The effect of the 16O-->18O substitution on the superconducting transition temperatures Tc of NaxCoO2.yH2O has been studied for several sets of samples. Each set has two kinds of samples, one with the oxygen sites in the CoO2 layers filled with 16O atoms and another with these sites partially substituted with 18O isotope. These two kinds of samples were prepared in parallel in whole preparation processes. For all the sample sets, we have not found any significant difference of the Tc values between the non-substituted and substituted samples, which indicates that the oxygen isotope effect is not appreciable in NaxCoO2.yH2O. The result, however, does not necessarily exclude the possibility of the phonon mechanism of the superconductivity, because the strong correlation effect suppresses the isotope effect as pointed out previously.
Palladium hydrides display the largest isotope effect anomaly known in literature. Replacement of hydrogen with the heavier isotopes leads to higher superconducting temperatures, a behavior inconsistent with harmonic theory. Solving the self-consistent harmonic approximation by a stochastic approach, we obtain the anharmonic free energy, the thermal expansion and the superconducting properties fully ab initio. We find that the phonon spectra are strongly renormalized by anharmonicity far beyond the perturbative regime. Superconductivity is phonon mediated, but the harmonic approximation largel…
We report the superconducting transition temperature of 6Li between 16-26 GPa, the lightest system to exhibit superconductivity to date. The superconducting phase diagram of 6Li is compared to that of 7Li through simultaneous measurement in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) 1, 2. Below 21.5 GPa, Li exhibits a direct, but unusually large isotope effect, while between 21.5-26 GPa, lithium shows an inverse superconducting isotope effect. The unusual dependence of the superconducting phase diagram of lithium on its atomic mass provides evidence that quantum solid effects dominate the low temperature prop…
We report the preparation method of, and boron isotope effect for MgB$_2$, a new binary intermetallic superconductor with a remarkably high superconducting transition temperature $T_c$($^{10}$B) = 40.2 K. Measurements of both temperature dependent magnetization and specific heat reveal a 1.0 K shift in $T_c$ between Mg$^{11}$B$_2$ and Mg$^{10}$B$_2$. Whereas such a high transition temperature might imply exotic coupling mechanisms, the boron isotope effect in MgB$_2$ is consistent with the material being a phonon-mediated BCS superconductor.
The Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) on the transition temperature T_c and the crystal structure was studied in the Fe chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_1-x by means of magnetization and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). The substitution of natural Fe (containing \simeq 92% of ^{56}Fe) by its lighter ^{54}Fe isotope leads to a shift of T_c of 0.22(5)K corresponding to an Fe-IE exponent of α_Fe=0.81(15). Simultaneously, a small structural change with isotope substitution is observed by NDP which may contribute to the total Fe isotope shift of T_c.
The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the zero-temperature superconducting energy gap Δ_0 was studied for a series of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} samples (0.0\leq x\leq0.45). The OIE on Δ_0 was found to scale with the one on the superconducting transition temperature. These experimental results are in quantitative agreement with predictions from a polaronic model for cuprate high-temperature superconductors and rule out approaches based on purely electronic mechanisms.
