Based on an effective two-band model and using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach, we explore spin fluctuations and unconventional superconducting pairing in Fe-based layer superconductors. It is elaborated that one type of interband antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuation stems from the interband Coulomb repulsion, while the other type of intraband AF spin fluctuation originates from the intraband Coulomb repulsion. Due to the Fermi-surface topology, a spin-singlet extended s-wave superconducting state is more favorable than the nodal $d_{XY}$-wave state if the interband AF spin fluctuation is more significant than the intraband one, otherwise vice versa. It is also revealed that the effective interband coupling plays an important role in the intraband pairings, which is a distinct feature of the present two-band system.
We analyze in detail the superconductivity that arises in an extended Hubbard model describing a multiband system with repulsive interactions. We show that virtual interband processes induce an effective attractive interaction for small momentum transfers, a situation not found in most models of superconductivity from repulsion. This attraction can be traced back, in real space, to the presence of correlated hopping terms induced by interband polarization. We reveal this physics with both strong-coupling expansion and many-body perturbation theory, supplemented by numerical calculations. Final…
Recent experiments have shown rotation of the plane of polarization of light reflected from the surface of some superconductors. This indicates that time reversal and certain mirror symmetries are broken in the ordered phase. The photon energy exceeds the electronic bandwidth, so that completely filled or completely empty bands must play a role. We show that in strong-coupling theory a Coulomb interaction may produce an order parameter in the unoccupied band that explains the observations. The theory puts tight constraints on the form of the order parameter in different bands. We propose that …
Recent measurements of Fermi surface with de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in LaFePO showed a shrinking of the Fermi pockets with respect to first-principle LDA calculations, suggesting an energy shift of the hole and electrons bands with respect to LDA. We show that these shifts are a natural consequence of the strong particle-hole asymmetry of electronic bands in pnictides, and that they provide an indirect experimental evidence of a dominant interband scattering in these systems.
We study a four-band model for the iron oxypnictides, in which the superconducting properties are assumed to be determined by the interband coupling between hole-like and electron-like Fermi sheets. We show that reasonable parameters can account for the angle-resolved photoemission spectra showing multiple gaps in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, and for the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. At the same time, the zero-temperature value of the superfluid density shows a conventional scaling with the number of carriers.
We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the…
Nine years ago, superconductors based on the magnetic element iron were discovered. A flurry of research activity has revealed an unprecedented diversity of chemical structures and physical properties. Similarly to other unconventional superconductors, stripe-type antiferromagnetism seems to play an important role. Particularly interesting is its strong coupling to the crystal lattice. The systematic comparison of different compounds may allow to identify key elements in the mechanism of superconductivity and provide guidelines for the search for new and better superconductors.
Following the discovery of superconductivity in epsilon-iron, subsequent experiments hinted at non-Fermi liquid behaviour of the normal phase and sensitive dependence of the superconducting state on disorder, both signatures of unconventional pairing. We report further resistive measurements under pressure of samples of iron from multiple sources. The normal state resistivity of epsilon-iron varied as rho_0+AT^{5/3} at low temperature over the entire superconducting pressure domain. The superconductivity could be destroyed by mechanical work, and was restored by annealing, demonstrating sensit…
For the iron-based high $T_c$ superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, we construct a minimal model, where all of the five Fe $d$ bands turn out to be involved. We then investigate the origin of superconductivity with a five-band random-phase approximation by solving the Eliashberg equation. We conclude that the spin fluctuation modes arising from the nesting between the disconnected Fermi pockets realise, basically, an extended s-wave pairing, where the gap changes sign across the nesting vector.
