We examine the quantum theory of the spontaneous breaking of lattice rotation symmetry in d-wave superconductors on the square lattice. This is described by a field theory of an Ising nematic order parameter coupled to the gapless fermionic quasiparticles. We determine the structure of the renormalization group to all orders in a 1/N_f expansion, where N_f is the number of fermion spin components. Asymptotically exact results are obtained for the quantum critical theory in which, as in the large N_f theory, the nematic order has a large anomalous dimension, and the fermion spectral functions are highly anisotropic.
Motivated by the nematic electronic fluid phase in Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7}, we develop a combined scheme of the renormalization-group method and the random-phase-approximation-type method, and analyze orbital susceptibilities of the (d_{xz},d_{yz})-orbital Hubbard model with high accuracy. It is confirmed that the present model exhibits a ferro-orbital instability near the magnetic or superconducting quantum criticality, due to the Aslamazov-Larkin-type vertex corrections. This mechanism of orbital nematic order presents a natural explanation for the nematic order in Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7}, and is expect…
Recently, complex phase transitions accompanied by the rotational symmetry breaking have been discovered experimentally in cuprate superconductors. To find the realized order parameters, we study various charge susceptibilities in an unbiased way, by applying the functional-renormalization-group method to the realistic $d$-$p$ Hubbard model. Without assuming the wavevector of the order parameter, we reveal that the most dominant instability is the uniform ($q = 0$) charge modulation on the $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals, which possesses the d-symmetry. This uniform nematic order triggers another nem…
The lifting of $d_{xz}$-$d_{yz}$ orbital degeneracy is often considered a hallmark of the nematic phase of Fe-based superconductors, including FeSe, but its origin is not yet understood. Here we report a high resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy study of single crystals of FeSe, accounting for the photon-energy dependence and making a detailed analysis of the temperature dependence. We find that the hole pocket undergoes a fourfold-symmetry-breaking distortion in the nematic phase below 90~K, but in contrast the changes to the electron pockets do not require fourfold symmetry-b…
We study experimental signatures of the Ising nematic quantum phase transition in d-wave superconductors, associated with the change of lattice symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic in the superconducting state. The characteristic feature of this transition is that the ratio between the Fermi velocity $v_F$ and gap velocity $v_Δ$ flows to a maximally anisotropic fixed point, i.e. the renormalization group fixed point is situated at (v_Δ/v_F)^*=0$. Our main point is that the logarithmic approach to this fixed point has visible signatures in the thermal transport. The analysis of the quasipar…
We consider the impact of the competition among superconductivity, spin density wave, and nematic order in iron pnictides, and show that the ordering competition substantially reshapes the global phase diagram. We perform a detailed renormalization group analysis of an effective field theory of iron pnictides and derive the flow equations of all the physical parameters. Using these results, we find that superconductivity can be strongly suppressed by the ordering competition, and also extract the $T$-dependence of superfluid density. Moreover, the phase transitions may become first order. Inte…
Recent discoveries of charge order and electronic nematic order in the iron-based superconductors and cuprates have pointed towards the possibility of nematic and charge fluctuations playing a role in the enhancement of superconductivity. The Ba1-xSrxNi2As2 system, closely related in structure to the BaFe2As2 system, has recently been shown to exhibit both types of ordering without the presence of any magnetic order. We report single crystal X-ray diffraction, resistance transport measurements, and magnetization of \BaSrLate, providing evidence that the previously reported incommensurate charg…
The origin of spontaneous electronic nematic ordering provides important information for understanding iron-based superconductors. Here, we analyze a scenario where the $d_{xy}$ orbital strongly contributes to nematic ordering in FeSe. We show that the addition of $d_{xy}$ nematicity to a pure $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ order provides a natural explanation for the unusual Fermi surface and correctly reproduces the strongly anisotropic momentum dependence of the superconducting gap. We predict a Lifshitz transition of an electron pocket mediated by temperature and sulphur doping, whose signatures we discu…
We present $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements on single-crystalline FeSe under pressures up to 2 GPa. Based on the observation of the splitting and broadening of the NMR spectrum due to structural twin domains, we discovered that static, local nematic ordering exists well above the bulk nematic ordering temperature, $T_{\rm s}$. The static, local nematic order and the low-energy stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, as revealed by NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements, are both insensitive to pressure application. These NMR results provide clear evidence for the microscopic cooperat…
We show, by means of dynamical mean-field theory calculations, that the experimental fingerprints of the nematic order in iron-based superconductors are intrinsically connected with the electronic correlations in the Hund's correlated metallic state and they can not be accessed via a renormalized quasiparticle picture. In particular, our results show that: (i) in a metal in which correlations are dominated by the Hund's coupling the nematic ordering does not produce a rigid energy shift in the photoemission spectra, but a much richer spectral weight redistribution which mirrors the experimenta…
