Let $\ell,k$ be fixed positive integers. In an earlier work, the first and third authors established a bijection between $\ell$-cores with first part equal to $k$ and $(\ell-1)$-cores with first part less than or equal to $k$. This paper gives several new interpretations of that bijection. The $\ell$-cores index minimal length coset representatives for $\widetilde{S_{\ell}} / S_{\ell}$ where $\widetilde{S_{\ell}}$ denotes the affine symmetric group and $S_{\ell}$ denotes the finite symmetric group. In this setting, the bijection has a beautiful geometric interpretation in terms of the root lattice of type $A_{\ell-1}$. We also show that the bijection has a natural description in terms of another correspondence due to Lapointe and Morse.
We study the distribution of the major index with sign on some parabolic quotients of the symmetric group, extending and generalizing simultaneously results Gessel-Simion and Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and on some special trees that we call rakes. We further consider and compute the distribution of the flag-major index on some parabolic quotients of wreath products and other related groups. All these distributions turn out to have very simple factorization formulas.
We generalize the Tamari lattice by extending the notions of $231$-avoiding permutations, noncrossing set partitions, and nonnesting set partitions to parabolic quotients of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$. We show bijectively that these three objects are equinumerous. We show how to extend these constructions to parabolic quotients of any finite Coxeter group. The main ingredient is a certain aligned condition of inversion sets; a concept which can in fact be generalized to any reduced expression of any element in any (not necessarily finite) Coxeter group.
We introduce abacus diagrams that describe minimal length coset representatives in affine Weyl groups of types B, C, and D. These abacus diagrams use a realization of the affine Weyl group of type C due to Eriksson to generalize a construction of James for the symmetric group. We also describe several combinatorial models for these parabolic quotients that generalize classical results in affine type A related to core partitions.
In this article we define an encoding for parabolic permutations that distinguishes between parabolic $231$-avoiding permutations. We prove that the componentwise order on these codes realizes the parabolic Tamari lattice, and conclude a direct and simple proof that the parabolic Tamari lattice is isomorphic to a certain $ν$-Tamari lattice, with an explicit bijection. Furthermore, we prove that this bijection is closely related to the map $Θ$ used when the lattice isomorphism was first proved in (Ceballos, Fang and Mühle, 2020), settling an open problem therein.
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…

Ordering permutations by containment of inversion sets yields a fascinating partial order on the symmetric group: the weak order. This partial order is, among other things, a semidistributive lattice. As a consequence, every permutation has a canonical representation as a join of other permutations. Combinatorially, these canonical join representations can be modeled in terms of arc diagrams. Moreover, these arc diagrams also serve as a model to understand quotient lattices of the weak order. A particularly well-behaved quotient lattice of the weak order is the well-known Tamari lattice, which…
Affine Weyl groups and their parabolic quotients are used extensively as indexing sets for objects in combinatorics, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and number theory. Moreover, in the classical Lie types we can conveniently realize the elements of these quotients via intuitive geometric and combinatorial models such as abaci, alcoves, coroot lattice points, core partitions, and bounded partitions. Berg, Jones, and Vazirani described a bijection between n-cores with first part equal to k and (n-1)-cores with first part less than or equal to k, and they interpret this bijection in te…
For integers m, n $\ge$ 1, we describe a bijection sending dissections of the (mn + 2)-regular polygon into (m + 2)-sided polygons to a new basis of the quotient of the polynomial algebra in mn variables by an ideal generated by some kind of higher quasi-symmetric functions. We show that divisibility of the basis elements corresponds to a new partial order on dissections, which is studied in some detail.
Let m and n be any integers with n>m>=2. Using just the entropy function it is possible to define a partial order on S_mn (the symmetric group on mn letters) modulo a subgroup isomorphic to S_m x S_n. We explore this partial order in the case m=2, n=3, where thanks to the outer automorphism the quotient space is actually isomorphic to a parabolic quotient of S_6. Furthermore we show that in this case it has a fairly simple algebraic description in terms of elements of the group ring.
