In this survey article we discuss the question: to what extent is an algebraic variety determined by its ring of differential operators? In the case of affine curves, this question leads to a variety of mathematical notions such as the Weyl algebra, Calogero-Moser spaces and the adelic Grassmannian. We give a fairly detailed overview of this material.
We give a complete classification of anisotropic projective homogeneous varieties of dimension less than 6 up to motivic isomorphism. We give several criteria for anisotropic flag varieties of type A_n to have isomorphic motives.
We study derived equivalences of Abelian varieties in terms of their associated symplectic data. For simple Abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero we prove that the natural correspondence introduced by Orlov, which maps equivalences to symplectic isomorphisms, is surjective.
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.
We show that if a rational map is constant on each isomorphism class of unpolarized abelian varieties of a given dimension, then it is a constant map. Our results are motivated by and shed light on a proposed construction of a cryptographic protocol for multiparty non-interactive key exchange.
In this paper, we report several large classes of affine varieties (over an arbitrary field $K$ of characteristic 0) with the following property: each variety in these classes has an isomorphic copy such that the corresponding isomorphism cannot be extended to an automorphism of the ambient affine space $K^n$. This implies, in particular, that each of these varieties has at least two inequivalent embeddings in $K^n$. The following application of our results seems interesting: we show that lines in $K^2$ are distinguished among irreducible algebraic retracts by the property of having a unique e…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the birational geometry of Generalized Severi-Brauer varieties. A conjecture of Amitsur states that two Severi-Brauer varieties $V(A)$ and $V(B)$ are birational if the underlying central simple algebras $A$ and $B$ are the same degree and generate the same cyclic subgroup of the Brauer group. We present a generalization of this conjecture to Generalized Severi-Brauer varieties, and show that in most cases we may reduce the new conjecture to the case where every subfield of the algebras is maximal, and in particular to the case where the algebras have pri…
Two quasi-projective varieties are called piecewise isomorphic if they can be stratified into pairwise isomorphic strata. We show that the m-th symmetric power $S^m(C^n)$ of the complex affine space $C^n$ is piecewise isomorphic to $C^{mn}$ and the m-th symmetric power $S^m(CP^\infty)$ of the infinite dimensional complex projective space is piecewise isomorphic to the infinite dimensional Grassmannian $Gr(m,\infty)$.
In a previous paper we showed that for every polarization on an abelian variety there is a dual polarization on the dual abelian variety. In this note we extend this notion of duality to families of polarized abelian varieties. As a main consequence we obtain an involution on the set of moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$. In particular, the moduli spaces $\mathcal A_{(d_1,...,d_g)}$ and $\mathcal A_{(d_1,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_{g-1}},...,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_2},d_g)}$ are canonically isomorphic.
How does the first order language of fields encode birational invariants of varieties?... This question is related to rational points on varieties and effectiveness in algebraic/arithmetic geometry.
We study the local factor at p of the semi-simple zeta function of a Shimura variety of Drinfeld type for a level structure given at p by the pro-unipotent radical of an Iwahori subgroup. Our method is an adaptation to this case of the Langlands-Kottwitz counting method. We use Hecke algebra isomorphisms to determine the test functions at p.
Let $X$ be a quasi-affine algebraic variety isomorphic to the complement of a closed subvariety of dimension at most $n-3$ in $\C^n$. We find some conditions under which an isomorphism of two closed subvarieties of $X$ can be extended to an automorphism of $X$.
In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.
The category of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is shown to be anti-equivalent to a category of $\mathbb{Z}$-lattices that are modules for a non-commutative pro-ring of endomorphisms of a suitably chosen direct system of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$. On full subcategories cut out by a finite set $w$ of conjugacy classes of Weil $q$-numbers, the anti-equivalence is represented by what we call $w$-locally projective abelian varieties.
In this paper we construct a tilting sheaf for Severi-Brauer Varieties and Involution Varieties. This sheaf relates the derived category of each variety to the derived category of modules over a ring whose semisimple component consists of the Tits algebras of the corresponding linear algebraic group.
