We consider the Ising model on a cylindrical lattice of L columns, with fixed-spin boundary conditions on the top and bottom rows. The spontaneous magnetization can be written in terms of partition functions on this lattice. We show how we can use the Clifford algebra of Kaufman to write these partition functions in terms of L by L determinants, and then further reduce them to m by m determinants, where m is approximately L/2. In this form the results can be compared with those of the Ising case of the superintegrable chiral Potts model. They point to a way of calculating the spontaneous magnetization of that more general model algebraically.
A new algebraic method is developed to reduce the size of the transfer matrix of Ising and three-state Potts ferromagnets, on strips of width r sites of square and triangular lattices. This size reduction has been set up in such a way that the maximum eigenvalues of both the reduced and original transfer matrices became exactly the same. In this method we write the original transfer matrix in a special blocked form in such a way that the sums of row elements of a block of the original transfer matrix be the same. The reduced matrix is obtained by replacing each block of the original transfer m…
Critical temperature of quasi-one-dimensional general-spin Ising ferromagnets is investigated by means of the cluster Monte Carlo method performed on infinite-length strips, L times infty or L times L times infty. We find that in the weak interchain coupling regime the critical temperature as a function of the interchain coupling is well-described by a chain mean-field formula with a reduced effective coordination number, as the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets recently reported by Yasuda et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 217201 (2005)]. It is also confirmed that the effective coordination numbe…
At zero temperature, two-dimensional Ising spin glasses are known to fall into several universality classes. Here we consider the scaling at low but non-zero temperature and provide numerical evidence that $η\approx 0$ and $ν\approx 3.5$ in all cases, suggesting a unique universality class. This algebraic (as opposed to exponential) scaling holds in particular for the $\pm J$ model, with or without dilutions and for the plaquette diluted model. Such a picture, associated with an exceptional behavior at T=0, is consistent with a real space renormalization group approach. We also explain how the…
In terms of the $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ loop algebra and the algebraic Bethe-ansatz method, we derive the invariant subspace associated with a given Ising-like spectrum consisting of $2^{r}$ eigenvalues of the diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrix of the superintegrable chiral Potts (SCP) model with arbitrary inhomogeneous parameters. We show that every regular Bethe eigenstate of the $τ_2$-model leads to an Ising-like spectrum and is an eigenvector of the SCP transfer matrix which is given by the product of two diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrices with a constraint on the spectral parameters. We…
We study the class of non-holonomic power series with integer coefficients that reduce, modulo primes, or powers of primes, to algebraic functions. In particular we try to determine whether the susceptibility of the square-lattice Ising model belongs to this class, and more broadly whether the susceptibility is a solution of a differentially algebraic equation. Initial results on Tutte's non-linear ordinary differential equation (ODE) and other simple quadratic non-linear ODEs suggest that a large set of differentially algebraic power series solutions with integer coefficients might reduce to …
Ground state and thermodynamics of geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two different but topologically related triangles-in-triangles lattices is investigated in particular. A rigorous mapping based on generalized star-triangle transformations enables one to derive exact analytical results for the free and internal energy, spontaneous magnetization, entropy and specific heat from the known exact results for the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that several unconventional quantum ordered and disordered phases may become the g…
The recently proposed reduction method is applied to the Edwards-Anderson model on bond-diluted square lattices. This allows, in combination with a graph-theoretical matching algorithm, to calculate numerically exact ground states of large systems. Low-temperature domain-wall excitations are studied to determine the stiffness exponent y_2. A value of y_2=-0.281(3) is found, consistent with previous results obtained on undiluted lattices. This comparison demonstrates the validity of the reduction method for bond-diluted spin systems and provides strong support for similar studies proclaiming ac…
Magnetoelastic properties of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations are examined within the framework of the harmonic approximation and decoration-iteration transformation. It is shown that the mutual interplay between quantum spin fluctuations and local fluctuations of lattice spacings enhances typical quantum features like the quantum reduction of the magnetization in the ground state of the quantum antiferromagnetic phase, while it does not affect the ground-state behaviour of the classical ferromagnetic phase by no m…
Hierarchical lattices that constitute spatially anisotropic systems are introduced. These lattices provide exact solutions for hierarchical models and, simultaneously, approximate solutions for uniaxially or fully anisotropic d=3 physical models. The global phase diagrams, with d=2 and d=1 to d=3 crossovers, are obtained for Ising, XY magnetic models and percolation systems, including crossovers from algebraic order to true long-range order.
We describe how to evaluate approximately various physical interesting quantities in random Ising systems by direct renormalization of a finite system. The renormalization procedure is used to reduce the number of degrees of freedom to a number that is small enough, enabling direct summing over the surviving spins. This procedure can be used to obtain averages of functions of the surviving spins. We show how to evaluate averages that involve spins that do not survive the renormalization procedure. We show, for the random field Ising model, how to obtain the "connected" 2-spin correlation funct…
The rigorous approach aimed at providing exact analytical results for hybrid classical-quantum models is elaborated on the grounds of generalized algebraic mapping transformations. This conceptually simple method allows one to obtain novel interesting exact results for the hybrid classical-quantum models, which may for instance describe interacting many-particle systems composed of the classical Ising spins and quantum Heisenberg spins, the localized Ising spins and delocalized electrons, or many other hybrid systems of a mixed classical-quantum nature.
