For the second version of the paper we completely revised the calculation technique, and the first version should be considered obsolete. It resulted in a change of finale formula for the Casimir energy which is now in agrement with previous calculations. There are some references also added. 9 pages, stadard LaTeX
We study the field theoretical model of a real scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneity in form of a finite width mirror (material layer). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. We calculate the propagator of the theory, the Casimir energy and the pressure on the boundaries of the layer. We discuss the renormalization procedure for the model in dimensional regularization.
We study the vacuum fluctuations of a quantum scalar field in the presence of a thin and inhomogeneous flat mirror, modeled with a delta potential. Using Heat-Kernel techniques, we evaluate the Euclidean effective action perturbatively in the inhomogeneities (nonperturbatively in the constant background). We show that the divergences can be absorbed into a local counterterm, and that the remaining finite part is in general a nonlocal functional of the inhomogeneities, which we compute explicitly for massless fields in $D=4$ dimensions. For time-independent inhomogeneities, the effective action…
Some possible ways for the study of the contributions of some background fields to the bulk Casimir energy have been probed in the framework of the 5D heterotic M-theory.
The experimental observation of intense light emission by acoustically driven, periodically collapsing bubbles of air in water (sonoluminescence) has yet to receive an adequate explanation. One of the most intriguing ideas is that the conversion of acoustic energy into photons occurs quantum mechanically, through a dynamical version of the Casimir effect. We have argued elsewhere that in the adiabatic approximation, which should be reliable here, Casimir or zero-point energies cannot possibly be large enough to be relevant. (About 10 MeV of energy is released per collapse.) However, there are …
The role of bulk matter quantum effects (via the corresponding effective potential discussed on the example of conformal scalar) and of boundary matter quantum effects (via the conformal anomaly induced effective action) is considered in brane-world cosmology. Scenario is used where brane tension is not free parameter, and the initial bulk-brane classical action is defined by some considerations. The effective bulk-brane equations of motion are analyzed. The quantum creation of 4d de Sitter or Anti-de Sitter(AdS) brane Universe living in 5d AdS space is possible when quantum bulk and (or) bran…
In this paper we study the Casimir effect for conformally coupled massless scalar fields on background of Static dS$_{4+1}$ spacetime. We will consider the general plane--symmetric solutions of the gravitational field equations and boundary conditions of the Dirichlet type on the branes. Then we calculate the vacuum energy-momentum tensor in a configuration in which the boundary branes are moving by uniform proper acceleration in static de Sitter background. Static de Sitter space is conformally related to the Rindler space, as a result we can obtain vacuum expectation values of energy-momentu…
The Casimir force between two parallel plates in the Gödel universe is computed for a scalar field at finite temperature. It is observed that when the plates separation is comparable with the scale given by the rotation of the space-time, the force becomes repulsive and then approaches zero. Since it has been shown previously that the universe may experience a Godel phase for a small period of time, the induced inhomogeneities from the Casimir force are also studied.
We discuss the bulk Casimir effect (effective potential) for a conformal or massive scalar when the bulk represents five-dimensional AdS or dS space with two or one four-dimensional dS brane, which may correspond to our universe. Using zeta-regularization, the interesting conclusion is reached, that for both bulks in the one-brane limit the effective potential corresponding to the massive or to the conformal scalar is zero. The radion potential in the presence of quantum corrections is found. It is demonstrated that both the dS and the AdS braneworlds may be stabilized by using the Casimir for…
In a recent series of papers, Schwinger discussed a process that he called the Dynamical Casimir Effect. The key essence of this effect is the change in zero-point energy associated with any change in a dielectric medium. (In particular, if the change in the dielectric medium is taken to be the growth or collapse of a bubble, this effect may have relevance to sonoluminescence.) The kernel of Schwinger's result is that the change in Casimir energy is proportional to the change in volume of the dielectric, plus finite-volume corrections. Other papers have called into question this result, claimi…
In the AdS/CFT description of four-dimensional QCD matter undergoing Bjorken expansion, does the holographic energy-momentum tensor contain a Casimir-type contribution that should not be attributed to thermal matter? When the bulk isometry ansatz that yielded such a Casimir term for (1+1)-dimensional boundary matter is generalised to a four-dimensional boundary, we show that a Casimir term does not arise, owing to singularities in the five-dimensional bulk solution. The geometric reasons are traced to a difference between the isometries of AdS_3 and AdS_{d+1} for d>=3.
The Casimir effect due to conformally coupled bulk scalar fields on background of conformally flat brane-world geometries is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the AdS bulk is considered and the application to the Randall-Sundrum scenario is discussed. The possibility for the radion stabilization by the vacuum forces is demonstrated.
