The theory of uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems was initiated in the 1960's (though its roots stretch far back into the 19th century) by S. Smale, his students and collaborators, in the west, and D. Anosov, Ya. Sinai, V. Arnold, in the former Soviet Union. It came to encompass a detailed description of a large class of systems, often with very complex evolution. Moreover, it provided a very precise characterization of structurally stable dynamics, which was one of its original main goals. The early developments were motivated by the problem of characterizing structural stability of dynamical systems, a notion that had been introduced in the 1930's by A. Andronov and L. Pontryagin. Inspired by the pioneering work of M. Peixoto on circle maps and surface flows, Smale introduced a class of gradient-like systems, having a finite number of periodic orbits, which should be structurally stable and, moreover, should constitute the majority (an open and dense subset) of all dynamical systems. Stability and openness were eventually established, in the thesis of J. Palis. However, contemporary results of M. Levinson, based on previous work by M. Cartwright and J. Littlewood, provided examples of open subsets of dynamical systems all of which have an infinite number of periodic orbits.
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…
We show that if (X, f) is a locally connected Smale space such that the local product structure on X can be lifted by a covering with virtually nilpotent group of deck transformations to a global direct product, then (X, f) is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic infra-nilmanifold automorphism. We use this result to give a generalization to Smale spaces of a theorem of M. Brin and A. Manning on Anosov diffeomorphisms with pinched spectrum, and to show that every locally connected codimension one Smale space is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of a torus.
Spectral triples are defined for C*-algebras associated with hyperbolic dynamical systems known as Smale spaces. The spectral dimension of one of these spectral triples is shown to recover the topological entropy of the Smale space.
Dilation surfaces are generalizations of translation surfaces where the transition maps of the atlas are translations and homotheties with a positive ratio. In contrast with translation surfaces, the directional flow on dilation surfaces may contain trajectories accumulating on a limit cycle. Such a limit cycle is called hyperbolic because it induces a nontrivial homothety. It has been conjectured that a dilation surface with no actual hyperbolic closed geodesic is in fact a translation surface. Assuming that a dilation surface contains a horizon saddle connection, we prove that the directions…
Bifurcations of dynamical systems, described by a second order differential equations and by an impact condition are studied. It is shown that the variation of parameters when the number of impacts of a periodic solution increases, leads to the occurrence of a hyperbolic chaotic invariant set.
In this paper, we study the number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms defined on $3-$torus with compact center leaves. Assuming the existence of a periodic leaf with Morse-Smale dynamics we prove a sharp upper bound for the number of maximal measures in terms of the number of sources and sinks of Morse-Smale dynamics. A well-known class of examples for which our results apply are the so-called Kan-type diffeomorphisms admitting physical measures with intermingled basins.
We initiate the study of correspondences for Smale spaces. Correspondences are shown to provide a notion of a generalized morphism between Smale spaces and are a special case of finite equivalences. Furthermore, for shifts of finite type, a correspondence is related to a matrix which intertwines the adjacency matrices of the shifts. This observation allows us to define an equivalence relation on all Smale spaces which reduces to shift equivalence for shifts of finite type. Several other notions of equivalence are introduced on both correspondences and Smale spaces; a hierarchy between these eq…
A classical problem in dynamical systems is to measure the complexity of a map in terms of their orbits. One of the main tools we have to achieve this goal is entropy. However, many interesting families of dynamical systems have every element with zero-entropy. One of said families are the Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The first author and E. Pujals introduced the concept of generalized entropy that extends the classical notion of entropy. In this work, we compute the generalized entropy of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms on surfaces.
We introduce a Milnor metric on the determinant line of the cohomology of the underlying closed manifold with coefficients in a flat vector bundle, by means of interactions between the fixed points and the closed orbits of a Morse-Smale flow. This allows us to generalise the notion of the absolute value at zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function, even in the case where this value is not well defined in the classical sense. We give a formula relating the Milnor metric and the Ray-Singer metric. An essential ingredient of our proof is Bismut-Zhang's Theorem.
A Smale space is a chaotic dynamical system with canonical coordinates of contracting and expanding directions. The basic sets for Smale's Axiom A systems are a key class of examples. We consider the special case of irreducible Smale spaces with zero dimensional contracting directions, and characterize these as stationary inverse limits satisfying certain conditions.