Using a combinatorial method, the partition functions for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models have been derived for a square lattice of 16 sites in the presence of the magnetic field. A novel hierarchical method of enumeration of all the configurations for any arrangement of sites has been proposed. This enumeration has been executed by a systematic analysis of the appropriate diagrams without employing any algorithmic approach or computational tools. The resulting algebraic eqn in terms of the magnetic field and nearest neighbour interaction energies may then provide a methodology …
We provide a resolution of one of the long-standing puzzles in the theory of disordered systems. By reformulating the functional renormalization group (FRG) for the critical behavior of the random field Ising model in a superfield formalism, we are able to follow the associated supersymmetry and its spontaneous breaking along the FRG flow. Breaking is shown to occur below a critical dimension $d_{DR}\simeq 5.1$ and leads to a breakdown of the "dimensional reduction" property. We compute the critical exponents as a function of dimension and give evidence that scaling is described by three indep…
The geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices is exactly solved by combining the generalized star-triangle transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. The ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are rigorously calculated along with both sublattice magnetizations of the Ising and Heisenberg spins. It is evidenced that the Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices with two or three inter-connected triangles-in-triangles units displays in a highly frustrated region a quantum disorder irrespective of temperatur…
We study the time evolution of the local magnetization in the critical Ising chain in a transverse field after a sudden change of the parameters at a defect. The relaxation of the defect magnetization is algebraic and the corresponding exponent, which is a continuous function of the defect parameters, is calculated exactly. In finite chains the relaxation is oscillating in time and its form is conjectured on the basis of precise numerical calculations.

The usual setting for learning the structure and parameters of a graphical model assumes the availability of independent samples produced from the corresponding multivariate probability distribution. However, for many models the mixing time of the respective Markov chain can be very large and i.i.d. samples may not be obtained. We study the problem of reconstructing binary graphical models from correlated samples produced by a dynamical process, which is natural in many applications. We analyze the sample complexity of two estimators that are based on the interaction screening objective and th…
In this article we propose a general transformation for decorated spin models. The advantage of this transformation is to perform a direct mapping of a decorated spin model onto another effective spin thus simplifying algebraic computations by avoiding the proliferation of unnecessary iterative transformations and parameters that might otherwise lead to transcendental equations. Direct mapping transformation is discussed in detail for decorated Ising spin models as well as for decorated Ising-Heisenberg spin models, with arbitrary coordination number and with some constrained Hamiltonian's par…
We consider a variant of Glauber dynamics of Ising spins on a one-dimensional lattice, where each spin flips according to the relative state of the spin to its left. Moreover, each bond allows for two rates; flips which equalize nearest neighbor spins, and flips which "unequalize" them. In addition, the leftmost spin flips depending on the spin at that site. We explicitly calculate all eigenvalues of the transition matrix for all system sizes and conjecture a formula for the normalization factor of the model. We then analyze two limits of this model, which are analogous to ferromagnetic and an…
This book deals with the theory of generalized algebraic transformations, which is elaborated with the aim to provide a relatively simple theoretical tool that enables an exact treatment of diverse more complex lattice-statistical models. In addition to a brief historical account on the developments of this exact mapping method, the versatility of generalized algebraic transformations will be convincingly evidenced when providing exact results for two different families of exactly solvable models. The family of exactly solved Ising models brings a deeper insight into various aspects closely as…
Using a specially designed Monte Carlo algorithm with directed loops, we investigate the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet with coupling beyond nearest neighbour. We show that the first-order transition from the stripe state to the paramagnet can be split, giving rise to an intermediate nematic phase in which algebraic correlations coexist with a broken symmetry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the emergence of several properties of a more topological nature such as fractional edge excitations in the stripe state, the proliferation of double domain walls in the nematic phase, and the Kastel…
The coverage of vicinal, stepped surfaces with molecules is simulated with the help of a two-dimensional Ising model including local distortions and an Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier term at the steps. An effective two-spin model is capable to describe the main properties of this distorted Ising model. It is employed to analyze the behavior of the system close to the critical points. Within a well-defined regime of bonding strengths and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers we find a reduction of coverage (magnetization) at low temperatures due to the presence of the surface step. This results in a second, lo…
The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered qua…
We present the reduction of the correlation functions of the Ising model on the anisotropic square lattice to complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind, the extension of Kramers-Wannier duality to anisotropic correlation functions, and the linear differential equations for these anisotropic correlations. More precisely, we show that the anisotropic correlation functions are homogeneous polynomials of the complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind. We give the exact dual transformation matching the correlation functions and the dual correlation functio…
