In a recent paper by Giuliani and Rothman \cite{GR}, the problem of finding a lower bound on the radius $R$ of a charged sphere with mass M and charge Q<M is addressed. Such a bound is referred to as the critical stability radius. Equivalently, it can be formulated as the problem of finding an upper bound on M for given radius and charge. This problem has resulted in a number of papers in recent years but neither a transparent nor a general inequality similar to the case without charge, i.e., M\leq 4R/9, has been found. In this paper we derive the surprisingly transparent inequality $$\sqrt{M}\leq\frac{\sqrt{R}}{3}+\sqrt{\frac{R}{9}+\frac{Q^2}{3R}}.$$ The inequality is shown to hold for any solution which satisfies $p+2p_T\leqρ,$ where $p\geq 0$ and $p_T$ are the radial- and tangential pressures respectively and $ρ\geq 0$ is the energy density. In addition we show that the inequality is sharp, in particular we show that sharpness is attained by infinitely thin shell solutions.
We find an exact solution for the stability limit of relativistic charged spheres for the case of constant gravitational mass density and constant charge density. We argue that this provides an absolute stability limit for any relativistic charged sphere in which the gravitational mass density decreases with radius and the charge density increases with radius. We then provide a cruder absolute stability limit that applies to any charged sphere with a spherically symmetric mass and charge distribution. We give numerical results for all cases. In addition, we discuss the example of a neutral sph…
We find a new class of exact solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations which can be used to model the interior of charged relativistic objects. These solutions can be written in terms of special functions in general; for particular parameter values it is possible to find solutions in terms of elementary functions. Our results contain models found previously for uncharged neutron stars and charged isotropic spheres.
In this paper we study the isotropic cases of static charged fluid spheres in general relativity. For this purpose we consider two different specialization and under these we solve the Einstein-Maxwell field equations in isotropic coordinates. The analytical solutions thus we obtained are matched to the exterior Reissner-Nordström solutions which concern with the values for the metric coefficients $e^ν$ and $e^μ$. We derive the pressure, density, pressure-to-density ratio at the centre of the charged fluid sphere and boundary $R$ of the star. Our conclusion is that static charged fluid spheres…
Considering charged fluid spheres as anisotropic sources and the diffusion limit as the transport mechanism, we suppose that the inner space--time admits self--similarity. Matching the interior solution with the Reissner--Nordström--Vaidya exterior one, we find an extremely compact and oscillatory final state with a redistribution of the electric charge function and non zero pressure profiles.
We study spherical, charged and self--similar distributions of matter in the diffusion approximation. We propose a simple, dynamic but physically meaningful solution. For such a solution we obtain a model in which the distribution becomes static and changes to dust. The collapse is halted with damped mass oscillations about the absolute value of the total charge.
Interior perfect fluid solutions for the Reissner-Nordstrom metric are studied on the basis of a new classification scheme. General formulas are found in many cases. Explicit new global solutions are given as illustrations. Known solutions are briefly reviewed.
We present new results concerning the existence of static, electrically charged, perfect fluid spheres that have a regular interior and are arbitrarily close to a maximally charged black-hole state. These configurations are described by exact solutions of Einstein's field equations. A family of these solutions had already be found (de Felice et al., 1995) but here we generalize that result to cases with different charge distribution within the spheres and show, in an appropriate parameter space, that the set of such physically reasonable solutions has a non zero measure. We also perform a pert…
A new class of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system is found in closed form. This is achieved by choosing a generalised form for one of the gravitational potentials and a particular form for the electric field intensity. For specific values of the parameters it is possible to write the new series solutions in terms of elementary functions. We regain well known physically reasonable models. A physical analysis indicates that the model may be used to describe a charged sphere. The influence of the electromagnetic field on the gravitational interaction is highlighted.
We present new exact solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell system in static spherically symmetric interior spacetimes. For a particular form of the gravitational potentials and the electric field intensity, it is possible to integrate the system in closed form. For specific parameter values it is possible to find new exact models for the Einstein-Maxwell system in terms of elementary functions. Our model includes a particular charged solution found previously; this suggests that our generalised solution could be used to describe a relativistic compact sphere. A physical analysis indicates that th…
Interior perfect fluid solutions for the Reissner-Nordstrom metric are studied on the basis of a new classification scheme. It specifies which two of the fluid's characteristics are given functions and picks up accordingly one of the three main field equations, the other two being universal. General formulae are found for charged de Sitter solutions, the case of constant energy component of the energy-momentum tensor, the case of known pressure (including charged dust) and the case of linear equation of state. Explicit new global solutions, mainly in elementary functions, are given as illustra…
The coupled system of the spherically symmetric Einstein--Maxwell differential equations is solved under two different source conditions: non-zero electric charge and pressure anisotropy. Expressions for the metric functions, and pressures which extend the Tolman VII exact solution are deduced from the new solutions. By applying boundary conditions to these solutions, all integration constants are computed in terms of parameters that are physically meaningful.
