Nematic order is an exotic property observed in several strongly correlated systems, such as the iron-based superconductors. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques, we study at zero-temperature the nematic spin liquid that competes with spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We use these nematic orders to characterize different quantum phases and quantum phase transitions. More specifically, we study a spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice with couplings beyond nearest neighbors. We focus on parameter regions around the highly symmetric $SU(3)$ point where the bilinear and biquadratic interactions are equal. With growing further-neighbor biquadratic interactions, we identify different spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We find that the DMRG results on cylindrical geometries correctly detect nematicity in different quantum states and accurately characterize the quantum phase transitions among them. Therefore, spin-driven nematicity -- here defined as the spontaneous breaking of the lattice invariance under a 90$^o$ rotation -- is an order parameter which can be studied directly in DMRG calculations in two dimensions in different quantum states.
We report the existence of an extended critical, nondimerized region in the phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-one chain. The dominant power law correlations are ferroquadrupolar, i.e. spin nematic in character. Another known critical region is also characterized by dominant quadrupolar correlations, although with a different wave vector. Our results show that spin nematic correlations play an important role in quantum magnets with spin S >= 1 in regions between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases.
The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the one-dimensional S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model are calculated using the transfer matrix renormalization group. By comparing the results with the experimental data of ${\rm LiVGe_2O_6}$ measured by Millet et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 4176 (1999)), we find that the susceptibility data of this material, after subtracting the impurity contribution, can be quantitatively explained with this model. The biquadratic exchange interaction in this material is found to be ferromagnetic, i.e. with a positive coupling constant.
We study the low-lying spectrum of the bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the dimerized and Haldane phases using a tensor renormalization method. At the (Takhtajan-Babujian) critical point the finite size spectrum predicted by the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model can only partly be confirmed. We find a singlet-singlet gap which does not fit into the WZW systematics. The results obtained are compared to Bethe Ansatz, exact diagonalization, and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for specific parameters.
Using infinite projected entangled pair states, we study the ground state phase diagram of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice directly in the thermodynamic limit. We find an unexpected partially nematic partially magnetic phase in between the antiferroquadrupolar and ferromagnetic regions. Furthermore, we describe all observed phases and discuss the nature of the phase transitions involved.
Within the linear flavor-wave theory, we show that, caused by quantum order-by-disorder mechanism, the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model defined on a honeycomb lattice can spontaneously develop a columnar dimer order with a non-bipartite structure. The low-lying excitations above this novel ground state form several flat bands separated by nonzero energy gaps. Our results suggest that the quantum phase transition separating this dimerized phase with the nearby Néel-order one may be of first order.
Infinite projected entangled pair states simulations of the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice reveal an emergent Haldane phase in between the previously predicted antiferromagnetic and 3-sublattice 120$^\circ$ magnetically ordered phases. This intermediate phase preserves SU(2) spin and translational symmetry but breaks lattice rotational symmetry, and it can be adiabatically connected to the Haldane phase of decoupled $S=1$ chains. Our results contradict previous studies which found a direct transition between the two magnetically ordered states.
An efficient algorithm for SU(2) symmetric matrix product states (MPS) with periodic boundary conditions (PBC) is proposed and implemented. It is applied to a study of the spectrum and correlation properties of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model. We characterize the various phases of this model by the lowest states of the spectrum with angular momentum J = 0, 1, 2 for systems of up to 100 spins. Furthermore, we provide precision results for the dimerization correlator as well as the string correlator.
A bond-operator mean-field theory in the SU(3) bosons representation is developed to describe the antiferro-nematic phase of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model. The calculated static structure factors reveal delicately that the antiferro-nematic state may exhibit both the ferro- and antiferro-quadruple long-range orders, which is reminiscent of the ferrimagnets or the canted antiferromagnets. This result may influence the spin wave theory concerned with this phase. Possible relevance of this unconventional state to the quasi-two-dimensional triangular material NiGa2S4 is addressed.