Schwinger's Dynamical Casimir Effect is one of several candidate explanations for sonoluminescence. Recently, several papers have claimed that Schwinger's estimate of the Casimir energy involved is grossly inaccurate. In this letter, we show that these calculations omit the crucial volume term. When the missing term is correctly included one finds full agreement with Schwinger's result for the Dynamical Casimir Effect. We have nothing new to say about sonoluminescence itself except to affirm that the Casimir effect is energetically adequate as a candidate explanation.
Exploiting methods of Quantum Field Theory we compute the bulk polarization tensor and bulk dielectric functions for Dirac materials in the presence of a mass gap, chemical potential, and finite temperature. Using these results (and neglecting eventual boundary effects), we study the Casimir interaction of Dirac materials. We describe in detail the characteristic features of the dielectric functions and their influence on the Casimir pressure.
We study the Casimir energy due to a quantum real scalar field coupled to two planar, infinite, zero-width, parallel mirrors with non-homogeneous properties. These properties are represented, in the model we use, by scalar functions defined on each mirror's plane. Using the Gelfand-Yaglom's theorem, we construct a Lifshitz-like formula for the Casimir energy of such a system. Then we use it to evaluate the energy perturbatively, for the case of almost constant scalar functions, and also implementing a Derivative Expansion, under the assumption that the spatial dependence of the properties is s…
We study the Casimir energy of bulk fields in AdS$_3$ and its relation to subleading terms in the central charge of the dual CFT$_2$. Computing both sides of the standard CFT$_2$ relation $E=-c/12$ independently we show that this relation is not necessarily satisfied at the level of individual bulk supergravity states, but in theories with sufficient supersymmetry it is restored at the level of bulk supermultiplets. Assuming only $(0,2)$ supersymmetry (or more), we improve the situation by relating quantum corrections to the central charge and the supersymmetric Casimir energy which in turn is…
The vacuum energy for a massless conformally coupled scalar field in a brane world set up, corresponding to de Sitter branes in a bulk anti-de Sitter spacetime, is calculated. We use the Euclidean version of the metric which can be conformally related to a metric similar in form to the Einstein universe (S^4 times R). Employing zeta-function regularisation we evaluate the one-loop effective potential and show that the vacuum energy is zero for the one brane and non-zero for the two brane configuration. We comment on the back-reaction of this Casimir energy and on the inclusion of a mass term o…
The vacuum energy-momentum tensor (EMT) and the vacuum energy corresponding to massive scalar field on $\Re_{t}\times [0,l] \times \Re^{D-2}$ space-time with boundary condition involving a dimensional parameter ($δ$) are found. The dependent on the cavity size $l$ Casimir energy $\wt E_{C}$ is a uniquely determinable function of mass $m$, size $l$ and "skin-depth" $δ$. This energy includes the "bulk" and the surface (potential energy) contributions. The latter dominates when $l \sim δ$. Taking the surface potential energy into account is crucial for the coincidence between the derivative $-\d …
We study the field theoretical model of a scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneities in form of one and two finite width mirrors (material slabs). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. Within this model we derive the interaction of two finite width mirrors, establish the correspondence of the model to the Lifshitz formula and construct limiting procedure to obtain finite self-energy of a single mirror without any normalization condition.
The Casimir stress on a cylinderical shell in background of conformally flat space-time for massless scalar field is investigated. In the general case of Robin (mixed) boundary condition formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the dS bulk is considered then different cosmological constants are assumed for the space inside and outside of the shell to have general results applicable to the case of cylindrical domain wall formations in the early universe.