Recent neutron scattering observations by Plumb et al. [1] reveal that the ground state of $FeSc_2S_4$ is magnetic with two distinct Fe environments, instead of a quantum spin liquid as had been previously thought. Starting with the relevant O(N)-symmetric vector model of $FeSc_2S_4$, we study how the discrete ($Z_2$) and continuous rotational symmetries are successively broken, yielding nematic and ordered phases. At high temperatures, we find that the nematic order parameter falls as $T^{-γ}$ ($γ>0$), and therefore, $FeSc_2S_4$ lacks any distinct nematic ordering temperature. This feature in…
Motivated by recent observation of a new high field phase near saturation in chromium spinels $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$ ($A=$ Zn, Cd, Hg), we study the $S = 3/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with biquadratic interactions. Magnon instability analysis at the saturation field reveals that a very small biquadratic interaction can induce magnon pairing in pyrochlore antiferromagnets, which leads to the emergence of a ferro-quadrupolar phase, or equivalently a spin nematic phase, below the saturation field. We present the magnetic phase diagram in an applied field, studying both $S=3/2$ and $S=1$ spin…
The interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneously broken "internal" symmetries in two-dimensional electron systems with spin or pseudospin degrees of freedom gives rise to a variety of interesting phenomena, including novel phases, phase transitions, and topological excitations. Here we develop a theory of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states, applicable to a class of multi-valley systems, where the symmetry at issue is a point group element that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The anisotropy of the dispersion relation, generally present in such sys…
Nematic order is an exotic property observed in several strongly correlated systems, such as the iron-based superconductors. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques, we study at zero-temperature the nematic spin liquid that competes with spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We use these nematic orders to characterize different quantum phases and quantum phase transitions. More specifically, we study a spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice with couplings beyond nearest neighbors. We focus on parameter regions around the highly symm…
By combining DFT-based computational analysis and symmetry constraints in terms of group-subgroup relations, we analysed the formation of the native crystalline structure of loellingite FeAs$_2$. We showed that the ground state of the material exhibits the ordered patterns of the electronic localization which are mainly associated with iron $3d_{x^2 - y^2}$ orbitals and can be characterized in terms of nematic-like ordering. The ordering is the result of the close interplay of the lattice and the electron degrees of freedom. In a structural aspect, it pursues an energy quest to select the orth…
We study the interplay between charge and spin ordering in electronic liquid crystalline states with a particular emphasis on fluctuating spin stripe phenomena observed in recent neutron scattering experiments\cite{Hinkov2008, Haug2009}. Based on a phenomenological model, we propose that charge nematic ordering is indeed behind the formation of temperature dependent incommensurate inelastic peaks near wavevector $(π,π)$ in the dynamic structure factor of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$. We strengthen this claim by providing a compelling fit to the experimental data which cannot be reproduced by a numbe…
In a recent PRL Barci and Stariolo (BS) generalized the well known Brazovskii model to include an additional rotationally invariant quartic interaction and study this model in two dimensions (2d). Depending on the parameters of the model, BS find two transitions: a first order isotropic-lamellar (striped) or a second order isotropic-nematic (which they speculate to be in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class). Using a simple symmetry argument, I show that the striped phase found by BS can not exist in 2d. Furthermore, I argue that based on the coarse-grained action used by BS it is imposs…
We study a spin-one Heisenberg model with exchange interaction, J, uniaxial single-ion exchange anisotropy, D, and Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field, B, parallel to the symmetry axis. We com- pute the (D/J,B/J) quantum phase diagram for square and simple cubic lattices by combining an- alytical and Quantum Monte Carlo approaches, and find a transition between XY-antiferromagnetic and ferronematic phases that spontaneously break the U(1) symmetry of the model. In the language of bosonic gases, this is a transition between a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of single bosons and a BEC of pairs. O…
Spin-driven nematicity, or the breaking of the point-group symmetry of the lattice without long-range magnetic order, is clearly quite important in iron-based superconductors. From a symmetry point of view, nematic order can be described as a coherent locking of spin fluctuations in two interpenetrating Néel sublattices with ensuing nearest-neighbor bond order and an absence of static magnetism. Here, we argue that the low-temperature state of the recently discovered superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O is a strong candidate for a more exotic form of spin-driven nematic order, in which fluctuations …
Using functional renormalization group methods, we study an effective low-energy model describing the Ising-nematic quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals. We treat both gapless fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom on equal footing and explicitly calculate the momentum and frequency dependent effective interaction between the fermions mediated by the bosonic fluctuations. Following earlier work by S.-S. Lee for a one-patch model, Metlitski and Sachdev [Phys. Rev. B {\bf{82}}, 075127] recently found within a field-theoretical approach that certain three-loop diagrams strongly modi…
