An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K<Tc=11K) gives =evidence for the presence of two SC gaps. Additionally, a distinct decrease of both gaps is revealed for R = Er in the antiferromagnetic (AF) state. For R = Tm (TN=1.5K<Tc=10.5K) a decrease of the SC gap is observed below 4-5K, while for R = Dy (TN=10.5K>Tc=6.5K) the SC gap has a BCS-like dependence in the AF state. The SC gap for R = Ho (TN=5.2K<Tc=8.5K) exhibits below T*=5.6K a single-band BCS-like dependence vanishing above T*, where a specific magnetic order occurs. The difference in the SC gap behavior in the title compounds is attributed to different AF ordering.
We present scanning tunneling spectroscopy and microscopy measurements at low temperatures in the borocarbide materials RNi2B2C (R=Y, Lu). The characteristic strong coupling structure due to the pairing interaction is unambiguously resolved in the superconducting density of states. It is located at the superconducting gap plus the energy corresponding to a phonon mode identified in previous neutron scattering experiments. These measurements also show that this mode is coupled to the electrons through a highly anisotropic electron-phonon interaction originated by a nesting feature of the Fermi …
In this study pseudoquaternary rare-earth nickel borocarbide superconductors RxR'1-xNi2B2C have been investigated predominantly in the diluted limit x << 1 or (1 x) << 1. In all of these materials structural disorder results in a reduction of the superconducting transition temperature Tc . Depending on the selection of the rare earth elements R and R' this disorder induced deterioration of superconductivity is combined with magnetic pair breaking of Abrikosov-Gorkov type or pair breaking of non-magnetic impurities in antiferromagnetic superconductors (Morozov-type of pair breaking).
In the work the analysis of crystal chemical researches of nickel borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = rare earth) is given. The reasons of representation of dependence of Tc from crystal chemical parameters by two separate curves for magnetic and nonmagnetic R are considered. Common for all R dependences of Tc from crystal chemical parameters similar existing in layered quasi-two-dimensional systems (HTSC cuprates and diborides) are established. The absence of influence on borocarbides Tc of magnetic properties R is determined. On the basis of the found correlations the radii of a number of rare earths …
An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional P…
Point contacts are used to investigate the anisotropy of the superconducting energy gap in LuNi2B2C in the ab plane and along the c axis. It is shown that the experimental curves should be described assuming that the superconducting gap is non-uniformly distributed over the Fermi surface. The largest and the smallest gaps have been estimated by two-gap fitting models. It is found that the largest contribution to the point-contact conductivity in the c direction is made by a smaller gap and, in the ab plane by a larger gap. The deviation from the one-gap BCS model is pronounced in the temperatu…
We present point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection measurements of a superconducting epitaxial c-axis oriented nickel borocarbide film LuNi2B2C (Tc=15.9 K). The averaged value of the superconducting gap is found to be 2.6 +/-0.2 meV in the one-gap approach, whereas the two-gap approach results in 2.14+/-0.36 meV and 3.0+/-0.27 meV. The better fit of the Andreev-reflection spectra for the LuNi2B2C - Cu PC obtained by the two-gap approach provides evidence for multiband superconductivity in LuNi2B2C. For the first time, PC electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectra have been measured for this compo…
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5 meV for the a di…
In this paper we have studied the effect of external magnetic field in the co-existing phase of superconducting and anti-ferromagnetism of rare earth nickel borocarbides. The anti-ferromagnetism in these systems might have originated due to both localized 'f' electrons as well as itinerant electrons which are responsible for conduction. On the other hand, superconductivity is due to spin density wave, arising out of Fermi surface instability. The anti-ferromagnetism order is mostly influenced by hybridization of the 'f' electron with the conduction electron. Here we have obtained the dependenc…
We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature…
The superconducting energy gap and quasiparticle density of states (DOS) is measured by means of Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in normal metal - superconductor point contacts. It is found that both in paramagnetic and in antiferromagnetically ordered states (Tm- and Dy-compounds) the DOS has the BCS-like form while in Er- the dip in the temperature dependence of the gap is observed at the Neel temperature. In Ho-compound, the non-BCS-like form of DOS is observed in the temperature region where the incommensurate spin density waves exist along the axes a and c . Inelastic point-contact spectr…
We present here an overview of thermal conductivity behavior in magnetic superconductors: rare-earth nickel borocarbide intermetallic compounds, RNi_{2}B_{2}C, and the 2122 rare-earth rutheno-cuprates. The borocarbide family of intermetallics exhibits the large variety of phenomena - only superconductivity (R = Y, Lu), coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order (R = Tm, Er, Ho, Lu), only magnetic order (R = Tb, Gd), and heavy fermion behavior (R = Yb) - within the same crystal structure. The rutheno-cuprate Eu_{1.5}Ce_{0.5}RuSr_2Cu_{2}O_{10-δ} exhibits coexistence of weak ferromagneti…
We present new measurements about the tunneling conductance in the borocarbide superconductor TmNi$_2$B$_2$C. The results show a very good agreement with weak coupling BCS theory, without any lifetime broadening parameter, over the whole sample surface. We detect no particular change of the tunneling spectroscopy below 1.5K, when both the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the superconducting order coexist.
