Let U:=L\G be a homogeneous variety defined over a number field K, where G is a connected semisimple K-group and L is a connected maximal semisimple K-subgroup of G with finite index in its normalizer.
Assuming that G(K_v) acts transitively on U(K_v) for almost all places v of K, we obtain the asymptotic of the number of rational points in U(K) with height bounded by T, and settle new cases of Manin's conjecture for many wonderful varieties. The main ingredient of our approach is the equidistribution of semisimple adelic periods, which is established using the theory of unipotent flows.
In this article, we introduce the notion of global adelic space of an arithmetic variety over an adelic curve and prove an equidistribution theorem for a generic sequence of subvarieties. As an application, we prove a Bogomolov type theorem for Abelian varieties over an adelic curve of characteristic 0.
In this article we define and study convex bodies associated to linear series of adelic divisors over quasi-projective varieties that have been introduced recently by Xinyi Yuan and Shou-Wu Zhang. Restricting our attention to big adelic divisors, we deduce properties of volumes obtained by Yuan and Zhang using different convex geometric arguments. We go on to define augmented base loci and restricted volumes of adelic divisors following the works of Michael Nakamaye and develop a similar study using convex bodies to obtain analogous properties for restricted volumes. We closely follow methods …
In the present article, we define a notion of good height functions on quasi-projective varieties $V$ defined over number fields and prove an equidistribution theorem of small points for such height functions. Those good height functions are defined as limits of height functions associated with semi-positive adelic metrization on big and nef $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundles on projective models of $V$ satisfying mild assumptions. Building on a recent work of the author and Vigny as well as on a classical estimate of Call and Silverman, and inspiring from recent works of Kühne and Yuan and Zhang, we d…
We establish asymptotic formulae for volumes of height balls in analytic varieties over local fields and in adelic points of algebraic varieties over number fields, relating the Mellin transforms of height functions to Igusa integrals and to global geometric invariants of the underlying variety. In the adelic setting, this involves the construction of general Tamagawa measures.
In this article, we generalize several fundamental results for arithmetic divisors, such as the continuity of the volume function, the generalized Hodge index theorem, Fujita's approximation theorem for arithmetic divisors and Zariski decompositions for arithmetic divisors on arithmetic surfaces, to the case of the adelic arithmetic divisors.
We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.
We study the proalgebraic space which is the inverse limit of all finite branched covers over a normal toric variety with branching set the invariant divisor under the algebraic torus action. These are completions (compactifications) of the adelic abelian algebraic group which is the profinite completion of the algebraic torus. We prove that the vector bundle category of the proalgebraic toric completion of a toric variety is the direct limit of the respective categories of the finite toric varieties coverings defining the completion. In the case of the complex projective line we obtain as pro…
We prove that the torsion points of an abelian variety are equidistributed over the corresponding berkovich space with respect to the canonical measure.
We prove a Hilbert-Samuel type result of arithmetic big line bundles in Arakelov geometry, which is an analogue of a classical theorem of Siu. An application of this result gives equidistribution of small points over algebraic dynamical systems, following the work of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang. We also generalize Chambert-Loir's non-archimedean equidistribution.
Let F be a global field. In this work, we show that the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points for subvarieties of a torus T over F cuts out exactly the rational points, if either F is a function field or, if F is the field of rational numbers and T is split. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Harari-Voloch over global function fields which states, roughly speaking, that on any rational hyperbolic curve, the local integral points with the Brauer-Manin condition are the global integral points. Finally we prove for tori over number fields a theorem of Stoll on adelic points of zero-dim…
In this paper, we study obstructions to the Dirichlet property by two approaches: density of non-positive points and functionals on adelic R-divisors. Applied to the algebraic dynamical systems, these results provide examples of nef adelic arithmetic R-Cartier divisor which does not have the Dirichlet property. We hope the obstructions obtained in the article will give ways toward criteria of the Dirichlet property.
In this article, we show that for any non-isotrivial family of abelian varieties over a rational base with big monodromy, those members that have adelic Galois representation with image as large as possible form a density-$1$ subset. Our results can be applied to a number of interesting families of abelian varieties, such as rational families dominating the moduli of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves, trigonal curves, or plane curves. As a consequence, we prove that for any dimension $g \geq 3$, there are infinitely many abelian varieties over $\mathbb Q$ with adelic Galois representation havi…
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field k. In this paper, we define the ``global discrepancy'' of a finite set Z of algebraic points on E which in a precise sense measures how far the set is from being adelically equidistributed. We then prove an upper bound for the global discrepancy of Z in terms of the average canonical height of points in Z. We deduce from this inequality a number of consequences. For example, we give a new and simple proof of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang equidistribution theorem for elliptic curves. We also prove a non-archimedean version of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhan…
Consider a system F of n polynomials in n variables, with a total of n+k distinct exponent vectors, over any local field L. We discuss conjecturally tight bounds on the maximal number of non-degenerate roots F can have over L, with all coordinates having fixed phase, as a function of n, k, and L only. In particular, we give new explicit systems with number of roots approaching the best known upper bounds. We also briefly review the background behind such bounds, and their application, including connections to computational number theory and variants of the Shub-Smale tau-Conjecture and the P v…
We prove the Bogomolov conjecture for an abelian variety A over a function field which is totally degenerate at a place v. We adapt Zhang's proof of the number field case replacing the complex analytic tools by tropical analytic geometry. A key step is the tropical equidistribution theorem for A at the totally degenerate place. As an application, we obtain finiteness of torsion points with coordinates in the maximal unramified algebraic extension over v.
