Following Shokurov's ideas, we give a short proof of the following klt version of his result: termination of terminal log flips in dimension d implies that any klt pair of dimension d has a log minimal model or a Mori fibre space. Thus, in particular, any klt pair of dimension 4 has a log minimal model or a Mori fibre space.
For a birational analogue of minimal elliptic surfaces X/Y, the singularities of the fibers define a log structure in codimension one on Y. Via base change, we have a log structure in codimension one on Y', for any birational model Y' of Y. We show that these codimension one log structures glue to a unique log structure, defined on some birational model of Y (Shokurov's BP Conjecture). We have three applications: inverse of adjunction for the above mentioned fiber spaces, the invariance of Shokurov's FGA-algebras under restriction to exceptional lc centers, and a remark on the moduli part of p…
Shokurov conjectured that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the ascending chain condition. In this paper we prove that the conjecture holds for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties and, more generally, on locally complete intersection varieties and on varieties with quotient singularities.
Let $(X,Δ)$ be a log pair over $S$, such that $-(K_X+Δ)$ is nef over $S$. It is conjectured that the intersection of the non-klt (non Kawamata log terminal) locus of $(X,Δ)$ with any fiber $X_s$ has at most two connected components. We prove this conjecture in dimension $\leq 4$ and in arbitrary dimension assuming the termination of klt flips.
We verify a special case of V. V. Shokurov's conjecture about characterization of toric varieties. More precisely, let $(X,D=\sum d_iD_i)$ be a three-dimensional log variety such that $K_X+D$ is numerically trivial and $(X,D)$ has only purely log terminal singularities. In this situation we prove the inequality \{center} $\sum d_i\le \rk\Weil(X)/(\operatorname{algebraic equivalence}) +\dim(X)$. \{center} We describe such pairs for which the equality holds and show that all of them are toric.
In this paper, we discuss a proof of existence of log minimal models or Mori fibre spaces for klt pairs $(X/Z,B)$ with $B$ big$/Z$. This then implies existence of klt log flips, finite generation of klt log canonical rings, and most of the other results of Birkar-Cascini-Hacon-McKernan paper.
We prove a conjecture due to V.V. Shokurov on the boundedness of $ε$-log canonical complements on surfaces. As an application we give a new proof to the boundedness of weak log Fano surfaces.
Building on results of Kollár, we prove Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties, and more generally, on varieties with quotient singularities.
An explanation to the boundness of minimal log discrepancies conjectured by V.V. Shokurov would be that the minimal log discrepancies of a variety in its closed points define a lower semi-continuous function. We check this lower semi-continuity behaviour for varieties of dimension at most 3 and for toric varieties of arbitrary dimension.
We obtain a correct generalization of Shokurov's non-vanishing theorem for log canonical pairs. It implies the base point free theorem for log canonical pairs. We also prove the rationality theorem for log canonical pairs. As a corollary, we obtain the cone theorem for log canonical pairs. We do not need Ambro's theory of quasi-log varieties.
Shokurov's ACC Conjecture says that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition. This conjecture was proved for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties in [EM1]. Here we use this result and inversion of adjunction to establish the conjecture for locally complete intersection varieties.
It was conjectured by McKernan and Shokurov that for all Mori contractions from X to Y of given dimensions, for any positive epsilon there is a positive delta, such that if X is epsilon-log terminal, then Y is delta-log terminal. We prove this conjecture in the toric case and discuss the dependence of delta on epsilon, which seems mysterious.
Motivated by Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds, we propose an inductive point of view on singularities of pairs, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Our main result characterizes the log canonicity of a pair in dimension N+1 by the log canonicity of another pair (not effective, in general) in dimension N.
In this paper, we show that Shokurov's conjectures on the ACC for $a$-lc thresholds and the ACC for minimal log discrepancies are equivalent in the interval $[0,1)$. That is, the conjecture on ACC for $a$-lc thresholds holds for every $0\leq a<1$ if and only if the set of minimal log discrepancies for pairs with DCC coefficients do not have an accumulation point from below which belongs to $[0,1)$.
This paper characterizes singularities with Mather minimal log discrepancies in the highest unit interval, i.e., the interval between $d-1$ and $d$, where $d$ is the dimension of the scheme. The class of these singularities coincides with one of the classes of (1) compound Du Val singularities, (2) normal crossing double singularities, (3) pinch points, and (4) pairs of non-singular varieties and boundaries with multiplicities less than or equal to 1 at the point. As a corollary, we also obtain one implication of an equivalence conjectured by Shokurov for the usual minimal log discrepancies.
