In this paper, we find the teleparallel version of the Levi-Civita metric and obtain tetrad and the torsion fields. The tensor, vector and the axial-vector parts of the torsion tensor are evaluated. It is found that the vector part lies along the radial direction only while the axial-vector vanishes everywhere because the metric is diagonal. Further, we use the teleparallel version of M$\ddot{o}$ller, Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz and Bergmann-Thomson prescriptions to find the energy-momentum distribution of this metric and compare the results with those already found in General Relativity. It is worth mentioning here that momentum is constant in both the theories for all the prescriptions. The energy in teleparallel theory is equal to the corresponding energy in GR only in M$\ddot{o}$ller prescription for the remaining prescriptions, the energy do not agree in both theories. We also conclude that M$\ddot{o}$ller's energy-momentum distribution is independent of the coupling constant $λ$ in the teleparallel theory.
Levi-Civita spacetimes have both classical and quantum singularities. The relationship between the two is used here to study and clarify the physical aspects of the enigmatic Levi-Civita spacetimes.
It is shown that the Levi-Civita metric can be obtained from a family of the Weyl metric, the Gamma metric, by taking the limit when the length of its Newtonian image source tends to infinity. In this process a relationship appears between two fundamental parameters of both metrics.
The angular deficit factor in the Levi-Civita vacuum metric has been parametrized using a Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. This introduces a new parameter into the general relativistic cylinder description, the fractional index α. When the fractional index is continued into the negative α region, new behavior is found in the Gott-Hiscock cylinder and in an Israel shell.
We obtain the most general static cylindrically symmetric vacuum solutions of the Einstein field equations in $(4 + N)$ dimensions. Under the assumption of separation of variables, we construct a family of Levi-Civita-Kasner vacuum solutions in $(4 + N)$. We discuss the dimensional reduction of the static solutions. Depending on the reduction procedure, they can be interpreted either as a scalar-vacuum generalization of Levi-Civita spacetimes, or as the effective 4D vacuum spacetime outside of an idealized string in braneworld theory.
We investigate some cylindrically symmetric nonstationary and nonstatic solutions of Einstein field equations. We first study some physical properties of a solution which can be considered as Kasner generalization of static Levi-Civita vacuum solution. Then we generalize this metric to include a solution where a space-time filled with null dust or a stiff fluid.
We show how a Metric Affine theory of Dilaton gravity can be reduced to an effective Riemannian Dilaton gravity model. A simple generalization of the Obukhov-Tucker-Wang theorem to Dilaton gravity is then presented.
The method based on the Horsky-Mitskievitch conjecture is applied to the Levi-Civita vacuum metric. It is shown, that every Killing vector is connected with a particular class of Einstein-Maxwell fields and each of those classes is found explicitly. Some of obtained classes are quite new. Radial geodesic motion in constructed space-times is discussed and graphically illustrated in the Appendix.
This paper is devoted to compute the energy-momentum densities for two exact solutions of the Einstein field equations by using the prescriptions of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Möller. The spacetimes under consideration are the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou and the Levi-Civita metrics. The Weyl metric becomes the special case of the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou solution. The Levi-Civita metric provides constant momentum in each prescription with different energy density. The Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou metric yields all the quantities different in each prescription. These differences support the well…
Quantum singularities in general relativistic spacetimes are determined by the behavior of quantum test particles. A static spacetime is quantum mechanically singular if the spatial portion of the wave operator is not essentially self-adjoint. Here Weyl's limit point-limit circle criterion is used to determine whether a wave operator is essentially self-adjoint. This test is then applied to scalar wave packets in Levi-Civita spacetimes to help elucidate the physical properties of the spacetimes in terms of their metric parameters.
The Levi-Civita (LC) solution is matched to a cylindrical shell of an anisotropic fluid. The fluid satisfies the energy conditions when the mass parameter $σ$ is in the range $0 \le σ\le 1$. The mass per unit length of the shell is given explicitly in terms of $σ$, which has a finite maximum. The relevance of the results to the non-existence of horizons in the LC solution and to gauge cosmic strings is pointed out.
The main properties of the Levi-Civita solutions with the cosmological constant are studied. In particular, it is found that some of the solutions need to be extended beyond certain hypersurfaces in order to have geodesically complete spacetimes. Some extensions are considered and found to give rise to black hole structure but with plane symmetry. All the spacetimes that are not geodesically complete are Petrov type D, while in general the spacetimes are Petrov type I.