Contrary to the usual assumption, the electron Bloch states in crystals with spin-orbit coupling do not always transform under symmetry operations in the same way as the pure spin-1/2 states. This has profound consequences for the symmetry properties and nodal structure of superconductors, especially for the interband gap functions. Focusing on tetragonal superconductors, we show that the interband pairing in the conventional (s-wave) channel can have features which are traditionally associated with unconventional pairing, such as triplet components and odd parity, and can produce line nodes i…
The Raman response in a superconductor is a powerful probe to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting gap. Here we show that in a multiband superconductor it also offers the unique opportunity to establish if the driving pairing interaction has an intraband or interband character. In the model with one hole and one electron band the full gauge-invariant Raman response, obtained by accounting for the fluctuations of both the density and superconducting phase degrees of freedom, is always dominated by the Leggett mode, regardless its nature. However, while in the case of intra-band domin…
We consider superconductivity in the presence of impurities in a two-band model suited for the description of iron-based superconductors. We analyze the effect of interband scattering processes on superconductivity, allowing for orbital, i.e., nonspin-magnetic but time-reversal symmetry-breaking impurities. Pair breaking in such systems is described by a nontrivial phase in an interband-scattering matrix element. We find that the transition temperature of conventional superconductors can be suppressed due to interband scattering, whereas unconventional superconductors may be unaffected. We als…
We report 75As-NMR/NQR results on new iron-arsenide compounds (La0.5-xNa0.5+x)Fe2As2. The parent compound x=0 exhibits a stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below T_N=130 K. The measurement of nuclear spin relaxation rate at hole-doped x=+0.3 and heavily electron-doped x=-0.5 revealed that the normal-state properties are dominated by AFM spin fluctuations (AFMSFs), which are more significant at x=+0.3 than at x=-0.5. Their superconducting (SC) phases are characterized by unconventional multi-gap SC state, where the smaller SC gaps are particularly weaken in common. The experimental resul…
Based on experimental data on the newly synthesized iron-based superconductors and the relevant band structure calculations, we propose a minimal two-band BCS-type Hamiltonian with the interband Hubbard interaction included. We illustrate that this two-band model is able to capture the essential features of unconventional superconductivity and spin density wave (SDW) ordering in this family of materials. It is found that bound electron-hole pairs can be condensed to reveal the SDW ordering for zero and very small doping, while the superconducting ordering emerges at small finite doping, whose …
The iron-based LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ recently discovered by Hosono's group is a fresh theoretical challenge as a new class of high-temperature superconductors. Here we describe the electronic structure of the material and the mechanism of superconductivity. We start with constructing a tight-binding model in terms of the maximally localized Wannier orbitals from a first-principles electronic structure calculation, which has turned out to involve all the five Fe 3d bands. This is used to calculate the spin and charge susceptibilities with the random phase approximation. The spin susceptibility h…
Multiband superconductors have a sufficient number of degrees of freedom to allow topological excitations characterized by Skyrmionic topological invariants. In the most common, clean s-wave multiband, systems the interband magnetic coupling favours composite vortex solutions, without a Skyrmionic topological charge. It was discussed recently that certain kinds of anisotropies lead to hybridisation of the interband phase difference (Leggett) mode with magnetic modes, dramatically changing the hydromagnetostatics of the system. Here we report this effect for a range of parameters that substanti…
Nb doped SrTiO3, the first discovered two-gap superconductor, is shown to be the most unconventional one of the known multiband superconductors, since the smaller of the two superconducting gaps follows a non BCS temperature dependence. Such a behavior stems from two cooperating effects: an extreme anisotropy in the frequency dependent interactions, involving one very soft mode and an almost vanishing interband interaction. In contrast to all other multiband superconductors, the temperature dependence of the superfluid density of Nb doped SrTiO3 is predicted to exhibit an inflection point clos…
We use magnetic long range order as a tool to probe the Cooper pair wave function in the iron arsenide superconductors. We show theoretically that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity can coexist in these materials only if Cooper pairs form an unconventional, sign-changing state. The observation of coexistence in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ then demonstrates unconventional pairing in this material. The detailed agreement between theory and neutron diffraction experiments, in particular for the unusual behavior of the magnetic order below $T_{c}$, demonstrates the robustness of our…
Study of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials was initiated in 2006 by Hosono's group, and boosted in 2008 by the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 26 K in LaFeAsO1-xFx. Since then, enormous researches have been done on the materials, with Tc reaching as high as 55 K. Here, we review briefly experimental and theoretical results on atomic and electronic structures and magnetic and superconducting properties of FeAs-based superconductors and related compounds. We seek for clues for unconventional superconductivity in the materials.
