We present a classification of a large class of type IIA N=1 supersymmetric compactifications to AdS4, based on left-invariant SU(3)-structures on coset spaces. In the absence of sources the parameter spaces of all cosets leading to a solution contain regions corresponding to nearly-Kaehler structure. I.e. all these cosets can be viewed as deformations of nearly-Kaehler manifolds. Allowing for (smeared) six-brane/orientifold sources we obtain more possibilities. In the second part of the paper, we use a simple ansatz, which can be applied to all six-dimensional coset manifolds considered here, to construct explicit thick domain wall solutions separating two AdS4 vacua of different radii. We also consider smooth interpolations between AdS4 x M6 and R^{1,2} x M7, where M6 is a nearly-Kaehler manifold and M7 is the G2-holonomy cone over M6.
We study compactifications of type IIA supergravity on cosets exhibiting SU(3) structure. We establish the consistency of the truncation based on left-invariance, providing a justification for the choice of expansion forms which yields gauged N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions. We explore N=1 solutions of these theories, emphasizing the requirements of flux quantization, as well as their non-supersymmetric companions. In particular, we obtain a no-go result for de Sitter solutions at string tree level, and, exploiting the enhanced leverage of the N=2 setup, provide a preliminary analysis of the …
We consider string theory compactifications of the form AdS4 x M6 with orientifold six-planes, where M6 is a six-dimensional compact space that is either a nilmanifold or a coset. For all known solutions of this type we obtain the four-dimensional N=1 low energy effective theory by computing the superpotential, the Kaehler potential and the mass spectrum for the light moduli. For the nilmanifold examples we perform a cross-check on the result for the mass spectrum by calculating it alternatively from a direct Kaluza-Klein reduction and find perfect agreement. We show that in all but one of the…
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for N=1 compactifications of (massive) IIA supergravity to AdS(4) in the language of SU(3) structures. We find new solutions characterized by constant dilaton and nonzero fluxes for all form fields. All fluxes are given in terms of the geometrical data of the internal compact space. The latter is constrained to belong to a special class of half-flat manifolds.
We consider compactifications of M-theory and type IIA string theory to four dimensions. For Minkowski space-time, a supergravity no-go theorem forbids flux supported in the internal space. We show how to evade this no-go theorem by exhibiting new sources of brane charge: in string theory, the basic physical phenomenon is the generation of new brane charges from D-branes in transverse fluxes. In M-theory, there is a new source of M5-brane charge from novel higher derivative couplings that involve fluxes as well as curvatures. We present some explicit orientifold examples with both N=1 and N=2 …
We consider 4-dimensional string models obtained by tensoring N=2 coset theories with non-diagonal modular invariants. We present results from a systematic analysis including moddings by discrete symmetries.
We propose a Matrix Theory approach to Romans' massive Type IIA supergravity. It is obtained by applying the procedure of Matrix Theory compactifications to Hull's proposal of the Massive Type IIA String Theory as M-Theory on a twisted torus. The resulting Matrix Theory is a super-Yang Mills theory on large N three-branes with a space dependent non-commutativity parameter, which is also independently derived by a T-duality approach. We give evidence showing that the energies of a class of physical excitations of the super-Yang Mills theory show the correct symmetry expected from Massive Type I…
We study slow-roll accelerating cosmologies arising from geometric compactifications of type IIA string theory on $T^{6}/(\mathbb{Z}_{2}\,\times\,\mathbb{Z}_{2})$. With the aid of a genetic algorithm, we are able to find quasi-de Sitter backgrounds with both slow-roll parameters of order $0.1$. Furthermore, we study their evolution by numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent equations of motion, and we show that they actually display a few e-folds of accelerated expansion. Finally, we comment on their perturbative reliability.
We study the conformal field theory dual of the type IIA flux compactification model of DeWolfe, Giryavets, Kachru and Taylor, with all moduli stabilized. We find its central charge and properties of its operator spectrum. We concentrate on the moduli space of the conformal field theory, which we investigate through domain walls in the type IIA string theory. The moduli space turns out to consist of many different branches. We use Bezout's theorem and Bernstein's theorem to enumerate the different branches of the moduli space and estimate their dimension.