We study Levi-Civita metric for values of its sigma parameter in the range 0< sigma<infinity. We show that the value sigma=1/2 makes the axial and angular coordinates switch meaning. We present its geodesics and a physical source satisfying the energy conditions for all the range of sigma. This source allows us to obtain an energy per unit length which agrees with the behaviour of the geodesics and the fact that the solution has no event horizon.
Levi-Civita spacetimes have classical naked singularities. They also have quantum singularities. Quantum singularities in general relativistic spacetimes are determined by the behavior of quantum test particles. A static spacetime is said to be quantum mechanically singular if the spatial portion of the wave operator is not essentially self-adjoint on a $C_{0}^{\infty}$ domain in $L^{2}$, a Hilbert space of square integrable functions. Here we summarize how Weyl's limit point-limit circle criterion can be used to determine whether a wave operator is essentially self-adjoint and how this test c…
When a static cylindrical system is subjected to equal and opposite torques top and bottom it transports angular momentum along its axis. The external metric of this static system can be transformed to Levi-Civita's form by using helical coordinates. This gives the external metric of a static cylinder three dimensionless parameters corresponding to the mass per unit length, the total stress along the cylinder, and the total torque. The external vacuum metric of a spherical system is characterised by its mass alone. How many parameters characterise the external metric of a general stationary cy…
In the years 1917-1919 Tullio Levi-Civita published a number of papers presenting new solutions to Einstein's equations. This work, while partially translated, remains largely inaccessible to English speaking authors. In this paper we review these solutions, and present them in a modern, readable manner. We will also compute both Cartan-Karlhede and Carminati-Mclenaghan invariants such that these solutions are invariantly characterized by two distinct methods. These methods will allow for these solutions to be totally, and invariantly characterized. Because of the variety of solutions consider…
We consider two exact solutions of Einstein's field equations corresponding to a cylinder of dust with net zero angular momentum. In one of the cases, the dust distribution is homogeneous, whereas in the other, the angular velocity of dust particles is constant [1]. For both solutions we studied the junction conditions to the exterior static vacuum Levi-Civita spacetime. From this study we find an upper limit for the energy density per unit length $σ$ of the source equal ${1\over 2}$ for the first case and ${1\over 4}$ for the second one. Thus the homogeneous cluster provides another example […
We revisit the interpretation of the cylindrically symmetric, static vacuum Levi-Civita metric, known in either Weyl, Einstein-Rosen, or Kasner-like coordinates. Despite the infinite axis source, we derive its Komar mass density through a compactification and subsequent blowing up of the compactification radius. We show that, the Komar mass density $μ_K$ calculated in the Einstein-Rosen frame, when employed as the metric parameter, has a number of advantages. It eliminates double coverages of the parameter space, vanishes in flat spacetime and when small, it corresponds to the mass density of …
In the context of extended theories of teleparallel gravity $f(T)$ we derive the focusing conditions for a one-parameter dependent congruence of timelike auto-parallels of the Levi-Civita connection. We also consider the $f(T)$ field equations for a general metric tensor before moving on to consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker space-time. Following this, we study the expansion rate for a one-parameter dependent congruence of timelike auto-parallel curves of the Levi-Civita connection. Given the fact that test particles follow auto-parallels of the Levi-Civita connection, the torsion-free…
The diagonal metric tensor whose components are functions of one spatial coordinate is considered. Einstein's field equations for a perfect-fluid source are reduced to quadratures once a generating function, equal to the product of two of the metric components, is chosen. The solutions are either static fluid cylinders or walls depending on whether or not one of the spatial coordinates is periodic. Cylinder and wall sources are generated and matched to the vacuum (Levi--Civita) space--time. A match to a cylinder source is achieved for $-\frac{1}{2}<\si<\frac{1}{2}$, where $\si$ is the mass per…
Applying the Pomeransky inverse scattering method to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation and using the Levi-Civita solution for a seed, we construct a cylindrically symmetric single-soliton solution. Although the Levi-Civita spacetime generally includes singularities on its axis of symmetry, it is shown that for the obtained single-soliton solution, such singularities can be removed by choice of certain special parameters. This single-soliton solution describes propagation of nonlinear cylindrical gravitational shock wave pulses rather than solitonic waves. By analyzing wave amplitud…
A conformally flat accelerated charge metric is found in an arbitrary dimension $D$. It is a solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-null fluid with a cosmological constant in $D \ge 4$ dimensions. When the acceleration is zero our solution reduces to the Levi-Civita-Bertotti-Robinson metric. We show that the charge loses its energy, for all dimensions, due to the acceleration.