Heat capacity measurements were performed on recently discovered iron based layered superconductors, non doped LaFePO and fluorine doped LaFePO. A relatively large electronic heat capacity coefficient and a small normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 3.3 K were observed in LaFePO. LaFePO0.94F0.06 had a smaller electronic heat capacity coefficient and a larger normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 5.8 K. These values indicate that these compounds have strong electron electron correlation and magnetic spin fluctuation, which are the signatures of unconventional superconductivity mediated by spin…
We propose a trilayer $π$-junction that takes advantage of the unconventional $s_{x^2 y^2}=\cos k_x \cos k_y$ pairing symmetry which changes sign between electron and hole Fermi pockets in the iron pnictides. In addition, we also present theoretical results for Andreev bound states in thin superconductor-normal metal (or insulator) iron-pnictide junctions. The presence of nontrivial in-gap states, which uniquely appear in this unconventional pairing state, is a distinct feature in comparison to other singlet pairing states.
The newly discovered iron pnictide superconductors apparently present an unusual case of interband-channel pairing superconductivity. Here we show that, in the limit where the pairing occurs within the interband channel, several surprising effects occur quite naturally and generally: different density-of-states on the two bands lead to several unusual properties, including a gap ratio which behaves inversely to the ratio of density-of-states; the weak-coupling limit of the Eliashberg and the BCS theory, commonly taken as equivalent, in fact predict qualitatively different dependence of the $Δ_…
We report 75As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on (Ca_4Al_2O_{6-y})(Fe_2As_2) with Tc=27K, which unravel unique normal-state properties and point to unconventional nodeless superconductivity (SC). Measurement of nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T_1 has revealed a significant development of two dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations down to Tc, in association with the fact that FeAs layers with the smallest As-Fe-As bond angle are well separated by thick perovskite-type blocking layer. Below Tc, the temperature dependence of 1/T_1 without any trace of the coherence …
Iron-base superconductors exhibits features of systems where the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum of Cooper pairs, is actively sought. Experimental and theoretical evidence points strongly to the FFLO phase in these materials above the Pauli limit. In this article we discuss the ground state of iron-base superconductors near the critical magnetic field and the full $h-T$ phase diagram for pnictides in case of intra-band pairing, in a three-band model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry.
The importance of electron-hole interband interactions is widely acknowledged for iron-pnictide superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tc). However, high-Tc superconductivity without hole carriers has been suggested in FeSe single-layer films and intercalated iron-selenides, raising a fundamental question whether iron pnictides and chalcogenides have different pairing mechanisms. Here, we study the properties of electronic structure in the high-Tc phase induced by pressure in bulk FeSe from magneto-transport measurements and first-principles calculations. With increasing pressure, …
Since the discovery of superconductivity in LaFePO in 2006, numerous iron-based superconductors have been identified within diverse structure families, all of which combine iron with a group-V (pnictogen) or group-VI (chalco- gen) element. Unconventional superconductivity is extremely rare among transition metal compounds outside these layered iron systems and the cuprates, and it is almost universally associated with highly anisotropic electronic properties and nearly 2D Fermi surface geometries. The iron-based intermetallic YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ features a 3D Fermi surface and a strongly enhanced lo…
We have investigated the effect of unconventional pairing mechanism in MgB2 using a two-band model within the framework of Bogoliubov-Valatin formalism. The approach incorporates the intra- band s-wave interaction in the s- and p-bands, as well as interband s-wave interaction between them. The analysis assumes the pairing interaction matrix comprises of attractive electron-phonon, charge fluctuation and repulsive electron-electron (Coulomb) interactions to account for superconductivity in MgB2. The model is used to estimate the transition temperature and isotope effect exponent as well as to e…
The sign-reversing fully gapped superconducting state, which is expected to be realized in oxypnictide superconductors, can be prominently affected by nonmagnetic impurities due to the interband scattering of Cooper pairs. We study this problem based on the isotropic two-band BCS model: In oxypnictide superconductors, the interband impurity scattering $I'$ is not equal to the intraband one $I$. In the Born scattering regime, the reduction in Tc is sizable and the impurity-induced density of states (DOS) is prominent if $I\sim I'$, due to the interband scattering. Although impurity-induced DOS …
