We discuss whether some perturbed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universes could be creatable, i. e., could have vanishing energy, linear momentum and angular momentum, as it could be expectable if the Universe arose as a quantum fluctuation. On account of previous results, the background is assumed to be either closed (with very small curvature) or flat. In the first case, fully arbitrary linear perturbations are considered; whereas in the flat case, it is assumed the existence of: (i) inflationary scalar perturbations, that is to say, Gaussian adiabatic scalar perturbations having an spectrum close to the Harrison-Zel'dovich one, and (ii) arbitrary tensor perturbations. We conclude that, any closed perturbed universe is creatable, and also that, irrespective of the spectrum and properties of the inflationary gravitational waves, perturbed flat FRW universes with standard inflation are not creatable. Some considerations on pre-inflationary scalar perturbations are also presented. The creatable character of perturbed FRW universes is studied, for the first time, in this paper.
Asymptotic properties of electromagnetic waves are studied within the context of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology. Electromagnetic fields are considered as small perturbations on the background spacetime and Maxwell's equations are solved for all three cases of flat, closed and open FRW universes. The asymptotic character of these solutions are investigated and their relevance to the problem of cosmological tails of electromagnetic waves is discussed.
Two possible interpretations of FRW cosmologies (perfect fluid or dissipative fluid)are considered as consecutive phases of the system. Necessary conditions are found, for the transition from perfect fluid to dissipative regime to occur, bringing out the conspicuous role played by a particular state of the system (the ''critical point '').
Explicit expressions are found for the axisymmetric metric perturbations of the closed, flat and open FRW universes caused by toroidal motions of the cosmic fluid. The perturbations are decomposed in vector spherical harmonics on 2-spheres, but the radial dependence is left general. Solutions for general odd-parity $l$-pole perturbations are given for either angular velocities or angular momenta prescribed. In particular, in case of closed universes the solutions require a special treatment of the Legendre equation.
In this work we use a recently developed nonintegrability theorem of Morales and Ramis to prove that the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmological model with a conformally coupled massive scalar field is nonintegrable.
A regularization procedure has been recently suggested for regularizing Big Bang singularities in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes. We argue that this procedure is only appliable to one case of Big Bang singularities and does not affect other types of singularities.
The idea that the universe has zero total energy when one includes the contribution from the gravitational field is reconsidered. A Hamiltonian is proposed as an energy for the exact equations of FRW cosmology: it is then shown that this energy is constant. Thus open and critically open FRW universes have the energy of their asymptotic state of infinite dilution, which is Minkowski space with zero energy. It is then shown that de Sitter space, the inflationary attractor, also has zero energy, and the argument is generalized to Bianchi models converging to this attractor.
Hawking's proposal that the Universe has no temporal boundary and hence no beginning depends on the notion of imaginary time and is usually referred to as the "no-boundary proposal." This paper discusses a simple alternative approach by means of the five-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model.
A global intrinsic time in Friedmann - Robertson - Walker models is proportional to a scaling factor of the spatial metric. The aim of the paper is to study an applicability of the intrinsic global time chosen to nearest non-symmetric cases by taking into account linear metric perturbations. Scalar linear perturbations add some corrections to the effective energy density in the Hubble law. The metric vector and tensor perturbations in linear approximation do not influence the intrinsic time.
Using as an illustrative example the p=1 operator-ordered Wheeler-DeWitt equation for a closed, radiation-filled Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, we introduce and discuss the supersymmetric double Darboux method in quantum cosmology. A one-parameter family of ``quantum'' universes and the corresponding ``wavefunctions of the universe" for this case are presented
In this paper, we calculate the one-loop quantum cosmological corrections to the kink energy in the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe in which the fluctuation potential $V^{\prime\prime}$ has a shape invariance property. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to implement our setup for describing quantum kink-like states. It is conjectured that the corrections lead to the renormalized gravitational constant.
We investigate toroidal Marginally Outer Trapped Surfaces (MOTS) and Marginally Outer Trapped Tubes (MOTT) in closed Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometries. They are constructed by embedding Constant Mean Curvature (CMC) Clifford tori in a FLRW spacetime. This construction is used to assess the quality of certain isoperimetric inequalities, recently proved in axial symmetry. Similarly to spherically symmetric MOTS existing in FLRW spacetimes, the toroidal ones are also unstable.
According to the AdS/CFT correspondence conjecture, the Randall-Sundrum infinite braneworld is equivalent to four dimensional Einstein gravity with ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills fields at low energies. Here we derive a four dimensional effective equation of motion for tensor-type perturbations in two different pictures, and demonstrate their equivalence.
