We discuss very low temperature experiments on superconducting micro-coolers made of a double Normal metal - Insulator - Superconductor junction. We investigate with a high resolution the differential conductance of the micro-cooler as well as of additional probe junctions. There is an explicit crossover between the single quasi-particle current and the phase-coherent Andreev current. We establish a thermal model by considering the thermal contribution due to the Andreev current. The related increase of the electron temperature is discussed, including the influence of several parameters like the phase-coherence length or the tunnel junction transparency.
Thermo-electric transport at the nano-scale is a rapidly developing topic, in particular in superconductor-based hybrid devices. In this review paper, we first discuss the fundamental principles of electronic cooling in mesoscopic superconducting hybrid structures, the related limitations and applications. We review recent work performed in Grenoble on the effects of Andreev reflection, photonic heat transport, phonon cooling, as well as on an innovative fabrication technique for powerful coolers.
We have studied hybrid superconducting micro-coolers made of a double Superconductor-Insulator-Normal metal tunnel junction. Under subgap conditions, the Andreev current is found to dominate the single-particle tunnel current. We show that the Andreev current introduces additional dissipation in the normal metal equivalent to Joule heating. By analyzing quantitatively the heat balance in the system, we provide a full description of the evolution of the electronic temperature with the voltage. The dissipation induced by the Andreev current is found to dominate the quasiparticle tunneling-based …
Non-dissipative Josephson current through nanoscale superconducting constrictions is carried by spectroscopically sharp energy states, so-called Andreev bound states. Although theoretically predicted almost 40 years ago, no direct spectroscopic evidence of these Andreev bound states exists to date. We propose a novel type of spectroscopy based on embedding a superconducting constriction, formed by a single-level molecule junction, in a microwave QED cavity environment. In the electron-dressed cavity spectrum we find a polariton excitation at twice the Andreev bound state energy, and a supercon…
Understanding the subgap behavior of Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions is important in order to be able to accurately model the thermal properties of the junctions. Hekking and Nazarov developed a theory in which NIS subgap current in thin-film structures can be modeled by multiple Andreev reflections. In their theory, the current due to Andreev reflections depends on the junction area and the junction resistance area product. We have measured the current due to Andreev reflections in NIS tunnel junctions for various junction sizes and junction resistance area products and…
Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy was performed on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, down to 90mK and up to 3Tesla. The conductance spectra showed multiple structures, including zero-bias peaks and spectral dips, which are interpreted as signatures of multiple pairing gaps, one clearly having nodes. Samples with 2% Ru replacing Os were also measured, showing pronounced spectral humps consistent with the emergence of a non-nodal gap. Detailed analysis of the spectral evolution revealed a magnetic field-\emph{vs.}-temperature phase diagram for P…
We use a superconducting microresonator as a cavity to sense absorption of microwaves by a superconducting quantum point contact defined by surface gates over a proximitized two-dimensional electron gas. Renormalization of the cavity frequency with phase difference across the point contact is consistent with adiabatic coupling to Andreev bound states. Near $π$ phase difference, we observe random fluctuations in absorption with gate voltage, related to quantum interference-induced modulations in the electron transmission. We identify features consistent with the presence of single Andreev bound…
We present a method to identify distinct tunneling modes in tunable superconducting tunnel junction composed of superconducting tip and sample in scanning tunneling microscope. Combining the measurement of the relative decay constant of tunneling current extracted from I-V-z spectroscopy with its statistical analysis over the atomic disorders in the sample surface, we identified the crossover of tunneling modes between single quasiparticle tunneling, multiple Andreev reflection, and Josephson tunneling with respect to the bias voltage. The method enables one to determine the particular tunneli…
We have measured and modeled, using three different approaches, the tunneling current in a Nb/NbxOy/Ni planar tunnel junction. The experimental data could be fitted and the correct current polarization could be extracted using a simple quasiclassical model, even in the absence of an applied magnetic field. We also discuss the microscopic structure of the barrier.