A new class of solutions to the coupled, spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations for a compact material source is constructed. Some of these solutions can be made to satisfy a number of requirements for being physically relevant, including having a causal speed of sound. In the case of vanishing charge these solutions reduce to those found by Bayin and Tolman. Only the latter can be considered as having physically realistic properties.
Considering a charged black hole (BH) surrounded by a perfect fluid radiation field (PFRF) in Rastall gravity, we investigate this BH shadow and photon sphere on different spherical accretions backgrounds. The effect of the PFRF parameter/BH charge on the critical impact parameter is studied by investigating the light deflection near this BH. The luminosity of these BH shadows in different spherical accretions is obtained, respectively. It is found that the shadow of this BH with infalling spherical accretion is darker than static spherical accretion, and the photon sphere with infalling spher…
Static spherically symmetric anisotropic source has been studied for the Einstein-Maxwell field equations assuming the erstwhile cosmological constant $ Λ$ to be a space-variable scalar, viz., $ Λ= Λ(r) $. Two cases have been examined out of which one reduces to isotropic sphere. The solutions thus obtained are shown to be electromagnetic in origin as a particular case. It is also shown that the generally used pure charge condition, viz., $ ρ+ p_r = 0 $ is not always required for constructing electromagnetic mass models.
With the question, ``Can relativistic charged spheres form extremal black holes?" in mind, we investigate the properties of such spheres from a classical point of view. The investigation is carried out numerically by integrating the Oppenheimer-Volkov equation for relativistic charged fluid spheres and finding interior Reissner-Nordström solutions for these objects. We consider both constant density and adiabatic equations of state, as well as several possible charge distributions, and examine stability by both a normal mode and an energy analysis. In all cases, the stability limit for these s…
This paper aims to explore a class of static stellar equilibrium configuration of relativistic charged spheres made of a charged perfect fluid. Solving the Einstein-Maxwell field equations, we consider a particularized metric potential, Buchdahl ansatz [ Phys. Rev.116, 1027 (1959)] and then by using a simple transformation. The study is developed by matching the interior region with Riessner-Nordstr$\dot{\text{o}}$m metric as an exterior solution. The matter content the charged sphere satisfies all the energy conditions and hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e. the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer…
Motivated by recent work, nonmonotonic behaviours of photon sphere radius can be used to reflect black hole phase transition for Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m-AdS (RN-AdS) black holes, we study the case of five-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS (GB-AdS) black holes in the reduced parameter space. We find that the nonmonotonic behaviours of photon sphere radius still exist. Using the coexistence line calculated from $P-V$ plane, we capture the photon sphere radius of saturated small and large black holes (the boundary of the coexistence phase), then illustrate the reduced coexistence region. T…
Stationary axisymmetric metric describing the exterior field of a rotating, charged sphere endowed with magnetic dipole moment is presented and discussed. It has a remarkably simple multipole structure defined by only four nonzero Hoenselaers-Perjés relativistic moments.
We consider spherically symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell gravities in general $D\ge 5$ dimensions and study their photon spheres and black hole shadows. We show that they all satisfy the sequence of inequalities recently proposed relating a black hole's horizon, photon sphere, shadow and its mass.
