Let a_n(k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial Phi_n(x). As n ranges over the integers, a_n(k) assumes only finitely many values. For any such value v we determine the density of integers n such that a_n(k)=v. Also we study the average of the a_n(k). We derive analogous results for the kth Taylor coefficient of 1/Phi_n(x) (taken around x=0), the kth coefficient of the nth reciprocal cyclotomic polynomial. We formulate various open problems.
This paper presents a closed form polynomial expression for the binary cyclotomic polynomial. We contrast this against expressions for binary cyclotomic polynomials in (Lam and Leung 1996) and (Lenstra 1979).
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials. We formulate some basic properties of unitary cyclotomic polynomials and study how they are connected with cyclotomic, inclusion-exclusion and Kronecker polynomials. Further, we derive some related arithmetic function identities involving the unitary analog of the Dirichlet convolution.
In this paper, we list several interesting structures of cyclotomic polynomials: specifically relations among blocks obtained by suitable partition of cyclotomic polynomials. We present explicit and self-contained proof for all of them, using a uniform terminology and technique.
In this note, we give a shorter proof of the result of Zheng, Yu, and Pei on the explicit formula of inverses of generalized cyclotomic permutation polynomials over finite fields. Moreover, we characterize all these cyclotomic permutation polynomials that are involutions. Our results provide a fast algorithm (only modular operations are involved) to generate many classes of generalized cyclotomic permutation polynomials, their inverses, and involutions.
We present a method to deal with the values of polynomials of type $P(z)=\prod_{d\in D}(1-z^d)^{j_d}$ on the unit circle. We use it to improve the known bounds on various measures of coefficients of cyclotomic and similar polynomials.
We study a family of inverse ternary cyclotomic polynomials $Ψ_{pqr}$ in which $r\leφ(pq)$ is a positive linear combination of $p$ and $q$. We derive a formula for the height of such polynomial and characterize all flat polynomials in this family.
We study the explicit factorization of $2^n r$-th cyclotomic polynomials over finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $q, r$ are odd with $(r, q) =1$. We show that all irreducible factors of $2^n r$-th cyclotomic polynomials can be obtained easily from irreducible factors of cyclotomic polynomials of small orders. In particular, we obtain the explicit factorization of $2^n 5$-th cyclotomic polynomials over finite fields and construct several classes of irreducible polynomials of degree $2^{n-2}$ with fewer than 5 terms. The reciprocals of these irreducible polynomials are irreducible polynomials of …
Given a permutation polynomial of a large finite field, finding its inverse is usually a hard problem. Based on a piecewise interpolation formula, we construct the inverses of cyclotomic mapping permutation polynomials of arbitrary finite fields.
Given two cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n(x)$ and $Φ_m(x)$, $n\not= m$, we determine the minimal natural number k such that we can write $$k=a(x)Φ_n (x)+b(x)Φ_m(x),$$ with a(x) and b(x) integer polynomials.
This paper is concerned with so-called index $d$ generalized cyclotomic mappings of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, which are functions $\mathbb{F}_q\rightarrow\mathbb{F}_q$ that agree with a suitable monomial function $x\mapsto ax^r$ on each coset of the index $d$ subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^{\ast}$. We discuss two important rewriting procedures in the context of generalized cyclotomic mappings and present applications thereof that concern index $d$ generalized cyclotomic permutations of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and pertain to cycle structures, the classification of $(q-1)$-cycles and involutions, as well…
We investigate the polynomials $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} c_n(k)x^k$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} |c_n(k)| x^k$, where $c_n(k)$ denote the Ramanujan sums. We point out connections and analogies to the cyclotomic polynomials.
We present several approaches on finding necessary and sufficient conditions on $n$ so that $Φ_k(x^n)$ is irreducible where $Φ_k$ is the $k$-th cyclotomic polynomial.
We present a new bound on $A = \max_n |a_{pqr}(n)|$, where $a_{pqr}(n)$ are the coefficients of a ternary cyclotomic polynomial. We also prove that two consecutive coefficients of such a polynomial differ by at most one.
We get some results about the factorization of $ϕ_p(M) \in {\mathbb{F}}_2[x]$, where $p$ is a prime number, $ϕ_p$ is the corresponding cyclotomic polynomial and $M$ is a Mersenne prime (polynomial). By the way, we better understand the factorization of the sum of the divisors of $M^{2h}$, for a positive integer $h$.
The $k$-higher Mahler measure of a nonzero polynomial $P$ is the integral of $\log^k|P|$ on the unit circle. In this note, we consider Lehmer's question (which is a long-standing open problem for $k=1$) for $k>1$ and find some interesting formulae for 2- and 3-higher Mahler measure of cyclotomic polynomials.