The local and global properties of the Levi-Civita (LC) solutions coupled with an electromagnetic field are studied and some limits to the vacuum LC solutions are given. By doing such limits, the physical and geometrical interpretations of the free parameters involved in the solutions are made clear. Sources for both the LC vacuum solutions and the LC solutions coupled with an electromagnetic field are studied, and in particular it is found that all the LC vacuum solutions with $σ\ge 0$ can be produced by cylindrically symmetric thin shells that satisfy all the energy conditions, weak, dominan…
The n-body problem is one of the most important issue in Celestial Mechanics. This article aims to retrace the historical and scientific events that led the Paduan mathematician, Tullio Levi-Civita, to deal with the problem first from a classic and then a relativistic point of view. We describe Levi-Civita's contributions to the theory of relativity focusing on his epistolary exchanges with Einstein, on the problem of secular acceleration and on the proof of Brillouin's cancellation principle. We also point out that the themes treated by Levi-Civita are very topical. Specifically, we analyse h…
We find a class of solutions to cosmological Einstein equations that generalizes the four dimensional cylindrically symmetric spacetimes to higher dimensions. The AdS soliton is a special member of this class with a unique singularity structure.
Radial steady-state accretion of polytropic matter is investigated under cylindrical symmetry in the Levi-Civita background metric. The model can be considered as a cylindrical analog of Bondi accretion in strong gravitational field. As a byproduct of this study, the issue of defining the line mass density is addressed and the role of the metric free parameters is discussed on the example of physical observables. The form of radial accretion equations is insensitive to the structure of the interior solution. Accordingly, the accretion solution analysis can be limited to a special Wilson form o…
The Levi-Civita Bertotti Robinson (LBR) spacetime is investigated in various coordinate systems. By means of a general formalism for constructing coordinates in conformally flat spacetimes, coordinate transformations between the different coordinate systems are deduced. We discuss the motion of the reference frames in which the different coordinate systems are comoving. Furthermore we characterize the motion of the different reference frames by their normalized timelike Killing vector fields, i.e. by the four velocity fields of the reference particles. We also deduce the formulae in the differ…
We define the concept of Levi Civita truncation for a Lagrangian in the Palatini formulation with an arbitrary connection, and show that its consistency uniquely identifies the Lovelock Lagrangians.
In this letter we obtain an exact solution for cylindrically symmetric modified Gauss Bonnet gravity. This metric is a generalization of the vacuum solution of the Levi-Civita in the general relativity. It describes an isotropic perfect fluid one parameter family of the gravitational configurations which can be interpreted as the exterior metric of a cosmic string. By setting the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter to zero, we recover the vacuum solution in the Einstein gravity as well.
The mathematical relations between certain classical Non-Riemannian gravity models and Einstein-Proca theories are discussed in details. We also show some relations with theories with scalar fields.
Applying the Pomeransky inverse scattering method to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations and using the Levi-Civita solution as a seed, we construct a two-soliton solution with cylindrical symmetry. In our previous work, we constructed the one-soliton solution with a real pole and showed that the singularities that the Levi-Civita background has on an axis can be removed by the choice of certain special parameters, but it still has unavoidable null singularities, as usual one-solitons do. In this work, we show that for the two-soliton solutions, any singularities can be removed by su…
This paper discusses the extent to which one can determine the space-time metric from a knowledge of a certain subset of the (unparametrised) geodesics of its Levi-Civita connection, that is, from the experimental evidence of the equivalence principle. It is shown that, if the space-time concerned is known to be vacuum, then the Levi-Civita connection is uniquely determined and its associated metric is uniquely determined up to a choice of units of measurement, by the specification of these geodesics. It is further demonstrated that if two space-times share the same unparametrised geodesics an…
We have recently found that the gravitational field of a static spherical mass removes the Landau degeneracy of the energy levels of a particle moving around the mass inside a magnetic field by splitting the energy of the Landau orbitals. In this paper we present the second part of our investigation of the effect of gravity on Landau levels. We examine the effect of the gravitational fields created by an infinitely long massive cylinder and a rotating spherical mass. In both cases, we show that the degeneracy is again removed thanks to the splitting of the particle's orbitals. The first case w…
We analyse the most general connection allowed by Einstein-Hilbert theory in Palatini formalism. We also consider a matter lagrangian independent of the affine connection. We show that any solution of the equation of the connection is essentially Levi-Civita up to a term that contains an undetermined 1-form. Finally, it is proved that these connections and Levi-Civita describe a completely equivalent physics.

