We apply a semi-classical method to the problem of field angle-dependent oscillations of the density of states and thermal conductivity for nodal superconductors and apply our results to the superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. The oscillatory contributions to the thermal conductivity for all possible point node configurations for a superconductor with $T_h$ symmetry are calculated. It is found that experimental results are best accounted for by nodes in the off-axis directions $[\pm \sinϕ_0, 0, \pm\cosϕ_0]$, which are associated with the time-reversal breaking, triplet paired phase $D_2(E)$.
There are now many nodal superconductors in heavy fermion (HF) systems, charge conjugated organic metals, high Tc cuprates and ruthenates. On the other hand only few of them have a well established gap function. We present here a study of the angular dependent thermal conductivity in the vortex state of some of the nodal superconductors. We hope it will help to identify the nodal directions in the gap function of UPd_2Al_3, UNi_2Al_3, UBe_13 and URu_2Si_2.
Here we consider the universal heat conduction and the angular dependent thermal conductivity in the vortex state for a few nodal superconductors. We present the thermal conductivity as a function of impurity concentration and the angular dependent thermal conductivity in a few nodal superconductors. This provides further insight in the gap symmetry of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$.
The structure of the superconducting order parameter in the iron-pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ ($T_c=31$\,K) with line nodes is studied by the angle-resolved thermal conductivity measurements in a magnetic field rotated within the basal plane. We find that the thermal conductivity displays distinct fourfold oscillations with minima when the field is directed at $\pm45^\circ$ with respect to the tetragonal a-axis. We discuss possible gap structures that can account for the data, and conclude that the observed results are most consistent with the closed nodal loops …
Fermi liquid theory is remarkably successful in describing the transport and optical properties of metals; at frequencies higher than the scattering rate, the optical conductivity adopts the well-known power law behavior $σ_1(ω) \propto ω^{-2}$. We have observed an unusual non-Fermi liquid response $σ_1(ω) \propto ω^{-1\pm 0.2}$ in the ground states of several cuprate and iron-based materials which undergo electronic or magnetic phase transitions resulting in dramatically reduced or nodal Fermi surfaces. The identification of an inverse (or fractional) power-law behavior in the residual optica…
The angle dependence at different temperatures of the longitudinal thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}(θ)$ in the presence of a planar magnetic field is presented. In order to study the influence of the gap symmetry on the thermal transport angular scans were measured up to a few Kelvin below the critical temperature $T_c$. We found that the four-fold oscillation of $κ_{xx}(θ)$ vanishes at $T > 20 $K and transforms into a one-fold oscillation with maximum conductivity for a field of 8 T applied parallel to the heat current. Nevertheless, the results indicate that the d-wave pairing symmetry is the ma…
In hole-doped high-Tc superconductors, thermal conductivity increases drastically just below Tc, which has been considered as a hallmark of a nodal gap. In contrast, such a coherence peak in thermal conductivity is not visible in electron-doped compounds, which may indicate a full-gap state such as a (d+is)-wave state. To settle this problem, we study the thermal conductivity in the Hubbard model using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, which predicts that the nodal d-wave state is realized in both hole-doped and electron-doped compounds. The contrasting behavior of thermal conduct…
Although the superconductivity in UPt_3 is one of the most well studied, there are still lingering questions about the nodal directions in the B and C phase in the presence of a magnetic field. Limiting ourselves to the low temperature regime (T<<Delta(0)), we study the magnetothermal conductivity with in semiclassical approximation using Volovik's approach. The angular dependence of the magnetothermal conductivity for an arbitrary field direction should clarify the nodal structure in UPt_3.
Motivated by Sr2RuO4, we consider a chiral superconductor where the gap is strongly suppressed along certain momentum directions. We evaluate the thermal Hall conductivity in the gapless regime, i.e., at temperature small compared with the impurity band width γ, taking the simplest model of isotropic impurity scattering. We find that, under favorable circumstances, this thermal Hall conductivity can be quite significant, and is smaller than the diagonal component (the universal thermal conductivity) only by a factor of 1/ ln(2 Δ_M/γ), where Δ_M is the maximum gap.
