We discuss inherent thermometry in a Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor tunnel junction. In this configuration, the energy selectivity of single-particle tunneling can provide a significant electron cooling, depending on the bias voltage. The usual approach for measuring the electron temperature consists in using an additional pair of superconducting tunnel junctions as probes. In this paper, we discuss our experiment performed on a different design with no such thermometer. The quasi-equilibrium in the central metallic island is discussed in terms of a kinetic equation including injection and relaxation terms. We determine the electron temperature by comparing the micro-cooler experimental current-voltage characteristic with isothermal theoretical predictions. The limits of validity of this approach, due to the junctions asymmetry, the Andreev reflection or the presence of sub-gap states are discussed.
We demonstrate a novel approach to thermometry at the nanoscale exploiting a superconducting weak link. Such a weak link probed with nanosecond current pulses serves as a temperature sensing element and, due to the fast inherent dynamics, is capable of delivering unprecedented temporal resolution. We employ the thermometer to measure dynamic temperature of electrons in a long superconducting wire relaxing to the bath temperature after application of the heating pulse. Our measurement delivers nanosecond resolution thus providing the proof-of-concept of the fastest-todate all-solid-state thermo…
We have studied thermal gradients in thin Cu and AlMn wires, both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the wires were Joule heated non-uniformly at sub-Kelvin temperatures, and the resulting temperature gradients were measured using normal metal-insulator-superconducting tunnel junctions. The data clearly shows that even in reasonably well conducting thin wires with a short ($\sim 10 μ$m) non-heated portion, significant temperature differences can form. In most cases, the measurements agree well with a model which includes electron-phonon interaction and electronic thermal con…
We demonstrate an original method -- based on controlled oxidation -- to create high-quality tunnel junctions between superconducting Al reservoirs and InAs semiconductor nanowires. We show clean tunnel characteristics with a current suppression by over $4$ orders of magnitude for a junction bias well below the Al gap $Δ_0 \approx 200\,μ{\rm eV}$. The experimental data are in close agreement with the BCS theoretical expectations of a superconducting tunnel junction. The studied devices combine small-scale tunnel contacts working as thermometers as well as larger electrodes that provide a proof…
We have developed a scheme for a high resolution measurement of the switching current distribution of a current biased Josephson tunnel junction using a timing technique. The measurement setup is implemented such that the digital control and read-out electronics are optically decoupled from the analog bias electronics attached to the sample. We have successfully used this technique to measure the thermal activation and the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase in a small Josephson tunnel junction with a high experimental resolution. This technique may be employed to characterize current-b…
We present a consistent theory of superconductive tunneling in single-mode junctions within a scattering formulation of Bogoliubov-de Gennes quantum mechanics. Both dc Josephson effect and dc quasiparticle transport in voltage biased junctions are considered. Elastic quasiparticle scattering by the junction determines equilibrium Josephson current. We discuss the origin of Andreev bound states in tunnel junctions and their role in equilibrium Josephson transport. In contrast, quasiparticle tunneling in voltage biased junctions is determined by inelastic scattering. We derive a general expressi…
MgB2 tunnel junctions (MgB2/barrier/MgB2) were fabricated using a native oxide grown on the bottom MgB2 film as the tunnel barrier. Such barriers therefore survive the deposition of the second electrode at 300oC, even over junction areas of ~1 mm2. Studies of such junctions, and those of the type MgB2/native or thermal oxide/metal (Pb, Au, or Ag) show that tunnel barriers grown on MgB2 exhibit a wide range of barrier heights and widths.
Understanding the subgap behavior of Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions is important in order to be able to accurately model the thermal properties of the junctions. Hekking and Nazarov developed a theory in which NIS subgap current in thin-film structures can be modeled by multiple Andreev reflections. In their theory, the current due to Andreev reflections depends on the junction area and the junction resistance area product. We have measured the current due to Andreev reflections in NIS tunnel junctions for various junction sizes and junction resistance area products and…
A method to identify the parity of unconventional superconductors is proposed based on tunneling spectroscopy. For a model of calculation, we adopt a ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) junction of which tunneling current is spin polarized. The tunneling conductance spectra are shown to be quite sensitive to the direction of the magnetization axis in the ferromagnet only when the superconductor has odd parity. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish the parity of the superconductor by measuring the tunneling spectroscopy in F/S junctions.