We start from the pure Einstein-Hilbert action in Metric Affine Gravity, with the orthonormal metric. We get an effective Levi-Civita Dilaton gravity theory in which the Dilaton field is related to the scaling of the gravitational coupling. When the Weyl symmetry is broken the resulting Einstein-Hilbert term is equivalent to the Levi-Civita one, using the projective invariance of the model, the non-metricity and torsion may be removed, so that we get a theory perfectly equivalent to general relativity. This may explain why low energy gravity is described by a Riemannian connection.
We study the most general solution for affine connections that are compatible with the variational principle in the Palatini formalism for the Einstein-Hilbert action (with possible minimally coupled matter terms). We find that there is a family of solutions generalising the Levi-Civita connection, characterised by an arbitrary, non-dynamical vector field ${\cal A}_μ$. We discuss the mathematical properties and the physical implications of this family and argue that, although there is a clear mathematical difference between these new Palatini connections and the Levi-Civita one, both unparamet…
We present the whole set of equations with regularity and matching conditions required for the description of physically meaningful static cylindrically symmmetric distributions of matter, smoothly matched to Levi-Civita vacuum spacetime. It is shown that the conformally flat solution with equal principal stresses represents an incompressible fluid. It is also proved that any conformally flat cylindrically symmetric static source cannot be matched through Darmois conditions to the Levi-Civita spacetime. Further evidence is given that when the Newtonian mass per unit length reaches 1/2 the spac…
We study non-trivial (i.e. non-Levi-Civita) connections in metric-affine Lovelock theories. First we study the projective invariance of general Lovelock actions and show that all connections constructed by acting with a projective transformation of the Levi-Civita connection are allowed solutions, albeit physically equivalent to Levi-Civita. We then show that the (non-integrable) Weyl connection is also a solution for the specific case of the four-dimensional metric-affine Gauss-Bonnet action, for arbritrary vector fields. The existence of this solution is related to a two-vector family of tra…
Teleparallel geometry utilizes Weitzenböck connection which has nontrivial torsion but no curvature and does not directly follow from the metric like Levi-Civita connection. In extended teleparallel theories, for instance in $f(T)$ or scalar-torsion gravity, the connection must obey its antisymmetric field equations. So far only a few analytic solutions were known. In this note we solve the $f(T,ϕ)$ gravity antisymmetric vacuum field equations for a generic rotating tetrad ansatz in Weyl canonical coordinates, and find the corresponding spin connection coefficients. By a coordinate transformat…
In general relativity, inertia and gravitation are both included in the Levi-Civita connection. As a consequence, the gravitational action, as well as the corresponding energy-momentum density, are in general contaminated by spurious contributions coming from inertial effects. In teleparallel gravity, on the other hand, because the spin connection represents inertial effects only, it is possible to separate inertia from gravitation. Relying on this property, it is shown that to each tetrad there is naturally associated a spin connection that locally removes the inertial effects from the action…
We present a number of conditions which are necessary for an n-dimensional projective structure (M,[nabla]) to include the Levi-Civita connection nabla of some metric on M. We provide an algorithm, which effectively checks if a Levi-Civita connection is in the projective class and, in the positive, which finds this connection and the metric. The article also provides a basic information on invariants of projective structures, including the treatment via Cartan's normal projective connection. In particular we show that there is a number of Fefferman-like conformal structures, defined on a subbu…
In the first order formalism of gravitational theories, the spacetime connection is considered as an independent variable to vary together with the metric. However, the metric still generates its Levi-Civita connection that turns out to determine the geodesics of matter. Recently, "hybrid" gravity theories have been introduced by constructing actions involving both the independent Palatini connection and the metric Levi-Civita connection. In this study a method is developed to analyse the field content of such theories, in particular to determine whether the propagating degrees of freedom are …
Two toy models are considered within the framework of noncommutative differential geometry. In the first one, the Einstein action of the Levi-Civita connection is computed for the algebra of matrix valued functions on a torus. It is shown that, assuming some constraints on the metric, this action splits into a classical-like, a quantum-like and a mixed term. In the second model, an analogue of the Palatini method of variation is applied to obtain critical points of the Einstein action functional for $M\sb 4(R)$. It is pointed out that a solution to the Palatini variational problem is not neces…