We have studied in a previous work the quantization of a mixed bulk-boundary system describing the coupled dynamics between a bulk quantum field confined to a spacetime with finite space slice and with timelike boundary, and a boundary observable defined on the boundary. Our bulk system is a quantum field in a spacetime with timelike boundary and a dynamical boundary condition-the boundary observable's equation of motion. Owing to important physical motivations, in such previous work we have computed the renormalized local state polarization and local Casimir energy for both the bulk quantum f…
Off-shellness and inhomogeneities are in the non-equilibrium dynamics of the lambda phi^4 model are studied using the closed timepath formalism reformulated as kinetic field theory. We take into account initial correlations up to the 4-point functions. The model is shown to exhibit a SO(1,1) symmetry broken by interactions and initial conditions. The divergence of the corresponding Noethercurrent is calculated and the Ward-Takahashi relations for the broken symmetry are given. They constitute a set of generalized integrated kinetic equations for the general n-point functions. We demonstrate th…
We study a coupled system that describes the interacting dynamics between a bulk field, confined to a finite region with timelike boundary, and a boundary observable. In our system the dynamics of the boundary observable prescribes dynamical boundary conditions for the bulk field. We cast our classical system in the form of an abstract linear Klein-Gordon equation, in an enlarged Hilbert space for the bulk field and the boundary observable. This makes it possible to apply to our coupled system the general methods of quantization. In particular, we implement the Fock quantization in full detail…
We study the influence of the shape of compact dimensions to the Casimir energy and Casimir force of a scalar field. We examine both the massive and the massless scalar field. The total spacetime topology is $M^D\times T^2_θ$, where $M^D$ is the $D$ dimensional Minkowski spacetime and $T^2_θ$ the twisted torus described by $R_1$, $R_2$ and $θ$. For the case $R_1=R_2$ we found that the massive bulk scalar field Casimir energy is singular for $D$=even and this singularity is $R$-dependent and remains even when the force is calculated. Also the massless Casimir energy and force is regular only fo…
Casimir energy is calculated in the 5D warped system. It is compared with the flat one. The position/ momentum propagator is exploited. A new regularization, called {\it sphere lattice regularization}, is introduced. It is a direct realization of the geometrical interpretation of the renormalization group. The regularized configuration is closed-string like. We do {\it not} take the KK-expansion approach. Instead the P/M propagator is exploited, combined with the heat-kernel method. All expressions are closed-form (not KK-expanded form). Rigorous quantities are only treated (non-perturbative t…
We examine the lowest order quantum corrections to the effective action arising from a quantized real scalar field in the Randall-Sundrum background spacetime. The leading term is the familiar vacuum, or Casimir, energy density. The next term represents an induced gravity term that can renormalize the 4-dimensional Newtonian gravitational constant. The calculations are performed for an arbitrary spacetime dimension. Two inequivalent boundary conditions, corresponding to twisted and untwisted field configurations, are considered. A careful discussion of the regularization and renormalization of…
We study the field theoretical model of a scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneities in form of one and two finite width mirrors (material slabs). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. For the single layer system we develop a rigorous calculation method and derive explicitly the propagator of the theory, S-matrix elements and the Casimir self-energy of the slab. Detailed investigation of particular limits of self-energy is presented, and connection to know cases is discussed. The calculation method is found applicable to th…
Following a field-theoretical approach, we study the scalar Casimir effect upon a perfectly conducting cylindrical shell in the presence of spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. The scalar field is modeled by a Lorentz-breaking extension of the theory for a real scalar quantum field in the bulk regions. The corresponding Green's functions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the cylindrical shell are derived explicitly. We express the Casimir pressure (i.e. the vacuum expectation value of the normal-normal component of the stress-energy tensor) as a suitable second-order differential o…
Using our solution for the open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain with N spins and two arbitrary boundary parameters at roots of unity, the central charge and the conformal dimensions for bulk hole excitations are derived from the 1/N correction to the energy (Casimir energy).
Casimir energy is calculated for 5D scalar theory in the {\it warped} geometry. A new regularization, called {\it sphere lattice regularization}, is taken. The regularized configuration is {\it closed-string like}. We numerically evaluate $\La$(4D UV-cutoff), $\om$(5D bulk curvature, warp parameter) and $T$(extra space IR parameter) dependence of Casimir energy. 5D Casimir energy is {\it finitely} obtained after the {\it proper renormalization procedure.} The {\it warp parameter} $\om$ suffers from the {\it renormalization effect}. We examine the cosmological constant problem.
