We consider realizations of GUT models in F-theory. Adopting a bottom up approach, the assumption that the dynamics of the GUT model can in principle decouple from Planck scale physics leads to a surprisingly predictive framework. An internal U(1) hypercharge flux Higgses the GUT group directly to the MSSM or to a flipped GUT model, a mechanism unavailable in heterotic models. This new ingredient automatically addresses a number of puzzles present in traditional GUT models. The internal U(1) hyperflux allows us to solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem, and explains the qualitative features of the distorted GUT mass relations for lighter generations due to the Aharanov-Bohm effect. These models typically come with nearly exact global symmetries which prevent bare mu terms and also forbid dangerous baryon number violating operators. Strong curvature around our brane leads to a repulsion mechanism for Landau wave functions for neutral fields. This leads to large hierarchies of the form exp(-c/B^(2*g)) where c and g are order one parameters and B ~ M_(GUT)/(M_(pl)*alpha_(GUT)). This effect can simultaneously generate a viably small mu term as well as an acceptable Dirac neutrino mass on the order of 0.5 * 10^(-2 +/- 0.5) eV. In another scenario, we find a modified seesaw mechanism which predicts that the light neutrinos have masses in the expected range while the Majorana mass term for the heavy neutrinos is ~ 3 * 10^(12 +/- 1.5) GeV. Communicating supersymmetry breaking to the MSSM can be elegantly realized through gauge mediation. In one scenario, the same repulsion mechanism also leads to messenger masses which are naturally much lighter than the GUT scale.
A manifestly gauge invariant formulation of 5-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in terms of 4d superfields is derived. It relies on a supersymmetry and gauge-covariant derivative operator in the $x^5$ direction. This formulation allows for a systematic study of higher-derivative operators by combining invariant 4d superfield expressions under the additional restriction of 5d Lorentz symmetry. In cases where the 5d theory is compactified on a gauge-symmetry-breaking orbifold, the formalism can be used for a simple discussion of possible brane operators invariant under the restricte…
We analyze the construction of non-supersymmetric three generation six-stack Pati-Salam (PS) $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ GUT classes of models, by localizing D6-branes intersecting at angles in four dimensional orientifolded toroidal compactifications of type IIA. Special role in the models is played by the presence of extra branes needed to satisfy the RR tadpole cancellation conditions. The models contain at low energy {\em exactly the Standard model} with no extra matter and/or extra gauge group factors. They are build such that they represent deformations around the quark and l…
We study Type I string theory compactified on a T^6/Z_3 orientifold. The low-energy dynamics is most conveniently analyzed in terms of D3-branes. We show that a sector of the theory, which corresponds to placing an odd number of D3-branes at orientifold fixed points, can give rise to an SU(5) gauge theory with three generations of chiral matter fields. The resulting model is not fully realistic, but the relative ease with which an adequate gauge group and matter content can be obtained is promising. The model is also of interest from the point of view of supersymmetry breaking. We show that, f…
This paper studies the compatibility of having a grand unification scheme for particle physics, while at the same time having a perturbative string theory description of such a scheme on a D-brane. This is studied in a model independent approach and finds a negative result. Some additional observations related to model building on branes are made.
