The newly discovered iron pnictide superconductors apparently present an unusual case of interband-channel pairing superconductivity. Here we show that, in the limit where the pairing occurs within the interband channel, several surprising effects occur quite naturally and generally: different density-of-states on the two bands lead to several unusual properties, including a gap ratio which behaves inversely to the ratio of density-of-states; the weak-coupling limit of the Eliashberg and the BCS theory, commonly taken as equivalent, in fact predict qualitatively different dependence of the $Δ_{1}/Δ_{2}$ and $Δ/T_{c}$ ratios on coupling constants. We show analytically that these effects follow directly from the interband character of superconductivity. Our results show that in the interband-only pairing model the maximal gap ratio is $\sqrt{N_{2}/N_{1}}$ as strong-coupling effects act only to reduce this ratio. This suggests that if the large experimentally reported gap ratios (up to a factor 2) are correct, the pairing mechanism must include more intraband interaction than is usually assumed.
Based on BCS model with the external pair potential formulated in a work Grigorishin (2017) [1], analogous model with electron-phonon coupling and Coulomb coupling is proposed. The generalized Eliashberg equations in the regime of renormalization of the order parameter are obtained. High temperature asymptotics and effect of Coulomb pseudopotential on them are investigated: as in the BCS model the order parameter asymptotically tends to zero as temperature rises, but the accounting of the Coulomb pseudopotential leads to existence of critical temperature. The effective Ginzburg-Landau theory i…
The weak-coupling limits of the gap and critical temperature computed within Eliashberg theory surprisingly deviate from the BCS theory predictions by a factor of $1/\sqrt{e}$. Interestingly, however, the ratio of these two quantities agrees for both theories. Motivated by this result, here we investigate the weak-coupling thermodynamics of Eliashberg theory, with a central focus on the free energy, specific heat, and the critical magnetic field. In particular, we numerically calculate the difference between the superconducting and normal-state specific heats, and we find that this quantity di…
The phenomenology of LiFeAs superconductor can be explained in the framework of a four-band s$\pm$-wave Eliashberg theory. We have examined the experimental data available in literature and we have found out that it is possible to reproduce the experimental critical temperature, the gap values and the upper critical magnetic field within an effective model in moderate strong-coupling regime that must include both an intraband term $λ_{11}\sim0.9$ and an interband spin-fluctuations ($λ_{tot}^{sf}\sim1.5$) coupling. The presence of a non negligible intraband coupling can be a fictitious effect o…
We formulate and solve the Eliashberg equations on the imaginary frequency axis at temperatures below $T_c$ in the weak-coupling limit. We find an excellent scaling at all temperatures, for a given coupling strength, and the normalized order parameter exhibits a BCS-like temperature dependence. The hybrid real-imaginary axis equations are also solved to obtain numerically exact analytic continuations from the imaginary frequency axis to the real frequency axis. This provides a determination of the gap edge, which, in the weak-coupling limit, is identical to the order parameter from the imagina…
We show that in two-band $s$-wave superfluids it is possible to induce quantum phase transitions (QPTs) by tuning intraband and interband $s$-wave interactions, in sharp contrast to single-band $s$-wave superfluids, where only a crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) superfluidity occurs. For non-zero interband and attractive intraband interactions, we demonstrate that the ground state has always two interpenetrating superfluids possessing three spectroscopically distinct regions where pairing is qualitatively different: (I) BCS pairing in both b…
The experimental critical temperatures and gap values of the superconducting pnictides of both the 1111 and 122 families can be simultaneously reproduced within the Eliashberg theory by using a three-band model where the dominant role is played by interband interactions and the order parameter undergoes a sigh reversal between hole and electron bands (s+- wave symmetry). High values of the electron-boson coupling constants and small typical boson energies (in agreement with experiments) are necessary to obtain the values of all the gaps and to correctly reproduce their temperature dependence.
In three-band BCS superconductors with repulsive interband interactions, frustration between the bands can lead to an inherently complex gap function, arising out of a phase difference between the bands in the range 0 and π. Since the complex conjugate of this state is also a solution, the ground state is degenerate, and there appears a time-reversal-symmetry-broken state. In this paper we investigate the existence of this state as a function of interband coupling strength and show how a new phase transition appears between the TRSB and conventional BCS states.
