We prove a formula relating the Hausdorff dimension of a subset of the unit interval and the Hausdorff dimension of the same set with respect to a random path matric on the interval, which is generated using a multiplicative cascade. When the random variables generating the cascade are exponentials of Gaussians, the well known KPZ formula of Knizhnik, Polyakov and Zamolodchikov from quantum gravity appears. This note was inspired by the recent work of Duplantier and Sheffield proving a somewhat different version of the KPZ formula for Liouville gravity. In contrast with the Liouville gravity setting, the one dimensional multiplicative cascade framework facilitates the determination of the Hausdorff dimension, rather than some expected box count dimension.
This paper is concerned with the construction of atomic Gaussian multiplicative chaos and the KPZ formula in Liouville quantum gravity. On the first hand, we construct purely atomic random measures corresponding to values of the parameter $γ^2$ beyond the transition phase (i.e. $γ^2>2d$) and check the duality relation with sub-critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos. On the other hand, we give a simplified proof of the classical KPZ formula as well as the dual KPZ formula for atomic Gaussian multiplicative chaos. In particular, this framework allows to construct singular Liouville measures and …
We prove a Hausdorff dimension result for the image of two-dimensional multiplicative cascade processes, and we obtain from this result a KPZ-type formula which normally has one point of phase transition.
Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos is a way to produce a measure on $\R^d$ (or subdomain of $\R^d$) of the form $e^{γX(x)} dx$, where $X$ is a log-correlated Gaussian field and $γ\in [0,\sqrt{2d})$ is a fixed constant. A renormalization procedure is needed to make this precise, since $X$ oscillates between $-\infty$ and $\infty$ and is not a function in the usual sense. This procedure yields the zero measure when $γ=\sqrt{2d}$. Two methods have been proposed to produce a non-trivial measure when $γ=\sqrt{2d}$. The first involves taking a derivative at $γ=\sqrt{2d}$ (and was studied in an earlier pa…
We provide new constructions of the subcritical and critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) measures corresponding to the 2D Gaussian free field (GFF). As a special case we recover E. Aidekon's construction of random measures using nested conformally invariant loop ensembles, and thereby prove his conjecture that certain CLE$_4$ based limiting measures are equal in law to the GMC measures for the GFF. The constructions are based on the theory of local sets of the GFF and build a strong link between multiplicative cascades and GMC measures. This link allows us to directly adapt techniques …
We study Mandelbrot's multiplicative cascade measures at the critical temperature. As has been recently shown by Barral, Rhodes and Vargas (arXiv:1203.5445), an appropriately normalized sequence of cascade measures converges weakly in probability to a nontrivial limit measure. We prove that these limit measures have no atoms and give bounds for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution of the measure. Using the earlier work of Barral and Seuret (2007), we compute the multifractal spectrum of the measures. We also extend the result of Benjamini and Schramm (2009), in which the KP…
We study multiplicative statistics for the eigenvalues of unitarily-invariant Hermitian random matrix models. We consider one-cut regular polynomial potentials and a large class of multiplicative statistics. We show that in the large matrix limit several associated quantities converge to limits which are universal in both the potential and the family of multiplicative statistics considered. In turn, such universal limits are described by the integro-differential Painlevé II equation, and in particular they connect the random matrix models considered with the narrow wedge solution to the KPZ eq…
Motivated by the recent exact solution of the {\it stationary-state} Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) statistics by Imamura & Sasamoto (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 190603 (2012)), as well as a precursor experimental signature unearthed by Takeuchi (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 210604 (2013)), we establish here the universality of these phenomena, examining scaling behaviors of directed polymers in a random medium, the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noise, and kinetically roughened KPZ growth models. We emphasize the value of cross KPZ-Class universalities, revealing crossover effects of …
In this article, we study complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos. More precisely, we study the renormalization theory and the limit of the exponential of a complex log-correlated Gaussian field in all dimensions (including Gaussian Free Fields in dimension 2). Our main working assumption is that the real part and the imaginary part are independent. We also discuss applications in 2D string theory; in particular we give a rigorous mathematical definition of the so-called Tachyon fields, the conformally invariant operators in critical Liouville Quantum Gravity with a c=1 central charge, and deriv…
The $(d+1)$-dimensional KPZ equation is the canonical model for the growth of rough $d$-dimensional random surfaces. A deep mathematical understanding of the KPZ equation for $d=1$ has been achieved in recent years, and the case $d\ge 3$ has also seen some progress. The most physically relevant case of $d=2$, however, is not very well-understood mathematically, largely due to the renormalization that is required: in the language of renormalization group analysis, the $d=2$ case is neither ultraviolet superrenormalizable like the $d=1$ case nor infrared superrenormalizable like the $d\ge 3$ cas…
In this note we give upper bounds for the free energy of discrete polymers in random media. The bounds are given by the so-called generalized multiplicative cascades from the statistical theory of turbulence. For the polymer model, we derive that the quenched free energy is different from the annealed one in dimension 1, for any finite temperature and general environment. This implies localization of the polymer.