In this paper, we prove that the log minimal model program in dimension $d-1$ implies the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs (eg of nonnegative Kodaira dimension) in dimension $d$. In fact, we prove that the same conclusion follows from a weaker assumption, namely, the log minimal model program with scaling in dimension $d-1$. This enables us to prove that effective lc pairs in dimension five have log minimal models. We also give new proofs of the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs in dimension four and the Shokurov reduction theorem. Other applications …
We prove an analogue of Fujino and Mori's ``bounding the denominators'' in the log canonical bundle formula (see also Prokhorov and Shokurov) for Kawamata log terminal pairs of relative dimension one. As an application we prove that for a klt pair $(X,Δ)$ of Kodaira codimension one and dimension at most three such that the coefficients of $Δ$ are in a DCC set $\mathcal{A}$, there is a natural number $N$ that depends only on $\mathcal{A}$ for which the round down of $\N(K_X+Δ)$ induces the Iitaka fibration. We also prove a birational boundedness result for klt surfaces of general type.
We give an upper bound for the minimal discrepancies of hypersurface singularities. As an application, we show that Shokurov's conjecture is true for log-terminal threefolds.
We consider pairs (X,A), where X is a variety with klt singularities and A is a formal product of ideals on X with exponents in a fixed set that satisfies the Descending Chain Condition. We also assume that X has (formally) bounded singularities, in the sense that it is, formally locally, a subvariety in a fixed affine space defined by equations of bounded degree. We prove in this context a conjecture of Shokurov, predicting that the set of log canonical thresholds for such pairs satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition.
We prove a canonical bundle formula for generically finite morphisms in the setting of generalized pairs (with $\mathbb{R}$-coefficients). This complements Filipazzi's canonical bundle formula for morphisms with connected fibres. It is then applied to obtain a subadjunction formula for log canonical centers of generalized pairs. As another application, we show that the image of an anti-nef log canonical generalized pair has the structure of a numerically trivial log canonical generalized pair. This readily implies a result of Chen--Zhang. Along the way we prove that the Shokurov type convex se…
We prove that the ACC conjecture for minimal log discrepancies holds for threefolds in $[1-δ,+\infty)$, where $δ>0$ only depends on the coefficient set. We also study Reid's general elephant for pairs, and show Shokurov's conjecture on the existence of $(ε,n)$-complements for threefolds for any $ε\geq 1$. As a key important step, we prove the uniform boundedness of divisors computing minimal log discrepancies for terminal threefolds. We show the ACC for threefold canonical thresholds, and that the set of accumulation points of threefold canonical thresholds is equal to $\{0\}\cup\{\frac{1}{n}\…
The goal of this paper is a classification theorem of the singularities according to a new invariant, Mather discrepancy. On the other hand, we show some evidences convincing us that Mather discrepancy is a considerable invariant: By introducing new log-canonical threshold and minimal log-discrepancy by means of Mather discrepancy instead of usual discrepancy of canonical divisors, we obtain the formulas of the new log-canonical threshold in terms of arc spaces, inversion of adjunction for wider class of singularities than the known one, lower seimicontinuity of the new minimal log-discrepancy…
Let T_n denote the set of log canonical thresholds of pairs (X,Y), with X a nonsingular variety of dimension n, and Y a nonempty closed subscheme of X. Using non-standard methods, we show that every limit of a decreasing sequence in T_n lies in T_{n-1}, proving in this setting a conjecture of Kollár. We also show that T_n is a closed subset in the set of real numbers; in particular, every limit of log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties of fixed dimension is a rational number. As a consequence of this property, we see that in order to check Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for all T_n, it is eno…
A singularity is said to be weakly--exceptional if it has a unique purely log terminal blow up. In dimension $2$, V. Shokurov proved that weakly--exceptional quotient singularities are exactly those of types $D_{n}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$, $E_{8}$. This paper classifies the weakly--exceptional quotient singularities in dimensions $3$ and $4$.
Varieties with log terminal and log canonical singularities are considered in the Minimal Model Program, see \cite{...} for introduction. In \cite{shokurov:hyp} it was conjectured that many of the interesting sets, associated with these varieties have something in common: they satisfy the ascending chain condition, which means that every increasing chain of elements terminates. Philosophically, this is the reason why two main hypotheses in the Minimal Model Program: existence and termination of flips should be true and are possible to prove. In this paper we prove that the following two sets s…
We describe the foundation of the log minimal model program for log canonical pairs according to Ambro's idea. We generalize Kollár's vanishing and torsion-free theorems for embedded simple normal crossing pairs. Then we prove the cone and contraction theorems for quasi-log varieties, especially, for log canonical pairs.