By employing D6-branes intersecting at angles in $D = 4$ type I strings, we construct {\em five stack} string GUT models (PS-II class), that contain at low energy {\em exactly the Standard model} with no extra matter and/or extra gauge group factors. These classes of models are based on the Pati-Salam (PS) gauge group $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$. They represent deformations around the quark and lepton basic intersection number structure. The models possess the same phenomenological characteristics of some recently discussed examples (PS-A and PS-I class) of four stack PS GUTS. Name…
Motivated by potential phenomenological applications, we develop the necessary tools for building GUT models in F-theory. This approach is quite flexible because the local geometrical properties of singularities in F-theory compactifications encode the physical content of the theory. In particular, we show how geometry determines the gauge group, matter content and Yukawa couplings of a given model. It turns out that these features are beautifully captured by a four-dimensional topologically twisted N=4 theory which has been coupled to a surface defect theory on which chiral matter can propaga…

These classes of models are based on the Pati-Salam (PS) gauge group $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$. We give a general description of gauge symmetry breaking using vertical and remainder fluxes in 4D F-theory models. The fluxes can break a geometric gauge group to a smaller group and induce chiral matter, even when the larger group admits no chiral matter representations. We focus specifically on applications to realizations of the Standard Model gauge group and chiral matter spectrum through breaking of rigid exceptional gauge groups $E_7, E_6$, which are ubiquitous in the 4D F-theory landscape. Supplemented by an intermediate $\mathrm{SU}(5)$ group, these large classes of models give natura…
D3-branes are often a necessary ingredient in global compactifications of F-theory. In minimal realizations of flavor hierarchies in F-theory GUT models, suitable fluxes are turned on, which in turn attract D3-branes to the Yukawa points. Of particular importance are ``E-type'' Yukawa points, as they are required to realize a large top quark mass. In this paper we study the worldvolume theory of a D3-brane probing such an E-point. D3-brane probes of isolated exceptional singularities lead to strongly coupled N = 2 CFTs of the type found by Minahan and Nemeschansky. We show that the local data …
We consider 5-dimensional supersymmetric field theories where supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism (or, equivalently, by the F-term VEV of the radion). In such models, the radion effective potential is calculable in terms of the 5d gauge coupling, the UV cutoff of the 5d field theory, and the field content. We provide simple, explicit formulae for the leading part of the two-loop effective potential. Our analysis applies in particular to 5d orbifold GUTs motivated by heterotic orbifold models. We focus on potentially realistic models of this type and make the additional assu…
Local supersymmetry (SUSY) provides an attractive framework for the incorporation of gravity and unification of gauge interactions within Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). Its breakdown can lead to a variety of models with softly broken SUSY at low energies. In this review article we focus on the SUSY extension of the Standard Model (SM) with an extra U(1)_{N} gauge symmetry originating from a string-inspired E_6 grand unified gauge group. Only in this U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) inspired by E_6 GUTs the right-handed neutrinos can be superheavy providing a m…
We construct global F-theory GUT models on del Pezzo surfaces in compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds realized as complete intersections of two hypersurface constraints. The intersections of the GUT brane and the flavour branes as well as the gauge flux are described by the spectral cover construction. We consider a split S[U(4) x U(1)_X] spectral cover, which allows for the phenomenologically relevant Yukawa couplings and GUT breaking to the MSSM via hypercharge flux while preventing dimension-4 proton decay. General expressions for the massless spectrum, consistency conditions and a new method for t…
We discuss the appearance of non-supersymmetric D6-brane GUT model constructions. We focus on the construction of the first examples of flipped SU(5) and SU(5) GUTS which have only the SM at low energy. These constructions are based on 4D compactifications in Z3 toroidal orientifolds of type IIA with D6-branes intersecting at angles.
We study D-branes in the extended geometry appearing in exceptional field theory (or exceptional generalised geometry). Starting from the exceptional sigma model (an $E_{d(d)}$ covariant worldsheet action with extra target space coordinates), we define open string boundary conditions. We write down Neumann and Dirichlet projectors compatible with the preservation of half-maximal supersymmetry by the brane (building on previous work on the definition of generalised orientifold quotients in exceptional field theory). This leads to a definition of D-branes, plus their S-duals, as particular subsp…
Both brane tilings and exceptional collections are useful tools for describing the low energy gauge theory on a stack of D3-branes probing a Calabi-Yau singularity. We provide a dictionary that translates between these two heretofore unconnected languages. Given a brane tiling, we compute an exceptional collection of line bundles associated to the base of the non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold. Given an exceptional collection, we derive the periodic quiver of the gauge theory which is the graph theoretic dual of the brane tiling. Our results give new insight to the construction of quiver theorie…
The charges of the twisted D-branes for the two exceptional cases (SO(8) with the triality automorphism and E_6 with charge conjugation) are determined. To this end the corresponding NIM-reps are expressed in terms of the fusion rules of the invariant subalgebras. As expected the charge groups are found to agree with those characterising the untwisted branes.
