We study linear scalar perturbations of black holes in two-dimensional (2D) gravity models with a particular emphasis on Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We obtain an exact expression of the quasinormal mode frequencies for single horizon black holes in JT gravity and then verify it numerically using the Horowitz-Hubeny method. For a 2D Reissner-Nordström like solution, we find that the massless scalar wave equation reduces to the confluent Heun equation using which we calculate the Hawking spectra. Finally, we consider the dimensionally reduced Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and obtain the exterior and interior quasinormal modes. The dynamics of a scalar field near the Cauchy horizon mimics the behavior of the same for the usual BTZ black hole, indicating a possible violation of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in the near extreme limit. However, quantum effects seem to rescue strong cosmic censorship.
The two-dimensional theory of Teitelboim and Jackiw has constant and negative curvature. In spite of this, the theory admits a black hole solution with no singularities. In this work we study the thermodynamics of this black hole using York's formalism.
A four-dimensional dilaton-gravity action whose spherical reduction to two dimensions leads to the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory is presented. A nonsingular black hole solution of the theory is obtained and its physical interpretation is discussed. The classical and semiclassical properties of the solution and of its 2d counterpart are analysed. The 2d theory is also used to model the evaporation process of the near-extremal 4d black hole. We describe in detail the peculiarities of the black hole solutions, in particular the purely topological nature of the Hawking radiation, in the context of the …
In general, the Gibbons-Hawking temperature based on the Euclidean functional approach shows that de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is globally thermal. In the exactly soluble semiclassical Jackiw-Teitelboim model, we investigate thermal property of de Sitter space by taking into account the quantum back reaction of the geometry. The proper temperature of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is found to vanish. In case of a certain quantum state breaking the de Sitter symmetry, de Sitter space can be made thermally exited; however, in this case the dilaton singularity cannot be …
We analyse the Jackiw-Teitelboim model of 2D gravity coupled to $N$ massless free scalar fields in the semi-classical limit. Two systems are studied which essentially differ in the boundary conditions that are imposed. We find that the thermodynamics has interesting differences. We also analyse the response to additional infalling matter which satisfies the null energy condition. The second law is shown to be valid in both systems for the generalised entropy which takes into account the entanglement across the event horizon due to the matter fields. Similarly we find that the generalised entro…
We investigate generalized Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, coupling the dilaton field with two scalar matter fields. We obtain the equations of motion of the fields and investigate the linear perturbation of the solutions in general. We study two specific situations that allow analytic solutions with topological behavior and check how the dilaton field, the warp factor and Ricci scalar behave. In particular, we have shown how the parameters can be used to modify the structure of the solutions. Moreover, the perturbations are in general described by intricate coupled differential equations, but in s…
The Jackiw-Teitelboim model written as a BF theory in two dimensions is analyzed by using the Dirac's and Faddeev-Jackiw formalism. The analysis consists in finding the full structure of the constraints, the gauge transformations, the counting of degrees of freedom and the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets. The Poincaré symmetry and the diffeomorphisms are found. Further, we show that the Faddeev-Jackiw and Dirac's brackets coincide to each other.
Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with non-vanishing cosmological constant coupled to Liouville theory is considered as a non-critical string on $d$ dimensional flat spacetime. It is discussed how the presence of cosmological constant yields additional constraints on the parameter space of the theory, even when the conformal anomaly is independent of the cosmological constant. Such constraints agree with the necessary conditions for the tachyon field to be a primary --prelogarithmic-- operator of the worldsheet conformal field theory. Thus, the linearized tachyon field equation allows to impose the di…
The Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model arises from the dimensional reduction of charged black holes. Motivated by the holographic complexity conjecture, we calculate the late-time rate of change of action of a Wheeler-DeWitt patch in the JT theory. Surprisingly, the rate vanishes. This is puzzling because it contradicts both holographic expectations for the rate of complexification and also action calculations for charged black holes. We trace the discrepancy to an improper treatment of boundary terms when naively doing the dimensional reduction. Once the boundary term is corrected, we find exact ag…
We study quantum cosmology of the $2D$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with $Λ>0$ and calculate the Hartle-Hawking (HH) wave function for this model in the minisuperspace framework. Our approach is guided by the observation that the JT dynamics can be mapped exactly onto that of the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) model describing a homogeneous universe with spatial sections of $S^1\times S^2$ topology. This allows us to establish a JT-KS correspondence between the wave functions of the models. We obtain the semiclassical Hartle-Hawking wave function by evaluating the path integral with appropriate bounda…
We consider a charged Lifshitz black hole in the large transverse dimension limit. In this setup, the dynamics near the black hole horizon are shown to be effectively governed by a family of two-dimensional models of dilaton gravity depending on the ratio of the dynamical parameter characterizing the black hole and the dimension of spacetime. This family includes the Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) and Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) models and their charged equivalents. This family also contains classes of asymptotically anti-de Sitter models beyond JT, characterized by a running Ricci scalar…
In this letter, we show that Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity can be naturally realized in the Karch-Randall braneworld. Notably the role of the dilaton in JT gravity is played by the radion in a suitably orbifolded version of the setup. In the classical entanglement entropy calculation, there is an apparent degeneracy of Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces. We demonstrate how quantum fluctuations of the radion/dilaton resolves this would-be classical puzzle regarding entanglement wedge reconstruction.