In a previous paper we derived a post-Newtonian approximation to cosmology which, in contrast to former Newtonian and post-Newtonian cosmological theories, has a well-posed initial value problem. In this paper, this new post-Newtonian theory is compared with the fully general relativistic theory, in the context of the k = 0 Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmologies. It is found that the post-Newtonian theory reproduces the results of its general relativistic counterpart, whilst the Newtonian theory does not.
Recent evidence indicates that the Universe is open, i.e., spatially hyperbolic, longstanding theoretical preferences to the contrary notwithstanding. This makes it possible to select a vacuum state, Fock space, and particle definition for a quantized field, by requiring concordance with ordinary flat-spacetime theory at late times. The particle-number basis states thus identified span the physical state space of the field at all times. This construction is demonstrated here explicitly for a massive, minimally coupled, linear scalar field in an open, radiation-dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Wal…
The theory of N = 1 supergravity with gauged supermatter is studied in the context of a k = + 1 Friedmann minisuperspace model. It is found by imposing the Lorentz and supersymmetry constraints that there are {\seveni no} physical states in the particular SU(2) model studied.
We complete a classification of junctions of two Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times bounded by a spherical thin wall. Our analysis covers super-horizon bubbles and thus complements the previous work of Berezin, Kuzumin and Tkachev. Contrary to sub-horizon bubbles, various topology types for super-horizon bubbles are possible, regardless of the sign of the extrinsic curvature. We also derive a formula for the peculiar velocity of a domain wall for all types of junction.
We study the cosmological evolution with nonsingular branes generated by a bulk scalar field coupled to gravity. The specific setup investigated leads to branes with a time-dependent warp factor. We calculate the effective Hubble parameter and the effective scale factor for the FRW branes obtained solutions. The spatially dependent branes solutions also were found.
We investigate spherically symmetric self-similar solutions in Brans-Dicke theory. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ(1 \le γ<2)$, we show that there are no non-trivial solutions which approach asymptotically to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the energy density is positive. This result suggests that primordial black holes in Brans-Dicke theory cannot grow at the same rate as the size of the cosmological particle horizon.
We study the existence of black holes in a homogeneous and isotropic expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe dominated by dark energy. We show that black holes can exist in such a universe by considering some specific McVittie solutions. Although these solutions violate all three energy conditions, the FRW background does satisfy the weak energy condition.
Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is examined from the point of view of gravitoelectromagnetism, in the approximation of spacetime regions small in comparison with the Hubble radius. The usual Lorentz gauge is not appropriate for this situation, while the Painlevé-Gullstrand gauge is rather natural. Several non-trivial features and differences with respect to "standard" asymptotically flat gravitoelectromagnetism are discussed.
We show that the dynamics of a spatially closed Friedmann - Robertson - Walker Universe conformally coupled to a real, free, massive scalar field, is chaotic, for large enough field amplitudes. We do so by proving that this system is integrable under the adiabatic approximation, but that the corresponding KAM tori break up when non adiabatic terms are considered. This finding is confirmed by numerical evaluation of the Lyapunov exponents associated with the system, among other criteria. Chaos sets strong limitations to our ability to predict the value of the field at the Big Crunch, from its g…
Recently, a Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond semiclassical approximation in black hole physics was developed by \emph{Banerjee} and \emph{Majhi}\cite{beyond0}. In this paper, we generalize their analysis of black holes to the case of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. It is shown that all the higher order quantum corrections in the single particle action are proportional to the usual semiclassical contribution. The corrections to the Hawking-like temperature and entropy of apparent horizon for FRW universe are also obtained. In the corrected entropy, the area law involves logarithmic area…
In (Phys. Rev. D 62, 081501, 2000) we proposed a unified approach to description of continuous and discrete spacetime based on nonassociative geometry and described nonassociative smooth and discrete de Sitter models. In our paper we give the description of nonassociative Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime.
We set up the Dirac equation in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry and separate the spatial and time variables. In the case of a closed universe, the spatial dependence is solved explicitly, giving rise to a discrete set of solutions. We compute the probability integral and analyze a space-time normalization integral. This analysis allows us to introduce the fermionic projector in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry and to specify its global normalization as well as its local form.
