For any group G of order n, a subset A of G is said to be product-free if there is no solution of the equation ab=c with a,b,c in A. Previous results of Gowers showed that the size of any product-free subset of G is at most n/d^(1/3), where d is the smallest dimension of a nontrivial representation of G. However, this upper bound does not match the best lower bound. We will generalize the upper bound to the case of product-poor subsets A, in which the equation ab=c is allowed to have a few solutions with a,b,c in A. We prove that the upper bound for the size of product-poor subsets matches the best lower bound in many families of groups. We will also generalize the concept of product-free to the case in which we have many subsets of a group, and different constraints about products of the elements in the subsets.
A subset of a group is product-free if it does not contain elements a, b, c such that ab = c. We review progress on the problem of determining the size of the largest product-free subset of an arbitrary finite group, including a lower bound due to the author, and a recent upper bound due to Gowers. The bound of Gowers is more general; it allows three different sets A, B, C such that one cannot solve ab = c with a in A, b in B, c in C. We exhibit a refinement of the lower bound construction which shows that for this broader question, the bound of Gowers is essentially optimal.
We present examples of closed subsets of a free group such that their product is not closed in the profinite topology. We discuss how to characterize a subset of a free group which is closed in the profinite topology and its product with any finitely generated subgroup of a free group is also closed in the profinite topology.
Let $G$ be a group and $G_0 \subseteq G$ be a subset. A sequence over $G_0$ means a finite sequence of terms from $G_0$, where the order of elements is disregarded and the repetition of elements is allowed. A product-one sequence is a sequence whose elements can be ordered such that their product equals the identity element of the group. We study algebraic and arithmetic properties of monoids of product-one sequences over finite subsets of $G$ and over the whole group $G$, with a special emphasis on infinite dihedral groups.
It is shown that membership in rational subsets of wreath products H \wr V with H a finite group and V a virtually free group is decidable. On the other hand, it is shown that there exists a fixed finitely generated submonoid in the wreath product Z \wr Z with an undecidable membership problem.
For W a finite Coxeter group, a formula is found for the size of W equivalence classes of subsets of a base. The proof is a case-by-case analysis using results and tables of Carter and Orlik/Solomon. As a corollary we obtain an alternating sum identity which generalizes a well-known identity from the theory of Coxeter groups.
We adapt Safin's result on powers of sets in free groups to obtain Helfgott type growth in free products: if A is any finite subset of a free product of two arbitrary groups then either A is conjugate into one of the factors, or the size of the triple product AAA of A is at least 1/7776 times the square of |A|, or A generates an infinite cyclic or infinite dihedral group. We also point out that if A is any finite subset of a limit group then |AAA| satisfies the above inequality unless A generates a free abelian group. This gives rise to many infinite groups G where there exist c>0 and d=1 such…
We prove the following one-sided product-mixing theorem for the alternating group: Given subsets $X,Y,Z \subset A_n$ of densities $α,β,γ$ satisfying $\min(αβ,αγ,βγ)\gg n^{-1}(\log n)^7$, there are at least $ (1+o(1))αβγ|A_n|^2$ solutions to $xy=z$ with $x\in X, y\in Y, z\in Z$. One consequence is that the largest product-free subset of $A_n$ has density at most $n^{-1/2}(\log n)^{7/2}$, which is best possible up to logarithms and improves the best previous bound of $n^{-1/3}$ due to Gowers. The main tools are a Fourier-analytic reduction noted by Ellis and Green to a problem just about the sta…
In recent years there has been significant progress in the study of products of subsets of finite groups and of finite simple groups in particular. In this paper we consider which families of finite simple groups $G$ have the property that for each $ε> 0$ there exists $N > 0$ such that, if $|G| \ge N$ and $S, T$ are normal subsets of $G$ with at least $ε|G|$ elements each, then every non-trivial element of $G$ is the product of an element of $S$ and an element of $T$. We show that this holds in a strong sense for finite simple groups of Lie type of bounded rank, while it does not hold for alte…
We propose a general conjecture on decompositions of finite simple groups as products of conjugates of an arbitrary subset. We prove this conjecture for bounded subsets of arbitrary finite simple groups, and for large subsets of groups of Lie type of bounded rank. Some of our arguments apply recent advances in the theory of growth in finite simple groups of Lie type, and provide a variety of new product decompositions of these groups.
The purpose of this paper is two fold. First we introduce the box-tensor product of two groups as a generalization of the nonabelian tensor product of groups. We extend various results for nonabelian tensor products to the box-tensor product such as the finiteness of the product when each factor is finite. This would give yet another proof of Ellis's theorem on the finiteness of the nonabelian tensor product of groups when each factor is finite. Secondly, using the methods developed in proving the finiteness of the box-tensor product, we prove the finiteness of Inassaridze's tensor product und…
Let $G$ be a non-abelian finite simple group. A famous result of Liebeck and Shalev is that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S$ is a non-trivial normal subset in $G$ then $S^{k} = G$ for any integer $k$ at least $c \cdot (\log|G|/\log|S|)$. This result is generalized by showing that there exists an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S_{1}, \ldots , S_{k}$ are normal subsets in $G$ with $\prod_{i=1}^{k} |S_{i}| \geq {|G|}^{c}$ then $S_{1} \cdots S_{k} = G$.