In [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmaros, "On quasi-Hermitian varieties", J. Comb. Des. 20 (2012), 433-447] new quasi-Hermitian varieties ${\mathcal M}_{α,β}$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r,q^2)$ depending on a pair of parameters $α,β$ from the underlying field $\mathrm{GF}(q^2)$ have been constructed. In the present paper we determine the projective equivalence classes of such varieties for $r=3$ and $q$ odd.
Let $X \to S$ be a miniversal family of smooth and projective varieties and D be a fixed triangulated category. We show that the set of points s in S such that the derived category of the fiber X_s at s is equivalent to D is at most countable. We deduce from this that the derived equivalence classes of smooth and projective complex varieties is at most countable.
We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.
We associate a complete non-singular fan with a polygon triangulation. Such a fan appears from a certain toric Richardson variety, called of Catalan type introduced in this paper. A toric Richardson variety of Catalan type is a Fano Bott manifold. We show that toric Richardson varieties of Catalan type are classified up to isomorphism in terms of unordered binary trees. In particular, the number of isomorphism classes of $n$-dimensional toric Richardson varieties of Catalan type is the $(n+1)$th Wedderburn--Etherington number.
In the thesis we present a new method for parametrizing algebraic varieties over the field of characteristic zero. The problem of parametrizing is reduced to a problem of finding an isomorphism of algebras. We introduce the Lie algebra of a variety as a Lie algebra related to its group of automorphisms. Constructing an isomorphism of this one and some classical Lie algebra (for example the algebra of matrices of the zero trace) then leads to parametrizing the variety. The problem of finding an isomorphism of Lie algebras is further reduced to trivializing an associative algebra, which means fi…
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
We formulate two conjectures about etale cohomology and fundamental groups motivated by categoricity conjectures in model theory. One conjecture says that there is a unique Z-form of the etale cohomology of complex algebraic varieties, up to Aut(C)-action on the source category; put differently, each comparison isomorphism between Betti and etale cohomology comes from a choice of a topology on C. Another conjecture says that each functor to groupoids from the category of complex algebraic varieties which is similar to the topological fundamental groupoid functor, in fact factors through it, up…
We construct a concrete isomorphism from the permutohedral variety to the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety associated to the Hessenberg function $h_+(i)=i+1$, $1\le i\le n-1$. In the process of defining the isomorphism, we introduce a sequence of varieties which we call the prepermutohedral varieties. We first determine the toric structure of these varieties and compute the Euler characteristics and the Betti numbers using the theory of toric varieties. Then, we describe the cohomology of these varieties. We also find a natural way to encode the one-dimensional components of the cohomolog…
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
This paper is devoted to the investigation of selected situations when the computation of projective (and other) equivalences of algebraic varieties can be efficiently solved with the help of finding projective equivalences of finite sets on the projective line. In particular, we design a unifying approach that finds for two algebraic varieties $X,Y$ from special classes an associated set of automorphisms of the projective line (the so called good candidate set) consisting of candidates for the construction of possible mappings $X\rightarrow Y$. The functionality of the designed method is pres…
We study twisted derived equivalences for schemes in the setting of spectral algebraic geometry. To this end, we introduce the notion of a twisted equivalence and show that a twisted equivalence for perfect spectral algebraic stacks admitting a quasi-finite presentation supplies an equivalence between the stacks, which compensate for the failure of twisted derived equivalences for non-affine schemes to provide an isomorphism of the schemes. In the case of (not necessarily connective) commutative ring spectra, we also prove a spectral analogue of Rickard's theorem, which shows that a derived eq…
We formulate the equivalence problem, in the sense of E. Cartan, for families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. An important invariant of this equivalence problem is the variety of minimal rational tangents. We study the case when varieties of minimal rational tangents at general points form an isotrivial family. The main question in this case is for which projective variety $Z$, a family of minimal rational curves with $Z$-isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents is locally equivalent to the flat model. We show that this is the case when $Z$ satisfies certa…
In this paper, we discuss the problem of whether the difference $[X]-[Y]$ of the classes of a Fourier--Mukai pair $(X, Y)$ of smooth projective varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by some power of the class $\mathbb{L} = [ \mathbb{A}^1 ]$ of the affine line. We give an affirmative answer for Fourier--Mukai pairs of very general K3 surfaces of degree 12. On the other hand, we prove that in each dimension greater than one, there exists an abelian variety such that the difference with its dual is not annihilated by any power of $\mathbb{L}$, thereby giving a negative an…
Batyrev (et. al.) constructed a family of Calabi-Yau varieties using small toric degenerations of the full flag variety G/B. They conjecture this family to be mirror to generic anti-canonical hypersurfaces in G/B. Recently Alexeev and Brion, as a part of their work on toric degenerations of spherical varieties, have constructed many degenerations of G/B. For any such degeneration we construct a family of varieties, which we prove coincides with Batyrev's in the small case. We prove that any two such families are birational, thus proving that mirror families are independent of the choice of deg…
Let X be a flexible variety of F be an isomorphism of closed one-dimensional subschemes of $X$. We develop criteria which guarantee that F extends to au automorphism of X.