A d-wave high temperature cuprate superconductor exhibits a nematic ordering transition at zero temperature. Near the quantum critical point, the coupling between gapless nodal quasiparticles and nematic order parameter fluctuation can result in unusual behaviors, such as extreme anisotropy of fermion velocities. We study the disorder effect on the nematic quantum critical behavior and especially on the flow of fermion velocities. The disorders that couple to nodal quasiparticles are divided into three types: random mass, random gauge field, and random chemical potential. A renormalization gro…
We perform a non-perturbative analysis of the strong interaction between gapless nodal fermions and the nematic order parameter in two-dimensional d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. We predict that the critical nematic fluctuation can generate a dynamical nodal gap if the fermion flavor N is smaller than a threshold N_c. Such gap generation leads to an additional is-wave Cooper pairing instability, which induces a fully gapped d_{x^2-y^2}+is superconducting dome in the vicinity of the nematic quantum critical point. The opening of a dynamical gap has important consequences, including the saturation …
The newly discovered high temperature superconductor SmFeAs(O1-xFx) shows a clear nematic transition where the square lattice of Fe ions has a rectangular distortion. Similar nematic ordering has also been observed in the cuprate superconductors. We provide a detailed theory of experimental observables near such a nematic transition: we calculate the scaling of specific heat, local density of states (LDOS) and NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1T.
We investigate twisted bilayer graphene near charge neutrality using a generalized Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model, accounting for corrugation effects. The Fermi velocity vanishes for particular twist angles properly reproducing the physics of the celebrated magic angles. Using group representation theory, we identify all contact interaction potentials compatible with the symmetries of the model. This enables us to identify two classes of quartic interactions leading to either the opening of a gap or to nematic ordering. We then implement a renormalization group analysis to study the comp…
The gapless nodal fermions exhibit non-Fermi liquid behaviors at the nematic quantum critical point that is supposed to exist in some $d$-wave cuprate superconductors. This non-Fermi liquid state may be turned into a disorder-dominated diffusive metal if the fermions also couple to a disordered potential that generates a relevant perturbation in the sense of renormalization group theory. It is therefore necessary to examine whether a specific disorder is relevant or not. We study the interplay between critical nematic fluctuation and random chemical potential by performing renormalization grou…
We study theoretically the destruction of spin nematic order due to quantum fluctuations in quasi-one dimensional spin-1 magnets. If the nematic ordering is disordered by condensing disclinations then quantum Berry phase effects induce dimerization in the resulting paramagnet. We develop a theory for a Landau-forbidden second order transition between the spin nematic and dimerized states found in recent numerical calculations. Numerical tests of the theory are suggested.
We study S=1 kagome antiferromagnets with isotropic Heisenberg exchange $J$ and strong easy axis single-ion anisotropy $D$. For $D \gg J$, the low-energy physics can be described by an effective $S=1/2$ $XXZ$ model with antiferromagnetic $J_z \sim J$ and ferromagnetic $J_\perp \sim J^2/D$. Exploiting this connection, we argue that non-trivial ordering into a "spin-nematic" occurs whenever $D$ dominates over $J$, and discuss its experimental signatures. We also study a magnetic field induced transition to a magnetization plateau state at magnetization 1/3 which breaks lattice translation symmet…
For S=1 system with general isotropic nearest-neighbor exchange, we derive the low-energy description of the spin nematic phase in terms of the RP^{2} nonlinear sigma-model. In one dimension, quantum fluctuations destroy long-range nematic (quadrupolar) ordering, leading to the formation of a gapped spin liquid state being an analog of the Haldane phase for a spin nematic. Nematic analog of the Belavin-Polyakov instanton with π_{2} topological charge 1/2 is constructed. In two dimensions the long-range order is destroyed by thermal fluctuations and at finite temperature the system is in a reno…
In frustrated magnets when magnetic ordering is suppressed down to low temperature, the formation of a quantum spin liquid becomes a possibility. How such a spin liquid manifests in the presence of conduction electrons is a question with potentially rich physical consequences, particularly when both the localized spins and conduction electrons reside on frustrated lattices. We propose a novel mechanism for symmetry breaking in systems where conduction electrons hybridize with a quantum spin liquid through Kondo couplings. We apply this to the pyrochlore iridate Pr2Ir2O7, which exhibits an anom…
As an example of ordering due to quantum fluctuations, we examine the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic quantum O(n) rotor model on the pyrochlore lattice. Classically, this system remains disordered even at zero temperature; we find that adding quantum fluctuations induces an ordered phase that survives to positive temperature, and we determine how its phase diagram scales with the coupling constant and the number of spin components. We demonstrate, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, that this phase has long-range spin-nematic order, and that the phase transition into it appears to be fi…
We consider a two-dimensional interacting Fermi system which displays a nematic phase within mean-field theory. The system is analyzed using a non-perturbative renormalization-group scheme. We find that order-parameter fluctuations can suppress the nematic order obtained in mean-field theory even at zero temperature. For a suitable choice of parameters a quantum critical point surrounded by a disordered phase can be realized, giving rise to quantum critical behavior in the absence of an ordered regime in the phase diagram.