The impurity effects on the transition temperature Tc and the isotope effect are examined in multiband superconductors with magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities, where the effect of Coulomb repulsion is considered. It is shown that an internal transition of the superconducting state is induced by impurity doping, and that the transition is accompanied by a jump of the isotope-effect coefficient alpha. In particular, the transition is illustrated in a system with two electron bands. In some special cases, extended Abrikosov and Gor'kov (AG) equations for Tc and the expressions of the isotope-eff…
Recent experiments [Schaeffer 2015] have shown that lithium presents an extremely anomalous isotope effect in the 15-25 GPa pressure range. In this article we have calculated the anharmonic phonon dispersion of $\mathrm{^7Li}$ and $\mathrm{^6Li}$ under pressure, their superconducting transition temperatures, and the associated isotope effect. We have found a huge anharmonic renormalization of a transverse acoustic soft mode along $Γ$K in the fcc phase, the expected structure at the pressure range of interest. In fact, the anharmonic correction dynamically stabilizes the fcc phase above 25 GPa.…
We report the influence on the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ in doped SrTiO$_3$ of the substitution of the natural $^{16}$O atoms by the heavier isotope $^{18}$O. We observe that for a wide range of doping this substitution causes a strong ($\sim 50 \%$) enhancement of $T_c$. Also the magnetic critical field $H_{c2}$ is increased by a factor $\sim 2$. Such a strong impact on $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$, with a sign opposite to conventional superconductors, is unprecedented. The observed effect could be the consequence of strong coupling of the doped electrons to lattice vibrations (phonons…
Various unconventional isotope effects have been reported in high-temperature superconducting copper oxides which are beyond the scheme of BCS theory. Their origin is investigated within polaron theory which leads to a renormalization of the single particle energies and introduces a level shift here. It is found that the exponential squeezing of the second nearest neighbour hopping integral carries the correct isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as well as the one on the penetration depth. The average superconducting gap is predicted to have an isotope effect compa…
We present in this paper the thermodynamics of superconducting PdH and PdD under pressure. We make use of a general method to calculate the thermodynamics under pressure within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. We have considered the crystal lattice to be zincblende taking into account the experimental evidence for both PdH and PdD at temperatures below 55 K. We have studied, in particular, the changes induced by pressure in the critical temperature, $T_c$, in the specific heat jump at $T_c$, in the energy gap at $T=0K$, in the deviation function $D(t)$ and in the isotope effect coefficient, $α$. …
The isotope effect provided a crucial key to the development of the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) microscopic theory of superconductivity for conventional superconductors. In superconducting cooper oxides (cuprates) showing an unconventional type of superconductivity, the oxygen isotope effect is very peculiar: the exponential coefficient strongly depends on doping level. No consensus has been reached so far on the origin of the isotope effect in the cuprates. Here we show that the oxygen isotope effect in cuprates is in agreement with the bisoliton theory of superconductivity.
Recently, the discovery of room-temperature superconductivity (SC) was experimentally realized in the fcc phase of LaH$_{10}$ under megabar pressure. Specifically, the isotope effect of $T_{\rm c}$ was measured by the replacement of hydrogen (H) with deuterium (D), demonstrating a driving role of phonons in the observed room-temperature SC. Herein, based on the first-principles calculations within the harmonic approximation, we reveal that (i) the identical electron-phonon coupling constants of fcc LaH$_{10}$ and LaD$_{10}$ decrease monotonously with increasing pressure and (ii) the isotope ef…
The temperature dependencies of the coupled superconducting gaps, observed in Fe-As based superconducting compounds is calculated and a universal temperature scaling observed which is only present if the coupled order parameters both have s-wave symmetry. Predictions for possible isotope effects on the transition temperature are made if phonons are involved in the pairing or polaronic effects are of importance. Comparison to experimental data is given where these are available.
We investigate the effect of isotope substitution on the electronic spectral functions within a model where the charge carriers are coupled to bosonic charge-order (CO) fluctuations centered around some mean frequency ω_0 and with enhanced scattering at wave-vector q_c. It is shown that a mass dependence of ω_0 is not sufficient in order to account, especially at high energies, for the dispersion shifts experimentally observed in an optimally doped superconducting cuprate. We argue that isotope substitution induces a change of the spatial CO correlations which gives good account of the experim…
We discuss the possible connection between superconductivity (SC) and quantum critical points (QCP) for any QCP that is tunable by isotopic mass substitution. We find a distinct contribution to the isotope exponent, due to the proximity to a QCP, which can be used as an experimental signature for the relation between SC and QCP. The relation is demonstrated in a scenario where the SC pairing is due to modes related to a structural instability. Within this model the isotope exponent is derived in terms of microscopic parameters.