We present a theoretical description of the differential conductance of point contacts between a normal metal and a multi-band superconductor with extended s\pm pairing symmetry. We demonstrate that the interband impurity scattering broadens the coherent peak near the superconducting gap and significantly reduces its height even at relatively low scattering rates. This broadening is consistent with a number of recent experiments performed for both tunnel junctions and larger diffusive contacts. Our theory helps to better evaluate the energy gap of iron-based superconductors from point contact …
We report the results of $^{77}$Se--nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in $α$-FeSe, which exhibits a similar crystal structure to the LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductor and shows superconductivity at 8 K. The nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows $T^3$ behavior below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ without a coherence peak. The $T_1T=$ const. behavior, indicative of the Fermi liquid state, can be seen in a wide temperature range above $T_c$. The superconductivity in $α$-FeSe is also an unconventional one as well as LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and related materials. The Fe…
We suggest that an inhomogeneous (non-zero momentum) paired phase can appear in the absence of an external magnetic field in the system with a predominant interband pairing and with separate Fermi-surface sheets. The Fermi wave vector mismatch which appears in such situation can be compensated by nonzero center-of-mass momentum of the Cooper pairs, what can lead to a spontaneous appearance of the Fulde-Ferrell type of superconducting state. The idea is examined using a tight-binding model which emulates the hole-like and the electron-like bands of iron based superconductor. The state can appea…
An important challenge in condensed matter physics is understanding iron-based superconductors. Among these systems, the iron selenides hold the record for highest superconducting transition temperature and pose especially striking puzzles regarding the nature of superconductivity. The pairing state of the alkaline iron selenides appears to be of $d$-wave type based on the observation of a resonance mode in neutron scattering, while it seems to be of $s$-wave type from the nodeless gaps observed everywhere on the Fermi surface (FS). Here we propose an orbital-selective pairing state, dubbed $s…
We investigate pairing mechanism in multiband superconductors. To put our feet on firm ground, unbiased renormalization group analysis is carried out for iron-based superconductors. It is quite remarkable that, after integrating out quantum fluctuations, the renormalization-group flows agree exceedingly well with a mean-field Hamiltonian where interband pair hopping plays an essential role. Through interband pair hopping, electrons can overcome the repulsive interaction between them and form resonating Cooper pairs between different bands. Unlike the conventional superconductors, the pairing m…
We report self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry for the iron-based high-temperature superconductors using realistic small-q phonon mediated pairing potentials and four-band energy dispersions. When both electron and hole Fermi surface pockets are present, we obtain the nodeless $s_\pm$ state that was first encountered in a spin-fluctuations mechanism picture. Nodal gap structures such as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $s_\pm+d_{x^2-y^2}$ and even a p-wave triplet state, are accessible upon doping within our phononic mechanism. Our results resolve the conflict between phase sensitive experiments …
Superconductivity is a remarkably widespread phenomenon observed in most metals cooled down to very low temperatures. The ubiquity of such conventional superconductors, and the wide range of associated critical temperatures, is readily understood in terms of the celebrated Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Occasionally, however, unconventional superconductors are found, such as the iron-based materials, which extend and defy this understanding in new and unexpected ways. In the case of the iron-based superconductors, this includes a new appreciation of the ways in which the presence of m…
This work presents 75As NMR spin echo decay rate (1/T2) measurements in Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 superconductors, for 0.041 < x < 0.094. It is shown that 1/T2 increases upon cooling, in the normal phase, suggesting the onset of an unconventional very low-frequency activated dynamic. The correlation times of the fluctuations and their energy barriers are derived. The motion is favored at large Rh content, while it is hindered by the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the FeAs layers. The same dynamic is observed in the spin-lattice relaxation rate, in a quantitatively consistent manner. T…
To reveal the relative importance of charge doping and defect scattering in substitutionally modified 122 iron pnictides, we perform a systematic first principles study on selected bands at the Fermi level. Disorder effects are induced by various substitutions using an orbital based coherent potential approximation (CPA). Pronounced level shifts of individual bands suggest that transition metal substitutions introduce mobile charge carriers into the system. However, important deviations from such a rigid band scenario as well as spectral broadenings due to impurity scattering correlate with th…