We consider C*-algebras associated with stable and unstable equivalence in hyperbolic dynamical systems known as Smale spaces. These systems include shifts of finite type, in which case these C*-algebras are both AF-algebras. These algebras have fundamental representations on a single Hilbert space (subject to a choice of periodic points) which have a number of special properties. In particular, the product between any element of the first algebra with one from the second is compact. In addition, there is a single unitary operator which implements actions on both. Here, under the hypothesis th…
Smale space is a particular class of hyperbolic topological dynamical systems, defined by David Ruelle. The third author constructed a homology theory for Smale spaces which is based on Krieger's dimension group invariant for shifts of finite type. In this paper, we compute this homology for the one-dimensional generalized solenoids of R.F. Williams.
The classical approach to the study of dynamical systems consists in representing the dynamics of the system in the form of a "source-sink", that means identifying an attractor-repeller pair, which are attractor-repellent sets for all other trajectories of the system. If there is a way to choose this pair so that the space orbits in its complement (the characteristic space of orbits) is connected, this creates prerequisites for finding complete topological invariants of the dynamical system. It is known that such a pair always exists for arbitrary Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms given on any manif…
We analyze the chain recurrent set of skew product semiflows obtained from nonautonomous differential equations -- ordinary differential equations or semilinear parabolic differential equations. For many gradient-like dynamical systems, Morse-Smale dynamical systems e.g., the chain recurrent set contains only isolated equilibria. The structure in the asymptotically autonomous setting is richer but still close to to the structure of a Morse-Smale dynamical system. The main tool used in this paper is a nonautonomous flavour of Conley index theory developed by the author. We will see that for a c…
We first present a general construction of Liouville domains as partial mapping tori. Then we study two examples where the (partial) monodromies exhibit certain hyperbolic behavior in the sense of Dynamical Systems. The first example is based on Smale's attractor, a.k.a., solenoid; and the second example is based on certain hyperbolic toral automorphisms.
In this work we show that the set of Kupka-Smale Gaussian thermostats on a compact manifold is generic. A Gaussian thermostat is Kupka-Smale if the closed orbits are hyperbolic and the heteroclinic intersection are transversal. We also show a dichotomy between robust transitivity and existence of arbitrary number of attractors or repellers orbits. The main tools are the concept of transitions adapted to the conformally symplectic context and a perturbative theorem which is a version of the Franks lemma for Gaussian thermostats. Finally we provide some conditions in terms of geometrical invaria…
The complexity of a dynamical system exhibiting a homoclinic orbit is given by the orbits that it forces. In this work we present a method, based in pruning theory, to determine the dynamical core of a homoclinic orbit of a Smale diffeomorphism on the 2-disk. Due to Cantwell and Conlon, this set is uniquely determined in the isotopy class of the orbit, up a topological conjugacy, so it contains the dynamics forced by the homoclinic orbit. Moreover we apply the method for finding the orbits forced by certain infinite families of homoclinic horseshoe orbits and propose its generalization to an a…
We prove structural stability under perturbations for a class of discrete-time dynamical systems near a non-hyperbolic fixed point. We reformulate the stability problem in terms of the well-posedness of an infinite-dimensional nonlinear ordinary differential equation in a Banach space of carefully weighted sequences. Using this, we prove existence and regularity of flows of the dynamical system which obey mixed initial and final boundary conditions. The class of dynamical systems we study, and the boundary conditions we impose, arise in a renormalisation group analysis of the 4-dimensional wea…
The well known stability conjecture of Palis and Smale states that if a diffeomorphism is structurally stable then the chain recurrent set is hyperbolic. It is natural to ask if this type of results is true for an individual chain class, that is, whether or not every structurally stable chain class is hyperbolic. Regarding the notion of structural stability, there is a subtle difference between the case of a whole system and the case of an individual chain class. The later case is more delicate and contains additional difficulties. In this paper we prove a result of this type for the later cas…
We propose a new method for constructing partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. As a demonstration of the method we show that there are simply connected closed manifolds that support partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
We systematically investigate examples of non-hyperbolic dynamical systems having irregular sets of full topological entropy and full Hausdorff dimension. The examples include some partially hyperbolic systems and geometric Lorenz flows. We also pose interesting questions for future research.