We analyze the biquadratic bilinear Heisenberg magnet on a honeycomb lattice via Schwinger boson formalism. Due to their vulnerability to quantum fluctuations, non conventional lattices (kagome, triangular and honeycomb for example) have been cited as candidates to support spin liquid states. Such states without long range order at zero temperature are known in one-dimensional spin models but their existence in higher dimensional systems is still under debate. Biquadratic interaction is responsible for various possibilities and phases as it is well-founded for one-dimensional systems. Here we …
We study numerically the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain near the ferromagnetic instability point, where the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized quantum nematic phase has been suggested. Our results, obtained by a highly accurate density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) calculation are consistent with the view that the order parameter characterizing the dimer phase vanishes only at the point where the system becomes ferromagnetic, although the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized phase in a very narrow parameter range between the ferrom…
Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalizations and SU(3) flavour theory, we have precisely mapped out the phase diagram of the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in a magnetic field, with emphasis on the quadrupolar phases and their excitations. In particular, we show that ferroquadrupolar order can coexist with short-range helical magnetic order, and that the antiferroquadrupolar phase is characterized by a remarkable 2/3 magnetization plateau, in which one site per triangle retains quadrupolar order while the other two are polarized along the field. Implicat…
We study the ground-state phase diagram of the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic model\,(BLBQ) on the star lattice with the state-of-art tensor network algorithms. The system has five phases: the ferromagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic, ferroquadrupolar, and spin-liquid phases. The phases and their phase boundaries are determined by examining various local observables, correlation functions and transfer matrices exhaustively. The spin liquid phase, which is the first quantum disordered phase found in two-dimensional BLBQ model, is gapped and devoid of any conventional long-range order. It is also character…
The lowest energy configurations of short odd open chains with classical spins are determined for antiferromagnetic bilinear and biquadratic nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The zero field residual magnetization generates differences with the magnetic behavior of even chains, as the odd chain is like a small magnet for weak magnetic fields. The lowest energy configuration is calculated as a function of the total magnetization M, even for M less than the zero field residual magnetization. Analytic expressions and their proofs are provided for the threshold magnetic field needed to drive …
The S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on anisotropic triangular lattices is investigated by several complementary methods. Our focus is on the stability of the three-sublattice spin nematic state against spatial anisotropy. We find that, deviated from the case of isotropic triangular lattice, quantum fluctuations enhance and the three-sublattice spin nematic order is reduced. In the limit of weakly coupling chains, by mapping the systems to an effective one-dimensional model, we show that the three-sublattice spin nematic order develops at infinitesimal interchain coupling. Our results…
We investigate how to engineer an antisymmetric spin-split band structure under spin density waves with finite ordering wave vectors in centrosymmetric systems without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. On the basis of a perturbative analysis for the spin-charge coupled model in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, we show that nonzero chiral-type bilinear and biquadratic spin cross products in momentum space under the magnetic orderings are related to an antisymmetric spin polarization in the electronic band structure. We apply the derived formula to the single-$Q$ cycloidal spiral and doubl…
The zero-temperature properties of the SO(5) bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg spin chain are investigated by means of a low-energy approach and large scale numerical calculations. In sharp contrast to the spin-1 SO(3) Heisenberg chain, we show that the SO(5) Heisenberg spin chain is dimerized with a two-fold degenerate ground state. On top of this gapful phase, we find the emergence of a non-degenerate gapped phase with hidden (Z$_2$ $\times$ Z$_2$)$^2$ symmetry and spin-3/2 edge states that can be understood from a SO(5) AKLT wave function. We derive a low-energy theory describing the quantum …
Commensurate-incommensurate change on the one-dimensional S=1 bilinear-biquadratic model (${\cal H}(α)=\sum_i \{{\bf S}_i\cdot {\bf S}_{i+1} +α({\bf S}_i\cdot{\bf S}_{i+1})^2\}$) is examined. The gapped Haldane phase has two subphases (the commensurate Haldane subphase and the incommensurate Haldane subphase) and the commensurate-incommensurate change point (the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki point, $α=1/3$). There have been two different analytical predictions about the static structure factor in the neighborhood of this point. By using the Sørensen-Affleck prescription, these static structure f…
Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical progresses of the magnetic properties of iron-based superconductors, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic (BBQ) model on the square lattice. Using variational approach in the mean-field level, we identify the existence of various magnetic phases, including conventional spin dipolar orderings (ferro- or antiferromagnet), novel quadrupolar (spin nematic) orderings and mixed dipolar-quadrupolar orderings. In contrast to the usual Heisenberg model, the elementary excitations of the spin-1 BBQ model are described by …
We have precisely determined the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice using the tensor renormalization group method. We find that the ferromagnetic, ferroquadrupolar, and a large part of the antiferromagnetic phases are stable against quantum fluctuations. However, around the phase where the ground state is antiferroquadrupolar ordered in the classical limit, quantum fluctuations suppress completely all magnetic orders, leading to a plaquette order phase which breaks the lattice symmetry but preserves the spin SU(2) sym…
We investigate a highly frustrated spin-1 model on the triangular lattice, with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic $S\cdot S$ interactions and nearest-neighbor $(S\cdot S)^2$ interactions. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we find three magnetically ordered phases, namely 120$^\circ$ spiral order, stripe order, and tetrahedral order, as well as two spin nematic phases: ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar. While our data could be consistent with a spin liquid phase between the 120$^\circ$ spiral and antiferroquadrupolar orders, the more lik…
We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S=1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, Bethe ansatz and field theoretical considerations. In a large region of the parameter space, we identify a magnetized ferroquadrupolar Luttinger liquid consisting of a quasi-condensate of bound magnon pairs. This liquid undergoes a continuous pair unbinding transition to a more conventional Luttinger liquid region obtained by polarizing the system above the Haldane gap region. This pair unbinding transition is shown to be in th…
The spin 1 bilinear-biquadratic model on square lattice in the region $0<ϕ<π/4$ is studied in a fermion representation with a p-wave pairing BCS type mean-field theory. Our results show there may exist a non-trivial gapped spin liquid with time-reversal symmetry spontaneously breaking. This exotic state manifests its topological nature by forming chiral states at the edges. To show it more clear, we set up and solved a ribbon system. We got a gapless dispersion representing the edge modes beneath the bulk modes. The edge modes with nonzero longitudinal momentum ($k_{x}\neq0$) convect in opposi…
Spin liquid crystals are magnetic analogs of liquid crystals, possessing properties of both liquids and solids, a typical example of which are spin nematics. Spin nematics share many features with spin liquids, and the interplay between them is a promising, but little explored, route to uncovering new phases of matter. Here, we address this question in the context of a spin-$1$ magnet on the honeycomb lattice, by considering a model with both biquadratic interactions, favouring spin-nematic states, and Kitaev-like interactions, supporting spin liquids. Accompanying these, where dipole and quad…
Making use of infinite projected entangled pair states, we investigate the ground state phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In agreement with previous studies, we find the ferromagnetic, 120 degree magnetically ordered, ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar phases, and confirm that all corresponding phase transitions are first order. Moreover, we provide an accurate estimate of the location of the ferroquadrupolar to 120 degree magnetically ordered phase transition, thereby fully establishing the phase diagram. Also,…
Motivated by the recent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements in the iron pnictides which show a strong anisotropy of spin excitations in directions perpendicular and parallel to the ordering wave-vector even above the magnetic transition temperature $T_N$, we study the frustrated Heisenberg model with a biquadratic spin-spin exchange interaction. Using the Dyson-Maleev (DM) representation, which proves appropriate for all temperature regimes, we find that the spin-spin dynamical structure factors are in excellent agreement with experiment, exhibiting breaking of the $C_4$ symmetry e…
We present an extensive numerical study of spin quadrupolar correlations in single and coupled bilinear-biquadratic spin one chains, using several methods such as Exact Diagonalization, Density Matrix Renormalization Group and strong coupling series expansions. For the single chain we clarify the dominant correlation function in the enigmatic gapless period-three phase for theta in (pi/4,pi/2), which is of spin quadrupolar nature with a period three spatial structure. Then we revisit the open problem of the possible existence of a ferroquadrupolar phase between the dimerized and the ferromagne…
Here we investigate the phase diagram of the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic quantum spin chain by studying the global quantum correlations of the ground state. We consider the cases of n=3,4 and 5 and focus on the geometric entanglement in the thermodynamic limit. Apart from capturing all the known phase transitions, our analysis shows a number of novel distinctive behaviors in the phase diagrams which we conjecture to be general and valid for arbitrary n. In particular, we provide an intuitive argument in favor of an infinite entanglement length in the system at a purely-biquadratic point. Our re…
