In recent years there has been significant progress in the study of products of subsets of finite groups and of finite simple groups in particular. In this paper we consider which families of finite simple groups $G$ have the property that for each $ε> 0$ there exists $N > 0$ such that, if $|G| \ge N$ and $S, T$ are normal subsets of $G$ with at least $ε|G|$ elements each, then every non-trivial element of $G$ is the product of an element of $S$ and an element of $T$.
We show that this holds in a strong sense for finite simple groups of Lie type of bounded rank, while it does not hold for alternating groups or groups of the form ${\mathrm{PSL}}_n(q)$ where $q$ is fixed and $n$ tends to infinity.
Our second main result is that any element in a transitive permutation representation of a sufficiently large finite simple group is a product of two derangements.
Motivated by questions arising in connection with branched coverings of connected smooth projective curves over finite fields, we study the proportion of fixed point free elements (derangements) in cosets of normal subgroups of primitive permutations groups. Using the Aschbacher-O'Nan-Scott theorem for primitive groups to partition the problem, we provide complete answers for affine groups and groups which contain a regular normal nonabelian subgroup.

Let (G, *) be a semigroup, D subset of G, and n >= 2 be an integer. We say that (D, *) is an n-closed subset of G if a_1* ... *a_n in D for every a_1, ..., a_n in D. Hence every closed set is a 2-closed set. The concept of n-closed sets arise in so many natural examples. For example, let D be the set of all odd integers, then (D, +) is a 3-closed subset of (Z, +) that is not a 2-closed subset of (Z, +). If K = {1, 4, 7, 10, ...}, then (K, +) is a 4-closed subset of (Z, +) that is not an n-closed subset of (Z, +) for n = 2, 3. In this paper, we show that if (H, *) is a subgroup of a group (G, *…
Let $G$ be a non-abelian finite simple group. A famous result of Liebeck and Shalev is that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S$ is a non-trivial normal subset in $G$ then $S^{k} = G$ for any integer $k$ at least $c \cdot (\log|G|/\log|S|)$. This result is generalized by showing that there exists an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S_{1}, \ldots , S_{k}$ are normal subsets in $G$ with $\prod_{i=1}^{k} |S_{i}| \geq {|G|}^{c}$ then $S_{1} \cdots S_{k} = G$.
For a simple algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field, we study products of normal subsets. For this we mark the nodes of the Dynkin diagram of $G$. We use two types of labels, a binary marking and a labeling with non-negative integers. The first is used to recognize large conjugacy classes which appear in a product of two conjugacy classes while the second is used to keep track of multiplicities of regular diagrams. In particular, we formulate sufficient conditions in terms of marked diagrams, for a product of normal subsets in $G$ to contain regular semisimple elements.
Let $π$ be a set of primes and $\mathfrak{F}$ be a formation. In this article a properties of the class ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}$ of all groups $G$, such that $π(G)\subseteq π(\mathfrak{F})$ and the normalizers of all Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ are $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal in $G$ for every $p\inπ\capπ(G)$ are investigated. It is established that ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}$ is a formation. Some hereditary saturated formations $\mathfrak{F}$ for which ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}=\mathfrak{F}$ are founded.
For an integer $n\geq 2$, the triangular graph has vertex set the $2$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and edge set the pairs of $2$-subsets intersecting at one point. Such graphs are known to be halved graphs of bipartite rectagraphs, which are connected triangle-free graphs in which every $2$-path lies in a unique quadrangle. We refine this result and provide a characterisation of connected locally triangular graphs as halved graphs of normal quotients of $n$-cubes. To do so, we study a parameter that generalises the concept of minimum distance for a binary linear code to arbitrary automorphism g…
In this short note, we prove that there is a well behaved notion of normal hull for smooth algebraic group schemes over a field and that the commutator group $(G,H)$ is well defined for $H\subset G$ smooth, even when both of them are not connected.
Let $\G$ be a limit group, $S\subset\G$ a subgroup, and $N$ the normaliser of $S$. If $H_1(S,\mathbb Q)$ has finite $\Q$-dimension, then $S$ is finitely generated and either $N/S$ is finite or $N$ is abelian. This result has applications to the study of subdirect products of limit groups.
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group on $n$ elements, and $Σ\subseteq S_{n}$ a symmetric subset of permutations. Aldous' spectral gap conjecture, proved by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer [arXiv:0906.1238], states that if $Σ$ is a set of transpositions, then the second eigenvalue of the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}\left(S_{n},Σ\right)$ is identical to the second eigenvalue of the Schreier graph on $n$ vertices depicting the action of $S_{n}$ on $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\}$. Inspired by this seminal result, we study similar questions for other types of sets in $S_{n}$. Specifically, we consider n…
Suppose G is a topological group containing a (closed) topological copy of the Frechet-Urysohn fan. If G is a perfectly normal sequential space (a normal k-space) then every closed metrizable subset in $G$ is locally compact. Applying this result to topological groups whose underlying topological space can be written as a direct limit of a sequence of closed metrizable subsets, we get that every such a group either is metrizable or is homeomorphic to the product of a $k_ω$-space and a discrete space.
Let S be a surface and let Mod(S,K) be the mapping class group of S permuting a Cantor subset K of S. We prove two structure theorems for normal subgroups of Mod(S,K). (Purity:) if S has finite type, every normal subgroup of Mod(S,K) either contains the kernel of the forgetful map to the mapping class group of S, or it is `pure', i.e. it fixes the Cantor set pointwise. (Inertia:) for any n element subset Q of the Cantor set, there is a forgetful map from the pure subgroup PMod(S,K) of Mod(S,K) to the mapping class group of (S,Q) fixing Q pointwise. If N is a normal subgroup of Mod(S,K) contain…
We introduce a family of atomic measures on free groups generated by no-return random walks. These measures are shown to be very convenient for comparing "relative sizes" of subgroups, context-free and regular subsets (that, subsets generated by finite automata) of free groups. Many asymptotic characteristics of subsets and subgroups are naturally expressed as analytic properties of related generating functions. We introduce an hierarchy of asymptotic behaviour "at infinity" of subsets in the free groups, more sensitive than the traditionally used asymptotic density, and apply it to normal sub…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $C/k$ be a smooth connected affine curve. Denote by $π_1(C)$ its algebraic fundamental group. The goal of this paper is to characterize a certain subset of closed normal subgroups $N$ of $π_1(C)$. In "Normal subgroups of fundamental groups of affine curves in positive characteristic" we proved the same result under the additional hypothesis that $k$ had countable cardinality.
Suppose $G$ is a finite group and $A\subseteq G$ is such that $\{gA:g\in G\}$ has VC-dimension strictly less than $k$. We find algebraically well-structured sets in $G$ which, up to a chosen $ε>0$, describe the structure of $A$ and behave regularly with respect to translates of $A$. For the subclass of groups with uniformly fixed finite exponent $r$, these algebraic objects are normal subgroups with index bounded in terms of $k$, $r$, and $ε$. For arbitrary groups, we use Bohr neighborhoods of bounded rank and width inside normal subgroups of bounded index. Our proofs are largely model theoret…