We reconsider the cosmological model discussed by Sung-Won Kim [Phys. Rev D 53, 6889 (1996)] in the context of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with a traversable wormhole, where it is assumed that the matter content is divided into two parts: the cosmic part that depends on time only and the wormhole part that depends on space only. The cosmic part obeys the barotropic equation of state $p_c=γρ_c$. The complete analysis requires further care and reveals more interesting results than what was previously shown by the author. They can be readily applied to the evolution of a large class of…
The novel idea that spatial expansion of our universe can be regarded as the consequence of the emergence of space was proposed by Padmanabhan. By using of the basic law governing the emergence, which Padmanabhan called holographic equipartition, he also arrives at the Friedmann equation in a flat universe. When generalized to other gravity theories, the holographic equipartition need to be generalized with an expression of $f(ΔN,N_{sur})$. In this paper, we give general expressions of $f(ΔN,N_{sur})$ for generalized holographic equipartition which can be used to derive the Friedmann equations…
The data on a strongly-nonequilibrium superconducting phase transition in the multi-Josephson-junction loop (MJJL), which represents a close analog of one-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model, are used to refine a concentration of topological defects after the phase transitions of Higgs fields in the early Universe. The thermal correlations between the phases of order parameter revealed in MJJL can reduce considerably the expected number of cosmological defects and, thereby, show a new way to resolve the long-standing problem of their excessive concentration.
We show that homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models with radiation and scalar field have, in general, two possible chaotic exits to inflation. These models may describe the early stages of inflation. The central point of our analysis is based on the possible existence of one or two saddle-centers points in the phase space of the models.
Cosmological singularity and asymptotic behaviour of scale factor of generalized cosmological models are analyzed in respect of their structural stability. It is shown, that cosmological singularity is structurally unstable for the majority of models with barotropic perfect fluid with strong energy condition. Inclusion of Lambda-term extends the set of structurally stable cosmological models.
A general class of cosmological models driven by a nonlocal scalar field inspired by the string field theory is studied. Using the fact that the considering linear nonlocal model is equivalent to an infinite number of local models we have found an exact special solution of the nonlocal Friedmann equations. This solution describes a monotonically increasing Universe with the phantom dark energy.
We study the conditions for the consistency of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. It turns out to be that in this situation the accelerated expansion of the Universe takes place, with the time dependence of the scale factor turns out to be similar to the case of presence of the Chaplygin gas. Also we found that this modification changes the total density of the Universe and therefore gives a nontrivial impact to a cosmological scenario.
The study of the matching of stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes with Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes preserving the axial symmetry is presented. We show, in particular, that any orthogonally transitive stationary and axisymmetric region in FLRW must be static, irrespective of the matter content. Therefore, previous results on static regions in FLRW cosmologies apply. As a result, the only stationary and axisymmetric vacuum region that can be matched to a (non-static) FLRW spacetime is a spherically symmetric region of Schwarzschild. This constitutes another uniqueness result…
Blowing-up solutions of Klein-Gordon equations with gauge variant semilinear terms in Friedmann-Lemaítre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes under finite speed of propagation
Maxwell and Dirac fields in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime is investigated using the Newman-Penrose method. The variables are all separable, with the angular dependence given by the spin-weighted spherical harmonics. All the radial parts reduce to the barrier penetration problem, with mostly repulsive potentials representing the centrifugal energies. Both the helicity states of the photon field see the same potential, but that of the Dirac field see different ones; one component even sees attractive potential in the open universe. The massless fields have the usual exponential time depen…
Elliptic functions are known to appear in many problems, applied and theoretical. However, a lesser known application is in the study of exact solutions to Einstein's gravitational field equations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Lemaitre-Walker (FRLW) cosmology. We will show explicitly how Jacobi and Weierstrass elliptic functions arise in this context, and will additionally show connections with theta functions.
The existence of self-similar solutions is discussed in symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-theory for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background geometry with zero and non-zero spatial curvature. For the four distinct families of connections which describe the specific cosmology in symmetric teleparallel gravity, the functional form of $f(Q)$ is reconstructed. Finally, to see if the analogy with General Relativity holds, we discuss the relation of the self-similar solutions with the asymptotic behaviour of more general $f(Q)$ functions.
We use exact general solutions for the spatially flat FRW and the anisotropic Bianchi I cosmologies to show that generically uncoupled scalar fields cooperate to make inflation more probable, while the presence of several interacting fields hinders the occurrence of the phenomenon, in accordance with previous results based on particular power-law solutions. Similar conclusions are reached in the case of Bianchi VI$_0$ spacetimes, for power-law solutions which are proved to be attractors.