We have measured the complex conductivity of a BSCCO(2212) thin film between 0.2 and 1.0 THz. We find the conductivity in the superconducting state to be well described as the sum of contributions from quasiparticles, the condensate, and order parameter fluctuations which draw 30% of the spectral weight from the condensate. An analysis based on this decomposition yields a quasiparticle scattering rate on the order of k_(B)*T/(hbar) for temperatures below Tc.
How to determine the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter is one of the important issues in novel superconductors, which include charge conjugated organic superconductors. We have proposed that the angular dependence of the thermal conductivity in a planar magnetic field provides a new window to look at the symmetry of the order parameter. After a brief summary of the quasiclassical approach we describe how the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, CeCoIn$_5$ and $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ is determined. Also in some of experiments the phononic thermal condu…
In contrast to multigap superconductors (e.g. MgB$_{2}$), the low-temperature properties of nodal superconductors are dominated by nodal excitations. Here we extend for a variety of nodal superocnductors the earlier work by Simon and Lee and Kübert and Hirschfeld. The scaling relations seen in the thermodynamics and the thermal conductivity will provide an unequivocal test of nodal superconductivity.
We describe a mechanism by which the longitudinal thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$, measured in an in-plane magnetic field, oscillates as a function of field angle in layered nodal superconductors. These oscillations occur when the spin-orbit splitting at the nodes is larger than the nodal scattering rate, and are complementary to vortex-induced oscillations identified previously. In sufficiently anisotropic materials, the spin-orbit mechanism may be dominant. As a particular application, we focus on the cuprate high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. This material belongs to the …
We measured the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a new layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics, the ternary telluride Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ with transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 4.3 K. The significant residual linear term of thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field and its rapid field dependence provide evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. By measuring resistivity under pressures, we reveal a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. The existence of gap nodes and superconducting dome suggests unconventional superconducti…
This course has a dual purpose. First we review the successes of the weak-coupling BCS theory in describing new classes of superconductors discovered since 1979. They include the heavy-fermion superconductors, high-Tc cuprate superconductors, organic superconductors, Sr2RuO4, etc. Second, we present the quasiclassical approximation introduced by Volovik, which we extend to describe the thermodynamics and the thermal conductivity of the vortex state in nodal superconductors. This approach provides the most powerful tool to identify the symmetry of the energy gap function Delta(k) in these new s…
We analyze the behavior of the thermal conductivity in quasi-two dimensional superconductors with line nodes. Motivated by measurements of the anisotropy between the interplane and intraplane thermal transport in CeIrIn_5 we show that a simple model of the open Fermi surface with vertical line nodes is insufficient to describe the data. We propose two possible extensions of the model taking into account a) additional modulation of the gap along the axial direction of the open Fermi surface; and b) dependence of the interplane tunneling on the direction of the in-plane momentum. We discuss the …
Since 1979, many new classes of superconductors have been discovered, including heavy-fermion compounds, organic conductors, high-Tc cuprates, and Sr2RuO4. Most of these superconductors are unconventional and/or nodal. Therefore it is of central importance to determine the symmetry of the order parameter in each of these superconductors. In particular, the angular-controlled thermal conductivity in the vortex state provides a unique means of investigating the nodal structure of the superconducting energy gap when high-quality single crystals in the extremely clean limit are available. Using th…
The improved resolution of laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows reliable access to fine structures in the spectrum. We present a systematic, doping-dependent study of a recently discovered low-energy kink in the nodal dispersion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212), which demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of this kink in underdoped Bi-2212. The renormalization of the nodal velocity due to this kink becomes stronger with underdoping, revealing that the nodal Fermi velocity is non-universal, in contrast to assumed phenomenology. This is used together with laser-ARP…
In the last few years the gap symmetries of many new superconductors, including Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, CeCoIn$_5$, $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, YNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C and PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, have been identified via angle-dependent magnetothermal conductivity measurements. However, a controversy still persists as to the nature of the superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. For PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, spin-triplet superconductivity has recently been proposed. Here, we also propose g-wave superconductivity for UPd$_2$Al$_3$ (i.e., $Δ({\bf k})=Δ\cos(2χ), χ= ck_{z}$) based on recent thermal conductivity data.
