We use an accurate implementation of density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the zero-temperature generalized phase diagram of the 4$d$ series of transition metals from Y to Pd as a function of pressure $P$ and atomic number $Z$. The implementation used is full-potential linearized augmented plane waves (FP-LAPW), and we employ the exchange-correlation functional recently developed by Wu and Cohen. For each element, we obtain the ground-state energy for several crystal structures over a range of volumes, the energy being converged with respect to all technical parameters to within $\sim 1$ meV/atom. The calculated transition pressures for all the elements and all transitions we have found are compared with experiment wherever possible, and we discuss the origin of the significant discrepancies. Agreement with experiment for the zero-temperature equation of state is generally excellent. The generalized phase diagram of the 4$d$ series shows that the major boundaries slope towards lower $Z$ with increasing $P$ for the early elements, as expected from the pressure induced transfer of electrons from $sp$ states to $d$ states, but are almost independent of $P$ for the later elements. Our results for Mo indicate a transition from bcc to fcc, rather than the bcc-hcp transition expected from $sp$-$d$ transfer.
We present a high-pressure investigation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition in MoS2 and WS2 carried out by synchrotron-based far-infrared spectroscopy, to reconcile the controversial estimates of the metallization pressure found in the literature and gain new insight into the mechanisms ruling this electronic transition. Two spectral descriptors are found indicative of the onset of metallicity and of the origin of the free carriers in the metallic state: the absorbance spectral weight, whose abrupt increase defines the metallization pressure threshold, and the asymmetric lineshape of the…
It was predicted that solid metallic hydrogen can be obtained if solid molecular hydrogen is pressured to high pressure at low temperature about 80 years ago. Furthermore, the solid metallic hydrogen was theoretically predicted to show superconductivity at room temperature. In addition, surprising prediction was made that the solid metallic hydrogen is a metastable metal with a potential barrier of 1 eV. This prediction implies that the solid metallic hydrogen remains in the metallic solid phase state even after it is released from high pressure. Shock compression synthesized liquid metallic h…
We have performed first principles study for bismuth crystal structure at pressure from 0~14 GPa based on structure search and quasi-harmonic approximation. A new stable phase with Pbcm symmetry is predicted by structure search method. We find that the most stable structures of bismuth at 0 K are R-3m(0 ~ 3.29 GPa), Pbcm (3.29 GPa ~ 4.91 GPa), Cmce (4.91 GPa ~ 10.57 GPa) and Im-3m ( > 10.57 GPa), respectively. By quasi-harmonic approximation, we predicted the phase diagram of bismuth from first principles calculations. We found that the phase transition pressure reduces with increasing tempera…
Understanding the high-pressure behavior of C-H system is of great importance due to its key role in organic, bio-, petroleum and planetary chemistry. We have performed a systematic investigation of the pressure-composition phase diagram of the C-H system at pressures up to 400 GPa using evolutionary structure prediction coupled with ab initio calculations and discovered that only saturated hydrocarbons are thermodynamically stable. Several stable methane-hydrogen co crystals are predicted: 2CH4 * H2, earlier obtained experimentally, is predicted to have I4/m space group and 2-90 GPa stability…
Lithium (Li) metal anodes are essential for developing next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, Li dendrite/whisker formation caused short-circuiting issue and short cycle life have prevented lithium metal from being viably used in rechargeable batteries. Numerous works have been done to study how to regulate the Li growth in electrochemical cycling by using external stacking forces. While it is widely agreed that stack pressure positively affects the lithium plating/stripping process, the optimized pressure range provided by different works varies greatly because of the differe…
We consider angular diagrams describing the dependence of the magnetic conductivity of metals on the direction of the magnetic field in rather strong fields. As it can be shown, all angular conductivity diagrams can be divided into a finite number of classes with different complexity. The greatest interest among such diagrams is represented by diagrams with the maximal complexity, which can occur for metals with rather complicated Fermi surfaces. In describing the structure of complex diagrams, in addition to the description of the conductivity itself, the description of the Hall conductivity …

Silicon telluride (Si2Te3) is a two-dimensional semiconductor with unique structural properties due to the size contrast between Si and Te atoms. A recent experiment shows that the material turns metallic under hydrostatic pressure, while the lattice structure of the metallic phase remains to be identified. In this paper, we propose two metallic phases, M1 and M2, of Si2Te3 using the evolution algorithm and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Unlike the presence of Si-Si dimers in the semiconducting (SC) phase, both M1 and M2 phases have individual Si atoms, which pl…