This is a summary of arXiv:0806.3458, where the low energy effective theory of type IIA AdS_4 N=1 flux compactifications on nilmanifolds and cosets has been analyzed. We compute the superpotential, the Kähler potential and the mass spectrum for the light moduli. For the nilmanifold examples we perform a cross-check on the result for the mass spectrum by calculating it from a direct Kaluza-Klein reduction.
Diaconescu, Moore and Witten proved that the partition function of type IIA string theory coincides (to the extent checked) with the partition function of M-theory. One of us (Kriz) and Sati proposed in a previous paper a refinement of the IIA partition function using elliptic cohomology and conjectured that it coincides with a partition function coming from F-theory. In this paper, we define the geometric term of the F-theoretical effective action on type IIA compactifications. In the special case when the first Pontrjagin class of spacetime vanishes, we also prove a version of the Kriz-Sati …
We establish the precise correspondence between Type-IIA flux compactifications preserving an exact or spontaneously broken N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions, and gaugings of their effective N=4 supergravities. We exhibit the explicit map between fluxes and Bianchi identities in the higher-dimensional theory and generalized structure constants and Jacobi identities in the reduced theory, also detailing the origin of gauge groups embedded at angles in the duality group. We present AdS4 solutions of the massive Type-IIA theory with spontaneous breaking to N=1, at small string coupling and lar…
We propose a candidate for the dual (in the weak/strong coupling sense) of the six-dimensional heterotic string compactification constructed recently by Chaudhuri, Hockney and Lykken. It is a type IIA string theory compactified on an orbifold $K3/Z_2$, where the $Z_2$ action involves an involution of $K3$ with fixed points, and also has an embedding in the U(1) gauge group associated with the Ramond-Ramond sector of the type IIA string theory. This introduces flux of the U(1) gauge field concentrated at the orbifold points. This construction provides an explicit example where the dual of a sup…
We study compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds that are mirror to a subset of the type IIB LARGE-volume models. A combination of flux, alpha' corrections and non-perturbative effects stabilises the moduli in a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum. This vacuum has the feature that the (ten-dimensional) string coupling is exponentially small which can naturally lead to a TeV supersymmetry breaking scale with an intermediate string scale. The AdS vacuum can be uplifted to a dS one through the introduction of D6 branes, and complex-structure modular inflation can be realised…
We introduce an ansatz which allows us to solve the supersymmetry equations for warped N=1 AdS4 type II supergravity compactifications of general SU(3)xSU(3) structure. As a byproduct we obtain a set of necessary conditions which every supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum should obey. The case of AdS4 compactifications of IIB on manifolds of static SU(2) structure is examined in detail. Several examples of solutions are presented. In the limit of four-dimensional Minkowski space, we present examples of supersymmetric IIB warped compactifications with partially localized NS5- and D5-branes. We also prese…
We describe a simple class of type IIA string compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds where background fluxes generate a potential for the complex structure moduli, the dilaton, and the Kähler moduli. This class of models corresponds to gauged N=2 supergravities, and the potential is completely determined by a choice of gauging and by data of the N=2 Calabi-Yau model - the prepotential for vector multiplets and the quaternionic metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space. Using mirror symmetry, one can determine many (though not all) of the quantum corrections which are relevant in these model…
We study static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with one vector multiplet and one hyper-tensor multiplet. This is derived from massive type IIA theory compactified on the nearly-Kahler coset space G2/SU(3). It is well-known that the Romans' mass parameter yields the Stuckelberg-type deformation of the gauge field strengths in the four-dimensional system. This deformation requires that all the (covariant) derivatives of the scalar fields must vanish and the two-form field is closed. It turns out that charged solutions are forbidden. This i…
We derive the effective N=1, D=4 supergravity for the seven main moduli of type IIA orientifolds with D6 branes, compactified on T^6/(Z_2xZ_2) in the presence of general fluxes. We illustrate and apply a general method that relates the N=1 effective Kahler potential and superpotential to a consistent truncation of gauged N=4 supergravity. We identify the correspondence between various admissible fluxes, N=4 gaugings and N=1 superpotential terms. We construct explicit examples with different features: in particular, new IIA no-scale models and a model which admits a supersymmetric AdS_4 vacuum …
We attempt to find a rigorous formulation for the massive type IIA orientifold compactifications of string theory introduced in hep-th/0505160. An approximate double T-duality converts this background into IIA string theory on a twisted torus, but various arguments indicate that the back reaction of the orientifold on this geometry is large. In particular, an AdS calculation of the entropy suggests a scaling appropriate for N M2-branes, in a certain limit of the compactification, though not the one studied in hep-th/0505160. The M-theory lift of this specific regime is not 4 dimensional. We su…
This letter discusses the orientifold projection of the quantum corrections to type IIA strings compactified on rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds. It is shown that N=2 membrane instanton effects give a holomorphic contribution to the superpotential, while the perturbative corrections enter into the Kahler potential. At the level of the scalar potential the corrections to the Kahler potential give rise to a positive energy contribution similar to adding anti-D3-branes in the KKLT scenario. This provides a natural mechanism to lift an AdS vacuum to a meta-stable dS vacuum.