It is a well-known result by Hanany and Witten that, when two five-branes move across each other, D3-branes stretching between them are generated. Later the same brane configurations played a crucial role in understanding the worldvolume theory of multiple M2-branes. Recently the partition function of multiple M2-branes was transformed to the Fredholm determinant for quantum algebraic curves, where the characteristic 3/2 power law of degrees of freedom is reproduced and the determinant enjoys a large symmetry given by exceptional Weyl groups. The large exceptional Weyl group reproduces the Han…
We demonstrate that a strongly exceptional collection on a singular toric surface can be used to derive the gauge theory on a stack of D3-branes probing the Calabi-Yau singularity caused by the surface shrinking to zero size. A strongly exceptional collection, i.e., an ordered set of sheaves satisfying special mapping properties, gives a convenient basis of D-branes. We find such collections and analyze the gauge theories for weighted projective spaces, and many of the Y^{p,q} and L^{p,q,r} spaces. In particular, we prove the strong exceptionality for all p in the Y^{p,p-1} case, and similarly…
It has been shown that membranes and fivebranes are wave-like or monopole-like solutions in some higher dimensional theory. Here the picture is completed by combining the wave and monopole solutions into a single solution of Exceptional Field Theory. This solution solves the twisted self-duality constraint. The 1/2 BPS brane spectrum, consisting of fundamental, solitonic and Dirichlet branes, in ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity may all be extracted from this single solution of Exceptional Field Theory. The solution's properties such as the singularity structure and its asymptotic behav…
We study how exotic branes, i.e. branes whose tensions are proportional to $g_s^{-α}$, with $α>2$, are realised in Exceptional Field Theory (EFT). The generalised torsion of the Weitzenböck connection of the $\operatorname{SL}(5)$ EFT which, in the language of gauged supergravity describes the embedding tensor, is shown to classify the exotic branes whose magnetic fluxes can fit into four internal dimensions. By analysing the weight diagrams of the corresponding representations of $\operatorname{SL}(5)$ we determine the U-duality orbits relating geometric and non-geometric fluxes. As a further…
We systematically analyse globally consistent SU(5) GUT models on intersecting D7-branes in genuine Calabi-Yau orientifolds with O3- and O7-planes. Beyond the well-known tadpole and K-theory cancellation conditions there exist a number of additional subtle but quite restrictive constraints. For the realisation of SU(5) GUTs with gauge symmetry breaking via U(1)_Y flux we present two classes of suitable Calabi-Yau manifolds defined via del Pezzo transitions of the elliptically fibred hypersurface P_{1,1,1,6,9}[18] and of the Quintic P_{1,1,1,1,1}[5], respectively. To define an orientifold proje…
We discuss the first string theory examples of three generation non-supersymmetric SU(5) and {\em flipped} SU(5) GUTS, which break to the Standard model at low energy, without extra matter and/or gauge group factors. Our GUT examples are based on IIA $Z_3$ orientifolds with D6-branes intersecting at non-trivial angles. These theories necessarily satisfy RR tadpoles and are free of NSNS tadpoles as the complex structure moduli are frozen (even though a dilaton tadpole remains) to discrete values. We identify appropriately the bifundamental Higgses responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. …
We consider type IIB theory compactified on a two-sphere in the presence of mutually nonlocal 7-branes. The BPS states associated with the gauge vectors of exceptional groups are seen to arise from open strings connecting the 7-branes, and multi-pronged open strings capable of ending on more than two 7-branes. These multi-pronged strings are built from open string junctions that arise naturally when strings cross 7-branes. The different string configurations can be multiplied as traditional open strings, and are shown to generate the structure of exceptional groups.
