We revisit here the recent proposal for overspinning a nearly extreme black hole by means of a quantum tunneling process. We show that electrically neutral massless fermions evade possible back reactions effects related to superradiance, confirming the view that it would be indeed possible to form a naked singularity due to quantum effects.
We check the weak cosmic censorship conjecture by attempting to overspin the Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole with test particle. The study suggests that the Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole can be over-spun showing the violation of cosmic censorship conjecture.
We study the scenario in which a massive particle is thrown into a rapidly rotating Kerr black hole in an attempt to spin it up beyond its extremal limit, challenging weak cosmic censorship. We work in black-hole perturbation theory, and focus on non-spinning, uncharged particles sent in on equatorial orbits. We first identify the complete parameter-space region in which overspinning occurs when back-reaction effects from the particle's self-gravity are ignored. We find, in particular, that overspinning can be achieved only with particles sent in from infinity. Gravitational self-force effects…
In the conventional approach, fermionic test fields lead to a generic overspinning of black holes resulting in the formation of naked singularities. The absorption of the fermionic test fields with arbitrarily low frequencies is allowed for which the contribution to the angular momentum parameter of the space-time diverges. Recently we have suggested a more subtle treatment of the problem considering the fact that only the fraction of the test fields that is absorbed by the black hole contributes to the space-time parameters. Here, we re-consider the interaction of massless spin $(1/2)$ fields…
We evaluate the validity of the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the third law of black hole dynamics for Kerr-MOG black holes interacting with scalar test fields. Ignoring backreaction effects, we first show that both extremal and nearly extremal Kerr-MOG black holes can be overspun into naked singularities by scalar test fields with a frequency slightly above the superradiance limit. In addition, nearly extremal Kerr-Mog black holes can be continuously driven to extremality by test fields. Next, we employ backreaction effects based on the argument that the angular velocity o…
It has been claimed that in a test of an asymptotically AdS version of weak cosmic censorship conjecture by attempting to overspin a BTZ black hole with test particles, one finds that it is not possible to spin-up the black hole past its extremal limit. The result of this analysis is restricted to the case where the initial black hole is extremal. We extend this analysis to find that massive test particles can overspin the black hole, if we start with a nearly extremal black hole, instead. We also consider the interaction of the BTZ black hole with test fields. We show that overspinning of nea…
It turns out that repulsive effect due to rotation of a rotating black hole dominates over attraction due to mass for large $r$ in dimensions $>5$. This gives rise to a remarkable result that black hole in these higher dimensions in contrast to lower dimensional ones cannot be overspun even under linear test particle accretion. Further if a black hole in dimension $>4$ has one of its rotation parameters zero, it has only one horizon and hence it can never be overspun. Thus rotating black holes in six and higher dimensions, and those with one rotation parameter switched off, would always obey t…
In this paper, we investigate the Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture in nearly extremal Kerr black hole by absorbing particles . In previous work, they ignore the process of black hole absorbing particles. They assume the whole particle can be absorbed and the overspinning occurs. However, it is questionable whether the whole particle can be absorbed. Therefore, we will investigate it in this paper. We consider the absorption process of a particle with finite size. During this absorption process, the black hole's parameters will change. This change will prevent the rest part of particle enter b…
We examine a nearly extreme macroscopic Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in the context of semi-classical gravity. The absorption rate associated with the quantum tunneling process of scalar particles whereby this black hole can acquire enough angular momentum to violate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is shown to be nonzero.
