We present point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection measurements of a superconducting epitaxial c-axis oriented nickel borocarbide film LuNi2B2C (Tc=15.9 K). The averaged value of the superconducting gap is found to be 2.6 +/-0.2 meV in the one-gap approach, whereas the two-gap approach results in 2.14+/-0.36 meV and 3.0+/-0.27 meV. The better fit of the Andreev-reflection spectra for the LuNi2B2C - Cu PC obtained by the two-gap approach provides evidence for multiband superconductivity in LuNi2B2C. For the first time, PC electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectra have been measured for this compound. They demonstrate pronounced phonon maximum at 8.5+/-0.4meV and a second shallow one at 15.8+/-0.6 meV. The electron-phonon coupling constant estimated from the PC EPI spectra turned out to be small (~ 0.1), like in other superconducting rare-earth nickel borocarbides. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
The superconducting energy gap and quasiparticle density of states (DOS) is measured by means of Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in normal metal - superconductor point contacts. It is found that both in paramagnetic and in antiferromagnetically ordered states (Tm- and Dy-compounds) the DOS has the BCS-like form while in Er- the dip in the temperature dependence of the gap is observed at the Neel temperature. In Ho-compound, the non-BCS-like form of DOS is observed in the temperature region where the incommensurate spin density waves exist along the axes a and c . Inelastic point-contact spectr…
We report on the measurements of the superconducting order parameter in the nonmagnetic borocarbides LuNi$_2$B$_2$C and YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Andreev conductance spectra are obtained from nanoscale metallic junctions on single crystal surfaces prepared along three major crystallographic orientations: [001], [110], and [100]. The gap values extracted by the single-gap Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model follow the BCS predictions as a function of temperature and magnetic field and exhibit a small anisotropy. These observations are robust and reproducible among all the measurements on two different sets of …
An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional P…
Point contacts are used to investigate the anisotropy of the superconducting energy gap in LuNi2B2C in the ab plane and along the c axis. It is shown that the experimental curves should be described assuming that the superconducting gap is non-uniformly distributed over the Fermi surface. The largest and the smallest gaps have been estimated by two-gap fitting models. It is found that the largest contribution to the point-contact conductivity in the c direction is made by a smaller gap and, in the ab plane by a larger gap. The deviation from the one-gap BCS model is pronounced in the temperatu…
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) function with a dominant maximum around 12meV and a further weak structure (kink or shallow broad maximum) at higher energy at about 50meV. Other phonon maxima at 20, 24 and 32meV specified in the phonon DOS of YNi2B2C by neutron measurements [PRB, V.55, 9058 (1997)] are not resolved in the PC spectra pointing out to the main role of the low energy phonon…
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5 meV for the a di…
An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K<Tc=11K) gives =evidence for the presence of two SC gaps. Additionally, …
We report on the spectra of point-contacts made on Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_2$ thin films. Besides a clear evidence for the superconducting gap, we discuss the origin of specific features, such as resistance peaks at the gap voltage and the occurrence of a two-steps resistance decrease.
The superconducting energy gap in $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ has been investigated using a point-contact technique based on the Andreev reflection from a normal (N)-superconductor (S) boundary, where N is Ag. The observed differential resistance $dV/dI$ is well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory based on the BSC density of states with zero broadening parameter. Typically, the intensity of the gap structure amounts to several percentage of the normal state resistance, which is an order of magnitude less than predicted by the theory. For $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ with $T_c<T_N$ (the Neel temper…
Point contact tunneling (PCT) and low energy muon spin rotation (LE-muSR) are used to probe, on the same samples, the surface superconducting properties of micrometer thick niobium films deposited onto copper substrates using different sputtereing techniques: diode, dc magnetron (dcMS) and HIPIMS. The combined results are compared to radio-frequency tests performances of RF cavities made with the same processes. Degraded surface superconducting properties are found to yield lower quality factors and stronger Q slope. In addition, both techniques find evidence for surface paramagnetism on all s…
We have measured magnetic response of second-generation high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3Ox wire and Nb thin film in perpendicular ac field as a function of temperature. We compare experimental complex ac susceptibility to the calculated susceptibility based on the model of Bean's critical-state response in two-dimensional (2D) disk in perpendicular field. The harmonic analysis is needed for comparison between the model and the experimental data. We present a method of linking model and experimental susceptibility. Good agreement of experimental susceptibility with model susceptibility o…
Point-contact spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing superconductors. One of the most common observations in the point-contact spectra on the recently discovered ferropnictide superconductors is a large conductance asymmetry with respect to voltage across the point-contact. In this paper we show that the antisymmetric part of the point-contact spectrum between a silver tip and an epitaxial thin film of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_2$As$_2$ shows certain unique features. These features have an interesting evolution with increasing temperature up to a temperature that is 30% larger than the …