We investigate the cosmology of the two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim model. Since the matter coupling is not defined uniquely, we consider two possible choices. The dilaton field plays an important role in the discussion of the properties of the solutions. In particular, the possibility of universes having a finite initial size emerges.
We study Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with dynamical end of the world branes in asymptotically nearly AdS$_2$ spacetimes. We quantize this theory in Lorentz signature, and compute the Euclidean path integral summing over topologies including dynamical branes. The latter will be seen to exactly match with a modification of the SSS matrix model. The resolution of UV divergences in the gravitational instantons involving the branes will lead us to understand the matrix model interpretation of the Wilsonian effective theory perspective on the gravitational theory. We complete this modified SSS matrix …
It might be tempting to consider that the two-dimensional anti-de Sitter black hole in the Jackiw-Teitelboim model is thermally hot by invoking the non-vanishing surface gravity. So, one might expect that the local temperature would also be blue-shifted near the horizon, while it would vanish at infinity because of the Tolman factor of the local temperature. In this paper, we will show that the local temperature vanishes everywhere, which respects the equivalence principle perfectly in contrast to the case of the asymptotically flat black holes recovering the equivalence principle just at the …
In this paper we use the covariant Peierls bracket to compute the algebra of a sizable number of diffeomorphism-invariant observables in classical Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to fairly arbitrary matter. We then show that many recent results, including the construction of traversable wormholes, the existence of a family of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ algebras acting on the matter fields, and the calculation of the scrambling time, can be recast as simple consequences of this algebra. We also use it to clarify the question of when the creation of an excitation deep in the bulk increases or decrease…
We present a new family of solutions for the Jackiw-Teitelboim model of two-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. Here, a metric of constant Ricci scalar curvature is constructed, and explicit linearly independent solutions of the corresponding dilaton field equations are determined. The metric is transformed to a black hole metric, and the dilaton solutions are expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. Using these solutions we compute, for example, Killing vectors for the metric.
We present non- and ultra-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity as metric BF theories based on the extended Newton-Hooke and extended AdS Carroll superalgebras in two spacetime dimensions, respectively. The extended Newton-Hooke structure, and, in particular, the invariant metric necessary for the BF construction of non-relativistic JT supergravity, is obtained by performing an expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_2$ superalgebra. Subsequently, we introduce the extended AdS$_2$ Carroll superalgebra, and the associated invariant metric, as a suitable redefinition of the extended New…
Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity is a 1+1-dimensional toy model for quantum gravity in four spacetime dimensions. In the absence of matter, JT gravity is a topological field theory and there are no local observables. The introduction of a boundary changes the situation. What was a un-physical gauge direction before turns into a physical boundary degree of freedom (a gravitational edge mode). Starting from the BF formulation of JT gravity, we develop a twistor representation for the boundary charges of JT gravity. We introduce point sources in the bulk and study the coupled gravity plus matter sy…
We show that the free energy at low temperatures for near-extremal black holes is correctly obtained from the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model of gravity. Our arguments apply to all black holes, including rotating ones, whose metric has a near-horizon $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ factor and the associated $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry. We verify these arguments by explicit calculations for rotating black holes in $4$ and $5$ dimensions. Our results suggest that the JT model could prove useful in analysing the dynamics of near-extremal Kerr black holes found in nature.