We examine the issue of generating the perturbatively absent ${\bf 10} \cdot {\bf 10} \cdot {\bf 5}^H$ SU(5)/flipped SU(5)Yukawa couplings in type II D-brane orientifold compactifications of string theory both at the perturbative (PER) and the non-perturbative (NP) level. We find at the PER level, higher order terms like $ {\bf 10} \cdot {\bf 10} \cdot {\bf{\bar 5}}^H \cdot{\bf{\bar 5}}^H \cdot {\bf{\bar 5}}^H \cdot {\bf{\bar 5}}^H \cdot {\bf 1}^H \cdot {\bf 1}^H$ in SU(5) may be responsible for the relevant quark mass generation in models with general intersecting D6-branes. Euclidean D2-bran…
We develop the M-brane actions proposed in arXiv:1607.04265 by using $η$-symbols determined in arXiv:1708.06342. Introducing $η$-forms that are defined with the $η$-symbols, we present U-duality-covariant M-brane actions which describe the known brane worldvolume theories for M$p$-branes with $p=0,2,5$. We show that the self-duality relation known in the double sigma model is naturally generalized to M-branes. In particular, for an M5-brane, the self-duality relation is nontrivially realized, where the Hodge star operator is defined with the familiar M5-brane metric while the $η$-form contains…
We study the M-theory five-brane wrapped around the Seiberg-Witten curves for pure classical and exceptional groups given by an integrable system. Generically, the D4-branes arise as cuts that collapse to points after compactifying the eleventh dimension and going to the semiclassical limit, producing brane configurations of NS5- and D4-branes with N=2 gauge theories on the world volume of the four-branes. We study the symmetries of the different curves to see how orientifold planes are related to the involutions needed to obtain the distinguished Prym variety of the curve. This explains the s…
We prove that 1+1 and 2+2 target `spacetimes' of a 0-brane are exceptional signatures. Our proof is based on the requirement of SL(2,R) and `Lorentz' symmetries of a first order lagrangian. Using a special kind of 0-brane called `quatl', we also show that the exceptional signatures 1+1 and 2+2 are closely related. Moreover, we argue that the 2+2 target `spacetime' can be understood either as 2+2 worldvolume `spacetime' or as `1+1-matrix-brane'. The possibility that the exceptional 2+2-signature implies an exceptional chirotope is briefly outlined.
We provide a general overview of the current state of the art in three generation model building proposals - using intersecting D-brane toroidal compactifications of IIA string theories - which have, only, the SM at low energy. In this context, we focus on these model building directions, where natural non-supersymmetric constructions based on $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$, SU(5) and flipped SU(5) GUT groups, have at low energy only the Standard Model. In the flipped SU(5) GUTS, the special build up structure of the models accommodates naturally a see-saw mechanism and a new solution…
In double field theory, the physical space has been understood as a subspace of the doubled space. Recently, the doubled space is defined as the para-Hermitian manifold and the physical space is realized as a leaf of a foliation of the doubled space. This construction naturally introduces the fundamental 2-form, which plays an important role in a reformulation of string theory known as the Born sigma model. In this paper, we present the Born sigma model for $p$-branes in M-theory and type IIB theory by extending the fundamental 2-form into U-duality-covariant $(p+1)$-forms.
We introduce T-branes, or "triangular branes," which are novel non-abelian bound states of branes characterized by the condition that on some loci, their matrix of normal deformations, or Higgs field, is upper triangular. These configurations refine the notion of monodromic branes which have recently played a key role in F-theory phenomenology. We show how localized matter living on complex codimension one subspaces emerge, and explain how to compute their Yukawa couplings, which are localized in complex codimension two. Not only do T-branes clarify what is meant by brane monodromy, they also …
In recent years, it has been widely argued that the duality transformations of string and M-theory naturally imply the existence of so-called `exotic branes'---low codimension objects with highly non-perturbative tensions, scaling as $g_s^α$ for $α\leq -3$. We argue that their intimate link with these duality transformations make them an ideal object of study using the general framework of Double Field Theory (DFT) and Exceptional Field Theory (EFT)---collectively referred to as ExFT. Parallel to the theme of dualities, we also stress that these theories unify known solutions in string- and M-…
Massless particles in $n+1$ dimensions lead to massive particles in $n$ dimensions on Kaluza-Klein reduction. In string theory, wrapped branes lead to multiplets of massive particles in $n$ dimensions, in representations of a duality group $G$. By encoding the masses of these particles in auxiliary worldline scalars, also transforming under $G$, we write an action which resembles that for a massless particle on an extended spacetime. We associate this extended spacetime with that appearing in double field theory and exceptional field theory, and formulate a version of the action which is invar…
In this paper we advance the program of using exceptional collections to understand the gauge theory description of a D-brane probing a Calabi-Yau singularity. To this end, we strengthen the connection between strong exceptional collections and fractional branes. To demonstrate our ideas, we derive a strong exceptional collection for every Y^{p,q} singularity, and also prove that this collection is simple.