A cyclotomic polynomial Phi_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd prime factors. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Eli Leher showed in 2007 that neighboring ternary cyclotomic coefficients differ by at most four. We show that, in fact, they differ by at most one. Consequently, the set of coefficients occurring in a ternary cyclotomic polynomial consists of consecutive integers. As an application we reprove in a simpler way a result of Bachman from 2004 on ternary cyclotomic po…
Two $q$-supercongruences of truncated basic hypergeometric series containing two free parameters are established by employing specific identities for basic hypergeometric series. The results partly extend two $q$-supercongruences that were earlier conjectured by the same authors and involve $q$-supercongruences modulo the square and the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial. One of the newly proved $q$-supercongruences is even conjectured to hold modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial.
Let a(n,k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial. The first two authors showed in part I that if m is a prime power and n and k range over the non-negative integers, then a(mn,k) assumes every integer value. Here this result is extended to the case where m is arbitrary. The proof use some properties of reciprocal cyclotomic polynomials (see arXiv:0709.1570).
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n^*(x)$. They can be written as certain products of cyclotomic poynomials. We study the case where $n$ has two or three distinct prime factors using numerical semigroups, respectively Bachman's inclusion-exclusion polynomials. Given $m\ge 1$ we show that every integer occurs as a coefficient of $Φ^*_{mn}(x)$ for some $n\ge 1$. Here $n$ will typically have many different prime factors. We also consider similar questions for the polynomials $(x^n-1)/Φ_n^*(x),$ the inverse unitary cyclotomic polyno…
Let $a(n, k)$ be the $k$-th coefficient of the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. Recently, Ji, Li and Moree \cite{JLM09} proved that for any integer $m\ge1$, $\{a(mn, k)| n, k\in\mathbb{N}\}=\mathbb{Z}$. In this paper, we improve this result and prove that for any integers $s>t\ge0$, $$\{a(ns+t, k)| n, k\in\mathbb{N}\}=\mathbb{Z}.$$
In this paper, by using the theory of circulant matrices we study some matrices over finite fields which involve the quadratic character and trinomial coefficients.
It is known that two consecutive coefficients of a ternary cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{pqr}(x)=\sum_k a_{pqr}(k)x^k$ differ by at most one. In this paper we give a criterion on $k$ to satisfy $|a_{pqr}(k)-a_{pqr}(k-1)|=1$. We use this to prove that the number of nonzero coefficients of the $n$th ternary cyclotomic polynomial is greater than $n^{1/3}$.
In this paper, we generalize Bernoulli-Goss polynomials, and give a criterion on the divisibility of zeta functions of cyclotomic function fields. As an application of our criterion, for a given polynomial $f(u)$, we prove that there are infinitely many cyclotomic function fields whose zeta polynomial is divided by $f(u)$.
In this paper, a new $q$-supercongruence with two free parameters modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial is obtained. Our main auxiliary tools are Watson's $_8ϕ_7$ transformation formula for basic hypergeometric series, the `creative microscoping' method recently introduced by Guo and Zudilin and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials. By taking suitable parameter substitutions in the established $q$-supercongruence, some nice congruences involving the Bernoulli numbers are derived.
Cyclotomic polynomials play an important role in several areas of mathematics and their study has a very long history, which goes back at least to Gauss (1801). In particular, the properties of their coefficients have been intensively studied by several authors, and in the last 10 years there has been a burst of activity in this field of research. This concise survey attempts to collect the main results regarding the coefficients of the cyclotomic polynomials and to provide all the relevant references to their proofs. Previous surveys on this topic were given by Lenstra (1979), Vaughan (1989),…
We show that polynomials associated with automatic sequences satisfy a certain recurrence relation when evaluated at a root of unity, which generalizes a result of Brillhart, Lomont and Morton on the Rudin--Shapiro polynomials. We study the minimal order of such a relation and the integrality of its coefficients.
Let p and r be two primes and n, m be two distinct divisors of pr. Consider the n-th and m-th cyclotomic polynomials. In this paper, we present lower and upper bounds for the coefficients of the inverse of one of them modulo the other one. We mention an application to torus-based cryptography.
A cyclotomic polynomial Φ_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd primes. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Here we establish some results and formulate some conjectures regarding the coefficients appearing in the polynomial family Φ_{pqr}(x) with p<q<r, p and q fixed and r a free prime.
By means of the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm, we prove a basic hypergeometric supercongruence modulo the fifth power of the cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_n(q)$. This result appears to be quite unique, as in the existing literature so far no basic hypergeometric supercongruences modulo a power greater than the fourth of a cyclotomic polynomial have been proved. We also establish a couple of related results, including a parametric supercongruence.