We provide strong evidence of the spin-nematic state in a paradigmatic ferro-antiferromagnetic $J_1$--$J_2$ model using analytical and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In zero field, the attraction of spin-flip pairs leads to a first-order transition and no nematic state, while pair-repulsion at larger $J_2$ stabilizes the nematic phase in a narrow region near the pair-condensation field. A devil's staircase of multi-pair condensates is conjectured for weak pair-attraction. A suppression of the spin-flip gap by many-body effects leads to an order-of-magnitude contraction of the ne…
Nematic states are characterized by rotational symmetry breaking without translational ordering. Recently, nematic superconductivity, in which the superconducting gap spontaneously lifts the rotational symmetry of the lattice, has been discovered. However the pairing mechanism and the mechanism determining the nematic orientation remain unresolved. A first step is to demonstrate control of the nematicity, through application of an external symmetry-breaking field, to determine the sign and strength of coupling to the lattice. Here, we report for the first time control of the nematic orientatio…
We show that the ground state of disordered rotor models with quadrupolar interactions can exhibit biaxial nematic ordering in the disorder-averaged sense. We present a mean-field analysis of the model and demonstrate that the biaxial phase is stable against small quantum fluctuations. We point out the possibility of experimental realization of such rotor models using ultracold spin-one Bose atoms in a spin-dependent and disordered optical lattice in the limit of a large number of atoms per site and also suggest an imaging experiment to detect the biaxial nematicity in such systems.
We study the the interplay between spontaneously broken valley symmetry and spatial disorder in multivalley semiconductors in the quantum Hall regime. In cases where valleys have anisotropic electron dispersion a previous long-wavelength analysis [Phys. Rev. B 82, 035428 (2010)] identified two new phases exhibiting the QHE. The first is the quantum Hall Ising nematic (QHIN), a phase with long-range orientational order manifested in macroscopic transport anisotropies. The second is the quantum Hall random-field paramagnet (QHRFPM) that emerges when the Ising ordering is disrupted by quenched di…
We develop a microscopic theory of finite-temperature spin-nematic orderings in three-dimensional spatially anisotropic magnets consisting of weakly-coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a magnetic field. Combining a field theoretical technique with density-matrix renormalization group results, we complete finite-temperature phase diagrams in a wide magnetic-field range that possess spin-bond-nematic and incommensurate spin-density-wave ordered phases. The effects of a four-spin interaction are also studied. The relevance of our results…
The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) of White 1992 remains to this day an integral component of many state-of-the-art methods for efficiently simulating strongly correlated quantum systems. In quantum chemistry, QC-DMRG became a powerful tool for ab initio calculations with the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation. An important issue in QC-DMRG is the so-called ordering problem -- the optimal ordering of DMRG sites corresponding to electronic orbitals that produces the most accurate results. To this end, a commonly used heuristic is the grouping of strongly correlated orbitals as m…
Addressing the nature of an unexpected smectic-A' phase in liquid crystal 54COOBC films, we perform large scale Monte Carlo simulations of a coupled hexatic-nematic XY model. The resulting finite-temperature phase diagram reveals a small region with composite Potts $\mathbb{Z}_3$ order above the vortex binding transition; this phase is characterized by relative hexatic-nematic ordering though both variables are disordered. The system develops algebraic hexatic and nematic order only at a lower temperature. This multi-step melting scenario agrees well with the experimental observations of a sha…