Bars and Sezgin have proposed a super Yang-Mills theory in $D=s+t=11+3$ space-time dimensions with an electric 3-brane that generalizes the 2-brane of M-theory. More recently, the authors found an infinite family of exceptional super Yang-Mills theories in $D=(8n+3)+3$ via the so-called Magic Star algebras. A particularly interesting case occurs in signature $D=27+3$, where the superalgebra is centrally extended by an electric 11-brane and its 15-brane magnetic dual. The worldvolume symmetry of the 11-brane has signature $D=11+3$ and can reproduce super Yang-Mills theory in $D=11+3$. Upon redu…
We construct semi-local and global realizations of SU(5) GUTs in F-theory that utilize a U(1)_PQ symmetry to protect against dimension four proton decay. Symmetries of this type, which assign charges to H_u and H_d that forbid a tree level μterm, play an important role in scenarios for neutrino physics and gauge mediation that have been proposed in local F-theory model building. As demonstrated in arXiv:0906.4672, the presence of such a symmetry implies the existence of non-GUT exotics in the spectrum, when hypercharge flux is used to break the GUT group and to give rise to doublet-triplet spl…
We generalize the (p,q) 5-brane web construction of five-dimensional field theories by introducing (p,q) 7-branes, and apply this construction to theories with a one-dimensional Coulomb branch. The 7-branes render the exceptional global symmetry of these theories manifest. Additionally, 7-branes allow the construction of all E_n theories up to n=8, previously not possible in 5-brane configurations. The exceptional global symmetry in the field theory is a subalgebra of an affine symmetry on the 7-branes, which is necessary for the existence of the system. We explicitly determine the quantum num…
A "dessin d'enfant" is a graph embedded on a two-dimensional oriented surface named by Grothendieck. Recently we have developed a new way to keep track of non-localness among 7-branes in F-theory on an elliptic fibration over $P^1$ by drawing a triangulated "dessin" on the base. To further demonstrate the usefulness of this method, we provide three examples of its use. We first consider a deformation of the $I_0^*$ Kodaira fiber. With a dessin, we can immediately find out which pairs of 7-branes are (non-)local and compute their monodromies. We next identify the paths of string(-junction)s on …
We reinterpret the generalised Lie derivative of M-theory $E_6$ generalised geometry as hamiltonian flow on a graded symplectic supermanifold. The hamiltonian acts as the nilpotent derivative of the tensor hierarchy of exceptional field theory. This construction is an M-theory analogue of the Courant algebroid and reveals the $L_\infty$-algebra underlying the tensor hierarchy. The AKSZ construction identifies that same hamiltonian with the lagrangian of a 7-dimensional generalisation of Chern-Simons theory that reduces to the M5-brane Wess-Zumino term on 5-brane boundaries. The exercise repeat…
In a recent paper it was shown that fundamental strings are null waves in Double Field Theory. Similarly, membranes are waves in exceptional extended geometry. Here the story is continued by showing how various branes are Kaluza-Klein monopoles of these higher dimensional theories. Examining the specific case of the E7 exceptional extended geometry, we see that all branes are both waves and monopoles. Along the way we discuss the O(d; d) transformation of localized brane solutions not associated to an isometry and how true T-duality emerges in Double Field Theory when the background possesses …
We present a method based on mutations of helices which leads to the construction (in the large volume limit) of exceptional coherent sheaves associated with the $(\sum_al_a=0)$ orbits in Gepner models. This is explicitly verified for a few examples including some cases where the ambient weighted projective space has singularities not inherited by the Calabi-Yau hypersurface. The method is based on two conjectures which lead to the analog,in the general case, of the Beilinson quiver for $\BP^n$. We discuss how one recovers the McKay quiver using the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) near the or…