Let $n$ be an even positive integer with at most three distinct prime factors and let $\ze_n$ be a primitive $n$-th root of unity. In this study, we made an attempt to find the lowest-degree $0,1$-polynomial $f(x) \in \Q[x]$ having at least three terms such that $f(\ze_n)$ is a minimal vanishing sum of the $n$-th roots of unity.
We improve several recent results by Hong, Lee, Lee and Park (2012) on gaps and Bzdȩga (2014) on jumps amongst the coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials. Besides direct improvements, we also introduce several new techniques that have never been used in this area.
The maximum gap $g(f)$ of a polynomial $f$ is the maximum of the differences (gaps) between two consecutive exponents that appear in $f$. Let $Φ_{n}$ and $Ψ_{n}$ denote the $n$-th cyclotomic and $n$-th inverse cyclotomic polynomial, respectively. In this paper, we give several lower bounds for $g(Φ_{n})$ and $g(Ψ_{n})$, where $n$ is the product of odd primes. We observe that they are very often exact. We also give an exact expression for $g(Ψ_{n})$ under a certain condition. Finally we conjecture an exact expression for $g(Φ_{n})$ under a certain condition.
In this article, we provide a short and elementary proof of the following result: For $n \geq 3$ the middle coefficient of $Φ_n(x)$ is either zero (when $n$ is a power of $2$) or an odd integer.
Recently, Blanco-Chacón proved the equivalence between the Ring Learning With Errors and Polynomial Learning With Errors problems for some families of cyclotomic number fields by giving some upper bounds for the condition number $\operatorname{Cond}(V_n)$ of the Vandermonde matrix $V_n$ associated to the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial. We prove some results on the singular values of $V_n$ and, in particular, we determine $\operatorname{Cond}(V_n)$ for $n = 2^k p^\ell$, where $k, \ell \geq 0$ are integers and $p$ is an odd prime number.
We study the number of real critical points of a cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{n}(x)$, that is, the real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$. As usual, one can, without losing generality, restrict $n$ to be the product of distinct odd primes, say $p_{1}<\cdots<p_{k}$. We show that if the primes are "sufficiently separated" then there are exactly $2^{k}-1$ real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$ and each of them is simple.
We prove a two-parameter family of $q$-hypergeometric congruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. Crucial ingredients in our proof are George Andrews' multiseries extension of the Watson transformation, and a Karlsson--Minton type summation for very-well-poised basic hypergeometric series due to George Gasper. The new family of $q$-congruences is then used to prove two conjectures posed earlier by the authors.
Using some basic properties of the gamma function, we evaluate a simple class of infinite products involving Dirichlet characters as a finite product of gamma functions and, in the case of odd characters, as a finite product of sines. As a consequence we obtain evaluations of certain multiple $L$-series. In the final part of this paper we derive expressions for infinite products of cyclotomic polynomials, again as finite products of gamma or of sine functions.
Let $A_n$ denote the height of cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_n$, where $n$ is a product of $k$ distinct odd primes. We prove that $A_n \le ε_kϕ(n)^{k^{-1}2^{k-1}-1}$ with $-\logε_k\sim c2^k$, $c>0$. The same statement is true for the height $C_n$ of the inverse cyclotomic polynomial $Ψ_n$. Additionally, we improve on a bound of Kaplan for the maximal height of divisors of $x^n-1$, denoted by $B_n$. We show that $B_n<η_k n^{(3^k-1)/(2k)-1}$, with $-\log η_k \sim c3^k$ and the same $c$.
A unitary cyclotomic polynomial of order three is a polynomial of the form \[ Φ^*_{PQR}(x)=\frac{(x^{PQR}-1)(x^P-1)(x^Q-1)(x^R-1)}{(x^{PQ}-1)(x^{QR}-1)(x^{RP}-1)(x-1)}, \] where $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are powers of three distinct primes $p$, $q$ and $r$. Fixing any such prime triple generates a family of these polynomials corresponding to all possible choices of $P=p^a$, $Q=q^b$ and $R=r^c$. We study the coefficients of polynomials in such a family. In particular, we show that the coefficients of polynomials in every such family cover all of $\mathbb{Z}$.