We propose a model of nodal order parameters for the superconducting A and B - phase of skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_{12} and discuss the associated angular dependent magnetothermal conductivity at low temperatures. The model for the hybrid gap functions \De(k) containing an s- and g- wave parts is consistent with recent thermal conductivity experiments in PrOs_4Sb_12. In particular the model accounts for the data on polar an azimuthal field angle dependence of κ_zz(θ,ϕ). The low temperature behaviour of thermodynamic properties in zero field is also presented. We show that the effect of impurity sca…
Over the past two decades, unconventional superconductivity with gap symmetry other than s-wave has been found in several classes of materials, including heavy fermion (HF), high-T_c, and organic superconductors. Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by anisotropic superconducting gap functions, which may have zeros (nodes) along certain directions in the Brillouin zone. The nodal structure is closely related to the pairing interaction, and it is widely believed that the presence of nodes is a signature of magnetic or some other exotic, rather than conventional phonon-mediated, pai…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity has been a central issue in unconventional superconductors. While the dynamic magnetism could be the source of electron pairing, the static magnetism is generally believed to compete with superconductivity. In this sense, the observation of Q phase, the coupled spin-density wave order and superconductivity, in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is very puzzling. Whether this Q phase origins from the novel Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is under hot debate. Here we report the resistivity and thermal conductivity study of a newly…
We have recently proposed the s+g wave model for superconducting borocarbides. In spite of a substantial s-wave component, this order parameter exhibits the H^1/2 dependent specific heat and a thermal conductivity linear in H in the vortex state. This is characteristic for nodal superconductors when T, Γ<< Δwhere Γis the quasiparticle scattering rate and Δthe maximum superconducting gap. Here we investigate the thermal conductivity parallel to the c- and a- axis in a magnetic field tilted by θfrom the c- axis and rotating within the a-b plane.
The bulk microwave conductivity of a dirty d-wave superconductor is known to depend sensitively on the range of the disorder potential: long-range scattering enhances the conductivity, while short- range scattering has no effect. Here we show that the three-terminal electrical conductance of a normal-metal-d-wave superconductor-normal-metal junction has a dual behavior: short-range scattering suppresses the conductance, while long-range scattering has no effect.
The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor RbFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal ($T_c \approx$ 2.1 K) was measured down to 100 mK. In zero field, the observation of a significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ = 0.65 mW K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$ provides clear evidence for nodal superdonducting gap. The field dependence of $κ_0/T$ is similar to that of its sister compound CsFe$_2$As$_2$ with comparable residual resistivity $ρ_0$, and lies between the dirty and clean KFe$_2$As$_2$. These results suggest that the (K,Rb,Cs)Fe$_2$As$_2$ serial superconductors have a common nodal gap structure.
Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the extended impurity scatterers on the quasiparticle transport of cuprate superconductors in the superconducting state is studied based on the nodal approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scattering processes. It is shown that there is a cusplike shape of the energy dependent microwave conductivity spectrum. At low temperatures, the microwave conductivity increases linearly with increasing temperatures, and reaches a maximum at intermediate temperature, then decreases with increasing tempera…
We obtain general expressions for the residual density of states, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity for non-unitary superconductors due to impurity scattering. We apply the results to the so-called `B phase' of PrOs4Sb12, which we describe using a non-unitary gap function derived from symmetry considerations. The conductivity tensor has inequivalent diagonal components due to off-axis nodal positions which may be detectable in experiments.