High pressure electrical resistivity and x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on Fe single crystals. The crystallographic investigation provides direct evidence that in the martensitic $bcc \rightarrow hcp$ transition at 14 GPa the $\lbrace 110\rbrace_{bcc}$ become the $\lbrace 002\rbrace_{hcp}$ directions. During a pressure cycle, resistivity shows a broad hysteresis of 6.5 GPa, whereas superconductivity, observed between 13 and 31 GPa, remains unaffected. Upon increasing pressure an electronic instability, probably a quantum critical point, is observed at around 19 GPa and, clos…
Based on an effective 12-orbital tight-binding model, we examine the superconducting states induced by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations for iron-vacancy-ordered A$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_{2}$. It is shown that due to the broken reflection symmetry induced by the iron vacancies, new superconducting states with $C_{4h}$ symmetry emerge. In particular, we show that in the $C_{4h}$ symmetry, symmetric axes of the pairing momenta do not need to coincide with axes of the unit cell. As a result, in addition to the magnitude of the pairing gap, the relative orientation of the pairing wave function to the…
The origin of Cooper pairing in high-temperature superconductors, such as the copper-oxide and iron-based system, is still under debate. High transition temperatures together with unconventional pairing states support the picture of an electronic pairing glue in the cuprates, where superconductivity is mediated by collective bosonic excitations of the electron fluid. In other materials, most importantly iron based systems with only hole or only electron pockets, the microscopic origin is hotly debated. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been shown to be a powerful experimental probe to de…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K). We reveal multiple nodeless superconducting (SC) gaps with 2D/kBTc ratios varying from 2.8 to 6.4, depending on the Fermi surface (FS). We also succeeded in directly observing a gap anisotropy along the FS with magnitude up to ~30 %. The anisotropy is four-fold symmetric with an antiphase between the hole and electron FSs, suggesting complex anisotropic interactions for the SC pairing. The observed momentum dependence of the SC gap offers an excellent opportunity to invest…
There are several FeSe based superconductors, including the bulk FeSe, monolayer FeSe thin film, intercalated KxFe2-ySe2 and Li1-xFexOHFeSe, etc. Their normal states all show metallic behavior. The key player here is the FeSe layer which exhibits the highest superconducting transition temperature in the form of monolayer thin film. Recently a new FeSe based compound, CsFe4-xSe4 with the space group of Bmmm was found. Interestingly the system shows a strong insulator-like behavior although it shares the same FeSe planes as other relatives. Density functional theory calculations indicate that it…
Specific heat measurements have been successfully used to probe unconventional superconducting phases in one-band heavy-fermion and organic superconductors. We extend the method to study successive phase transitions in multi-band materials such as iron based superconductors. The signatures are multiple peaks in the specific heat, at low temperatures and high magnetic field, which can lead the experimental verification of unconventional superconducting states with non-zero total momentum.
We studied the doping and temperature (T) dependence of the infrared (IR) response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals. We show that a weak band around 1000 cm-1, that was previously interpreted in terms of interaction of the charge carriers with magnetic excitations or of a pseudogap, is rather related to low-energy interband transitions. Specifically, we show that this band exhibits a similar doping and T-dependence as the hole pockets seen by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Notably, we find that it vanishes as a function of doping near the critical point where superconduc…
In the framework of four-band model of superconductivity in iron arsenides proposed by Barzykin and Gor'kov we analyze the gap ratios on hole - like and electron - like Fermi - surface cylinders. It is shown that experimentally observed (ARPES) gap ratios can be obtained only within rather strict limits on the values of pairing coupling constants. The difference of T_c values in 1111 and 122 systems is reasonably explained by the relative values of partial densities of states. The multiple bands electronic structure of these systems leads to a significant enhancement of effective pairing coupl…
The experimental critical temperatures and gap values of the superconducting pnictides of both the 1111 and 122 families can be simultaneously reproduced within the Eliashberg theory by using a three-band model where the dominant role is played by interband interactions and the order parameter undergoes a sigh reversal between hole and electron bands (s+- wave symmetry). High values of the electron-boson coupling constants and small typical boson energies (in agreement with experiments) are necessary to obtain the values of all the gaps and to correctly reproduce their temperature dependence.