We illustrate how the group of symmetry transformations, which preserve the form of the n--dimensional flat Friedmann--Robertson--Walker cosmologies satisfying Einstein equations, acts in any dimension. This group relates the energy density and the isotropic pressure of the cosmic fluid to the expansion rate. The freedom associated with the dimension of the space time yields assisted inflation even when the energy density of the fluid is a dimensional invariant and enriches the set of duality transformations leading to phantom cosmologies.
Starting from the classic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker theory with big bang it is shown that the solutions of the field equations can be extended to negative times. Choosing a new cosmic time scale instead of proper time one achieves complete differentiability of the scale factor and of suitable thermodynamic quantities equivalent to pressure and energy density. Then, the singularity of big bang manifests itself only by the vanishing of the scale factor at time zero. Moreover, all solutions of the field equations are defined for all times from -infinity to +infinity. In a separate chapter the ho…
We show that the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in a homogeneous and isotropic universe are given by triconfluent Heun functions for the spatially closed, flat, and open geometries of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with different forms of energy. In a matter-dominated universe, we find the polynomial solution and the energy density spectrum. In the cases of radiation-dominated and vacuum universes, there are no polynomial solutions as shown.
Motivated by the models of geometry with discrete spaces as additional dimensions we investigate the stability of cosmological solutions in models with two metrics of the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type. We propose an effective gravity action that couples the two metrics in a similar manner as in the bimetric theory of gravity and analyse whether standard solutions with identical metrics are stable under small perturbations.
Using the standard canonical formalism, the equations of mechanics and kinetics in the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-times in Cartesian coordinates have been obtained. The transformation law of the generalized momentum under the shift of the origin of the coordinate system has been found, and the form invariance of the Hamiltonian function relative to the shift transformation has been proved. The general solution of the collisionless Boltzmann equation has been found. In the case of the homogeneous distribution the solutions of the kinetic equation for several simple, but im…
The $R_h = ct$ cosmological model has received considerable attention in recent years owing to claims that it is favoured over the standard $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model by most observational data. A key feature of the $R_h = ct$ model is that the zero active mass condition $ρ+ 3p = 0$ holds at all epochs. Most recently, Melia has claimed that this condition is a requirement of the symmetries of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime. We demonstrate that this claim is false and results from a flaw in the logic of Melia's argument.
The evolution of spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models containing a perfect fluid with equation of state p=wρ and a cosmological constant Λ is investigated for arbitrary combinations of w and Λ, using standard qualitative analysis borrowed from classical mechanics. This approach allows one to consider a large variety of situations, appreciating similarities and differences between models, without solving the Friedmann equation, and is suitable for an elementary course in cosmology.
We consider effective actions of the cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models and discuss their fermionic rigid BRST invariance. Further, we demonstrate the finite field-dependent BRST transformations as a limiting case of continuous field-dependent BRST transformations described in terms of continuous parameter $κ$. The Jacobian under such finite field-dependent BRST transformations is computed explicitly, which amounts an extra piece in the effective action within functional integral. We show that for a particular choice of the parameter the finite field-dependent BRST transforma…
We solve the source free electromagnetic wave equation in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times for curvature $K=0$ and $K=-1$. Deriving a solution expression in the form of spherical means we deduce and compare two properties of the Maxwell propagator namely, decay rates, as well as continuity through the space-time singularity to that of the scalar wave equation presented by Abbasi and Craig [1].
A novel idea that the cosmic acceleration can be understood from the perspective that spacetime dynamics is an emergent phenomena was proposed by T. Padmanabhan. The Friedmann equations of FRW universe can be derived from different gravity theories with different modifications of Padmanabhan's proposal. In this paper, a unified formula is proposed, in which those modifications can be treated as special cases when the formula is applied to different universe radii. Furthermore, the dynamic equations of FRW universe in the $ f(R) $ theory and deformed Ho{ř}ava-Lifshitz theory are investigated. T…
Electrodynamics for self-interacting scalar fields in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times is studied. The corresponding one-loop field equation for the expectation value of the complex scalar field in the conformal vacuum is derived. For exponentially expanding universes, the equations for the Bogoliubov coefficients describing the coupling of the scalar field to gravity are solved numerically. They yield a non-local correction to the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential which does not modify the pattern of minima found in static de Sitter space. Such a correction contains a …
We investigate exact solutions and the asymptotic dynamics for the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe with nonzero spatial curvature in the fourth-order modified teleparallel gravitational theory known as $f\left( T, B\right) $ theory. We show that the field equations admit a minisuperspace description, and they can reproduce any exact form of the scale factor. Moreover, we calculate the equilibrium points and analyze their stability. We show that Milne and Milne-like solutions are supported, and the de Sitter universe is provided. To complete our analysis, we use Poincaré variable…
We show that the Big Bang singularity of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model does not raise major problems to General Relativity. We prove a theorem showing that the Einstein equation can be written in a non-singular form, which allows the extension of the spacetime before the Big Bang. The physical interpretation of the fields used is discussed. These results follow from our research on singular semi-Riemannian geometry and singular General Relativity.