When the equatorial spin velocity, $v$, of a charged conducting sphere approaches $c$, the Lorentz force causes a remarkable rearrangement of the total charge $q$. Charge of that sign is confined to a narrow equatorial belt at latitudes $b \leqslant \sqrt{3} (1 - v^2/c^2)^{1/2}$ while charge of the opposite sign occupies most of the sphere's surface. The change in field structure is shown to be a growing contribution of the `magic' electromagnetic field of the charged Kerr-Newman black hole with Newton's G set to zero. The total charge within the narrow equatorial belt grows as $(1-v^2/c^2)^{-…
In this work some families of relativistic anisotropic charged fluid spheres have been obtained by solving Einstein-Maxwell field equations with preferred form of one of the metric potentials, a suitable forms of electric charge distribution and pressure anisotropy functions. The resulting equation of state (EOS) of the matter distribution has been obtained. Physical analysis shows that the relativistic stellar structure for matter distribution obtained in this work may reasonably model an electrically charged compact star whose energy density associated with the electric fields is on the same…
We investigate the properties of relativistic star spheres made of an electrically charged incompressible fluid, generalizing, thus, the Schwarzschild interior solution. The investigation is carried by integrating numerically the hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e., the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, with the hypothesis that the charge distribution is proportional to the energy density. We match the interior to a Reissner-Nordström exterior, and study some features of these star spheres such as the total mass $M$, the radius $R$, and the total charge $Q$. We also display the pre…
This manuscript explores the compact geometries by employing Karmarkar condition with the charged anisotropic source of matter distribution. For this purpose, we consider an explicit model by indulging $\mathrm{g}_{rr}$ metric potential obeying the Karmarkar condition. Moreover, we ansatz the time metric co-efficient following the approach by Adler. The crucial aspect of present investigation is the implication of the Bardeen model as an outer spacetime. Implementation of Bardeen approach turns out to be very interesting as this corresponds to the magnetic mono-pole gravitational remnants emer…
We study exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the interior gravitational field of static spherically symmetric charged compact spheres. The spheres consist of an anisotropic fluid with a charge distribution that gives rise to a static radial electric field. The density of the fluid has the form $ρ(r) = ρ_o + αr^2$ (here $ρ_o$ and $α$ are constants) and the total charge $q(r)$ within a sphere of radius $r$ has the form $q = βr^3$ (with $β$ a constant). We evaluate the critical values of $M/R$ for these spheres as a function of $Q/R$ and compare these values with those given by …
We study exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the interior gravitational field of static spherically symmetric charged compact spheres. The spheres are composed of a perfect fluid with a charge distribution that creates a static radial electric field. The inertial mass density of the fluid has the form $ρ(r) = ρ_o + αr^2$ ($ρ_o$ and $α$ are constants) and the total charge $q(r)$ within a sphere of radius $r$ has the form $q = βr^3$ ($β$ is a constant). We evaluate the critical values of $M/R$ for these spheres as a function of $Q/R$ and compare these values with those given by…
Using the concept of cracking, we have explored the influence of density fluctuations on isotropic and anisotropic charged matter configurations in General Relativity with "barotropic" equations of state, $P = P(ρ)$ and $P_{\perp}= P_{\perp}(ρ)$ and a mass-charge relation $Q=Q(ρ)$. We have refined the idea that density fluctuations affect physical variables and their gradients, i.e. the radial pressure and charge density gradients. It is found that not only anisotropic charged models could present cracking (or overturning), but also isotropic charged matter configurations could be affected by …
Compact objects with a light sphere such as black holes and wormholes can reflect light rays like a mirror. This gravitational lensing phenomenon is called retrolensing and it is an interesting tool to survey dark and compact objects with a light sphere near the solar system. In this paper, we calculate the deflection angle analytically in the strong deflection limit in the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime without Taylor expanding it in the power of the electric charge. Using the obtained deflection angle in the strong deflection limit, we investigate the retrolensing light curves and the separati…
In a static spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell spacetime the class of astrophysical solution found out by Ray and Das (2002) and Pant and Sah (1979) are revisited here in connection to the phenomenological relationship between the gravitational and electromagnetic fields. It is qualitatively shown that the charged relativistic stars of Tolman (1939) and Bayin (1978) type are of purely electromagnetic origin. The existence of this type of astrophysical solutions is a probable extension of Lorentz's conjecture that electron-like extended charged particle possesses only `electromagnetic mass'…
We evolve nonadiabatic charged spherical distributions of matter. Dissipation is described by the free-streaming approximation. We match a self-similar interior solution with the Reissner-Nordström-Vaidya exterior solution. The transport mechanism is decisive to the fate of the gravitational collapse. Almost a half of the total initial mass is radiated away. The transport mechanism determines the way in which the electric charge is redistributed.