We investigate the ground-state properties of the highly degenerate non-coplanar phase of the classical bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with Monte Carlo simulations. For that purpose, we introduce an Ising pseudospin representation of the ground states, and we use a simple Metropolis algorithm with local updates, as well as a powerful cluster algorithm. At sizes that can be sampled with local updates, the presence of long-range order is surprisingly combined with an algebraic decay of correlations and the complete disordering of the chirality. It is only thanks …
We study thermodynamic properties as well as the dynamical spin and quadrupolar structure factors of the O(3)-symmetric spin-1 Heisenberg model with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interactions on the triangular lattice. Based on a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo approach, we access both the ferromagnetic and the ferroquadrupolar ordered, spin nematic phase as well as the SU(3)-symmetric point which separates these phases. Signatures of Goldstone soft-modes in the dynamical spin and the quadrupolar structure factors are identified, and the properties of the low-energy excitations are compa…
In this paper we study the influence of the single-ion anisotropy in the two-dimensional biquadratic Heisenberg model (ABHM) on the square lattice at zero and finite low temperatures. It is common to represent the bilinear and biquadratic terms by $J_1=J\cosθ$ and $J_2=J\sinθ$, respectively, and it is well documented the many phases present in the model as function of $θ$. However we have adopted a constant value for the bilinear constant ($J_1=1$) and small values of the biquadratic term ($|J_2|<J_1$). In special, we have analyzed the quantum phase transition due to the single-ion anisotropic…
Recent theoretical studies raised the possibility of a realization of spin nematic states in the S=1 triangular lattice compound NiGa_2S_4. We study the bilinear-biquadratic spin 1 chain in a zig-zag geometry by means of the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization. We present the phase diagram focusing on antiferromagnetic interactions. Adjacent to the known Haldane-double Haldane and the extended critical phase with dominant spin nematic correlations we find a trimerized phase with a nonvanishing energy gap. We discuss results for different order parameters, ener…
The magnetic and nematic properties of the iron chalcogenides have recently been the subject of intense interest. Motivated by the proposed antiferroquadrupolar and Ising-nematic orders for the bulk FeSe, we study the phase diagram of an $S=1$ generalized bilinear-biquadratic model with multi-neighbor interactions. We find a large parameter regime for a ($π$,0) antiferroquadrupolar phase, showing how quantum fluctuations stabilize it by lifting an infinite degeneracy of certain semiclassical states. Evidence for this C$_4$-symmetry-breaking quadrupolar phase is also provided by an unbiased den…
Motivated by the properties of the iron chalcogenides, we study the phase diagram of a generalized Heisenberg model with frustrated bilinear-biquadratic interactions on a square lattice. We identify zero-temperature phases with antiferroquadrupolar and Ising-nematic orders. The effects of quantum fluctuations and interlayer couplings are analyzed. We propose the Ising-nematic order as underlying the structural phase transition observed in the normal state of FeSe, and discuss the role of the Goldstone modes of the antiferroquadrupolar order for the dipolar magnetic fluctuations in this system.…
We consider the phase diagram of the most general SU(4)-symmetric two-site Hamiltonian for a system of two fermions per site (ie self-conjugate $\bf 6$ representation) on the square lattice. It is known that this model hosts magnetic phases breaking SU(4) symmetry and quantum disordered dimer-like phases breaking lattice translation symmetry. Motivated by a previous work [O. Gauthé, S. Capponi and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{99}$, 241112(R) (2019)], we investigate the possibility of the existence of SU(4) quantum spin liquid phases in this model, using SU(4)-symmetric Projected Entangl…
Elucidating the nature of spin excitations is important to understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. Motivated by recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the nearly 100% detwinned BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the spin dynamics of an $S=1$ frustrated bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the antiferromagnetic phase with wavevector $(π,0)$. The biquadratic interactions are treated in a dynamical way using a flavor-wave theory in an $SU(3)$ representation. Besides the magnon (dipolar) excitations, the biquadratic interactions give rise to quadrupolar e…
We present a generalized spin-wave theory (GSWT) for treating spin Hamiltonians of arbitrary spin $S$. The generalization consists of an extension of the traditional spin-wave theory from SU(2) to SU($N$). Low energy excitations are waves of the local order parameter that fluctuates in the SU($N$) space of unitary transformations of the local spin states, instead of the SU(2) space of local spin rotations. Since the generators of the SU($N$) group can be represented as bilinear forms in $N$-flavored bosons, the low-energy modes of the GSWT are described with $N-1$ different bosons. The general…