We describe a new biasing scheme for single photon detectors based on superconducting tunnel junctions. It replaces a single detector junction with a circuit of three junctions and achieves biasing of a detector junction at subgap currents without the use of an external magnetic field. The biasing occurs through the nonlinear interaction of the three junctions, which we demonstrate through numerical simulation. This nonlinear state is numerically stable against external fluctuations and is compatible with high fidelity electrical readout of the photon-induced current. The elimination of the ex…
In highly resistive superconducting tunnel junctions, excess subgap current is usually observed and is often attributed to microscopic "pinholes" in the tunnel barrier. We have studied the subgap current in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) and superconductor-insulator-normal-metal (SIN) junctions. In Al/AlOx/Al junctions, we observed a decrease of 2 orders of magnitude in the current upon the transition from the SIS to the SIN regime, where it then matched theory. In Al/AlOx/Cu junctions, we also observed generic features of coherent diffusive Andreev transport in a junction with …
The physics of Josephson tunnel junctions drastically depends on their geometrical configurations. The shape of the junction determines the specific form of the magnetic-field dependence of the its Josephson current. Here we address the magnetic diffraction patterns of specially shaped planar Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field of arbitrary orientations. We focus on a wide ensemble of junctions whose shape is invariant under point reflection. We analyze the implications of this type of isometry and derive the threshold curves of junctions whose shape is the…
We calculate the subgap current in planar superconducting tunnel junctions with thin-film diffusive leads. It is found that the subharmonic gap structure of the tunnel current scales with an effective tunneling transparency which may exceed the junction transparency by up to two orders of magnitude depending on the junction geometry and the ratio between the coherence length and the elastic scattering length. These results provide an alternative explanation of anomalously high values of the subgap current in tunnelling experiments often ascribed to imperfection of the insulating layer. We also…
The escape of a small current-biased Josephson tunnel junction from the zero voltage state in the presence of weak microwave radiation is investigated experimentally at low temperatures. The measurements of the junction switching current distribution indicate the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase below a cross-over temperature of $T^{\star} \approx 280 \rm{mK}$. At temperatures below $T^{\star}$ we observe both single-photon and \emph{multi-photon} transitions between the junction energy levels by applying microwave radiation in the frequency range between $10 \rm{GHz}$ and $38 \rm{GH…
The specific property of a planar tunnel junction with thin-film diffusive plates and long enough leads is an essential enhancement of its transmission coefficient compared to the bare transparency of the tunnel barrier [1,2]. In voltage-biased junctions, this creates favourable conditions for strong nonequilibrium of quasiparticles in the junction plates and leads, produced by multiparticle tunneling. We study theoretically the interplay between the nonequilibrium and relaxation processes in such junctions and found that nonequilibrium in the leads noticeably modifies the current-voltage char…
We formulate a theoretical framework to describe multiparticle current transport in planar superconducting tunnel junctions with diffusive electrodes. The approach is based on direct solving of quasiclassical Keldysh-Green function equations for nonequilibrium superconductors, and consists of a combination of a circuit theory analysis and improved perturbation expansion. The theory predicts much greater scaling parameter for the subharmonic gap structure of the tunnel current in diffusive junctions compared to the one in ballistic junctions and mesoscopic constrictions with the same barrier tr…
Traditionally, since the discovery of the Josephson effect in 1962, the magnetic diffraction pattern of planar Josephson tunnel junctions has been recorded with the field applied in the plane of the junction. Here we discuss the static junction properties in a transverse magnetic field where demagnetization effects imposed by the junction geometry and configuration of the electrodes are important. Measurements of the critical current versus magnetic field in planar Nb-based high-quality junctions with different geometry, size and critical current density show that it is advantageous to use a t…
We demonstrate that good superconductor/insulator/normal-metal tunnel junctions can be fabricated on as-grown superconducting MgB2 thin films. The as-grown films were prepared by coevaporation at low growth temperatures of around 280deg. The insulating barrier was formed by an Mg overlayer, which is subsequently oxidized in air. The tunneling spectra for Au/MgOx/MgB2 junctions showed a reproducible and well-defined superconducting gap (delta= ~ 2.5 meV). The resultant 2delta/ kBTc was significantly smaller than the predicted BCS value of 3.52.
We have developed a method for the reproducible fabrication of superconducting scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips. We use these tips to form superconductor/insulator/superconductor tunnel junctions with the STM tip as one of the electrodes. We show that such junctions exhibit fluctuation dominated Josephson effects, and describe how the Josephson product IcRn can be inferred from the junctions' tunneling characteristics in this regime. This is first demonstrated for tunneling into Pb films, and then applied in studies of single crystals of NbSe2. We find that in NbSe2, IcRn is lower than…
Thin film devices have the advantage of being extremely compact, operate in a continuous mode, dissipate little power, and can easily be integrated in cryogenic detectors. Motivated by such possibilities, we investigate the phonon deficit effect in thin film $SIS$ (superconductor--insulator--superconductor) and $SIN$ tunnel junctions. Under certain circumstances, the phonon absorption spectra of such tunnel junctions have spectral windows of phonon absorption/emission. We propose to use phonon filters to select the phonon absorbtion windows and thus to enhance the cooling effect. Membranes att…
We study tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor (F/S) junctions. We include the effects of spin polarization, interfacial resistance, and Fermi wavevector mismatch (FWM) between the F and S regions. Andreev reflection (AR) at the F/S interface, governing tunneling at low bias voltage, is strongly modified by these parameters. The conductance exhibits a very wide variety of features as a function of applied voltage.