We study the non-archimedean counterpart to the complex amoeba of an algebraic variety, and show that it coincides with a polyhedral set defined by Bieri and Groves using valuations. For hypersurfaces this set is also the tropical variety of the defining polynomial. Using non-archimedean analysis and a recent result of Conrad we prove that the amoeba of an irreducible variety is connected. We introduce the notion of an adelic amoeba for varieties over global fields, and establish a form of the local-global principle for them. This principle is used to explain the calculation of the nonexpansiv…
For a homogeneous space X (not necessarily principal) of a connected algebraic group G (not necessarily linear) over a number field k, we prove a theorem of strong approximation for the adelic points of X in the Brauer-Manin set. Namely, for an adelic point x of X orthogonal to a certain subgroup (which may contain transcendental elements) of the Brauer group Br(X) of X with respect to the Manin pairing, we prove a strong approximation property for x away from a finite set S of places of k. Our result extends a result of Harari for torsors of semiabelian varieties and a result of Colliot-Thélè…
In this survey article we discuss the question: to what extent is an algebraic variety determined by its ring of differential operators? In the case of affine curves, this question leads to a variety of mathematical notions such as the Weyl algebra, Calogero-Moser spaces and the adelic Grassmannian. We give a fairly detailed overview of this material.
For a closed d-dimensional subvariety X of an abelian variety A and a canonically metrized line bundle L on A, Chambert-Loir has introduced measures $c_1(L|_X)^{\wedge d}$ on the Berkovich analytic space associated to A with respect to the discrete valuation of the ground field. In this paper, we give an explicit description of these canonical measures in terms of convex geometry. We use a generalization of the tropicalization related to the Raynaud extension of A and Mumford's construction. The results have applications to the equidistribution of small points.
In this article, we show that in each of four standard families of hyperelliptic curves, there is a density-$1$ subset of members with the property that their Jacobians have adelic Galois representation with image as large as possible. This result constitutes an explicit application of a general theorem on arbitrary rational families of abelian varieties to the case of families of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. Furthermore, we provide explicit examples of hyperelliptic curves of genus $2$ and $3$ over $\mathbb Q$ whose Jacobians have such maximal adelic Galois representations.
We show that the height of a toric variety with respect to a toric metrized line bundle can be expressed as the integral over a polytope of a certain adelic family of concave functions. To state and prove this result, we study the Arakelov geometry of toric varieties. In particular, we consider models over a discrete valuation ring, metrized line bundles, and their associated measures and heights. We show that these notions can be translated in terms of convex analysis, and are closely related to objects like polyhedral complexes, concave functions, real Monge-Ampère measures, and Legendre-Fen…
We formulate a conjecture for semiabelian varieties A over number fields that includes both the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture. We prove the "Mordellic" (finitely generated) part of the conjecture when A is isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus. The proof makes use of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and an equidistribution theorem.
Let ${\cal L} = (L, \| \cdot \|_v)$ be an ample metrized invertible sheaf on a smooth quasi-projective algebraic variety $V$ defined over a number field. Denote by $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ the number of rational points in $V$ having ${\cal L}$-height $\leq B$. We consider the problem of a geometric and arithmetic interpretation of the asymptotic for $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ as $B \to \infty$ in connection with recent conjectures of Fujita concerning the Minimal Model Program for polarized algebraic varieties. We introduce the notions of ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties and ${\cal L}$-primitive fibrations. For…
We address the distribution properties of points of small height on proper toric varieties and applications to the related Bogomolov property. We introduce the notion of monocritical toric metrized divisor and we prove that equidistribution occurs for every generic, small sequence with respect to a toric metrized divisor, for every place if and only if the divisor is monocritical. Furthermore, when this is the case, the limit measure is a translate of the natural measure on the compact torus sitting in the principal orbit of the ambient toric variety. We also study the $v$-adic modulus distrib…
We consider smooth projective curves C/$\mathbb{F}$ over a finite field and their symmetric squares $C^{(2)}$. For a global function field $K/\mathbb{F}$, we study the $K$-rational points of $C^{(2)}$. We describe the adelic points of $C^{(2)}$ surviving Frobenius descent and how the $K$-rational points fit there. Our methods also lead to an explicit bound on the number of $K$-rational points of $C^{(2)}$ satisfying an additional condition. Some of our results apply to arbitrary constant subvarieties of abelian varieties, however we produce examples which show that not all of our stronger conc…
The Bogomolov conjecture claims that a closed subvariety containing a dense subset of small points is a special kind of subvarieties. In the arithmetic setting over number fields, the Bogomolov conjecture for abelian varieties has already been established as a theorem of Ullmo and Zhang, but in the geometric setting over function field, it has not yet been solved completely. There are only some partial results known such as the totally degenerate case due to Gubler and our recent work generalizing Gubler's result. The key in establishing the previous results on the Bogomolov conjecture is the …
We study a natural question in the Iwasawa theory of algebraic curves of genus $>1$. Fix a prime number $p$. Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically irreducible curve defined over a number field $K$ of genus $g>1$, such that the Jacobian of $X$ has good ordinary reduction at the primes above $p$. Fix an odd prime $p$ and for any integer $n>1$, let $K_n^{(p)}$ denote the degree-$p^n$ extension of $K$ contained in $K(μ_{p^{\infty}})$. We prove explicit results for the growth of $\#X(K_n^{(p)})$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. When the Jacobian of $X$ has rank zero and the associated adelic Galo…