We study stability properties of the Haagerup property and of coarse embeddability in a Hilbert space, under certain semidirect products. In particular, we prove that they are stable under taking standard wreath products. Our construction also allows for a characterization of subsets with relative Property T in a standard wreath product.
It was proved that for any finite set of elements of a free product of residually finite groups such that no two of them belong to conjugate cyclic subgroups and each of them do not belong to a subgroup which is conjugate a to free factor there exists a homomorphism of the free product onto a finite group such that the order of the image of each fixed element is an arbitrary multiple of a constant number.
A subset of a group is said to be product-free if it does not contain three elements satisfying the equation $xy=z$. We give a negative answer to a question of Babai and Sós on the existence of large product-free sets by model theoretic means. This question was originally answered by Gowers. Furthermore, we give a natural and sufficient model theoretic condition for a group to have a large product-free subset, as well as a model theoretic account of a result of Nikolov and Pyber on triple products.
We use language theory to study the rational subset problem for groups and monoids. We show that the decidability of this problem is preserved under graph of groups constructions with finite edge groups. In particular, it passes through free products amalgamated over finite subgroups and HNN extensions with finite associated subgroups. We provide a simple proof of a result of Grunschlag showing that the decidability of this problem is a virtual property. We prove further that the problem is decidable for a direct product of a group G with a monoid M if and only if membership is uniformly decid…
Bavard proved a duality theorem between commutator length and quasimorphisms. Burago, Ivanov and Polterovich introduced the notion of a conjugation-invariant norm which is a generalization of commutator length. Entov and Polterovich proved that Oh-Schwarz spectral invariants are subset-controlled quasimorphisms which are geralizations of quasimorphisms. In the present paper, we prove a Bavard-type duality theorem between conjugation-invariant (pseudo-)norms and subset-controlled quasimorphisms on stable groups. %We also give an application of its generalization to symplectic geometry related t…
We study a generalization Rec_d of the group IET=Rec_1 of interval exchange transformations in every dimension d>0, called the rectangle exchange transformations group. The subset of restricted rotations in IET is a generating subset and we prove that a natural generalization of these elements, called restricted shuffles, form a generating subset of Rec_d. We denote by T_d the subset of Rec_d made up of those transformations that permute two disjoint rectangles by translations. We prove that the derived subgroup of Rec_d is generated by T_d. We also identify the abelianization of Rec_d.
A packing of subsets $\mathcal S_1,..., \mathcal S_n$ in a group $G$ is a sequence $(g_1,...,g_n)$ such that $g_1\mathcal S_1,...,g_n\mathcal S_n$ are disjoint subsets of $G$. We give a formula for the number of packings if the group $G$ is finite and if the subsets $\mathcal S_1,...,\mathcal S_n$ satisfy a genericity condition. This formula can be seen as a generalization of the falling factorials which encode the number of packings in the case where all the sets $\mathcal S_i$ are singletons.
Subset currents on hyperbolic groups were introduced by Kapovich and Nagnibeda as a generalization of geodesic currents on hyperbolic groups, which were introduced by Bonahon and have been successfully studied in the case of the fundamental group $π_1 (Σ)$ of a compact hyperbolic surface $Σ$. Kapovich and Nagnibeda particularly studied subset currents on free groups. In this article, we develop the theory of subset currents on $π_1(Σ)$, which we call subset currents on $Σ$. We prove that the space $\mathrm{SC}(Σ)$ of subset currents on $Σ$ is a measure-theoretic completion of the set of conjug…
We give two examples of a finitely generated subgroup of a free group and a subset, closed in the profinite topology of a free group, such that their product is not closed in the profinite topology of a free group.

Let $G$ be a finite group and $φ(G)=|\{a\in G \mid o(a)=\exp(G)\}|$, where $o(a)$ denotes the order of $a$ in $G$ and $\exp(G)$ denotes the exponent of $G$. Under a natural hypothesis, in this note we determine the groups $G$ such that $\forall\, H,K\leq G$, $H\subseteq K$ implies $φ(H)\midφ(K)$. This partially answers Problem 5.4 in \cite{6}.
We provide a description of the fundamental group of the quotient of a product of topological spaces $X_i$, each admitting a universal cover, by a finite group $G$, provided that there is only a finite number of path-connected components in $X_i^g$ for every $g\in G$. This generalizes previous work of Bauer-Catanese-Grunewald-Pignatelli and Dedieu-Perroni.
We introduce an external version of the internal r-fold semidirect product of groups (SDP) of Carrasco and Cegarra. Just as for the classical external SDP, certain algebraic data are required to guarantee associativity of the construction. We give an algorithmic procedure for computing axioms characterizing these data. Additionally, we give criteria for determining when a family of homomorphisms from the factors of an SDP into a monoid or group assemble into a homomorphism on the entire SDP. These tools will be used elsewhere to give explicit algebraic axioms for hypercrossed complexes, which …
Let $X$ be the countable product of Abelian locally compact Polish groups and $A,B\subset X$ be two Borel sets, which are not Haar-null in $X$. We prove that the sum-set $A+B:=\{a+b:a\in A,\;\;b\in B\}$ is Haar-open in the sense that for any non-empty compact subset $K\subset X$ and point $p\in K$ there exists a point $x\in X$ such that the set $K\cap(A+B+x)$ is a neighborhood of $p$ in $K$. This is a generalization of the classical Steinhaus Theorem (1920) to non-locally compact groups. We do not know if this generalization holds for Banach spaces.