We have successfully fabricated micron-scale Cu-AlO$_{x} $-Al-NbN normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction devices, using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) for NbN film growth, and electron-beam lithography and shadow evaporation for the final device fabrication. The subgap conductance of these devices exhibit a strong temperature dependence, rendering them suitable for thermometry from $\sim$ 0.1 K all the way up to the superconducting transition temperature of the NbN layer, which was here $\sim 11$ K, but could be extended up to $\sim 16$ K in our PLD chamber. Our data fits w…
We report on large thermoelectric effects in superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junctions in proximity contact with the ferromagnetic insulator europium sulfide. The combination of a spin-splitting field and spin-polarized tunnel conductance in these systems breaks the electron-hole symmetry and leads to spin-dependent thermoelectric currents. We show that the exchange splitting induced by the europium sulfide boosts the thermoelectric effect in small applied fields and can therefore eliminate the need to apply large magnetic fields, which might otherwise impede applications in thermometry or c…
We theoretically study the spin-dependent transport in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferro-magnet double barrier tunnel junction. The spin-polarized tunneling currents give rise to spin imbalance in the superconductor. The resulting nonequilibrium spin density suppresses the superconductivity with increase of the tunneling currents. We focus on the effect of asymmetry in the double tunnel junction, where the barrier height of the tunnel junction and the spin-polarization of the ferromagnets are different, on spin injection, and discuss how the superconductivity is suppressed in the asymmetric j…
The tunnel junction between tip and sample in a scanning tunneling microscope is an ideal platform to access the local density of states in the sample through the differential conductance. We show that the energy resolution that can be obtained is principally limited by the electromagnetic interaction of the tunneling electrons with the surrounding environmental impedance as well as the capacitative noise of the junction. The parameter tuning the sensitivity to the environmental impedance is the capacitance of the tunnel junction. The higher the junction capacitance, the less sensitive the tun…
We have investigated theoretically the influence of an AC drive on heat transport in a hybrid normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction in the photon-assisted tunneling regime. We find that the useful heat flux out from the normal metal is always reduced as compared to its magnitude under the static and quasi-static drive conditions. Our results are useful to predict the operative conditions of AC driven superconducting electron refrigerators.
A Josephson tunnel junction transistor based on quasiparticle injection is proposed. Its operation relies on the manipulation of the electron distribution in one of the junction electrodes. This is accomplished by injecting quasiparticle current through the junction electrode by two additional tunnel coupled superconductors. Both large supercurrent enhancement and fast quenching can be achieved with respect to equilibrium by varying quasiparticle injection for proper temperature regimes and suitable superconductor combinations. Joined with large power gain this makes the device attractive for …
We have performed a detailed study of the time stability and reproducibility of sub-micron $Al/AlO_{x}/Al$ tunnel junctions, fabricated using standard double angle shadow evaporations. We have found that by aggressively cleaning the substrate before the evaporations, thus preventing any contamination of the junction, we obtained perfectly stable oxide barriers. We also present measurements on large ensembles of junctions which prove the reproducibility of the fabrication process. The measured tunnel resistance variance in large ensembles of identically fabricated junctions is in the range of o…
We demonstrate a technique for creating high quality, large area tunnel junction barriers for normal-insulating- superconducting or superconducting-insulating-superconducting tunnel junctions. We use atomic layer depo- sition and an aluminum wetting layer to form a nanometer scale insulating barrier on gold films. Electronic transport measurements confirm that single-particle electron tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism, and the measured current-voltage curves demonstrate the viability of using these devices as self-calibrated, low temperature thermometers with a wide range of tunabl…
The effect of the barrier on the proximity effect in normal-superconductor junction is analyzed. A general criterion for the barrier, though large, to be effectively transparent, is given. This criterion is applied to both the conductance of a disordered NS junction (reflectionless tunneling) and the density of states across it, showing that both phenomena stem from the same physical effect.
The tunneling spectrum of an electron and a hole in metal-superconductor-metal junctions is computed using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory. The incident and the outgoing currents finally balance each other by an interface charge inside the superconductor and metal junction. The present computation shows a more abundant structure compared to that on a metal-superconductor junction, such as the resonance at bias voltages above the energy gap of the superconductor. The density of the interface charge shows a quantum-like oscillation.
We have theoretically investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and the influence of nodal quasiparticles and zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT in s-wave/ d-wave hybrid Josephson junctions. In contrast to d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor. Therefore, the inherent dissipation in these junctions is found to be very weak. We have also investigated MQT in a realistic s-wave/d-wave (Nb/Au/YBCO) junction in which O…