It has always been conventionally understood that, in the dilute limit, the Casimir energy of interaction between bodies or the Casimir self-energy of a dielectric body could be identified with the sum of the van der Waals or Casimir-Polder energies of the constituents of the bodies. Recently, this proposition for self-energies has been challenged by Avni and Leonhardt [Ann.\ Phys.\ {\bf 395}, 326 (2018)], who find that the energy or self-stress of a homogeneous dielectric ball with permittivity $\varepsilon$ begins with a term of order $\varepsilon-1$. Here we demonstrate that this cannot be …
A new model for the origin of dark energy is proposed based on the Casimir effect in a supersymmetry-breaking brane-world. Supersymmetry is assumed to be preserved in the bulk while broken on a 3-brane. Due to the boundary conditions imposed on the compactified extra dimensions, there is an effective Casimir energy induced on the brane. The net Casimir energy contributed from the graviton and the gravitino modes as a result of supersymmetry-breaking on the brane is identified as the observed dark energy, which in our construction is a cosmological constant. We show that the smallness of the co…
Systems with an O(n) symmetrical Hamiltonian are considered in a $d$-dimensional slab geometry of macroscopic lateral extension and finite thickness $L$ that undergo a continuous bulk phase transition in the limit $L\to\infty$. The effective forces induced by thermal fluctuations at and above the bulk critical temperature $T_{c,\infty}$ (thermodynamic Casimir effect) are investigated below the upper critical dimension $d^*=4$ by means of field-theoretic renormalization group methods for the case of periodic and special-special boundary conditions, where the latter correspond to the critical en…
The non-perturbative curvature inhomogeneities induced by relativistic viscous fluids are not conserved in the large-scale limit. However when the bulk viscosity is a function of the total energy density of the plasma (or of the trace of the extrinsic curvature) the relevant evolution equations develop a further symmetry preventing the non-linear growth of curvature perturbations. In this situation the fully inhomogeneous evolution can be solved to leading order in the gradient expansion. Over large-scales both the acceleration and the curvature inhomogeneities are determined by the bulk visco…
We study the Casimir force between defects (branes) of co-dimension larger than 1 due to quantum fluctuations of a scalar field $ϕ$ living in the bulk. We show that the Casimir force is attractive and that it diverges as the distance between the branes approaches a critical value $L_c$. Below this critical distance $L_c$ the vacuum state $ϕ=0$ of the theory is unstable, due to the birth of a tachyon, and the field condenses.
We find the GKO coset construction of the dimension 4 Casimir operator that contains the quartic WZW currents contracted with completely symmetric SU(N) invariant tensors of ranks 4, 3, and 2. The requirements, that the operator product expansion with the diagonal current is regular and it should be primary under the coset Virasoro generator of dimension 2, fix all the coefficients in spin-4 current, up to two unknown coefficients. The operator product expansion of coset primary spin-3 field with itself fixes them completely. We compute the three-point functions with scalars for all values of …
A cosmological model based on an inhomogeneous D3-brane moving in an AdS_5 X S_5 bulk is introduced. Although there is no special points in the bulk, the brane Universe has a center and is isotropic around it. The model has an accelerating expansion and its effective cosmological constant is inversely proportional to the distance from the center, giving a possible geometrical origin for the smallness of a present-day cosmological constant. Besides, if our model is considered as an alternative of early time acceleration, it is shown that the early stage accelerating phase ends in a dust dominat…
In this paper, we calculate the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless conformally coupled scalar field in the background of a conformally flat brane-world geometries, where the scalar field satisfying Robin boundary conditions on two parallel plates. In the general case of Robin boundary conditions formula are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor. Further the surface energy per unit area are obtained . As an application of the general formula we have considered the important special case of the AdS$_{4+1}$ bulk, moreover application to the Randall-Sun…
In the present paper, we investigate regularization of the one-loop quantum corrections with infinite Kaluza-Klein (KK) states and evaluate Casimir vacuum energy from extra dimensions. The extra dimensional models always involve the infinite massless or massive Kaluza-Klein states, and therefore, the regularization of the infinite KK corrections is highly problematic. In order to avoid the ambiguity, we adopt the proper time integrals and the Riemann zeta function regularization in evaluating the summations of infinite KK states. In the calculation, we utilize the KK regularization method with…
We investigate the Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter subject to Robin boundary conditions on two codimension one parallel branes located on $(D+1)$-dimensional background spacetime $AdS_{D_{1}+1}\times Σ$ with a warped internal space $Σ$. The general case of different Robin coefficients on separate branes is considered. Unlike to the purely AdS bulk, the vacuum expectation values induced by a single brane, in addition to the distance from the brane, depends al…
In this paper, we investigate Casimir effect, Weyl anomaly and displacement operator for boundary conformal field theory in general dimensions. We find universal relations between them. In particular, they are all determined by the central charge of boundary conformal field theory. We verify these relations by studying free BCFTs and holographic BCFTs. As a byproduct, we obtain the holographic two point function of stress tensor when the bulk boundary is perpendicular to the AdS boundary.
We discuss consequences of the breaking of conformal symmetry by a flat or spherical extended operator. We adapt the embedding formalism to the study of correlation functions of symmetric traceless tensors in the presence of the defect. Two-point functions of a bulk and a defect primary are fixed by conformal invariance up to a set of OPE coefficients, and we identify the allowed tensor structures. A correlator of two bulk primaries depends on two cross-ratios, and we study its conformal block decomposition in the case of external scalars. The Casimir equation in the defect channel reduces to …
We investigate the role of Casimir energy as a mechanism for brane stability in five-dimensional models with the fifth dimension compactified on an S^1\Z_2 orbifold, which includes the Randall-Sundrum two brane model (RS1). We employ a zeta-function regularization technique utilizing the Schwinger proper time method and the Jacobi theta function identity to calculate the one-loop effective potential. We show that the combination of the Casimir energies of a scalar Higgs field, the three generations of Standard Model fermions and one additional massive non-SM scalar in the bulk produce a non-tr…
We show that the Casimir, or zero-point, energy of a dilute dielectric ball, or of a spherical bubble in a dielectric medium, coincides with the sum of the van der Waals energies between the molecules that make up the medium. That energy, which is finite and repulsive when self-energy and surface effects are removed, may be unambiguously calculated by either dimensional continuation or by zeta function regularization. This physical interpretation of the Casimir energy seems unambiguous evidence that the bulk self-energy cannot be relevant to sonoluminescence.