We study the theory of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with generalized dilaton potential on Euclidean two-dimensional negatively curved backgrounds. The effect of the generalized dilaton potential is to induce a conical defect on the two-dimensional manifold. We show that this theory can be written as the ordinary quantum mechanics of a charged particle on a hyperbolic disk in the presence of a constant background magnetic field plus a pure gauge Aharonov-Bohm field. This picture allows us to exactly calculate the wavefunctions and propagators of the corresponding gravitational dynamics. With this …
As a preparation for its quantization in the loop formalism, the 2-dimensional gravitation model of Jackiw and Teitelboim is analysed in the classical canonical formalism. The dynamics is of pure constraints as it is well-known. A partial gauge fixing of the temporal type being performed, the resulting second class constraints are sorted out and the corresponding Dirac bracket algebra is worked out. Dirac observables of this classical theory are then calculated.
We consider the entanglement island in a deformed Jackiw-Teitelboim black hole in the presence of the phase transition. This black hole has the van der Waals-Maxwell-like phase structure as it is coupled with a Maxwell field. We study the behavior of the Page curve of this black hole by using the island paradigm. In the fixed charge ensemble, we discuss different situations with different charges that influence the system's phase structure. There is only a Hawking-Page phase transition in the absence of charges, which leads to an unstable small black hole. Hence, the related Page curve does no…
We present a general solution for correlators of external boundary operators in black hole states of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We use the Hilbert space constructed using the particle-with-spin interpretation of the Jackiw-Teitelboim action, which consists of wavefunctions defined on Lorentzian $AdS_2$. The density of states of the gravitational system appears in the amplitude for a boundary particle to emit and reabsorb matter. Up to self-interactions of matter, a general correlator can be reduced in an energy basis to a product of amplitudes for interactions and Wilson polynomials mapping be…
We study Python's lunch geometries in the two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim model coupled to a massless scalar field in the semiclassical limit. We show that all extrema including the minimal quantum extremal surface, bulges and appetizers lie inside the horizon. We obtain fully back-reacted general bulk solutions with a massless scalar field, which can be understood as deformations of black holes. The temperatures of the left/right black holes become in general different from each other. Moreover, in the presence of both state and source deformations at the same time, the asymptotic black hol…
We construct solutions within Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity in the presence of nontrivial couplings between the dilaton and the Abelian $1$-form where we analyse the asymptotic structure as well as the phase stability corresponding to charged black hole solutions in $1+1$ D. We consider the Almheiri-Polchinski (AP) model as a specific example within $1+1$ D JT gravity which plays a pivotal role in the study of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)/anti-de Sitter (AdS) duality. The corresponding vacuum solutions exhibit a rather different asymptotic structure than their uncharged counterpart. We find interp…
In this note we study the $1+1$ dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentzian signature, explicitly constructing the gauge-invariant classical phase space and the quantum Hilbert space and Hamiltonian. We also semiclassically compute the Hartle-Hawking wave function in two different bases of this Hilbert space. We then use these results to illustrate the gravitational version of the factorization problem of AdS/CFT: the Hilbert space of the two-boundary system tensor-factorizes on the CFT side, which appears to be in tension with the existence of gauge constraints in the bulk. In this mo…
The field-to-particle transition formalizm based on the effective zero-brane action approach is generalized for arbitrary multiscalar fields. As a fruitful example, by virtue of this method we derive the non-minimal particle action for the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity at fixed gauge in the vicinity of the black hole solution as an instanton-dilaton doublet. When quantizing it as the theory with higher derivatives, it is shown that the appearing quantum equation has SU(2) dynamical symmetry group realizing the exact spin-coordinate correspondence. Finally, we calculate the quantum corrections to t…
We discuss the possibility that gravitational fluctuations ("gravitational-waves") are trapped in space by gravitational interactions in two dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. In the standard geon (gravitational electromagnetic entity) approach, the effective energy is entirely deposited in a thin layer, the active region, that achieves spatial self-confinement and raises doubts about the geon's stability. In this paper we relinquish the "active region" approach and obtain self-confinement of "gravitational waves" that are trapped by the vacuum geometry and can be stable against the backre…