The purpose of this article is to obtain dynamically coherence of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in certain classes of Anosov diffeomorphisms on nilmanifolds, extending a result due to T. Fisher, R. Potrie and M. Sambarino [FPS] on the torus.
We show that partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $d$-dimensional tori isotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism, where the isotopy is contained in the set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, are dynamically coherent. Moreover, we show a \textit{global stability result}, i.e. every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism as above is \textit{leaf-conjugate} to the linear one. As a consequence, we obtain intrinsic ergodicity and measure equivalence for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center direction that are isotopic to Anosov diffeomorphisms through such a path.
This note is concerned with approximation of dynamical indicators as pressures, Lyapunov exponents and dimension-like quantities, in systems with nonuniformly hyperbolic behavior. For this we let $P^*(Φ) := \sup_μ\{h(μ) + μ(Φ)\}$ be a variational pressure defined over a suitable class of Borel measurable potentials and prove that, for regular nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, $P^*(Φ) = \sup_ΩP^*(f|Ω,Φ)$, supremum taken over the family of $f$-invariant uniformly hyperbolic basic sets. We then apply this variational principle to the approximation of dynamical indicators by horseshoes.
We consider a discrete dynamical system on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold and we determine the concept of a hyperbolic set for it. We insert a condition in the definition of a hyperbolic set which implies to the unique decomposition of a part of tangent space (at each point of this set) to two unstable and stable subspaces with exponentially increasing and exponentially decreasing dynamics on them. We prove the continuity of this decomposition via the metric created by a torsion-free pseudo-Riemannian connection. We present a global attractor for a diffeomorphism on an open submanifold of the hy…
We extend the recent spectral approach for quenched limit theorems developed for piecewise expanding dynamics under general random driving [DrFrGTVa18] to quenched random piecewise hyperbolic dynamics including some classes of billiards. For general ergodic sequences of maps in a neighbourhood of a hyperbolic map we prove a quenched large deviations principle (LDP), central limit theorem (CLT), and local central limit theorem (LCLT).
We prove the asymptotic functional Poisson laws in the total variation norm and obtain estimates of the corresponding convergence rates for a large class of hyperbolic dynamical systems. These results generalize the ones obtained before in this area. Applications to intermittent solenoids, Axiom A systems, Hénon attractors and to billiards, are also considered.
We consider some nonuniformly hyperbolic invertible dynamical systems which are modeled by a Gibbs-Markov-Young tower. We assume a polynomial tail for the inducing time and a polynomial control of hyperbolicity, as introduced by Alves, Pinheiro and Azevedo. These systems admit a physical measure with polynomial rate of mixing. In this paper we prove that the distribution of the number of visits to a ball B(x, r) converges to a Poisson distribution as the radius r $\to$ 0 and after suitable normalization.
We investigate the decay rates of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with or without singularities, on piecewise Hölder observables. By constructing a new scheme of coupling methods using the probability renewal theory, we obtain the optimal bounds for decay rates of correlations for a large class of such observables. We also establish the alpha-mixing property for time series generated by these systems, which leads to a vast ranges of limiting theorems. Our results apply to rather general hyperbolic systems with singularities, including Bunimovich flower billiards, semidispersin…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a $C^2$ random partially hyperbolic dynamical system. For the unstable foliation, the corresponding unstable metric entropy, unstable topological entropy and unstable pressure via the dynamics of $\mathcal{F}$ on the unstable foliation are introduced and investigated. A version of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman Theorem for unstable metric entropy is given, and a variational principle for unstable pressure (and hence for unstable entropy) is obtained. Moreover, as an application of the variational principle, equilibrium states for the unstable pressure including Gibbs $u$-states …
We show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a Seifert manifold induces a map in the base which has a pseudo-Anosov component then it cannot be dynamically coherent. This extends work of Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and Potrie to the whole isotopy class. We relate the techniques with the study of certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in hyperbolic 3-manifolds performed in the previous paper by the authors. The appendix reviews some consequences of the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms to the dynamics of lifts of such maps to the universal cover.