Eliashberg theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding the phenomenon of superconductivity when pairing between two electrons is mediated by phonons, and retardation effects are fully accounted for. BCS theory is often viewed as the weak coupling limit of Eliashberg theory, in spite of a handful of papers that have pointed out that this is not so. Here we present very accurate numerical solutions in the weak coupling limit to complement the existing analytical results, and demonstrate more convincingly the validity of this limit by extending the analytical results to first order …
We present temperature dependences of the large and the small superconducting gaps measured directly by SnS-Andreev spectroscopy in various Fe-based superconductors and MgB$_2$. The experimental $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ are well-fitted with a two-gap model based on Moskalenko and Suhl system of equations (supplemented with a BCS-integral renormalization). From the the fitting procedure, we estimate the key attribute of superconducting state \textemdash relative electron-boson coupling constants and eigen BCS-ratios for both condensates. Our results evidence for a driving role of a strong intraband couplin…
The Eliashberg theory of superconductivity is based on a dynamical electron-phonon interaction as opposed to a static interaction present in BCS theory. The standard derivation of Eliashberg theory is based on an equation of motion approach, which incorporates certain approximations such as Migdal's approximation for the pairing vertex. In this paper we provide a functional-integral-based derivation of Eliashberg theory and we also consider its Gaussian-fluctuation extension. The functional approach enables a self-consistent method of computing the mean-field equations, which arise as saddle-p…
Superconducting EuFe2(As0.82P0.18)2 single crystals are investigated by infrared spectroscopy in a wide frequency range. Below Tc=28K a superconducting gap forms at 2Δ_{0} = 9.5 meV = 3.8 k_B T_c causing the reflectivity to sharply rise to unity at low frequency. In the range of the gap the optical conductivity can be perfectly described by BCS theory with an $s$-wave gap and no nodes. From our analysis of the temperature dependent conductivity and spectral weight at T>T_c, we deduce an increased interband coupling between hole- and electron-sheets on the Fermi surface when $T$ approaches T_c.
We study the normal-state and superconducting properties of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As system by specific heat measurements. Both the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient and superconducting condensation energy are strongly suppressed in the underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. The low-temperature electronic specific heat can be well fitted by either an one-gap or a two-gap BCS-type function for all the superconducting samples. The ratio $γ_NT_c^2/H_c^2(0)$ can nicely associate the neutron spin resonance as the bosons in the standard Eliashberg model. However, the value of $ΔC/T_cγ_N$ near optim…
In this paper, we calculate the superconducting critical temperature as a function of pressure, Tc(P ), using a method based on the functional derivative of the critical temperature with the Eliashberg function, dTc/dA2F. The coulomb electron-electron repulsion parameter, mu*(p) at each pressure is obtained in a consistent way by solving the linearized Migdal-Eliashberg equation. This method requires as the starting input only the knowledge of Tc(P ) at the starting pressure. It applies to superconductors for which the Migdal-Eliashberg equations hold. We study Al, a typical BCS weak coupling …
The recent report of superconductivity under high pressure at the record transition temperature of Tc=203K in sulfur hydride has been identified as conventional in view of the observation of an isotope effect upon deuteration. Here it is demonstrated that conventional theories of superconductivity in the sense of BCS or Eliashberg formalisms can neither account for the observed values of Tc nor the pressure dependence of the isotope coefficient. The only way out of the dilemma is a multi-band approach of superconductivity where already small interband coupling suffices to achieve the high valu…
Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy, we studied SnS contacts in the layered oxypnictide superconductors Sm$_{1-x}$Th$_x$OFeAs with various thorium doping and critical temperatures $T_C = 21-54$ K. We observe a scaling between both superconducting gaps and $T_C$. The determined BCS-ratio for the large gap $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = 5.0-5.7$ and its eigen BCS-ratio (in a hypothetical case of zero interband coupling) $2Δ_L/k_BT_C^L = 4.1-4.6$ both exceeding the weak-coupling limit 3.52, and for the small gap $2Δ_S/k_BT_C = 1.2-1.6$ remain nearly constant within all the $T…
The isotope effect in the superconducting transition temperature is anomalous if the isotope coefficient $α<0$ or $α>1/2$. In this work, we show that such anomalous behaviors can naturally arise within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer framework if both phonon and non-phonon modes coexist. Different from the case of the standard Eliashberg theory (with only phonon) in which $α\le1/2$, the isotope coefficient can now take arbitrary values in the simultaneous presence of phonon and the other non-phonon mode. In particular, most strikingly, a pair-breaking phonon can give rise to large isotope coeffi…
