In this paper we show existence and uniqueness of a solution for a system of m variational partial differential inequalities with inter-connected obstacles. This system is the deterministic version of the Verification Theorem of the Markovian optimal m-states switching problem. The switching cost functions are arbitrary. This problem is in relation with the valuation of firms in a financial market.
This paper investigates a singular stochastic control problem for a multi-dimensional regime-switching diffusion process confined in an unbounded domain. The objective is to maximize the total expected discounted rewards from exerting the singular control. Such a formulation stems from application areas such as optimal harvesting multiple species and optimal dividends payments schemes in random environments. With the aid of weak dynamic programming principle and an exponential transformation, we characterize the value function to be the unique constrained viscosity solution of a certain system…
In this paper we study the optimal m-states switching problem in finite horizon as well as infinite horizon with risk of default. We allow the switching cost functionals and cost of default to be of polynomial growth and arbitrary. We show uniqueness of a solution for a system of m variational partial differential inequalities with inter-connected obstacles. This system is the deterministic version of the Verification Theorem of the Markovian optimal m-states switching problem with risk of default. This problem is connected with the valuation of a power plant in the energy market.
In this paper, we study the $m$-states optimal switching problem in finite horizon, when the switching cost functions are arbitrary and can be positive or negative. This has an economic incentive in terms of central evaluation in cases where such organizations or state grants or financial assistance to power plants that promotes green energy in their production activity or what uses less polluting modes in their production. We show existence for optimal strategy via a verification theorem then we show existence and uniqueness of the value processes by using an approximation scheme. In the mark…
We consider a robust switching control problem. The controller only observes the evolution of the state process, and thus uses feedback (closed-loop) switching strategies, a non standard class of switching controls introduced in this paper. The adverse player (nature) chooses open-loop controls that represent the so-called Knightian uncertainty, i.e., misspecifications of the model. The (half) game switcher versus nature is then formulated as a two-step (robust) optimization problem. We develop the stochastic Perron method in this framework, and prove that it produces a viscosity sub and super…
This paper studies a discrete-time optimal switching problem on a finite horizon. The underlying model has a running reward, terminal reward and signed (positive and negative) switching costs. Using the martingale approach to optimal stopping problems, we extend a well known explicit dynamic programming method for computing the value function and the optimal strategy to the case of signed switching costs.
We consider stochastic impulse control problems when the impulses cost functions are arbitrary. We use the dynamic programming principle and viscosity solutions approach to show that the value function is a unique viscosity solution for the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation (HJB) partial differential equation (PDE) of stochastic impulse control problems
In this paper we study continuous-time two-player zero-sum optimal switching games on a finite horizon. Using the theory of doubly reflected BSDEs with interconnected barriers, we show that this game has a value and an equilibrium in the players' switching controls.
This paper is concerned with optimal switching over multiple modes in continuous time and on a finite horizon. The performance index includes a running reward, terminal reward and switching costs that can belong to a large class of stochastic processes. Particularly, the switching costs are modelled by right-continuous with left-limits processes that are quasi-left-continuous and can take both positive and negative values. We provide sufficient conditions leading to a well known probabilistic representation of the value function for the switching problem in terms of interconnected Snell envelo…
This paper uses recent results on continuous-time finite-horizon optimal switching problems with negative switching costs to prove the existence of a saddle point in an optimal stopping (Dynkin) game. Sufficient conditions for the game's value to be continuous with respect to the time horizon are obtained using recent results on norm estimates for doubly reflected backward stochastic differential equations. This theory is then demonstrated numerically for the special cases of cancellable call and put options in a Black-Scholes market.
This paper studies a system of multi-dimensional reflected backward stochastic differential equations with oblique reflections (RBSDEs for short) in infinite horizon associated to switching problems. The existence and uniqueness of the adapted solution is obtained by using a method based oa combination of penalization, verification method and contraction property.
In this paper we study a class of infinite horizon fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), that are stimulated by various continuous time future expectations models with random coefficients. Under standard Lipschitz and monotonicity conditions, and by means of the contraction mapping principle, we establish existence, uniqueness, a comparison property and dependence on a parameter of adapted solutions. Making further the connection with infinite horizon quasilinear backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs) via a generalization of the well kn…
We address the problem of making a managerial decision when the investment project is subsidized, which results in the resolution of an infinite-horizon optimal stopping problem of a switching diffusion driven by either an homogeneous or an inhomogeneous continuous-time Markov chain. We provide a characterization of the value function (and optimal strategy) of the optimal stopping problem. On the one hand, broadly, we can prove that the value function is the unique viscosity solution to a system of HJB equations. On the other hand, when the Markov chain is homogeneous and the switching diffusi…
This paper studies a system of $m$ variational inequalities with interconnected obstacles in infinite horizon associated to optimal multi-modes switching problems. Our main result is the existence and uniqueness of a continuous solution in viscosity sense, for that system. The proof of the main result strongly relies on the connection between the systems of variational inequalities and reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDEs) with oblique reflection, which will be characterized through a Feynman-Kac's formula. The main feature of our system of infinite horizon RBSDEs is th…
In this paper we aim to find the stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of a parabolic type SPDEs through the infinite horizon backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs). For this, we study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of the corresponding infinite horizon BDSDEs as well as the "perfection procedure" applied to the solutions of BDSDEs. At last the "perfect" stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of SPDEs constructed by solutions of corresponding BDSDEs are obtained.