The duality symmetry group of the cosets ${\textstyle SU(n,1)\over \textstyle SU(n)\otimes U(1)}$, which describe the moduli space of a two-dimensional subspace of an orbifold model with $(n-1)$ complex Wilson lines moduli, is discussed. The full duality group and its explicit action on the moduli fields are derived.
The ten-dimensional type IIA string effective action with cosmological constant term is dimensionally reduced on a d-dimensional torus to derive lower dimensional effective action. The symmetries of the reduced effective action are examined. It is shown that the resulting six-dimensional theory does not remain invariant under $SO(4,4)$ symmetry whereas the reduced action, in the absence of the cosmological constant respects the symmetry as was shown by Sen and Vafa. New class of black hole solutions are obtained in five and four dimensions in the presence of cosmological constant. For the six-…
We consider the most general form for eleven dimensional supersymmetry compatible with on-shell superfields. This allows for the introduction of a conformal Spin(1,10) connection. In eleven dimensional Minkowski space this modification is trivial and can be removed by a field redefinition, however, upon compactification on S^1 it is possible to introduce a non-trivial `Wilson line'. The resulting ten dimensional supergravity has massive 1-form and 3-form potentials and a cosmological constant. This theory does not possess a supersymmetric eightbrane soliton but it does admit a supersymmetric n…
We investigate the effective theory of type IIA string theory on six-dimensional orientifold backgrounds with SU(2)-structure. We focus on the case of orientifolds with O6-planes, for which we compute the bosonic effective action in the supergravity approximation. For a generic SU(2)-structure background, we find that the low-energy effective theory is a gauged N=2 supergravity where moduli in both vector and hypermultiplets are charged. Since all these supergravities descend from a corresponding N=4 background, their scalar target space is always a quotient of a SU(1,1)/U(1) x SO(6,n)/SO(6)xS…
We find AdS5 solutions holographically dual to compactifications of six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric field theories on Riemann surfaces with punctures. We simplify a previous analysis of supersymmetric AdS5 IIA solutions, and with a suitable Ansatz we find explicit solutions organized in three classes, where an O8--D8 stack, D6- and D4-branes are simultaneously present, localized and partially localized. The D4-branes are smeared over the Riemann surface and this is interpreted as the presence of a uniform distribution of punctures. For the first class we identify the corresponding six-d…
The field identification problem, including fixed point resolution, is solved for the non-hermitian symmetric $N=2$ superconformal coset theories. Thereby these models are finally identified as well-defined modular invariant CFTs. As an application, the theories are used as subtheories in tensor products with $c=9$, which in turn are taken as the inner sector of heterotic superstring compactifications. All string theories of this type are classified, and the chiral ring as well as the number of massless generations and anti-generations are computed with the help of the extended Poincare polyno…
We study the duality between four-dimensional N=2 compactifications of heterotic and type IIA string theories. Via adiabatic fibration of the duality in six dimensions, type IIA string theory compactified on a K3-fibred Calabi-Yau threefold has a potential heterotic dual compactification. This adiabatic picture fails whenever the K3 fibre degenerates into multiple components over points in the base of the fibration. Guided by monodromy, we identify such degenerate K3 fibres as solitons generalizing the NS5-brane in heterotic string theory. The theory of degenerations of K3 surfaces can then be…
According to the recent proposal by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions has a 't Hooft limit whose holographic dual is described by type IIA superstings on AdS_4 x CP^3 background. We argue that the Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 with kappa-symmetry partially fixed can be understood as a coset sigma-model on the same space supplied with a proper Wess-Zumino term. We construct the corresponding sigma-model Lagrangian and show that it is invariant under a local fermionic symmetry which for generi…