Molecular hydrogen was pressurized in a diamond anvil cell at temperatures between 5 and 83 K. At a sufficiently high pressure, estimated to be between 477 to 491 GPa, hydrogen became metallic, determined by its reflectance in the near infrared and fit to a Drude free-electron model. We then studied the predicted metastability of metallic hydrogen. At a temperature of 5 K the load on the metallic hydrogen was stepwise reduced until the pressure was zero. While turning the load or pressure down, the sample evidently transformed to the molecular phase and escaped; the sample hole closed. We esti…
High-pressure metal-hydride (MH) research evolved into a thriving field within condensed matter physics following the realisation of metallic compounds showing phonon mediated near room-temperature superconductivity. However, severe limitations in determining the chemical formula of the reaction products, especially with regards to their hydrogen content, impedes a deep understanding of the synthesized phases and can lead to significantly erroneous conclusions. Here, we present a way to directly access the hydrogen content of MH solids synthesised at high pressures in (laser-heated) diamond an…
The effect of pressure ($P$) on magnetic susceptibility of CsCuCl$_3$ was examined in magnetic fields ($\rm μ_0$$H$) of up to 51 T using a proximity detector oscillator (PDO), and the $H$-$P$ phase diagram of CsCuCl$_3$ was constructed over the saturation field ($H_{\rm sat}$). We found that, with increasing $P$, $H_{\rm sat}$ increases and the uud-phase that appeared at $P$ = 0.7 GPa widened. Based on comparison between the experimental and calculated $H$-$P$ phase diagrams, the Y-phase was predicted to appear above 1.7 GPa. The interchain antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the $ab$-pl…
In this paper, we did a systematic comparative study on the accuracy of two computational methods of elastic constants combined with the density functional theory (DFT), the stress-strain method and the energy-strain method. We took metal Ru as a prototype to compare its high-pressure elastic constants calculated by our present stress-strain method with the previous energy-strain results by others. Although the two methods yielded almost the same accuracy of high-pressure elastic constants for Ru, our stress-strain method directly based on the Hooke's law of elasticity theory is much straightf…
Electrical resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under high pressure were carried out in high-quality single crystals of $α$-Mn. The pressure-temperature phase diagram consists of an antiferromagnetic ordered phase (0<$P$<1.4 GPa, $T<T_{\rm N}$), a pressure-induced ordered phase (1.4<$P$<4.2-4.4 GPa, $T<T_{\rm A}$), and a paramagnetic phase. A significant increase was observed in the temperature dependence of ac-susceptibility at $T_{\rm A}$, indicating that the pressure-induced ordered phase has a spontaneous magnetic moment. Ferrimagnetic order and parasitic ferromagnetism are propo…
High pressure is a proven effective tool for modulating inter-layer interactions in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, which leads to significant band structure changes. Here, we present an extended infrared study of the pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal transition in 2H-MoTe2, which reveals that the metallization process at 13-15 GPa is not associated with the indirect band gap closure, occuring at 24 GPa. A coherent picture is drawn where n-type doping levels just below the conduction band minimum play a crucial role in the early metallization transition. Doping levels ar…
Motivated by the recent discovery of near-room temperature superconductivity in high-pressure superhydrides, we investigate from first-principles the high-pressure superconducting phase diagram of the ternary Ca-B-H system, using ab-initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and Density Functional Perturbation Theory. We find that below 100 GPa all stable and weakly metastable phases are insulating. This pressure marks the appearance of several new chemically-forbidden phases on the hull of stability, and the first onset of metalization in CaBH$_5$. Metallization is then gradually achie…
Single crystalline samples of the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS4 were studied by measurements of specific heat and comprehensive anisotropic temperature- and magnetic field-dependent magnetization. In addition, measurements of the heat capacity and magnetization were performed under pressures of up to ~21 kbar and ~14 kbar respectively. At ambient pressure, two magnetic transitions are observed, second order from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at TN ~ 37 K, and a first-order spin reorientation transition at T* ~ 34 K. Anisotropic H - T phase diagrams were constructed using t…
The phase diagram of oxygen is investigated for pressures from 50 to 130~GPa and temperatures up 1200 K using first principles theory. A metallic molecular structure with the $P6_3/mmc$ symmetry ($η^{'}$ phase) is determined to be thermodynamically stable in this pressure range at elevated temperatures above the $ε$(${O_8}$) phase. Long-standing disagreements between theory and experiment for the stability of $ε$(${O_8}$), its metallic character, and the transition pressure to the $ζ$ oxygen phase are resolved. Crucial for obtaining these results are the inclusion of anharmonic lattice dynamic…
