We introduce a dispersionless integrable system which interpolates between the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and the hyper-CR equation. The interpolating system arises as a symmetry reduction of the anti--self--dual Einstein equations in (2, 2) signature by a conformal Killing vector whose self--dual derivative is null. It also arises as a special case of the Manakov-Santini integrable system. We discuss the corresponding Einstein--Weyl structures.
A dispersionless integrable system underlying 2+1-dimensional hyperCR Einstein--Weyl structures is obtained as a symmetry reduction of the anti--self--dual Yang--Mills equations with the gauge group Diff$(S^1)$. Two special classes of solutions are obtained from well known soliton equations by embedding SU(1,1) in ${Diff}(S^1)$.
We develop the theory of Whitham type hierarchies integrable by hydrodynamic reductions as a theory of certain differential-geometric objects. As an application we construct Gibbons-Tsarev systems associated to moduli space of algebraic curves of arbitrary genus and prove that the universal Whitham hierarchy is integrable by hydrodynamic reductions.
We derive a dispersionless integrable system describing a local form of a general three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry with an Euclidean (positive) signature, construct its matrix extension and demonstrate that it leads to the Bogomolny equations for a non-abelian monopole on an Einstein-Weyl geometry background. The corresponding dispersionless integrable hierarchy, its matrix extension and the dressing scheme are also considered.
Nonlinear dispersionless equations arise as the dispersionless limit of well know integrable hierarchies of equations or by construction, such as the system of hydrodynamic type. Some of these equations are integrable in the Hamiltonian sense and appear in the study of topological minimal models. In the first part of the review we will give a brief introduction to integrable models, mainly its Lax representation. Then, we will introduce the dispersionless limit and show some of our results concerning the two-component hyperbolic system of equations such as the polytropic gas and Born-Infeld eq…
The general framework for integrable discrete systems on R in particular containing lattice soliton systems and their q-deformed analogues is presented. The concept of regular grain structures on R, generated by discrete one-parameter groups of diffeomorphisms, through which one can define algebras of shift operators is introduced. Two integrable hierarchies of discrete chains together with bi-Hamiltonian structures are constructed. Their continuous limit and the inverse problem based on the deformation quantization scheme are considered.
This paper is a continuation of our previous work in which we studied a dispersionless limits of some integrable spin systems (magnetic equations). Now, we shall present dispersionless limits of some integrable generalized Heisenberg ferromagnet equations.
We introduce a general setting for multidimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy in terms of differential $m$-form $Ω_m$ with the coefficients satisfying the Plücker relations, which is gauge-invariantly closed and its gauge-invariant coordinates (ratios of coefficients) are (locally) holomorphic with respect to one of the variables (the spectral variable). We demonstrate that this form defines a hierarchy of dispersionless integrable equations in terms of commuting vector fields locally holomorphic in the spectral variable. The equations of the hierarchy are given by the gauge-invarian…
The standard binary Darboux transformation is investigated and is used to obtain quasi-Grammian multisoliton solutions of the generalized coupled dispersionless integrable system.
An integrable dispersionless KdV hierarchy with sources (dKdVHWS) is derived. Lax pair equations and bi-Hamiltonian formulation for dKdVHWS are formulated. Hodograph solution for the dispersionless KdV equation with sources (dKdVWS) is obtained via hodograph transformation. Furthermore, the dispersionless Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with sources (dGDHWS) is presented.
We present a simple novel construction of recursion operators for integrable multidimensional dispersionless systems that admit a Lax pair whose operators are linear in the spectral parameter and do not involve the derivatives with respect to the latter. New examples of recursion operators obtained using our technique include {\em inter alia} those for the general heavenly equation, which describes a class of anti-self-dual solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, and a six-dimensional equation resulting from a system of Ferapontov and Khusnutdinova.
We consistently develop a recently proposed scheme of matrix extension of dispersionless integrable systems for the general case of multidimensional hierarchies, concentrating on the case of dimension $d\geqslant 4$. We present extended Lax pairs, Lax-Sato equations, matrix equations on the background of vector fields and the dressing scheme. Reductions, construction of solutions and connections to geometry are discussed. We consider separately a case of Abelian extension, for which the Riemann-Hilbert equations of the dressing scheme are explicitly solvable and give an analogue of Penrose for…
For several classes of second order dispersionless PDEs, we show that the symbols of their formal linearizations define conformal structures which must be Einstein-Weyl in 3D (or self-dual in 4D) if and only if the PDE is integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. This demonstrates that the integrability of these dispersionless PDEs can be seen from the geometry of their formal linearizations.
Symmetry constraints for (2+1)-dimensional dispersionless integrable equations are considered. It is demonstrated that they naturally lead to systems of hydrodynamic type which arise within the reduction method. One also easily obtaines an associated complex curve (Sato function) and corresponding generating equations. Dispersionless KP and 2DTL hierarchy are considered as illustrative examples.