For an ad-nilpotent ideal $i$ of a Borel subalgebra of $sl_{l+1}(C)$, we denote by $I_i$ the maximal subset $I$ of the set of simple roots such that $i$ is an ad-nilpotent ideal of the standard parabolic subalgebra $p_I$. We use the bijection given by G.E. Andrews, C. Krattenthaler, L. Orsina and P. Papi between the set of ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra in $sl_{l+1}(C)$ and the set of Dyck paths of length $2l+2$, to explicit a bijection between ad-nilpotent ideals $i$ of the Borel subalgebra such that the cardinality of $I_i$ is equal to $r$ and the Dyck paths of length $2l+2$ havin…
We classify all quotients $W/W_J$ up to isomorphism in Bruhat order, with $(W,S)$ a Coxeter system and $W_J$ a parabolic subgroup of $W$. In particular, the non-trivial isomorphisms fall into a small number of cases which are highly restricted; all have $W$ finite and $W_J$ a maximal parabolic. This has the immediate application of classifying dominant and antidominant blocks of category $\mathcal O$ for Kac-Moody algebras up to equivalence.
The main result of this work is the characterization of the covering relations of the Bruhat order of the maximal parabolic quotients of type B. Our approach is mainly combinatorial and is based in the pattern of the corresponding permutations also called signed $k$-Grassmannians permutations. We obtain that a covering relation can be classified in four different pairs of permutations. This answers a question raised by Ikeda and Matsumura providing a nice combinatorial model for maximal parabolic quotients of type B.
We continue the study of separable elements in finite Weyl groups. These elements generalize the well-studied class of separable permutations. We show that the multiplication map $W/U \times U \to W$ is a length-additive bijection, or splitting, of the Weyl group $W$ when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element; this generalizes a result for the symmetric group, answering an open problem of Wei. For a generalized quotient of the symmetric group, we show that this multiplication map is a bijection if and only if $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order genera…
The Peterson isomorphism relates the homology of the affine Grassmannian to the quantum cohomology of any flag variety. In the case of a partial flag, Peterson's map is only a surjection, and one needs to quotient by a suitable ideal on the affine side to map isomorphically onto the quantum cohomology. We provide a detailed exposition of this parabolic Peterson isomorphism in the case of the Grassmannian of m-planes in complex n-space, including an explicit recipe for doing quantum Schubert calculus in terms of the appropriate subset of non-commutative k-Schur functions. As an application, we …
A well-known result of Stanley from 1980 implies that the weak order on a maximal parabolic quotient of the symmetric group $S_n$ has the Sperner property; this same property was recently established for the weak order on all of $S_n$ by Gaetz and Gao, resolving a long-open problem. In this paper we interpolate between these results by showing that the weak order on any parabolic quotient of $S_n$ (and more generally on any $132$-avoiding interval) has the Sperner property. This result is proven by exhibiting an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ respecting the weak order on these intervals. As a cor…
We give a bijection between certain colored partitions and the elements in the quotient of an affine Weyl group modulo its Weyl group. By Bott's formula these colored partitions give rise to some partition identities. In certain types, these identities have previously appeared in the work of Bousquet-Melou-Eriksson, Eriksson-Eriksson and Reiner. In other types the identities appear to be new. For type $A_{n}$, the affine colored partitions form another family of combinatorial objects in bijection with $n+1$-core partitions and $n$-bounded partitions. Our main application is to characterize the…
Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. W…
Let C be a non-empty finite set, and Gamma a subgroup of the symmetric group S(C). Given a bijection f:A cross C to B cross C, the problem of Gamma-equivariant division is to find a quotient bijection h:A to B respecting whatever symmetries f may have under the action of S(A) cross S(B) cross Gamma. Say that Gamma is fully cancelling if this is possible for any f, and finitely cancelling if it is possible providing A,B are finite. Feldman and Propp showed that a permutation group is finitely cancelling just if it has a globally fixed point. We show here that a permutation group is fully cancel…
The following thesis contains results on the combinatorial representation theory of the finite Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$. In Chapter 2 simple combinatorial descriptions are given which determine when a Specht module corresponding to a partition $λ$ is irreducible. This is done by extending the results of James and Mathas. These descriptions depend on the crystal of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. In Chapter 3 these results are extended to determine which irreducible modules have a realization as a Specht module. To do this, a new condition of irr…
The Frobenius symbol was first introduced in 1900 by Frobenius as a way to encode an integer partition. In 1941, motivated by the modular representation theory of the symmetric group, Nakayama introduced the idea of a p-core partition, for p prime, using hook removals. In the following decade, Robinson, Littlewood, Staal and Farahat codified the $p$-quotient of such a partition, using variations of the star diagram. Since the 1970s, the convention has been to build up the theory of both core and quotients with the abacus construction, first introduced by G. James. In this paper we return to th…