The exotic superconductors, defined as those which follow the phenomenological trend of Uemura (Tc approximately proportional to penetration depth^-2), presently constitute the most broad and general class of superconductors which can reasonably be considered "similar to the high-Tc cuprates". It is therefore of much interest to determine the forms of their pairing gap functions. We examine evidence for the gap forms in non-cuprate exotics, and demonstrate some general features. The cubic materials often have highly anisotropic gaps. The planar materials tend to have even stronger gap anisotro…
The point-contact (PC) spectra of the Andreev reflection dV/dI curves of the superconducting rare-earth nickel borocarbide ErNi2B2C (Tc=11 K) have been analyzed in the "one-gap" and "two-gap" approximations using the generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (GBTK) model and the Beloborod'ko (BB) model allowing for the pair-breaking effect of magnetic impurities. Experimental and calculated curves have been compared not only in shape, but in magnitude as well, which provide more reliable data for determining the temperature dependence of the energy gap (or superconducting order parameter) Δ(T). The…
Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].
We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies revealing that the lattice of thulium borocarbide is distorted below T_Q = 13.5 K at zero field. T_Q increases and the amplitude of the displacements is drastically enhanced, by a factor of 10 at 60 kOe, when a magnetic field is applied along [100]. The distortion occurs at the same wave vector as the antiferromagnetic ordering induced by the a-axis field. A model is presented that accounts for the properties of the quadrupolar phase and explains the peculiar behavior of the antiferromagnetic ordering previously observed in this compound.
We present extensive 75As NMR and NQR data on the superconducting arsenides PrFeAs0.89F0.11 (Tc=45 K), LaFeAsO0.92F0.08 (Tc=27 K), LiFeAs (Tc = 17 K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc = 31.5 K) single crystal, and compare with the nickel analog LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 (Tc=4.0 K) . In contrast to LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 where the superconducting gap is shown to be isotropic, the spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the Fe-arsenides decreases below Tc with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures. The Knight shift decreases below Tc and shows a step-wise T variation as well. These results ind…
We propose the parent compound of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ as a self-doped Mott insulator, in which the low-density Nd-$5d$ conduction electrons couple to localized Ni-3$% d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons to form Kondo spin singlets at low temperatures. This proposal is motivated with our analyses of the reported resistivity and Hall coefficient data in the normal state, showing logarithmic temperature dependence at low temperatures. In the strong Kondo coupling limit, we derive a generalized $t$-$J$ model with both Kondo singlets and nickel holons m…
The superconducting energy gap in $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ has been investigated using a point-contact technique based on the Andreev reflection from a normal (N)-superconductor (S) boundary, where N is Ag. The observed differential resistance $dV/dI$ is well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory based on the BSC density of states with zero broadening parameter. Typically, the intensity of the gap structure amounts to several percentage of the normal state resistance, which is an order of magnitude less than predicted by the theory. For $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ with $T_c<T_N$ (the Neel temper…
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 1…

The recent observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has brought intense debate on the established knowledge of unconventional superconductivity based on the cuprates. Despite many similarities, the nickelates differ from the cuprates in many characteristics, the most notable one among which is the magnetism. Instead of a canonical antiferromagnetic Mott insulator as the undoped cuprates, from which the superconductivity is generally believed to arise upon doping, the undoped nickelates show no sign of magnetic ordering in experiments. Through a combined density functional …
Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel bo…
Despite the recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films, the absence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in their bulk materials remain a puzzle. Here we report the $^{1}$H NMR measurements on powdered Nd$_{0.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$NiO$_2$ samples by taking advantage of the enriched proton concentration after hydrogen annealing. We find a large full width at half maximum of the spectrum, which keeps increasing with decreasing the temperature and exhibits an upturn behavior at low temperatures. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{1}T_1$ is strongly enhanced w…
We study the behavior of magnetic superconductors which involve a local attractive interaction between electrons, and a coupling between local moments and the electrons. We solve this `Hubbard-Kondo' model through a variational minimization at zero temperature and validate the results via a Monte Carlo based on static auxiliary field decomposition of the Hubbard interaction. Over a magnetic coupling window that widens with increasing attractive interaction the ground state supports simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order. The pairing amplitude remains s-wave like, without significant s…
The large antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in the parent high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors is believed to play a crucial role in pairing the superconducting carriers. The recent observation of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite-layer (IL-) NdNiO$_2$ brings to the fore the relevance of magnetic coupling in high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors, particularly because no magnetic ordering is observed in the undoped IL-NdNiO$_2$ unlike in parent copper oxides. Here, we investigate the electronic structure and the nature of magnetic exchange in IL-NdNiO$_2$ using state-of-the-art many-bod…
The parent compound of high-Tc superconducting cuprates is a unique Mott state consisting of layers of spin-1/2 ions arranged on a square lattice and with a record high antiferromagnetic coupling within the layers. Compounds with similar characteristics have long been searched for. Nickelates and iridates had been proposed as cuprate analogs but so far have not reached a satisfactory similarity. Here we use a combination of experimental and theoretical tools to show that the commercial compound AgF2 is an excellent cuprate analog with remarkably similar electronic parameters to La2CuO4 but lar…