We discuss the origin of the associativity (WDVV) equations in the context of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The associativity equations are shown to be encoded in the dispersionless limit of the Hirota equations for KP and Toda hierarchies. We show, therefore, that any tau-function of dispersionless KP or Toda hierarchy provides a solution to associativity equations. In general, they depend on infinitely many variables. We also discuss the particular solution to the dispersionless Toda hierarchy that describes conformal mappings and construct a family of new solutions to the WDVV equa…
The quasi-classical $\bar{\partial}$-dressing method is used to derive compact generating equations for dispersionless hierarchies. Dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and two-dimensional Toda lattice (2DTL) hierarchies are considered as illustrative examples.
Interpretation of dispersionless integrable hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for certain algebras and other algebraic structures like Jordan triple systInterpretation of dispersionless integrable hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for certain algebras and other algebraic structures like Jordan triple systems is discussed. Several generalizations are considered. Stationary reductions of the dispersionless integrable equations are shown to be connected with the dynamical systems on the plane completely integrable on a fixed energy level. ems is discussed. Se…
This is a write-up of the lectures on dispersionless equations in 1+1, 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions presented by one of us (RM) at "Eurasian International Center for Theoretical Physics" (EICTP). We provide pedagogical introduction to the subject and summarize well-known results and some recent developments in theory of integrable dispersionless equations. Almost all results presented are available in the literatures. We just add some new results related to dispersionless limits of integrable magnetic equations. On the contrary, some of the basic tools of the integrable dispersionless systems and re…
In the present paper we introduce a multi-dimensional version of the R-matrix approach to the construction of integrable hierarchies. Applying this method to the case of the Lie algebra of functions with respect to the contact bracket, we construct integrable hierarchies of (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems of the type recently introduced by one of us in arXiv:1401.2122.
Using diffeomorphism group vector fields on $\mathbb{C}$-multiplied tori and the related Lie-algebraic structures, we study multi-dimensional dispersionless integrable systems that describe conformal structure generating equations of mathematical physics. An interesting modification of the devised Lie-algebraic approach subject to spatial-dimensional invariance and meromorphicity of the related differential-geometric structures is described and applied in proving complete integrability of some conformal structure generating equations. As examples, we analyze the Einstein-Weyl metric equation, …
We demonstrate that hydrodynamic reductions of dispersionless integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions, such as the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and dispersionless Toda lattice (dTl) equations, can be deformed into reductions of the corresponding dispersive counterparts. Modulo the Miura group, such deformations are unique. The requirement that any hydrodynamic reduction possesses a deformation of this kind imposes strong constraints on the structure of dispersive terms, suggesting an alternative approach to the integrability in 2+1 dimensions.
We show that one-variable reductions of the Pfaff-Toda integrable hierarchy in the dispersionless limit are described by a system of coupled elliptic Löwner (Komatu-Goluzin) equations.
We apply the theory of Lie point symmetries for the study of a family of partial differential equations which are integrable by the hyperbolic reductions method and are reduced to members of the Painlevé transcendents. The main results of this study is that from the application of the similarity transformations provided by the Lie point symmetries all the members of the family of the partial differential equations are reduced to second-order differential equations which are maximal symmetric and can be linearized.
Analogues of the KP and the Toda lattice hierarchy called dispersionless KP and Toda hierarchy are studied. Dressing operations in the dispersionless hierarchies are introduced as a canonical transformation, quantization of which is dressing operators of the ordinary KP and Toda hierarchy. An alternative construction of general solutions of the ordinary KP and Toda hierarchy is given as twistor construction which is quatization of the similar construction of solutions of dispersionless hierarchies. These results as well as those obtained in previous papers are presented with proofs and necessa…
It is well-known that the partition function of the unitary ensembles of random matrices is given by a tau-function of the Toda lattice hierarchy and those of the orthogonal and symplectic ensembles are tau-functions of the Pfaff lattice hierarchy. In these cases the asymptotic expansions of the free energies given by the logarithm of the partition functions lead to the dispersionless (i.e. continuous) limits for the Toda and Pfaff lattice hierarchies. There is a universality between all three ensembles of random matrices, one consequence of which is that the leading orders of the free energy …
We classify integrable third order equations in 2+1 dimensions which generalize the examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Veselov-Novikov and Harry Dym equations. Our approach is based on the observation that dispersionless limits of integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions possess infinitely many multi-phase solutions coming from the so-called hydrodynamic reductions. %Conversely, the requirement of the existence of hydrodynamic reductions proves to be an efficient classification criterion. In this paper we adopt a novel perturbative approach to the classification problem. Based on the method of hy…
The relation between the infinite-dimensional 3-algebras and the dispersionless KdV hierarchy is investigated. Based on the infinite-dimensional 3-algebras, we derive two compatible Nambu Hamiltonian structures. Then the dispersionless KdV hierarchy follows from the Nambu-Poisson evolution equation given the suitable Hamiltonians. We find that the dispersionless KdV system is not only a bi-Hamiltonian system, but also a bi-Nambu-Hamiltonian system. Due to the Nambu-Poisson evolution equation involving two Hamiltonians, more intriguing relationships between these Hamiltonians are revealed. As a…
We give a simple proof that the Neumann coefficients of surface states in Witten's SFT satisfy the Hirota equations for dispersionless KP hierarchy. In a similar way we show that the Neumann coefficients for the three string vertex in the same theory obey the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy. We conjecture that the full (dispersive) Toda Lattice hierachy and, even more attractively a two--matrix model, may underlie open SFT.