We obtain the correct hamiltonian which describes the dynamics of classes of asymptotic open Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes, which includes Tolman geometries. We calculate the surface term that has to be added to the usual hamiltonian of General Relativity in order to obtain an improved hamiltonian with well defined functional derivatives. For asymptotic flat FLRW spaces, this surface term is zero, but for asymptotic negative curvature FLRW spaces it is not null in general. In the particular case of the Tolman geometries, they vanish. The surface term evaluated on a pa…
In a recent paper [arXiv:1206.4916] by T. Padmanabhan, it was argued that our universe provides an ideal setup to stress the issue that cosmic space is emergent as cosmic time progresses and that the expansion of the universe is due to the difference between the number of degrees of freedom on a holographic surface and the one in the emerged bulk. In this note following this proposal we obtain the Friedmann equation of a higher dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. By properly modifying the volume increase and the number of degrees of freedom on the holographic surface from the entr…
In this work we study the existence of mechanisms of transition to global chaos in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a massive conformally coupled scalar field. We propose a complexification of the radius of the universe so that the global dynamics can be understood. We show numerically the existence of heteroclinic connections of the unstable and stable manifolds to periodic orbits associated to the saddle-center equilibrium points. We find two bifurcations which are crucial in creating non-collapsing universes both in the real and imaginary version of the models. The techniqu…
We study a $R^{2}$ model of gravity with torsion in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. The model is cast in Hamiltonian form subtracting from the original Lagrangian the total time derivative of $f_{K}f_{R}$, where $f_{K}$ is proportional to the trace of the extrinsic curvature tensor, and $f_{R}$ is obtained differentiating the Lagrangian with respect to the highest derivative. Torsion is found to lead to a primary constraint linear in the momenta and a secondary constraint quadratic in the momenta, and the full field equations are finally worked out in detail. Problems to be studi…
We present an autonomous phase-plane describing the evolution of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models containing a perfect fluid (with barotropic index gamma) in Brans-Dicke gravity (with Brans-Dicke parameter omega). We find self-similar fixed points corresponding to Nariai's power-law solutions for spatially flat models and curvature-scaling solutions for curved models. At infinite values of the phase-plane variables we recover O'Hanlon and Tupper's vacuum solutions for spatially flat models and the Milne universe for negative spatial curvature. We find conditions for the existence and stabilit…
We analyze the leading terms of the spectral action for a model of noncommutative geometry, which is a product of $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a two-point space exploring the previously neglected case when the metrics over each sheet are different. Assuming the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type of the metric for both sheets we obtain the action, which in addition to the the usual cosmological constant terms and the Einstein-Hilbert term involves a nonlinear interaction term. We study qualitative picture of potential consequences of such term in the basic cosmological models.
A generalized model of space-time is given, taking into consideration the anisotropic structure of fields which are depended on the position and the direction (velocity). In this framework a generalized FRW-metric the Raychaudhouri and Friedmann equations are studied.A long range vector field of cosmological origin is considered in relation to the physical geometry of space-time in which Cartan connection has a fundamental role. The generalised Friedmann equations are produced including anisotropic terms. The variation of anisotropy $z_t$ is expressed in terms of the Cartan torsion tensor of the …
Ricci collineations and Ricci inheritance collineations of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes are considered. When the Ricci tensor is non-degenerate, it is shown that the spacetime always admits a fifteen parameter group of Ricci inheritance collineations; this is the maximal possible dimension for spacetime manifolds. The general form of the vector generating the symmetry is exhibited. It is also shown, in the generic case, that the group of Ricci collineations is six-dimensional and coincides with the isometry group. In special cases the spacetime may admit either one or four proper Ricc…
Einstein's equation, in its standard form, breaks down at the Big Bang singularity. A new version, equivalent to Einstein's whenever the latter is defined, but applicable in wider situations, is proposed. The new equation remains smooth at the Big Bang singularity of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model. It is a tensor equation defined in terms of the Ricci part of the Riemann curvature. It is obtained by taking the Kulkarni-Nomizu product between Einstein's equation and the metric tensor.