In previous work a relation between a large class of Kac-Moody algebras and meromorphic connections on global curves was established---notably the Weyl group gives isomorphisms between different moduli spaces of connections, and the root system is also seen to play a role. This involved a modular interpretation of many Nakajima quiver varieties, as moduli spaces of connections, whenever the underlying graph was a complete k-partite graph (or more generally a supernova graph). However in the isomonodromy story, or wild nonabelian Hodge theory, slightly larger moduli spaces of connections are co…
For any $n\geq 3$, we prove that there exist equivalences between these apparently unrelated objects: irreducible $n$-dimensional non degenerate projective varieties $X\subset \mathbb P^{2n+1}$ different from rational normal scrolls and 3-covered by twisted cubic curves, up to projective equivalence; quadro-quadric Cremona transformations of $ \mathbb P^{n-1}$, up to linear equivalence; $n$-dimensional complex Jordan algebras of rank three, up to isotopy. We also provide some applications to the classification of particular classes of varieties in the class defined above and of quadro-quadric …
In this paper we study the group $A_0(X)$ of zero dimensional cycles of degree 0 modulo rational equivalence on a projective homogeneous algebraic variety $X$. To do this we translate rational equivalence of 0-cycles on a projective variety into R-equivalence on symmetric powers of the variety. For certain homogeneous varieties, we then relate these symmetric powers to moduli spaces of étale subalgebras of central simple algebras which we construct. This allows us to show $A_0(X) = 0$ for certain classes of homogeneous varieties, extending previous results of Swan / Karpenko, of Merkurjev, and…
We discuss a conjecture saying that derived equivalence of simply connected smooth projective varieties implies that the difference of their classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by a power of the affine line class. We support the conjecture with a number of known examples, and one new example. We consider a smooth complete intersection $X$ of three quadrics in ${\mathbf P}^5$ and the corresponding double cover $Y \to {\mathbf P}^2$ branched over a sextic curve. We show that as soon as the natural Brauer class on $Y$ vanishes, so that $X$ and $Y$ are derived equivalent, …
In this article we study the equivariant elliptic cohomology of complex toric varieties. We prove a partial reconstruction theorem showing that equivariant elliptic cohomology encodes considerable non-trivial information on the equivariant 1-skeleton of a toric variety X (although it stops short of being a complete invariant of its GKM graphs). Elliptic cohomology is supposed to encode higher categorical geometric data, and proposals have been made linking elliptic cocycles to categorified bundles. In particular, contrary to ordinary cohomology and K-theory, elliptic cohomology is expected not…
Schubert varieties have been exhaustively studied with a plethora of techniques: Coxeter groups, explicit desingularization, Frobenius splitting, etc. Many authors have applied these techniques to various other varieties, usually defined by determinantal equations. It has turned out that most of these apparently different varieties are actually Schubert varieties in disguise, so that one may use a single unified theory to understand many large families of spaces. The most powerful result in this direction was given by Lusztig as a footnote to his work on canonical bases. He showed that the var…
K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence. We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. Th…