We present a new approach to construction of recursion operators for multidimensional integrable systems which have a Lax-type representation in terms of a pair of commuting vector fields. It is illustrated by the examples of the Manakov--Santini system which is a hyperbolic system in N dependent and N + 4 independent variables, where N is an arbitrary natural number, the six-dimensional generalization of the first heavenly equation, the modified heavenly equation, and the dispersionless Hirota equation.
We show that conformal maps of simply connected domains with an analytic boundary to a unit disk have an intimate relation to the dispersionless 2D Toda integrable hierarchy. The maps are determined by a particular solution to the hierarchy singled out by the conditions known as "string equations". The same hierarchy locally solves the 2D inverse potential problem, i.e. reconstruction of the domain out of a set of its harmonic moments. This is the same solution which is known to describe 2D gravity coupled to c=1 matter. We also introduce a concept of the $τ$-function for analytic curves.
A higher dimensional analogue of the dispersionless KP hierarchy is introduced. In addition to the two-dimensional ``phase space'' variables $(k,x)$ of the dispersionless KP hierarchy, this hierarchy has extra spatial dimensions compactified to a two (or any even) dimensional torus. Integrability of this hierarchy and the existence of an infinite dimensional of ``additional symmetries'' are ensured by an underlying twistor theoretical structure (or a nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem). An analogue of the tau function, whose logarithm gives the $F$ function (``free energy'' or ``prepotential'' …
The quasi-classical limit of the scalar nonlocal dbar-problem is derived and a quasi-classical version of the dbar-dressing method is presented. Dispersionless KP, mKP and 2DTL hierarchies are discussed as illustrative examples. It is shown that the universal Whitham hierarchy it is nothing but the ring of symmetries for the quasi-classical dbar-problem. The reduction problem is discussed and, in particular, the d2DTL equation of B type is derived.
We review the recent approach to the construction of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless partial differential systems based on their contact Lax pairs and the related $R$-matrix theory for the Lie algebra of functions with respect to the contact bracket. We discuss various kinds of Lax representations for such systems, in particular, linear nonisospectral contact Lax pairs and nonlinear contact Lax pairs as well as the relations among the two. Finally, we present a large number of examples with finite and infinite number of dependent variables, as well as the reductions of these exampl…
The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are, within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions …
In the present paper, we study the Myrzakulov-XIII (M-XIII) equation geometrically. From the geometric point of view, we establish a link of the M-XIII equation with the motion of space curves in the 3-dimensional space $R^{3}$. We also show that the complex coupled dispersionless (CCD) equation can be derived from the geometrical formalism such that their curve flows are formulated. Finally, the gauge equivalence between the M-XIII equation and the CCD equation is established.
An integrable semi-discretization of complex and multi-component coupled dispersionless systems via Lax pairs is presented. A Lax pair is proposed for the complex sdCD system. We derive the Lax pair for the multi-component sdCD system through generalizing the $2 \times 2$ Lax matrices to the case of $2^{N} \times 2^{N}$ Lax matrices. A Darboux transformation (DT) is applied to the complex and multi-component sdCD systems and is used to compute soliton solutions of the systems. It is also shown that the soliton solutions of the semi-discrete systems reduce to the continuous systems by applying …
The (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy and nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the Doubrov-Ferapontov modified heavenly equation
We introduce a novel systematic construction for integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems using nonisospectral Lax pairs that involve contact vector fields. In particular, we present new large classes of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless systems associated to the Lax pairs which are polynomial and rational in the spectral parameter.