The phonon contribution to the thermal conductivity at low temperature in superconductors with line nodes is calculated assuming that scattering by both nodal quasiparticles and the sample boundaries is significant. It is determined that, within the regime in which the quasiparticles are in the universal limit and the phonon attenuation is in the hydrodynamic limit, there exists a wide temperature range over which the phonon thermal conductivity varies as $T^2$. This behaviour comes from the fact that transverse phonons propagating along certain directions do not interact with nodal quasiparti…
The thermal conductivity of organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 (Tc =10.4 K) has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D superconducting planes with high alignment precision. At low temperatures (T < 0.5 K), a clear fourfold symmetry in the angular variation, which is characteristic of a d-wave superconducting gap with nodes along the directions rotated 45 degrees relative to the b and c axes of the crystal, was resolved. The determined nodal structure is inconsistent with recent theoretical predictions of superconductivity induced by the antiferromagnetic spin flu…

High resolution measurements of superfluid density and broadband quasiparticle conductivity have been used to probe the low energy excitation spectrum of nodal quasiparticles in underdoped YBCO. Penetration depth is measured to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. Microwave conductivity is measured from 0.1 to 20 GHz and is a direct probe of zero-energy quasiparticles. The data are compared with predictions for a number of theoretical scenarios that compete with or otherwise modify pure d-wave superconductivity, in particular commensurate and incommensurate spin and charge density waves; d + i s and…
We discuss how to analyze the optical conductivity and Raman spectra of multi-orbital systems using the velocity and the Raman vertices in a similar way Raman vertices were used to disentangle nodal and antinodal regions in cuprates. We apply this method to iron superconductors in the magnetic and non-magnetic states, studied at the mean field level. We find that the anisotropy in the optical conductivity at low frequencies reflects the difference between the magnetic gaps at the X and Y electron pockets. Both gaps are sampled by Raman spectroscopy. We also show that the Drude weight anisotrop…
We introduce and study the nodal liquid, a novel zero-temperature quantum phase obtained by quantum-disordering a d-wave superconductor. It has numerous remarkable properties which lead us to suggest it as an explanation of the pseudo-gap state in underdoped high-temperature superconductors. In the absence of impurities, these include power-law magnetic order, a T-linear spin susceptibility, non-trivial thermal conductivity, and two- and one-particle charge gaps, the latter evidenced, e.g. in transport and electron photoemission (which exhibits pronounced fourfold anisotropy inherited from the…
The in-plane resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ of FeAs-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior $ρ(T) \sim T^{1.5}$ at $H_{c_2}$ = 5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with $ρ(T) \sim T^2$ when further increasing field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field $H_{c_2}$. In zero field there is a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$, and the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that…
The anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. The ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is characterized by a periodic alternative of filled and empty $\hat{b}$-axis CuO chains. By considering the CuO chain induced extended anisotropy impurity scattering, the main features of the anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ are reproduced based on the nodal approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scattering processes, including the intensity an…
We report on the detailed analysis of the infrared (IR) conductivity of two prototypical high-$T_{c}$ systems YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$%_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ throughout the complex phase diagram of these compounds. Our focus in this work is to thoroughly document the electromagnetic response of the nodal metal state which is initiated with only few holes doped in parent antiferromagnetic systems and extends up to the pseudogap boundary in the phase diagram. The key signature of the nodal metal is the two-component conductivity: the Drude mode at low energies followed by a resonance i…
We compute the electrical and thermal conductivities and Hall conductivities of the $d$-density wave (DDW) state in the low-temperature impurity-scattering-dominated regime for low-dopings, at which they are dominated by nodal quasiparticles. We show that the longitudinal conductivity in this limit in the DDW state is not Drude-like. However, the thermal conductivty is Drude-like; this is a reflection of the discrepancy between electrical and thermal transport at finite frequency in the DDW state. An extreme example of this occurs in the $μ=0$, $τ\to\infty$ limit, where there is a strong viola…