In U-duality-manifest formulations, supergravity fields are packaged into covariant objects such as the generalized metric and $p$-form fields $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$. While a parameterization of the generalized metric in terms of supergravity fields is known for U-duality groups $E_n$ with $n\leq 8$, a parameterization of $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$ has not been fully determined. In this paper, we propose a systematic method to determine the parameterization of $\mathcal{A}_p^{I_p}$, which necessarily involves mixed-symmetry potentials. We also show how to systematically obtain the T- and S-duality t…
In the quest for the mathematical formulation of M-theory, we consider three major open problems: a first-principles construction of the single (abelian) M5-brane Lagrangian density, the origin of the gauge field in heterotic M-theory, and the supersymmetric enhancement of exceptional M-geometry. By combining techniques from homotopy theory and from supergeometry to what we call super-exceptional geometry within super-homotopy theory, we present an elegant joint solution to all three problems. This leads to a unified description of the Nambu-Goto, Perry-Schwarz, and topological Yang-Mills Lagr…
We study the interplay between discrete quantum symmetries at certain points in the moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications, and the associated identities that the geometric realization of D-brane monodromies must satisfy. We show that in a wide class of examples, both local and compact, the monodromy identities in question always follow from a single mathematical statement. One of the simplest examples is the Z_5 symmetry at the Gepner point of the quintic, and the associated D-brane monodromy identity.
The doublet--triplet mass splitting problem is one of the most serious problems in supersymmetric grand unified theories (GUTs). A class of models based on a product gauge group, such as the SU(5)_{GUT} times U(3)_H or the SU(5)_{GUT} times U(2)_H, realize naturally the desired mass splitting that is protected by an unbroken R symmetry. It has been pointed out that various features in the models suggest that these product-group unification models are embedded in a supersymmetric brane world. We show an explicit construction of those models in the supersymmetric brane world based on the Type II…
We investigate supersymmetric SU(5) grand-unified theories (GUTs) realized in 5 space-time dimensions and broken down to the MSSM by SU(5)-violating boundary conditions on a S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') orbifold with two 3-branes. The doublet-triplet splitting problem is entirely avoided by locating the MSSM Higgs doublets on the brane on which SU(5) is not a good symmetry. An extremely simple model is then described in which the MSSM matter is also located on this SU(5)-violating brane. Although this model does not unify the MSSM matter within SU(5) multiplets, it explains gauge coupling unification. A s…
We consider resolutions of codimension-two enhanced singularities from $SO(12)$ to $E_7$ and from $E_7$ to $E_8$ in six-dimensional F-theory, where a half-hypermultiplet arises for generic complex structures achieving them. The exceptional fibers at the enhanced point exhibit different structures depending on how the colliding 7-brane approaches the stack of gauge 7-branes, as previously observed by Morrison and Taylor in the case of the enhancement from $SU(6)$ to $E_6$. When the colliding brane approaches them as $O(s)$, where $s$ is the coordinate of the base space along the gauge 7-branes,…
We discuss aspects of the dictionary between brane configurations in del Pezzo geometries and dibaryons in the dual superconformal quiver gauge theories. The basis of fractional branes defining the quiver theory at the singularity has a K-theoretic dual exceptional collection of bundles which can be used to read off the spectrum of dibaryons in the weakly curved dual geometry. Our prescription identifies the R-charge R and all baryonic U(1) charges Q_I with divisors in the del Pezzo surface without any Weyl group ambiguity. As one application of the correspondence, we identify the cubic anomal…
A new super-exceptional embedding construction of the heterotic M5-brane's sigma-model was recently shown to produce, at leading order in the super-exceptional vielbein components, the super-Nambu-Goto (Green-Schwarz-type) Lagrangian for the embedding fields plus the Perry-Schwarz Lagrangian for the free abelian self-dual higher gauge field. Beyond that, further fields and interactions emerge in the model, arising from probe M2- and probe M5-brane wrapping modes. Here we classify the full super-exceptional field content and work out some of its characteristic interactions from the rich super-e…