We present here an extensive theoretical analysis of the supercurrent of a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transparency in the presence of a microwave field. Our study is mainly based on two different approaches: a two-level model that describes the dynamics of the Andreev bound states in these systems and a fully microscopic method based on the Keldysh-Green function technique. This combination provides both a deep insight into the physics of irradiated Josephson junctions and quantitative predictions for arbitrary range of parameters. The main predictions of our analysis are: (i) …
Josephson junctions based on semiconductor nanowires are potential building blocks for electrically tunable qubit structures, e.g. the gatemon or the Andreev qubit. However, an actual realization requires the thorough investigation of the intrinsic excitation spectrum. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of low-loss superconducting microwave circuits that combine high quality factors with a well-controlled gate architecture by utilizing a flip-chip approach. This platform is then used to perform single-tone and two-tone experiments on Andreev states in in-situ grown InAs/Al core/half-shell na…
Superconducting tips of YBa$_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-x}$ were used to perform point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy on half-metallic CrO$_{2}$ thin films. At 4.2K, strong suppression of the d-wave Andreev reflection characteristics was observed, consistent with the high spin polarization of CrO$_{2}$. Our technique was validated by comparison with data taken on non-magnetic Au films, and with data taken by superconducting Pb tips. The point contacts were estimated to be $\lesssim$ 10nm in size, attesting to their ballistic and microscopic nature. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of u…
We investigate the low-energy theory of a one-dimensional finite capacitance topological Josephson junction. Charge fluctuations across the junction couple to resonant microwave fields and can be used to probe microscopic excitations such as Majorana and Andreev bound states. This marriage between localized microscopic degrees of freedom and macroscopic dynamics of the superconducting phase, leads to unique spectroscopic patterns which allow us to reveal the presence of Majorana fermions among the low-lying excitations.
We have performed microwave spectroscopy of Andreev states in superconducting weak links tailored in an InAs-Al (core-full shell) epitaxially-grown nanowire. The spectra present distinctive features, with bundles of four lines crossing when the superconducting phase difference across the weak link is 0 or $π.$ We interpret these as arising from zero-field spin-split Andreev states. A simple analytical model, which takes into account the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a nanowire containing several transverse subbands, explains these features and their evolution with magnetic field. Our result…
We develop a detailed microscopic theory describing dc Josephson effect and Andreev bound states in superconducting junctions with a half-metal. In such systems the supercurrent is caused by triplet pairing states emerging due to spin-flip scattering at the interfaces between superconducting electrodes and the half-metal. For sufficiently clean metals we provide a detailed non-perturbative description of the Josephson current at arbitrary transmissions and spin-flip scattering parameters for both interfaces. Our analysis demonstrates that the behavior of both the Josephson current and Andreev …
We present a microscopic theory for the current through a tunnel Josephson junction coupled to a non-linear environment, which consists of an Andreev two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator. It models a recent experiment [Bretheau, Girit, Pothier, Esteve, and Urbina, Nature (London) 499, 312 (2013)] on photon spectroscopy of Andreev bound states in a superconducting atomic-size contact. We find the eigenenergies and eigenstates of the environment and derive the current through the junction due to inelastic Cooper pair tunneling. The current-voltage characteristic reveals the transiti…
With the aid of the Keldysh effective action technique we develop a microscopic theory describing Andreev level spectroscopy experiments in non-tunnel superconducting contacts. We derive an effective impedance of such contacts which accounts for the presence of Andreev levels in the system. At subgap bias voltages and low temperatures inelastic Cooper pair tunneling is accompanied by transitions between these levels resulting in a set of sharp current peaks. We evaluate the intensities of such peaks, establish their dependence on the external magnetic flux piercing the structure and estimate t…

We measure the excitation spectrum of a superconducting atomic contact. In addition to the usual continuum above the superconducting gap, the single particle excitation spectrum contains discrete, spin-degenerate Andreev levels inside the gap. Quasiparticle excitations are induced by a broadband on-chip microwave source and detected by measuring changes in the supercurrent flowing through the atomic contact. Since microwave photons excite quasiparticles in pairs, two types of transitions are observed: Andreev transitions, which consists of putting two quasiparticles in an Andreev level, and tr…
We propose a microscopic model of critical current noise in Josephson-junctions based on individual trapping-centers in the tunnel barrier hybridized with electrons in the superconducting leads. We calculate the noise exactly in the limit of no on-site Coulomb repulsion. Our result reveals a noise spectrum that is dramatically different from the usual Lorentzian assumed in simple models. We show that the noise is dominated by sharp subgap resonances associated to the formation of pairs of Andreev bound states, thus providing a possible explanation for the spurious two-level systems (microreson…
We have measured the tunnelling current in Nb/Nb$_x$O$_y$/Ni planar tunnel junctions at different temperatures. The junctions are in the intermediate transparency regime. We have extracted the current polarization of the metal/ferromagnet junction without applying a magnetic field. We have used a simple theoretical model, that provides consistent fitting parameters for the whole range of temperatures analyzed. We have also been able to gain insight into the microscopic structure of the oxide barriers of our junctions.%