We propose the three-dimensional bulk dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled with CFT$_2$ bath based on partial reduction. The bulk dual is classical AdS gravity with a defect brane which has small fluctuation in transverse direction. We derive full Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity action by considering the transverse fluctuation as a dilaton field. We demonstrate that the fine grained entropy computed from island formula precisely agrees with that computed from defect extremal surface. Our construction provides a Lorentzian higher dimensional dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and therefore offe…
We revisit a deformed Jackiw-Teitelboim model with a hyperbolic dilaton potential, constructed in the preceding work [arXiv:1701.06340]. Several solutions are discussed in a series of the subsequent papers, but all of them are pathological because of a naked singularity intrinsic to the deformation. In this paper, by employing a Weyl transformation to the original deformed model, we consider a Liouville-type potential with a cosmological constant term. Then regular solutions can be constructed with coupling to a conformal matter by using $SL(2)$ transformations. For a black hole solution, the …
Quantum extremal surfaces (QES), codimension-2 spacelike regions which extremize the generalized entropy of a gravity-matter system, play a key role in the study of the black hole information problem. The thermodynamics of QESs, however, has been largely unexplored, as a proper interpretation requires a detailed understanding of backreaction due to quantum fields. We investigate this problem in semi-classical Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, where the spacetime is the eternal two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter ($\text{AdS}_{2}$) black hole, Hawking radiation is described by a conformal field theory…
The study of 2-dimensional surfaces of constant curvature constitutes a beautiful branch of geometry with well-documented ties to the mathematical physics of integrable systems. A lesser known, but equally fascinating, fact is its connection to 2-dimensional gravity; specifically Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, where the connection manifests through a coordinate choice that roughly speaking re-casts the gravitational field equations as the sine-Gordon equation. In this language many well-known results, such as the JT-gravity black hole and its properties, were understood in terms of sine-Gordo…
We study the phase space structure of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model in its connection variables formulation where the gauge group of the field theory is given by local SL(2,R) (or SU(2) for the Euclidean model), i.e. the de Sitter group in two dimensions. In order to make the connection with two dimensional gravity explicit, a partial gauge fixing of the de Sitter symmetry can be introduced that reduces it to spacetime diffeomorphisms. This can be done in different ways. Having no local physical degrees of freedom, the reduced phase space of the model is finite dimensional. The simplicity of thi…
We study time evolution in two simple models of de Sitter quantum gravity, Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and a minisuperspace approximation to Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant. In the former we find that time evolution is isometric rather than unitary, and find suggestions that this is true in Einstein gravity as well. The states that are projected out under time evolution are initial conditions that crunch. Along the way we establish a matrix model dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity where the dilaton varies on the boundary.
We show that the dynamics of the kinematic space of a 2-dimensional CFT is gravitational and described by Jackiw-Teitelboim theory. We discuss the first law of this 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theory to support the relation between modular Hamiltonian and dilaton that underlies the kinematic space construction. It is further argued that Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be derived from a 2-dimensional version of Jacobson's maximal vacuum entanglement hypothesis. Applied to the kinematic space context, this leads us to the statement that the kinematic space of a 2-dimensional boundary CFT can be …
The Regge-Teitelboim formulation of gravity, which utilizes dynamical embeddings in a background space, effectively introduces source terms in the standard Einstein equations that are not attributable to the energy-momentum tensor. We show that for a simple class of embeddings of the Robertson-Walker metric, these source terms naturally generate cosmic acceleration.
Theory of gravity is considered in the Regge-Teitelboim approach in which the pseudo-Riemannian space is treated as a surface isometrically embedded in an ambient Minkowski space of higher dimension. This approach is formulated in terms of a field theory in which the original pseudo-Rimannian space is defined by the field constant-value surfaces. The symmetry properties of the proposed theory are investigated, and possible structure of the field-theoretical Lagrangian is discussed.
We consider the formulation of the gravity theory first suggested by Regge and Teitelboim where the space-time is a four-dimensional surface in a flat ten-dimensional space. We investigate a canonical formalism for this theory following the approach suggested by Regge and Teitelboim. Under constructing the canonical formalism we impose additional constraints agreed with the equations of motion. We obtain the exact form of the first-class constraint algebra. We show that this algebra contains four constraints which form a subalgebra (the ideal), and if these constraints are fulfilled, the algeb…