Divisibility sequences are defined by the property that their elements divide each other whenever their indices do. The divisibility sequences that also satisfy a linear recurrence, like the Fibonacci numbers, are generated by polynomials that divide their compositions with every positive integer power. We completely characterize such polynomials in terms of their factorizations into cyclotomic polynomials using labeled Hasse diagrams, and construct new integer divisibility sequences based on them. We also show that, unlike the Fibonacci numbers, these non-classical sequences do not have the p…
We build a new theory for analyzing the coefficients of any cyclotomic polynomial by considering it as a gcd of simpler polynomials. Using this theory, we generalize a result known as periodicity and provide two new families of flat cyclotomic polynomials. One, of order 3, was conjectured by Broadhurst: $Φ_{pqr}(x)$ is flat where $p<q<r$ are primes and there is a positive integer $w$ such that $r\equiv\pm w\pmod{pq}$, $p\equiv1\pmod w$ and $q\equiv1\pmod{wp}$. The other is the first general family of order 4: $Φ_{pqrs}(x)$ is flat for primes $p,q,r,s$ where $q\equiv-1\pmod p$, $r\equiv\pm1\pmo…
Let l>=1 be an arbitrary odd integer and p,q and r primes. We show that there exist infinitely many ternary cyclotomic polynomials Φ_{pqr}(x) with l^2+3l+5<= p<q<r such that the set of coefficients of each of them consists of the p integers in the interval [-(p-l-2)/2,(p+l+2)/2]. It is known that no larger coefficient range is possible. The Beiter conjecture states that the cyclotomic coefficients a_{pqr}(k) of Φ_{pqr} satisfy |a_{pqr}(k)|<= (p+1)/2 and thus the above family contradicts the Beiter conjecture. The two already known families of ternary cyclotomic polynomials with an optimally la…
This paper investigates coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials theoretically and experimentally. We prove the following result. {{\em If $n=p_1\ldots p_k$ where $p_i$ are odd primes and $p_1<p_2<\ldots<p_r<p_1+p_2<p_{r+1}<\ldots<p_t$ with $t\geq 3$ odd, then the numbers $-(r-2),-(r-3),\ldots, r-2, r-1$ are all coefficients of the cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{2n}$. Furthermore, if $1+p_r<p_1+p_2$ then $1-r$ is also a coefficient of $Φ_{2n}$.} In the experimental part, in two instances we present computational evidence for asymptotic symmetry between distribution of positive and negative coefficien…
We present an elementary identity for the cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n(X)$ which reflects a kind of multiplicative property of $Φ_n(X)$ as a function of $n$, and we explore its connections with the properties of other arithmetical functions. Important Note: In the first version of this article uploaded to the arXiv, it is said that this result seemed to be new. However, after that, I have learned that this identity (in Theorem 1.1) has previously appeared in Cheng, C. C. A., McKay, J. H., & Wang, S. S. S. (1995). Resultants of cyclotomic polynomials. Proceedings of the American Mathematical Soc…
Let $Ψ_n(x)$ be the monic polynomial having precisely all non-primitive $n$th roots of unity as its simple zeros. One has $Ψ_n(x)=(x^n-1)/Φ_n(x)$, with $Φ_n(x)$ the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial. The coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$ are integers that like the coefficients of $Φ_n(x)$ tend to be surprisingly small in absolute value, e.g. for $n<561$ all coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$ are $\le 1$ in absolute value. We establish various properties of the coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$.
In this paper, we give an explicit expression for a certain family of ternary cyclotomic polynomials: specifically $Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}p_{3}}$, where $p_{1}<p_{2}<p_{3}$ are odd primes such that $p_{2} \equiv1 \mod p_{1}$ and $p_{3} \equiv1 \mod {p_{1}p_{2}}$. As an application of the explicit expressions, we give an exact formula for the number of nonzero terms in the polynomials in the family, which in turn immediately shows that the density (number of non-zeros terms / degree) is roughly inversely proportional to $p_{2}$, when $p_{1}$ is sufficiently large.
We prove that the Ring Learning With Errors (RLWE) and the Polynomial Learning With Errors (PLWE) problems over the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ are not equivalent. Precisely, we show that reducing one problem to the other increases the noise by a factor that is more than polynomial in $n$. We do so by providing a lower bound, holding for infinitely many positive integers $n$, for the condition number of the Vandermonde matrix of the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial.
Cyclotomic polynomials play fundamental roles in number theory, combinatorics, algebra and their applications. Hence their properties have been extensively investigated. In this paper, we study the maximum gap $g$ (maximum of the differences between any two consecutive exponents). In 2012, it was shown that $g\left( Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}}\right) =p_{1} -1$ for primes $p_{2}>p_{1}$. In 2017, based on numerous calculations, the following generalization was conjectured: $g\left( Φ_{mp}\right) =φ(m)$ for square free odd $m$ and prime $p>m$. The main contribution of this paper is a proof of this conjecture…
We determine necessary conditions for when powers corresponding to positive/negative coefficients of $Φ_{n}$ are in arithmetic progression. When $n = pq$ for any primes $q>p>2$, our conditions are also sufficient. Finally, we generalize the result when $n = pq$ to the so-called inclusion-exclusion polynomials first introduced by Bachman.