We study an optimal switching problem with a state constraint: the controller is only allowed to choose strategies that keep the controlled diffusion in a closed domain. We prove that the value function associated with this problem is the limit of value functions associated with unconstrained switching problems with penalized coefficients, as the penalization parameter goes to infinity. This convergence allows to set a dynamic programming principle for the constrained switching problem. We then prove that the value function is a solution to a system of variational inequalities (SVI for short) …
We consider a jump-diffusion mean field control problem with regime switching in the state dynamics. The corresponding value function is characterized as the unique viscosity solution of a HJB master equation on the space of probability measures. Using this characterization, we prove that the value function, which is not regular, is the limit of a finite agent centralized optimal control problem as the number of agents go to infinity, with an explicit convergence rate. Assuming in addition that the value function is smooth, we establish a quantitative propagation of chaos result for the optima…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of pathwise strong solutions to the stochastic 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity and diffusivity driven by transport noise on a cylindrical domain $M=(-h,0) \times G$, $G\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ bounded and smooth, with the physical Dirichlet boundary conditions on the lateral part of the boundary. Compared to the deterministic case where the uniqueness of $z$-weak solutions holds in $L^2$, more regular initial data are necessary to establish uniqueness in the anisotropic space $H^1_z L^2_{xy}$ so that the existence of local pathwise s…
The paper studies a class of multidimensional optimal stopping problems with infinite horizon for linear switching diffusions. There are two main novelties in the optimal problems considered: the underlying stochastic process has discontinuous paths and the cost function is not necessarily integrable on the entire time horizon, where the latter is often a key assumption in classical optimal stopping theory for diffusions, cf. [22, Corollary 2.9]. Under relatively mild conditions, we show, for the class of multidimensional optimal stopping problems under consideration, that the first entry time…
This paper introduces a new class of optimal switching problems, where the player is allowed to switch at a sequence of exogenous Poisson arrival times, and the underlying switching system is governed by an infinite horizon backward stochastic differential equation system. The value function and the optimal switching strategy are characterized by the solution of the underlying switching system. In a Markovian setting, the paper gives a complete description of the structure of switching regions by means of the comparison principle.
This paper is concerned with cost optimization of an insurance company. The surplus of the insurance company is modeled by a controlled regime switching diffusion, where the regime switching mechanism provides the fluctuations of the random environment. The goal is to find an optimal control that minimizes the total cost up to a stochastic exit time. A weaker sufficient condition than that of (Fleming and Soner 2006, Section V.2) for the continuity of the value function is obtained. Further, the value function is shown to be a viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobian-Bellman equation.
The present paper considers a stochastic optimal control problem, in which the cost function is defined through a backward stochastic differential equation with infinite horizon driven by G-Brownian motion. Then we study the regularities of the value function and establish the dynamic programming principle. Moreover, we prove that the value function is the uniqueness viscosity solution of the related HJBI equation.
In this paper, we study systems of nonlinear second-order variational inequalities with interconnected bilateral obstacles with non-local terms. They are of min-max and max-min types and related to a multiple modes zero-sum switching game in the jump-diffusion model. Using systems of penalized reflected backward SDEs with jumps and unilateral interconnected obstacles, and their associated deterministic functions, we construct for each system a continuous viscosity solution which is unique in the class of functions with polynomial growth.
In this paper we show existence and uniqueness of the solution in viscosity sense for a system of nonlinear $m$ variational integral-partial differential equations with interconnected obstacles whose coefficients $(f_i)_{i=1,\cdots, m}$ depend on $(u_j)_{j=1,\cdots,m}$. From the probabilistic point of view, this system is related to optimal stochastic switching problem when the noise is driven by a Lévy process. The switching costs depend on $(t,x)$. As a by-product of the main result we obtain that the value function of the switching problem is continuous and unique solution of its associated…
The stochastic logistic model with regime switching is an important model in the ecosystem. While analytic solution to this model is positive, current numerical methods are unable to preserve such boundaries in the approximation. So, proposing appropriate numerical method for solving this model which preserves positivity and dynamical behaviors of the model's solution is very important. In this paper, we present a positivity preserving truncated Euler-Maruyama scheme for this model, which taking advantages of being explicit and easily implementable. Without additional restriction conditions, s…
We study the problem of utility maximization from terminal wealth in which an agent optimally builds her portfolio by investing in a bond and a risky asset. The asset price dynamics follow a diffusion process with regime-switching coefficients modeled by a continuous-time finite-state Markov chain. We consider an investor with a Constant Relative Risk Aversion (CRRA) utility function. We deduce the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation to construct the solution and the optimal trading strategy and verify optimality by showing that the value function is the unique constrained viscosity so…
We solve non-Markovian optimal switching problems in discrete time on an infinite horizon, when the decision maker is risk aware and the filtration is general, and establish existence and uniqueness of solutions for the associated reflected backward stochastic difference equations. An example application to hydropower planning is provided.
In this paper, we deal with the solutions of systems of PDEs with bilateral inter-connected obstacles of min-max and max-min types. These systems arise naturally in stochastic switching zero-sum game problems. We show that when the switching costs of one side are regular, the solutions of the min-max and max-min systems coincide. Then, this common viscosity solution is related to a multi-dimensional doubly reflected BSDE with bilateral interconnected obstacles. Finally, its relationship with the the values of a zero-sum switching game is studied.