We have developed a methodology to test the age-old cosmic censorship hypothesis in Kerr geometry. We have shown that the Kerr black hole can be overspun by particles captured from the innermost stable circular orbit. However, it appears that this does not happen for particles coming from infinity. We have also observed that overspinning becomes possible only when the black hole approaches a near-extremal limit, which approaches as we increase the black hole's mass. Our study demonstrates that an extremal black hole cannot be overspun. However, our methodology neglects backreaction and self-fo…
The new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald are designed to test the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) by overspinning or overcharging the Kerr-Newman black hole in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Following their setup, in this paper, we investigate the WCCC in the higher-dimensional charged black hole with a nonlinear electrodynamics source. We derive the first and seconder order perturbation inequalities of the charged collision matter based on the Iyer-Wald formalism as well as the null energy conditions, and show that they share the similar form …
It is known that a near-extremal Kerr black hole can be spun up beyond its extremal limit by capturing a test particle. Here we show that overspinning is always averted once back-reaction from the particle's own gravity is properly taken into account. We focus on nonspinning, uncharged, massive particles thrown in along the equatorial plane, and work in the first-order self-force approximation (i.e., we include all relevant corrections to the particle's acceleration through linear order in the ratio, assumed small, between the particle's energy and the black hole's mass). Our calculation is a …
It has been argued that, starting with a slightly sub-extremal Kerr black hole instead of an extremal one, it is possible to overspin a black hole past the extremal limit and turn it into a naked singularity by sending test bodies, if one neglects radiative and self-force effects. In this work we show that (i) an extremal Kerr black hole can not be overspun as a result of the interaction with massless integer spin test fields (scalar, electromagnetic, or gravitational), (ii) overspinning can be achieved if we start with a nearly extremal black hole instead, and (iii) for the scalar field, the …
A thought experiment considered recently in the literature, in which it is investigated whether a dyonic Kerr-Newman black hole can be destroyed by overcharging or overspinning it past extremality by a massive complex scalar test field, is revisited. Another derivation of the result that this is not possible, i.e. the weak cosmic censorship is not violated in this thought experiment, is given. The derivation is based on conservation laws, on a null energy condition, and on specific properties of the metric and the electromagnetic field of dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes. The metric is kept fixe…
It has been shown previously that an extremal Reissner-Nordström or an extremal Kerr black hole cannot be overcharged or overspun by a test particle if radiative and self-force effects are neglected. In this paper, we consider extremal charged and rotating black holes with cosmological constants. By studying the motion of test particles, we find the following results: An extremal Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole can be overcharged by a test particle but an extremal Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole cannot be overcharged. We also show that both extrmal Kerr-de…
In this work we investigate validity of the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture in the interaction of Kerr-Sen black holes with neutral test fields. Previous studies of the Klein-Gordon equation on Kerr-Sen background imply that superradiance occurs for scalar fields. We show that scalar fields can overspin a nearly extremal black hole into a naked singularity, but the modes that could overspin an extremal black hole are not absorbed due to superradiance. From Kerr analogy one can naively expect superradiance to be absent for fermionic fields. In such a case overspinning becomes gene…
We argue that the variational method in Wald type thought experiments, involves order of magnitude problems when one imposes the fact that $δM$ is inherently a first order quantity itself. One observes that the contribution of the second order perturbations is actually of the fourth order. Therefore backreactions have to be explicitly calculated. Here, we re-consider the overspinning problem for Kerr-Newman black holes interacting with test fields. We calculate the backreaction effects due to the induced increase in the angular velocity of the event horizon, which brings a partial solution to …
We revisit the mechanism for violating the weak cosmic-censorship conjecture (WCCC) by overspinning a nearly-extreme charged black hole. The mechanism consists of an incoming massless neutral scalar particle, with low energy and large angular momentum, tunneling into the hole. We investigate the effect of the large angular momentum of the incoming particle on the background geometry and address recent claims that such a back-reaction would invalidate the mechanism. We show that the large angular momentum of the incident particle does not constitute an obvious impediment to the success of the o…
In this paper it is argued that even invoking the dominant energy condition, the Einstein's field equations admit nonglobally hyperbolic, asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes with locally naked singularities and with Cauchy horizons failing to be surfaces of infinite gravitational blueshift; what is more, it is shown the existence of space-time solutions containing Cauchy horizons expected to be stable against small linear nonstationary axisymmetric perturbations in an open set of the physical parameter space where the positive cosmological constant is nearly zero. The price to pay is a violati…
We investigate the consequences of throwing point particles into odd-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) backgrounds. We restrict our attention to the case in which the angular momenta of the background geometry are all equal. This process allows us to test the generalization of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture to asymptotically AdS spacetimes in higher dimensions. We find no evidence for overspinning in D = 5, 7, 9 and 11 dimensions. Instead, test particles carrying the maximum possible angular momentum that still fall into an extremal rotating blac…
Recently, several authors have studied the possibility of overspinning or overcharging an existing black hole to destroy its event horizon and make the central singularity naked. When all the effects are properly taken into account, any attempt to destroy the black hole seems to be doomed to fail, in agreement with the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In this letter, we study the possibility of destroying the event horizon of regular black holes. These objects have no central singularity and therefore they are not protected by the cosmic censorship hypothesis. Our results strongly support th…
We construct a gedanken experiment, in which a weak wave packet of the complex massive scalar field interacts with a four-parameter (mass, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charges) Kerr-Newman black hole. We show that this interaction cannot convert an extreme the black hole into a naked sigularity for any black hole parameters and any generic wave packet configuration. The analysis therefore provides support for the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.