The main point of this paper is a suggestion about the proper treatment of the photon gas in a theory of stellar structure and other plasmas. This problem arises in the study of polytropic gas spheres, where we have already introduced some innovations. The main idea, already advanced in the contextof neutral, homogeneous, polytropic stellar models, is to base the theory firmly on a variational principle. Another essential novelty is to let mass distribution extend to infinity, the boundary between bulk and atmosphere being defined by an abrupt change in the polytropic index, triggered by the d…
In this article, Einstein-Maxwell space-time has been considered in connection to some of the astrophysical solutions as previously obtained by Tolman (1939) and Bayin (1978). The effect of inclusion of charge into these solutions has been investigated thoroughly and also the nature of fluid pressure and mass density throughout the sphere have been discussed. Mass-radius and mass-charge relations have been derived for various cases of the charged matter distribution. Two cases are obtained where perfect fluid with positive pressures give rise to electromagnetic mass models such that gravitatio…
We study the static stellar equilibrium configurations ofuncharged and charged spheres composed by a relativistic polytropic fluid, and compare with those of spheres composed by a non-relativistic polytropic fluid, the later case already being studied in a previous work [J. D. Arbañil, P. S. Lemos, V. T. Zanchin, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{88}, 084023 (2013)]. In the relativistic fluid case, a relativistic polytropic equation of state, $p=ωδ^γ$, is assumedd. Here, $δ=ρ-p/(γ-1)$, with $δ$ and $ρ$ being the rest mass density and the energy density, respectively, and $ω$ and $γ$ are respectively the po…
Angular momentum balance is examined in the context of the electrodynamics of a spinning charged sphere, which is allowed to possess any variable angular velocity. We calculate the electric and magnetic fields of the (hollow) sphere, and express them as expansions in powers of $τ/t_c \ll 1$, the ratio of the light-travel time $τ$ across the sphere and the characteristic time scale $t_c$ of variation of the angular velocity. From the fields we compute the self-torque exerted by the fields on the sphere, and argue that only a piece of this self-torque can be associated with radiation reaction. T…
The radial motion of a self-graviting charged dust and stability condition of the static charged dust spheres are considered. The stability is possible for the bound states of the weakly charged layer with abnormal charge with respect to the active mass.
We explore a class of compact charged spheres made of a charged perfect fluid with a polytropic equation of state. The charge density is chosen to be proportional to the energy density. The study is performed by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation which describes the hydrostatic equilibrium. We show the dependence of the structure of the spheres for several characteristic values of the polytropic exponent and for different values of the charge densities. We also study other physical properties of the charged spheres, such as the total mass, total charge, radius and sound spee…
We show that Guilfoyle's exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for spherical symmetric static electrically charged matter with a Reissner-Nordström exterior possess a bewildering plethora of different types of solutions. For the parameter space of the solutions we use two normalized variables, $q^2/R^2$ and $r_0/R$, where $q$ is the total electric charge, $r_0$ is the radius of the object, and $R$ is a length representing the square root of the inverse energy density of the matter. The two other parameters, the mass $m$ and the Guilfoyle parameter $a$, both dependent on $q$, $r_0$ …
In general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter, when the gravitational potential $W^2$ and the electric potential field $ϕ$ obey a relation of the form $W^{2}= a\left(-ε\, ϕ+ b\right)^2 +c$, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are arbitrary constants, and $ε=\pm1$ (the speed of light $c$ and Newton's constant $G$ are put to one), a class of very interesting electrically charged systems with pressure arises. We call the relation above between $W$ and $ϕ$, the Weyl-Guilfoyle relation, and it generalizes the usual Weyl relation, for which $a=1$. For both, Weyl and Weyl-Guilfoyl…
In this paper, we extend the study of the relationship between the photon sphere and the thermodynamic phase transition, especially the reentrant phase transition, to this black hole background. According to the number of the thermodynamic critical points, the black hole systems are divided into four cases with different values of Born-Infeld parameter b, where the black hole systems can have no phase transition, reentrant phase transition, or Van der Waals-like phase transition. For these different cases, we obtain the corresponding phase structures in pressure-temperature diagram and tempera…
We study the relationship between the null geodesics and thermodynamic phase transition for the charged AdS black hole. In the reduced parameter space, we find that there exist non-monotonic behaviors of the photon sphere radius and the minimum impact parameter for the pressure below its critical value. The study also shows that the changes of the photon sphere radius and the minimum impact parameter can serve as order parameters for the small-large black hole phase transition. In particular, these changes have an universal exponent of $\frac{1}{2}$ near the critical point for any dimension $d…