We study cosmological properties of type IIA compactifications on orientifolds of SU(3)-structure manifolds with non-vanishing geometric flux. These compactifications give rise to effective 4D N=1 supergravity theories that do not fall under some recently-proven no-go theorems against de Sitter vacua and slow-roll inflation. Focusing on a well-understood class of models based on coset spaces, however, we can use a refined no-go theorem that rules out de Sitter vacua and slow-roll inflation in all but one case. The refined no-go theorem uses the dilaton and a specific linear combination of the …
We extend the investigation of special toroidal compactifications of heterotic string theory for which the half-BPS states provide representations of subgroups of the Conway group. We also explore dual descriptions of these theories and find that they are all linked to either F-theory or type IIA string theory on K3 surfaces with symplectic automorphism groups that are the same Conway subgroups as those of the heterotic dual. The matching with type IIA K3 dual theories includes both the matching of symmetry groups and a comparison between the Narain lattice on the heterotic side and the cohomo…
In this paper we investigate in detail the correspondence between E10 and Romans' massive deformation of type IIA supergravity. We analyse the dynamics of a non-linear sigma model for a spinning particle on the coset space E10/K(E10) and show that it reproduces the dynamics of the bosonic as well as the fermionic sector of the massive IIA theory, within the standard truncation. The mass deformation parameter corresponds to a generator of E10 outside the realm of the generators entering the usual D=11 analysis, and is naturally included without any deformation of the coset model for E10/K(E10).…
We describe three analytic classes of infinitely many AdS_d supersymmetric solutions of massive IIA supergravity, for d = 7, 5, 4. The three classes are related by simple universal maps. For example, the AdS_7 x M_3 solutions (where M_3 is topologically S^3) are mapped to AdS_5 x Sigma_2 x M'_3, where Sigma_2 is a Riemann surface of genus g >= 2 and the metric on M'_3 is obtained by distorting M_3 in a certain way. The solutions can have localized D6 or O6 sources, as well as an arbitrary number of D8-branes. The AdS_7 case (previously known only numerically) is conjecturally dual to an NS5-D6…
We apply the coset character identities (generalization of Jacobi's abstruse identity) to compact and noncompact Gepner models. In the both cases, we prove that the partition function actually vanishes due to the spacetime supersymmetry. In the case of the compact models and discrete parts of the noncompact models, the partition function includes the expected vanishing factor. But the character identities used to the continuous part of the noncompact models suggest that these models have twice as many supersymmetry as expected. This fact is an evidence for the conjecture that the holographical…
We construct new families of non-supersymmetric sourceless type IIA AdS4 vacua on those coset manifolds that also admit supersymmetric solutions. We investigate the spectrum of left-invariant modes and find that most, but not all, of the vacua are stable under these fluctuations. Generically, there are also no massless moduli.
We analyse type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds with backgroud fluxes, taking into account the effect of perturbative $α'$-corrections. In particular, we consider the $α'$-corrections that modify the metrics in the Kähler sector of the compactification. As it has been argued in the literature, including such $α'$-corrections allows to construct the mirror duals of type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications, in which the effect of flux backreaction is under control. We compute the $α'$-corrected scalar potential generated by the presence of RR and NS fluxes, and reformulate it as a bilinear of the …
We study four-dimensional heterotic flux vacua with N=2 spacetime supersymmetry. A worldsheet perspective is used to clarify quantization conditions associated to the fluxes and the constraints these place on the moduli spaces of resulting compactifications. We propose that these vacua fit naturally in the context of heterotic/IIA duality as heterotic duals to compactifications on K3-fibered but not elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds. We present some examples of such potential dual pairs.
We present the Green-Schwarz action for Type IIA strings on $AdS_4\times CP^3$. The action is based on a $\Zop_4$ automorphism of the coset $OSp(4|6)/(SO(1,3)\times SU(3)\times U(1))$. The equations of motion admit a representation in terms of a Lax connection, showing that the system is classically integrable.