We show that in the Randall-Sundrum model the Casimir energy of bulk gauge fields (or any of their supersymmetric relatives) has contributions that depend logarithmically on the radion. These contributions satisfactorily stabilize the radion, generating a large hierarchy of scales without fine-tuning. The logarithmic behaviour can be understood, in a 4D holographic description, as the running of gauge couplings with the infrared cut-off scale.
Vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor and the vacuum interaction forces are evaluated for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter satisfying Robin boundary conditions on two codimension one parallel branes embedded in background spacetime $AdS_{D_1+1}\times Σ$ with a warped internal space $Σ$. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor is presented as a sum of boundary-free, single brane induced, and interference parts. The latter is finite everywhere including the points on the branes and is exponentially small for large interbrane distances. Unlike to the pur…
We evaluate the Hadamard function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background with a general scale factor. On the plates, the field operator obeys the Robin boundary conditions with the coefficients depending on the scale factor. In all the spatial regions, the VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. Unlike to the problem with the Minkowski bulk, …
Casimir energy is calculated for the 5D electromagnetism in the warped geometry. It is compared with the flat case(arXiv:0801.3064). A new regularization, called sphere lattice regularization, is taken. It is based on the minimal area principle and is a direct realization of the geometrical approach to the renormalization group. The properly regularized form of Casimir energy, is expressed in a closed form. We numerically evaluate $\La$(4D UV-cutoff), $\om$(5D bulk curvature, warp parameter) and $T$(extra space IR parameter) dependence of the Casimir energy. The warp parameter $\om$ suffers fr…
We study the stabilization of one spatial dimension in (p+1+1)-dimensional spacetime in the presence of $p$-dimensional brane(s), a bulk cosmological constant and the Casimir force generated by a conformally coupled scalar field. We find general static solutions to the metric which require the fine-tuning of the inter-brane distance and the bulk cosmological constant (leaving the two brane tensions as free parameters) corresponding to a vanishing effective cosmological constant and a constant radion field. Taking these solutions as a background configuration, we perform a dimensional reduction…

The Casimir energy for a massless, neutral scalar field in presence of a point interaction is analyzed using a general zeta-regularization approach developed in earlier works. In addition to a regular bulk contribution, there arises an anomalous boundary term which is infinite despite renormalization. The intrinsic nature of this anomaly is briefly discussed.
We compute the one-loop Casimir energy of gravity and matter fields, obeying various boundary conditions, in 5-dimensional S^1/Z_2 and 6-dimensional T^2/Z_k orbifolds. We discuss the role of the Casimir energy in possible radius stabilization mechanisms and show that the presence of massive as well as massless fields can lead to minima with zero cosmological constant. In the 5-d orbifold, we also consider the case where kinetic terms localized at the fixed points are not small. We take into account their contribution to the Casimir energy and show that localized kinetic terms can also provide …

The three dimensional mean spherical model on a hypercubic lattice with a film geometry $L\times \infty ^2$ under periodic boundary conditions is considered in the presence of an external magnetic field $H$. The universal Casimir amplitude $Δ$ and the Binder's cumulant ratio $B$ are calculated exactly and found to be $Δ=-2ζ(3)/(5π)\approx -0.153051$ and $B=2π/(\sqrt{5}\ln ^3[(1+\sqrt{5})/2]).$ A discussion on the relations between the finite temperature $C$-function, usually defined for quantum systems, and the excess free energy (due to the finite-size contributions to the free energy of the …
In our five-dimensional cosmological model, we investigate the role of a Lorentz violating vector "æther" field on the moduli stabilization mechanism. We consider the case of a space-like æther field on a compact circle with Maxwell-type kinetic term. The Casimir energy of certain combinations of massless and massive bulk fields generates a stabilizing potential for the radius of the compact direction while driving the accelerated expansion in the non-compact directions. It is shown that the æther field can reduce the influence of the Casimir force and slow down the oscillation of the radion f…