Using the large-$N$ limit of the $t$-$J$ model and allowing also for phonons and the electron-phonon interaction we study the isotope effect $α$ for coupling constants appropriate for YBCO. We find that $α$ has a minimum at optimal doping and increases strongly (slightly) towards the underdoped (overdoped) region. Using values for the electron phonon interaction from the local density approximation we get good agreement for $α$ as a function of $T_c$ and doping $δ$ with recent experimental data in YBCO. Our results strongly suggest that the large increase of $α$ in the underdoped region is (a)…
The effect of Carbon isotope substitution on T_c in the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi_3 is reported. Four independent groups of samples were synthesized and characterized. The average T_c for the Carbon-12 samples was found to be 7.12(2) K and the average T_c for the Carbon-13 samples was found to be 6.82(2) K. The resulting carbon isotope effect coefficient is alfa_C = 0.54(3). This indicates that carbon-based phonons play a critical role in the presence of superconductivity in this compound.
A maximum superconductive transition temperature $T_\textrm{C}$ = 203.5 K has recently been reported for a sample of the binary compound tri-hydrogen sulfide (H$_\textrm{3}$S) prepared at high pressure and with room temperature annealing. Measurements of $T_\textrm{C}$ for H$_\textrm{3}$S and its deuterium counterpart D$_\textrm{3}$S have suggested a mass isotope effect exponent $α$ with anomalous enhancements for reduced applied pressures. While widely cited for evidence of phonon-based superconductivity, the measured $T_\textrm{C}$ is shown to exhibit important dependences on the quality and…
Our paper on the isotope effect in high-temperature superconductors with cation substitutions presents a comprehensive analysis rooted completely in the experimental evidence. In this Reply we show that pair-breaking disorder, isotope effects, doping-induced variations in Tc and in the magnetic penetration depth, Coulomb's law, and Anderson's theorem are treated with correct physical and mathematical fundamentals. In contrast, the theory fostered in the Comment by Alexandrov and Zhao contradicts several specific experimental facts, eight of which are briefly discussed. Their Comment also uncri…
The present work describes the theoretical analysis of isotope effect coefficient as a function of transition temperature in two orbital per site model Hamiltonian in iron based superconducting system. The expression of isotope effect coefficient has been computed numerically and self-consistently by employing Green's function technique within the BCS-mean-field approximation. It is observed that the isotope effect coefficient increases with the increase of the hybridization while with the increase in Coulomb interaction it starts decreasing. On increasing the carrier density per site in two o…
The recent report of superconductivity under high pressure at the record transition temperature of Tc=203K in sulfur hydride has been identified as conventional in view of the observation of an isotope effect upon deuteration. Here it is demonstrated that conventional theories of superconductivity in the sense of BCS or Eliashberg formalisms can neither account for the observed values of Tc nor the pressure dependence of the isotope coefficient. The only way out of the dilemma is a multi-band approach of superconductivity where already small interband coupling suffices to achieve the high valu…
We have prepared oxygen isotope exchanged crystals of impurity-free YBCO with various oxygen concentents, and examined pure doping ($p$) dependance of isotope effect on superconducting transition temperature. With decreasing oxygen contents, the isotope exponent $α$ monotonously increases without any anomaly around $p = 1/8$. The monotonous increase in $α$ indicates that phonons are involved in the mechanism which causes the monotonous $T_c$ suppression with underdoping.
Doped strontium titanate SrTiO$_3$ (STO) is one of the most dilute superconductors known today. The fact that superconductivity occurs at very low carrier concentrations is one of the two reasons that the pairing mechanism is not yet understood, the other is the role played by the proximity to a ferroelectric instability. In undoped STO, ferroelectric order can in fact be stabilized by substituting $^{16}$O with its heavier isotope $^{18}$O. Here we explore the superconducting properties of doped and isotope-substituted SrTi$(^{18}$O$_{y}^{16}$O$_{1-y})_{3-δ}$ for $0\le y \le 0.81$ and carrier…
Using a large-N expansion we present and solve the linearized equation for the superconducting gap for a generalized t-J model which also contains phonons within a Holstein model. The leading Tc has d-wave symmetry with phonons giving a positive contribution to Tc. The corresponding isotope coefficient is very small at optimal doping and increases towards the classical value 1/2 with increasing dopings similar as in many cuprates.