We review some of the features of Type IIA compactifications in the presence of fluxes. In particular, the case of $T^6/(Ω(-1)^{F_L} σ)$ orientifolds with RR, NS and metric fluxes is considered. This has revealed to possess remarkable properties such as vacua with all the closed string moduli stabilized, null or negative contributions to the RR tadpoles or supersymmetry on the branes enforced by the closed string background. In this way, Type IIA compactifications with non trivial fluxes seem to constitute a new window into the building of semi-realistic models in String Theory.
We look at the vertical dimensional reduction of the supermembrane of M-theory to the D2-brane of Type IIA string theory. Our approach considers the soliton solutions of the two low energy field limits, D=11 and D=10 Type IIA supergravities, rather than the worldvolume actions. It is thus necessary to create a periodic array. The standard Kaluza-Klein procedure requires that the brane is smeared over a transverse direction, but we will keep the dependence on the compactification coordinate, seeing how the eleventh dimension comes into play when we close up on the D2-brane.
The four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theories arising in compactifications of type IIA and type IIB on generalized orientifold backgrounds with background fluxes are discussed. The Kahler potentials are derived for reductions on SU(3) structure orientifolds and shown to consist of the logarithm of the two Hitchin functionals. These are functions of even and odd forms parameterizing the geometry of the internal manifold, the B-field and the dilaton. The superpotentials induced by background fluxes and the non-Calabi-Yau geometry are determined by a reduction of the type IIA and type IIB fermio…
The compactification of type IIA superstring on n-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds is discussed. In particular, a conjecture is given for type IIA extremal p-dimensional black brane attractors corresponding to Ads_{p+2}\times S^{8-2n-p} horizon geometries.
In this paper we study the heterotic type IIA duality when fluxes are turned on. We show that many of the known fluxes are dual to each other and claim that certain fluxes on the heterotic side require that the type IIA picture is lifted to M or even F-theory compactifications with geometric fluxes.
We first review standard results of the compactification of type IIA and IIB supergravities on a Calabi-Yau threefold and illustrate mirror symmetry. Then we compactify the same theories on a class of generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds called Half-flat. We obtain the scalar potential, and we show that type IIA on a Half-flat manifold is mirror symmetric to type IIB on a Calabi-Yau threefold with electric NS-fluxes turned on. In the last part, we compute the full equations of motion for N=4 supergravity in central charge superspace with the graviphotons identified as central charge components of …
We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computat…
We identify type IIA orientifolds that are dual to M-theory compactifications on manifolds with G_2-holonomy. We then discuss the construction of crosscap states in Gepner models. (Based on a talk presented by S.G. at PASCOS 2003 held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai during Jan. 3-8, 2003.)
In this talk we investigate the symmetry under E10 of Romans' massive type IIA supergravity. We show that the dynamics of a spinning particle in a non-linear sigma model on the coset space E10/K(E10) reproduces the bosonic and fermionic dynamics of massive IIA supergravity, in the standard truncation. In particular, we identify Romans' mass with a generator of E10 that is beyond the realm of the generators of E10 considered in the eleven-dimensional analysis, but using the same, underformed sigma model. As a consequence, this work provides a dynamical unification of the massless and massive ve…
Using sigma-model approach, we study a class of coset spaces with torsion which compactify the D=26 closed bose-string theory. Requiring also that massless chiral fermions arise from the geometry/topology of coset space, we are left with the unique possibility: it implies D=14 subcritical dimensions and the isometry group G_2 X G_2.
