We investigate the class of root systems $R$ obtained by extending an $A_1$-type irreducible root system by a free abelian group $G$. In this context there is a Weyl group $W$ and a group $U$ with the presentation by conjugation. Both groups are reflection groups with respect to a discrete symmetric space $T$ associated to $R$. We show that the natural homomorphism $U\to W$ is an isomorphism if and only if an associated subset $T^{ab}\setminus\{0\}$ of $G_2=G/2G$ is 2-independent, i.e. its image under the map $G_2\to G_2\otimes G_2, g\mapsto g\otimes g$ is linearly independent over the Galois field $F_2$.
We follow the dual approach to Coxeter systems and show for Weyl groups a criterium which decides whether a set of reflections is generating the group depending on the root and the coroot lattice. Further we study special generating sets involving a parabolic subgroup and show that they are very tame.
We investigate which Weyl groups have a Coxeter presentation and which of them at least have the presentation by conjugation with respect to their root system. For most concepts of root systems the Weyl group has both. In the context of extended affine root systems (EARS) there is a small subclass allowing a Coxeter presentation of the Weyl group and a larger subclass allowing the presentation by conjugation. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for both classes. Our results entail that every extended affine Weyl group (EAWeG) has the presentation by conjugation with respect to a suitab…
We prove that Moufang sets with abelian root groups arising at infinity of a locally finite tree all come from rank one simple algebraic groups over local fields.
We investigate the class of root systems R obtained by extending an irreducible root system by a torsion-free group G. In this context there is a Weyl group W and a group U with the presentation by conjugation. We show under additional hypotheses that the kernel of the natural homomorphism from U to W is isomorphic to the kernel of the homomorphism from the abelianization of U to that of W. For this we introduce the concept of a symmetric system, a discrete version of the concept of a symmetric space. Mathematics Subject Classification 2000: 20F55, 17B65, 17B67, 22E65, 22E40. We adapt the generalization of root systems of the second author and H. Yamane to the terminology of category theory. We introduce Cartan schemes, associated root systems and Weyl groupoids. After some preliminary general results, we completely classify all finite Weyl groupoids with at most three objects. The classification yields that there exist infinitely many standard, but only 9 exceptional cases. Key words: Nichols algebra, reflection, root system, Weyl groupoid
We continue our study of Cartan schemes and their Weyl groupoids. The results in this paper provide an algorithm to determine connected simply connected Cartan schemes of rank three, where the real roots form a finite irreducible root system. The algorithm terminates: Up to equivalence there are exactly 55 such Cartan schemes, and the number of corresponding real roots varies between 6 and 37. We identify those Weyl groupoids which appear in the classification of Nichols algebras of diagonal type.
We classify closed abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of any compact classical simple Lie algebra whose centralizer has the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup, and describe Weyl groups of maximal abelian subgroups.
T. De Medts, Y. Segev and K. Tent [Special Moufang sets, their root groups and their μ-maps, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 96 (2008), 767-791] proved that the little projective group of a special Moufang set M(U,τ) is perfect provided that U has size at least 4. We give a short, elementary and self-contained argument when U is abelian, working with Timmesfeld's concept of special (abstract) rank one groups with abelian unipotent subgroups [Abstract root subgroups and simple groups of Lie type, Monographs in Mathematics, 95. Birkhäuser, 2001]. This simplifies Timmesfeld's (quasi) simplicity criter…
We classify closed abelian subgroups of a compact simple Lie group of adjoint type and of type E having centralizer of the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup and describe Weyl groups of maximal abelian subgroups.
We show that every countable non-abelian free group $Γ$ admits a spherically transitive action on a rooted tree $T$ such that the action of $Γ$ on the boundary of $T$ is not essentially free. This reproves a result of Bergeron and Gaboriau. The existence of such an action answers a question of Grigorchuk, Nekrashevich and Sushchanskii.
Oshima's Lemma describes the orbits of parabolic subgroups of irreducible finite Weyl groups on crystallographic root systems. This note generalises that result to all root systems of finite Coxeter groups, and provides a self contained proof, independent of the representation theory of semisimple complex Lie algebras.
In this note we give a classification of the Maximal order Abelian subgroups of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. We also prove a Weyl group analogue of Cartan's theorem that all maximal tori in a connected compact Lie group are conjugate.
Let W be a Weyl group, presented as a crystallographic reflection group on a Euclidean vector space V, and C an open Weyl chamber. In a recent paper, Waldspurger proved that the images (id-w)(C), for Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is the closed cone spanned by the positive roots. We show that similarly, if A is the Weyl alcove, the images (id-w)(A), for affine Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is V.