A novel approach to intrinsic Josephson-detection of far infrared radiation is reported utilizing near-zone field effects at electric contacts on c-axis oriented YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta films. While only a bolometric signal was observed focusing the radiation far off the contacts on c-axis normal films, irradiating the edge of contacts yielded an almost wavelength independent fast signal showing the characteristic intensity dependence of Josephson-detection. The signal is attributed to a c-axis parallel component of the electric radiation field being generated in the near-zone field of diffraction …

In this paper we highlight the advantages of using point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) in multigap superconductors like MgB_2, both as a fundamental research tool and as a non-destructive diagnostic technique for the optimization of thin-film characteristics. We first present some results of crucial fundamental interest obtained by directional PCS in MgB_2 single crystals, for example the temperature dependence of the gaps and of the critical fields and the effect of a magnetic field on the gap amplitudes. Then, we show how PCS can provide useful information about the surface properties of MgB_2 …
Superconducting films in contact with non-superconducting regular arrays can exhibit commensurability effects between the vortex lattice and the unit cell of the pinning array. These matching effects yield a slowdown of the vortex flow and the corresponding dissipation decrease. The superconducting samples are Nb films grown on Si substrates. We have studied these matching effects with the array on top, embedded or threading the Nb superconducting films and using different materials (Si, Cu, Ni, Py dots and dots fabricated with Co/Pd multilayers). These hybrids allow studying the contribution …
Point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection (AR) measurements of the superconducting gap in iron-oxipnictide ReFeAsO_{1-x}F_x (Re=La, Sm) films have been carried out. The value of the gap is distributed in the range 2Δ\simeq 5-10 meV (for Re=Sm) with a maximum in the distribution around 6 meV. Temperature dependence of the gap Δ(T) can be fitted well by BCS curve giving reduced gap ratio 2Δ/kT_c^*\simeq 3.5 (here T_c^* is the critical temperature from the BCS fit). At the same time, an expected second larger gap feature was difficult to resolve distinctly on the AR spectra making determination relia…
e report measurements of long ranged supercurrents through ferromagnetic and fully spin-polarized CrO$_2$ deposited on TiO$_2$ substrates. In earlier work, we found supercurrents in films grown on sapphire but not on TiO$_2$. Here we employed a special contact arrangement, consisting of a Ni/Cu sandwich between the film and the superconducting amorphous Mo$_{70}$Ge$_{30}$ electrodes. The distance between the contacts was almost a micrometer, and we find the critical current density to be significantly higher than found in the films deposited on sapphire. We argue this is due to spin mixing in …
The differential resistances $R_d=dV/dI(V)$ of point contacts between a normal metal and a c axis oriented YNi2B2C film ($T_c$ = 15.2K) in the superconducting (SC) state have been investigated. $R_d(V)$ contains clear "gap" features connected with processes of Andreev reflection at the boundary between normal metal and superconductor that allow the determination of the SC gap $Δ$ and its temperature and magnetic field dependence. A distribution of $Δ$ from $Δ_min\approx$ 1.5 meV to $Δ_max\approx$ 2.4 meV is revealed; however the critical temperature $T_c$ in all cases corresponded to that of t…
Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel bo…
We have studied the structure of the superconducting gap in MgB2 thin films by means of point-contact spectroscopy using a gold tip. The films were produced by depositing pure boron on a sapphire substrate, using e-beam evaporation, followed by reaction with magnesium vapour. The films have a Tc of 38.6 +- 0.3 K and resistivity of about 20 microOhm cm at 40 K. The point-contact spectra prove directly the existence of a multi-valued order parameter in MgB2, with two distinct values of the gap, DELTA1=2.3+-0.3 meV and DELTA2=6.2+-0.7 meV at 4.2 K. Analysis of the spectra in terms of the Blonder-…
Biaxially textured LuNi2BC thin films with Tc up to 15.8 K and a residual resistivity ratio up to 15 have been prepared. The films were deposited on MgO(110) substrates using pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric target. Via the precise control of the deposition rate, a biaxial texture is favored within a broad range of the deposition temperature. The full epitaxial relationship between the borocarbide film, the \luo interface layer and the substrate is (110)[001]MgO II (110)[001]Lu2O3 II (001)[100]LuNi2B2C. A very sharp in--plane alignment of about 1\textdegree and an out--of--plane o…
The superconducting order parameter and electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in a MgB$_{2}$ c-axis oriented thin film are investigated by point contacts (PCs). Two superconducting gaps $Δ_{Small}\approx 2.6$ meV and $Δ_{Large}\approx 7.4$ meV have been established, which fairly well correspond to the theoretical gap ratio 1:3. The reconstructed PC EPI function along c-axis has above 30 meV similarities with the phonon DOS, while a pronounced maximum around 20 meV is resolved pointing out that the low frequency phonon mode can be of importance for pairing. We have estimated the Fermi velocity in M…
High-impedance contacts made on the surface of Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_2$ superconducting thin films systematically display a zero-bias anomaly. We consider two-level systems (TLS) as the origin of this anomaly. We observe that the contribution of some TLS to the contact resistance is weakened by a magnetic field. We show that this could result from the increase of the TLS relaxation rate in the superconducting state, due to its ability to create pairs of quasiparticles out of the condensate, when located close to the surface of the film.