We investigate whether 4-dimensional static and cosmological Lifshitz solutions can be found from deforming the existing (A)dS_4 compactifications in IIA and IIA* supergravity. Using a well motivated compactification Ansatz on SU(3)-structure manifolds with 19 undetermined parameters we demonstrate that this is not the case in ordinary IIA supergravity, thereby generalising previous nogo results in different ways. On the other hand, for IIA* we construct explicit cosmological Lifshitz solutions. We also consider solutions with non-constant scalars and are able to find simple static and cosmolo…
Motivated by the M-theory compactification physics, we study a type IIA superstring quiver model with an open string axion field associated with the U(1)_{PQ} Peccei-Quinn global symmetry using D6-brane physics. This realization extends the symmetry of the SM-Like and contributes to the mediation of the electroweak symmetry breaking. The associated axion energy scales are approached in terms of D2 and D6-branes in type IIA compactifications on Calabi-Yau threeforlds. Using the fermion mass scales as well as string theory results, the allowed axion window is discussed in terms of intersecting D…
We consider the compactification of the IIA string to (1+1) dimensions on non-compact 4-folds that are ALE fibrations. Supersymmetry requires that the compactification include 4-form fluxes, and a particular class of these models has been argued by Gukov, Vafa and Witten to give rise to a set of perturbed superconformal coset models that also have a Landau-Ginzburg description. We examine all these ADE models in detail, including the exceptional cosets. We identify which perturbations are induced by the deformation of the singularity, and compute the Landau-Ginzburg potentials exactly. We also…
The Riemannian geometry of coset spaces is reviewed, with emphasis on its applications to supergravity and M-theory compactifications. Formulae for the connection and curvature of rescaled coset manifolds are generalized to the case of nondiagonal Killing metrics. The example of the N^{010} spaces is discussed in detail. These are a subclass of the coset manifolds N^{pqr}=G/H = SU(3) x U(1)/U(1) x U(1), the integers p,q,r characterizing the embedding of H in G. We study the realization of N^{010} as G/H=SU(3) x SU(2)/U(1) x SU(2) (with diagonal embedding of the SU(2) \in H into G). For a parti…
In the Matrix theories compactified on the $d$ dimensional torus with $d = 5, 6, 7$ which are described by the theories of D$d$-branes in the type IIA or IIB theory on the $d$ dimensional dual torus we analyze the BPS bound states of the background D$d$-brane with other objects by taking the matrix theory limit. Through the Nahm duality transformation the flux and the momentum multiplets for these BPS states are shown to be associated with the black holes and the black strings respectively from the viewpoint of the weakly coupled type IIA string theory compactified on the $d-1$ dimensional tor…
In this paper we study K3 compactification of ten-dimensional massive type IIA theory with all possible Ramond-Ramond background fluxes turned on. The resulting six-dimensional theory is a new massive (gauged) supergravity with an action that is manifestly invariant under an O(4,20) / (O(4) times O(20)) duality symmetry. We discover that this six-dimensional theory interpolates between vacua of ten-dimensional massive IIA supergravity and vacua of massless IIA supergravity with appropriate background fluxes turned on. This in turn suggests a new 11-dimensional interpretation for the massive ty…
We investigate whether cosmological inflation is possible in a class of flux compactifications of type IIA strings on rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds, when all perturbative string corrections are taken into account. We confine ourselves to the universal hypermultiplet and an abelian vector multiplet, representing matter in four dimensions. Since all axions can be stabilized by D-instantons, we choose dilaton and a Kähler modulus as the only running scalars. Though positivity of their scalar potential can be achieved, we find that there is no slow roll ($\varepsilon > 2$ and $η>2$), and no Graceful …
We present the study of type II A flux vacua and their M-theory duals for compactification on a class of Calabi-Yau orientifolds. The Kaehler potential is derived from toroidal compactifications and the superpotential contains a contribution from non-Abelian gauge degrees of freedoms. We obtain complete stabilisation of the moduli. We found one supersymmetric minimum and several non supersymmetric ones. Consistency of the analysis constrains the parameters of the models in a finite region containing a finite, although very large, number of flux vacua. From the M-theory side, we found some diff…
We examine T-duality transformations for supersymmetric strings with target space geometry with compact abelian isometries. We consider the partition function of these models and we show that although T-duality is not a symmetry, due to an anomaly, it relates type IIA to type IIB strings. In this way we extend the corresponding result for toroidal compactification to the general case of non-trivial backgrounds with abelian isometries and for world sheets of any genera.
Scherk-Schwarz compactification in string theory can be defined as orbifolding by an R symmetry, a symmetry that acts differently on bosons and fermions. Such a symmetry can arise in many situations, including toroidal and orbifold compactifications, as well as smooth Calabi-Yau spaces. If the symmetry acts freely then for large radius there are no tachyons in the spectrum. We focus mainly on stabilization by fluxes, and give examples with all moduli stabilized where the coupling is small and the internal manifold is large. Such models appear to be perturbatively stable with supersymmetry brok…
We study compactifications of type IIA supergravity on six-dimensional manifolds with SU(2) structure and compute the low-energy effective action in terms of the non-trivial intrinsic torsion. The consistency with gauged N=4 supergravity is established and the gauge group is determined. Depending on the structure of the intrinsic torsion, antisymmetric tensor fields can become massive.