We study the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with additional positive biquadratic interaction in the semiclassical limit. The classical ground state manifold of the model contains an extensively large family of non-coplanar spin states known as "color ice states". Starting from a color ice state, a subset of spins may rotate collectively at no energy cost. Such excitation may be viewed in this three-dimensional system as a "membrane-like" analog of the well-known weathervane modes in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We investigate the weathervane modes in detail and eluci…
We study numerically the magnetic properties (magnetization and magnetoresistance) of ultra-thin magnetic films (Fe/Cr) grown following the Fibonacci sequence. We use a phenomenological model which includes Zeeman, cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic exchange energies. Our physical parameters are based on experimental data recently reported, which contain biquadratic exchange coupling with magnitude comparable to the bilinear exchange coupling. When biquadratic exchange coupling is sufficiently large a striking self-similar pattern emerges.
We present a low-energy effective field theory to describe the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic spin chain. We start with n=6 and construct the effective theory by using six Majorana fermions. After determining various correlation functions we characterize the phases and establish the relation between the effective theories for SO(6) and SO(5). Together with the known results for n=3 and 4, a reduction mechanism is proposed to understand the ground state for arbitrary SO(n). Also, we provide a generalization of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for SO(n). The implications of our results for entangleme…
Noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic textures including skyrmions and vortices act as emergent electromagnetic fields and give rise to novel electronic and transport properties. We here report a unified understanding of noncoplanar magnetic orderings emergent from the spin-charge coupling in itinerant magnets. The mechanism has its roots in effective multiple spin interactions beyond the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) mechanism, which are ubiquitously generated in itinerant electron systems with local magnetic moments. Carefully examining the higher-order perturbations in t…
In the literature, it is known that near the Takhtajan-Babujain point of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-$1$ chain, the low energy theory is captured by three Majorana fermions with a mass sign change, or three Ising chains near the transition. In this paper, we study how the spin-$1$, the Ising spins, and the fermions are related at lattice scale. We construct the spin-$1$ operator out from the Ising spins and fermions, showing that when the Ising chains are in the ordered phase, the spin-$1$ chain is in the dimer phase, and when the Ising chains are in the paramagnetic phase, the spin-$1$ chai…
We study the magnetic excitation spectrum of the S=1 quantum Heisenberg spin chain with Hamiltonian : H = sum_i cos(theta) S_i S_i+1 + sin(theta) (S_i S_i+1)^2. We focus on the range -pi/4 < theta < +pi/4 where the spin chain is in the gapped Haldane phase. The excitation spectrum and static structure factor is studied using direct Lanczos diagonalization of small systems and density-matrix renormalization group techniques combined with the single-mode approximation. The magnon dispersion has a minimum at q=pi until a critical value theta_c = 0.38 is reached at which the curvature (velocity) v…
The Haldane phase is the prototype of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of spin chain systems. It can be protected by several symmetries having in common the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. Here we explore in depth this degeneracy for the spin-1 AKLT and bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonians and show the emergence of a bulk-edge correspondence that relates the low energy properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian of a periodic chain and that of the physical Hamiltonian of an open chain. We find that the entanglement spectrum can be described in terms of two spins-1/2 behaving as…
We investigate the effect of spin-lattice coupling (SLC) on the magnetic properties of the classical kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) using improved Monte Carlo updates. The lattice modes are represented by Einstein site phonons, which introduce effective further-neighbor spin interactions in addition to the nearest-neighbor biquadratic interactions. In the weak SLC, the macroscopically degenerate coplanar ground state remains at zero field, while a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ ordered phase accompanied by a 1/3-magnetization plateau appears in external magnetic fields. In the st…
We investigate the influence of biquadratic exchange interactions on the low-lying excitations of a S=1/2-ladder using perturbation theory, numerical diagonalization of finite systems and exact results for ladders with matrix product ground states. We consider in particular the combination of biquadratic exchange interactions corresponding to ring exchange on the basic ladder plaquette. We find that a moderate amount of ring exchange reduces the spin gap substantially and makes equal bilinear exchange on legs and rungs consistent with experimentally observed spectra.