We propose that an excitonic gap can be generated along nodal directions by Coulomb interaction in the mixed state of d-wave cuprate superconductors. In a superconductor, the Coulomb interaction usually can not generate any fermion gap since its strength is weakened by superfluidity. It becomes stronger as superfluid density is suppressed by external magnetic field, and is able to generate a gap for initially gapless nodal quasiparticles beyond some critical field $H_{c}$. By solving the gap equation, it is found that the nodal gap increases with growing field $H$, which leads to a suppression…
The thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal ($T_c =$ 1.81 K) was measured down to 50 mK. A significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ = 1.27 mW K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$ is observed in zero magnetic field, which is about 1/10 of the normal-state value in upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In low magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly with field. The overall field dependence of $κ_0/T$ for our CsFe$_2$As$_2$ (with residual resistivity $ρ_0$ = 1.80 $μΩ$ cm) lies between the dirty KFe$_2$As$_2$ (with $ρ_0$ = 3.32 $μΩ$ cm) and the clean KFe$_2$As$_2$ (with $ρ_0$ = 0.2…
In-plane transport properties of nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35) are measured using high-quality untwinned single crystals. We find that both the a- and b-axis resistivities show log(1/T) divergence down to 80 mK, and accordingly the thermal conductivity data indicate that the nodal quasiparticles are progressively localized with lowering temperature. Hence, both the charge and heat transport data do not support the existence of a "thermal metal" in nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, as opposed to a recent report by Sutherland {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 14700…
The U(1) holon-pair boson theory of Lee and Salk(Phys. Rev. B 64, 052501 (2001)) is applied to investigate the quantum scaling behavior of optical conductivity in the two dimensional systems of strongly correlated electrons. We examine the role of both the gauge field fluctuations and spin pair excitations on the w/T scaling behavior of the optical conductivity. It is shown that the gauge field fluctuations but not the spin pair excitations are responsible for the scaling behavior in the low frequency region w/T <<1. Importance for the contribution of the nodal spinons to the Drude peak is dis…
In light of recent experimental evidence of density wave order in the cuprates, we consider a phenomenological model of a d-wave superconductor with coexisting charge, spin or pair density wave order of various form and wave vector. We study the evolution of the nodal structure of the quasiparticle energy spectrum as a function of the amplitude of the coexisting order and perform diagrammatic linear response calculations of the low-temperature (universal-limit) thermal conductivity. The work described herein expands upon our past studies, which focused on a particular unit-cell-doubling charge…
Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystal of PbTaSe$_2$, a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with topological bulk nodal lines in the electronic band structure. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ exhibits a clear "$S$"-shape curve. These results suggest that PbTaSe$_2$ has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps. Therefore, the spin-triplet state with gap nodes does not play an important role in this noncentrosymmetric superconductor with strong spin-orbital…
The prediction and observation of low-temperature universal thermal conductivity in cuprates has served as a keystone of theoretical approaches to the superconducting state, but recent measurements on underdoped samples show strong violations of this apparently fundamental property of d-wave nodal quasiparticles. Here, we show that the breakdown of universality may be understood as the consequence of disorder-induced magnetic states in the presence of increasing antiferromagnetic correlations in the underdoped state, even as these same correlations protect the nodal low-energy density of state…
For high-Tc superconductors, clarifying the role and origin of the pseudogap is essential for understanding the pairing mechanism. Among the various models describing the pseudogap, the preformed Cooper pair model is a potential candidate. Therefore, we present experimental evidence for the preformed Cooper pair model by studying the pseudogap spectrum observed in the optical conductivity of a Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 (Tc = 34.6 K) single crystal. We observed a clear pseudogap structure in the optical conductivity and observed its temperature dependence. In the superconducting (SC) state, one SC …