We construct thought experiments involving the perturbations of Kerr-Newman black holes by neutral test fields to evaluate the validity of the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture. We first show that neglecting backreaction effects, extremal Kerr-Newman black holes which satisfy the condition $(J^2/M^4)<(1/3)$ can be overspun by scalar fields. This result, which could not be discerned in the previous analyses to first order, is prone to be fixed by employing backreaction effects. However the perturbation of Kerr-Newman black holes by neutrino fields leads to a generic overspinning of …
Motivated by the recent attempts to violate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for near-extreme black-holes, we consider the possibility of overcharging a near-extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole by the quantum tunneling of charged particles. We consider the scattering of spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles by the black hole in a unified framework and obtain analytically, for the first time, the pertinent reflection and transmission coefficients without any small charge approximation. Based on these results, we propose some gedanken experiments that could lead to the violation of the weak cosmi…
We study the phenomena of mass inflation using the Ori model for a rotating BTZ black hole that is sufficiently far from extremality, and show that the right Cauchy horizon ($\mathcal{CH}^+_R$) of the BTZ black hole becomes singular. Motivated by the recent analysis of Dias, Reall, Santos [J. High Energy Phys. 12 (2019) 097], we choose the retrograde quasinormal modes to govern the decay of perturbations exterior to the black hole. The resulting model captures the violation of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture near extremality. On the other hand, far from extremality, the $\mathcal{CH}^+…
Treating the cosmological constant as a dynamical variable, we investigate the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of a charged AdS black hole (BH) in the Rastall gravity. We determine the energy momentum relation of charged fermion at the horizon of the BH by using the Dirac equation. Based on this relation, we show that the first law of thermodynamics (FLT) still holds as a fermion is absorbed by the BH. However, the entropy of both the extremal and near-extremal BH decreases in the irreversible process, which means that the second law of thermodynamics (SLT) is viola…
We give a brief overview of black-hole solutions in four-dimensional supergravity theories and their extremal and supersymmetric limits. We also address problems like cosmic censorship and no-hair theorems in supergravity theories. While supergravity by itself seems not to be enough to enforce cosmic censorship and absence of primary scalar hair, superstring theory may be.
The destruction of the event horizon of a nonsingular black hole, which is not prevented by the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, might provide us the possibility to access quantum regime of gravity inside black hole. We investigate the possibility of overspinning a nonsingular rotating quantum-corrected black hole by a test particle and a scalar field in this paper, and analyse the effect of the quantum parameter on the destruction of the event horizon. For the test particle injection, both extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overspun due to the existence of the quantum paramete…
Vector unparticle couplings to standard model fields produce repulsive corrections to gravity. From a general relativistic perspective, this leads to an effective Reissner-Nordström-like metric whose "charge" is a function of the unparticle coupling constant $λ$, and therefore can admit naked singularities. Requiring the system to respect cosmic censorship provides a new method of constraining the value of $λ$. These limits are extremely loose for stellar-mass black holes, but commensurate with existing bounds for primordial black holes. In the case of theoretical low-mass black holes, the bou…
Spacetime singularities that arise in gravitational collapse are always hidden inside of black holes. This is the essence of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. The hypothesis, put forward by Penrose 40 years ago, is still one of the most important open questions in general relativity. In this Letter, we reanalyze extreme situations which have been considered as counterexamples to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In particular, we consider the absorption of scalar particles with large angular momentum by a black hole. Ignoring back reaction effects may lead one to conclude that the in…
The influential theorems of Hawking and Penrose demonstrate that spacetime singularities are ubiquitous features of general relativity, Einstein's theory of gravity. The utility of classical general relativity in describing gravitational phenomena is maintained by the cosmic censorship principle. This conjecture, whose validity is still one of the most important open questions in general relativity, asserts that the undesirable spacetime singularities are always hidden inside of black holes. In this Letter we reanalyze extreme situations which have been considered as counterexamples to the cos…
We study linear scalar perturbations of black holes in two-dimensional (2D) gravity models with a particular emphasis on Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We obtain an exact expression of the quasinormal mode frequencies for single horizon black holes in JT gravity and then verify it numerically using the Horowitz-Hubeny method. For a 2D Reissner-Nordström like solution, we find that the massless scalar wave equation reduces to the confluent Heun equation using which we calculate the Hawking spectra. Finally, we consider the dimensionally reduced Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and o…