In this work, we study a biquadratic Heisenberg model with coupled orbital degree of freedom using Monte Carlo simulation in order to investigate the phase transitions in iron-based superconductors. The antiferro-quadrupolar state, which may be related to the magnetism of FeSe [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116401 (2015)], is stabilized by the anisotropic biquadratic interaction induced by a ferro-orbital-ordered state. It is revealed that the orbital and nematic transitions occur at the same temperature for all the cases, supporting the mechanism of the orbital-driven nematicity as revealed in most r…
Motivated by the magnetically-driven high-temperature ferroelectric behavior of CuO and the subsequent theoretical efforts to understand this intriguing phenomenon, we study a spin model on a two-dimensional square lattice which possesses some of the key features of the models proposed for CuO. The model consists of Heisenberg couplings between nearest and next-nearest neighbor spins, and biquadratic couplings between nearest neighbors. We use a combination of variational calculations and classical Monte Carlo simulations to study this model at zero and finite temperatures. We show that even a…
We study the phase diagram of the $SO_q(3)$ quantum group invariant spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic spin chain for real values of $q>1$. Numerical computations suggest that the chain has at least three clearly distinguished phases: A chiral analogue of the Haldane phase, a dimerized phase and a ferromagnetic phase. In contrast, the counterpart of the extended critical region that is known to exist for $q=1$ remains elusive. Our results show that the Haldane phase fails to exhibit a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum but that the degeneracy is restored upon a suitable $q$-deformation …
Two recent publications report different boundaries for the dimerized phase of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 Heisenberg model with quadratic Zeeman effect. We address these discrepancies for the biquadratic model with quadratic Zeeman term and explain the differences. Based on our numerical results the phase boundaries of the dimerized phase are determined.
Response functions $\langle A_x(t) B_y(0)\rangle$ for one-dimensional strongly correlated quantum many-body systems can be computed with matrix product state (MPS) techniques. Especially, when one is interested in spectral functions or dynamic structure factors of translation-invariant systems, the response for some range $|x-y|<\ell$ is needed. We demonstrate how the number of required time-evolution runs can be reduced substantially: (a) If finite-system simulations are employed, the number of time-evolution runs can be reduced from $\ell$ to $2\sqrt{\ell}$. (b) To go beyond, one can employ …
We study $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional spin systems with $Z_3 \times Z_3$ symmetry. We construct ground-state wave functions of the matrix product form for nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ phases and their parent Hamiltonian from a cocycle of the group cohomology $H^2(Z_3\times Z_3,U(1))$. The Hamiltonian is an SU(3) version of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, consisting of bilinear and biquadratic terms of su(3) generators in the adjoint representation. A generalization to the SU($N$) case, the SU($N$) AKLT Hamiltonian, is also presented w…
Since its discovery, iron-based superconductivity has been known to develop near an antiferromagnetic order, but this paradigm fails in the iron chalcogenide FeSe, whose single-layer version holds the record for the highest superconducting transition temperature in the iron-based superconductors. The striking puzzle that FeSe displays nematic order (spontaneously broken lattice rotational symmetry) while being non-magnetic, has led to several competing proposals for its origin in terms of either the $3d$-electron's orbital degrees of freedom or spin physics in the form of frustrated magnetism.…
Motivated by the widespread experimental observations of nematicity in strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors, we investigate the possibility of enhanced nematic fluctuations in the vicinity of a Mott insulator that displays Néel-type antiferromagnetic order. By performing a strong-coupling expansion of an effective model that contains both Cu-$d$ and O-$p$ orbitals on the square lattice, we demonstrate that quadrupolar fluctuations in the $p$-orbitals inevitably generate a biquadratic coupling between the spins of the $d$-orbitals. The key point revealed by our classical Monte Carlo simu…