We consider a quasi two-dimensional superconductor with line nodes in an in-plane magnetic field, and compute the dependence of the specific heat, $C$, and the in-plane heat conductivity, $κ$, on the angle between the field and the nodal direction in the vortex state. We use a variation of the microscopic Brandt-Pesch-Tewordt method that accounts for the scattering of quasiparticles off vortices, and analyze the signature of the nodes in $C$ and $κ$. At low to moderate fields the specific heat anisotropy changes sign with increasing temperature. Comparison with measurements of $C$ and $κ$ in C…
The superconducting gap structure of LaFePO ($T_c=7.4 $K) is studied by thermal conductivity ($κ$) at low temperatures in fields $H$ parallel and perpendicular to the c axis. A clear two-step field dependence of $κ(H)$ with a characteristic field $H_s(\sim 350$ Oe) much lower than the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is observed. In spite of large anisotropy of $H_{c2}$, $κ(H)$ in both $H$-directions is nearly identical below $H_s$. Above $H_s$, $κ(H)$ grows gradually with $H$ with a convex curvature, followed by a steep increase with strong upward curvature near $H_{c2}$. These results indicate …
CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion superconductor with strong similarities to the high-Tc cuprates, including quasi-two-dimensionality, proximity to antiferromagnetism, and probable d-wave pairing arising from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Experiments allowing detailed comparisons of their electronic properties are of particular interest, but in most cases are difficult to realize, due to their very different transition temperatures. Here we use low temperature microwave spectroscopy to study the charge dynamics of the CeCoIn5 superconducting state. The similarities to cuprates, in particular to ul…
The remarkable field dependence of the electronic thermal conductivity observed in MgB_2 can be explained as a consequence of multi-gap superconductivity. A key point is that for moderately clean samples, the mean free path becomes comparable to coherence length of the smaller gap over its entire Fermi surface. In this case, quasiparticle excitations bound in vortex cores can easily be delocalized causing a rapid rise in the thermal conductivity at low magnetic fields. This feature is in marked contrast to that for anisotropic or nodal gaps, where delocalization occurs only on part of the Ferm…
We analyse the behavior of the thermal conductivity, $κ(H)$, in the vortex state of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor when both the heat current and the applied magnetic field are in the basal plane. At low temperature the effect of the field is accounted for in a semiclassical approximation, via a Doppler shift in the spectrum of the nodal quasiparticles. In that regime $κ(H)$ exhibits twofold oscillations as a function of the angle between the direction of the field in the plane and the direction of the heat current, in agreement with experiment.
There is mounting evidence for triplet superconductivity in the recently discovered skutterudite compound PrOs_4Sb_12. In this work, we propose nodal order parameters for the A- and B-phases of this superconductor which are consistent with angle dependent magnetothermal conductivity measurements and with low-temperature thermal conductivity data in the range T > 150 mK. The quasiparticle density of states and the thermal conductivity kappa_zz are derived within the quasiclassical approximation.
To gain insight into the unconventional superconductivity of Fe-pnictides with no electron pockets, we measure the thermal conductivity $κ$ and penetration depth $λ$ in the heavily hole-doped regime of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The residual thermal conductivity $(κ/T)_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $T$-dependence of $λ$ consistently indicate the fully gapped superconductivity at $x=0.76$ and the (line) nodal superconductivity at higher hole concentrations. The magnitudes of $\fracκ{T}\cdot T_c|_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $\frac{dλ}{d(T/T_c)}$ at low temperatures, both of which are det…
We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energ…
We propose a spectroscopic method to identify the nodal gap structure in unconventional superconductors. This method best suits for locating the horizontal line node and for pinpointing the isolated point nodes by measuring polar angle ($θ$) resolved zero energy density of states $N(θ)$. This is measured by specific heat or thermal conductivity at low temperatures under a magnetic field. We examine a variety of uniaxially symmetric nodal structure, including point and/or line nodes with linear and quadratic dispersions, by solving Eilenberger equation in vortex states. It is found that (A) the…
In BiS$_2$-based layered superconductors, the existence of gap nodes on Fermi-surface curves has been suggested from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, whereas the conventional $s$-wave gap has been proposed from measurements of superfluid density and thermal conductivity. To reconcile these two distinct experimental results of the gap node, we investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects in the superconductor with a disconnected pocketlike Fermi-surface structure. Then, we claim that the seemingly contradictory situation concerning the gap node is resolved by a concept of dirt…