Superconducting tips of YBa$_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-x}$ were used to perform point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy on half-metallic CrO$_{2}$ thin films. At 4.2K, strong suppression of the d-wave Andreev reflection characteristics was observed, consistent with the high spin polarization of CrO$_{2}$. Our technique was validated by comparison with data taken on non-magnetic Au films, and with data taken by superconducting Pb tips. The point contacts were estimated to be $\lesssim$ 10nm in size, attesting to their ballistic and microscopic nature. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of u…
We have analyzed about 100 voltage-dependent differential resistance dV/dI(V) curves of metallic point contacts between c-axis oriented MgB$_2$ thin film and Ag, which exhibit clear Andreev reflection features connected with the superconducting gap. About one half of the curves show the presence of a second larger gap. The histogram of the double-gap distribution reveals distinct maxima at 2.4 and 7 meV, while curves with a single-gap features result in more broad maximum at 3.5 meV. The double-gap distribution is in qualitative agreement with the distribution of gap values over the Fermi surf…
We present a microscopic theory of the superconducting proximity effect in a semiconducting thin film with spin-orbit interaction ($N_{SO}$) in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that an effective 1D Hamiltonian which describes induced superconductivity in $N_{SO}$ in contact with a usual $s$-wave superconductor possesses not only spin-singlet induced superconducting order parameter term, as commonly adopted, but spin triplet order parameter term also. Using this new effective Hamiltonian we confirm previous results for a normal current across contacts of $N_{SO}$ with a normal metal a…
A system comprising two superconducting thin films connected by a point contact is considered. The contact resistance is calculated as a function of temperature and film geometry, and is found to vanish rapidly with temperature, according to a universal, nearly activated form, becoming strictly zero only at zero temperature. At the lowest temperatures, the activation barrier is set primarily by the superfluid stiffness in the films, and displays only a weak (i.e., logarithmic) temperature dependence. The Josephson effect is thus destroyed, albeit only weakly, as a consequence of the power-law-…
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 1…
We report on a study of the superconducting order parameter in Fe(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$) thin films (with different Se contents: x=0.3, 0.4, 0.5) by means of point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS). The PCARS spectra show reproducible evidence of multiple structures, namely two clear conductance maxima associated to a superconducting gap of amplitude $Δ_E \simeq 2.75 k_B T_c$ and additional shoulders at higher energy that, as we show, are the signature of the strong interaction of charge carriers with a bosonic mode whose characteristic energy coincides with the spin-resonance energ…
The dc Josephson effect refers to the dissipationless electrical current -- the supercurrent -- that can be sustained across a weak link connecting two bulk superconductors. This effect is a probe of the fundamental nature of the superconducting state. Here, we analyze the case of two superconducting thin films connected by a point contact. Remarkably, the Josephson effect is absent at nonzero temperature, and the resistance across the contact is nonzero. Moreover, the point contact resistance is found to vary with temperature in a nearly activated fashion, with a UNIVERSAL energy barrier dete…
We present results of in field directional point contact spectroscopy (DPCS) study in the quaternary borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C, which is characterized by a highly anisotropic superconducting gap function. For I||a, the superconducting energy gap (D), decreases linearly with magnetic field and vanishes around 3.25T which is well below the upper critical field (Hc2~6T) measured at the same temperature (2.2K). For I||c, on the other hand, D decreases weakly with magnetic field but the broadening parameter (G) increases rapidly with magnetic field with the absence of any resolvable featur…
We propose a model to explain power dissipation leading to the formation of hot spots in the inner walls of niobium thin film superconducting RF cavities. The physical mechanism that we explore is due to the constriction of surface electrical current flow at grain interface boundaries. This constriction creates an additional electrical contact resistance which induces localized punctual heat dissipation. The temperature at these spots is derived; and the electrical contact resistance is shown to depend on the magnetic field, on the gain contact size over which dissipation occurs, and on other …
Granular aluminium is a high kinetic inductance thin film superconductor which, when formed into nanowires can undergo an intrinsic electromigration process. We use a combination of experimental and computational approaches to investigate the role of grain morphology and distribution in granular aluminium thin films, when formed into nanowire constrictions. Treating the granular aluminium film as a network of randomly distributed resistors with parameters motivated by the film microstructure allows us to model the electrical characteristics of the nanowires. This model provides estimates of th…