We report the sulfur isotope effect on transition temperature in a BiS2-based superconductor Bi4O4S3. Polycrystalline samples of Bi4O4S3 were prepared using 32S and 34S isotope chemicals. From magnetization analyses, the isotope exponent (aS) was estimated as -0.1 < aS < 0.1. Although the Tc estimated from electrical resistivity was scattered as compared to those estimated from the magnetization, we observed no clear correlation between Tc and the isotope mass. The present results suggest that unconventional paring states are essential in Bi4O4S3.
We show that the unusual doping dependence of the isotope effects on transition temperature and zero temperature in - plane penetration depth naturally follows from the doping driven 3D-2D crossover, the 2D quantum superconductor to insulator transition (QSI) in the underdoped limit and the change of the relative doping concentration upon isotope substitution. Close to the QSI transition both, the isotope coefficient of transition temperature and penetration depth approach the coefficient of the relative dopant concentration, and its divergence sets the scale. These predictions are fully consi…
It is shown that the translation-invariant bipolaron theory of superconductivity can explain the dependence of the isotope coefficient in high-temperature superconductors on the critical temperature of a superconducting transition: in the case of strong electron-phonon interaction, the isotope coefficient is low when doping is optimal and high when it is weak. It is demonstrated that in the case of London penetration depth, the absolute value of the isotope coefficient behaves in the opposite way. A conclusion of the great role of non-adiabaticity in the case of weak doping is made. The criter…
We report that (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconductor (a transition temperature, Tc = 38 K) shows inverse Iron isotope effect (-0.18) (the sample including the larger atomic weight of Fe depicts higher Tc). Measurements of both temperature dependent magnetization and resistivity reveal a clear inverse shift by systematic studies on Tc using three types of Fe-isotopes (Fe-54, natural Fe and Fe-57). This indicates the first evidence of the inverse isotope effect in high-Tc superconductors. This atomic mass dependence on Tc implies the exotic coupling mechanism.
The currently available results of the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature T_c in Fe-based high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are highly controversial. The values of the Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) exponent α_Fe for various families of Fe-based HTS were found to be as well positive, as negative, or even be exceedingly larger than the BCS value α_BCS=0.5. Here we demonstrate that the Fe isotope substitution causes small structural modifications which, in turn, affect T_c. Upon correcting the isotope effect exponent for these structural effects, an almost unique value …
Due to the value of the isotope shift in sulfur hydrides, a phonon-mediated pairing scenario of superconductivity is generally accepted for these high-temperature superconductors which is consistent with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) framework. Knowing that a large electronic density of states enhances $T_c$, generalized Fermi surface topologies are used to increase it. A multi-band model within the BCS framework is proposed in this work for the description of sulfur hydride superconductors. This model is used to describe some properties of the $H_3S$ superconductor. Strong coupling effe…
The weak-coupling quantum phase diagrams of the one-dimensional (1D) Holstein-Hubbard and Peierls-Hubbard models are computed near half-filling, using a multi-step renormalization group technique. If strong enough, the electron-phonon interaction induces a spin gap. The spin gap, which determines the superconducting pairing energy, depends strongly on the band filling and decreases monotonically as the system is doped away from half-filling. However, the superconducting susceptibility exhibits a different doping dependence; it can vary non-monotonically with doping and exhibit a maximum at an …
We report the iron (Fe) isotope effect on the transition temperature (Tc) in the oxygen-deficient SmFeAsO_{1-y}, a 50 K-class Fe-based superconductor. For the optimally-doped samples with Tc = 54 K, change of the Fe average atomic mass (MFe) causes a negligibly small shift in Tc, with the Fe isotope coefficient (alphaFe) as small as -0.024 \pm 0.015. This result contrasts with the finite, inverse isotope shift observed in optimally-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2, indicating that the contribution of the electron-phonon interaction markedly differs between these two Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.