The swampland distance conjecture (SDC) addresses the ability of effective field theory to describe distant points in moduli space. It is natural to ask whether there is a local version of the SDC: is it possible to construct local excitations in an EFT that sample extreme regions of moduli space? In many cases such excitations exhibit horizons or instabilities, suggesting that there are bounds on the size and structure of field excitations that can be achieved in EFT. Static bubbles in ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory provide a simple class of examples: the KK radius goes to zero on a smooth surf…
In this addendum to [arXiv:1402.5674] two points are discussed. In the first additional evidence is provided for a dual connection between the geometric length of an Einstein-Rosen bridge and the computational complexity of the quantum state of the dual CFT's. The relation between growth of complexity and Page's ``Extreme Cosmic Censorship" principle is also remarked on. The second point involves a gedanken experiment in which Alice measures a complete set of commuting observables at her end of an Einstein-Rosen bridge is discussed. An apparent paradox is resolved by appealing to the propertie…
We show that a Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be formed by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN naked singularity. This is in contrast to the fact that a RN naked singularity is prohibited from forming by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN black hole. This implies the strong tendency of the RN singularity to be covered by a horizon in favour of cosmic censorship. We show that an extreme RN black hole can also be formed from a RN naked singularity by the same process in a finite advanced time. We also discuss the evolution of the charged thin dust shells and the causal…
The stability of the black hole horizon is demanded by both cosmic censorship and the generalized second law of thermodynamics. We test the consistency of these principles by attempting to exceed the black hole extremality condition in various process in which a U(1) charge is added to a nearly extreme Reissner--Nordström black hole charged with a {\it different\/} type of U(1) charge. For an infalling spherical charged shell the attempt is foiled by the self--Coulomb repulsion of the shell. For an infalling classical charge it fails because the required classical charge radius exceeds the siz…
In this note we explore a non-static spacetime in quantum regime in the background of $f(R)$ gravity. The time dependent Vaidya metric which represents the spacetime of a radiating body like star is studied in an energy dependent gravity's rainbow, which is a UV completion of General Relativity. In our quest we have used gravitational collapse as the main tool. The focus is to probe the nature of singularity (black hole or naked singularity) formed out of the collapsing procedure. This is achieved via a geodesic study. For our investigation we have considered two different models of $f(R)$ gra…
Recently, two of us have argued that non-Kerr black holes in gravity theories different from General Relativity may have a topologically non-trivial event horizon. More precisely, the spatial topology of the horizon of non-rotating and slow-rotating objects would be a 2-sphere, like in Kerr space-time, while it would change above a critical value of the spin parameter. When the topology of the horizon changes, the black hole central singularity shows up. The accretion process from a thin disk can potentially overspin these black holes and induce the topology transition, violating the Weak Cosm…
We study the merger of black hole (BH)-neutron star (NS) binaries with a variety of BH spins aligned or anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum, and with the mass ratio in the range MBH/MNS = 2--5, where MBH and MNS are the mass of the BH and NS, respectively. We model NS matter by systematically parametrized piecewise polytropic equations of state. The initial condition is computed in the puncture framework adopting an isolated horizon framework to estimate the BH spin and assuming an irrotational velocity field for the fluid inside the NS. Dynamical simulations are performed in full g…
Charged stars have the potential of becoming charged black holes or even naked singularities. It is presented a set of numerical solutions of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations that represents spherical charged compact stars in hydrostatic equilibrium. The stellar models obtained are evolved forward in time integrating the Einstein-Maxwell field equations. It is assumed an equation of state of a neutron gas at zero temperature. The charge distribution is taken as been proportional to the rest mass density distribution. The set of solutions present an unstable branch, even with charge to m…
Black holes are the simplest objects in the universe. They correspond to extreme deformations of spacetime geometry, and can exist even devoid of matter. In general relativity, (electro)vacuum black holes are uniquely determined by their mass, charge and angular momentum. This feature follows from a uniqueness theorem, which can be evaded if one considers higher dimensions or matter fields coupled to gravity. Here we find that Einsteinian cubic gravity, a well-motivated modification of Einstein gravity that includes third-order curvature corrections in accordance with low-energy effective theo…

We have shown in that for arbitrary EOS and radiation transport properties, (even) the idealized spherical gravitational collapse DOES NOT lead to the formation of trapped surfaces: 2GM(r,t)/R <=1. Hence all singularity theorems of Hawking, Penrose and Geroch, built on the assumption of formation of trapped surfaces, get invalidated! And this inequality, demands that M->0 if indeed R->0. We have shown that the final state corresponds to a zero mass BH state and, this state would occur only after infinite proper time indicating that GR is indeed the only naturally singularity free theory for is…