We review recent progress in the construction of four-dimensional vacua of Type II string theory and F-theory which yield the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) or extensions thereof. In Type II orientifold compactifications the SM gauge group and chiral spectrum arise from the open string sector of the theory, namely from stacks of D-branes. The universal features of the chiral spectrum between various sets of D-branes allow for a general approach to build realistic models, which can be implemented in different setups. We describe the realisation of this strategy in Type II Calabi-Yau or…
We analyze in detail the case of a marginally stable D-Brane on a collapsed del Pezzo surface in a Calabi-Yau threefold using the derived category of quiver representations and the idea of aligned gradings. We show how the derived category approach to D-branes provides a straight-forward and rigorous construction of quiver gauge theories associated to such singularities. Our method shows that a procedure involving exceptional collections used elsewhere in the literature is only valid if some tachyon-inducing Ext3 groups are zero. We then analyze in generality a large class of Seiberg dualities…
We present a new construction of four dimensional $\mathcal N=3$ theories, given by M5 branes wrapping a $T^2$ in an M-theory U-fold background. The resulting setup generalizes the one used in the usual class $\mathcal S$ construction of four dimensional theories by using an extra discrete symmetry on the M5 worldvolume. Together with the M-theory U-fold description of $(0,2)$ $E$-type six-dimensional SCFTs, this allows to construct new, exceptional, $\mathcal N=3$ theories.
The low energy gauge theory living on D-branes probing a del Pezzo singularity of a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold is not unique. In fact there is a large equivalence class of such gauge theories related by Seiberg duality. As a step toward characterizing this class, we show that Seiberg duality can be defined consistently as an admissible mutation of a strongly exceptional collection of coherent sheaves.
A classical $E_{d(d)}$-invariant Hamiltonian formulation of world-volume theories of half-BPS p-branes in type IIb and eleven-dimensional supergravity is proposed, extending known results to $d \leq 6$. It consists of a Hamiltonian, characterised by a generalised metric, and a current algebra constructed s.t. it reproduces the $E_{d(d)}$ generalised Lie derivative. $E_{d(d)}$-covariance necessitates the introduction of so-called charges, specifying the type of p-brane and the choice of section. For p>2, currents of p-branes are generically non-geometric due to the imposition of U-duality, e.g.…
D3-brane probes of E-type Yukawa points lead to strongly coupled nearly conformal sectors nearby the Standard Model (visible sector) which are motivated by F-theory GUTs. Realistic visible sector brane configurations induce a seesaw mass hierarchy in the hidden sector with light GUT singlets charged under a strongly coupled hidden sector U(1). Interpreting these GUT singlets as dark matter, this leads to a matter genesis scenario where the freeze out and subsequent decay of heavy mediators between the two sectors simultaneously populates comparable amounts of baryon and dark matter asymmetry. …
Some time ago, Sezgin, Bars and Nishino have proposed super Yang-Mills theories (SYM's) in $D=11+3$ and beyond. Using the "Magic Star" projection of $\mathfrak{e}_{8(-24)}$, we show that the geometric structure of SYM's in $11+3$ and $12+4$ space-time dimensions is recovered from the affine symmetry of the space $AdS_{4}\otimes S^{8}$, with the $8$-sphere being a line in the Cayley plane. By reducing to transverse transformations, along maximal embeddings, the near horizon geometries of the M2-brane ($AdS_{4}\otimes S^{7}$) and M5-brane ($AdS_{7}\otimes S^{4}$) are recovered. Generalizing the …
We study the effects of quantum production of open strings on the relativistic scattering of D-branes. We find strong corrections to the brane trajectory from copious production of highly-excited open strings, whose typical oscillator level is proportional to the square of the rapidity. In the corrected trajectory, the branes rapidly coincide and remain trapped in a configuration with enhanced symmetry. This is a purely stringy effect which makes relativistic brane collisions exceptionally inelastic. We trace this effect to velocity-dependent corrections to the open-string mass, which render o…