We have carried out measurements of the pressure dependence to 1.2 GPa of the oxygen isotope effect on $T_c$ in the high-$T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ using a clamp cell in a SQUID magnetometer. This compound lies close to, but just above, the 1/8$^{th}$ doping point where in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ marked anomalies in isotope effects occur. Both isotopes show the same very large pressure dependence of $T_c$ with the result that the isotope exponent remains low ($\sim$0.08) but increases slightly with increasing pressure. This is discussed in terms of stripe suppression, a competing …
We show that in anisotropic superconductors, falling at finite temperature into the 3D-XY- and at zero temperature into the 2D-XY-QSI universality class, the isotope effects on transition temperature, specific heat and magnetic penetration depths are not independent, but related by universal relations. The corresponding experimental data for cuprate superconductors reveals suggestive consistency with these relations. They imply a dominant role of fluctuations so that pair formation and pair condensation do not occur simultaneously. For this reason and due to the occurrence of the 2D-XY-QSI tra…
We investigate the effect of isotope substitution on the electron-phonon interaction in the multi-band superconductor MgB2 using tunable laser based Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The kink structure around 70 meV in the $σ$ band, which is caused by electron coupling to the E2g phonon mode, is shifted to higher binding energy by ~3.5 meV in Mg(10)B2 and the shift is not affected by superconducting transition. These results serve as the benchmark for investigations of isotope effects in known, unconventional superconductors and newly discovered superconductors where the origin of pai…
The planar oxygen isotope effect coefficient measured as a function of hole doping in the Pr- and La-doped YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and the Ni-doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (LSCO) superconductors quantitatively and qualitatively follows the form originally proposed by Kresin and Wolf, which was derived for polarons perpendicular to the superconducting planes. Interestingly, the inverse oxygen isotope effect coefficient at the pseudogap temperature also follows the same formula. These findings allow the conclusion that the superconductivity in YBCO and LSCO results from polarons or rather bipolarons in the Cu…
The isotope effect in the superconducting transition temperature is anomalous if the isotope coefficient $α<0$ or $α>1/2$. In this work, we show that such anomalous behaviors can naturally arise within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer framework if both phonon and non-phonon modes coexist. Different from the case of the standard Eliashberg theory (with only phonon) in which $α\le1/2$, the isotope coefficient can now take arbitrary values in the simultaneous presence of phonon and the other non-phonon mode. In particular, most strikingly, a pair-breaking phonon can give rise to large isotope coeffi…
Since the early days of the discovery of hole doped high-Tc cuprates, the variation of the oxygen isotope exponent (IE) with the number of doped holes, p, in the CuO2 planes has been a source of considerable debate. There is a growing acceptance in the high-Tc community that the mediating bosons leading to Cooper pairing have largely electronic character. At the same time there is an increasing acknowledgement that at some level the lattice-charge interactions might be important in cuprates. The experimentally observed substantially large IE over certain doping range always casts a shadow over…
We have measured the effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBCO. The frequency shift of the transverse optic phonons due to the substitution of O-16 by O-18 yields an isotope effect of the expected magnitude for copper-oxygen stretching modes with alpha=0.5 +- 0.1. The reflectance shoulder at 400 - 500 cm^-1 shows a much smaller exponent of alpha=0.1 +- 0.1 in the normal state and alpha=0.23+- 0.1 in the superconducting state. These observations suggest that the shoulder is of electronic origin and not due to a phonon mode as has been suggested recentl…
We report on high-precision measurements of the temperature dependence of the plane-^63Cu NQR line frequency nu_Q(Cu2) and the linewidth in normal and superconducting ^16O and ^18O exchanged YBa_2Cu_4O_8. Whereas nu_Q(Cu2) passes T_c very smoothly without a discontinuity either in value nor in slope, the linewidth increases in the normal conducting phase down to T_c and starts to decrease sharply in the superconducting phase to finally resume its high-temperature value of the normal phase. There is a well discernible oxygen isotope effect on the nu_Q(Cu2) temperature dependencies. The temperat…