Nonequilibrium effects and their impact on a charge transport in superconducting ballistic weak links biased by an ac voltage are investigated within the framework of the Keldysh technique. We demonstrate that the microwave field destroys the phase coherence during the multiple Andreev reflection cycle and leads to the effective cooling of subgap quasiparticles accelerated due to multiple Andreev reflection. For small bias voltages this effect results in a strong supression of both the excess current and the conductance of the weak link. In the opposite limit of large bias voltages the excess …
We have successfully fabricated Cu/AlOx-Al/Nb normal-metal/insulator/superconductor tunnel junction devices with a high value of the superconducting gap (up to $\sim 1$ mV), using electron-beam lithography and angle evaporation techniques in the sub-micron scale. The subgap conductance of these junctions shows the expected strong temperature dependence, rendering them suitable for thermometry all the way from 100 mK to 6 K. In addition, some direct electronic cooling of the normal metal was also seen at bias values near the gap edge. The device performance was strongly influenced by the detail…
A study is presented concerning the influence of flicker noise in the junction transparency on coherent transport in Andreev states. The amount of dephasing is estimated for a microwave-activated quantum interferometer. Possibilities of experimentally investigating the coupling between a superconducting quantum point contact and its electromagnetic environment are discussed.
With the aid of the Keldysh technique we develop a microscopic theory of non-local electron transport in three-terminal NSN structures consisting of a chaotic superconducting quantum dot attached to one superconducting and two normal electrodes. Our theory fully accounts for non-equilibrium effects and disorder in a superconducting terminal. We go beyond perturbation theory in tunneling and derive a general expression for the system conductance matrix which remains valid in both weak and strong tunneling limits. We demonstrate that the proximity effect yields a decrease of crossed Andreev refl…
The modern understanding of the Josephson effect in mesosopic devices derives from the physics of Andreev bound states, fermionic modes that are localized in a superconducting weak link. Recently, Josephson junctions constructed using semiconducting nanowires have led to the realization of superconducting qubits with gate-tunable Josephson energies. We have used a microwave circuit QED architecture to detect Andreev bound states in such a gate-tunable junction based on an aluminum-proximitized InAs nanowire. We demonstrate coherent manipulation of these bound states, and track the bound-state …
The superconducting proximity effect in semiconductor nanowires has recently enabled the study of new superconducting architectures, such as gate-tunable superconducting qubits and multiterminal Josephson junctions. As opposed to their metallic counterparts, the electron density in semiconductor nanosystems is tunable by external electrostatic gates providing a highly scalable and in-situ variation of the device properties. In addition, semiconductors with large $g$-factor and spin-orbit coupling have been shown to give rise to exotic phenomena in superconductivity, such as $φ_0$ Josephson jun…
In highly resistive superconducting tunnel junctions, excess subgap current is usually observed and is often attributed to microscopic "pinholes" in the tunnel barrier. We have studied the subgap current in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) and superconductor-insulator-normal-metal (SIN) junctions. In Al/AlOx/Al junctions, we observed a decrease of 2 orders of magnitude in the current upon the transition from the SIS to the SIN regime, where it then matched theory. In Al/AlOx/Cu junctions, we also observed generic features of coherent diffusive Andreev transport in a junction with …
Coherent control of quantum states has been demonstrated in a variety of superconducting devices. In all these devices, the variables that are manipulated are collective electromagnetic degrees of freedom: charge, superconducting phase, or flux. Here, we demonstrate the coherent manipulation of a quantum system based on Andreev bound states, which are microscopic quasiparticle states inherent to superconducting weak links. Using a circuit quantum electrodynamics setup we perform single-shot readout of this "Andreev qubit". We determine its excited state lifetime and coherence time to be in the…
We study the energy spectrum and the electromagnetic response of Andreev bound states in short Josephson junctions made of semiconducting nanowires. We focus on the joint effect of Zeeman and spin-orbit coupling on the Andreev level spectra. Our model incorporates the penetration of the magnetic field in the proximitized wires, which substantially modifies the spectra. We pay special attention to the occurrence of fermion parity switches at increasing values of the field and to the magnetic field dependence of the absorption strength of microwave-induced transitions. Our calculations can be us…
We discuss inherent thermometry in a Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor tunnel junction. In this configuration, the energy selectivity of single-particle tunneling can provide a significant electron cooling, depending on the bias voltage. The usual approach for measuring the electron temperature consists in using an additional pair of superconducting tunnel junctions as probes. In this paper, we discuss our experiment performed on a different design with no such thermometer. The quasi-equilibrium in the central metallic island is discussed in terms of a kinetic equation including i…

Andreev-reflection dominated transport is demonstrated in Al/n-In0.38Ga0.62As superconductor-semiconductor junctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001). High junction transparency was achieved in low-doped devices by exploiting Si interface bilayers to suppress the native Schottky barrier. It is argued that this technique is ideally suited for the fabrication of ballistic transport hybrid microstructures.
