negative temperature coefficient of resistance and does not show any phase transitions other than superconducting. The elastoresistance of this compound approximately follows $1/T$ low as it usually occurs in Fe(Se,S) with metallic conductivity. The second compound has a metallic type of conductivity and in addition to the superconducting transition, there is also a phase transi…
A Strongly Anisotropic Superconducting Gap in the Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$: A Study of Directional Point-Contact Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy
Crystalline FeSe is known to display strong nematic order below a weak tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition around $T_s\sim 90$K, and a superconducting transition at $T_c\sim 9K$. Recently, it was shown that electron irradiation, which creates pointlike potential scattering defects, has the surprising effect of enhancing $T_c$ while suppressing $T_s$. Here we discuss a possible scenario for such an effect, which postulates a competition between $s_\pm$ superconductivity and nematic order. The transition to the nematic state is modeled by a mean field theory of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk i…
A brief overview of the superconducting energy gap studies on 122-type family of iron pnictides is given. It seems that the situation in the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is well resolved. Most of the measurements including the presented here point-contact Andreev reflection spectra agree on existence of multiple nodeless gaps in the excitation spectrum of this multiband system. The gaps have basically two sizes - the small one with a strength up to the BCS weak coupling limit and the large one with a very strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 6 - 8. In the electron doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 the most of t…
We measure the tunneling rates and coupling coefficients for local Andreev, non-local Andreev and elastic cotunneling processes. The non-local Andreev process, giving rise to Cooper pair splitting, exhibits the same coupling coefficient as the elastic co-tunneling whereas the local Andreev process is more than two orders of magnitude stronger than the corresponding non-local one. Theory estimates describe the findings and explain the large difference in the non-local and local coupling arising from competition between electron diffusion in the superconductor and tunnel junction transparency.
We develop a theory of the non-local transport of two counter-propagating $ν= 1$ quantum Hall edges coupled via a narrow disordered superconductor. The system is self-tuned to the critical point between trivial and topological phases by the competition between tunneling processes with or without particle-hole conversion. The critical conductance is a random, sample-specific quantity with a zero average and unusual bias dependence. The negative values of conductance are relatively stable against variations of the carrier density, which may make the critical state to appear as a topological one.
Semiconductor nanowires provide promising low-dimensional systems for the study of quantum transport phenomena in combination with superconductivity. Here we investigate the competition between the Coulomb blockade effect, Andreev reflection, and quantum interference, in InAs and InP nanowires connected to aluminum-based superconducting electrodes. We compare three limiting cases depending on the tunnel coupling strength and the characteristic Coulomb interaction energy. For weak coupling and large charging energy, negative differential conductance is observed as a direct consequence of the BC…
We present point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection measurements of a superconducting epitaxial c-axis oriented nickel borocarbide film LuNi2B2C (Tc=15.9 K). The averaged value of the superconducting gap is found to be 2.6 +/-0.2 meV in the one-gap approach, whereas the two-gap approach results in 2.14+/-0.36 meV and 3.0+/-0.27 meV. The better fit of the Andreev-reflection spectra for the LuNi2B2C - Cu PC obtained by the two-gap approach provides evidence for multiband superconductivity in LuNi2B2C. For the first time, PC electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectra have been measured for this compo…
In the "ballistic" regime, the transport across a normal metal (N)/superconductor (S) point-contact is dominated by a quantum process called Andreev reflection. Andreev reflection causes an enhancement of the conductance below the superconducting energy gap, and the ratio of the low-bias and the high-bias conductance cannot be greater than 2 when the superconductor is conventional in nature. In this regime, the features associated with Andreev reflection also provide energy and momentum-resolved spectroscopic information about the superconducting phase. Here we theoretically consider various t…
Coexistence of antiferromagnetic order with superconductivity in many families of newly discovered iron-based superconductors has renewed interest to this old problem. Due to competition between the two types of order, one can expect appearance of the antiferromagnetism inside the cores of the vortices generated by the external magnetic field. The structure of a vortex in type II superconductors holds significant importance from the theoretical and the application points of view. Here we consider the internal vortex structure in a two-band s$_\pm$ superconductor near a spin-density-wave instab…
We investigate the subgap transport properties of a S-F-Ne structure. Here S (Ne) is a superconducting (normal) electrode, and F is either a ferromagnet or a normal wire in the presence of an exchange or a spin- splitting Zeeman field respectively. By solving the quasiclassical equations we first analyze the behavior of the subgap current, known as the Andreev current, as a function of the field strength for different values of the voltage, temperature and length of the junction. We show that there is a critical value of the bias voltage V * above which the Andreev current is enhanced by the s…
Ferromagnetic spin valves offer the key building blocks to integrate giant- and tunneling-magnetoresistance effects into spintronics devices. Starting from a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk approach, we theoretically investigate the impact of interfacial Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the tunneling conductance, and thereby the magnetoresistance characteristics, of ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet spin-valve junctions embedding thin superconducting spacers between the either parallel or antiparallel magnetized ferromagnets. We focus on the unique interplay between usu…