We review some results about the theory of integrable dispersionless PDEs arising as commutation condition of pairs of one-parameter families of vector fields, developed by the authors during the last years. We review, in particular, the formal aspects of a novel Inverse Spectral Transform including, as inverse problem, a nonlinear Riemann - Hilbert (NRH) problem, allowing one i) to solve the Cauchy problem for the target PDE; ii) to construct classes of RH spectral data for which the NRH problem is exactly solvable; iii) to construct the longtime behavior of the solutions of such PDE; iv) to …
Veronese webs are closely related to bi-Hamiltonian systems, as was shown by Gelfand and Zakharevich. Recently a correspondence between Veronese three-dimensional webs and three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl structures of hyper-CR type was established. The latter were parametrized by Dunajski and Krynski via the solutions of the dispersionless Hirota equation. In this paper we show relations of Veronese three-dimensional webs to several other integrable equations, deform these equations preserving integrability via a dispersionless Lax pair and compute the corresponding contact symmetries, Backlun…
The equations of Loewner type can be derived in two very different contexts: one of them is complex analysis and the theory of parametric conformal maps and the other one is the theory of integrable systems. In this paper we compare the both approaches. After recalling the derivation of Löwner equations based on complex analysis we review one- and multi-variable reductions of dispersionless integrable hierarhies (dKP, dBKP, dToda, and dDKP). The one-vaiable reductions are described by solutions of different versions of Loewner equation: chordal (rational) for dKP, quadrant for dBKP, radial (tr…
A (d+1)-dimensional dispersionless PDE is said to be integrable if its n-component hydrodynamic reductions are locally parametrized by (d-1)n arbitrary functions of one variable. Given a PDE which does not pass the integrability test, the method of hydrodynamic reductions allows one to effectively reconstruct additional differential constraints which, when added to the equation, make it an integrable system in fewer dimensions (if consistent).
Paraconformal or $GL(2)$ geometry on an $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ is defined by a field of rational normal curves of degree $n-1$ in the projectivised cotangent bundle $\mathbb{P} T^*M$. Such geometry is known to arise on solution spaces of ODEs with vanishing Wünschmann (Doubrov-Wilczynski) invariants. In this paper we discuss yet another natural source of $GL(2)$ structures, namely dispersionless integrable hierarchies of PDEs (for instance the dKP hierarchy). In the latter context, $GL(2)$ structures coincide with the characteristic variety (principal symbol) of the hierarchy. Dispersion…
It is shown that the dispersionless scalar integrable hierarchies and, in general, the universal Whitham hierarchy are nothing but classes of integrable deformations of quasiconformal mappings on the plane. Examples of deformations of quasiconformal mappings associated with explicit solutions of the dispersionless KP hierarchy are presented.
We consider dispersionless Lax systems and present a new systematic method of deriving new integrable systems from a given one. We provide examples that include: the dispersionless Hirota equation, the general heavenly equation and the web equations.
We consider two-component integrable generalizations of the dispersionless 2DTL hierarchy connected with non-Hamiltonian vector fields, similar to the Manakov-Santini hierarchy generalizing the dKP hierarchy. They form a one-parametric family connected by hodograph type transformations. Generating equations and Lax-Sato equations are introduced, a dressing scheme based on the vector nonlinear Riemann problem is formulated. The simplest two-component generalization of the dispersionless 2DTL equation is derived, its differential reduction analogous to the Dunajski interpolating system is presen…
We use deformations of Lie algebra homomorphisms to construct deformations of dispersionless integrable systems arising as symmetry reductions of anti--self--dual Yang--Mills equations with a gauge group Diff$(S^1)$.
We review the notion of differential Fay identities and demonstrate, through case studies, its new role in integrable hierarchies of the KP type. These identities are known to be a convenient tool for deriving dispersionless Hirota equations. We show that differential (or, in the case of the Toda hierarchy, difference) Fay identities play a more fundamental role. Namely, they are nothing but a generating functional expression of the full set of auxiliary linear equations, hence substantially equivalent to the integrable hierarchies themselves. These results are illustrated for the KP, Toda, BK…
This paper is devoted to the classification of integrable Davey-Stewartson type equations. A list of potentially deformable dispersionless systems is obtained through the requirement that such systems must be generated by a polynomial dispersionless Lax pair. A perturbative approach based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions is employed to recover the integrable systems along with their Lax pairs. Some of the found systems seem to be new.
It has been shown that the dispersionless KP hierarchy (or the Benney hierarchy) is reduced to the chordal Löwner equation. We show that the radial Löwner equation also gives reduction of a dispersionless type integrable system. The resulting system acquires another degree of freedom and becomes the dcmKP hierarchy, which is a ``half'' of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. The results of this article was announced in nlin.SI/0512008.
Integrable dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy of B type is considered. Addition formula for the $τ$-function and conformally invariant equations for the dispersionless BKP (dBKP) hierarchy are derived. Symmetry constraints for the dBKP hierarchy are studied.
We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory for the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation, where the weight is allowed to be a finite signed measure. In particular, we prove that this weight is uniquely determined by the spectral data and solve the inverse spectral problem for the class of measures which are sign definite. The results are applied to deduce several facts for the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation. In particular, we show that initial conditions with integrable momentum asymptotically split into a sum of peakons as conjectured by McKean.