The isotope coefficient $β$ of the magnetic penetration depth in the superconducting state is studied at T=0 for a $d$-CDW and a nodal metal model. Disregarding superconductivity the Fermi surface of the first model possesses arcs whereas the second model has no arcs. We show that a large increase of $β$ in the pseudogap region is generically incompatible with Fermi arcs in the pseudogap state. Thus only the second model shows a large increase of $β$ with decreasing doping. The required electron-phonon coupling is small and compatible with first-principles calculations based on the local densi…
In a prior study of the boron isotope effect on the transition temperature ($T_c$) of $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C ($R$ = Y, Lu) system, a positive isotope effect was observed, e.g., $T_{c}(^{10}B)> T_{c}(^{11}B)$. BCS theory predicts that the superconducting gap at zero temperature ($Δ_0$) is proportional to $T_c$. Therefore, the gap should also show a positive boron isotope effect. On the contrary, in an inelastic light scattering study, we report a negative boron isotope effect on the energy $Ω$ of the gap-like feature in B$_{2g}$ symmetry, e.g., $Ω(^{10}B)< Ω(^{11}B)$. The origin of the effect is discu…
In this paper, I study the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) in cuprates. I introduce a simple model that can explain experiments both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this theory, isotope substitution only affects the superfluid density, but not the pseudo-gap. Within the spin-charge separation picture, I argue that the spinon-phonon interaction is in the adiabatic limit, and therefore within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory, there is no isotope effect in the spinon mass renormalization. On the other hand, I show that the holon-phonon interaction is in the non-adiabatic limit. Therefore, the small …
We present a study of the superconducting transition in MgB2 using the ab-initio pseudopotential density functional method and the fully anisotropic Eliashberg equation. Our study shows that the anisotropic Eliashberg equation, constructed with ab-initio calculated momentum-dependent electron-phonon interaction and anharmonic phonon frequencies, yields an average electron-phonon coupling constant lambda = 0.61, a transition temperature Tc = 39 K, and a boron isotope-effect exponent alphaB = 0.31 with a reasonable assumption of mu* = 0.12. The calculated values for Tc, lambda, and alphaB are in…
In order to clarify that the Cooper pair in $β$-pyrochlore oxides is mediated by anharmonic oscillation of guest atom, i.e., rattling, we propose an experiment to detect anomalous isotope effect. In the formula of $T_{\rm c} \propto M^{-η}$, where $T_{\rm c}$ is superconducting transition temperature and $M$ denotes mass of the oscillator, it is found that the exponent $η$ is increased with the increase of anharmonicity of a potential for the guest atom. We predict that $η$ becomes larger than 1/2 in rattling-induced superconductor, in sharp contrast to $η=1/2$ for weak-coupling superconductiv…
Oxygen-isotope effect has been investigated in a recently discovered superconductor Sr_{0.4}K_{0.6}BiO_{3}. This compound has a distorted perovskite structure and becomes superconducting at about 12 K. Upon replacing ^{16}O with ^{18}O by 60-80%, the T_c of the sample is shifted down by 0.32-0.50 K, corresponding to an isotope exponent of alpha_{O} = 0.40(5). This isotope exponent is very close to that for a similar bismuthate superconductor Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3} with T_c = 30 K. The very distinctive doping and T_c dependencies of alpha_{O} observed in bismuthates and cuprates suggest that bism…
The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic penetration depth λ_{ab}(0) in optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} and La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and in slightly underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and Y_{0.8}Pr_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. A substantial OIE on λ_{ab}(0) with an OIE exponent β_O=-d\lnλ_{ab}(0)/d\ln M_O\approx - 0.2 (M_O is the mass of the oxygen isotope), and a small OIE on the transition temperature T_c with an OIE exponent α_O=-d\ln T_{c}/d \ln M_O\simeq0.02 to 0.1 were observed. The observation of a substantial isotope effect on λ…

A theory of a pseudogap phase of high-temperature superconductors where current carriers are translation invariant bipolarons is developed. A temperature T* of a transition from a pseudogap phase to a normal one is calculated. For the temperature of a transition to the pseudogap phase, the isotope coefficient is found. It is shown that the results obtained, in particular, the possibility of negative values of the isotope coefficient are consistent with the experiment. New experiments on the influence of the magnetic field on the isotope coefficient are proposed.