Experimental support is found for the multiband model of the superconductivity in the recently discovered system MgB2 with the transition temperature Tc = 39 K. By means of Andreev reflection evidence is obtained for two distinct superconducting energy gaps. The sizes of the two gaps (Delta_S = 2.8 meV and Delta_L = 7 meV) are respectively smaller and larger than the expected weak coupling value. Due to the temperature smearing of the spectra the two gaps are hardly distinguishable at elevated temperatures but when a magnetic field is applied the presence of two gaps can be demonstrated close …
Crossed conductance in hybrid Ferromagnet / Superconductor / Ferromagnet (FSF) structures results from the competition between normal transmission and Andreev reflection channels. Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and elastic cotunneling (EC) between the ferromagnets are dressed by local Andreev reflections, which play an important role for transparent enough interfaces and intermediate spin polarizations. This modifies the simple result previously obtained at lowest order, and can explain the sign of the crossed resistances in a recent experiment [D. Beckmann {\sl et al.}, cond-mat/0404360]. T…
We report a systematic investigation, together with a theoretical analysis, of the resistivity and Hall effect in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, over a wide doping range. We find a surprisingly great disparity between the relaxation rates of the holes and the electrons, in excess of an order of magnitude in the low-doping, low-temperature regime. The ratio of the electron to hole mobilities diminishes with temperature and doping (away from the magnetically ordered state) and becomes more conventional. We also find a straightforward explanation of the large asymmetry (…
In this work, we systematically study two phases, called Andreev $π$-phase and orbital-phase, and their influence on the Josephson effect. When the system is time-reversal invariant and centrosymmetric, these two phases only appear in the odd-parity pairings. The Andreev $π$-phase has nothing to do with the specific form of the odd-parity pairings and means an intrinsic $π$-phase between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs entering and leaving CTSCs in the Andreev reflections. The orbital-phase corresponds to the phase difference between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs with opposite spin polarization …
We study the in-gap states of the quantum dot hybridized to a conducting and superconducting electrode. The usual proximity effect suppresses electronic states over the entire subgap regime $|ω| < Δ$, where $Δ$ denotes the energy gap of superconductor. Owing to the Andreev scattering there can, however, emerge additional in-gap states whose line-broadening (inverse life-time) depends on the coupling to a normal electrode. We show that even number of such bound states appears in the quantum dot spectrum, depending on a competition between the Coulomb repulsion and the induced on-dot pairing. We…
The differential resistances $R_d=dV/dI(V)$ of point contacts between a normal metal and a c axis oriented YNi2B2C film ($T_c$ = 15.2K) in the superconducting (SC) state have been investigated. $R_d(V)$ contains clear "gap" features connected with processes of Andreev reflection at the boundary between normal metal and superconductor that allow the determination of the SC gap $Δ$ and its temperature and magnetic field dependence. A distribution of $Δ$ from $Δ_min\approx$ 1.5 meV to $Δ_max\approx$ 2.4 meV is revealed; however the critical temperature $T_c$ in all cases corresponded to that of t…
We discuss a quantum thermal machine that generates power from a thermally driven double quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting reservoirs. Energy exchange between the dots is mediated by electron-electron interactions. We can distinguish three main mechanisms within the device operation modes. In the Andreev tunneling regime, energy flows in the presence of coherent superposition of zero- and two-particle states. Despite the intrinsic electron-hole symmetry of Andreev processes, we find that the heat engine efficiency increases with increasing coupling to the superconducting reserv…
We present a numerical study of the field-angle resolved oscillations of the thermal conductivity and specific heat under rotated magnetic field in the $A_y$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$ [$A$=K,Rb,Cs,(Tl,K)] superconductors, using realistic two-band Fermi surface parameterization. Our key finding is that even for isotropic pairing on an anisotropic Fermi surface, the thermodynamic quantities exhibit substantial oscillatory behavior in the superconducting state, even much below the upper critical field. Furthermore, in multiband systems the competition of anisotropies between two Fermi surfaces can cause a …
We study properties of quantim wires with spin-orbit coupling and time reversal symmetry breaking, in normal and superconducting states. Electronic band structures are classified according to quasi-one-dimensional magnetic point groups, or magnetic classes. The latter belong to one of three distinct types, depending on the way the time reversal operation appears in the group elements. The superconducting gap functions are constructed using antiunitary operations and have different symmetry properties depending on the type of the magnetic point group. We obtain the spectrum of the Andreev bound…
An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K<Tc=11K) gives =evidence for the presence of two SC gaps. Additionally, …
Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel bo…
In order to understand the emergence of superconductivity it is useful to study and identify the various pathways leading to the destruction of superconductivity. One way is to use the increase in Coulomb-repulsion due to the increase in disorder, which overpowers the attractive interaction responsible for Cooper-pair formation. A second pathway, applicable to uniformly disordered materials, is the competition between superconductivity and Anderson localization, which leads to electronic granularity in which phase and amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter play a role. F…
We study the evolution of temperature-dependent resistivity with controlled point-like disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation in stoichiometric compositions of the "3-4-13" stannides, $(\text{Ca,Sr})_{3}(\text{Ir,Rh})_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$.Three of these cubic compounds exhibit a microscopic coexistence of charge-density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC), while $\text{Ca}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$ does not develop CDW order. As expected, the CDW transition temperature, $T_{\text{CDW}}$, is universally suppressed by irradiation in all three compositions. The superconducti…