We establish the Freidlin--Wentzell Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the Stochastic Heat Equation with multiplicative noise in one spatial dimension. That is, we introduce a small parameter $ \sqrt{\varepsilon} $ to the noise, and establish an LDP for the trajectory of the solution. Such a Freidlin--Wentzell LDP gives the short-time, one-point LDP for the KPZ equation in terms of a variational problem. Analyzing this variational problem under the narrow wedge initial data, we prove a quadratic law for the near-center tail and a $ \frac52 $ law for the deep lower tail. These power laws confi…
In the classical occupancy scheme, one considers a fixed discrete probability measure ${\bf p}=(p_i: {i\in{\cal I}})$ and throws balls independently at random in boxes labeled by ${\cal I}$, such that $p_i$ is the probability that a given ball falls into the box $i$. In this work, we are interested in asymptotic regimes of this scheme in the situation induced by a refining sequence $({\bf p}(k) : k\in\N)$ of random probability measures which arise from some multiplicative cascade. Our motivation comes from the study of the asymptotic behavior of certain fragmentation chains
A multiplicative cascade can be thought of as a randomization of a measure on the boundary of a tree, constructed from an iid collection of random variables attached to the tree vertices. Given an initial measure with certain regularity properties, we construct a continuous time, measure-valued process whose value at each time is a cascade of the initial one. We do this by replacing the random variables on the vertices with independent increment processes satisfying certain moment assumptions. Our process has a Markov property: at any given time it is a cascade of the process at any earlier ti…
We obtain a condition for the $L^q$-convergence of martingales generated by random multiplicative cascade measures for $q>1$ without any self-similarity requirements on the cascades.
We consider the action of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades on probability measures supported on a symbolic space. For general probability measures, we obtain almost a sharp criterion of non-degeneracy of the limiting measure; it relies on the lower and upper Hausdorff dimensions of the measure and the entropy of the random weights. We also obtain sharp bounds for the lower Hausdorff and upper packing dimensions of the limiting measure. When the original measure is a Gibbs measure associated with a potential of certain modulus of continuity (weaker than Hölder), all our results are sharp. Thi…
We carry out the construction of some ill-posed multiplicative stochastic heat equations on unbounded domains. The two main equations our result covers are, on the one hand the parabolic Anderson model on $\mathbf{R}^3$, and on the other hand the KPZ equation on $\mathbf{R}$ via the Cole-Hopf transform. To perform these constructions, we adapt the theory of regularity structures to the setting of weighted Besov spaces. One particular feature of our construction is that it allows one to start both equations from a Dirac mass at the initial time.
We investigate the box-counting dimension of the image of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}$ under a random multiplicative cascade function $f$. The corresponding result for Hausdorff dimension was established by Benjamini and Schramm in the context of random geometry, and for sufficiently regular sets, the same formula holds for the box-counting dimension. However, we show that this is far from true in general, and we compute explicitly a formula of a very different nature that gives the almost sure box-counting dimension of the random image $f(E)$ when the set $E$ comprises a convergent sequence. …
Multiplicative cascades, under weak or strong disorder, refer to sequences of positive random measures $μ_{n,β}, n = 1,2,\dots$, parameterized by a positive disorder parameter $β$, and defined on the Borel $σ$-field ${\mathcal B}$ of $\partial T = \{0,1,\dots b-1\}^\infty$ for the product topology. The normalized cascade is defined by the corresponding sequence of random probability measures $prob_{n,β}:= Z_{n,β}^{-1}μ_{n,β}, n = 1,2\dots,$ normalized to a probability by the partition function $Z_{n,β}$. In this note, a recent result of Madaule (2011) is used to explicitly construct a family o…
The familiar cascade measures are sequences of random positive measures obtained on $[0,1]$ via $b$-adic independent cascades. To generalize them, this paper allows the random weights invoked in the cascades to take real or complex values. This yields sequences of random functions whose possible strong or weak limits are natural candidates for modeling multifractal phenomena. Their asymptotic behavior is investigated, yielding a sufficient condition for almost sure uniform convergence to nontrivial statistically self-similar limits. Is the limit function a monofractal function in multifractal …
We study the branching tree of the perimeters of the nested loops in critical $O(n)$ model for $n \in (0,2)$ on random quadrangulations. We prove that after renormalization it converges towards an explicit continuous multiplicative cascade whose offspring distribution $(x_i)_{i \ge 1}$ is related to the jumps of a spectrally positive $α$-stable Lévy process with $α= \frac{3}{2} \pm \frac{1}π \arccos(n/2)$ and for which we have the surprisingly simple and explicit transform $$ \mathbb E\left[\sum_{i \ge 1} (x_i)^θ\right] = \frac{\sin(π(2-α))}{\sin (π(θ- α))} \quad \mbox{for }θ\in (α, α+1).$$ An…