We have measured the temperature dependence of gap features revealed by Andreev reflection Delta_s and by tunneling Delta in the ab-plane of optimal and slightly overdoped microcrystals of (BiPb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) with critical temperature Tc=110-115 K, and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) with Tc=80-84 K. The tunneling conductance of Bi2223-Insulator-Bi2223 junction shows peaks at the 2Delta gap voltage, as well as dips and broad humps at other voltages. In Bi2223, similarly to the well known Bi2212 spectra, the energies corresponding to 2Delta, to the dip, and to the hump structure are in the rati…
Within the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) formalism an exact quantization condition for Andreev bound states of the ferromagnetic-superconducting hybrid systems of box geometry is derived and a semi-classical formula for the density of states is obtained. The semi-classical formula is shown to agree with the exact result, even when the exchange field $h$, is much larger than the superconductor order parameter, provided $h$ is small compared with the Fermi energy.
Andreev reflection at the interface between a half-metallic ferromagnet and a spin-singlet superconductor is possible only if it is accompanied by a spin flip. Here we calculate the Andreev reflection amplitudes for the case that the spin flip originates from a spatially non-uniform magnetization direction in the half metal. We calculate both the microscopic Andreev reflection amplitude for a single reflection event and an effective Andreev reflection amplitude describing the effect of multiple Andreev reflections in a ballistic thin film geometry. It is shown that the angle and energy depende…
We investigate quasi-particle excitation modes and the topological number of a fractional-flux quantum vortex in a layered (multi-component) superconductor. The Bogoliubov equation for a half-flux quantum vortex is solved to show that there is no low-lying Andreev bound state near zero energy in the core of a quantum vortex, which is surprisingly in contrast to the result for an inter-flux vortex. Related to this result, there are singular excitation modes that have opposite angular momenta, moving in the opposite direction around the core of the vortex. The topological index (skyrmion number)…
Tunneling across superconducting junctions proceeds by a rich variety of processes, which transfer single electrons, Cooper pairs, or even larger numbers of electrons by multiple Andreev reflections. Photon-assisted tunneling combined with the venerable Tien-Gordon model has long been a powerful tool to identify tunneling processes between superconductors. Here, we probe superconducting tunnel junctions including an impurity-induced Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) state by exposing a scanning tunneling microscope with a superconducting tip to microwave radiation. We find that a simple Tien-Gordon descr…
The dynamics of a superconducting quantum point contact biased at subgap voltages is shown to be strongly affected by a microwave electromagnetic field. Interference among a sequence of temporally localized, microwave-induced Landau-Zener transitions between current carrying Andreev levels results in energy absorption and in an increase of the subgap current by several orders of magnitude. The contact is an interferometer in the sense that the current is an oscillatory function of the inverse bias voltage. Possible applications to Andreev-level spectroscopy and microwave detection are discusse…
We performed microwave spectroscopy of an InAs nanowire between superconducting contacts implementing a finite-length, multi-channel Josephson weak link. Certain features in the spectra, such as the splitting by spin-orbit interactions of the transition lines among Andreev states, have been already understood in terms of non-interacting models. However, we identify here additional transitions, which evidence the presence of Coulomb interactions. By combining experimental measurements and model calculations, we reach a qualitative understanding of these very rich Andreev spectra.