We discuss the classification of reflection subgroups of finite and affine Weyl groups from the point of view of their root systems. A short case free proof is given of the well known classification of the isomorphism classes of reflection subgroups using completed Dynkin diagrams, for which there seems to be no convenient source in the literature. This is used as a basis for treating the affine case, where finer classifications of reflection subgroups are given, and combinatorial aspects of root systems are shown to appear. Various parameter sets for certain types of subsets of roots are inte…
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a Dynkin diagram and let $Π=\{α_1,\dots ,α_{\ell}\}$ be the simple roots of the corresponding Kac--Moody root system. Let $\mathfrak{h}$ denote the Cartan subalgebra, let $W$ denote the Weyl group and let $Δ$ denote the set of all roots. The action of $W$ on $\mathfrak{h}$, and hence on $Δ$, is the discretization of the action of the Kac--Moody algebra. Understanding the orbit structure of $W$ on $Δ$ is crucial for many physical applications. We show that for $i\neq j$, the simple roots $α_i$ and $α_j$ are in the same $W$--orbit if and only if vertices $i$ and $j$ in the D…
Let C be the centralizer in a finite Weyl group of an elementary abelian 2-subgroup. We show that every complex representation of C can be realized over the field of rational numbers. The same holds for a Sylow 2-subgroup of C.
Root subgroup factorization is a refinement of triangular (or LDU) factorization. For a complex reductive Lie group, and a choice of reduced factorization of the longest Weyl group element, the forward map from root subgroup coordinates to triangular coordinates is polynomial. We show that the inverse is rational. There is an algorithm for the inverse (involving LDU factorization), and a related explicit formula for Haar measure in root subgroup coordinates. In classical cases there are preferred reduced factorizations of the longest Weyl group elements, and conjecturally in these cases there …
A $G$-grading on a complex semisimple Lie algebra $L$, where $G$ is a finite abelian group, is called quasi-good if each homogeneous component is 1-dimensional and 0 is not in the support of the grading. Analogous to classical root systems, we define a finite root system $R$ to be some subset of a finite symplectic abelian group satisfying certain axioms. There always corresponds to $R$ a semisimple Lie algebra $L(R)$ together with a quasi-good grading on it. Thus one can construct nice basis of $L(R)$ by means of finite root systems. We classify finite maximal abelian subgroups $T$ in $\Aut(L…
Let N be the set of non-negative integer numbers, T the circle group and c the cardinality of the continuum. Given an abelian group G of size at most 2^c and a countable family F of infinite subsets of G, we construct "Baire many" monomorphisms p: G --> T^c such that p(E) is dense in {y in T^c : ny=0} whenever n in N, E in F, nE={0} and {x in E: mx=g} is finite for all g in G and m such that n=mk for some k in N--{1}. We apply this result to obtain an algebraic description of countable potentially dense subsets of abelian groups, thereby making a significant progress towards a solution of a pr…
We classify the types of root systems $R$ in the rings of integers of number fields $K$ such that the Weyl group $W(R)$ lies in the group $\mathcal L(K)$ generated by ${\rm Aut} (K)$ and multiplications by the elements of $K^*$. We also classify the Weyl groups of roots systems of rank $n$ which are isomorphic to a subgroup of $\mathcal L(K)$ for a number field $K$ of degree $n$ over $\mathbb Q$.
By studying the action of the Weyl group of a simple Lie algebra on its root lattice, we construct torsion free subgroups of small and explicitly determined index in a large infinite class of Coxeter groups. One spin-off is the construction of hyperbolic manifolds of very small volume in up to 8 dimensions.
If G is a finite group and k is a field, there is a natural construction of a Hopf algebra over k associated to G, the Drinfel'd double D(G). We prove that if G is any finite real reflection group with Drinfel'd double D(G) over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic not 2, then every simple D(G)-module has Frobenius-Schur indicator +1. This generalizes the classical results for modules over the group itself. We also prove some new results about Weyl groups. In particular, we prove that any abelian subgroup is inverted by some involution. Also, if E is any elementary abelian 2-subgr…
We classify (*)-subgroups of compact Lie groups of adjoint type, and associate a twisted root system to every (*)-subgroup. We study the structure of twisted root system in several aspects: properties of the small Weyl group W_{small} and its normal subgroups W_{tiny} and W_{f}; properties of finite root datum; structure of strips of infinite roots.
As Lie algebras of compact connected Lie groups, semisimple Lie algebras have wide applications in the description of continuous symmetries of physical systems. Mathematically, semisimple Lie algebra admits a Cartan-Weyl basis of generators which consists of a Cartan subalgebra of mutually commuting generators H_I and a number of step generators E^αthat are characterized by a root space of non-degenerate one-forms α. This simple decomposition in terms of the root space allows for a complete classification of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper, we introduce the analogous concept of a Cartan…