The solution of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation (KPZ equation) is solved formally via Cole-Hopf transformation $h=\log u$, where $u$ is the solution of multiplicative stochastic heat equation(SHE). In earlier works by Chatterjee and Dunlap, Caravenna, Sun, and Zygouras, and Gu, they consider the solution of two dimensional KPZ equation via the solution $u_\varepsilon$ of SHE with flat initial condition and with noise which is mollified in space on scale in $\varepsilon$ and its strength is weakened as $β_\varepsilon=\hatβ \sqrt{\frac{2π\varepsilon}{-\log \varepsilon}}$, and they prove that when $…
The original density is 1 for $t\in (0,1)$, $b$ is an integer base ($b\geq 2$%), and $p\in (0,1)$ is a parameter. The first construction stage divides the unit interval into $b$ subintervals and multiplies the density in each subinterval by either 1 or -1 with the respective frequencies of $\frac{1% }{2}+\frac{p}{2}$ and ${1/2}-\frac{p}{2}$. It is shown that the resulting density can be renormalized so that, as $n\to \infty $ ($n$ being the number of iterations) the signed measure converges in some sense to a non-degenerate limit. If $H=1+\log_{b}$ $p>{1}/{2}$, hence $p>b^{{-1}/{% 2}}$, renorm…
The purpose of this article is threefold. First, we introduce a new type of boundary condition for the multiplicative-noise stochastic heat equation on the half space. This is essentially a Dirichlet boundary condition but with a nontrivial normalization near the boundary which leads to inhomogeneous transition densities (roughly, those of a Brownian \textit{meander}) within the associated chaos series. Secondly, we prove a new convergence result of the directed-polymer partition function in an octant to the multiplicative stochastic heat equation with this type of boundary condition, which in…
We study in the present article the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation $$ \partial_t h(t,x)=νΔh(t,x)+λ|\nabla h(t,x)|^2 +\sqrt{D}\, η(t,x), \qquad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}^d $$ in $d\ge 3$ dimensions in the perturbative regime, i.e. for $λ>0$ small enough and a smooth, bounded, integrable initial condition $h_0=h(t=0,\cdot)$. The forcing term $η$ in the right-hand side is a regularized space-time white noise. The exponential of $h$ -- its so-called Cole-Hopf transform -- is known to satisfy a linear PDE with multiplicative noise. We prove a large-scale diffusive limit for the solut…
Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades provide a construction of a dynamical system on a set of probability measures defined by inequalities on moments. To be more specific, beyond the first iteration, the trajectories take values in the set of fixed points of smoothing transformations (i.e., some generalized stable laws). Studying this system leads to a central limit theorem and to its functional version. The limit Gaussian process can also be obtained as limit of an `additive cascade' of independent normal variables.
In this article, we consider the continuous analog of the celebrated Mandelbrot star equation with infinitely divisible weights. Mandelbrot introduced this equation to characterize the law of multiplicative cascades. We show existence and uniqueness of measures satisfying the aforementioned continuous equation. We obtain an explicit characterization of the structure of these measures, which reflects the constraints imposed by the continuous setting. In particular, we show that the continuous equation enjoys some specific properties that do not appear in the discrete star equation. To that purp…
Statistically self-similar measures on $[0,1]$ are limit of multiplicative cascades of random weights distributed on the $b$-adic subintervals of $[0,1]$. These weights are i.i.d, positive, and of expectation $1/b$. We extend these cascades naturally by allowing the random weights to take negative values. This yields martingales taking values in the space of continuous functions on $[0,1]$. Specifically, we consider for each $H\in (0,1)$ the martingale $(B_{n})_{n\geq1}$ obtained when the weights take the values $-b^{-H}$ and $b^{-H}$, in order to get $B_n$ converging almost surely uniformly t…
We consider complex Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades on a random weigh\-ted tree. Under suitable assumptions, this yields a dynamics $\T$ on laws invariant by random weighted means (the so called fixed points of smoothing transformations) and which have a finite moment of order 2. Moreover, we can exhibit two main behaviors: If the weights are conservative, i.e., sum up to~1 almost surely, we find a domain for the initial law $μ$ such that a non-standard (functional) central limit theorem is valid for the orbit $(\T^nμ)_{n\ge 0}$ (this completes in a non trivial way our previous result in th…
In this article, we consider the continuous analog of the celebrated Mandelbrot star equation with lognormal weights. Mandelbrot introduced this equation to characterize the law of multiplicative cascades. We show existence and uniqueness of measures satisfying the aforementioned continuous equation; these measures fall under the scope of the Gaussian multiplicative chaos theory developed by J.P. Kahane in 1985 (or possibly extensions of this theory). As a by product, we also obtain an explicit characterization of the covariance structure of these measures. We also prove that qualitative prope…
In this article a collection of random self-similar fractal dendrites is constructed, and their Hausdorff dimension is calculated. Previous results determining this quantity for random self-similar structures have relied on geometrical properties of an underlying metric space or the scaling factors being bounded uniformly away from 0. However, using a percolative argument, and taking advantage of the tree-like structure of the sets considered here, it is shown that conditions such as these are not necessary. The scaling factors of the recursively defined structures in consideration form what i…