Semiconductor/superconductor hybrids exhibit a range of phenomena that can be exploited for the study of novel physics and the development of new technologies. Understanding the origin the energy spectrum of such hybrids is therefore a crucial goal. Here, we study Josephson junctions defined by shadow epitaxy on InAsSb/Al nanowires. The devices exhibit gate-tunable supercurrents at low temperatures and multiple Andreev reflections (MARs) at finite voltage bias. Under microwave irradiation, photon assisted tunneling (PAT) of MARs produces characteristic oscillating sidebands at quantized energi…
We investigate electron cooling based on a clean normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junction. Due to the suppression of the Andreev reflection by the spin-filter effect, the cooling power of the system is found to be extremely higher than that for conventional normal-metal/nonmagnetic-insulator/superconductor coolers. Therefore we can extract large amount of heat from normal metals. Our results strongly indicate the practical usefulness of the spin-filter effect for cooling detectors, sensors, and quantum bits.
We discuss basics of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) of the superconducting state with normal and superconducting tips. We present a new method to measure the local variations in the Andreev reflection amplitude between a superconducting tip and the sample. This method is termed Scanning Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy (SAS). We also briefly discuss vortex imaging with STM/S under an applied current through the sample, and show the vortex lattice as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and sample's surface.
Predictions are established for linear differential current-current cross-correlations dSab/dV in a symmetrically biased three-terminal normal metal-superconductor-normal metal (NSN) device. Highly transparent contacts turn out to be especially interesting because they feature positive dSab/dV. At high transparency, processes based on Crossed Andreev Reflection (CAR) contribute only negligibly to the current and to dSab/dV. Under these circumstances, current-current cross-correlations can be plausibly interpreted as a coherent coupling between the two NS interfaces in the form of synchronized …
We numerically study crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) in a topological insulator nanowire T-junction where one lead is proximitized by a superconductor. We perform realistic simulations based on the 3D BHZ model and compare the results with those from an effective 2D surface model, whose computational cost is much lower. Both approaches show that CAR should be clearly observable in a wide parameter range, including perfect CAR in a somewhat more restricted range. Furthermore, it can be controlled by a magnetic field and is robust to disorder. Our effective 2D implementation allows to model sys…
Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on single magnetic impurities on superconducting surfaces, we present here a comprehensive theoretical study of the interplay between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states and (multiple) Andreev reflections. Our theory is based on a combination of an Anderson model with broken spin degeneracy and nonequilibrium Green's function techniques that allows us to describe the electronic transport through a magnetic impurity coupled to superconducting leads for arbitrary junction transparency. Using this combination we are able to elucidate the dif…
A normal conductor placed in good contact with a superconductor can inherit its remarkable electronic properties. This proximity effect microscopically originates from the formation in the conductor of entangled electron-hole states, called Andreev states. Spectroscopic studies of Andreev states have been performed in just a handful of systems. The unique geometry, electronic structure and high mobility of graphene make it a novel platform for studying Andreev physics in two dimensions. Here we use a full van der Waals heterostructure to perform tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of the prox…
We describe and characterize a microwave setup to probe the Andreev levels of a superconducting atomic contact. The contact is part of a superconducting loop inductively coupled to a superconducting coplanar resonator. By monitoring the resonator reflection coefficient close to its resonance frequency as a function of both flux through the loop and frequency of a second tone we perform spectroscopy of the transition between two Andreev levels of highly transmitting channels of the contact. The results indicate how to perform coherent manipulation of these states.
We have measured the effect of microwave irradiation on the dc current-voltage characteristics of superconducting atomic contacts. The interaction of the external field with the ac supercurrents leads to replicas of the supercurrent peak, the well known Shapiro resonances. The observation of supplementary fractional resonances for contacts containing highly transmitting conduction channels reveals their non-sinusoidal current-phase relation. The resonances sit on a background current which is itself deeply modified, as a result of photon assisted multiple Andreev reflections. The results provi…
The Josephson effect describes the flow of supercurrent in a weak link, such as a tunnel junction, nanowire, or molecule, between two superconductors. It is the basis for a variety of circuits and devices, with applications ranging from medicine to quantum information. Currently, experiments using Josephson circuits that behave like artificial atoms are revolutionizing the way we probe and exploit the laws of quantum physics. Microscopically, the supercurrent is carried by Andreev pair states, which are localized at the weak link. These states come in doublets and have energies inside the supe…