We study the effect of disorder on the London penetration depth in iron-based superconductors. The theory is based on a two-band model with quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, which allows for the coexistence region in the phase diagram between magnetic and superconducting states in the presence of intraband and interband scattering. Within the quasiclassical approximation we derive and solve Eilenberger's equations, which include a weak external magnetic field, and provide analytical expressions for the penetration depth in the various limiting cases. A complete numerical analysis of the do…
In superconductors with unconventional pairing mechanisms, the energy gap in the excitation spectrum often has nodes, which allow quasiparticle excitations at low energies. In many cases, e.g. $d$-wave cuprate superconductors, the position and topology of nodes are imposed by the symmetry, and thus the presence of gapless excitations is protected against disorder. Here we report on the observation of distinct changes in the gap structure of iron-pnictide superconductors with increasing impurity scattering. By the successive introduction of nonmagnetic point defects into BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x…
Topological flat bands, valley polarization, and interband superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximitized spin-orbit couplings
We study the relation between the spin fluctuation and superconductivity in an heavily hole doped end material KFe$_2$As$_2$. We construct a five orbital model by approximately unfolding the Brillouin zone of the three dimensional ten orbital model obtained from first principles calculation. By applying the random phase approximation, we obtain the spin susceptibility and solve the linearized Eliashberg equation. The incommensurate spin fluctuation observed experimentally is understood as originating from interband interactions, where the multiorbital nature of the band structure results in an…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in hexagonal iron under pressure poses a question about whether it is of conventional (phonon) or unconventional (magnetic?) origin. We present first-principles calculations of the electron-phonon coupling in iron at $P\agt 15$ GPa, and argue that a conventional mechanism can explain the appearance of superconductivity, but not its rapid disappearance at $P\agt 30$ GPa. We suggest that spin fluctuations, ferro- and/or antiferromagnetic, play a crucial role in superconductivity in this case.
Deviations of low-energy electronic structure of iron-based superconductors from density functional theory predictions have been parametrized in terms of band- and orbital-dependent mass renormalizations and energy shifts. The former have typically been described in terms of a local self-energy within the framework of dynamical mean field theory, while the latter appears to require non-local effects due to interband scattering. By calculating the renormalized bandstructure in both random phase approximation (RPA) and the two-particle self-consistent approximation (TPSC), we show that correlati…
We employ the phenomenological theory of the quasiparticle relaxation based on the simplified two-band description and the spin-fluctuation induced interband coupling to analyze recent normal-state transport data in electron-doped iron pnictides, in particular the Ba(Fe_1-x Co_x)_2As_2 family. Temperature dependence of the resistivity, thermopower and the Hall constant are evaluated. It is shown that their anomalous behavior emerging from experiments can be consistently described within the same framework assuming also non-Fermi-liquid spin fluctuations.
We investigate the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the in-gap bound states localized at magnetic impurities in multi-band superconductors with unconventional (sign-changed) and conventional (sign-unchanged) $s$-wave pairing symmetry, which may be relevant to iron-based superconductors. Without spin-orbit coupling, for spin-singlet superconductors it is known that such bound states cross zero energy at a critical value of the impurity scattering strength and acquire a finite spin-polarization. Moreover, the degenerate, spin-polarized, zero energy bound states are unstable to applied Zeeman fie…
Superconducting mechanism mediated by interband exchange Coulomb repulsion is examined in an extended two-band Hubbard models with a wide band crossing the Fermi level and coexisting with a narrower band located at moderately lower energy. We apply newly developed path-integral renormalization group method to reliably calculate pairing correlations. The correlation shows marked enhancement at moderate amplitudes of the exchange Coulomb repulsion taken smaller than the on-site repulsion for the narrower band. The pairing symmetry is s-wave while it has unconventional phases with the opposite si…