Motivated by the recent experiment of the non-BCS scaling relation of the condensation energy $ΔCE$ vs. $T_c$ ($ΔCE \sim T_c ^β, β\approx 3.5$) [PRB 89 140503 (2014)] for the Fe-based superconductors, we studied the CE and $T_c$ of the multiband BCS superconductors. We showed that the experimentally observed anomalous scaling relation $ΔCE \sim T_c ^{3.5}$ is well reproduced by the two-band BCS superconductor paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$). Our result implies that this seemingly non-BCS-like scaling behavior, on the contrary to the common expectation, is i…
The Hund's-rule-exchange induced and coexisting spin-triplet paired and magnetic states are considered within the doubly degenerate Hubbard model with interband hybridization. The Hartree-Fock approximation combined with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach is analyzed for the case of square lattice. The calculated phase diagram contains regions of stability of the spin-triplet superconducting phase coexisting with either ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism, as well as a pure superconducting phase. The influence of the inter-site hybridization on the stability of the considered phases…
The conductivity and permittivity optical spectra of iron-pnictide Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2 film (Tc=20 K) are analyzed. In the superconducting state, at all temperatures up to Tc the temperature dependences of the magnetic field penetration depth and of the superconducting condensate density are well described within the generalized two-band BCS model with intraband and interband pairing interactions considered. It is shown that the smaller superconducting energy gap 2Δ = 3.7 meV develops in the electronic subsystem while the larger gap 2Δ >= 7 meV opens in the hole subsystem. The normal state para…
Superconductivity is abundant near quantum-critical points, where fluctuations suppress the formation of Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the BCS theory no longer applies. Two very distinct approaches have been developed to address this issue: quantum-critical Eliashberg theory and holographic superconductivity. The former includes a strongly retarded pairing interaction of ill-defined fermions, the latter is rooted in the duality of quantum field theory and gravity theory. We demonstrate that both are different perspectives of the same theory. We derive holographic superconductivity in form of…
The isotope effects for Fe based superconductors are considered by including the phonon and magnetic fluctuations within the two band Eliashberg theory. We show that the recently observed inverse isotope effects of Fe, $α_{Fe} \approx -0.18 \pm 0.03 $,\cite{Shirage0903.3515} as well as the large positive isotope exponent ($α\approx 0.35$) can naturally arise for the magnetically induced sign revered s-wave pairing state within reasonable parameter range. Either experimental report can not be discarded from the present analysis based on the parameter values they require. The inverse and positiv…
We address the problem of superconductivity for non-Fermi liquids using two commonly adopted, yet apparently distinct methods: 1) the renormalization group (RG) and 2) Eliashberg theory. The extent to which both methods yield consistent solutions for the low energy behavior of quantum metals has remained unclear. We show that the perturbative RG beta function for the 4-Fermi coupling can be explicitly derived from the linearized Eliashberg equations, under the assumption that quantum corrections are approximately local across energy scales. We apply our analysis to the test case of phonon medi…
Recently, it has been proposed that a mechanism for the appearance of non-equilibrium superconductivity in a resonantly driven semiconductor with repulsive interband interactions exists.~\cite{Goldstein_PRB15} The underlying microscopic model relies on the appearance of a specific fermionic dissipation mechanism and the careful simultaneous tailoring of the electronic dispersion relation and electron-electron interactions. We, instead, show that the phenomenon is rather general and does not need a special fine tuning of parameters. By considering a pair of bands with locally the same sign of c…
We have studied the electron-phonon and superconducting properties of the Mg{1-x}AlxB2 and MgB{2(1-y)}C{2y} alloys within the framework of density functional theory using the self-consistent virtual-crystal approximation. For both alloys, the Eliashberg spectral functions and the electron-phonon coupling constants have been calculated in the two-band model for several concentrations up to x(Al)=0.55 and y(C)=0.175. We solved numerically the two-band Eliashberg gap equations without considering interband scattering. Using a single parameter for the Coulomb pseudopotential, which was determined …
We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monoto…
We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the…
In this paper we provide a comprehesive analysis of different properties of pnictides both in the normal and superconducting state, with a particular focus on the optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system. We show that, by using the band dispersions experimentally measured by ARPES, a four-band Eliashberg model in the intermediate-coupling regime can account for both the measured hierarchy of the gaps and for several spectroscopic and thermodynamic signatures of low-energy renormalization. These include the kinks in the band dispersion and the effective masses determined via specifi…