We report the boron isotope effect on the E2g phonon mode by micro-Raman spectroscopy on the ternary Mg1-xAlxB2 system, synthesized with pure isotopes 10B and 11B. The isotope coefficient on the phonon frequency is near 0.5 in the full range decreasing near x = 0. The intraband electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, for the electrons in the sigma band, has been extracted from the E2g line-width and frequency softening. Tuning the Fermi energy near the electronic topological transition (ETT), where the sigma Fermi surface changes from 2D to 3D topology the E2g mode, shows the known Kohn anomaly on th…
Replacement of hydrogen by deuterium in palladium hydride results in higher superconducting temperatures and an anomalous isotope effect that has not been yet fully explained. In this work, we try a new approach to the explanation of the inverse isotope effect in PdH(D). Our approach introduces two new aspects. First, we took into account the experimental evidence that at temperatures below 50 K, the crystal structure of PdH and of PdD is zincblende. Second, we take into account not only the influence of the electron-phonon interaction but also the electron-electron interaction contribution to…
In a recent paper Yanagisawa et al. [1] claim from a theoretical analysis of a multi-channel multi-band superconductor model that an inverse isotope exponent on the superconducting transition temperature Tc can be realized in iron-based superconductors. Simultaneously, a subgroup of the authors of Ref. 1 performed the corresponding isotope effect experiment on (Ba, K)Fe2As2 by investigating the iron isotope exchange effect on Tc [2]. In accordance with their theoretical analysis they indeed report an unusually large sign reversed isotope exponent of α \simeq -0.18(3) which is in strong contras…
The effect of impurities on the isotope coefficient is studied theoretically in the framework of Abrikosov-Gor'kov approach generalized to account for both potential and spin-flip scattering in anisotropic superconductors. An expression for the isotope coefficient as a function of the critical temperature is obtained for a superconductor with an arbitrary contribution of spin-flip processes to the total scattering rate and an arbitrary degree of anisotropy of the superconducting order parameter, ranging from isotropic s-wave to d-wave and including anisotropic s-wave and mixed (s+d)-wave as pa…
It is shown that the empirical relations between transition temperature, normal state conductivity linearly extrapolated to the value at the transition temperature, zero temperature penetration depths, etc., as observed in a rich variety of cuprate superconductors, are remarkably consistent with the universal critical properties of anisotropic systems which fall into the 3D-XY universality class and undergo a crossover to a quantum critical point in 2D. The variety includes n- and p-type cuprates, comprises the underdoped and overdoped regimes and the consistency extends up to six decades in t…
H$_3$S is believed to the most possible high-temperature superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$) phase of hydrogen sulfide at $\sim$200 GPa. It's isotope substitution of hydrogen (H) by deuterium (D), however, shows an anomalous $T_{\text{c}}$ decrease of $\sim$100 K at 140 to 160 GPa, much larger than the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory prediction. Using ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD), we show that the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) influence the structures of H$_3$S and D$_3$S differently at finite temperatures and the interval when H$_3$S possesses the symmetric high $T_{\text{…
Large negative oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effects (OIE's) on the static spin-stripe ordering temperature T_so and the magnetic volume fraction V_m were observed in La_(2-x)Ba_xCuO_4 (x = 1/8) by means of muon spin rotation experiments. The corresponding OIE exponents were found to be alpha_(T_so) = -0.57(6) and alpha_(V_m) = -0.71(9), which are sign reversed to alpha_(T_c) = 0.46(6) measured for the superconducting transition temperature T_c. This indicates that the electron-lattice interaction is involved in the stripe formation and plays an important role in the competition between bulk superc…