The basic features of multi-band superconductivity and its implications are derived. In particular, it is shown that enhancements of the superconducting transition temperature take place due to interband interactions. In addition, isotope effects differ substantially from the typical BCS scheme as soon as polaronic coupling effects are present. Special cases of the model are polaronic coupling in one band as realized e.g., in cuprates, coexistence of a flat band and a steep band like in MgB2, crossovers between extreme cases. The advantages of the multiband approach as compared to the single b…
It has been now over 20 years since the discovery of the first high temperature superconductor by Georg Bednorz and Alex Mueller in 1986 and yet, despite intensive effort, no universally accepted theory exists about the origin of high-temperature superconductivity. A controversial issue on whether the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is crucial for high-temperature superconductivity or weak and inessential has been one of the most challenging problems of contemporary condensed matter physics. I briefly review our recent theoretical results, which in conjunction with a great number of experime…
The discovery of a record high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 288 K in a pressurized hydride inspires new hope to realize ambient condition superconductivity. Here, we give a perspective on the theoretical and experimental studies of hydride superconductivity. Predictions based on the BCS-Eliashberg-Midgal theory with the aid of density functional theory have been playing a leading role in the research and guiding the experimental realizations. To date, about twenty hydrides experiments have been reported to exhibit high-Tc superconductivity and their Tc agree well with the pre…
The nature of superconductivity in the dilute semiconductor SrTiO$_3$ has remained an open question for more than 50 years. The extremely low carrier densities ($10^{18}$ - $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$) at which superconductivity occurs suggests an unconventional origin of superconductivity outside of the adiabatic limit on which the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) theories are based. We take advantage of a newly developed method for engineering band alignments at oxide interfaces and access the electronic structure of Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ using high resolution tunneling spectr…
The effective attractive interaction between electrons, mediated by electron-phonon coupling, is a well-established mechanism of conventional superconductivity. In metals exhibiting a Fermi surface, the critical temperature of superconductivity is exponentially smaller than the characteristic phonon energy. Therefore such superconductors are found only at temperatures below a few Kelvin. Systems with flat energy bands have been suggested to cure the problem and provide a route to room-temperature superconductivity, but previous studies are limited to only BCS models with an effective attractiv…
We study the superfluid critical temperature in a two-band attractive Fermi system with strong pairing fluctuations associated with both interband and intraband couplings. We focus specifically on a configuration where the intraband coupling is varied from weak to strong in a shallow band coupled to a weakly-interacting deeper band. The whole crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) condensation of largely overlapping Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of tightly bound molecules is covered by our analysis, which is based on the extension of the Nozières-Schmitt-Rink…
The unconventional superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric LaNiC$_2$, and its evolution with pressure, is analyzed basing on the {\it ab initio} computations and the full Eliashberg formalism. First principles calculations of the electronic structure, phonons and the electron-phonon coupling are reported in the pressure range 0-15 GPa. The thermodynamic properties of the superconducting state were determined numerically solving the Eliashberg equations. We found that already at $p=0$ GPa, the superconducting parameters deviate from the BCS-type, and a large value of the Coulomb pseudopoten…
The superconducting pairing state of LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is studied by measuring the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,B)$ and the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ using a tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO)-based method and by transverse field muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) spectroscopy. $λ(T)$ follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\ll T_{c}$, but its zero-temperature value $λ(0)$ increases linearly with magnetic field. Detailed analyses demonstrate that both $λ(T)$ and the corresponding $ρ_{s}(T)$, measured in the Meissner state by the TDO method are well described by a two-gap $γ$ model wi…
We study the relation between the spin fluctuation and superconductivity in an heavily hole doped end material KFe$_2$As$_2$. We construct a five orbital model by approximately unfolding the Brillouin zone of the three dimensional ten orbital model obtained from first principles calculation. By applying the random phase approximation, we obtain the spin susceptibility and solve the linearized Eliashberg equation. The incommensurate spin fluctuation observed experimentally is understood as originating from interband interactions, where the multiorbital nature of the band structure results in an…
